Work to relieve the pressure on Providence Dam is scheduled to end on Nov. 15 according to Fisheries Biologist Tara White from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

Years for new building Council received a letter from resident Bill Morse complaining MIDWAY about the issuing of burning permits within municipal boundaries.

“There is no way that smoke from these open fires can be controlled,” he said.

At the suggestion of Kappes council has asked staff to prepare a report on how other municipalities are handling the issue. *** RCMP Chief Superintendent Mike Sekela, District Commander Southeast District, was joined by Inspector Nick Romanachuk, Officer in Charge Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment, and Corporal Kevin Christenson when the police were asked to appear before Midway council at their regular meeting on Nov.5, 2012.

They had been asked to clarify the status of a new detachment building in Midway. The village had made property available to the RCMP for a new building beside the museum a few years ago.

Sekela explained that replacement of the detachment had been prioritized by his predecessor as fourth in the district and that it now sits at 15th on the provincial list “That sound like good news,” he said, “but the bad news is the economic times. Detachments were once being built one to two per year, but now it is probably one every two years.”

He said he would review the prioritization assigned by his predecessor but also mentioned the option of renovation, but that capital costs are shared 70 per cent from the province and 30 per cent from the federal government.

Councillor Marguerite Rotvold questioned the business sense of renovating a 50 or 60 yearold building.

Other issues discussed with the RCMP included the protocol for closure of a highway at an accident scene. In July an accident on Hwy 3 just west of Midway had the road closed in both directions for several hours.

Midway resident Bill Morse, who was in the gallery, suggested a speed board be located in the school zone beside the high school. *** The second delegation was from the Old Country Western Bluegrass Festival. Council had asked staff to prepare a report tracking expenses incurred by the village in accommodating the annual festival and festival organizers had been asked to come and discuss it.

According to the report employee time comes in at $750, plus the electricity and use of the arena. In the past festival organizers have paid

$500 to the village – with the balance of their profits being distributed to community groups. In 2012 the group donated $200 each to the library and museum and $400 to Pines Bible Camp. It was noted that the two groups in the village already receive an annual grant from the village.

“We have to come up with something that works for you and for the village,” commented Councillor Gary Schierbeck. A motion was passed to increase the fee charged to the bluegrass festival organizers to a maximum of $1,000 – providing they make that much. “Please understand we are not trying to chase you away or to make any money, we are just trying to cover our costs,” said Councillor Darrin Metcalfe. *** Gerry Shaw attended the meeting on behalf of the Boundary Minor Hockey Association in response to concerns raised by Rotvold last month about a decision taken by the board not to have bantam rep hockey in Midway this year.

Shaw said the decision had been a tough one for the association executive, and the final vote was not unanimous. “But out of this has come a determination to put in place a protocol to be used to help guide a similar decision in future years,” he told council.

“We [council] are not here to tell minor hockey how to make their decisions,” Mayor Randy Kappes told Shaw. “We were hearing a lot of rumours and misinformation as to what was going on. As one member of council I supported heavily the application for the [arena upgrade] grant and we believe the minor hockey was one of the things in the community that was going well and we wanted to see it furthered.”

Rotvold said that the taxpayers of Midway subsidize the arena. “I as a taxpayer am subsidizing the operation of that and when a board can make a decision that has a financial impact on me as a taxpayer, not as a councillor, I am concerned. There should be better communications,” said Rotvold.

“One of the positive things coming out of this is that the members recognize the fact there is a loss of revenue and they are trying to find different ways to bring revenue to the arena,” said Shaw. “By having play dates this season – each team in each category to have at least one tournament which does bring a lot of revenue and people to the community. The board is working to put as much effort and financial assistance back into the arena as we can.” ***

White said that plans will be developed for a foreshore rehabilitation in the spring - planting native species and perhaps a small dock on the north side of the lake for recreational fishing.

She said they will be working with adjoining land owners.“They have some preferences that they’d like to see in the plan and we are going to do our best to accommodate that,” said White.

She is also hoping to use the site as an educational opportunity for the local school students similar to what is being done in conjunction with

Jenny Coleshill and the Granby Wilderness Society.

Also on tap for this winter will be development of deactivation plans for the dam itself. “We have to put together an engineered plan and it has to be submitted for approval.”

The lake is being drained because of concerns about risk and liability should Providence Dam ever fail. White noted a pipe at the bottom of the dam has water running around it rather than through it and the concern that it may one day wash out.

Meanwhile those opposed to the draining of the lake are hoping that decommissioning will proceed but that the lake will be allowed to refill.

It’s all about finding peace of mind

To find their peace of mind many go to the mountains.

That’s only half the story for long-time West Boundary resident Dave (Davie) Hoenderop. He likes to dig holes in the mountains.

You see, he prefers living in the Monashee Mountains of the Boundary to the Lower Mainland where he grew up – but he also likes running equipment. “It is something I really enjoy doing,” says Davie.

So he recently brought a 2006 Case 580SM rubber tired 4WD backhoe to the Kettle Valley. He operates the machine under the company name Newton Construction Company Ltd. – a company founded in 1973 by his grandpa in Newton-Surrey. “My dad still runs the business,” says Hoenderop. “He works full-time down there with it and I thought I’d branch out with it up here; try it and see if we could make a go of it.”

Davie bought his machine, a one-owner, one-operator unit, about five months ago from Parker-Pacific in Langley. “It’s got just over 5,000 hours on it so it should be reliable for another 3,000 to 4,000 hours with very few breakdowns.”

Since his dad has had Case backhoes for years Davie tapped him for some advice when he bought the backhoe.

“He’s had Case backhoes since well before I was born and he knows exactly what goes wrong on them and where and what to look for,” explained Davie. “In fact, he has the same machine as mine but newer.”

Hoenderop moved to the Boundary from Surrey 17 years ago. “I had some friends and relatives who lived up here and when I was a kid we used to come up hunting and camping in the summer. I came up every chance I could – spring break, Christmas break, summer break – and then one summer I decided to stay. I finished high school at BCSS and started calling Kettle Valley home.”

worked for both Newton Construction and other contractors.

He turned wrenches for Pourboys for about eight years and worked another couple for Mid-Boundary. Now he has a day job running equipment on a local farm. “They have an excavator and a bulldozer and a dump truck. Boundary Central Secondary School New teacher at Boundary Student giving back

BY RHYA MERRELL One of our grade twelve students, Jennifer Hoffmeister, has been working with a organization called “To Write Love on Her Arm”. It is a non-profit movement that helps people with depression, suicide, self-injury and addiction.

Since October 1, Jennifer has been working hard to create awareness about the group and what they are working towards. Each month Jennifer has to do at least one community activity. At the end of each month she sends information on what she did and how much money she raised to the group.

Last summer, Jennifer saw someone wearing a t-shirt with the logo on it and decided to check out the website. She found out that one could do the program in high school so she signed up and got to work. She is doing this as part of her Leadership 12 course, and it is organized with the help of Student Council.

What drew Jennifer to this issue was the possibility of helping people, which is something she may do as a future career. Right now it gives her excellent practice. She also enjoys that it isn’t overly time consuming. For example, Jennifer still has time to focus on her studies. The organization itself is very friendly, and gives Jennifer helpful advice and suggestions.

The main challenge that Jennifer is facing is the small number of people who surround her. It is difficult to get people involved and motivated to participate in the activities that she wants to do. Regardless of these challenges, she is doing an excellent job.

She must complete all her events by December 7, so please keep your eyes out for more information. Also, please take a look at the website for this organization at www.twloha.com. There is great information about the movement, how to get help, and a beautiful story to read.

Grease is the word

Mr. Nick Bond has recently become a part of our great staff here at Boundary Central Secondary.

He was born in Sault Saint Marie and raised in London, Ontario.

He had a great childhood. He did not care much for school, but he remembers having so much fun during the summers. He enjoyed swimming lessons, running around with bare feet and playing soccer. An only child, he had a dog and his parents worked very hard. Just like many Boundary students, he hated the long bus ride to school. He liked high school, though, because he could play sports there.

Mr. Bond loves basketball, and claims that Michael Jordan is the best player ever. He recorded all of Jordan’s games and watched them all summer long, until the tapes wouldn’t even work anymore. Bond says that a few of his accomplishments are getting the job as the Special Education teacher here and getting the opportunity to teach in South Korea, Africa, and Big White.

When asked about his thoughts on teaching, Mr Bond stated he is a team player, asserting “I think the whole part of this job is about working together, getting along with other teachers and helping all types of students.”

Mr. Bond’s outlook on life is to try your best and don’t waste time, believing that “Life is short, make the most of it.” His biggest dream already has come true: he found a job in B.C, with a great place to live that is semi- rural and he plans to live here for a very long time. His new dream is to settle down with his wife and raise a family.

Mr. Bond has some great hobbies, including golfing, hunting, and playing basketball, hockey, and snowboarding. He really enjoys being at our school, which is obvious with his friendly, welcoming manner.

For this year’s Christmas production the students in Ms. Tripp’s drama and music classes are putting on a performance of one of the most loved musicals, Grease. This concert, filled with great acting, dancing, and singing, will be performed at 7:00 pm on December 13, 17, 18, and 19.

Each ticket will be $10 for adults and $5 for ages 12 and under. It will be performed in our beautiful theatre. Keep in mind there is limited seating so it may be wise to reserve seats in advance.

If you would like to make reservations, call Sue at the office at 250-449-2224. The tickets can be picked up at the school or paid for at the door.

Our Spirit Club will be having a silent auction and a raffle in the commons to help raise money for this awesome club. There will also be a donation box for non-perishable items for the Lions Christmas Food Hamper Drive.

The past few weeks I have spent some time in the Drama room having the privilege to watch the students work hard to make this play a success. Good job to all the actors, musicians, backstage crew and to Ms. Tripp for bringing back a musical performance to Boundary Central Secondary.

You don’t have to feel guilty How much greenhouse gas results from a newspaper compared to reading the news on a computer screen? Is the carbon balance of the printed newspaper worse than online newspapers?

The question is relevant today, when print is under attack as a ‘deadwood’, tree-killing industry.

The popular belief that digital is better than print has been challenged recently by a report from the European-based of Newspapers and News Publishers .

The report brings together information from six studies carried out in Finland and Sweden between 2010 and 2012 regarding the environmental impact in the production of newspapers.

The report, “Carbon Footprint of News Publishing,” shows that, from an environmental point of view, there is no reason to reject the printed newspaper in favour of an electronic version.

Depending on the reading habits and length of reading time, the printed newspaper in many cases beats online and mobile platforms, in terms of CO2 production.

The report also shows that the amount of energy required to produce newsprint is less than for all other types of paper used in publishing, and that the base material for a large share of newsprint is recycled waste paper.

The length of time spent reading an online article has great bearing on the question, and if the reader links to other articles the carbon footprint will increase.

Alternatively printed newspapers can be shared by readers, which will further lessen the greenhouse gas impact.

So question isn’t so black and white as it might appear and this new report suggests you may sit back and enjoy your paper without feeling guilty about it.

Brain meant to move: Anaka

Gary Anaka the ‘Brain Coach’ returned to the Boundary recently with presentations in both Grand Forks and Rock Creek. A quick check of his speaking schedule on his website shows how fortunate the local community is to have him come to give two appearances to four audiences last week. Thursday last he gave two presentations at GFSS called “The Magical Teenage Brain” and on Friday and Saturday he presented “Brain Wellness: the Secrets of Longevity” in Rock Creek.

“We know now from neuroscientist studies that the brain is totally, completely organized and meant to be on the move,” Anaka told The Times on Friday morning. “Your body is meant to be moving, your brain is meant to be moving. What do I mean by that?”

“You have to continuously learn. Everyday of your life you are learning something. You are doing something and you put those two together and you have the right combination for a healthy brain.”

Anaka has authored two books: Your Magical Brain: How It Learns Best and Brain Wellness: The Secrets for Longevity. The range of his work can be fully explored at www.braincoach.ca The Friday session at West Boundary Elementary was followed by a lunch of homemade soups and breads prepared by Local Food Sharing, and a Mozart recital in the library by Vivien Browne.

In the afternoon there were demonstrations of brain integration exercises that can be used to improve memory by Peri Best and Art of Balance.

According to Ann Rexin an Art of Balance drop-in will begin soon – starting date to be announced. But they are planning to meet each Thursday from 4-5 p.m. at West Boundary Elementary School gym – four weeks before the holiday season and then start up again in January.

There is a $2 fee per session.

Rexin said there are a lot of things brought up

by Anaka’s work that fits in well with Art of Balance principles, such as crossing the bodies midline and doing things with your fingers such as juggling, knitting or art.

Gave an inaugural speech for togetherness and espoused the need for committees to get fair jobs done co-operatively. No mention of getting to the bottom of a financial crisis that came from Mary Lautard’s term. Nobody knew of a crisis until his recent claims of wanting to

solve one. His meeting styles were informal, putting it mildly. He preferred to just talk and, if it wasn’t for the constant prompting, wouldn’t even follow an agenda. He was responsible for the pavilion upgrades and the associated grants. He left it until the fall of 2010 to begin work then saddling Randy with the responsibility of “getting er done”, even throwing in an imaginary grant of $20,000 for the dais. However he does take credit for ensuring Coleen conceived and gave birth to her babies.

Randy’s board: Randy was given short notice to decide to stand as president as Art backed out two days prior to the AGM. Meetings were formal and controlled, following proper procedure and form. This year a financial protocol manual was formed, the constitution/bylaws will finally be updated and registered, extensive security measures were implemented, the grounds were returned to pristine condition and this year’s fair was a huge success.

BCRCC Valve replacement near Ingram Bridge.

FortisBC gas crews upgrading FortisBC gas crews have been active doing capital upgrade projects in the area recently. This valve replacement was done near Ingram Bridge over the past few weeks. Before that the crew were also to be seen working on Cemetery Road above Midway.

“This is a capital upgrade,” said Paul Kropp, Pipeline Operations Manager, Interior. “It is ongoing maintenance on our system to make sure it is safe and reliable.”

The pipeline was originally laid in the 1950s but the valve

being replaced this year was put in in the 1970s. The new design will bring the valve assembly above grade, which will make it easier to maintain.

Across the river, just to the west of the Ingram Bridge worksite FortisBC was also installing an isolation point in the field.

Kropp said they were working on the transmission line so there was no disruption of service to anyone locally.

Kropp was in charge of the Kelowna-based crew that did the work, the twelfth valve they have swapped out this year.

There are several debilitating statements that drive me nuts. The “There is nothing to do!” statement in particular, mainly because it has developed into an attitude of “There is nothing I can do”.

Folks, there is always something you can do.

My parents are in their late seventies, yet each year they travel from Ontario to Texas, Florida and BC. No, not to vacation, but to build low income housing. Sure they have their ailments like everyone else, but they have worked on correcting any negative attitudes regarding those ailments. They like many others have repented of self-centeredness and self pity. They have dumped the “Poor Me” and do not expect everyone to understand what they are “going through”. We too must challenge the sin of self pity and self criticism.

Far too many of us are held back by self imposed barriers of fear. If you dwell on your fears you will avoid forming relationships and withdraw further into the wasteland of loneliness. II Timothy 1:7 God has not given us the spirit of fear.

“Reach Out and Touch Someone”, is far more than a slogan for a telephone Service. We must take the initiative to reach others. Proverbs 18:24 For a man to have friends he must show himself friendly.

I heard a wonderful story regarding the days shortly after the tragic events at Virginia Tech. An elderly woman took her two dogs to the campus.

Young people would stop her and inquire if they could pet the dogs. “Yes dear, of course, that is why we are here”, was her reply. It seems she wanted to do something for the students in the wake of the mass murders. All she could think about was how her dogs gave her comfort. So off she went. The sign she posted beside her said, “Need love? Please pet my dogs.” You see, there is always something you can do!

Relationships do not just happen. They take time and effort. Yes they are risky, but it is a risk worth taking. The creator of Peanuts said, “Life is like a ten-speed bike. Most of us have gears we never use.”

Finally why not volunteer to help out in the community. Strange but true, you find yourself by giving yourself away.

If you are given the chance to sit it out or dance… I hope you dance!

Rally held at MLA’s office Boundary-Similkameen MLA John Slater’s Osoyoos office was one of 76 constituency offices around the province hit with a rally at noon Wednesday, Oct. 24.

According to a news release issued by Defend our Coast (defendourcoast.ca) province-wide support and facilitation was provided by online campaign organization Leadnow.ca and the Oct. 24 event drew over 7,000 people across the province.

“People from all walks of life – First Nations, ranchers, fishermen, business owners, foresters, teachers – are coming together like never before to form a wall of opposition and to call on our provincial leaders to defend our coast from tar sands pipelines and tankers,” said Nadia Nowak, Local Outreach Coordinator for Leadnow.ca. “These pipelines affect all British Columbians.”

Rock Creek resident Erika Tafel was the volunteer community host for the Osoyoos event. Tafel told The Times that 45 people attended the rally at Slater’s office.

She said people were in a good mood. “Their commitment to no pipelines was inspiring. Many said they would attend more rallies.”

Upgrades to school grounds In Hanlon’s report, she noted that all irrigation systems have been flushed and prepared for winter.

“The leaves are still falling from trees so we’re hoping they will be picked up before the snow falls,” she said. “We also have had a problem with the deer messing up the playing fields. We have hired a bus driver to clean up the grounds.”

Aboriginal information and culture through Moodle An Adobe Connect planning session included teachers from the Boundary, Arrow Lakes, Haida Gwaii and Gold Trail School Districts to discuss Aboriginal education held in October.

The session discussed methods and opportunities for students to increase their knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal information, culture and other issues.

Maxine Ruzicka, the director of instruction, reported it helps connect students to other students, “and to have thoughtful dialogue on a variety of topics that would not be available without these teachers and district administrators (who are) working together as a professional learning community.”

Ruzicka was in Kelowna attending another meeting and was not present at this month’s school board meeting.

The next SD51 school board meeting will be held on Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. at the School Board Office in Grand Forks.

Turkey shoot Sunday

It’s busy at the Kettle Wildlife Association, with a spaghetti dinner this past Saturday night, Nov. 10 and the annual Turkey Shoot this weekend.

The Turkey Shoot will start at 10 a.m. on Nov. 18. Novices are welcome and encouraged. For more information call Dave at 250-446-2738. The KWA Trap Club has a special incen-

tive program to try to attract more junior shooters. Juniors, 18 and under can shoot two rounds free of charge each week.

Other trap news of note from the summer was the excellent showing made by both Geoff and Trish Fern in July at the 2012 Grand Pacific hosted

by Evergreen Sportsmen’s Club in

Olympia, Washington.

Geoff won the Veteran Trophy for the Pacific International Trapshooting Doubles Championship in a shoot off.

Trish took Champion of Champions – BC and came in second overall. “That is amongst all the state and provincial teams in PITA,” explained Geoff, “so her score gave BC the second place.”

On the social/fundraising side, the KWA will host their 8th annual Spaghetti Dinner this Saturday night at 1635 Dump Road.

The doors open at 5 and dinner starts at 6. $10 adults, $5 ages 6-12; kids five and under free. Beer and wine are being served.
