Welcome to Beautiful You
A new publication aims to make Nanaimo women look and feel their very best
W
elcome to the inaugural publication of Beautiful You, a special supplement of the News Bulletin aimed at helping women look and feel their very best. With the Christmas season approaching, and the day-to-day demands on the time of mothers, professionals, students and all women, it’s important to take time to relax and rejuvenate to keep your energy and your spirits up. In the past, spending the day at the spa was reserved only for the wealthiest women in society. But now those relaxation and beauty services are available to all on almost any budget. Niomi Pearson talks to the people behind Tru Spa to reduce the mystery around spa treatments and prepare newcomers for an exciting experience.
Niomi also delves into the increasingly popular world of yoga and all its forms. The ancient physical and spiritual practice found new fans in North America and a wide variety of yoga disciplines exist in Nanaimo to suit any mobility needs. With so much focus on the economy and household budgets, it’s no wonder that women are opting for simple, easy to care for styles when it comes to their hair. But simple does not mean scruffy – Jenn McGarrigle talks to stylists about how to stay fashionable on a budget. And speaking of fashion ... Catwalk Fashions and KC’s Boutique let Jenn in on fall’s hottest looks, many of which are inspired by the popularity of the 1950s housewife (thanks Mad Men).
Our physical appearance can only do so much for our well-being – nutrition is paramount to good health. Rachel Stern looks into the popular raw food diet to see what it is, why people are opting for it and what qualified nutritionists think about this new food craze. Let us know what you think – drop us a note at editor@nanaimobulletin.com with what stories you’d like to see in future editions. ON THE COVER: Connie Cyr, co-owner of KC’s Boutique and Petites tries on one of the latest fall additions to the store’s clothing line. The store focuses on classic fashions from career to casual wear in petite to regular sizes.

hese days, a day at the spa can mean so much more than just a girls’ day out. With health and wellness benefits seeping out of every pore, today’s spa services not only rejuvenate the soul, but the body as well. “The spa is for everyone these days; it’s more catered to the person’s needs,” says Karen Murphy, owner of Pure Spa in Nanaimo. “A spa isn’t just for fluff, it’s also a place to come and get well.” The spa offers a wide variety
of treatments to the first-time and experienced spa-goer – everything from manicures, to pedicures, facials, body massage, body wraps, steam treatments and aesthetician services like waxing. “This industry is not about pampering yourself as much as it used to be, it’s becoming a need because everybody’s lives are so busy,” said Yolanda Delafranier, community relations and admissions for Nanaimo’s Tru Spa Institute. ◆ See ‘ARRIVE’ /5

Arrive early to allow time to settle in ◆ From /4 There is no set dress code for most spas, however you will want to arrive at least 10 minutes early to allow time to settle in. “That gives them a chance to get in, have a glass a water, take off their coat, fill out the form and for us to get to know them before we start the service,” Murphy said. Pedicure clients will want to wear opentoed shoes

and pants with enough give to roll up for massaging purposes. “We want to make sure your feet are taken care of because they hold you up all day long,” Murphy said. As an aesthetics school and spa rolled into one, Tru Spa Institute offers its clients a unique experience like no other. By providing services in a work environment, the students are able to make the transition to the workplace that much easier, Delafranier said. She added that the students spend extensive time practicing on friends, and other classmates, and are capable of providing equal, if not better service than other industry professionals “We want to make sure the students are giving a wonderful, relax-
ing, pampering opportunity to each client that comes in while learning, while understanding that their touch, their energy will go into the client,” Delafranier said. Places like Tru Spa Institute and Pure Spa, located in the Coast Bastion hotel, are offering residents a relaxing ambient spa experience at competitive prices. “They can still get the treatment of a spa, but it’s not going to hurt their pocket book,” Murphy said. “It’s something you wouldn’t do on a regular basis, you might do it once in a while to spoil yourself.” reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com NIOMI PEARSON/THE NEWS BULLETIN

he brilliant autumn colours in Nanaimo signal the start to the sweater and scarf season. But this year, it also means tall boots, tights, tunics and ’50s-era dresses, said Robin Tomlinson, owner of Catwalk Fashions downtown. “The thing that’s really big is that ’50s housewife look and I think it’s Mad Men that’s really brought that on,” she said. “It’s great on every woman.” Dresses are now down to the knee this year instead of the mini skirts of the past few years and cut to make the most of a woman’s curves, said Tomlinson. “We’re moving into a more dress-up kind of thing,” she said. “Nanaimo women are definitely more casual. I’m always trying to push them a little bit – why not look good every day? Why not look your best?” Orange, mustard yellow and turquoise are showing up in her store and so are animal prints of all
Nanaimo women are definitely more casual.
kinds, she said. Following the ’50s theme, the waist line of jeans is creeping back up to a woman’s belly button, skinny jeans are getting slightly wider and vintage-style hair pieces are also in big demand. Tomlinson said leggings like people wore in the ’80s are still popular, but now women pair them with a tunic and high boots – a statement that’s definitely a unique product of the current era. As for the 40-plus crowd, Karen Griffin, co-owner of KC’s Boutique in Longwood Station, said in Nanaimo, this age group also goes for casual wear: a common look is a nice pair of jeans worn with boots and a fancy top. “If they’re going to dress up at all here, they would wear a fancy top or a novelty top,” she said. “They would pair that with a basic pair of slacks or jeans with bling on them.” Griffin is seeing a lot of chocolate browns, teals, reds and other earth tones in her store this fall. Capes, as well as tunics, are in style this year, and novelty jackets that look good over jeans. “The fabrics now for fall – everything has stretch,” said Griffin. “It is all about comfort and versatility. People want style but comfort.” ◆ See ‘DRESS’ /7

Yoga helps keep body and mind limber BY NIOMI PEARSON If there is truth to the saying ‘you’re only as young as you feel’, then yoga could be your key to the fountain of youth. “Yoga is a way of understanding who we are, what our nature is, why we’re here, and how to stay in balance and stay healthy,” said Kavita Maharaj, owner of Red Door Yoga on Aulds Road. “It slows down your mind, and therefore slows down the aging process.” Although said to be approximately 5,000 years old, the roots of yoga are derived from Ayruvedic medicine and go back approximately 10,000 years to the Indus civilization, said Maharaj. In its holistic form, yoga takes
the entire energetic system and the mind into account, rather than the physically-based system we see in North America. “Yoga is a much larger system than what you see in North America,” Maharaj said. According to Ayruvedic medicine, the universe is made up of five elements; air, ether (space), fire, water and earth. Each individual possesses different combinations of these elements which make up their dosha. For example, air and ether create Vata, fire and water create Vitta, and water and earth create Kapha. Understanding these makeups can help us determine and correct imbalances in the body.
“The further away you move from that makeup, the more diseased you become,” Maharaj said. There are plenty of different types of yoga, such as classical Hatha, Vinyasa, Iyengar, Yin, and Kripalu yoga. Then there are yoga styles such as Bikram and Moksha, which may not be for everyone, Maharaj said. “They’re like McDonald’s. Wherever you go you get the same thing,” she said. “All yogas, ideally, should be based on the student in front of you, not a generalized ‘let’s put some poses together’, because not all sequences and postures are appropriate for all dosha make-ups and doshic imbalances.” ◆ See ‘VARIETY’ /9

of benefits that draw people to yoga, which is why more and more doctors are prescribing classes to their patients. The benefits include increased flexibility, decreased stress levels, and injury rehabilitation. “When we tend to think about beauty, we tend to describe it as being youthful and having a glow. You can see someone that has completely grey hair and yet they are beautiful because they exude that energy, that glow, Maharaj said. “That comes from the health of their mind, the health of their body, and the health of their spirit. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com
Yoga comes in multiple forms Classical Hatha – The basis of all yoga forms, Hatha gives you all possible poses and postures, each sseparated by a hold and p pause. V Vinyasa – A series of movvements executed at a more vigoorous pace, lending itself to more cardiovascular exercise. Iyyengar – A Hatha-based stylee of yoga developed by B.K.S. Iyenggar known for its use of props to asssist in executing postures. Props can include belts, blocks and blankets. Kriipalu – Also known as tion intation in motion, Kripalu is a medit
form of Hatha based on feeling flow of energy. It uses inner focus, meditation, standard yoga poses, breathwork and relaxation.
Bikram – A type of Hatha yoga performed in a series of 26 postures in a heated room. Moksha – A variation of hot yoga performed in a room heated to 40 C with 35-per cent humidity. Not recommended for those with high or low blood pressure or asthma. Yin – Rehabilitative yoga form which focuses on connective tissues rather than muscles and uses slower poses. Yin yoga emphasizes internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of muscles.

Simple and stylish describe hair trends Warm, reddish tones popular colours in the fall season BY JENN M C GARRIGLE
W
hen it comes to hair, Nanaimo women are opting for a variety of styles and shades that reflect the new season. Easy maintenance hair is the theme right now, said Megan Nuñez-Delgado, owner/stylist at Serenity Salon on Bowen Road. Women are going for colour jobs that don’t need to be touched up every four weeks, she said. For example, one hair colouring technique that is popular right now is balayage, where colour is painted on rather than using foils to give people a sun-kissed, natural look. Another look is colouring the ends of the hair but not the roots to create a two-toned look, called ombre. Women are asking for long layers that don’t require a lot of product or that don’t need to be styled every day, said Nuñez-Delgado, and the focus is on working with, rather than trying to change, a person’s natural texture. Warm tones are always popular in the fall, such as copper, red and mahogany and these warmer colours serve to shine up hair dried out from a summer in the sun, she said.
Simple seems to be the norm.
More and more people are also requesting more natural hair colouring products, such as ammonia-free products, she added. As for accessories, feathers that are clamped around a section of hair are big sellers, as well as hair chalk – nonpermanent colour that a person can apply themselves to get a new look for a night out – and extensions, both clip-in and bonded to the natural hair. “Extensions are always big,” said Nuñez-Delgado. Full-bodied hair is also popular – people are using texture products such as surf sprays to give their hair volume without too much work – and incorporating braids into hairstyles, she added. Local celebrity hairstylist Bryan Dubinsky said his clients are going for longer, simpler hair that is easy to maintain as well. “A lot of hair trends are dictated on where the economy is at,” he said. “Simple seems to be the norm.” The look is longer and simpler with bluntly cut ends – rather than feathered – that grow out gracefully so that people don’t have to go to the hairdresser as often, said Dubinsky. Colours are also going more natural, with perhaps the odd flash of bright colour, he added. For a bit of volume, women are going for soft curls, waves and subtle backcombing and clip-in extensions also add to this look, said Dubinsky. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Raw food diet packs nutrients and minerals BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
M
ore people are turning to raw diets to avoid preservatives and packaged foods. Diana Marchand, a personal trainer and raw food chef at Rawmbas, said many processed foods available are full of fillers and don’t offer the nutrients and minerals that people need. She added the further a person can get away from packaged food the healthier their diet can get. “When you eat food that has no nutrients in it your body is actually starving,” she said. Marchand turned to a raw food diet to recover from health problems and as a cleanse for her body. Prior to eating raw food she said her diet lacked many essential minerals and vitamins. She was only on a raw diet for a short time
because she wasn’t able to get all her dietary requirements by strictly sticking to a raw diet. “For me I couldn’t get enough calories,” said Marchand. “When you cook food you can have more of it.” Patricia Chuey, a dietitian and spokeswoman for the Dietitians of Canada, said in the long-term she doesn’t feel eating a purely raw food diet is the answer, and people shouldn’t eat raw meat, but that for short periods of time it could be helpful for people. Variety, moderation and balance are good approaches when choosing what to eat, said Chuey. “I’m a huge proponent of eating foods as close to a raw state as possible,” said Chuey. She said that some raw foods, depending where a person lives, could be harder to find or are more expensive. Some people also may have digestive problems and it may be difficult for them to break

down raw foods, especially as they age, and may have to slightly cook or steam them, she added. Many raw foodies cook vegetables and fruits in a dehydrator, keeping the temperature low. Marchand said she cooks some foods in a dehydrator or in a mini oven because they don’t lose as many nutrients. The longer you cook food the more essential nutritional components you lose, she said. Marchand said people don’t have to eat a purely raw food to be considered a raw foodie. She said her diet is about 75 per cent raw food and probably only about one per cent of people are 100 per cent, and usually they are vegan as well. Many people Marchand speaks to are turning to raw food diets because they have been told by their doctor or naturopath that they have food allergies to things such as wheat and dairy. “I think people are getting sick and
