Every Nov. 11, Peter Anderosov and James Peterson don their medal laden blue blazers and berets and attend the Remembrance Day service in Port Alberni.

As the Last Post sounds, Anderosov and Peterson stand in their shined shoes, poppies affixed to their jacket lapels and remember those who fell during wartime.

A closer look at the pair reveals something different from other veterans, and their black rimmed berets with white tops give it away. The distinctive colours denote service with the merchant navy.

Anderosov, 85, and Peterson, 84, served as merchant navymen during the Second World War. The merchant navy ferried food, supplies, ammunition and troops across oceans around Europe and the South Pacific.

The merchant navy served in the same arenas of war as military personnel. According to Veterans Affairs Canada, one in seven merchant navymen died — the highest casualty rate of any of the armed services.

Anderosov was born in Grand Forks, B.C. and was one of six children born to Doukhobor

parents. He never went to school, something that was forbidden by Doukhobors.

Bored, restless, and tired of discrimination, Anderosov left the farm at age 12 and headed for Vancouver.

With the help of a friend he got work as a mess punk and utility boy aboard a tramp steamer and with 52 other crew members set sail for England.

It was the end of 1938 and the beginning of the Second World

War. Anderosov travelled in convoys that ranged in size from 20 to 140 ships. The ships were escorted by naval battleships and by fighter aircraft but only to a point. The planes had to turn back before running out of fuel, leaving the lightly armed commercial fleet in waters teeming with German submarines waiting to hunt them.

Attacks on merchant convoys

were common and they were devastating. According to researcher Robert Fisher, 58 merchant navy ships were sunk by enemy attacks — 31 in 1942 alone. Of the 12,000 men who served in the merchant navy during the war, 1,629 were killed; 1,059 of them went down with their ships.

When Anderosov was 16, his ship was returning to Canada from Murmansk, Russia where it had unloaded its cargo, and was travelling back empty.

Anderosov’s shift was just ending at 7:30 a.m. and he was emerging from a tunnel when he heard a loud explosion and felt a big shake.

“I knew we were hit by a torpedo,” he said.

Anderosov and other crew members scrambled to lifeboats on deck. But the ship went down so fast that no sooner had they loosened the lifeboat then they were floating. Of 52 crewmen, only seven survived.

The crew drifted at sea for five days. Anderosov never gave up hope of a rescue but some men did. On the third night Anderosov said he fell asleep during his turn at watch. When he awoke, he discovered that one of the men had thrown himself overboard during the night.

“I don’t talk about it much and I try to forget about it. But I do think about it from time to

time,” he said.

The crew was rescued by a British ship and brought back to Canada after five days. “I felt alive when that ship came. I felt so alive,” he said.

Anderosov made one more trip and was in Australia when the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, bringing the war to an end.

He met his wife Marion and married her in 1947. The two moved to Port Alberni where they had six children.

Anderosov worked at Somass Mill for 39 years before retiring in 1987.

He attends Remembrance Day ceremonies every year and pays his respects at the merchant navy monument at Harbour Quay. “I only take out my uniform on Remembrance Day,” he said.

“I think about the guys who never came home.”

While Peterson also served with the merchant navy, his story is different than Anderosov’s. Peterson left school after Grade 6 in Victoria and worked at the waterfront.

His first inkling of war was when he and his friends threw rocks at a captured German ship that was brought to port.

Peterson, 15, was striking out on his own and carving out a different identity from his three siblings.

Merchant navy veterans ferried supplies to help the war effort during the Second World War. But their greatest battle came at home where for more than four decades, they were denied benefits and recognition afforded to other veterans.

According to Veterans Affairs Canada, the federal government conscripted all

merchant ships two weeks before the war actually began.

The ships were responsible for transporting critical supplies to sustain the war effort.

Members of other branches of the military enlisted in the armed service. Merchant seamen however were considered civilians and not veterans. The government also sold the ships to shipping businesses after the war, but crews never went with them.

couldn’t access education and retraining programs to adjust to civilian life, and were denied preferential civil service hiring. Instead, they were only offered programs restricted to their careers as seamen.

“We served in the same war zones and put our lives on the line as much as anyone,” Alberni veteran James Peterson said. “We were just kids so at first we didn’t understand. But when we got older we understood that we

were discriminated against.”

The Merchant Navy Veterans Association fought for benefits and recognition, and in 1992 its veterans were granted the right to receive disability pensions and health-care benefits.

“Being recognized, it makes you feel like you didn’t do it for nothing,” Peterson said.

And in another gesture of recognition, merchant navymen were issued Queen’s Jubilee Medals this year.

only entity to deny merchant navymen recognition as veterans. The Royal Canadian Legion shared a similar view, something Peter Anderosov learned first hand.

“I tried to join three times after the war but was turned down every time,” he said.

A legion official told Anderosov that he was a draft dodger for being in the merchant navy when he last tried to join the legion.

boarding a bus to excitedly read brochures about our destination, we instead had to find the rental car counter where we doled out $500 in car rental and insurance costs.

We had hoped to pay a nominal bus or shuttle fee. Instead, we dipped into our spending money, just to be able to get

to where we had intended to spend that money.

We then got lost coming out of the Comox airport and ended up driving around the Comox Valley for longer than we intended.

There were no signs indicating where to go and adding that to the lack of applicable maps, again, it was like Port Alberni did not even exist.

Finally, a friendly Comox resident pointed us in the right direction, but not before trying to tempt us to stay longer in Comox.

What more could a family of five visiting the Alberni Valley for the first time ask for?

How about some indication that our destination even existed?

It was lucky for Port Alberni that we knew that we had to go there, because otherwise, we might never have found it. We were sorely disappointed when looking at the dozens of brochures on display at the Comox Valley Airport where we landed. None of the brochures provided information about Port Alberni or the Alberni Valley.

Our hope that we could find some sort of green option for transit, a bus, or even a shuttle van, to carry us into the Alberni Valley was also dashed. This was a big surprise to this tourist, given the area’s focus on

“I was 12 years old and not even old enough to be drafted when I joined,” he said.

“We had old men and other guys who had one arm, one eye and even a guy with no legs. They couldn’t be drafted but we did our duty and served as proudly as anyone.”

Memories bittersweet ‘Merchant’ from / 3 His father was in the navy, so Peterson joined the merchant navy at age 15 after lying about his age.

“I was a rogue and an outcast. I wanted to be different,” he said. “Besides, it was the only thing I could get into. I couldn’t get into any of the other services.”

Peterson first served on the Empress of Scotland, where he worked as a bridge boy. His work took him to England, New

Zealand, Australia and China. “I served in really cold and really hot weather,” he said.

Peterson remembers travelling in a convoy off the coast of Ireland when an attack came. “We heard an explosion and could see smoke.

We didn’t know if it was a mine or sub or even what ship it hit,” he said.

“We couldn’t stop and look or help. Our orders were to always keep going and never

to stop.”

On another occasion, a German spotter plane discovered Peterson’s ship, which hightailed it out to sea before a submarine could triangulate its position.

Peterson’s last trip was to Chin Wa Tao, China near the North Korean border.

When he returned to Vancouver he was sitting on the stairs at the post office watching as people were going crazy.

“The war just ended,” Peterson said.

After the war, Peterson worked for the post office, dock yards, and aboard a tug that cleared Japanese mines that drifted into West Coast waters.

He settled in Victoria with his wife and three children and worked as a longshoreman until retiring 20 years ago.

He and his wife moved to Port Alberni, which was a frequent summer destination for the family in earlier years.

“A lot of people have no idea about our story. I’m glad I do it,” he said.

The RCMP have taken the lead in investigating the fire that gutted the former Tidebrook Hotel on Gertrude Street, Saturday night.

The building was

without power or gas, therefore the cause wasn’t likely mechanical.

Instead, investigators are leaning towards a human cause, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said.

“The investigation is active and ongoing but we haven’t

Prime Minister Harper plans to move Canada one giant step closer to becoming a resource colony for foreign investors. The Harper government has discarded many critical Canadian voices and agreed to one of the most controversial and binding trade agreements ever - and one you’ve likely never heard of. And so far, your MP, Dr. James Lunney, has gone along with this plan.

other Canadian laws or regulations and lodge a dispute with a secret tribunal that will decide these cases. Canada will have no recourse to its own courts and legislatures. And worst of all, this incredibly bad deal will put us in a straightjacket for 31 years. One thing is for sure, though: it’s a really good deal for foreign investors, including China’s state-owned oil companies.

What does this mean in practical terms? If PM Harper approves Enbridge’s Northern Gateway Pipeline and the government of British Columbia decides to impose new restrictions to protect the BC Coast from oil spills or to reject the project, investors could sue under the treaty. If Quebec decides to

put restrictions on shale gas fracking, foreign investors could object and demand hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation. Canadians will no longer have final say over what happens on our land.

This dangerous trade deal has been sprung on Canadians without a public dialogue, without consent from the provinces whose jurisdictions it impacts, and without a robust debate or vote in Parliament.

Abandoned buildings a safety hazard — chief

From/ 7 Witnesses on the night of the fire reported seeing people in and out of the building and even taking shelter in the basement at night. No injuries or fatalities were reported, Port Alberni Fire Chief Tim Pley said.

The fire broke out sometime before 9 p.m. and was still fully engulfed at 10:30 p.m. Crews from Port Alberni, Beaver Creek and Sproat Lake fire departments battled the blaze.

No talk on trade treaty The real smart meter manipulation Virtually every MLA’s office in B.C. was targeted by protesters at the end of October, as opposition to the Northern Gateway pipeline intensifies.

The level of opposition to the pipeline project continues to mount. Opposition crosses almost all divides, be they political, age, gender or geographic.

While it seems unlikely that Northern Gateway will proceed, given not just the massive opposition but also an almost complete lack of support from First Nations, who legally have enormous clout over projects such as these, there is no lack of people willing to step up to the plate and object. Unfortunately, they seem to be ignoring another looming policy decision that may have even more of an effect on B.C. resource projects.

The federal government has ratified a Canada-China investment treaty, which came into effect Nov. 1. While the treaty grants some additional rights to Canadian companies doing business in China, it also grants sweeping additional authority to Chinese companies in Canada.

Details of this treaty were not debated in the House of Commons and didn’t have to be. Opposition is now mounting It would be nice to know what actual powers this treaty will grant China and Chinese companies in Canada. If Northern Gateway were turned down, for example, and it was proposed by a Chinese company, what kind of recourse would it have? The agreement may be very benign and not have the negative impact that some people are suggesting.

The trouble is, no one really knows.

Citizens need to know how this treaty will affect the ability of Canadian governments to make decisions affecting those resources.

ICTORIA – Two very different scenes unfolded at opposite ends of the province last week.

In the remote northwest corner of B.C., the first power line towers started going up to connect Highway 37 communities to the BC Hydro grid. The Nisga’a, Tahltan and other aboriginal communities will soon have reliable power, as well as muchneeded training and jobs during clearing and construction.

Meanwhile down on the Gulf Islands, the most hysterical, dishonest campaign against smart meters I’ve heard of so far went into high gear.

I’ve obtained a mass e-mail from the head antismart meter organizer on Salt Spring Island that shows the mentality at work here. (Corix is the BC Hydro contractor that has installed more than

a million meters and has approached the Gulf Islands, the last area of B.C. to be done.)

“Corix is attacking with 30 trucks on Mon the 22nd,” Chris Anderson wrote in October. “Poelpe [sic] are advised NOT to attend the Victoria pipeline rally but instead help defend agianst [sic] spymeter installations in their neighbourhoods.”

Anderson’s self-appointed supporters fanned – Chris out across the island, attempting to turn away installers on the false assumption that everyone has fallen for their crackpot fear campaign. They managed to stop 12 per cent of the installations.

Coincidentally, Anderson has been doing a brisk business selling $35 meter locks to gullible Salt Spring Islanders in recent months. They don’t work, and you’re not allowed to lock BC Hydro property anyway. Others

have been sold officiallooking “no smart meter” signs that don’t identify the customer, so they don’t work either.

As for the term “spymeter,” I’ve reported on the weird theories spread by Bill Vander Zalm in a video interview, where he claims smart meters are part of a global surveillance system that can even tell what you’re cooking.

Vander Zalm has been outdone by Anderson one Brian Thiesen, who styles himself as the “chairman” of “Interior Smart Meter Awareness.”

In September, the Merritt Herald reported on Thiesen’s presentation to 20 unwary people in a church basement. He claimed wireless meters not only provide video surveillance of your house, they are also responsible for “dying bees” and “defective sperm and eggs” as well as disease and fires.

Thiesen even claimed radiofrequency signals can “pull your PIN number directly out of your head.” Is there no limit to the nonsense some people will fall for?

Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis co-authored a study that shows residential fires have decreased with the advent of smart meters. Which brings me to the ugliest opposition to this modernization, the criminal element.

Here in North America’s marijuana mecca, installers have encountered many meter bypasses, wired up to steal hydro and conceal high consumption for grow ops. In addition to being illegal, they are a fire hazard that is removed when discovered.

Installers also find more sophisticated cases of hydro theft. Removing the mechanical meter reveals a hole cut in the back of the case, so the dials can be turned back to hide a grow op’s power consumption. No wonder some people want to lock them down.

Pot growers angry about smart meters From/ 12 Of course all of this is defeated by a smart grid system, so the growers and other crooks are angry.

A BC Hydro official told me about one case where a user was told he had a bypass, and that it was being removed.

His bill went from next to nothing to a

reasonable level.

The customer complained to the media, falsely inflating the amount of his bill and blaming an inaccurate smart meter.

Mailbag: Feedback on govt. cutbacks, a storm and Chinese trade.

Budget cuts hurt veterans To the Editor, Last summer, in Kelowna, a 92-yearold veteran walked into a Service Canada office to apply for war veteran allowance.

Leaning on his walker, he waited for 40 minutes before he could talk to an agent.

The Service Canada agent told him that he could not help him and that it was impossible to speak directly to a Veterans Affairs employee. The only way to file his request was online using a computer terminal.

The old soldier did not know how to use a computer. He drove all the way back home and got on the phone to have his application processed by the department.

We don’t know what happened after that.

What we do know is why it happened: the federal government decided to close down VAC’s district offices and replace them by Service Canada offices which distribute general information about the government, but cannot provide the specialized information veterans need.

I am the national

president of the Union of Veterans’ Affairs Employees.

Our union is supportive of Veterans Affairs Canada’s efforts to improve services to veterans.

Unfortunately these efforts are rendered useless by the recent federal budget cuts.

This department has been forced to reduce its workforce by 25 per cent, almost 1,000 jobs by the end of 2015.

The average case load for a Client Service Agent (CSA) is currently at 800 files. After the cuts, it will be more than 1,400 files.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Veterans Affairs minister Steven Blaney pretend that quality of services will improve.

This is simply absurd.

Veterans are the heroes of the nation.

They deserve our utmost respect, lest we forget.

A bad storm is just that To the Editor, Like millions of others, I was glued to CNN last week as

Hurricane Sandy slowly made her fateful journey up the Eastern Seaboard.

Even climate change deniers must have been startled out of their cosy little caves when the monstrous storm eventually slammed into the Jersey Shore, New York City and other states.

My mind kept flashing back to a weekend in August 1969 when I was chief mate on a bulk carrier fully laden with grain en route from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Cristobal, Panama.

Hurricane Camille was in the Gulf of Mexico as we were coming down the Mississippi; we cleared the rivermouth, and anchored along with a whole fleet of other vessels.

There was simply no place to run and no place to hide.

All possible preparations were made to secure the vessel, and by the time the Category Five Camille blew over us to make landfall just a few miles to the east, we had both anchor cables paid out to the bitter end, clinging onto the thick delta mud.

Even with engines going full ahead at the height of the

storm those anchors dragged, and we actually bounced along the side of a larger American freighter also at anchor.

I really believed at that time that it was game over, but quite amazingly we cleared the Lykes Lines vessel without any really significant damage, and our anchors held.

Watching Sandy last week I thought about the recent protests against tankers that we have seen in B.C. Do the protesters, the professional media pundits and amateur scribblers who fill columns and letters pages with hyperbolic doom and gloom about the inevitability of a disaster, have any idea what ships’ crews routinely go through to protect the environment?

A seaman might say that many of those who make the most noise couldn’t pour saltwater out of a sea boot, even with instructions printed on the heel.

FIPA fallout is frightening To the Editor, Why should Canada discriminate against

its own businesses and communities in favor of a China free trade agreement?

Why should Canadian taxpayers have to pay foreign companies if their “economic expectations” were thwarted by our health, safety and environmental laws?

Under NAFTA Canadian taxpayers, paid millions of dollars in damages to a US PCB disposal firm that claimed a lost profit when the export of PCB contaminated waste was banned.

In 2011 Canada paid $130 million to US based Abitibi Bowater Corporation as compensation for contested water and timber rights over the legal objections of the Province of Newfoundland.

If the Northern Gateway pipeline is built it is expected that China’s oil companies will purchase the entire operation.

With the passage of the China-Canada FTA, local, provincial and what’s left of federal environmental laws would just be swept aside in favor of “economic expectations”.

Bulldogs talk recycling in Valley schools The Alberni Valley Bulldogs have teamed up with the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District to promote local recycling programs. The Bulldogs will help encourage residents and businesses to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Bulldogs captain Ryan Lough and teammates Lars Hepso, Tryg Strand, and Manny Gialedakis will be participating in the program. They will be discussing the “three Rs” during their Bulldogs in Schools program and will be

initiating a number of 3Rs campaigns within the community.

“The Bulldogs bring to the program many great qualities,” says Andy Daniel, the regional district’s manager of environmental services.

“They are

“We will reach out to 25 different elementary school classrooms and talk to kids about what they do within their class and their home to make a difference.”

Health co-op’s future on the line The Pacific Rim Health Services Co-operative will hold its 2012 annual general meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room (downstairs) of Abbeyfield House.

In early 2012, the co-op ceased operation of the Alberni Family Medical Clinic on Gertrude Street.

The building was returned to its owner, the City of Port Alberni and since then the co-op has been dormant.

The major business for discussion will

be the future of the co-operative. Two alternatives will be presented: 1. To continue to look for a new project for the co-op to undertake, or 2. To dissolve the co-op and return share value to its members.

All co-op members are urged to attend and participate in this decision.

Groups benefit from fish cash Five volunteer salmon stewardship groups in the Port Alberni area received grants from the Pacific Salmon Foundation this year.

The Alberni Valley Enhancement Association received $5,700 to improve conditions for growing fish.

The association also received $24,150 to return a natural river channel by the Mclean Mill Dam to its original course.

Alberni Valley Salmon Enhancement Society received

$5,150 to purchase maintenance materials for their fish counting area.

The second project was granted $4,900 to rehabilitate two urban streams that run through Port Alberni And School District 70 (Alberni) received $ 1,500 to facilitate student visits to Robertson Creek Hatchery and provide transportation for the Gently Down the Creek Program.

Additional funds were raised at a special fundraising dinner on Nov. 3.

Smalltown Bringdown goes live A conversation between two small town boys that started 20 years ago is going to be celebrated with even more talking.

Longtime friends Branden Grieder and Elliot Drew often pass the time discussing, arguing and debating the goings on of the world.

Last year they started doing something a little different, they invited a microphone to the party and shared the conversation with the world on iTunes as the podcast Small Town Bringdown.

“It started really simple with an iPhone and a couple of beers”,says Grieder, host and creator of Lunchbox Fabrications, the podcasts parent company.

“We were talking anyway this just kinda formalized it and forced us to try and make each other laugh”

Now, a year later, the podcast is based in a fully equipped studio and is gaining momentum and listeners from all over the world.

“We have regular listeners in Japan, Australia and a lot from the eastern US but Canada is still our biggest supporter,” Drew said.“It’s pretty cool that people tune

in each week to share a couple laughs with us and really cool that people find our point of view interesting.”

Both hosts agree: Small Town Bringdown is all about, looking at things from the down to earth small town point of view, but be cautioned this show is for mature audiences only.

“We talk about everything and we don’t hold back,” Grieder said.

“Sometimes we’re serious, sometimes we’re funny but we are often explicit.”

A one year anniversary is rare for a podcast so the pair decided to make this one a special treat for them and their listeners by recording the show live in front

of an audience.

They have asked local musician Lance LaPointe, who also performs the show’s theme song, to join them. They also plan to screen a short movie that Grieder has been working on for the past few months.

“This is a celebration but also the kick off for a lot of other things we have been working on over the past year,” he said. “We hope that people come out join us and share some of that Port Alberni spirit with our listeners.”

World craft bazaar returns The World Craft Bazaar celebrates it’s tenth year in Port Alberni this weekend.

The event is on Saturday Nov. 10 at Echo Centre from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The popular craft fair brings fairly traded items from many third world countries.

Many of the vendors who come to Port Alberni also attend similar events in Campbell River, Parksville and Courtenay where the idea for such a craft fair on the Island

originated over 20 years ago.

B.C. youth can get a head start on career with trades VICTORIA - Youth can get a head start on a career while still in high school SPECIAL with one FEATURE of the trade apprenticeship paths for youth. An apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job training and classroom learning, providing the opportunity to start in the workforce and get a paycheque while you learn a trade.

The Industry Training Authority (ITA) Youth Programs allows youth to start apprenticeship training and earn high school credits at the same time. This is a great way to save time and money and there is no need to quit high school to get a head start on a solid career that pays well.

In partnership with the Ministry of Education and secondary schools, ITA delivers two youth programs—Accelerated

Credit Enrolment in Industry Training (ACEIT), and Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA).

Participation in ITA’s youth programs has increased from 861 participants in 2004 to 4,200 as of September 2012.

Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training (ACE-IT) • High school students can attend a trades training class, usually at a college.

• There are no tuitions fees and you receive course credits towards high school graduation.

• Participants get the first year of postsecondary training free, and may be eligible for a $1,000 scholarship.

• Sign up for both SSA and ACE-IT and after graduation you’re well on your way to achieving credit for the first year of your apprenticeship.

Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) • Start an

Port Alberni golfer Christina Proteau has capped a successful season with the prestigious Pacific Northwest Golf Association midamateur player of the year title. And she found out about it on Twitter.

The PNGA candidates are nominated by various state and provincial golf associations that comprise the PNGA, including Alaska, Alberta, B.C., Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

“I found out on a Twitter feed from the B.C. Golf association,” Proteau said. “I’ve only been on Twitter for about a month. I thought ‘hey, there’s a Twitter feed about me: I won an award!’”

She received the formal e-mail from the PNGA the following day.

This is the first year that the PNGA has included a mid-am (25 and over) category in its player of the year awards.

“I was super excited,” Proteau said. “It’s nice to be recognized because you do put in a lot

Hockey League, where both are top players for the Bulldogs, currently sitting fourth in the BCHL’s Island Division.

Tironese, 17, a forward, was selected to play on Canada West in the Jr. A challenge. Pellah, a blueliner, will play in the 2012 CJHL Prospect Games on Nov. 10–11 in Digby and Yarmouth.

Tironese cracked the Bulldogs’ lineup last year at 16 years old, and his game has steadily improved this season, head coach Kevin Willison said.

Pellah only joined the team last week in a three-player deal that saw Turner Popoff and Evan Anderson traded to the Langley Rivermen in exchange for Pellah.

Last year was a special season for Proteau, who played in the US Women’s Open and also attended qualifying school for the LPGA. She continued her strong play in 2012 with a 17-stroke victory at the Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship in Lethbridge, Alta. She also placed 22nd at the Canadian Amateur championship that same weekend, and was runner-up at the B.C. women’s midamateur.

When she made it to the top 16, Proteau played against defending champion Ellen Port of St. Louis, Mo., and won before losing in the next round.

Placing in the

quarter-finals means Proteau is eligible to attend the U.S. mid-am next year without having to qualify.

“They’re like the Jackie Littles from the United States,” Proteau said of the 2012 Senior Women’s B.C. champion, who is also from Port Alberni.

Proteau worked on the mental aspect of her game this year, and feels this was one of her strongest seasons yet.

“I’m going to be 30 in January and I can still compete against gals that are 17, 18. I have strengths I can use over them.” editor@albernivalleynews.com

Both players were scouted when they were 16; Tironese is

leading team scoring, and Pellah is one of the top six BCHL players on the Central Scouting draft roster.

“For us to have them both on our team, we’re thrilled,” Willison said.

Coach’s Comment Nanaimo Clippers @ Alberni Valley Bulldogs Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 7:00pm This is the 4th meeting between Nanaimo and Alberni Valley this season, with the Bulldogs leading the season series 2 games to 1 and have outscored the Clippers 12-9 in those three games. At the time of the publication deadline, the Bulldogs still lead the BCHL with most goals for with 64. The Alberni Valley Bulldogs power play continues to be 3rd best in the league at 21.50% and Nanaimo’s PP on the season sits last in the league with 11.69%. Look to Clippers’ Greg Fraser, Kyle Kramer, and Reid Sturos to lead the way for the Clipppers. The three 92-born forwards have been finding their game as of late. Sturos is third on the team with 15 points but leads the Clippers in power play goals (2), short handed goals (2), and game winning goals (4). The Bulldogs will have both Evan Tironese and Bo Pellah in the line up after they participated in the CJHL World Junior A Challenge and CJHL Prospect Games festivities in Nova Scotia. Evan Tironese and Ryan Lough lead the team in points (21 and 20 respectively) but have also seen defenseman Eric Walker put up 3 points in his first four games as a Bulldog. The Bulldogs will be a very fun team to watch as everyone becomes healthy and returns from their injuries.

am shooting using film cameras…yes film cameras. One camera is the Nikon SLR F90x, the latest in modern technology before digital. The F90 has full automatic focus as well as all the other goodies. The camera is sporting a Tamron AF LD 28–200mm f3.5 / 5.6.

The F90 is loaded with 400 ASA colour film.

fully manual Nikon, the FM2. The FM2 has a 28mm f2.8 lens on it and is using 200 ASA colour negative film.

I bring the film in to one of the two places that still develop colour film and have the films developed into negatives only— no prints—and not cut, so that I have a strip of 24 negatives.

When I get back to the workplace I cut the negatives into strips of six and feed them into my computer.

The results are astounding. The definition is sharper in the film, making the subject threedimensional.

The range of colours in the same hue is subtler, and more detail in the dark

areas gives the image more detail in the shadows.

The photo of the rose accompanying this column was taken while walking in the neighbourhood. I shot it on the Nikon f90x handheld, using the macro part of the Tamron zoom lens. I was on 200mm, aperture f5.6 @1/400-second speed and had the camera loaded with 800 ASA colour film.

There are a few reasons as to why I am shooting film: the first is because I wanted to see the difference or even if there was a difference between digital and film. The second reason is because I have a ton of film and a ton of film cameras.

The third reason is that there will not be a way that future generations would be able to see this digital era. We are storing our photographic treasures in a cloud or burning them onto DVDs, or backing them up on a hard drive. A cloud can be hacked, DVDs are being discontinued, hard drives are changing format right now.

The annual Daffodil Luncheon held at the Alberni Valley United Church with proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society was again a huge success. ‘Clearly, nature is the biggest tourist attraction’ highway and we were on our way.

Though it was hard for a newcomer to find, we were immediately enraptured upon entering the Alberni Valley. The natural beauty was like that in a fairy tale.

We knew from our research that some of the trees we were seeing were at least 1,000 years old in some cases and that some of the lakes

Or was the Alberni Valley some mythical land that only the truly favoured could actually find?

Could it be that Port Alberni and the surrounding valley take for granted that they will get tourism dollars by virtue of their location?

That was certainly one explanation for the lack of effort we experienced while in

the area.

It felt like a missed opportunity.

Getting tourists to the area is certainly a common goal of many municipalities.

Convincing them to stay a while and spend some money is the linchpin, though.

Otherwise, all that one is doing is directing traffic.

We ended on a high note with a trip on the Frances Barkley and once again remarked that as we pulled away from Port Alberni, the real reason for us being there was omnipresent.

Clearly, nature is the biggest tourist attraction of the valley, and our family was left wanting more after a few days in Port Alberni.

Film’s not obsolete – yet From / B12 The only legacy that I could leave to be interpreted in the future will always be negatives or positives.

Yes, I am shooting film again and loving it. Of course I do have to bring the roll of film in and scan the negs later but hey, that is all part of the

experience.

Using the FM2 is reality itself.

Everything is manual: the focus, the meter, the f-stops, the shutter speeds, the re-winding and advancing of the film.

It now takes me twice as long to take the photo but that is all fine and dandy.

I look at the subject differently; what attracted me to the subject, and so on.

My next step will be to take out the Hasselblad, shoot in black and white, develop the negatives myself and scan the negs into the computer to be printed as giclée or otherwise.
