LKB chief leading walk for addictions awareness

Chief Jason Louie will be joined

by Lower Kootenay Band members and others at 10 a.m. Nov. 19 in a walk to recognize National Addictions Awareness Week.

Participants will be delivering a handmade sturgeon nose, or Kutenai, canoe that will be presented to the Creston Valley Hospital after carrying it from the Lower Kootenay administration centre.

“Like the hospital, the canoe represents life,” said Louie.

The canoe was made during a youth cultural boot camp in July, a project led by him and two other instructors.

“We were operating on memory, from what we had seen as children, and from viewing some film footage,” he said. “We asked the boot camp participants what to do with the canoe and they wanted to donate it to an organization that would appreciate it.

“National Addictions Awareness Week is an annual event and it seemed like a good fit to do this as part of the activities from November 19-24.”

endless. And the weather should be cold, so we don’t feel very comfortable. The least we can do is get an understanding of their pain for at least a couple of hours.”

Presenting the canoe to the hospital is meant as a good will gesture to help improve relations between the medical community and Lower

Kootenay Band members.

“The canoe is a symbol of who we are as a valley — there’s no other place in the world that has anything similar,” he said.

The walk will begin at 10 a.m., with participants taking turns carrying the canoe.

Anyone is welcome to join in.

This year, Creston’s Matt Hansen placed second and the Jesse Dumas-Jairus Stonehouse duo placed third in the region — just below Cranbrook’s Trena Speers — after competing against winners from Kimberley, Trail, Nelson, Grand Forks and Rossland.

“We laid a very positive groundwork for every one of those communities,” said Gorham. “It’s exciting to see where it’s going to go. I think we’ll have many more singers coming out and many more watching.”

As usual, audience voting will play a big part in the contest. On Jan. 31, 30 singers will compete, and the audience will whittle those down to 20 to compete on Feb. 14. Audience voting will then narrow those down to 10, who will compete by singing two songs for outof-town judges in March.

The addition of the third night and a greater length of time between nights for the

adult category mean that singers will have more opportunity to prove their talent.

“It will give a chance for people to work on songs,” said Gorham. “Potentially, a singer could sing four times.”

Creston isn’t the only place the contest is expanding. In the West Kootenay, some of the contests are also adding a night, with audiences voting at an audition night hosted by a school in each community.

“They’ll handle my auditions for me and use it as a fundraiser,” said Gorham.

If it sounds like a lot to organize, it is — but it’s all worth it in the end, particularly when it’s time for the regional competition.

“We have tremendous talent in Creston and the Kootenays,” Gorham said. “There’s talent that should be showcased and shared. It makes for a really fun night to hear local singers of a high quality.”

Singing contest getting bigger

The fourth annual Creston’s Best Singer contest returns next month, and will be bigger than before.

The 2013 edition will be comprised of four nights, expanded from two (quarterfinal and semifinal/final) in 2011 and 2012, starting with a youth division contest on Dec. 4 at the Prince Charles Theatre.

“I had 10 or 15 parents say, ‘My child would love to sing in your contest but doesn’t want to compete with 40-year-olds,’ ” said producer-host Vern Gorham.

The youth contest will be open to singers 14 and under, and the top two will advance to the semifinal round on Feb. 14, competing against the top 20 adults singers from the Jan. 31 quarterfinal. The top 10 from the semifinal will compete in the final round on March 7.

Annual Operation Memoir offers refreshing Christmas Child look at former RDCK chair boxes ready for toys and gifts REVIEW

Canadian literature isn’t exactly teeming with memoirs of small-town mayors. Among those that have been written it’s hard to imagine that there has been a funnier, more insightful result. Welcome, readers, to the weird, wacky and wonderful world of Gary Wright, longtime mayor of New Denver and former chair of the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK).

Wright, like fellow ex-pat American Corky Evans, wound up in Canada because of his objections to the Vietnam War. His book, Unrepentant: The Story of an Era, has only one real flaw that I can think of.

At 200 pages, it’s too short.

I know Wright mostly by his reputation, information gleaned mostly from Crestonites who have served with him in various local government capacities. In the times that I’ve seen him acting in an official capacity I have found him to be fair-minded, extremely knowledgeable and quick-witted. When I received a review copy in the mail I was completely unprepared for the reading experience I was about to enjoy. Halfway through the book, I went to bed that night, then woke up at 3 a.m., thinking about what I had read. I turned on the bedside lamp and finished it.

Born in Montana to a Republican family, Wright’s story of transformation to a radical began when he left home to attend university in Missoula, Mont. It was the 1960s and the anti-war movement was just beginning to gather momentum.

One thing led to another and Wright got involved with Students for a Democratic Society, a membership that

would land him on an FBI watch list and eventually get him planning a move to Canada.

Unrepentant starts with those university and protest years and takes the reader through his two decades as a musician and, shall we say, free spirit, before he arrived in New Denver. Wright was working as the town’s janitor when he was first encouraged to run for a vacant spot on town council. A few months later, in 1989, the New Denver mayor resigned due health reasons and Wright got the job, one he would hold on to for nearly a quarter-century.

For much of that time, he also served as New Denver’s RDCK director and was for a number of years the board’s chair.

In an early chapter of Unrepentant, a chapter he calls “Purple Haze”, Wright takes on the task of explaining the drug issue: From time to time, people we don’t know pick certain drugs to be legal and others to be outlawed.

This is necessary in order to provide worthwhile career opportunities for policemen, criminals, jailors, lawyers, judges and lawmakers who would otherwise have to become firemen, teachers, farmers or better cooks.

If you sell legal drugs, you are called a pharmacist. That’s okay.

If you sell illegal drugs, you are called a pusher.

That’s not okay.

If you use legal drugs you are called a consumer or a patient. That’s okay.

If you use illegal drugs, you are called a doper or an addict. Not okay.

If you plant hops, you are called a farmer. Okay.

If you plant hemp, you are called a grower. Not okay.

Distill spirits in Saudi Arabia and you can be executed.

Distill spirits in America and your son can become president.

It’s all wonderfully arbitrary, depending on what century and what country you are living in. There is no rhyme nor reason for this, so you had best be your own judge of what works best for you. It will involve some trial and error. Good luck.

Near the end of Unrepentant, Wright includes a chapter called “A Canadian Primer for Yankees”, in which he describes the differences in our federal systems, explaining in humorous terms the roles of the prime minister, senators and governor-general: Historically the country runs better during the periods when it has no government than it ever does when the elections are over and a new one proceeds to once again dash the hopes of the electorate.

Wright’s book is a refreshing look into the life of a man who has never stopped trying to make sense of the world around him, who wears his values on his sleeve and who never made the too-often fatal political mistake of taking himself too seriously.

Creston Valley readers may be especially interested in a chapter written by Corky Evans, a moving and sobering account of the former MLA and cabinet minister’s transformation from a youngster who assumed that a stint in the armed forces, and tour of duty in Vietnam, would be part of his life to becoming a respected left-wing politician and orator.

Wright also includes chapters about Area B director John Kettle, who succeeded him as chair of the RDCK board.

I don’t remember when I enjoyed a book more than Unrepentant.

BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor In what has become an annual tradition, Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church is collecting for Operation Christmas Child, a program that sees toys, school supplies and more delivered to children in developing countries.

Run by Samaritan’s Purse, a non-denominational evangelical Christian organization that has provided spiritual and physical aid around the world since 1970, the program involves filling shoebox-sized containers with items purchased locally for a boy or girl in the 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 age ranges, along with a $7 donation to cover shipping and other project costs.

More than 400 boxes were shipped from Creston last year — a total of 672,274 were collected in Canada in 2011 — and the numbers look to be similar this year, said Glad Tidings Pastor Gary Forsyth, thanks to the efforts of Kelly Miller and Ann Cote.

“He’s been setting people up and getting them organized,” said Forsyth. “She’s been heading up getting them into schools.”

The Operation Christmas Child boxes can be picked up at Glad Tidings or Your Dollar Store With More, then filled and dropped off at the church on or before Nov. 23 to allow for packing and shipping to the Calgary processing centre.

The program is nothing new to Creston, where it’s been going for over a decade, and certainly nothing new to Forsyth, who came to Creston two years ago. His previous church in Airdrie, Alta, held a big drive every year, collecting over 300 boxes from church members alone. The church would then send a team to the Samaritan’s Purse warehouse,

where each box is opened, examined and repacked for shipping.

This year, Operation Christmas Child boxes will be sent to Costa Rica, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Uruguay and Venezuela.

About eight years ago, Forsyth was in Cambodia, and was able to see firsthand the effect the boxes have on children.

“We were able to get all the kids from the neighbourhood together and hand them out,” he said. “To say they have nothing is an exaggeration. They’re never given anything, ever.”

But better than just giving things to the children, Operation Christmas Child allows Samaritan’s Purse workers to do even more for the locals.

“These open up doorways for the guy in Cambodia to do social work in the community,” said Forsyth.

Mustaches highlight slow week for RCMP

With only 55 calls to respond to from November 5-11, the highlight of the RCMP week was the continued growth of mustaches on the participants in the annual Movember fundraiser for cancer research. Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said he has relaxed grooming requirements so he and other male members can participate.

November 5 •A 911 call from Highway 3A was determined to have been caused by a tree falling on phone lines.

•Minor damage resulted in a two-vehicle collision on 10th Avenue North.

•A well-being check on a Masuch Road resident revealed he was okay, but his phone service wasn’t.

•No injuries were reported in a minor two-vehicle collision in a Canyon Street parking lot.

•A female driver complained that someone lectured her about 11th Avenue South being a 30kph zone.

•A complaint of fraud was

received from 18th Avenue South.

•No trace could be made of a 911 call through the Whimster Road cell phone tower.

November 6 •Police served a summons to an Aspen Road residence on behalf of Cranbrook RCMP. •A cell phone 911 call through the Riley Road tower could not be traced.

•Tools were stolen when a John Deere grader was broken into on the Big Bear Forest Service Road.

•Police received a report that two males started a red Toyota truck with a screwdriver on 9th Avenue North and drove away but no report of a theft has been received.

November 7 •Police were unable to locate a vehicle reported as being driven without insurance on Oliver Road.

•When police conducted a well-being check on a male on 11th Avenue South, they found him on the floor. He said he’d been there for two days, suffering from a gout attack. He was taken to hospital by ambulance.

•911 calls through the Riley Road and Topaz Creek cell phone towers could not be traced.

•Police attended an Evans Road residence to keep the peace while a female removed her belongings.

•A driver who claimed to have swerved to avoid a deer on Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road rolled the vehicle onto its roof. Police are investigating and believe speed may have been a factor.

and Columbia Valley Rockies each win in their own arenas.

“It was an okay game, actually,” Creston coach Josh Hepditch said on Monday. “We didn’t get the breaks we were looking for, but we outshot them 31-21.

The more we can do that the more success we’ll have in the future.”

Hepditch said Jmaeff has played well since he has been part of the starting lineup.

Jmaeff, goaltender Zach Straza and Jonathan Watt were named the game’s three stars. Straza and Tyler Moffat having been alternating in net since Moffat’s return to the team a couple of weeks ago.

Creston went into Tuesday night’s game against division-leading Fernie Ghostriders in fourth place in the tight Eddie Mountain division, three points up on the Rockies and three points behind the Golden Rockets.

“Tonight’s game against Fernie should be a good test for us, that’s for sure,” Hepditch said.

The Cats will be short a couple of players due to injury and Matthew Murray will be sitting out the final game of his suspension. Ty Kronewitt will also be unavailable as he sits out a one game suspension for getting a game misconduct at the end of Saturday night’s game.

Kronewitt crossed the red line at the end of the game as he berated a Columbia Valley player, earning the misconduct and suspension.

Help with Seasonal Sleep Patterns Now that the days are shorter and it’s dark around suppertime, our bodies must adjust to this lack of light. This adjustment can sometimes be difficult on its own and can be compounded by changes in one’s day-to-day routine, different surroundings, time changes and yes . . . medications. Often our mood and the presence of emotions like anxiety and depression can have major effects on our sleep patterns.

Sleep normally takes up 1/3 of our day and is important to our psychological well-being. Our normal sleep patterns are made up of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and Non Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) states and our individual sleep patterns each have different time spent in each state through the night.

Within REM and NREM states there are different stages of sleep categorized by brain wave activity. It turns out that studies have shown that as we grow older, our sleep patterns change and we spend less time in deep sleep and more time in light sleep which often results in nighttime wakefulness. This age-related disturbance is usually mild and does not interfere with day-to-day activities unless the individual cannot fall back to sleep.

There are many medications that can cause sleep disturbances, such as high blood pressure meds, anti-depressants, anti-convulsants, cough and cold and pain medications, to name a few. There are also various foods and drinks that, if taken too close to bedtime, may increase sleep latency or cause nighttime wakefulness.

Identifying the factors that cause sleep problems such as increased sleep latency (falling asleep), poor maintenance of

sleep (nocturnal wakefulness) and poor quality of sleep is key to treatment.

Management of sleep disturbances often starts with good sleep hygiene, which includes maintaining regular sleep schedules (bedtime and wakeup), going to bed only when sleepy, avoiding daytime naps, and avoiding foods, drinks and medications that can cause sleep problems.

Alcohol has been shown to cause fragmented sleep and should be consumed in moderation. Heavy meals can also cause sleep problems, as can vigorous exercise within 3 hours of going to bed. Minimizing noise, bright light and extreme temperatures in the bedroom and developing some relaxing rituals (reading a book) prior to sleep will help.

There are a few over-the-counter medications that can help with sleep such as antihistamines like diphenhydramine but often tolerance to its’ sleepinducing effects can happen within a short time; it also has interactions with other medications and side effects (such as dry mouth and blurred vision).

Herbal products such as chamomile, hops, passion flower, wild lettuce and valerian have been shown to be helpful, although studies have not been conclusive and individuals with allergies must be careful with these products.

Melatonin can be useful for a short duration (5 day therapy) when travelling, or adjustments to changes in light can help. Seasonal Affective Disorder (or SAD) lights provide bright, natural light (thought to help the body cope with seasonal light changes) are now available.

Everyone has an opinion and no one, at least that I am aware, has a solution. And nothing has changed in the more than three decades that I have been in Creston.

Last week the Bountiful community was a popular subject in the news. Once again. This time the story was about the fallout from the closure of Bountiful school, leaving more than 200 students temporarily, at least, out of the public education system. Depending on your point of view, it might not have been a bad thing when the majority arrived in September to enroll in Homelinks, Kootenay Lake School District’s supported home schooling program.

The story of the Bountiful closure actually begins more than a year ago when the Fraser Institute’s famously flawed rating system put the school right at the top among all provincial schools. It wasn’t without a raised eyebrow that I contacted Bountiful principal Merrill Palmer to do a story about the recognition. He might not have been doing cartwheels, but he was no doubt happy to be recognized in such a way. I doubt any of our public school principals would have responded differently.

A few months later I ran into Palmer, whom I happen to like very much, and learned that he had been fired shortly after my story came out.

We could only guess that Warren Jeffs, self-proclaimed leader of many Fundamentalist Latter-day Saints followers, had taken umbrage at the school drawing attention to the part of the Bountiful community that he still appears to control, despite the fact that he is in jail for pedophilia.

With the respected Palmer given his walking papers, it shouldn’t have come as a huge surprise that the school was closed outright this fall. There is no evidence that Jeffs is

the mere snap of the jailbound, but obviously not muzzled, Jeffs.

Meanwhile, pundits from afar, and some locals, put up the usual argument that children should be forced to attend public schools, that polygamists should be prosecuted, that the community should be broken up and the members be integrated into mainstream society. I don’t have any philosophical objection to those arguments, but I also freely admit that I have no solution for the problem.

Volunteers important to library

In the next couple of columns, I would like to take the opportunity to highlight some of the amazing work that volunteers do for our library and our community.

When I worked at the Vancouver Public Library, people would often approach me about volunteer opportunities at the library.

Unfortunately, at VPL — as at many urban and regional library systems — there is no role for volunteers, and we had to turn those good people away.

One of the things I love about my new job here is the opportunity to work with such a diverse and active group of volunteers. We have high school students advising me on what books to buy for the teen section, another team of dedicated souls delivering library books to homebound patrons, and a greyhaired army of former teachers, librarians and folks from all walks of life helping to shelve books, clean shelves and keep the library and staff in order. Thank you to all of you!

I’d also like to tell about a special group of volunteers who are giving their time to assist elementary school aged children learn to read. The program is called Readers are Leaders.

Students meet weekly with a trained reading buddy and gain confidence in reading cognition, comprehension and speed. The library arranges tutor

training, tutor-student matching and program oversight.

Stiglitz argues that our faith in fundamentalist capitalism (i.e. Adam Smith’s “invisible hand”) is detrimental both to society as a whole and to the one per cent who appear to benefit the most. He proposes an alternative approach to capitalist economics that is both more efficient and, importantly, more fair and equitable. Personally, I’m more interested in how Llama Llama’s shopping trip turned out, but to each his or her own!

Canadian way should be peaceful To the Editor: Liberating a Dutch hospital during the Second World War is my 90-yearold uncle’s pride. “Peace!” the Dutch shouted. Freedom from oppression at last!

Canada’s economy perpetuates the business of war for profit. Our Canada Pension Plan invests $675 million into the top international weapons manufacturers and trade. Cluster bomb components, depleted uranium bullets, tanks, $1 billion invested in armed drones and the infamous stealth fighter jets are profitable investments.

The consequences of war trauma are deprived acts of cruelty, suicide and mass insanity for generations. Hearts and minds are broken during the escalating horror for profit.

The power of greed is more addictive than heroine or cocaine — they who are the richest in our culture are deemed to be most successful and honoured.

Global climate change is an unacknowledged major consequence of fossil fuel wars, and wars require fossil fuels to power their profitable wars for fossil fuels!

Canadians have a choice to embrace the goodness of life by rejecting wars’ tragic profits by subsidizing alternative energy and local sustainable employment, or we can continue to fund the

Last penny ‘end of era for mankind’ To the Editor: The last penny went out on May 4.

Many people were sad, many people were happy. This is a part of the plot to desensitize people to the idea of eliminating all hard currency to bring in microchip implants. I mean, what’s a penny? It’s worthless. People throw them away to be rid of their weight.

The value of money has disappeared in a whirlwind of bailouts, quantitative easing and massive layoffs. Your pension: worthless. Your savings: worthless. Your paycheque: worthless. We are headed toward a tough winter, and there is very little food in the shed and very little money in the hands of many people because money is worthless.

What has gone on these past five years is bizarre, to say the least. Things don’t look so good for the next five, either. We are living in a time where

money has no value because you require so much of it just to live. The pennies are fewer and the cost of living is going up. Better hold on to your pennies!

Before fractional reserve banking, all hard currency’s value was based on the value of the metal it was printed on — copper, nickel, silver and gold. A country’s strength depended on its reserves.

Empires were forged. Inflation was natural. But fractional reserve banking and oil made hard currency obsolete. They could print as much money as they wanted based on nothing. We conquered the globe. But peak oil is here, and these minerals are getting very expensive to get out of the ground.

Good times for mining, bad times for the penny.

I was sad to see the penny go. It is the end of an era for mankind. Money is just numbers on a piece of paper now, which is such crap. It doesn’t matter how much money they print; they can’t fix the global economy. It’s spiralling out of control.

Peak oil does not care about fractional reserve banking. As demands outweigh supply, you will see more madness than leadership. True Democracy does, though. We can step aside from the madness and create a better society through direct democracy and green technologies, redesign our energy demand and rebuild our money supply as Andrew Jackson did and give the power of it back to the people, and eliminate the World Bank as it is and give the money back to the people to whom it truly belongs.

By the way, the last penny in Canadian history cost you $50,000.

Tory MPs need to use conscience

Wanted: Twenty-two angry MPs. I’ll tell you why in the following paragraphs.

You have surely read and heard the concern being expressed about the government’s failure to let Parliament see and discuss publicly the details of its proposed 31-year investment treaty with China. Governments aren’t legally bound to submit treaties to Parliament, but it has been customary for pacts as important as this to be opened to scrutiny before ratification.

Were you watching the CBC’s The National recently when the three “insight” panelists unanimously condemned the Harper government’s introduction of an “omnibus” budget bill — for the second time in two years — as “an affront to democracy”? They did so because these omnibus bills make it impossible for opposition MPs and the public to adequately assess and debate all the measures proposed in the massive documents before they go to the Senate for ratification, especially when, as happened last year, “closure” is used to limit the time allowed for Commons scrutiny.

These are but the latest in a string of actions taken by the Harper government which make me, too, anxious about the future of democracy in Canada and, indeed, about the well-being of its citizens.

Among others was the decision to limit the time allowed the National Energy Board to hear public submissions about the proposed pipeline for moving Athabasca oilsands crude to the Pacific Coast, not to mention the government’s evident lack of concern for the environment generally and about global warming in particular.

There were the steps taken to muzzle federal scientists who disagreed

with government policies affecting their spheres of expertise and to reduce funding for scientific activity in general.

There was the measure that made it more difficult to qualify for and get employment insurance.

The Voice of

Experience Peter Hepher There was the arbitrary removal of the Canadian Wheat Board’s historical monopoly on the marketing of wheat and barley without allowing the affected grain growers to vote on the move.

There was the killing (by ending its funding) of the National Council of Welfare, and similar action taken respecting other governmental or nonprofit agencies that had the temerity to take issue with governmental decisions.

And the list of measures taken to stop parliamentary and public scrutiny, and in some cases awareness, of the government’s intentions goes on. Given what has happened during the past two years, I shudder to think what might happen during the next three if Stephen Harper is allowed to go on running the country like a dictator.

That, I think, is not too strong a word to describe Harper’s approach to government. His excuse in many cases has been the need to provide jobs, but success on that front has so far been questionable.

Another argument the prime minister has advanced in defence of some measures, including reducing the size of the public service, is that the government needs to be more efficient.

Unfortunately, more governmental “efficiency” has often resulted in more inconvenience and sometimes actual hardship for ordinary Canadians, but that get us nearer to what I and others think really makes Harper tick.

That the man is a control freak is generally conceded. Add to that his belief that the less government the better and the suspicion that he has particularly hard-edged religious convictions and you see what I’m afraid of.

However, I’m not only afraid of what damage Harper’s approach to government might do if allowed to continue, I am dismayed that those who have the power to stop him have failed to do it.

A little math tells me that the government’s current majority in the House is a mere 21 MPs. I find it hard to believe that all of the 163 Conservatives are comfortable with Harper’s performance. Yet it would only take 22 of them to vote against an important piece of legislation — say, this new omnibus budget bill — to force Harper to either back down or call a general election. In fact, they need only abstain if all 142 opposition members were present and voting.

Are there really not 22 Tory MPs who, recognizing that they were elected to serve their constituents according to their own convictions, are ready to put those convictions, their reasoning and their consciences ahead of misguided and hazardous party loyalty?

Trucking careers needed and important to B.C. economy BLACK PRESS

Job seekers are in luck when it comes to the commercial road transportation industry in British Columbia. Trucking companies throughout B.C. require professional drivers, mechanics, dispatchers and operations staff right now, which means that job seekers with experience and/or training may find work within their preferred region. For those considering training prior to joining the workforce, demand for skilled workers in the industry is likely to grow — to 2020 and beyond.

There are a number of reasons for this. For truck drivers, the industry is facing a North America-wide shortage because most are 45 years of age or older and nearing retirement (in fact, in Canada, according to a report by the Canada Trucking Human Resources Council, 58 per cent of long-haul truck drivers fall in this age range). Similar shortages exist for other jobs, including diesel engine and heavy duty mechanics.

Aside from worker shortages, economic growth in the Asia-Pacific Gateway is also driving demand for workers in transportation. This applies not only to companies in the Lower Mainland, but in other regions as well, since the Asia-Pacific “gate-

way” is actually made up of an integrated supply chain of airports, seaports, rail and road connections, and border crossings, from Prince Rupert to Surrey, with links supplied by trucking.

Today’s trucking industry is an exciting place to be. Equipment in many companies is state of the art, meaning increased comfort and ease for drivers and opportunities for mechanics to work with technologically advanced systems, keeping both their skills and interest engaged.

Dispatch relies on sophisticated tracking and routing systems. Others on the operations side also use information technology of many kinds to deal with everything from licences and permits, to customer services, accounting, sales and marketing.

And, people joining the industry have many career choices. Drivers, for example, may work close to home as pick-up and delivery or short-haul drivers. Those who like the idea of travelling across Canada or North America can become long-haul drivers for an employer or work as owner-operators. Drivers may haul consumer goods, fuel, logs, heavy-duty equipment, livestock — most of what we purchase or consume spent some time on the road with a commercial truck!

If you already have experience as a driver, mechanic or operations worker, most companies advertise jobs on their websites. Members of the BC Trucking Association from across the province may post jobs under Careers on www.bctrucking. com, and the provincial and federal governments maintain job sites at WorkBC (www.workbc.ca/Jobs) and Working in Canada (www.workingincanada.gc.ca; choose to explore careers by occupation, then by region). Within your own community, it may also pay to approach a company you’d like to work for, drop off a résumé and inquire if and when they’ll be hiring.

If you’d like to enter the industry but need training, there are also many avenues to explore. Although there is not a standard training course for professional drivers, there are numerous private schools throughout B.C. that offer programs.

Toronto Consort returning to Creston AUDITIONS CRESTON CONCERT SOCIETY

The Creston Concert Society is pleased to present the return of the Toronto Consort, the internationally recognized ensemble known for their excellence in the performance of medieval, Renaissance and early baroque music, on Nov. 21.

Founded in 1972, the Toronto Consort is heard frequently on Canadian and international radio and television and has appeared with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, as well as the North German Radio Orchestra. Its many recordings include the Junonominated Full Well She Sang.

The group’s success can largely be attributed to artistic director, David Fallis, who, “rather than keeping these historical treasures shrouded in thick glass, [takes] them out for an energetic airing, carefully shaping and highlighting the music and its complex architecture.”

(Toronto Star) The group has received strong and positive reviews nationally and internationally from Glasgow, London, Vienna and Munich.

performances are “an ideal demonstration of how interesting, informative and entertaining an early music concert can be. The works presented were attractive, even to the non-initiate, and were performed with skill and precision. This was no stuffy academicism but rather a concert of worthy, quality music by performers who love what they do.”

ists on period instruments and voice, this delightful group, who brought Creston the wonderful show “The Da Vinci Codex” in 2010, will present “The Perfect Ambassador”, a story of Renaissance diplomacy in all its shades.

Bearers of lavish gifts, writers of secret dispatches, and keen observers of courtly life, Renaissance ambassadors were wonderful chroniclers of cultural achievements, local customs and dramatic events.

And often their accounts describe music-making of the period. (Indeed, a number of Renaissance musicians were known to be engaged in what today we would call “intelligence gathering.”) This fascinating program combines

words, music and images, creating an exploration into the intriguing world of 16th century diplomats and the musical riches they encountered.

This fully scripted show, which has toured with great success this over the past two years, includes music from Renaissance Spain, France and England, together with readings from the time, including excerpts from the writings of Machiavelli, Sir Thomas Bodley (founder of the Bodleian Library) and Francisco de Vitoria, considered by many as the father of international law.

Adults needed for roles in Annie FOOTLIGHTERS THEATRE SOCIETY

A second round of auditions for Footlighters Theatre Society’s spring musical, Annie (a co-production with Adam Robertson Elementary School), will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Snoring Sasquatch. This time, the production team will be looking for the show’s adult characters and chorus members of all ages.

“We held separate auditions for Annie and the other orphans,” said director Brian Lawrence. “We anticipated a lot of interest in those roles — and we were right. Sixteen girls tried out for the seven roles, and of those, eleven were asked to attend a callback audition later this week.”

On Sunday, Lawrence and music director Geri Buchanan — the pair previously staged The Music Man, The Sound of Music and last season’s nonmusical, Deathtrap — will be looking for three women and two men for principal roles, and about a dozen more (including at least five men) to fill out the chorus.

Besides Annie, the main characters are New York City Municipal Orphanage matron Miss Hannigan (who hates children but is fond of alcohol), billionaire Oliver Warbucks (who opens his home and heart to Annie), Grace Farrell (Warbucks’ faithful secretary), Rooster Hannigan (Miss Hannigan’s shyster younger brother) and Lily St. Regis (Rooster’s seemingly dimwitted girlfriend).

Vocally, Warbucks is the largest of those roles, singing solo or taking part in five numbers (including N.Y.C., You Won’t Be An Orphan For Long and Something Was Missing).

Grace takes part in five, while Hannigan sings two, including the solo showstopper, Little Girls.

Rooster and Lily sing one song, Easy Street, and its reprise.

The rest of Annie’s roles are designed to be played by a dozen chorus members, with simple costumes changes allowing them to transition from homeless Hooverveille-ites to Warbucks’ servants to New York residents in Act I and from NBC Radio personalities to Warbucks’ servants to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his staff in Act II. “The ensemble has a lot to do in this show,” said Lawrence. “Our last few musicals have been rather light on costume and character changes for the chorus, and I think this will be a nice change for anyone involved.”

Richard Rosenberger runs the Living Rock Cafe in the Christian Development Centre at 1607 Canyon St.

has a library — but the addition of the coffee shop offers many more.

“People pass through here all the time that need help,” he said. “My heart goes out to those on the street.”

Rosenberger came to Creston in the 1980s, and worked at a pizza place on 15th Avenue. He had no home, so the owner took him in without judgement.

“Christ was a way of life for her,” said Rosenberger. “She was always helping others.”

Her dedication led Rosenberger to change his life.

“I gave my life to God, basically as an

experiment, because I was ready to check out.”

He eventually started the 180 Club in 2003, offering youth a safe place to meet and socialize. After it closed a couple of years later, he went on mission trips to Guatemala before embarking on the creation of the Christian Development Centre.

The addition of the Living Rock Café offers more than just a place to chat; a full selection of coffee-based beverages is on the menu, from drip coffee to lattes to the quarter-pounder — a French-pressed quarterpound of coffee. Baked goods are available,

too, brought in from other local businesses.

Although the walls display Christian rock memorabilia and Christian pamphlets and brochures are readily available, Rosenberger stresses that being Christian isn’t a requirement to visit.

“I don’t care what walks through that door,” he said. “They’re all God’s creation.

I want them to know they’re God-blessed.”

And if spending some time at the café makes people feel better, that’s all Rosenberger really wants.

“We can believe whatever we want, but we’re all ready, we’re all trying to find something significant,” he said.

Friends of the Cinema presenting double feature of film and local art FRIENDS OF THE CINEMA

The long and the short of it is that Friends of the Cinema patrons are in for a very nice surprise next week.

The full-length feature, The Lady, will be preceded by a locally-made short (40 minutes) by a local video artist, Richard Reeves, featuring the paintings of another local artist, Alison Masters.

The short, Travel Posters at the Night Gallery, features 32 paintings based on sketches of scenes Masters passed through on a 2011 trek through Spain.

viewers are encouraged to chat while it is playing, much like they would discuss paintings while wandering through an art gallery.

“As I previewed this video, at first I wanted it to speed up,” said Creston Valley Advance publisher Lorne Eckersley. “Then, after about three paintings, I settled in and became completely entranced, ending up feeling like I was on the pilgrimage, too. When the video was over I felt like I had witnessed the birth of the Slow Art Movement. It is quite magical.”

Following a short intermission, Friends of the Cinema presents The

Lady, a biopic on the life of Aung San Suu Kyi, the most familiar face of Burma’s democracy movement. Suu Kyi, the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner, continues to be one of the world’s most admired citizens as her struggle continues.

The Lady is directed by acclaimed French filmmaker Luc Besson and stars Michelle Yeoh as Suu Kyi and David Thewlis. It is an English language film.

The double feature will run at Prince Charles Theatre at 7:30 p.m.

Nov. 19. Intermission snacks will be available by donation.

Creston music students playing Canadian music CRESTON VALLEY MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION The Creston Valley Music Teachers Association is proud to present a student recital in celebration of Canada Music Week.

The various students participating in the Nov. 18 recital have been working hard through the fall to prepare their pieces for the performance.

The teachers have encouraged their students to choose a piece from a Canadian composer. This is a great way for students to learn a bit about the Canadian history of music and a wonderful opportunity to share the Canadian music with the community. There is a lot to be said for Canadian composers and the students will show that, in spite of all the wonderful things that could be written about the composers, the music truly says it best.

The concert will include students from many of the CVMTA teachers, including piano, violin and voice students. There is no grade limit to the students participating, so the audience will hear everything from the simple and sweet beginner to the beautiful intricacies of the most developed student.

As an added bonus, and to finish off the recital with some good fun on the teachers’ part, a few of the music teachers will be performing an eight-handed piano piece, which was performed at the recent musical extravaganza put on by the teachers in the CVMTA. It was a pretty big hit with the audience then and is sure to please again.

The recital will be held at the Prince Charles Theatre at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 18. Refreshments will be available following the recital, and admission is by donation at the door, with tax receipts available for donations of $10 or more. All proceeds will go toward the Monte Anderson Music Scholarship, which is used to help students further their post-secondary musical education.

This will be a wonderful recital and a chance to show some pride in your country's music. You won't want to miss it!

Therapeutic riding program retiring three horses

THERAPEUTIC RIDING PROGRAM

The Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program has regretfully decided to retire three of its therapy horses. Blue, Inga and Salty are wonderful horses that have delighted so many people over the years. As they are healthy enough to live out more years, the program is currently looking for loving retirement homes.

Blue is about 24 years old. He is 16.1 hands high and a great big gentleman.

He’s been with the riding program since 2005. He’s made so many people happy, giving them confidence and great rides over the years. Blue has some arthritis in his legs and can still be ridden gently.

Blue is like a big puppy dog when roaming around the property. He’s Submitted always curious and loves to stay near his people.

MLA gets inside look at Ukraine election

It was 3:12 a.m., a full seven hours after the polls closed and the vote count began, when my Canadem partner and I received our official copy of VoliaYakubova polling station’s election

In Your Corner Michelle Mungall results, known as “the protocol” in Ukraine’s election system. As international election observers on Canada’s largest mission to date, we were observing the count and process of transferring results to official documents in this tiny village of 216 registered voters.

Most observers stick to urban centers, but our team decided that we would conclude election day at a village poll so that the rural story would be included into the final report. So there we were, huddled by the wood stove in the village hall/theater/mayor’s office/community centre/ polling station watching Ukraine’s election process unfold.

After receiving the protocol, I looked over at a young woman who was the local English teacher and said, “Democracy isn’t glamorous, but it sure is great.”

We were all exhausted. Most of us had already been awake for 24 hours and still had several hours to go before we could

get some rest. Five hours had just been spent handwriting out almost every word of 40 copies of protocols. The local women’s makeup was starting to smear, we all had bags under eyes, and the sleep deprivation caused for easy laughs to bad jokes.

Snapshots of momentous speeches, rallies and victory dances were far off. But there wasn’t a doubt in anyone’s mind that it was worth it.

And it is here where Ukraine’s journey for democracy has hope.

Outside of this village, there were many electoral problems that caused international bodies to summarize 2012 as a step backwards in Ukraine’s democracy. Documented cases of vote-buying, intimidation and financial corruption of the press, harassment and threats of opposition candidates, and the political imprisonment of opposition party leader Yulia Tymoshenko all contributed to pre-election attacks on the democratic process.

After the votes were counted, transfer of results was lengthy, problematic and secretive. Some reported violent clashes between police and opposition members.

Several ridings saw outright fraud.

While the presence of international observers do not cause the observed election to be free and fair, we do shed light on how the election is conducted so that the local people working for democracy have impartial and objective information about what needs to change.

This is happening right now in Ukraine.

In the days following E-day, protests erupted calling for recounts and investigations. As a result, five elections will be re-contested.

On E-day, I watched parents take children to the polls to show them how voting is done. I saw an elderly man with a cane in each hand labour over every step as he crossed a field and climbed the steps to the polling station. Blind, elderly grandmothers arrived guided by their children so that they could cast their ballots. My driver spent over three hours on the road

to cast his ballot. Each of these people knew the importance of the electoral process because much of their lives were spent without it. Nothing was going to stop them from voting.

Without a doubt, the seed for democracy is planted. The people will make it grow.

MP set to dine at TAPS

Today I had lunch with some ladies from the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) who prepare and share lunch before they head out to do their grocery shopping with our drivers. The topics ranged from the U.S. presidential election to the Krafty Kronys’ craft sale this weekend. These ladies are more mature seniors and all are bright, a w a re and involved. They are concerned about their friends, have opinions about politics and have suggestions for Terry Nowak improving many things.

While we were eating, Richard, the HandyDart bus driver came in. He is our hero! Richard and Bridget, the TAPS program manager, have managed to co-ordinate drives for seniors who live outside Creston to come to TAPS. Richard works for Creston Valley Transit, part of BC Transit. The expansion of transportation services by Creston Valley Transit makes it possible for persons who need a little help getting on and off a bus to have access to services outside their homes by taking advantage of the HandyDart.

Another service change offers options for those who find it hard to get to the fixedroute by arranging for by request service.

TAPS staff know that our seniors enjoy shopping for themselves and that it increases their independence. Hopefully, this enhanced service from BC Transit will give others the same opportunity.

Last month, we thanked the community greenhouse, now called the Know and Grow Farm, and Harvest Share for their continuous donations of produce to TAPS. We would like to thank the generous people at Lighthouse Lighting who also donate food products to us. We never know what might arrive next but we appreciate all of your donations.

Each month, our seniors host a lunch to thank those who have contributed to our program. November ’s guest is KootenayColumbia member of Parliament David Wilks, who will have lunch with TAPS seniors on Nov. 15. Programs like TAPS require a great deal of financial support and the government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors program has provided us with grants for programs and capital assets for several years. Our seniors will have the opportunity to let their MP know how the grants have been used and what the needs of seniors in our community are. Wilks will have the opportunity to see how well the Creston community supports its seniors and how many groups work together to the benefit of all.

Another busy week for TAPS! Terry Nowak is an outreach worker with Creston’s Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors.
