3 Facts you need to Know About... BC Finance Minister’s Visit to East Kootenay

1. Minister Mike deJong provided a sold-out crowd in Cranbrook the same facts about the challenges and choices facing BC that he provided for cabinet just a few weeks ago. Spending choices are limited by the challenge of balancing the budget. Nonetheless, BC has more choices than most Canadian provinces.

2. The future for BC is unpredictable in an uncertain global economy and things are tight. But BC is doing better than almost anywhere else on earth. Ontario predicts a $22 Billion deficit while BC is on track to balance our budget. Even Alberta will have a deficit. 3. Business employers at the luncheon appreciated the minister’s factual, no nonsense approach to the management of tax payer money. Because business, just like households, must manage in the same responsible, disciplined way. False Alarm Bylaw

Established in 2008, this bylaw states that when police attend at a business premises to provide service in response to a false alarm of a security alarm system, the owner of the property on which the premises are located shall pay to the City of Cranbrook: $100 for the first offence; $150 for the second; $200 for each offence thereafter. This bylaw does not apply to residential properties. Visit our website and click on ‘Bylaws’ for more on all of our City bylaws.

Public Safety Responsibility of All This Winter

Improving the safety of the public is behind the City of Cranbrook campaign asking residents and businesses to help keep your streets and sidewalks clear of snow and ice this winter. “Regularly clearing ice and snow from your sidewalks and driveways will allow much easier access to your property by the fire department, RCMP or paramedics should an accident or other emergencies happen.” says Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services Chief Wayne Price. Residents are also encouraged to avoid pushing or blowing snow from their sidewalks, driveways and any windrows back into the street, after the City plows have been by. Clearing snow is not just the responsibility of the City Public Works department, which does the best they can with the resources available to keep the community moving during the winter months. Responsibility also lies with each resident and business owner to help clear around their home or business. “During and following major snowfalls, our snow removal operation runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and operates with a small fleet of vehicles; four salt/sand trucks with belly plows, two graders and two loaders.” says Public Works Director Joe McGowan. “With this schedule and the equipment we have, it is reasonable to expect most areas of the City to be cleared within 3 or 4 days of a snowfall, depending on the amount of snow and how fast it comes down.”

City of Cranbrook Snow Removal Policy

As this winter season approaches, we want to remind you of the City of Cranbrook current Snow and Ice Control procedures to better understand why the City clears snow the way it does. The policy in place clearly identifies four levels of priorities for streets for City crews to follow: STREETS Classification “A” – FIRST PRIORITY Major streets, hospital zones, roads that access emergency service facilities, roads with severe grades and transit routes will be cleared first. Tembec fire investigation wraps Submitted

The investigation by Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services into last Thursday night’s fire at the Tembec planer mill wrapped up Friday afternoon. Investigators

indicate that the cause is undetermined and deem the fire as not suspicious in nature. The Tembec planer mill facility has been closed and unused for several months. Neither the kiln nor the finger joint plant on the

property was involved in the fire. The property has now been turned back over to Tembec. The company will be working to secure the site and begin clean up. There were no injuries and no damage es-

timate is available. The planer mill facility was completely destroyed. At approximately 9:55 p.m. on Thursday November 1, Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services were called to a fire at the Tembec planer mill, located just off Theatre Road in Cranbrook. In all 18 fire fighters, two engines and the ladder truck responded to the call and found the facility engulfed. Responders created a perimeter and began actioning the blaze. Fire crews were also able to successfully move and save several pieces of heavy equipment away from the site. Fire crews remained on scene throughout the night watching for flair ups and dousing hot spots.

Columbia River Treaty workshop in Jaffray Submitted Residents will have another chance to talk to the Province about the future of the Columbia River Treaty in November. The Columbia River Treaty (CRT) Local Governments’ Committee encourages Basin residents to attend the consultation workshop in Jaffray on Wednesday, November 14. Using Home Equity to Your Advantage Canadians purchase homes for a variety of reasons. Some want the stability of owning their own home, while others also look at home ownership as an investment vehicle. No matter what the reason, the truth is that home ownership has proven itself to be a good stable investment over time, and one which many Canadians are profiting from. While many people have chosen to purchase their first home during these times of lower interest rates, there has also been a large movement to refinance home loans and pull out equity for home improvements, investments, college expenses, and even high interest debt consolidation. Canadians have been borrowing against their home’s equity in record numbers, taking out billions of dollars in cash each year. In years past, many saw their homes as a shelter of safety, yet today, they are more than ever before willing to borrow against the equity owned in their homes to further their investment portfolios, get out of debt, send their children to university, make improvements to their home, or even boost their RRSP contributions. Where home equity was once sat upon, today it is something to be tapped out and used to one’s advantage. While tapping the equity in your home can be a good idea, you should do so with caution and understand any of the possible consequences. The best thing you can do is consult a licensed mortgage professional and financial planner to discuss opportunities to make your home’s equity work for you.

Fire departments’ show raises equipment funds Home Hardware and Canadian Tire in Windermere were a beehive of activity recently as the seven fire departments in the Columbia Valley gathered for the first Trucks and Tools Fire Department Showcase. “The event was fantastic, says Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Service Deputy Chief, Martin Caldwell. “It was quite a sight to see all the trucks and firefighters in one location, and this was evident by the number of drivers who slowed down or turned around to see what all the commotion was about. Crews from the Fairmont Hot Springs, Windermere, Invermere, Panorama, Radium Hot Springs, Canal Flats and Edgewater Fire Departments split the fleet

between Home Hardware and Canadian Tire to showcase their tools, recruit new members, and raise money for Radium Fire Department’s Medical Equipment fund. “Local Volunteer Firefighters served up hot dogs, brats, and beverages and thanks to the generous support of the public, we sold out by 2 p.m., added Caldwell. At the end of the afternoon, over $800 was raised for the Fund. The event was part of the fall recruiting drive and throughout the day, new candidate names were collected and application packages handed out. Department members also had the opportunity to share their stories and experiences. “We would like to extend a huge thanks to the owners and staff

Kootenay ICE trades for size and experience, bringing roster to 23

Photos submitted

Centre Austin Vetterl (left) and Forward Zach McPhee round out the Kootenay ICE roster at 23. Submitted Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, recently announced the Club has acquired two new players, the first being 18-year-old Forward Austin Vetterl from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for 1995 born prospects Kyle Krabben (Defenseman) and Douglas Morris (Forward). “With our injuries and the departure of our

captain, our line up is very depleted heading in to the three games this weekend. Austin will bring much needed experience to a roster that is currently the youngest in the WHL. We are hoping for him to play significant minutes in all key situations,” added Chynoweth. Austin Vetterl was born on February 2, 1994 in Surrey, BC. This 5’11”, 180 pound centre shoots righthanded.

The club has also traded for 19-year-old Forward Zach McPhee from the Everett Silvertips in exchange for a conditional seventh round draft pick in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. “With our need to add bodies to our roster we felt Zach would be a great fit. He is a veteran player who will bring size and versatility to our line up with his ability to play both centre and right wing,” added Chynoweth. Zach McPhee was born on March 5, 1993 in Vernon, BC. He is 6’4”, 200 pounds and shoots right. As a result of the transaction, the ICE have 23 players on their roster,

including two goalies, seven defensemen and 14 forwards. Of those players, there are two 1992 born players, four 1993 born players, seven 1994 born players, eight 1995 born players and two 1996 born players. The next home action for the ICE will be on Saturday, November 10 as they host the Moose Jaw Warriors at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Kootenay ICE Office or by calling 250417-0322.

Family, friendship the story behind upcoming ‘Steel Magnolias’

Photo Darcy Wiebe

The cast of Cranbrook Community Theatre’s “Steel Magnolias” is excited to bring this much loved story to area audiences.(From left) Elizabeth Ross, Joanne Wilkinson, Kirsten Kasner (back), Michelle McCue (front), Hannah Van der Roest, and Susan Hanson. Submitted The tight bonds of friendship and family are featured in Cranbrook Community Theatre’s production of “Steel Magnolias”. Directed by Bob McCue, “Steel Magnolias” follows Truvy (Susan Hanson) who runs a beauty parlour out of her house. One of her valued clients, M’Lynn

(Michelle McCue) has a daughter (Kirsten Kasner) who suffers through the trials and tribulations of being a newly married diabetic. Throw in a couple of old biddies, Clairee (Elizabeth Ross) and Ouiser (Joanne Wilkinson) for comic effect and add in a poor innocent young hairdresser (Hannah Van der Roest) who doesn’t know what to make of

all of this. “Steel Magnolias is a great play with a widespread following. It has great emotional impact and this project gave me an opportunity to work with six of the finest actresses in the area,” said McCue. “The relationship between the actresses is very special. They’ll make you laugh and they’ll make you cry -bring Kleen-

ex!” “Steel Magnolias” opens on Friday, November 16th at the Studio/Stage Door and McCue hinted there may be a “Bleeding Armadillo Cake” at the opening night reception. Alison Brown achieved an international reputation as a banjo player by pushing the instrument out of its familiar Appalachian settings and into new musical territory. On her newest record, however, Brown brings her banjo back to its bluegrass roots and to her own musical beginnings. Brown has achieved success in many areas over the years. She assembled the material for her solo debut, Simple Pleasures, earning her a Grammy nomination. Around the same time, Brown joined Krauss for a successful three-year run that included a place on Krauss’ Grammywinning “I’ve Got That Old Feeling” album, as well as bluegrass music’s highest accolade for an instrumentalist:

This Sunday is Remembrance Day - veterans and Legion members will be joined by members of the community at the cenotaph to commemorate those who have given their lives to ensure freedom and peace for all. For many of us, our thoughts also turn to other family members and friends who have passed on over time. One way of creating a long-lasting tribute as well as a place for the survivors to remember and to heal is to plant a memorial garden. This can be as small as a simple planter or a single perennial or tree and as big as an oversized flower bed or even a separate area of the garden. When selecting plants for the memorial garden, consider the individual you are honouring. Did that person have a favourite plant or colour? A rose garden might be appropriate or a perennial bed with all hues of red. Is there a scent or a flower that evokes fond memories of that person for you? If you remember Nana’s lilac hedge growing up, why not plant a bush in her honour? You can also select plants that symbolize specific meanings. Forget-me-nots stand for memories and rosemary talks of remembrance while yellow tulips speak of never ending friendship and pink carnations say “I will never forget you!”. If you are commemorating a veteran, incorporating poppies into the display might be a good idea. The poppy is a symbol for eternal sleep and has been distributed in Canada as a symbol of remembrance for soldiers who died in battle. The scarlet red poppy became a lasting memorial when Canadian army surgeon John McCrae penned his poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ during World War I. Scarlet corn poppies grow naturally in conditions of disturbed earth throughout Western Europe. When conflicts and wars turned the ground on battlefields and cemeteries where war casualties were buried, poppies made the barren fields explode with their blood-red flowers. Where you locate your garden will depend on where you have adequate space or it might be a spot with special meaning for you and your loved one.It is important that you keep in mind the requirements of the site you selected for your memorial garden. So choose the right plants to fit the soil, light and other growing conditions. Pink peonies might fit well into your colour scheme, but as full-sun loving plants they will not do well in a shady spot. Planting a memorial garden comes from the heart and the most important rule is that you do what is most meaningful for you. While you do not have to be concerned if this particular garden fits all the rules of design, you might want to keep some of the guidelines in mind. One of them is the rule of proportions - placing taller plants in the back while keeping shorter ones toward the front. Depending on the size of your memorial garden, you should also think about including appropriate statuaries and decorations. If your loved one was a bird lover, why not add a birdbath to attract songbirds to the space? You can have a bench to invite people to stay and reflect. A water feature will add a soothing ambiance. Or place a pet memorial stone to commemorate an animal companion that is no longer with you. Even if you do not have a yard to create a memorial garden, you can still have plants be part of a tribute to your loved one. A planter with that special person’s favourite annuals on your porch or balcony can be a great memorial. You can also check with your municipality to see if you can plant a tree in a loved one’s memory in a park or special location around the community. Till next time... lest we forget. In Memoriam

Remembering our wonderful husband, dad & Opa Wilhelm Ridke God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So he closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace by Thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home. We remember how deeply you loved us all. We miss you so very much, each and every day and love you more than words can say. We look forward to the day our chain will be whole once more... Your loving wife, Lydia, children Gabriele, Erda (Gerry), Klause (June), Rosemarie and all your grandchildren and great grandchildren.

OBITUARY Lorraine Marie Hockley September 17, 1941-November 2, 2012 Have you ever seen an Angel? I saw one just today! She was playing with the children. She sang, and laughed, and prayed. Suddenly she was called home, We hoped she'd stay forever. Still we know that someday soon, We all will be together. Our beloved Mother, sister, friend, Grandmother and Angel, passed peacefully onto her heavenly home. She was on one of her many yearly trips to visit her most cherished treasures, her children and grandchildren. She spent her last days where she most loved to be, engulfed in the chaos of busy family life. Lorraine was predeceased by her parents Clara and Stanley Schwartzenberger of Coaldale, AB, and husband Wilf Hockley of Fernie, BC. She leaves to cherish her memory, sister Donna (Darrel) Schneider, brother Daryl (Jan) Schwartzenberger; children, Dave (Mary) Conrad, Debbie (Laird) Hawke, Barb (Lyle) Willicome, Byron (Heidi) Conrad, Judy (John) Rea, Carol, Heather (Keith) and Patricia (Rod) Hockley; 30 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives and friends. OBITUARY

HALKO: It is with tremendous heartache that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Robert John Halko on Monday October 29, 2012. Robert was born on June 9, 1964 in Michel BC at the old Michel hospital. A lifelong resident of the Elk Valley, Robert entered Kindergarten at the old Michel School in 1969, continuing his elementary school years at the F.J. Mitchell Elementary School and graduating from Sparwood Secondary in 1982. In the Fall of 1982 Robert attended the University of Lethbridge, transferring in 1984 to the University of Alberta where he graduated in 1987 with a B.Sc. in Agriculture. A while later Robert returned to the University of Calgary, graduating with a B.Sc. in Geography. Robert’s ultimate love and passion was fishing and hunting. Whether he was catching Pickerel or Walleye in the lakes of central Alberta, or hunting big game in the Elk Valley, Robert thoroughly enjoyed his time outdoors; sharing his knowledge with his younger brothers and his nephew and niece. Robert had extensive knowledge of the Elk Valley and surrounding areas; mostly due to experience shared with him from his father Thomas. Robert’s work career followed his great love for wildlife, nature and the environment. He worked for years as a Wildlife Consultant, working on projects involving everything from fish to grizzly bears. Robert was a loyal son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend; he thoroughly enjoyed spending quality time with relatives and friends. Robert was quick with a joke and his witty sarcastic sense of humor kept everyone laughing. He was also a favorite amongst all children and they clung to him, most likely because he was like a big kid himself! Robert is survived by his parents Thomas & Marianne, his brothers David (Leanna) and Stephen (Julie) and one sister, Stephanie (Brad) with her two children, JohnThomas & Morgan Owen as well as their father Bleddyn Owen. Robert’s family extends to his uncles and aunts: John “Yunch” (Marjorie) Halko, Robert “Joe” (Julie) Craig, and Lindsay (Cyndi) Fleming as well other extended family members too numerous to mention. Robert also leaves behind his faithful dog Madison who was always by his side; she was "his Baby". Robert was preceded in death by his fraternal grandparents John & Susan Halko, by his maternal grandmother "Baba" Martha Fleming, his uncle Georgie Berg, and by his cousins Jimmy Craig and Brian Halko. Robert was an Inspiration to us all and he will be deeply missed. Rest In Peace Herb .... Until we meet again. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.cherishedmemoriesfs.com Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.
