no shortage of the latter. Created by novelist Ian Fleming in 1953, the suave, sardonic, sartorially splendid super spy has spawned 23 movies, the latest of which, Skyfall, is being released on Friday. Despite being portrayed over the years by seven different actors with varying degrees of sophistication, smugness and satire, Bond has endured all manner of threats to global peace and security, triumphed over a multitude of diabolical villains. He’s “classic” and “timeless,” says Balfour who’s seen all the Bond

Balfour. Melissa Balfour. She may prefer her beverages be stirred, not shaken, but that doesn’t diminish her enthusiasm for James Bond movies. On Thursday Balfour will be putting her Moneypenny where her heart is by hosting a James Bond Supper Club, For Your Eyes (and stomach) Only potluck at the River Market. It is, she says, a chance to make new friends, share some good food and celebrate all things 007. There’s

movies. “You can watch it as a kid and you don’t really know what’s going on.” Especially between the sheets. There’s no doubt Bond has a way with the ladies, loving and leaving them as he battles malevolence; sometimes they’re even one and the same. He is, says Balfour, “the ultimate bad boy.” “You wonder who’s going to tame that guy, but it never ends well.” Balfour counts Sean Connery’s six-film run as a dark, introspective Bond as her favourite. But the current version, played by a
brooding, hard-edged Daniel Craig, is moving up the charts. “A Bond movie is an event,” says Balfour, who’s hoping her guests will dress up as their best Bond character. She’ll have plenty of poker chips and punch martinis on hand, and the evening will be topped by a screening of the 1981 Bond film For Your Eyes Only, starring Roger Moore. The James Bond Supper Club begins at 6:30 p.m. For more information and to RSVP, visit: www.facebook.com/pages/NewVeganminster-Project.

Historic swag lights on Columbia Street lamps evoking visions of New Westminster’s Golden Mile are in the works. On Monday, council was being asked to approve issuing a request for proposals (RFP) to build the replica lights from Fourth to Eighth streets. It’s estimated between 12 and 18 swag lights would be needed to achieve the desired effect. A staff report said the cost would be determined through the RFP process. The report also asked council to approve an interim holiday lighting plan that would include, for the first time, the rental and installation of a 38-foot sculptured Christmas tree for Hyack Square as well as lighted garland pole wraps. They would come at a cost of $7,690 plus HST, said the report, with the Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Association contributing $2,500 for the tree. please see LIGhTING, A5
