Redesigned Beetle combines tradition with a huge dose of masculinity Canadian Press

Sleeker and broader, the redesigned Volkswagen Beetle is a car that even guys can appreciate. No longer the cute, bubble-roofed New Beetle with flower vase in the dashboard that Volkswagen brought out to much acclaim and some snickers in 1998, the Beetle is a car that combines tradition with a huge dose of masculinity.

This low-slung, wide-stanced Beetle is a car that glares at the competition, rather than smiles like its predecessor which was essentially a Golf with a rounded body and that flower vase.

And now for the first time since 2005, Volkswagen is giving buyers the option of a diesel engine. That 2.0-litre, 140-horsepower, TDI clean diesel engine joins the Beetle powerplant lineup in addition to 2.5-litre 170-hp gasoline VW staple and a 2.0-litre, 200-hp motor that will appeal to more enthusiastic drivers.

The tester is a Tornado red Comfortline model with the diesel engine and six-speed automatic direct shift gearbox. Unlike a normal automatic, the DSG

is managed by dual electronic clutches for faster, more precise shifting. In essence, it’s a manual with the work done by the car.

With its Tiptronic manual shift capability, drivers can row the six gears manually, but surely slower than the VW’s computer system will do.

The pessimists among readers might raise their eyebrows at the performance capabilities of a modestly powered diesel engine mated to an automatic transmission. One drive in this Beetle will dispel any doubts about its ability.

With a prodigious 236 lb. ft. of torque at a mere 2,500 rpm, the TDI Beetle can accelerate like a gazelle. Even at highway speeds, passing power is immediate with the DSG downshifting quickly for added thrust.

And with a Transport Canada estimated fuel economy of 40 mpg city and 56 mpg highway, this Beetle will take drivers a long way before needing a fill-up.

The tester, with a base MSRP in the low $30,000 range, is well equipped with bolstered

and heated cloth seats, a telescoping steering wheel, keyless entry push-button start, manual climate control, voice-activated Bluetooth, three-coloured ambient lighting and power everything.

The Comfortline also has heated windshield washer nozzles, driver/passenger head and thorax side airbags, hill hold assist, electronic stability control and four-wheel disc brakes.

Access to the reasonably comfortable split folding rear bench seat is simply a matter of lifting a handle on a front seat which will slide forward.

The Beetle has an MP3 readable eight-speaker sound system, front and rear cupholders, a remote release for the rear tailgate in the centre console, a full array of gauges including one for exterior temperature, two 12-volt auxiliary power outlets, and sixway manually adjustable front seats.

The tester also has a panoramic sunroof with manual shade that can be opened to let the light shine on the well-designed inte-

rior which is stunning thanks to matching red colour on the dashboard and door panels.

In homage to the original Beetle, the new model has a shallow upper glove box with old-fashioned latch as well as a deeper one below.

This Beetle is a car that drivers will have fun with. It has a tight turning radius, great cargo space and despite its shape, is superbly quiet on the highway. It has great composure when put through the twisties on freshly repaved old

highway and can be parked anywhere.

The diesel engine is never noticeable even when idling except for the fuel gauge needle barely moving even after a substantial test drive.

With any of the available engines, buyers willing to give the Beetle a look are going to discover a spacious, comfortable car that is great on fuel and hugely practical.

The Beetle is back and I’d say it’s never been better.

Redesigned Chevrolet Malibu Eco more sporty, yet spacious Canadian Press

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. _ Buyers looking for stellar fuel economy in a car don’t have to go compact or full hybrid thanks to the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco. Already a stellar option in the mid-sized market, the Malibu was redesigned by Chevrolet for the new model year. The car, whose stylish grille also graces the Equinox and Traverse crossovers, was given some Camaro mojo in its new iteration which is most obvious in the rear taillights and wider stance.

The new Malibu has a wheelbase that is 4.5 inches shorter than the outgoing model but it’s been given a broader stance with a twoinch wider stance. The car’s interior room has grown by four cubic feet of volume and has 1.5 more inches of shoulder room in front, 3.2 inches in back and three more inches of hip room. Its 14.3 cubic-foot trunk is also slightly bigger than the previous model’s.

What this means to

buyers is the Malibu is more sporty looking yet more spacious, too.

And while the welldesigned, exceptionally comfortable interior feels intimate, passengers front and rear will enjoy the accommodations for many hours on the road.

And drivers will be able to spend many hours in the Eco model thanks to the eAssist system which mates a lightweight Ecotec dual overhead cam 2.4litre engine generating 182 horsepower to a 115-volt lithium-ion battery and 15-kilowatt motor generator and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Theoretically, the Eco can get 580 highway miles - or 965 kilometres - on one 15.8-gallon (59.9-litre) tank. I sure could have used that kind of mileage on my Ontario fishing trip when the truck needed gas as often as I needed a stop from too much coffee.

Fuel economy for the Eco is rated at a stellar 35 mpg city and 53 mpg highway. And that is for a car that

will carry five adults and their gear.

The Eco also employs a fuel-saving active shutter system in the front grille which automatically closes airflow through the lower intake opening when air intake is least needed. When closed, the shutter system enhances aero performance by redirecting airflow around the front of the vehicle and down the sides, rather than through it. The shutter is open or closed based on engine coolant temperature and speed, says Chevrolet literature.

The eAssist system also gives Malibu drivers more punch when they need accelera-

tion which was clearly evident in a highway test of the red Eco this week. eAssist also includes regenerative braking which helps recharge the battery and it automatically shuts off fuel delivery when the Malibu is stopped.

The stop-start functionality is absolutely superb, I must say.

Drivers will notice the silent running at a stop light but they won’t feel the gas engine start up again when the light turns green.

GM deserves kudos for refining a system that in other vehicles I’ve driven have made those cars feel like a golf cart. eAssist also will shut off fuel deliv-

ery during deceleration to further decrease fue consumption.

Safety features on the Eco include StabiliTrak stability control and traction control, eight airbags and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. Lane departure warning and forward collision alert systems will be available later in the model year.

While the Eco is the first Malibu to roll into showrooms, there will eventually be five models.

Standard equipment in the 1LT includes dual exhaust, 10 airbags, halogen projector headlights, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth,

XM’s Satellite radio, Chevroleta’s easy-touse MyLink communications system with seven-inch colour LCD screen, tire pressure monitoring system, automatic dual zone climate control, a driver information centre with multi-colour display and 17-inch painted alloy wheels.

It also has a superb sixspeaker sound system.

The price tag? A mere $30,020.

While many automakers are installing technologically confusing infotainment systems in their vehicles, MyLink is one that can actually be mastered in seconds. The touchscreen - with as many as eight icons - is easy to navigate and has voice-activation technology that actually works plus real buttons and dials for us oldtimers.

A few options arise when drivers feel it is time to relinquish their current vehicles for new ones. When the call of a new vehicle beckons, a person can choose to sell his or her existing car or truck and pocket the profit to put toward a new one, trade in the vehicle at the dealership, or donate it to charity.

A charitable donation seems like a winwin situation for all involved. The philanthropist is able to unload an unwanted vehicle and receive a considerable tax deduction, while the charitable organization receives a car that they can put to use or sell to raise some money.

While donating a car is a generous way to give, it is important to keep in mind there is some work involved.

First, consider that the more people involved in the transaction, the less money the organization may receive.

There are companies that advertise their services to help people who want to donate their vehicles.

Typically, these companies will keep a percentage of the vehicle sales price -- which means less money will go to the charity.

Depending on the company, as much as 50 to 90 percent of the earnings could be kept by the company instead of being fully donated to the charity.

When looking for charities, choose one that can accept vehicle donations.

If they cannot use a vehicle and don’t have the means of selling one and keeping the profit, do the legwork for the charity and then donate the cash instead.

In order for the person donating the vehicle to receive a tax deduction, it is

essential to confirm the charity is an IRSor Canada Revenue Agency-approved charitable organization with a tax-exempt status. Afterward, it is important to follow up with the charity to find out the sales price they received for the vehicle if they did the sale on their own. When filing taxes, it will be necessary to provide evidence of how much the charity received for the car or truck.

The only exemption to this is if the charity keeps the vehicle or if the donation is worth less than $500. Then it is possible to simply report the fair market value of the vehicle based on pricing sources, such as Kelly Blue Book.

Remember that any vehicle or boat donation will require that ownership be transferred over to the charity.

This safeguards the person doing the donating from any violations the vehicle might incur after it is no longer in possession of the private owner.

This may include parking tickets.

It is adviseable to formally retitle the vehicle in the charity’s name.

To receive the maximum benefit from the vehicle donation, individuals must be diligent in keeping accurate records and report the transfer to the appropriate agency.

This protects donors from losing out on a tax deduction or facing any legal ramifications down the line. It also helps the reputable charity receive the most benefit from the donation.

Charities can be vetted through organizations such as Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.

After which a donation of a vehicle can benefit all parties involved.
