Campbell River Hospital was filled to overflowing this week and concern is mounting that the new hospital is not going to solve the acute crowding problem.

The Mirror received an alert Thursday from a prominent local doctor that “the hospital was on diversion (Wednesday) as there were no beds and it was overflowing in fact.”

The physician added: “The number of people admitted now is roughly the number of beds Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) is planning in the new hospital that we hope will last us for many years. Good planning?”

Swanston’s son Terry took his own life Aug. 21, 2010 with a single bullet to his head at the age of 29, just one week before his 30th birthday. Terry was living with his wife, whom he

married in 2004, in Philadelphia and had been struggling with an undiagnosed mental illness for several years.

“Sadly we think he was bipolar. We don’t know for sure because he was never diagnosed,” Swanston says. “You

Ambulance service confirms Quadra birthing issue BRIAN KIERAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) has confir med that it “flagged” a difficult home birth on Quadra Island during which a local woman was doing the work of a midwife.

Last week, the Mirror revealed that the BC College of Midwives is conducting an investigation into a Quadra woman, Moreka Jolar, who has alle gedly

been illegally doing the work of a midwife while claiming to be “a traditional birth attendant.”

BCAS spokesperson Kelsie Carwithen says: “We can confirm that a patient safety concern was recently flagged for the College of Midwives. BCAS has an internal patient safety reporting procedure in place for paramedics to report these concerns. Incidents of concern are reported

to a supervisor and the Patient Care Quality Office for follow up.

“This case was reported due to the perceived patient safety issues surrounding the scope of care provided under the jurisdiction of the College.”

Colle ge Re gistrar Jane Kilthei says Jolar has been on the College’s radar since 1998 and became an issue again this summer for her role in the August birth of Morgan Stew-

art-Webb. Responding to a 911 call Aug. 15 paramedics went to the Quadra home of Noah Webb, 25, a volunteer fire fighter, and Amanda Stewart, 28, who had gone into labour early and had given birth in the couple’s backyard wading pool. The paramedics were troubled by what they encountered.

The College alleges Jolar “provided midwifery care to a woman and her newborn in

Quathiaski Cove on Quadra Island including managing this woman’s labour and delivery on her own responsibility.”

The Colle ge also alleges that Jolar represented herself as qualified to act as primary care provider at this woman’s birth.

“She is an illegal practitioner and we have grave concerns about her continuing to practise and put mothers and babies at risk.”

The Health Professions Act defines restricted activities and amongst them are managing labour and delivering a newborn. Only physicians, nurses in hospitals and registered widwives are permitted to perform these procedures. The College claims that Jolar is leaving herself open to a $2,000 fine and/or six months in jail. The College wants Jolar to confirm in writing by

Nov. 19 that she is “not practicing midwifery” and has ceased to offer her services “to attend births in the role of primary care provider for a fee or otherwise in B.C.” Under Section 52 of the Health Professions Act the College has the authority to commence a prosecution and to seek an injunction to restrain Jolar’s activities. The Mirror could not reach Jolar for comment.

Carol Chapman doesn’t want to see any of the Movember moustaches around town unkempt.

That’s because Chapman’s A Cut Above salon, dubbed the “official moustache trimmers” is offering free grooming to all men who have grown a ‘stache for Movember – a movement to support prostate cancer awareness and research.

“We have all these guys running around

town with moustaches, we want them to look nice, right,” Chapman said.

Mo for the Bros gala at Moxie’s from 6-10 p.m. to raise money for prostate cancer research through a silent auction. Chapman will be on hand with her barber chair to shave off all the moustaches.

Moevember begins each year on Nov. 1 and throughout the month, normally clean-shaven men are encouraged to grow a moustache and raise funds for cancer research through sponsors. The campaign is also aimed at raising awareness and encouraging men to undergo

routine prostate exams to ensure early detection. Maier got on board locally with Movember because of his father.

“My dad went through prostate cancer four years ago,” Maier said. “He survived because he got checked.”

Maier said both men and women are invited to the Nov. 29 gala and he’s encouraging everyone who can to donate to the silent auction.

cerned I think we’re just scared of it,” she says. “People don’t go for help because of the stigma. The only way we can dissolve a stigma is by talking about it. We must replace the stigma with compassion and understanding.”

That’s why, as the second anniversary of Terry’s death approached, Swanston made the brave and agonizing decision to write down her feelings about losing her son in an open letter in which she describes her road to recovery and explains the seriousness of suicide and mental illness.

“We now know that Terry had been depressed for some time,” she writes in her letter. “Like many others he was a mas-

ter at concealing it and we had no idea, although in retrospect there were signals.

Eventually he entered his own suicidal coma where he felt the only (way) out of his pain was to take his life. I believe he did not feel worthy of help and that breaks my heart even more.”

The letter, which Swanston sent via e-mail to everyone in her address book (roughly 50 or 60 people) made its way to Swanston’s niece in Ireland. Her niece forwarded the letter to the director of a large counselling firm in Northern Ireland who asked Swanston if she would be interested in giving a 15-minute keynote address at an upcoming Suicide Prevention - What Works

conference Nov. 22 in Belfast. Swanston jumped at the chance.

The message she wants to get across is it’s okay to talk about suicide and no one is immune to mental illness.

“We need to understand the difference between mental health and mental illness,” Swanston says. “We all have mental health – it is our emotional, cognitive and psychological state of wellbeing. If you have a brain you have mental health. Mental illness is a medical condition that affects our brain and disrupts our mental health, our emotional, cognitive and psychological state of well-being. One in five people will experience a mental illness in any given year. We

need to talk about the reality and impact of mental illness. That it is sometimes fatal and the fatality is by suicide.”

Swanston says our culture is not taught to deal well with death. She says since her son’s death life has been “unfathomable” and it’s been a long road to get to where she is today.

“Grief is hard work, it takes a long time,” she says. “Our culture is not very good with loss. The silence is deafening. People are afraid to talk about it because they don’t want to upset you. I understand that they don’t want to remind you but you don’t forget. You never forget losing a child.”

Swanston says people were afraid to approach her and her husband Michael and talk about what happened. But her letter helped people realize she wants to talk about Terry.

“If you know someone who’s lost a child to suicide, they need to talk about it. And if they get upset, you didn’t upset them. You gave them the gift of remembering,” Swanston says.

Swanston says often it feels as if Terry’s disappearing because people are afraid to talk about him.

“He lived. I don’t want him to disappear,” she says.

Swanston hopes by talking about mental illness and suicide she can help others who may be contemplating taking their own life.

“People are afraid if we talk about it, it makes it happen more often and that’s not true,” she says.

Swanston and her husband hope to help others.

“If we can help one person to reach out to help someone contemplating suicide then that helps us makes some sense of our son’s suicide,” Swanston says.

Over the past three months Campbell Riverites have been chomping at the bit to offer their homes to construction workers expected to descend on the city once work on the John Hart Generating Station gets underway.

“Today’s hearing aids digitally produce clearer sound in a sleeker package than ever before,” says Martin Jurek, who owns Campbell River Hearing Clinic with his wife Jana. “They’re advanced computers that analyze and modify sound to provide the cleanest signal for people with hearing loss. And they look a lot better, too – no more of those bulky, beige behemoths your dad wore.“ The Jureks, both Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioners, have been in the hearing business for 15 years. Little of what they do is dictated by convention (just ask Martin about how they met, which he

describes as a “glorified mail-order bride”) and so it’s no surprise that their focus is on providing information rather than selling hearing aids.

“We’re really interested in education,” explains Jana. “We know it can be difficult to recognize hearing loss and then do something about it, and the process is full of questions that need honest answers. If we can make that process easier and more comfortable, without hassles or pressure, then we’re happy. We want to make the entire experience a positive experience.”

“A lot of the challenges today have to do with people putting off treatment of their hearing loss until it’s affected their communication skills, social lives and relationships,” adds Martin. That’s where our follow-up support and communication therapy comes in.”

“Expecting to throw in a hearing aid and suddenly hear perfectly is like having your hip replaced and expecting to dance out of the operating room,” says Martin. “That’s why so many people end up with hearing aids in their drawer instead of in their ears; no one’s helped them take that crucial next step.”

City council has already discussed how it can help when it comes to accommo-

dations.

Mayor Walter Jakeway said at a council meeting Aug. 14 that he would like to see workers put up in local homes.

“There’s going to be lots of people coming here,” he said.

“A great way to spread some income around town (would be) to get staff to look at accommodation in suites in homes.”

In October, the city’s senior planner also

recommended council take a look at secondary suites.

“Secondary suites are a viable approach to diversifying rental stock, providing increased affordable housing options and providing a mortgage helper for homeowners,” he said.

There are currently at least 600 secondary suites in the city, but it’s not known how many of those are legal.

One of Campbell River’s longest-standing Christmas traditions is back for its 30th year this December.

The annual Christmas Light Tour, which takes people of all ages by the biggest and brightest displays in town via the city bus, takes place this year on Sunday, Dec. 9.

The tour, which is co-ordinated by the Willow Point Lions in partnership with Campbell River Transit, is always in high demand and Tom McKenzie of the Lions Club said he’s already had people calling to ask about the tour.

The event has come a long way since its beginnings in 1982, when it was started by the local transit manager John Leavitt. Leavitt had arrived in Campbell River from the Lower Mainland, where the public transportation system partnered with BC Ferries to do its own Christmas light tour

In the beginning the tour was exclusive to people with disabilities and seniors but it evolved and eventually grew to include the entire community.

It started with transit’s three or four public buses and a couple of school buses. To put that into perspective, last year BC Transit was forced to use all seven of its local buses to serve the 350 people who attended the tour.

Hospital will replace the existing acute care facility which was built in 1956. Construction is expected to begin in 2013 and be completed in 2017.

The critical issue of overcrowding was aired at the Nov. 8 meeting of the Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital Board. Citizens for Quality Health Care member Lois Jarvis, one of six stakeholders to attend, says: “We were told that there are up to 98 patients daily in the hospital.

“Director Brenda Leigh brought up the concern over the new hospital having only 95 beds. VIHA CEO Howard Waldner said that 40 alternate level care (ALC) beds promised to Campbell River will be built prior to the new hospital being opened and that will alleviate the pressure on the acute care beds. He said that six of those 40 beds have already been allocated in the community.”

Jarvis says the notion that 40 new ALC beds somewhere else in the community will solve all the problems is hard to believe. “Forty beds are not going to be near enough.” She says Waldner also told the meeting that 15 to 20 per cent of the patients in the existing hospital don’t belong there and VIHA “is looking at the situation.”

“The situation with seniors taking up acute care beds is beyond critical. It is putting a terrible strain on the hospital,” Jarvis says. “There is a lot of concern that the hospital is strained to the breaking point and that a new hospital is not going to solve the problem.”

Calls to VIHA and to Campbell River Hospital Site Director Lois Tirebuck were not answered.

It was only $7,000 worth of library shelving, but the speakers of the Kwak’wala/ Liqwala language see it as a platform to ensure their voice lives on for generations.

Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan, the MP for Vancouver Island North, visited the Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre on Quadra Island Saturday to announce $7,000 in funding from the Western Economic Diversification Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund to help the Centre install new library shelving.

The Centre currently has a collection of First Nations books that are in storage and inaccessible. With the funding, the Nuyumbalees Society will be able to

construct shelving at the centre that can display this collection and make it accessible to members of the community and the public.

Minister Duncan said: “I have had many conversations about Nuyumbalees and about retaining the language and retaining the culture. As a backdrop to today’s announcement we have found two years of funding for language preservation which will lead to language education. It is vital that this occur at this time because the dialect is still alive but there are precious few people who are able to speak it.

“We know that as long as you can document (the language) and get it preserved then you can turn it into a teaching tool.”

The money is part of $20.4-million for railway upgrades that would allow a daily passenger service to run between Courtenay and Victoria.

The RDN is one of five regional districts along the railway corridor (which does not include the Strathcona Regional District) asked to pony up so work can get started on the upgrades.

Three have already approved their portion of the contribution.

On top of regional district contributions, the provincial and federal governments have kicked in $15 million collectively, the rail operator is paying $500,000

and the foundation would pursue financing from lenders for the remaining $2.2 million.

The Island Corridor Foundation is asking taxpayers to invest in passenger rail, but the question remains whether the Island has enough people willing to use this service to make it a viable business venture in the long-term.

And is this the end of the money train?

Current funds would bring the track up to safety standards for the next 10 years, but then what?

The foundation needs to show this is a solid business, one that taxpayers won’t be continually asked to subsidize.

Website cost ridiculous

I did not submit a tender for the proposed new user friendly City of Campbell River website, so I am not speaking out of my pocket.

However, I am concerned at the amount of $56,993 plus HST being spent in our present economic climate and the reason the successful applicant was awarded the contract. Having designed websites of all types since 1999 I am well aware of the requirement to have a website that is easy to navigate and user friendly.

Apparently one of the reasons the company was given the contract is that their personnel were proficient in SharePoint. SharePoint is a Microsoft software program that is available for the huge price of $159 (2010 version) and you certainly do not have to be Einstein to have this program attached to any website.

SharePoint is a great program that allows collaboration with all personnel in a company business. It really does not matter if you design a website for a City or for any other type of business, a website is a website and the basic formatting is the same. It is understandable the City of Campbell River has to have a website, but to spend this amount of money at this time in my opinion is ridiculous.

We should all be trying to support all local businesses. Any local web designer could have done this website for a third of the cost.

We should get more out to Remembrance Day

Sunday’s Remembrance Day ceremonies were well-attended as usual.

But I think they could be even better attended.

I think this year was the first year in a long, long time I attended the ceremonies as a spectator (I actually don’t like that word, I prefer to think of myself as a supporter). Usually I’m there either as a Scout leader or taking pictures for the paper. It was quite different for me not to have to shepherd a cluster of shivering youths to the cenotaph as part of the parade or bobbing and weaving in and around the ceremony participants taking pictures and getting in the way as newspaper photographers generally do. This year, reporter Kris-

ten Douglas was on duty and handled the job well.

But this year I drifted into the crowd and stood in the rain. I couldn’t see any of the actual ceremony participants because I was way at the back with the great unwashed crowd. And a couple of dogs. Why do people feel they have to bring their dogs to a Remembrance Day ceremony? What possible good could it be doing them?

Take them for a walk later, you’ve got the day off.

Anyway, afterwards I had to go to the store to pick up a prescription renewal. In the store, I noticed how many people were there shopping.

Had any of them been to the ceremony? Would it have killed them to

come down an hour earlier, attend the ceremony and then go do their shopping, like I did?

I don’t have a problem with the store being open and people doing their shopping. I know some of the shoppers probably were at the ceremony but how many weren’t? How well attended could our Remembrance Day service possibly be? It’s always impressive how many are there but it’s also amazing how many more could be there still.

Howl...I see the provincial government is forgoing the need for a wolf cull in British Columbia. Good.

Every time there’s a dearth of prey species (moose, elk, etc.) the only culprit ever seen is the wolf and the only

solution is to “cull” them (just replace the first two letters with k and i for the real meaning of that word). Blaming predators has been going on for years – just read Farley Mowat’s Sea of Slaughter – and the wolf has been the focus of centuries of culturallybased persecution (as in: who’s afraid of the Big Bad Wolf ?). The problem here is the wolf is a natural part of the ecosystem. The exploding population of humans is not. It’s the humans that need managing not the wolves.

Luckily, the provincial government is showing some wisdom in not being taken in by the age-old cull the predator argument. But Victoria’s grip on the ledge of wisdom only hangs by its fingertips at the best of times.

to introduce exotic diseases and to exacerbate endemic diseases that could have a negative impact on Fraser River sockeye.” pg 22 “In my view, the risk of serious harm that salmon farms pose to Fraser River sockeye along their entire migration route – not just 1 km from the mouth of the river – needs to be considered and reflected in siting criteria.” pg. 22 “In summary, I have

concluded that net-pen salmon farming in the Discovery Islands poses a risk of serious harm to Fraser River sockeye through the transfer of diseases and pathogens.” pg.25 For the above reasons, The C.R. Estuary Protection Group have asked Premier Clark to follow Judge Cohen’s recommendations on siting of net-pen farms in the Discovery Islands.

Stressful times for all families involved Re: Arrests a relief to slain man’s stepmom (Mirror, Nov. 8) The RCMP informed me of the arrests on Monday, Nov. 5.

I have been anxiously waiting for this day for four years.

The arrest has somewhat helped to fill a small part of the empty space that has overwhelmed since Tyler’s death. Tyler was my youngest child. I loved Tyler very much and it was painful to see the

anguish Tyler went through after his father’s death.

Unfortunately, for the parents of the accused it will also be a very stressful time.

As mothers we love our children no matter what.

I will always treasure the memories I have of Tyler’s life and await his resurrection onto a paradise earth free from pain, sickness and death.

he Campbell River Chamber of Commerce’s 80th anniversary year celebrations are coming to a close.

But they are looking to the upcoming Chamber Member & Guest Reception on Nov. 20 as one more opportunity to show support and appreciation for chamber members.

This event creates an opportunity for the broader business com-

munity to join them for an evening of networking, positive business connections and a kick off to the holiday season.

The event takes place Tuesday, Nov. 20 from 5-7:30 p.m. in the warm, inviting atmosphere of the Royal Coachman Carriage Room.

Multiple Listing Service (MLS) sales summary data for October released by the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB) shows housing sales activity across Vancouver Island dipped 10 per cent compared to last year, while average sale prices remained virtually unchanged.

In September the unit sales had declined a full 18 per cent when compared to the year before. Across VIREB’s coverage area in October there were some marked variations in unit sales when comparing one region against another. In Port Alberni/West Coast there was a decline of 56 per cent in unit sales while the Cowichan Valley showed a 23 per cent increase in unit sales.

This fluctuation is due to the small number of unit sales on most of the Island, which makes it difficult to get statistically relevant information. The average price of a single family home sold within the VIREB region in October was $324,190 down from the October 2011 average price of $325,308. The number of reported unit sales was down last month when compared to a year ago. In October 2011 there were 301 single family homes sold, in comparison 272 unit sales were recorded in October 2012.

“The market remains generally stable, albeit with annual unit

sales expected to be down about three per cent this year,” explained Cameron Muir, Chief Economist with the British Columbia Real Estate Association. “A modest increase in home sales is expected next year. However, consumer demand will nevertheless remain relatively muted.”

Comparing October 2012 to October 2011, the average sale prices across VIREB’s six zones saw: Campbell River increase three per cent to $300,870, the Comox Valley dipped six per cent to $329,756, Nanaimo’s average sales price also declined six per cent to $336,172 from the October 2011 average price of $356,453, Parksville/Qualicum prices were down three per cent to $355,965, Port Alberni/West Coast jumped a full 27 per cent to $278,065 and the Cowichan Valley declined five per cent to $318,545.

In terms of unit sales year to year there continued to be a wide disparity among the different zones last month. The Cowichan Valley region recorded a 23 per cent spike in unit sales while Port Alberni/ West Coast unit sales plunged 56 per cent compared to October 2011. Comox Valley recorded a 10 per cent increase in unit sales on a year to year basis while Campbell River sales were up eight per cent.

This project addresses two fundamental research issues of concern to fish farmers and regulators: 1) What are the significant ecological changes likely to occur at hard bottom sites associated with salmon farm operations?; and 2) What are the physical, biological and/or chemical habitat indicators and their threshold(s) at which significant negative macro-benthic changes occur? In consultation with the industry and research par tners, a two-year research program intended to address these questions was proposed.

This investigation will provide a solid foundation for future industry growth in hard bottom areas. It will also help to inform a broader, more thoughtful dialogue about the impacts of the industry in the region.

Carihi Senior Improv team gets lessons from a master Getting primed for Canadian Improv games

Graham Myers is the owner and Artistic Director of Second Storey Theatre and a founding member of Table 23 Comedy in Coquitlam.

He has been performing and teaching improv since 1998, all over the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and beyond.

Robert Hugh Jamieson September 21, 1952November 9, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our son, brother, uncle and friend.

Bob passed away peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria due to complications following a severe heart attack.

Bobby is survived by his parents, Bob and Eva-May Jamieson, his sisters, Charleen Clandening(Gordie) and Darcy Murray(Terry).

He also leaves behind four nephews, one niece, and one great nephew, as well as many dear cousins and friends from Quadra Island, Campbell River and surrounding areas.

Bobby was raised on Quadra Island amidst loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Coming from a commercial ďŹ shing family, Bobby soon found his place in the commercial ďŹ shing industry. He also tried his hand at logging which took him to the Queen Charlotte Islands for a period of time. However, he returned to his passion for ďŹ shing on the B.C. coast on which he was raised.

The family would like to express their thanks to the many doctors and nurses at St. Joseph’s ICU, and Royal Jubilee Hospital, as well as the kind and caring staff of the Salvation Army.

Eric Storback passed away in Campbell River on Friday, November 9, 2012 at the age of 71 years.

Predeceased by his brother Arnold, Eric is survived by; loving wife Carol; children, Lisa (Michael), Dave, and Evan; grandson, James; as well as sisters Mildred and Ethel.

Eric was born and raised in Campbell River and lived here his whole life. He worked most of his life in forestry and had a passion for the outdoors. He made a point of sharing his love for the outdoors with his sons by taking them out ďŹ shing and hunting.

According to Eric’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held at a later date. Cremation will take place.

Immigrant Centre celebrates 20th The Campbell River Immigrant Welcome Centre is winding up its 20th anniversary year with a pot luck celebration

Shannon Briggs, the Centre’s diversity projects coordinator, says: “Bring a dish of food and share tastes from around the world.” The event being held in the Robron Centre gymnasium begins

Building safer and healthier communities is the mission of The John Howard Society of North Island (JHSNI).

The staff and volunteers of JHSNI strive to provide caring, compassionate programs for youth, families, and adults facing challenges in their lives.

Their dedication was recognized last week when the agency won a Crime Prevention & Community Safety Award from B.C.’s Ministry of Justice.

‘Second Chance recovery House saved my life’ Don (not his real name) started using drugs and alcohol when he was 12 years old.

“After eight years of using I hit bottom,” he said. “I always felt lonely and shameful about the stuff I did,” he said.

Don’s entire family struggled with addictions and he was always in trouble with the police while under the influence.

He heard about the Second Chance Recovery House for men in Campbell River and decided to do its 28-day Supportive Recovery pro g ram. Unfor tunately, he relapsed after just one week of completing the program. A friend of Don’s who had also gone through Second Chance kept tabs on him constantly.

“He was making sure I wasn’t going to enjoy

my relapse,” said Don. When he discovered Don had started using again he phoned Second Chance for help.

Staff told him the process was to go to see a Crisis Nurse at the Campbell River Hospital and they would admit him to a Crisis Stabilization Bed (CSB). Such beds are most often used for non – medical detox and clients remain under the care of the Crisis Nurses while in that bed.

The Crisis Nurses are available seven days a week, 9:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. Don’s relapse lasted only 24 hours because of his friend’s help and his awareness of Second Chance.

“The Crisis Nurse was able to get me in right away and she was very helpful,” Don added. “I felt tremendously depressed. The rate I was going, death

was where it was going to take me.”

He spent nine days in a CSB and then transitioned into the 28-day Supportive Recovery program.

“A lot of people think people in detox just sleep for a week,” said Don. “They are quite sick, but they have a lot of work to do while they are here in detox,” said Executive Director Tessera Brooks.

Second Chance staff help detox clients connect to other community organizations,

such as Mental Health and Addictions Services, Public Health, Ministry of Social Development, Aids Vancouver Island, North Island Liver Services, Advocacy Service and the Salvation Army shelter/ housing.

During his detox period, Don started seeing a counsellor at Mental Health and Addictions Services, went to his first NA meeting and was introduced to the person who became his sponsor. He also saw

a physician who diagnosed him with anxiety and depression.

Now instead of self medicating, he is taking proper medication and is monitored on a regular basis. Don also sees a counsellor at the North Island Survivors Healing Society.

He continues to meet with his sponsor to work on his step work and attends three NA meetings each week. He also attends the daily support groups three to four times a week at Second Chance.

Brooks said the social safety net does not provide adequate funds for housing and food.

“A lot of the men entering a crisis bed will often have very little or no belongings,” noted Brooks. “Some have been living on the streets or couch surfing and have lost their belongings or had them stolen”.

ness Action Week” in Campbell River she added the public can help by donating new or gently used twin bed-size bedding, and men’s winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves and shoes.

T h e T i m b e rl i n e Senior Girls Volleyball Team, currently ranked ninth in the province in AAA, are one step closer to its season goal. That goal is to reach the BC Championships at the end of November in Vancouver.

The Wolves placed third last weekend at the North Island Championships, behind the number two and fiveranked AAA teams in B.C., which it hosted last Friday and Saturday.

We had them at match point a few times but just couldn’t finish. It was a great experience for my young team. We are playing with six Grade 10s, three Grade 11s and two Grade 12s and the young players really gain a lot from these tough matches.”

Peewee girls win bronze The Campbell River Peewee Hurricanes participated in the 14th annual Sooke Fall Female Face Off over the Remembrance Day weekend. The Hurricanes finished first in a skills competition

Ladies’ night The annual Campbell River Curling Club Ladies Bonspiel took place last weekend with 26 teams participating and sponsored by Harris Nissan. Fifteen of the teams were from out of town. Ben Luck was the caterer for the Saturday night dinner. Pictured above, the A Event, sponsored by Marleen Medvedeff-Laviolette of Remax, was won by the Smiley rink of Nanaimo. The B Event, sponsored by the Vancouver Island Insurance Centres, was won by the Thulin Rink of Campbell River. The C Event, sponsored by Susanne Grundison of RBC, was won by the Jonsson rink of Campbell River.The D Event, sponsored by Frans Hoogeven Accounting Service, was won by the Walker rink of Campbell River. With the help of many participants and volunteers, it was a very successful bonspiel.

Hurricane snag medal The Campbell River bantam girls battled back from an opening tournament loss to the Peninsula Panthers to claim a bronze medal in the Sooke Female Classic Tournament.

The bronze medal match would remain tied at the end of reg-

ulation time, forcing the team into a shootout situation.

Lisa Lloyd and Hayley Hunter scored for the Hurricane in the shootout and Jaydlin Spooner was rock solid in net to earn the Hurricanes a Bronze medal at the Sooke Tournament.

In semi-final 1, Timberline met Ballenas and lost another tight three-set match 25-19; 23-25; 11-15. “ O n c e a g a i n we fought hard but just had trouble closing,” Philp said. “Carihi also lost their semi-final to NDSS 21-25; 24-26 in a hard-fought match.”

Drive Smart BC Is the Legal Minimum Tire Tread 2X14 Depth Enough?

No doubt this morning was an intensely exciting one for a driver that I passed by this morning. She had obviously done some panicked steering on the rain soaked highway judging from the marks in the median and the amount of grass and mud in the fast lane. Others had already stopped to help and aside from being stuck in the TYEE median CHEV she and her vehicle appeared relatively unharmed.

This turned my thoughts to the tread on my tires and the question of how much tread is needed to stop and steer properly on wet roads. We know that tires are considered to be worn out at 1.5 mm or 2/32nds of an inch unless they are winter tires, in which case the limit is 3 mm or 4/32nds of an inch of tread depth. Is that really enough?

It appears that if you intend to drive on wet roads 4 mm may be the minimum tread depth needed to stop and steer effectively. Without at least this much tread the tire cannot move water away from the tread fast enough to maintain adequate traction. To drive with less tread is not illegal until you reach the legislated minimums, but it may not be safe.

One last thought and that is to buy a decent tire gauge to keep in your glove box.

Use it every couple of weeks before you start out and make sure that the tires are inflated to the specifications on your vehicle’s tire placard. Proper inflation helps tread do its part to prevent hydroplaning.
