The Vancouver Art Gallery’s enormously popular FUSE will light up the night Nov. 9. Three Fridays a year for the past seven years, this eclectic adult event has combined live performance, music, DJs and gallery tours with unexpected surprises. that area,” says Schein. “You increase the number of people taking their cars to go farther away to see a movie. Also, theatres like the Ridge do a lot of benefits, free showings for charities — we’re in the midst of the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival. So those charities getting money from the neighbourhood theatre and bowling alleys won’t be getting those donations, that support anymore. It’s the same for neighbourhood soccer teams, softball teams, and daycare centres.”

Hani Lammam, vice-president of development and acquisitions for Cressey Development, the condo developer, says this is simply an issue of economics.

“Obviously we are not theatre operators and we’re not bowling alley operators, we’re developers,” Lammam says. “So we decided it was a building that reached the end of its economic life and it’s not good business to reinvest and try to maintain a building that is at the end of its life.

There is a lot of vacancy and it appears that it can’t support more businesses.”

And while the current building may not make business sense, the theatre and bowling alley seem to make sense in other ways.

“The feeling is terrible,” says Hayden, who would like to work with the parks department on a new city-owned bowling alley for the West Side. “To give you an example, one day one of our bowlers seemed to be distraught and my wife went over to try to console her — this girl had special needs. So when Judy asked what the problem was, she told my wife she was crying because the bowling alley is going down. So that pretty much says it all.”

No construction date has been set for the project.

he Arbutus Ridge community will soon be mourning the loss of two of its members.

Plans to tear down Varsity Bowling and the Ridge Theatre were approved by the City of Vancouver’s development permit board on Oct. 22. Replacing the lanes and the theatre will be a four-storey commercial and condo development.

“It’s my life,” says Ken Hayden, who has owned Varsity Bowling since 1981. “I’ve been in the business since 1976. I know a lot of people who have been bowling here since ‘81— I have third generations coming in.”

Hayden takes a long pause.

“So you can imagine how that is. It’s just the best thing in the world and now it’s going to be the worst thing in the world.”

Not only do they provide entertainment for the area (it is estimated that about 700 people use the lanes as league bowlers), the bowling alley and theatre are active members of their community, helping their neighbours and other groups.

Dozens of those community members had marched on City Hall earlier in October to try to save the bowling lanes.

Leonard Schein, operator of the Ridge Theatre is sad, but realistic, about this change.

“I feel very sad because I have a 34-year history with it,” says Schein who is also with Festival Cinemas, “but single-screen theatres are very difficult to operate with the huge property taxes and utilities — and people aren’t attending single-screen theatres like they used to with all of these multiplex theatres.”

Councillor Adriane Carr thinks that this is a big loss for the community.

Reply all: Sign me up for email study UBC’s Happy Lab wants volunteers to document how frequent checking of emails makes them feel

f you don’t mind, I have to check a few emails before I start writing this story….

Now, where was I? Kosta Kushlev is a PhD candidate at UBC’s department of psychology. He has

a special interest in happiness and, in this case, identifying those things that prevent us from being as happy.

Oh wait. Another email just arrived in my inbox. I should answer it….

Speaking of emails, Kushlev has noticed that while technology has made communicating with others so much easier, it’s also created a lot of stress in our lives. Unlike someone who has to knock on our office door after we’ve closed it in the hopes of getting some quiet time for our work, the people who send us emails don’t ask if this is a good time to talk or not.

But his own personal experiences, while

interesting, do not knowledge make. He wanted to do a study — Hold on, someone I emailed earlier today just responded and I need to let them know I got their email….

I’m back.

Kushlev wants to do a study on the links between how often we check our emails.

And he wants to find Vancouverites who will volunteer to help him.

Here’s how it would work. For one week, people would check their emails only three times a day. The next week he wants them to check emails as frequently as they can.

Each day for the two weeks, he’d send them

a questionnaire about how many positive and negative emotions they experienced as a result.

Such surveys have been done before, but usually with students. Kushlev wants to get about 120 “real people” to experiment with how their email habits affect their moods.

“We’re particularly interested in people who use email for work and people who receive a large volume of emails,” he says.

Veterans learn to soldier on as civilians Funding allows UBC program to help ex-military members across Canada drop their mental baggage

pl. Tim Laidler raised his rifle, aimed it at the figure dressed in black who was cycling headlong towards the guarded gate at the Kandahar air base, and started to pull the trigger.

“I remember, in that moment, I was going to shoot him. I just knew it,” says Laidler.

But he didn’t. He paused for a split second and realized that his target was not a Taliban insurgent, but a teenaged boy. In that same moment, the youth turned in his tracks and rode off.

This near-shooting is one of many traumatic experiences that left Laidler mentally shaken upon his return to Vancouver after an eight-month tour of Afghanistan with the Canadian Forces in 2008.

“It was like a movie reel play-

ing over and over in my mind,” explains the 27-year-old. He would remember the dead and wounded and imagine scenarios where, had he acted differently, he could have prevented tragedy.

“I’d feel my face going bright red and I would start to get really upset and angry, then I would feel really down and low after.”

Laidler began to experience nightmares, flashbacks and feelings of apathy. Then, in 2010, he discovered the UBC Veterans Transition Program (VTP), which helps men and women returning from military service re-establish healthy civilian lives.

Laidler learned communication skills, stress management and, through re-enactments, he came face-to-face with the Afghan teenager he almost shot.

Laidler is now executive director of the newly formed Veterans Transition Network, established with $1.45 million in donations from the Royal Canadian Legion, Veterans Affairs Canada and other organizations. Thanks to this funding, the non-profit network will be able to expand its treatment program across Canada.

He says many soldiers bring home a “soul injury” caused not so much by their own near-death experiences, but by memories of being unable to help a situation.

“A lot of the military, their values are to help others, so if they can’t save someone’s life or they can’t protect the child in a refugee camp, that haunts them,” Westwood says. “The biggest pain for me is when they don’t get treatment and they have to medicate

with drugs or alcohol.”

Research has shown the VTP reduces trauma symptoms, decreases depression and enhances selfesteem. “The biggest difference is on depression scores,” says UBC assistant professor Dr. Dan Cox, who heads the program’s research wing.

Current data is based on the veterans’ symptoms immediately before and after treatment. Now, Cox is working on a follow-up study to see if these gains persist.

Today, Laidler likens his upsetting memories of Afghanistan to a

black-and-white photograph rather than a repeating movie.

“When I dropped some of my baggage from overseas it opened up a whole new capacity inside me to do more and to be more focused,” he adds, noting he is now working on his masters of counselling psychology at UBC. So far, 275 veterans have participated in the VTP. With the national expansion, Laidler hopes to reach 2,000 vets over the next five to 10 years.

Waffles for breakfast, lunch & dinner

f you went to Belgium and asked for a waffle for breakfast, you might get some strange looks, says Jan Dierckx, who grew up in Antwerp. In Belgium, where waffles are sold on every street corner and at every market, waffles are more of an afternoon snack or dessert.

To make concessions to North American tastes, when Dierckx and his wife Eilnaz opened Nero Belgian Waffle Bar on Robson a few months ago, they decided to open at nine on weekend mornings. (On weekdays you have to wait until 11 to get your fix.)

But where they won’t tinker with Belgian waffles is how they’re made.

First of all, Jan says, there’s no such thing as “a” Belgian waffle.

There are two types. The Liege is sticky and sweet with crunchy shards of sugar popping every few bites. Smaller and served after being warmed on the griddle, you generally eat it on its own, wrapped in paper.

The Brussels is airy and delicate. Larger and less sweet, its made-to-order lightness hits the spot in tandem with toppings or ice cream. (Most toppings are sweet, although there are some savoury options as well.) Fresh seasonal fruit is a favourite, but so too is the freshly made whipped cream.

While everyone has an idea of what makes a good waffle (think mom’s table on a Sunday morning), the contrast between the Brussels and Liege will set you squarely in one camp or the other, and have you coming back for more.

Fresh at the farmers market: carrots

eautiful bunches of purple, orange, red, white and yellow carrots — another perk of shopping at the farmers market. While the colours have no reflection on flavour, heirloom carrots, in general, are far sweeter than anything masquerading as a carrots at a super market. And they have better names — when’s the last time you atE a purple dragon?

The term “heirloom” refers to edible plant varieties, not just carrots, that humans have been growing for hundreds of years. They are genetically distinct from commercial varieties and have unique colours, textures, and tastes not found in factory-farmed industrial produce.

While best eaten fresh, heirloom carrots also lend themselves very well to roasting, and steaming, which help to maintain their nutrients the best. Beta-carotene, one of the most powerful antioxidants, vitamin A, for the eyes, and minerals are available in ample amounts in this tasty root.

Sweet and Spicy Roasted Carrots, Parsnips, and Chickpeas *adapted from The Kitchn online 1 pound heirloom carrots 1/2 pound parsnips 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons urfa biber* or chili powder 1/4 teaspoon coarse kosher salt 1/2 cup cooked chickpeas 1 tablespoon pomegranate molasses 2 ounces feta cheese, crumbled (1/2 cup) 1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley Preheat oven to 400°F. Scrub carrots and parsnips well, and halve lengthwise. If carrots are small and slender, leave them whole. If parsnips are large, quarter them lengthwise, cut out the woody center, and, if necessary, continue to cut into thinner strips to match carrot size.

Toss carrots and parsnips with 2 tablespoons olive oil, urfa biber/chili powder, and salt. Spread in a single layer on a large rimmed baking sheet and place in oven to roast. Toss chickpeas in remaining olive oil.

After 15 minutes, turn carrots and parsnips, add chickpeas, and roast for another 10 minutes.

Then toss with pomegranate molasses and roast for another 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender and golden.

Remove from oven, toss with feta and parsley, and serve.

ancouver is a great place for foodies because we have many restaurateurs who open new restaurants and remove the barriers with different types of cuisines and exciting dishes that are full of unique and exotic flavours.

People should get out of their comfort zone and visit more of the hidden gems that they may not have heard of before. Exploring neighbourhoods is a great way to find new eateries. By broadening views people can enjoy the cultural diversity that our city has to offer. This past year I created an event series called Tasting Plates, which is a chance for people to try something different, including food from restaurants, food trucks,

cafés and bakeries in Vancouver.

People get the chance to explore a neighbourhood, and taste a variety of dishes. Foodies get to experience some of the newest and tastiest offerings, eat new dishes, visit new restaurants, meet the chefs and meet new friends along the way.

Our food community is fortunate to have many organizations that educate the public. The Growing Chefs charity does fine work educating children in the classrooms. Farm Folk City Folk offers exciting programs and events such as its annual Feast of Fields event. Vancouver Farmers Markets, as well as many other markets, bring the farmers’ locally grown products to people who are eager to find fresh and great tasting ingredients.

ucked within the plethora of Best of the City readers’ choice awards this year is the Best Wine List category, which has Hawskworth Restaurant (HawksworthRestaurant. com) handily occupying the number one spot. In this wine-savvy city, it’s no small feat to be widely recognized as the best in your field, but it’s a testament to the dedication of Hawksworth’s small army of sommeliers that their excellence hasn’t skipped a beat since wine director and sommelier Terry Threlfall hung up his jacket earlier this autumn to tackle a little wine travel and future endeavours. Currently he’s tromping around Chile’s sunny vineyards but can have peace of mind that the wine program he lovingly built, nabbing him a Vancouver International Wine Festival Platinum Award and the title of Sommelier of the Year, is moving forward and maintaining every aspect that’s earned it so many accolades.

My favourite things include its balance of Old and New World classics and left-field oddities, the dozens of wines by the glass (including taster-sized portions), their dedication and pride in British Columbian wine, and strong, creative personality from the team that shows in every section.

One particular project of theirs that I’m a fan of, and an increasing local trend I enjoy, is the creation of two custom-made wines in conjunction with a local winery as exclusive pours made with their particular style of cuisine in mind. Spearheaded last year by assistant wine director Jay Whiteley, who currently leads the wine program and sommelier team, the Similkameen Valley’s Orofino Winery, along with owner/winemaker John Weber, worked with the team to create wines that would complement the fresh, lively and bright flavours signature to David Hawksworth’s food.

H’s Blend 2011 White ($11 per glass / $55 per bottle) is a quirky blend that sums up well. Half Pinot Gris and half Riesling, a sip is akin to taking a bite from a ripe, juicy Asian pear with a small spritz of lime as a chaser, with classic BC minerality shining through all the way. H’s Blend 2011 Red ($11 per glass / $55 per bottle) blends 100% Gamay from two different vineyards, resulting

in what is becoming definitive style for the grape in the sandy, windswept region; an earthy, dusty handful of cherries with tiny flecks of fresh sage giving it a nice little lift. Extra points to Hawksworth’s wine team for always serving it with the slightest bit of a chill; the wine simply sings!

Second down in wine list department this issue is the encyclopaedic tome at Cioppino’s in Yaletown (CioppinosYaletown.com), a head-spinning list of depth and breadth. It offers everything from local gems for a few bucks a glass to far-back vintages of Bordeaux and Italian heavy-hitters that drink incredibly with Pino’s elevated Mediterranean fare.

Ogle celebrities and multi-million-dollar business deals being made over killer pastas and ossobuco, pick a legendary bottle and make sure someone else pays!

Rounding out the list is Gastown’s L’Abattoir (Labattoir.ca) where there’s been another recent changing of the guard. After sommelier Jake Skakun headed to Toronto a couple months back, Robert Herman (Cin Cin, The Loden Hotel) stepped in, looking to continue the wine program’s reputation for small-batch, unique selections not widely available elsewhere (Xinomavro from Greece, anyone?) and leading a well-engaged staff to curate your vinous journey.

Next week I’ll follow up with a few more of the winners from this edition who take advantage of our proximity to wine country, partnering up with local winemakers to create tailor-made wines: Granville Island’s Edible Canada, Cactus Club and more.

Take El Camino’s out for a spin OnThePlate

O

ne of the hardest things for a restaurateur to ever do is to admit that their concept isn’t working and to start from scratch.

It’s rare, but it happens, and one need look no further than Main Street’s El Camino’s for proof of it. You might already know the busy 45-seater as a place serving quality cocktails and Latin American street food to nightly packs of Riley Park cool kids, but before this past April it was the quiet Latitude, a rather slick and clean-lined Latinthemed wine bar serving prettily presented dishes inspired by the cuisines of Latin America.

If those two concepts sound remarkably similar, that’s because they are. Aside from overhauling the food and drink menus, owners Wendy Nicolay, Nick Devine, Nigel Pike, David Nicolay (the same crew behind The Union, Habit Lounge, and The Cascade) only changed the name and fiddled slightly with the décor. Those small moves completely changed the vibe of the place, and the neighbourhood came in like they never had during Latitude’s three-year existence.

Just the name change alone makes it more accessible. It might mean “The Road” in Spanish (minus the Spanglish possessive apostrophe), but El Camino entered the Canadian lexicon as something of a Hollywood stereotype, or at least as the vehicular extension of one. You might recall that an El Camino is a classic Chevrolet muscle car with a cult following, particularly in Southern California, and when most Canadians hear the words they

likely picture Latino actor Danny Trejo cruising the barrios of Los Angeles in a souped up 1975 model while listening to War’s hit single “Low Rider”.

Translation: it’s a cool car, and a much better name than Latitude (which sounds straight up French for “The Attitude”). Beyond the name, they’ve improved the interior by introducing a little whimsy. They’ve also kept the back wall of red wine-stained wood blocks, which was the restaurant’s main talking point motif until they emblazoned the wall with the words Nada como una revolución para curar la sed y el hambre, or “Nothing like a revolution to cure thirst and hunger”). How very fitting.

Of course, none of that would matter if the food is bad, but it isn’t. The real trick is that it never was. The menu may have changed (it’s substantially more Mexican than pan-Latin), but it’s basically the same “small and sharable” concept, albeit with the much sexier, de rigueur suggestion of “street food” and a liquids emphasis that has shifted away from wine to cocktails.

I’m particularly glad that they’ve kept the golden brown chickpea fries (or a thinner facsimile thereof with smoked paprika aioli, and knocked a buck off the price (to $6). The most expensive items — such as the full pound of zippy anillo del fuego chicken wings and the messy Peruvian stir fry on patas fritas — weigh in at $12 apiece. Not bad when you remember that Latitude’s prices went as high as $20.

I loved the empanadas, especially the ones stuffed with chorizo and squirty guasacaca a (an avocadobased condiment with some zing to it). Each of the five tacos are worth trying. The taste of the slow roasted pork in the carnitas version came close to being overwhelmed by a pickled escabeche but was

saved by a bridging queso blanco. The same pork showed better in its arepas incarnation, when it is combined with a punchy chipotle slaw and banana peppers inside a grilled corn pocket. The best taco of the lot was the carne asada with its tender, wellseasoned and perfectly grilled beef topped with horseradishy Jack and a swamp green plop of guasacaca.

Two of the big sub-style sandwiches — aka bocadillos — stood out.

One was a chimichurri and short-rib monster with manchego cheese and a load of arugula (impossible to finish), and the other was the vegetarian Verdurajo, which saw layers of avocado, manchego, lettuce, and tomato amplified by fire roasted peppers and a punchy corn salsa.

To supplement a shared supper, go in for one or two of the little side dishes, such as the papas chorreados

— a Colombian combo of potatoes, cream, cheese, onion, and tomato.

And for drinks and dessert, stick close to any of former Bartender of the Year Nick Devine’s cocktail creations (or just go traditional with a proper margaritas), and give in to the mindless indulgence of their flourless chocolate cake with coconut gelato and chocolate ganache.

The service is casual, quick, and pragmatic — as in the bartender will deliver a drink to a table while shaking another for a different table. It was fine before, but it feels better somehow.

Bottom line: EI Camino’s is nothing fancy, which is to say that it’s the ideal neighbourhood restaurant. Everything about the place just clicks, and when that happens, you don’t change a thing.

Beaucoup Bakery would be a good one

magine quitting your job and moving to France to learn the fine art of pastry from the masters.

Picture travelling around France and Italy eating your fill in order to better understand how wonderful and satisfying food can be.

Sounds impassioned. Sounds crazy. Sounds like what Jackie Ellis did.

Just five years after opening her own design firm, and doing quite well at it, she gave it all up to follow her dream. There really is no better place to learn pastry in the world, and Paris was waiting. After studying she did a stage with Angelina Salon du Thé and then, this is the good part, just followed her appetite around France and Italy for months of glorious indulgence.

Ellis immersed herself in the food and culture of Italy and France and admits she ate with wild abandon. “I needed to understand food the best way I knew — to eat it. It was amazing.”

She came back to Vancouver inspired and perhaps a little bit rounder. She got to work and the evidence of all the croissants, macarons and cheese she enjoyed in Europe fell away, but their impression did not.

Her experience as a designer would come in very handy designing her business. With a keen eye for detail and an ability to make things look beautiful, and now taste beautiful, Beaucoup Bakery began to take shape and she got to work selling with Vancouver Farmers Market and tempting shoppers with beautifully displayed delectable treats such as

local summer berry tarts and chocolate hazelnut tarts.

Although definitely inspired by her travels abroad, she was not quick to forget her childhood favourites. Even though she never found a brownie in France, there would definitely be brownies at Beaucoup. Like everything else, they would be made of the finest ingredients using some wellhoned classic techniques — Valrohna brownies with crystallized violet and salted caramel blondies, to be sure.

Ellis has continued to learn from the best so she can offer the best. Most recently she went to barista training at 49th Parallel Coffee’s headquarters in Burnaby and completed a honey tasting with Mellifera Bees honey. She has been recipe testing for months now, fine tuning her lemon tarts with candied lemon peel and milk chocolate rice pudding with blueberry cinnamon compote and hazelnut streusel.

Although sweet treats will be the focus, quiche, sandwiches and salad will be available for lunch.

“Come in for a treat — Beaucoup will be a place that feeds your body and your soul,” Ellis says.

Opening is scheduled for the end of November.

It also reminds us that with a dollop of passion, a spoonful of determination and lots of butter, dreams can come true.

Dudepins is like Pinterest for men (or testosterone for sub-cockles)

Top 10 tips for a successful job interview

ccording to the Dudepins website, the idea for a manlier version of Pinterest came from the virile equation of “2 dudes + 2 computers + 1 idea + infinite scotch = non-infinite income.”

“There actually was scotch,”says Dudepins cofounder Kamil Szybalski, who started the site with Colin Brown. “It was at least three quarters [of a bottle] of Johnnie Walker Black. I know it sounds like an over-exaggerated story, but it was really us sitting on a deck, smoking cigars and having a scotch and having a really good old time.”

The Dudepins site is a venue, a community where men — and women, who are referred to as Dudettes — can share their interests via online pinboard.

While the notion of “manly” has become a very ambiguous as of late, Dudepins provides some clarity in the definition of masculine content as “something that injects enough testosterone to tickle your sub-cockles‚“ (which may or may not refer to testicles, Urban Dictionary explains). Organized over 15 categories, the pins on the site are masculine in a Don-Draper-meets-I-love-you-brah kind of way.

“It’s basically a way for people to browse male interests and organize them and engage other dudes into them and share,” says the Kits resident who moved from Toronto about a year ago. “It’s a just community of male interests.”

“We’re going to be a serious touch-point for men to visit and to relate to,” says Dudepins co-founder Kamil Szybalski. Supplied photo So far, there has been a lot of interest. Szybalski says that they have been experiencing 30 to 50 per cent user growth. In early November, the partners plan on launching a new, non-beta rebranded site along with applications for the iPhone and Android platforms.

“We’re moving towards defining a community, a defining a brand for Dudepins,”he says. “We’re not just going to be a site; we’re going to be a serious touch-point for men to visit and to relate to.”

So will my sub-cockles get bigger after joining Dudepins?

Szybalski laughs.

“No, but you probably will want to eat more bacon though. You might experience an influx of bacon-desire and testosterone.”

1. Dress for success. Professional business clothes are always appropriate, regardless of the type of job you are interviewing for. Proper hygiene and a tidy appearance are important. Iron your clothes if you can, and avoid strong perfumes or colognes.

2. Be there on time. Try to arrive 5 or 10 minutes early to be safe.

Find out ahead of time where you’re going and how long it will take to get there. Drive or travel the route a day or two ahead, at the same time of day as you will on the day of the interview. Confirm how often the buses run. Have a back-up plan.

3. Let your personality shine.

If you’re excited about the job, don’t be afraid to show it. Employers want passionate employees, so be yourself. Just remember to always keep it professional.

4. Be confident. Feeling nervous in an interview is perfectly normal; just don’t let your nerves overpower your interview. Eye contact and a calm, clear speaking voice are excellent ways to show your confidence.

5. Watch your body language.

During your interview, relax and sit naturally, but don’t slouch in your chair or lean on the interviewer’s desk. Avoid chewing gum, or fidgeting with jewelry or your hair.

6. Be professional. This begins with a smile and a firm handshake.

Remember, this is your first introduction to the organization, so be polite to everyone you meet and turn off your cell phone.

7. Listen and ask for clarification, if you need it. Remember to listen carefully to the interview questions so that you actually answer the question, and never interrupt. If you don’t understand something, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification.

8. Let them know what you have to offer. When answering the questions, let the employer see what you have to offer their organization. Talk about your past experiences and accomplishments without bragging, and tie those experiences to how they can help you contribute to their organization.

9. Think before you speak.

Although you want to be open and honest in your interview, avoid talking about your personal or financial problems.

10. Don’t linger. Leave as soon as the interview is over, making sure you don’t linger. Shake the interviewer’s hand again, restate your interest in working for the organization, and thank them for the interview. Source: Youth.gc.ca

he rich language of a Shakespeare play can pose a challenge for even the most veteran of thespians, but to replace the Bard’s famous words with human movement presents a whole other test of creativity.

Vancouver-based dancer/choreographer Crystal Pite was up to the task. In her latest full-length work, The Tempest Replica, staged by her contemporary dance company Kidd Pivot, Pite has created a visually unique performance based on motifs from Shakespeare’s classic tale of vengeance and forgiveness. “[Pite] was looking for a script that she could use to challenge herself as a choreographer,” said Kidd Pivot dancer Eric Beauchesne. “She found [The Tempest] very interesting in terms of characters; she saw almost the same people that she had in her company in the play.”

Beauchesne plays the magic-wielding protagonist, Prospero, and six other dancers round out the cast.

The Tempest Replica had its world premier in October, 2011 at the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt where Kidd Pivot was in residence for two years. The troupe

Beauchesne says those familiar with the original Shakespeare play will recognize the fundamental elements of the story in the narrative dance adaptation.

“The main plot points of The Tempest are there; the epilogue is there; the tension between revenge and compassion and forgiveness is there,” he said.

Kidd Pivot retells the earlyseventeenth-century story in

two visually distinct parts. In the first half, which, much like the play, opens with a shipwreck, the dancers wear faceless, chalk-white suits. Beauchesne describes this segment as an etherial “neopantomime” that employs simple body language to deliver the essential plot points of the story.

“It’s almost like a little model of the piece at first, with puppetlike looking dancers that have no face,” he said.

In the second part, the dancers change into street clothes and the emotion and tension of the characters is palpable.

“The aesthetic of the movement is very lush and powerful and articulated and very passionate,” said Beauchesne, explaining that the play’s timeless themes of revenge, compassion, virtue and forgiveness maintain their relevance in today’s urban society.

To give depth to the choreography and help the audience follow

the action, The Tempest Replica makes use of multimedia tools — a projection screen, video clips, and some written text.

And much like The Tempest, which is regarded as Shakespeare’s final play, this most recent Kidd Pivot work will be the company’s last production before taking a hiatus.

The retail world in Korea is pretty intense. They have huge wholesale night markets in Seoul and shop owners work all day and night because they have to go night market to buy stock but also run their shops during the day.

With a successful online business, what drew you to open a store at all?

When we started our online store, we were actually more popular outside Canada, but as a Canadian company, we felt it was important to get to know our Canadian customers. Also, we love interacting with people face-to-face.

Our combination of pieces from North America, Europe and Asia brings our store a fashion-forward, international flare which is pretty unique compared to the local stores. We also cater to a variety of different clientele, from the effortlessly chic West Coast gal to the someone who likes to be decked to the nines.

What is your favourite décor element in your store?

Right now we’re sharing a space with Ric Yuenn and he has a lot of vintage furniture such as chairs and lamps which we just adore.

Movie Reviews Gone are the gadgets. Bond gets personal SKYFALL

Directed by Sam Mendes Starring Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem The world’s favourite super spy is back and this time around things are getting personal. With veteran director Sam Mendes helming the latest installment, 007’s newest adventure is indeed the most emotional and dramatic in the series. The performances are gripping, the action is thrilling, the villain is diabolical and yet Skyfall still manages to finish a few notches below Craig’s first outing in Casino Royale.

The story opens with the trademark breathtaking chase that veers into the ridiculous. After MI6 comes under attack, Bond must track down the culprit in a true test of loyalty as

M’s (Judi Dench) past comes back to haunt her in the form of the creepy and vengeful Silva (Bardem). The scene depicting Silva’s introduction (which arguably comes too late in the picture) is one of the best in any Bond flick.

There are flashes of brilliance, hampered by a bloated mid-section. The movie is bookended by a frantic start and a truly riveting end. Gadgets are gone in favour of a realistic approach, the human emotion governing the characters is palpable and Thor this is perhaps the most beautifully shot movie in Diakow the series thanks to the craftsmanship of cinematographer Roger Deakins. However, the quintessential Bond girl (Bérénice Marlohe) is underdeveloped and forgettable. Not everything works in Skyfall but it gives the franchise much needed rejuvenation after Quantum of Solace.

Directed by David France Transporting us back to New York’s Greenwich Village in 1987, David France’s documentary reacquaints us with a world that’s barely recognizable anymore. It’s the sixth year of the AIDS epidemic and contracting the virus is tantamount to a death sentence. With casualties piling up and homophobia running rampant, there’s no end in sight and hope is in short supply.

Drawing from an astonishing archive of camcorder footage shot on the front lines, France details the grassroots activism that eventually turned the tide in this life-and-death battle by making experimental drugs more readily available to the HIV-positive. Remarkably, practically every watershed moment can be found here, whether it’s an integral closed-door meeting of the ACT UP advocacy group or the highprofile confrontation between protestor Bob Rafsky and Bill Clinton on the 1992 presidential campaign trail. (The latter incident is credited with making AIDS an election issue.)

However, what makes this such a powerful piece is that it doesn’t just serve as a comprehensive his8:26 AM tory of this activist movement. It also manages to capture its entire emotional arc, following key players through their darkest hours when determination ceded to desperation. Initially empowered by the belief they have nothing to lose, the few subjects that survive the “plague” now bear haunted countenances that suggest that their hard-won victory cost them more than they could ever articulate.

As one of them admits, “Like any war, you wonder why you were the one who came home.” In the case of his surviving compatriots, it’s to serve as living examples of the standard that all activists should hold themselves to. — Curtis Woloschuk

VAG advice

The price of $22.50 admission to the Vancouver Art Gallery is high for those of us on a reduced income. There should be a lower price for BC residents. And there should be an entire free day to visit the VAG, not just 5 to 9pm on Tuesdays as it is currently. In these recession-hit days, perhaps the VAG would get more visitors to make up the shortfall if they reduced the price to $10 on weekdays and keep the weekend price at the current level.

Starring Thure Lindhardt, Zachary Booth Directed by Ira Sachs In charting a troubled relationship’s careening course through a decade of tumult, the latest feature from writer-director Ira Sachs ultimately reveals itself to be a protracted coming-of-age story.

When Erik (Thure Lindhardt) is first glimpsed in 1998, the struggling filmmaker is trolling phone sex lines in search of a casual encounter. He eventually finds precisely what he’s looking for — and more than he bargained for — in Paul (Zachary Booth), a closeted literary agent. Two years later, the men are living together as a couple. In the ensuing eight years, Paul’s peccadillos — casually smoking crack, for instance — give way to wanton self-destruction and outright cruelty.

Given that Erik and Paul are modelled on Sachs and his former boyfriend Bill Clegg, it’s unsurprising that Erik should take centre stage.

However, Sachs’ depiction of his surrogate is commendably clear-eyed and occasionally scathing. Early on, someone chides Erik, “In your twenties, it’s charming to be up-and-coming. In your thirties, it’s pathetic.” Undoubtedly, there is something pitiful about Erik at the narrative’s outset. His clinginess and petulance are decidedly childlike, as is his stubbornness. However, as that latter attribute slowly evolves into a more dignified resolve, he’s finally afforded the opportunity to mature as both an artist and a man.

Sachs’ unadorned shooting style and Arthur Russell’s folky score conspire to lend Lights a timeless quality. Likewise, the unnervingly intimate film tells a universal tale about how self-reliance can sometimes only be forged amidst hellish co-dependence and dysfunction. — C.W.

I was glad to see the Nov. 1 Rants/Raves with four excellent letters. Crotch Texters was very funny and the Vancouver speed-up was confirmation. I wondered why cars were suddenly so close. Maybe it’s safer not to signal. Cell phone radiation is damaging brains and leading to aggressive behaviour.

You get the feeling Scatterheart’s underwater video was hard to make

ike Southworth can now “fondly” look back on the 12 hours he spent submerged in a pool and being pelted with water.

It had, after all, seemed like such a simple idea — why not shoot most of his band’s next music video under water?

But you try it.

You try mouthing the lyrics to Scatterheart’s latest single from the bottom of a pool at night. You make it look like anyone can spend 30 continuous seconds singing under water as if there was nothing more natural in the world to do — unless, of course, you’re playing your drums on a stage far below the water’s surface.

Southworth is the drummer and one of the lead singers in the Vancouver band. He’s also a recording engineer and video maker for other bands.

Somehow, he managed to convince Doug Fury (guitar and vocals) and Wes Deboer (bass and back vocals) that it would be neat to film 90 per cent of the video for their new single, I Get the Feeling…

We’ve Hit the Ceiling either submerged under water or while having buckets upon buckets of water tossed on them.

“There’s an inside joke that I say, ‘No, I don’t think it will be that difficult,’” Southworth says of his approach to coming up with some of the ideas for the band’s videos. Then he admits, “It’s rare that it ends up getting simpler.”

That’s what Scatterheart’s fans have come to expect, however. The band’s videos are “visual art”, as creative as the music itself. In Better Than Before, the camera follows one of the Green Men as he runs through an obstacle course as a single shot. The even more complex Awesome Machine split each band members’ face in three as a constantly changing — and yet perfectly matched — Rubik’s Cube.

For half a minute, Scatterheart drummer Mike Southworth “sings” the lyrics to the band’s new single under water. When they weren’t filming below the surface the drummer and bandmates Doug Fury and Wes Deboer were being pelted with water.

In this new video — the third since former lead singer Jesse Enright left the band — Scatterheart spent an entire night at a private pool in Tswassen called Water Vision at the end of September. “I love water and I love swimming under water so I thought, ‘Hey, why not?,” Southworth says. While the video portrays them jumping into a well, off a wharf into the Pacific, and into a fountain pool, they spent from seven at night to seven in the morning at Water Vision.

“It’s nerdy but I did do some training [for singing under water],” Southworth says. “I sat in the bottom of a pool pretending to sing and drum.”

The singing was fairly easy. Playing instruments proved more challenging. Not only do drums want to float, but band members expended more energy, and therefore more air, making long shots by submerged cameraman Stefan Berrill impossible.

For those worried about the equipment, fear not. The water-soaked drums and guitars were purchased on CraigsList and while the drums survived, Southworth says they can use the waterlogged guitars if they want to burn them or throw them into a wood chipper for the next video.

Scatterheart recently opened for Men Without Hats but have no immediate concerts planned. Instead of waiting for an entire album’s

worth of new songs, they’re releasing their singles, including I Get the Feeling, one by one every six weeks.

Of course, when they do play live, it will be impossible to replicate the video but, that said, “I was renting some equipment from Holly North and they actually have a 20’ by 20’ water tank,” Southworth muses. “You could do it….”
