FALL 2012

While many people look to the New Year for a little motivation to get more fit, the truth is, every day is a good day to be more active. And, if the holidays tend to be a hectic time of over-indulging, then striving to get a little more active beforehand might be the perfect answer to that seasonal guilt. Sure, fitness isn’t always easy, but find the right fit and you’ll be feeling the benefits in no time. “Getting into a fitness routine can be a bit intimidating,” says personal trainer Heather Rock, “however, the long-term benefit will be worth the initial discomfort. “My advice is to make it as easy as possible to add fitness into your day. The easier it is to incorporate into your routine, the more likely you are to make it a habit. Get moving on your lunch break or go to a gym that’s on your way to or from work. Pick an

activity that you enjoy and try to get your friends involved so you can encourage each other!” Of course, “typical” fitness regimens like running or aerobics aren’t for everyone, and that’s perfectly OK. “I think that enjoying what you do for fitness is really important and consistency is key,” Rock notes. “There are so many options out there, like trying a new sport, taking a dance class or yoga.” For those with the motivation to get fit at home, there are programs that can get you started with minimal equipment, although Rock suggests a session with a trainer can ensure you’re on track with the right exercises and form. “Personally, I am a fan of strength training and I think that having a trainer show you how to properly use weights is a really Continued on page 5

Continued from page 4 good investment. Most people who are reluctant to start lifting weights find that they enjoy it once they feel more competent,” she says. Those who have pursued a particular activity for some time can reach a plateau where they’re not seeing the same progress as they were. How do you push past the plateau? “Mix it up!” Rock says. “Try incorporating interval training or plyometrics, heavy lifting or yoga into your routine. You might also look at your diet – can you eliminate junk food for a week or add in an extra serving of veggies? “Sometimes when I am feeling a bit unmotivated I go back to the basics and focus on hydration and sleep so that I can put my full effort into my workouts,” she notes. “Lastly, you could be overtraining. Make sure you are giving your body at least one day off a week to recover.”

HEATHER’S

TOP THREE TIPS FOR STICKING WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE

1. Make it part of your routine – pick a gym/

hiking trail/yoga studio that you pass on your way to and from work or that’s near your house.

2. Work out with a friend 3. Don’t give up – results take time and consistency is key!

FALL 2012

Thank a spa day is only for women? Think again! Though women still take advantage of all the services spas have to offer, more often they’re being joined by men when they do. Not only do spas offer a luxurious way to for men to unwind, but they also offer specialized treatments geared to men’s specialized needs. At Bear Mountain’s Sante Spa, for example, men can revitalize with a Sports Facial, customized to address facial skin issues such as dryness, irritation and razor burn. The spa at the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe invites male clients to put their best foot forward with a re-energizing Sports Pedicure or sit back and relax while their professionals give their hands that executive appeal with a “Man-i-cure for men. Just a few of the many opportunities for men in Victoria to feel refreshed and rejuvenated! Facials exfoliate the skin and provide a deep cleanse to reinvigorate skin that might need a boost. A male facial can reduce unsightly and often uncomfortable shaving bumps while producing a far smoother shave the next time. Eyebrow treatment: Many men do not tend to their eyebrows, creating a bushy batch of hair above each eye; many spas will wax or tweeze a man’s eyebrows so they appear trim. Manicures may once have been considered solely for women, but today more men have embraced not only their aesthetic benefits, but how good a manicure feels. Pedicures may include a calf and foot massage as rough spots on the feet are rubbed down and soothed

away, in addition to exfoliation of the lower legs, heels, arches, toes, foot pads and even the tops of his feet. Men who work on their feet may enjoy a pedicure more than any other spa service. Microdermabrasion employs tiny crystals to exfoliate a man’s skin, removing fine lines and scars from previous skin problems, including acne. Men who routinely receive microdermabrasion treatment can expect their skin’s appearance to continue improving, as the procedure promotes the growth of collage and elastin.

“Beauty is having the courage to accept your faults. – Carrie Rees, manager of SORA Spa at the Hotel Grand Pacific

Massage therapy:

the basics

Whether it’s tension after a long work day or the lingering discomfort from an injury, many people suffer unnecessarily with symptoms and conditions that could be helped by massage therapy. To learn more about this specialized field, we turned to Kasey Thompson, Registered Massage Therapist with Victoria Massage Therapy and Health Solutions. “Far too often I’ve met people who’ve suffered with symptoms for years on end and done nothing about it,” Thompson says. “When they realize the many benefits of things like massage therapy, acupuncture, osteopathy, physiotherapy, naturopathic medicine, etc., they are often astounded at themselves for not taking action sooner. It’s important to make time for yourself.” Beautiful You: What is massage therapy? Kasey Thompson, RMT: Massage therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues, primarily muscle and fascia, to improve function and to promote relaxation. In a spa you may receive massage from a body worker or a registered massage therapist. The main differences between the two

are the level of training and education, as well as professional designation and regulation. RMTs are trained in orthopaedic/ therapeutic massage, sport, pregnancy and relaxation massage and as such have the comprehensive skill-set to combine multiple techniques for optimal results. RMTs can work with other professionals in the patient’s health care team in a coordinated treatment plan. Being designated under the Health Professions Act also allows cost of treatment to be covered by many extended health plans and in some cases, the Medical Services Plan. BY: What are the benefits? KT: Massage therapy is beneficial for the treatment of many conditions, such as muscle pain and tension, headaches, tendonitis, whiplash, sciatica and stress, to name a few. There are both short and long-term benefits to consider. Sometimes people use massage for treatment of acute pain from a specific injury, like a lower back spasm after bending and lifting a heavy object. Massage can provide some immediate

relief in one or more treatments, depending on the case. Long-term benefit comes after assessing the patient’s posture and health history, when we often discover that they have a postural imbalance that may have lead to the acute injury. They may have been suffering with symptoms on and off for years. Based on our findings we can recommend a treatment plan to address the underlying cause of the pain. Our goal is long-lasting results, which usually require some lifestyle changes like stretching or strengthening exercises to counteract the results of sitting at a desk all day, for example. Preventive care is also a big part of what RMTs do – identifying postural and lifestyle imbalances early and taking steps to address them now is a lot easier than fixing the problem after an injury. BY: Who is massage therapy appropriate for? Anyone who isn’t a good candidate? KT: With the right therapist, anyone can benefit from massage therapy. Registered Massage Therapists are highly trained in determining the appropriateness of using specific techniques and when to modify or refuse treatment for the patient’s safety. For example, massage can be very beneficial for patients with Multiple Sclerosis but the application of heat can cause extreme fatigue and increase symptoms for the patient. Any hot hydrotherapy, which RMTs use often, would be omitted for this patient. An RMT is trained to know when it’s not safe for you to receive treatment and when modifications to treatment are necessary. BY: Are there special designations or accreditations people should look for? KT: Each province has different regulations for RMTs and here in B.C. we have the highest standards of training in North

America. The RMT program includes indepth training in anatomy, physiology, neurology, pathology, orthopaedic assessment, postural assessment, professional development, therapeutic exercise prescription and treatment techniques like myofascial release, trigger point therapy, muscle energy technique, deep tissue Swedish and more. The three-year program of study also includes 500 hours of practical clinical experience. To use the designation “Registered Massage Therapist” you must complete this program with a passing grade of no less than 70 per cent, then write a board-certified exam and pass a practical examination of your assessment and treatment skills. All RMTs are governed by the College of Massage Therapists of BC and are insured and associated with the Massage Therapists Association of BC. BY: What can people expect from a massage therapy session? KT: At Victoria Massage Therapy and Health Solutions, the first massage appointment includes review of your health history, necessary postural and orthopaedic assessment and determining treatment goals. We strive to be thorough with our assessment and still get patients on the table and in treatment as fast as possible. We explain how to get on the table (between the sheets) and leave the room, allowing the patient to disrobe to a level that is comfortable. Treatment is then provided and followed with demonstration of any homecare exercises or lifestyle modifications the RMT feels would benefit the patient’s condition. A treatment plan is then discussed, determining what would fit the patient’s treatment goals, lifestyle and budget. Being a multidisciplinary clinic, we also determine if any other therapies would be appropriate either as a complementary addition to massage or as an alternative treatment method.

NEW and PRACTICE PERFECT ‘SPA ETIQUETTE’ When it comes to practicing perfect etiquette during a spa visit, the first key is to actually to put yourself first...which in turns benefits those around you. “Take time for yourself! Turn off the cellphone, put down the iPad, stop answering the emails and just take in the experience, says Carrie Rees, from SORA Spa at the Hotel Grand Pacific. Secondly, be on time, or even 10 to 15 minutes early, allowing you to settle in, fill out any forms you might need to complete without feeling rushed, and fully discuss your treatment and needs with your spa practitioner or massage therapist. Even better, arriving a few minutes before your appointment gives you time to relax before your treatment and enjoy all the amenities the spa has to offer.

FOR AN IDEAL SPA DAY Have you been to the spa lately? You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised at what you’ll find! “Globally, there has been a revived interest in balance and well-being and the spa industry is a key player in this revival, says Carrie Rees, from SORA at the Hotel Grand Pacific. “The grooming our grandmothers experienced at their beauty salons has come back in full force, however, this time transcending surface beauty. Clients are not only visiting the spa to maintain youthful radiance, but also to achieve balance and mindfulness, pairing yoga classes with spa

treatments and lunch with the girls. As clients look to a spa day for relaxation and rejuvenation as much as aesthetics, it’s no surprise that the most soughtafter treatments include massage as well as facials and pedicures, Rees says, suggesting these treatments are seen not only as luxuries but also monthly experiences that can help them maintain a healthful lifestyle. Within these common treatments have come special elements that play into the current trends, such as the OPI Gel Polish, offering women the latest colours, in a polish that lasts two weeks or more. “We’ve also seen a surge in nail designs, Rees says. “Women are coming for custom manicures, looking for something special, unique and beautiful. As silly as it may sound to some, looking down at a perfectly manicured hand with a little pop of extra sparkle does add something special. Many of these new features are in direct response to needs and wishes expressed by clients. “Our offerings have definitely been influenced by the needs of our clients, Carrie says, pointing to the gel polish as a prime example, in addition to new treatments addressing clients’ desire for firm, radiant skin. These “are perfect for those clients looking for immediate results and tremendous relaxation. With a greater interest in wellness, people are taking more time for themselves. “A visit to the spa is a time to be mindful, quiet, and to have someone else look after your experience and your well-being. In this way, people let go of control and the stresses of everyday life to enjoy the moment, to enjoy the peace.

fall

With cooler temperatures begging for a cosy new sweater or jacket and the holiday entertaining season looming, fall is a favourite time for a little wardrobe refresher. The season’s looks are in many ways a continuation of this spring’s trends, which included plenty of bold colours. For winter, expect orange, red and royal blue, paired with neutrals of black and grey, suggests Wendy Graham, from Sunday’s Snowflakes. Other colour possibilities include teal, and a few warmer tones associated with the season, like rich burgundy or winter berry. For fabrics, think “easy-wear, easy-care,”

but looking fine, like quality polyester, fine wools, and cotton. And don’t forget to accesorize! Find the perfect jewellery “and the essential winter scarf to go with tunics, sweaters and coats; throw on a great belt, with boots, and you have a fab look,” Graham says. This year’s must-have: a great coat or jacket – big, beautiful, warm and cozy, and dress it up with belts, scarves and gloves. And, of course great boots. For the holiday season, women are stepping away from the typical cocktail dress. Instead, “wear a great pair of pants, a wonderful top with great accessories, and you’re set!”

Beauty basics to keep your skin looking its best What does it take to keep our skin looking beautiful? A little prevention goes a long way, along with daily cleansing and sun protection, but as time takes its toll on your complexion and skin elasticity, there are options to help bring back a more youthful appearance. Kristina Hewlett, from Clear Skin Victoria, which offers a holistic approach to skin care and age management, sees many skinrelated issues; among the most common are skin laxity (jowls and neck), under-eye dark circles and lines, adult acne, dilated vessels and brown spots from sun damage, and toenail fungus. “Many of our skin concerns stem from both external causes, often excessive sun exposure and topical sensitivities due to chemical-based skin care products, and internal causes, often hormonal and digestive imbalance, stress and anxiety, and food sensitivities or unhealthy, acidic diets,” Hewlett explains. The good news is that many of these causes are largely preventable and their results treatable. “Daily use of min-

eral sunscreen and age-appropriate skin care products are vital in maintaining healthy skin throughout our lifetime,” she says. “Each decade requires unique care or ingredients to maintain optimal health and radiance. In our 20s, the major skin concern is acne, but most 20-somethings break out because they use dehydrating products that strip the skin of natural oils. This causes oil glands to overproduce, resulting in breakouts.” As we enter our 30s skin becomes thinner and finer. Loss of collagen and slower cell turnover can make our complexion look dull. “This is the time that exfoliation becomes very important,” Hewlett says. “There are many options for healthy exfoliation depending on how sensitive the skin is. Using a retinoid at night or a cleanser, moisturizer, or night cream with glycolic or salicylic acid are effective choices.” In our 40s, 50s and 60s, visible sun damage such as dilated vessels, hyperpigmentaContinued on page 11

“I have reactive, acne-prone skin, so my beauty secret starts from the inside. Balancing hormones and digestive system with photo-nutrients and digestive enzymes makes a huge difference in keeping my skin clear. I also love fresh air and exercise, so using a clean, mineral SPF 30 everyday is a must. Lastly, I try to eat organic, whole foods and avoid sugar and dairy as much as possible. This is the most common time for the use of lasers, cosmetic injectable therapies and medical peels. Following these medical procedures, the proper skin care products should be utilized to protect your freshly rejuvenated skin (and your investment). The use of serum containing peptides and an antioxidant like vitamin C combined daily with a broad-spectrum moisturizer containing mineral SPF 30, is an excellent choice.” Regardless of your age, it’s always a good idea to seek the advice of a professional who can speak to your unique skin needs.

And often, simple is best. “Keep skin care as simple and pure as possible. Remember that your skin condition will change based on diet, environment, hormones and general health. Your skin care products should complement the changes in your lifestyle and internal health,” Hewlett suggests. Cleansing skin impurities, hydration and environmental protection are the most important elements of skin care. “While some people love a five-step ingredient-layering program via serums and tonics, others would prefer to splash water on their face and go. “Luckily, there are products on the market that combine steps such as ph-balancing cleanser and toners or all-in-one serum, moisturizer and daily SPF allowing people with busy lifestyles to maintain an effective skin care program in as little as two steps.”

SKIN CARE MUSTS Few things reveal so easily how we’re feeling than our skin; when we’re run-down, our skin shows it. It just makes sense, then, to treat our skin with the respect it deserves. For the skin care essentials, we checked in with Anne-Marie Gareau, Assistant Spa Director at Aqua Terre Spa, at Parkside.

SIMPLE STEPS TO STAY HEALTHY THIS WINTER

TECHNOLOGY to give skin a youthful Whether you are experiencing increased redness on your cheeks and nose or want to head off the fine lines and wrinkles that come with age, today’s laser treatments may offer the improvements you want. “Many people are familiar with laser treatments, however, they may not be as familiar with the new laser-like technologies,” explains Yana Taylor, a registered nurse and aesthetic practitioner with clinic 805, Cosmetic Surgery

Matticks Farm • 5325 Cordova Bay Rd. 250-658-8499 • www.sundaysnowflakes.com

and Skincare Centre, headed by plastic surgeon Dr. Ken Smith. Broken capillaries and hyper-pigmentation, or age spots, are typical conditions as we age, along with the common lines, wrinkles, and even jowls. Today’s new laser-like technology is making it easier to combat these signs of aging and return a more even, youthful appearance. Where older technology might require up to several weeks of recovery time, today’s new devices make it easier to get the results you want with little to no downtime, Taylor says. For example, the new Syneron eTwo device, which uses bi-polar radio frequency energy combined with infra-red, allows clients to achieve smoother and tighter skin with no down-time. Different devices address different concerns, from stimulating collagen production and tightening skin to zapping those pesky broken capillaries that create redness on the skin. ‘The number of treatments required varies with the individual, but typically clients might undertake three to four treatments to get the initial results they want, then maintain those results with a periodic follow-up treatment’, Taylor says. For treatment of rosacea, commonly treated at clinic 805 with IPL (intense pulsed light), clients can expect three to five treatments with an annual follow-up to keep redness at bay. Discomfort is minimal, comparable to an elastic band snapping on the surface of the skin, but by applying a topical anesthetic cream first, it is really quite tolerable, Taylor says. Patients will want to be mindful of their sun exposure following these treatments, taking care to practice good skin care and sun protection. “These new skin-rejuvenating technologies are producing remarkable results,” Taylor says, recalling one client intent on a surgical facelift. When Dr. Smith advised her to improve the quality of her skin first, she turned to non-surgical treatments. “The results,” Taylor says, were such that several months later, “she was so thrilled that she may not even have the facelift.” Beyond these technologies, people looking for a refreshed, more youthful look to their skin might consider treatments such as Botox, for frown lines and crow’s feet, and dermal fillers which can help smooth lines and wrinkles, and add more fullness to the face. “Today, people are feeling much more confident to explore the vast array of non-invasive treatments. With ever changing technology, it can be confusing. For that reason, at clinic 805, we welcome questions. In fact, Dr. Smith and I are both strong advocators of education first, allowing people to then make up their minds as to what is best for them,” Taylor says.

FALL 2012

Winter is upon us and with that comes cold and flu season along with the stress of the holidays – our immune systems take a beating and our adrenals can become worn down. The question is how to stay healthy. First of all, it’s important to keep the basics in mind. “Try to avoid overindulging during the holiday season, get plenty of sleep and eat healthful, nutritious meals,” advises Renee Wilson, from The Vitamin Shop. “The right supplements can help keep you feeling and looking your very best during the stresses of winter. “Using a good multi-vitamin-mineral and extra Vitamin C daily makes a good foundation,” Wilson adds. “There is an Italian expression ‘where the sun does not go, the doctor does.’ Therefore, increasing your Vitamin D and fish oil intake can help keep your immune system strong and your mood uplifted.” A variety of other nutrients can help keep the cold and flu bugs at bay. Use extra zinc, as well as herbs such as echninacea, astragalus, elderberry, garlic and oil of oregano. And for those weary adrenal glands, adoptogenic herbs such as rhodiola, ashwaganda, eleutherococcus and mushroom complexes give added support, Wilson says. “Eat well, exercise, supplement when needed and enjoy a “healthy winter and holiday season.”

Forget earth tones – this year’s makeup trends are fresher and brighter, with a good splash of drama for evening. 2. Luscious lips for daytime – Daytime lips are looking pretty in mulberry, reds and deep burgundies – while the eyes are really kept very light, with shadows typically in nude or pastel tones, but in a glossy finish rather than matte, DaCosta says. “It’s a very fresh look, even though it’s for fall and winter.” At the same time, use eyeliner with those lighter shadows to really define the eye – think Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn – and leave brows slightly fuller than in previous years. 3. The eyes have it – when the lights go down for evening, the drama moves to the eyes – “especially the smoky eye that goes all the way to the brow,” DaCosta says. Hot colours include green, which works really well for both pale and darker skin tones, and even reds for those a little more adventurous.

Rather than using eyeliner to define the eye – as with the daytime looks – the smoky eye is all about smudging the liner, which can also be used as a basecoat to be topped with shadow (with the added benefit of longer-lasting makeup!). And rather than the darker, dramatic lip tone seen during the day, at night try lighter, glossy shades that still look lovely but won’t detract from those dramatic eyes, DaCosta says.

Resurface and tighten. It’s you, only better.

H0DWUL[™ 4. Seasonal sparkle – Finish with big, dramatic lashes, whether through extensions or false lashes – in fact you might even up the glam factor with a little colour here! – and add a little sparkle with small crystals or jewel-tone decoration at the corner of the eye or even in the brow.

Together, they exfoliate to a whole new degree and shrink pore walls, leaving you with noticeable, immediate results. HOW TO FLOSS more effectively We all know we should floss more – it’s essential to preventing tartar buildup at the gum line and reducing bleeding between teeth from enflamed gum tissue. Flossing removes food particles lodged in places a toothbrush cannot reach, such as under the gum line and between the teeth. Flossing doesn’t replace brushing, but is another tool in the arsenal of good oral hygiene. But even if we do floss, are we doing it effectively? First, find a floss product that’s easy to use and comfortable. In addition to the different types of floss itself, there are also floss brushes and single-use floss sticks that can facilitate flossing and cleaning teeth. Floss that’s comfortable makes flossing more enjoyable. Otherwise, you may put off flossing if it is cumbersome or difficult. • If your teeth have tight contact points, you’ll probably want to use a monofilament floss that will not shred or break apart. Others may be able to work with a nylon floss. Floss also comes in waxed varieties for easier gliding between the teeth, and some comes with fluoride to help pre-

vent cavities. • To begin flossing correctly, start with a piece of floss about 18 inches long. Wind the excess floss around your middle fingers and keep about two inches handy between thumb and index finger for use between the teeth. • Use a gentle sawing motion between the teeth to work the floss along the natural curve of the teeth and also where each tooth meets the gum line. • Don’t snap the floss against the gums as this can cause trauma to the tissue. • Angle the floss so it forms a “C” shape and hugs the tooth. Slide the floss up and down each tooth and make sure it gently goes a little below the gum line. Repeat on the opposite side of each tooth as well. • As you floss each tooth, release clean floss from your fingers so you have a fresh area for cleaning the next tooth. • Follow up flossing with brushing to remove any errant bits of food and plaque. Then rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash. It is best to floss twice a day before brushing. However, once a day will be sufficient and should be reserved for before bed.

Delta Ocean Point Resort& Spa Whitening is a fairly easy fix and can be done at home or at your dentist’s office; the difference is in strength of the whitening material. In the office, the trays that are used to deliver the whitener can also deliver a fuller result, reaching all around the teeth. While sensitivity can be experienced for those prone to sensitive teeth, there’s also the additional benefit of improved gum health as the whitening kills some of the bad bacteria. In addition to whitening, some clients find bonding can help create a smoother smile and can be an alternative to full veneers. Once you achieve your brighter, whiter smile, how do you keep it that way? “The biggest issue is smoking, followed by tea, coffee, red wine and dark stained foods,” Bennett says. Plus, “teeth do get a little bit darker with age as well.” If decay is a problem, it’s essential to follow proper brushing and flossing techniques and avoid sugary foods and drinks without cleaning the teeth afterward. “People brush but they don’t reach high at the gumline.”
