Its Movember, and time for the Mo Bros to once again start their moustaches.

Since 2003, growing a moustache in November is not just for kicks, but also to raise awareness and money for prostate cancer and research.

“I want to support people and their families in the greater Trail area who have been affected by prostate cancer,” said Kyle Boutin, captain ‘moustache-grower’ of team Trail Professional Firefighters Local 941.

This year, the firefighters have 12 members on board for the challenge.

“I’m going to grow the old handlebar type this year, the kind that curls up at the ends,” said Rick Morris, firefighter.

Gerick’s Cycle and teachers from Crowe may also be seen around town sporting some extra above lip hair for the Mo Bros campaign.

“Gerick’s Cycle is looking forward to growing hair to raise money for a good cause,” said Kyle Shannon, Mo Bros team member.

This year, JL Crowe is broadening its team by having the student

body grow some extra lip hair, along with the male teachers.

“Moustaches will be everywhere,” said teacher and organizer Kyle Percy.

“Hopefully we can educate, raise some money as well as keep a few upper lips warm as the weather turns south during the month of November.”

But sporting a handlebar this month offers more than a good laugh.

After humble beginnings in Melbourne Australia, Movember has grown to become a global movement that has inspired more than 1.1 million people to participate.

In 2011, Canada was the hairiest country in the world and set

a record for the most money raised. Nationwide, more than $42 million was raised by 246,000 participants.

The public can join the fun of viewing the teams and members by logging onto movember.com, which tracks donations and the ranks “Mo Bros” until Nov.30. Donations can be made at the site (movember. com) or directly to the Kootenay Boundary Fire Rescue Hall on Rossland Avenue.

The provincial government is also showing its support for Movember.

“Prostate cancer affects one in seven men,” said Minister of Health, Margaret MacDiarmid in a press release.

Celebrating Teck Trail Operations’ 40-year Medallists Trail Operations is pleased to pay tribute to sixteen employees who are celebrating a milestone achievement of 40 years of employment with the company.

To date, 1,494 individuals have achieved 40 years of service. The longest service employee was William “Mystery” DiPasquali, who holds the record of 52 years of service to the company, achieved in 1967.

Forty years ago in 1972, Teck Trail Operations produced 220,068 metric tonnes of zinc, compared to current production levels of 291,000 tonnes. We produced 184,083 metric tonnes of lead, compared to current production levels of around 86,000 tonnes.

GF Atom 1 hockey team starting to gel

The Grand Forks Grizzlies Atom B hockey team is making steady progress as the season progresses.

There are two Atom B teams in Grand Forks and Kevin Sawyer (pictured right with the team), head coach of the Grizzlies, says that his team, comprised of nine and 10-year-olds, is starting to gel.

“We (the coaching staff ) have really been impressed with how well they’ve come together as far as how keen these kids are,” explains Sawyer. “We ask them to be here

an hour early and they’re here ready to go. We’ve taught them some positional play and that’s a challenge at this level for kids that young and it’s amazing to see how they really absorb what we’re teaching them and we’re still in early-November and they’re so much farther ahead then we thought they’d be.”

Grand Forks Grizzlies’ defenceman Emily Stewart says that she enjoys playing hockey and there are a number of benefits. “It’s fun because you get to work together as a team and it’s exercise and you get to travel to a lot

of cool places and you get to make really good friends on the team,” she explains.

Like Stewart, centre Jack Thomas says he enjoys playing as well.

“I like playing hockey because it’s physical and it’s just fun,” says Thomas adding that the team has shown improvements since the beginning of the season.

“It’s been a lot better. Some of the players have really improved throughout the last couple of games and practices.

I have better conditioning and I’m backchecking.”

Saints’ Wood named BCIHL player of the week

A trio of Selkirk College men’s hockey players have been recognized by the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League for tremendous individual performances that have helped the Saints build an 8-0 record and jump into first place in the league standings.

Team captain Jordan Wood has been named the BCIHL’s Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 4 after a pair of multi-point games on the Saints’ recent twogame road trip. On Friday, Wood scored twice and set up another Selkirk goal as his team won their first-ever road game at Thompson Rivers University.

Wood currently leads all BCIHL skaters in goals and points with 10 goals and 19 points.

“Our games last weekend at TRU and SFU were an opportunity for our guys to show that they could get the job done against top teams on the road,” says Jeff Dubois. “You get points from those games by working hard, winning battles and taking full advantage of the chances that come your way.

While there is certainly no reason for West Kootenay residents to panic, the Oct. 27 7.7-magnitude earthquake in the Haida Gwaii region is definitely a wake-up call to all citizens.

Southeastern B.C. is not immune to tremors as recent history can attest.

Part of an ongoing series about local historical items on eBay. Three postcards mailed from Kaslo in the 1910s that sold last month were as notable for their recipients as for their images.

The first, a fairly beat up bird’s-eyeview of the town, went for $13 US. Although the stamp had been removed and the postmark obscured, it was dated at Kaslo, January 12, 1917 and ad-

dressed to Pte. Frank H. Abey, No. 442319 of the 54th Kootenay Battalion, London, England. Someone amended the address to read France.

The message said: “Dear Frank, Just a card to let you now I’m off to the coast in the morning. The weather has just turned lovely now.

Suppose you are in England by this time.

Hope you are enjoying yourself. Best love from all the folks.

Will write you a long letter as soon as I get down to Vancouver.

Love, from Lola” (It’s not clear who Lola was.)

The second card, a beautiful picture of the SS Kokanee, sold for $65 US. It was also mailed to Frank Abey of the CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force) at London, but the address was scratched out and replaced with BEF (British Expeditionary Force) and France.

This one was dated January 24, 1917 and read: “Dear Boy,

Wishing you a Happy New Year. All well and send their love.

No letters from you for three week[s].

Yours Dad” Despite the impatient and somewhat

1917 ominous tone of the message, Frank made it home safely. The son of Frank T. Abey and Kate Kelly, he enlisted at Vernon in 1915 at age 20 and spent four years overseas.

Frank married Myrtle Lingard in 1920 and ran a dairy ranch seven miles out of Kaslo.

According to the book Pioneer Families of Kaslo, Frank’s brother Harry joined the British Air Force and was shot down in Belgium eight days before the armistice.

He also survived and

came home.

The third card, a 1918 view of the lake taken from behind the Kaslo Hotel, went for $18.50 US. It was addressed to Hazel Fleener of 1780 Bryant Ave. S, Minneapolis, and postmarked September 17, 1918. The message reads in part: “Sent a box of plums, peaches and apples this morning, Tuesday 17th.”

Fleener was raised in Kaslo in the 1890s, the only daughter of a miner-turned-dairy operator and dressmaker.

Hazel studied music at conservatories in Berlin and Minneapolis.

Pioneer Families of Kaslo says she had a “beautiful contralto voice” and periodically returned home to perform benefit concerts. She married Donald B. Loye and gave birth to a daughter, Joan, in Kaslo in 1926.

Hazel Fleener died in California in 1983.

Trophy donated to museum

In time for Remembrance Day, a curling trophy named for Nelson’s most famous World War II veteran has been donated to the city’s sports museum. Here the museum’s Bill McDonnell receives the Hampton Gray VC Memorial Trophy from Terri Richardson of the curling club. The award, also known as the Hampton Gray Cup, was bestowed annually from 1946-62 to the winner of an annual bonspiel in memory of Lt. Robert Hampton Gray, a pilot who died in an aerial attack in Japan shortly before the end of the war. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. The trophy was in a case at the curling club, but too high up for anyone to read. Green Party calls for smart meter review staff West Kootenay Advertiser

Nelson-Creston's provincial Green Party candidate doesn't want wireless smart meters installed in local homes.

Sjeng Derkx thinks the power company should opt for the wired-in meters instead.

“The health concerns of individuals about wireless smart

meters are still a matter of debate in the scientific com-Cmunity so Greens only endorse the installation of hard wired smart meters that make use of existing electricity or telephone lines,” Derkx said in a press release.

In July, FortisBC filed an application with the BC Utilities Commission requesting approval to begin installing smart me-

ters on homes and businesses in its service area. If the application is successful, meter exchanges would take place over a two year period beginning in 2014.

Derkx, along with Green Party energy critic Michael Jessen, successfully applied for intervener status to speak against the application at a BCUC community meeting in Trail on

November 6, as well as at a hearing in Kelowna in February.

The Greens are also adding their voice to the call for a review of the BC Hydro smart meter program, something Nelson NDP MLA Michelle Mungall requested in the legislature last April.

“Nelson-Creston Greens are very concerned with the way BC Hydro was al-

lowed to implement their smart meter program," Jessen said, referring to the fact the Liberal government exempted BC Hydro from the BCUC adjudication process on smart meters. “The Green Party is calling for a moratorium on further smart meter installations by BC Hydro."

Derkx echoed Jessen's concern.

“Hydro’s smart me-

ter program is costing $1 billion and no alternative uses for that money were considered,” Derkx said, “$1 billion would have funded free home energy retrofits for 50,000 low-income homeowners, for instance.”

Meanwhile, Nelson Hydro has nearly completed replacing 10,000 mechanical metres with digital meters that include

a radio-read feature, but are not the same smart meters being installed by other utility companies. The new Nelson Hydro meters emit a 900 megahertz radio signal, while smart meters installed by BC Hydro emit a signal between 902 and 928 MHz. In both cases, the signal strength is far less than safety limits set by Health Canada.

Opinion Atamanenko column -Veterans deserve the best of services

Bi-monthly column from Southern Interior Member of Parliament Alex Atamanenko.

There is a fair amount of debate today about Canada's role in the world and the role that our military continues to play.

Many feel that Canada should be returning to a peacekeeping role, while others feel that the current direction is more appropriate in today's world. Regardless of how we feel about this issue, I firmly believe that we must do our

utmost as a society to look after those men and women and their families who have chosen to serve in our Armed Forces. This includes giving them the very best support when they return from combat or retire from active service.

In this Remembrance Day column I would like to share some thoughts of my colleague, Peter Stoffer, a passionate advocate for veterans for many years.

"It is important for us to remember be-

cause those who went to war will never forget. We need to ensure that the men and women who served, and their families, have the best of resources to meet their needs over the course of their lifetime - from the moment they sign up to the moment they pass away.

New Democrats are leading the way with practical proposals to improve the care of our military and RCMP veterans and their families.

For many years we

have proposed the following: end the clawback of retired and disabled CF and RCMP service pensions, expand the Veterans Independence Program to all veterans including widows and the RCMP, and grant veterans’ ‘marriage after 60’ pension and health benefits.

We continue to press for a public inquiry into CFB Gagetown defoliant spraying, long-term care for all veterans, and the elimination of the politically appointed

Veterans Review and Appeal Board. We are pushing for reforms to the New Veterans Charter, an increase for funeral expenses, action on veterans’ homelessness, and better care for those suffering from PTSD. We advocate for a system that will evolve with the changing health care needs of veterans and that will treat all veterans equally.

In addition to Peter's comments I would to say that, since being elected to Parliament, I have observed how some military personnel need to fight with the current government to receive the benefits they justly deserve. I remember one case of a woman from Ontario who had to go public to finally shame those in authority to ensure that her son, suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), would receive adequate treatment. It seems ironic that a government that finds enough resources to send our soldiers into combat often lacks the resources to assist them when they return.

Therefore, as we take time to reflect on the sacrifices that Canadians have made for our country, let us also do everything in our power to ensure that our veterans have the very best support available through their benefits. They deserve it.

If Dennis Manuge of Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia, had not launched a class action lawsuit against the federal government over the clawback of injured Canadian Forces veterans’ disability pensions (SISIP), the issue would likely still be unresolved. It is outrageous that the federal government spent over $750,000 to fight these injured veterans in court. We also know that the federal government has not settled with RCMP disabled veterans in a case that mirrors the SISIP issue and the RCMP have now filed their own class action to end the unfair deductions from their long term disability payments. As well, veterans exposed to chemical spraying at CFB Gagetown, veterans subjected to atomic weapon testing, and veterans unhappy with the New Veterans Charter lump sum payments may plan to launch class action lawsuits against this government to try to get the benefits they

Winners honoured at Castlegar Sculpturewalk Gala Craig Lindsay Castlegar News Reporter

It was a big night for the artists at the Castlegar Sculpturewalk Gala on Saturday night at the Element Club Bar and Grill.

The People’s Choice winner was the beautiful heron piece “Patient Hunter” by Kevin Kratz and James Karthein of Krestova.

The piece will now by bought by the city

of Castlegar for display. In addition to the $15,000 paid for the sculpture, the pair also receive $3,000 in cash prizes.

The runner-up, winning $1,000 was “Salmon” by Christina Nick.

The Artistic Merit award (Shown in picture at left) was won

by Kate Tupper of Argenta for the piece, “Full Metal Basket”.

Beyond race, religion, creed and so on, the clashing of economies due to multi-national interests, a centuries old theme, rages on. Of course, woven within it all is politics. True democracy both invites and challenges increased participation.

‘Private Eye’ (bronze)

Reg Parsons is truly an artistic renaissance man. A gifted sculptor and painter, the Cranbrook resident is also something of a poet, using verse to occasionally accompany and summarize the subject he has captured in stunningly lifelike detail. Take his entry in this year’s exhibit. It is a magnificently realized bronze of a red-tailed hawk sitting on a fence post in all its splendor.

Now Cal and the rest of the club members cordially invite all you photographers to join in the fun and submit your favorite pictures to the “23rd Annual WKCC Photo Show 2013” competition, to be held early next year. As in the past, there are several categories to be displayed and judged. With many new categories and one additional category -Wildlife added, there will now be a total of ten, giving everyone lots of latitude for their skills and artistry to be displayed. The categories are; Nature, Wildlife, Human Interest, Creative Image, Flowers/Plants/Fruit, Portraiture, Architecture, Weather, Travel, and an
