Though he was passed over in last summer's NHL Entry Draft, the 18-yearold Richmondite is again showing his selection as the top defenceman at the 2012 Royal Bank Cup national Junior A hockey championship was well-deserved and accurately reflects his talent. For the second consecutive sea-
son, the Penticton Vees' blueliner has been selected to the 22-player roster that will represent Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge on through Nov. 11 at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, N.S. Stecher's steady play during the 2011 event in Langley was instrumental in Canada West winning the gold medal. Pooled in Group A along with the Czech Republic and Russia, Canada West plays its first game versus the Czechs
at noon (Pacific Time) Tuesday and faces Russia at the same time Wednesday. Playoffs begin Thursday, with the final Sunday at 3 p.m. Canada East is pooled with Switzerland and the U.S. in Group B. Stecher recently de-committed to play, beginning next season, for the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks, meaning he's free to accept a scholarship from any National College Athletic Association school.
