COMOX VALLEY RECORD • Wednesday, November 14, 2012 9

is gearing up for 6 weeks of winter fun and

You’re Invited! The 1st annual Downtown Courtenay WinterFest kicks off this weekend with a Moonlight and Magic spectacle and the entertainment and activities continue every weekend right through till Christmas. It’s a showcase of all that Downtown Courtenay has to offer and an invitation to residents and visitors to re-discover, explore and experience their downtown!

Why a Winter Celebration?

6 weekends with their own special personality!

Comox Valley summers are filled with festivals of all sorts - so why not the winter? Winter celebrations are popular across Canada and a great addition to the Christmas season. In the Comox Valley we’re blessed with amazing year round recreation opportunities. A downtown winter festival that focuses on food, culture, boutique shopping and community is a perfect complement to outdoor winter adventures. So this year downtown merchants and organizations are joining forces and launching an exciting new initiative to celebrate the people, places and ideas that make Courtenay such a special place. Everyone is welcome to come and fall in love with Downtown Courtenay this winter!

There is a little something for everyone at the Downtown Courtenay WinterFest and events will be presented by many different organizations, cultural groups and businesses. Visitors will discover activities ranging from art and craft shows, the Farmers Market and theatre events to performances by local choirs, musicians and dance troupes. Downtown will be host to a big Christmas Parade, Walk the Windows Contest, charity fundraisers, fiddlers, stilters, kids colouring contest, magicians, fire dancers and much much more. Local pubs and restaurants will be offering live music events, community groups will be presenting Christmas craft fairs and rumour has it there’s a plan to bring a little bit of Mount Washington right into the middle of downtown!

Moonlight and Magic kicks off WinterFest with a bang!

(Nov 16 and 17)

Join us for a big celebration of lights, sparkle, magic, fire and some of the best shopping specials of the year. From candles, lamps and crystals to kids magic kits, decorations and clothes with bling! - Downtown Courtenay has so much to choose from. Come see Downtown Courtenay by night on Friday November 16th when shops are open late, watch a breathtaking performance from Vesta Fire Entertainment at 6 pm and enjoy the sparkle and glitter of our beautiful downtown

Dreaming of a Green Christmas (November 23 - 25) is a focus on services, products

and activities that are good for the planet. Look for recycled and refurbished furnishings, healthy local foods, organic cottons and bamboos and earth friendly cleaners. Have fun finding unusual treasures and support important community organizations at local thrift stores. Consider gifts of services instead of stuff! Haircuts, pedicures, photography sessions and massages all make great gifts. Local choirs and dance troupes will take to the streets between 11 and 3.

Comox Valley Christmas Parade (Sunday, November 25 at 2pm on 5th St.) Delicious Downtown (Nov 30 and Dec 1) will be a tasty weekend with local restaurants,

cafes, butchers, bakers and sweet-makers showing off their delectable side with special menus and features. Downtown Courtenay is home to some pretty incredible food and the weekly Comox Valley Farmers Market is a perfect addition to the tasty mix every winter. Special cooking workshops will be offered to add culinary inspiration to the holidays. Downtown Courtenay WinterFest is also holding a Food Bank Drive on December 1st and accepting donations at the WinterFest Hub (at 5th and England) all day long, Come by with a donation and be entered in a draw to win gift certificates from local restaurants.

Walk on the Wild Side (Dec 7 and 8). Come downtown and explore your ‘wild side’ this

weekend. There are hidden treasures throughout downtown that will tickle your senses. From tattoos, piercing and romantic gifts to adventure sports, CD’s and books and unusual theatre, dance and music performances - there is great stuff to peak your interest and even raise your eyebrows. Check out the “Elevate Winter Bazaar” at the Courtenay Legion and uncover some pretty wild art and craft from the Comox Valley’s most creative creatures.

Winter Wonderland

(Dec 14 and 15th) is all about winter wishes, dreams and fantasies. It’s time to think about get cozy with loved ones, pulling on the fuzzy slippers, curling up with a good book and waiting for the snow to fall. Mount Washington Alpine Resort is coming downtown to share some cool prizes that will get you ‘up the mountain’ this winter and if the conditions are right - a little snow might come with them!

Twas the Night Before

(Dec 21 and 22) is when ‘old fashioned Christmas’ hits downtown. Look for local choirs and music schools who will be leading caroling and other music making. City sidewalks will be busy sidewalks as last minute shoppers hustle and bustle through downtown and friends and families meet for lunches, coffee or desert with loved ones.

Follow WinterFest on Facebook For complete details on each weekend’s programming you can become a fan of “Downtown Courtenay WinterFest” on facebook. We’ll be posting all the details on all performers and exact performance times and locations as well as other special events from a variety of downtown organizations. The WinterFest team is making sure we help spread the word about all the exciting activities that take place in Downtown Courtenay. Schedules will be updated right up to the event so be sure to check back regularly.

Our downtown areas are facing many challenges as the Valley grows and development patterns change. New shopping opportunities in large format stores mean serious competition for small businesses to deal with. But with all these changes come amazing opportunities. Downtown Courtenay, (and Comox and Cumberland) can build on their unique gifts and become a destination for both residents and tourists! Downtown Courtenay is about shopping, but it’s also about so much more. Its the cultural heart of the Comox Valley, filled with great heritage building, adjacent to some of the most amazing heritage houses in the Comox Valley (Old Orchard), alongside the Courtenay River and a place where friends and family meet for all kinds of occasions!

The shopping is amazing too. Downtown is a place where you can find the perfect things that can help to mark special transitions and rights of passage in our lives.

It’s where you find:

• quality gifts for babies and new moms, • chocolates for your sweetheart, • the perfect ‘first Christmas’ tree ornament, • a special piece of furniture for your new home, • a place to rent your first tuxedo • your first business suit.

These are things that are directly connected to how we celebrate our lives! If we treat our downtown areas as a place where commerce, culture and community come together - downtowns can and will flourish. Downtown Courtenay WinterFest is part of that celebration. It’s about inviting the community to come and discover their downtown and spend more time there celebrating the best things in life.
