GRANS speak out for Third World Over 60 people in Campbell River came together at Spirit Square on the afternoon of November 1 at a rally organized by Campbell River’s Grandmothers’ Advocacy Network (GRAN).

The rally was part of a national campaign to urge Parliament to pass Bill C-398 to amend Canada’s Access to Medicines Regime (CAMR) to provide generic medicines to developing countries. Emcee Janet Lackey

opened the event with some sobering statistics: 22.9 million people in Sub Saharan Africa have HIV/ AIDS which includes 90% of the world’s child patients; African Grandmothers are raising two-thirds of

the children orphaned by AIDS; half the babies born with HIV do not survive to their second birthday; and, one third of those needing medication receive none, resulting in death. “But AIDS is not

Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com If you look around the streets of Campbell River and Courtenay this time of year, you see the many boats parked in West Coast Fishing driveways. To many anglers in the area the fishing season has ended. Most of the guides who worked in the summer have pulled their boats by November 1st and will launch again in the water by May 1st. There are a handful of professional guides that fish salt and freshwater during the winter. Weather permitting people start fishing for winter feeder Chinook salmon. This is a good time to go crabbing or prawning. For crabbing, Gowland Harbour and Menzies Bay are good spot. I will be at the Sport Fishing Institutes (S.F.I.) Open House at the Community Centre in Campbell River on Wednesday, November 14th from 7-9pm. This is an informal session open to all. The next meeting of S.F.I. will be in Port Hardy S Sunday, November 18th at Quatse River Hatchery beginning aat 1pm. Discussion in Campbell River and Port Hardy will include Chinook, Halibut, catch monitoring, certified nook Bob Turnbull with 32 lb. Chi guides and more.

FISH BITES A fly used in Washington State has moved into the Campbell River area. I call it the Ski Fly tied on a number 8 hook with a wool body, tied in peacock with 3 feathers wound in the front. Bill designed to reduce red tape and allow the export of generic drugs From Page 8 affordable, generic, life-saving drugs to developing nations . . . but sadly, in the eight years since CAMR was introduced, only ONE order of drugs has reached people in need of treatment,” she said. “This is because CAMR needs fixing and Bill C-398 has been designed to reduce the red tape and allow the export of generic, life-saving medicines to flow to developing countries.” Federal NDP representative RonnaRae Leonard told the crowd that her party supports the passage of this bill, but that it is not a partisan issue. “Helping people in developing countries is something most Canadians believe in. It is simply the right thing to do.” Campbell River’s Mayor Walter Jakeway stated that “nobody should ever underestimate the power of Grandmothers when they are determined to affect change.” Sally Gellard, a political activist and representative from

the Merville GRAN, spoke passionately about her own experiences in Africa. “AIDS/HIV does not have to be a death sentence, nor does it get passed on to others, either during birth or throughout the course of one’s life if medication is available,” Gellard said. She spoke about babies of infected mothers being born free of the HIV virus if the mother was taking medication. The speakers urged all citizens to contact their federal representatives and insist that they support the passage of this bill. To end the rally, Tina Filippino, Director of Letz Sing, choral groups in Campbell River and the Comox Valley, led the audience in songs. Everyone was encouraged to contact their North Island MP John Duncan at 250338-9381 to encourage him to support the passage of Bill C-398 which should be before the House of Commons by the end of November.

Participants sign petition to pass Bill C-398 that would allow the export of less expensive drug treatments. Photo by Karen Wasilenchuk

Being active for 150 minutes per week (just over 20 minutes per day) was associated with an increase in life expectancy of 3.5-4.5 years. Furthermore, the study found that being active and a normal weight resulted in a gain of over seven years of life compared to being inactive and

The study found that people who were normal weight, but inactive lived three years less than active people who were also normal weight. So what does this mean for you? It means it is never too late to start an exercise program. Even if you are not in the best shape of your life exercise can still help you to live longer. It will still help even if you don’t

Not only am I sleeping better, but I truly believe that the pain I feel during the day has been reduced. Thank you for making my life easier for a person who struggles daily.” Christina Coke PEACEFUL NIGHTS – NO MORE SNORES! “We purchased a Celliant Sleep Rejuvenation System and we love the bed, and had a great sleep every night since then. I wake up refreshed although I spent less time in bed. Nothing hurts or aches. My husband who used to say that I snore says I no longer do. This is truly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Thank you.” Klaire

B.C. jobs scene just keeps trucking on Job seekers are in luck when it comes to the commercial road transportation industry in British Columbia. Trucking companies throughout BC require professional drivers, mechanics, dispatchers and operations staff right now, which means that job seekers with experience and/or training may find work within their preferred region. For those considering training prior to joining the workforce, demand for skilled workers in the industry is likely to grow – to 2020 and beyond. There are a number of reasons for this. For truck drivers, the industry is facing a North America-wide shortage because most are 45 years of age or older and nearing retirement (in fact, in Canada, according to a report by the Canada

Trucking Human Resources Council, 58 percent of long-haul truck drivers fall in this age range). Similar shortages exist for other jobs, including diesel engine and heavy duty mechanics. Aside from worker shortages, economic growth in the AsiaPacific Gateway is also driving demand for workers in transportation. This applies not only to companies in the Lower Mainland, but in other regions as well, since the AsiaPacific “Gateway” is actually made up of an integrated supply chain of airports, seaports, rail and road connections, and border crossings, from Prince Rupert to Surrey, with links supplied by trucking. Today’s trucking industry is an exciting place to be.

One of the brightest spots in the B.C. job scene is the trucking industry. Trucking companies throughout B.C. require professional drivers, dispatchers and operations staff. Equipment in many companies is state

of the art, meaning increased comfort

and ease for drivers and opportunities for mechanics to work with technologically advanced systems, keeping both their skills and interest engaged. Dispatch relies on sophisticated tracking and routing systems. Others on the operations side also use information technology of many kinds to deal with everything from licences and permits, to customer services, accounting, sales and marketing. And, people joining the industry have many career choices. Drivers, for example, may work close to home as pickup and delivery or short-haul drivers. Those who like the idea of travelling across Canada or North America can become long-haul drivers for an employer or work as owner-operators.

7x7

SMALL BUSINESS

Drivers may haul consumer goods, fuel, logs, heavy-duty equipment, livestock – most of what we purchase or consume spent some time on the road with a commercial truck! If you already have experience as a driver, mechanic or operations worker, most companies advertise jobs on their websites. Members of the BC Trucking Association from across the province may post jobs under Careers onwww. bctrucking.com, and the provincial and federal governments maintain job sites at WorkBC (http:// www.workbc.ca/ Jobs/) and Working in Canada (http://www. workingincanada. gc.ca/ - choose to Explore Careers by Occupation, then by Region). Within your own

community, it may also pay to approach a company you’d like to work for, drop off a résumé and inquire if and when they’ll be hiring. If you’d like to enter the industry but need training, there are also many avenues to explore. Although there is not a standard training course for professional drivers, there are numerous private schools throughout BC that offer programs. For information on transportation trades in BC, including mechanics and other technicians, visit transCDA (http:// www.tcda.ca/home). And for information on trucking careers in general, seewww. truckingcareers.ca. Your own community and region depend on trucking. It may also offer the right career for you.

Focus on breast cancer prevention With statistics being 1 in 8 for women developing breast cancer in their lifetime, it seems that an ounce of prevention may be worth a pound of cure. “Thermography is a vital assessment for early detection and the best chance for preventative action against breast cancer says Glenda Neufeld, the owner and technician of Thermography Clinic Vancouver Island, who brings her high tech equipment to the Comox Valley on a regular basis. Medical Infrared Thermography uses an infrared camera

that is similar to military “heat seeking technology. It can see patterns of heat and blood activity that may reveal the earliest indications of disease while they are still in the formative stages. Thermography is non-invasive and radiation free. It’s safe for all women and men and is especially useful for those who have had inconclusive mammograms, have implants, have dense breasts, or are younger than the age recommended for mammography screening. Thermography is approved by the FDA and widely used in

Europe as an adjunct to other screening and diagnostic modalities like; mammogram, ultrasound, MRI, and biopsy. Here in BC, thermography is not covered by the province, so patients who take a proactive approach to their health pay for the scans themselves. “A picture can say a thousand words says Dr. Alexander Mostovoy, Director of Thermography Clinic Inc. (www.drmostovoy. com) who analyses the images that Neufeld sends him, “A thermographic image is like a thermal fingerprint and like a fingerprint, it should

stay relatively the same over time. Any changes may indicate the need for further investigation and it may give the incentive needed to make those lifestyle changes that can be lifesaving. The next mobile clinic dates in the Valley are at naturopathic physician Dr. Deidre Macdonald’s clinic, The Macdonald Center for Natural Medicine, on November 20th and 21st. Contact 250-9475424 to make an appointment or visit www.thermography vancouverisland.com for more information.

June Lunny Contributed

Courtenay’s mosaic has been situated on the corner of Fifth Street and Harmston Avenue for 50 years and is as vibrant today as it was then, a legacy of its creator, Rector Bill Lunny. In 1952, Bill was a post-grad student at Oriel College, Oxford. During his reading break, he decided to hitchhike to Ravenna, Italy, the City of Mosaics. Mosaic has an interesting history, which fascinated Bill. The first mosaic was found in the eighth century BC, in China, composed of carefully arranged pebbles paving a floor. Four hundred years later, artists used cubes cut from stone rods, making the task cheaper and the pieces

A mosaic of St. John identifies the Courtenay church that bears his name. Photo submitted easier to handle. The Romans took their designs to higher level, depicting stories of their gods and scenes from every day life. Such themes involved complicated shapes, and a variety of colours and textures, using coloured glass, precious and semi-precious stones and gold leaf. Pavements still predominated, but walls and ceilings too had mosaic decorations. Soon Italy became famous for its

mosaics and Ravenna became the City of Mosaics. Each day Bill wandered around the city, discovering hidden mosaics down dark arcades; masterpieces in the numerous churches; wayside fountains cascading over colourful scenes of fish, exotic animals or fields of magnificent flowers. Pavements seemed carpeted in brilliant tile. Enthralled at the spectacle, he made a

vow that one day he would create a mosaic in Canada. He returned to Oriel and completed his masters degree, then flew back to Vancouver. He spent another year at the Anglican Theological College and then Archbishop Sexton ordained him Deaconin-Charge of the five point parish of Lake Cowichan. He married June and enjoyed four wonderful years there. When the parish became selfsupporting, the Archbishop appointed him Rector of the parish of Sandwick, Courtenay. Full of enthusiasm, the parish flourished and soon the little brown church of St John the Divine was too small for its burgeoning congregation. Funds

ANSWER TO PUZZLE NO. 634

were raised and the building was doubled in size, stuccoed and painted white. Remembering his previous vow, Bill decided he would like a mosaic of John produced on the outside wall, facing Fifth Street. He asked Pat Embleton, Charley Forrest, and other local artists, if they would like to undertake such an endeavour. They agreed and set to work in the parish hall. First they drew the 13.5-xthree-foot-tall figure of St. John on a piece of plywood and covered it with brown paper. Then, painstakingly, each tile was cut, chipped and nibbled into place. The face alone required hours of work to form the eyes, nose and mouth. Gradually, the entire body was completed, down to his black shoes. Once the placing was correct, each tile was glued onto the paper. Finally, the day came to cement the mosaic onto the wall of the church. To make the figure easier to handle, it had to be cut into pieces not larger than 16 inches. The mosaic was very fragile at this stage and could only be handled in smaller pieces. Each piece was carefully carried outside to the wall, which had been prepared with a cement-based adhesive. A small, notched trowel ensured an even bed and the chunks of mosaic were pressed firmly into the cement. Once the cement was dry, a wet sponge was used to thoroughly moisten the brown paper and dissolve the glue. Then the paper was gently peeled off, revealing the mosaic. The final step was grouting between each tile and cleaning off the residue. In a short while, Courtenay’s mosaic was complete. June Lunny is the widow of Rector Bill Lunny.
