Cigarette case tells a story

By Jennifer Smith Pete Atkins quit smoking years ago, yet he still holds on dearly to the cigarette case he used to routinely reach into for a puff.

It’s not the habit that he clings to but the memories that this special case holds.

Atkins served 14 months in Palestine as a young lad, after which he got a job in Port Said, Egypt in 1948.

It was there that he met a German prisoner of war who served under Field Marshal Romel.

“We both worked in the officer’s mess, he was waiting to be repatriated back to Germany, and I was waiting to be sent back to England,” said the now 84-year-old Atkins.

“I was a cashier (the officers paid for their meals) and he worked in the kitchen.”

The man had made an ornate cigarette case out of his mess can and offered to sell it to Atkins.

“He just wanted coffee beans to take back because I guess in Germany they were short of coffee beans,” said Atkins, who’s not sure how the man constructed such a detailed silver case.

The case immediately caught his eye, with one side picturing a soldier and his girl under a lamppost, relating to a popular wartime song Lily Marlene.

“That hit home,” said Atkins, who would later return home to find a beautifully grown young girl he once knew as a child. He married that girl, Rita, and her picture is now nestled next to his inside the case’s heart (on the inner flap of the case).

Atkins has since held onto the case, which is now more than 60 years old.

He even has a little write-up about it tucked inside, so it’s story, and memories, are never lost.

“This is so my kids know what it’s all about,” said Atkins.

Remembering one of our local heroes Corporal Randell Smith Crocker trained at the Vernon Army Camp and served in the Royal Canadian Army September 1941 to July 1946, earning the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Italy Star, Defence of Britain Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and 1939-45 War Medal. He moved to Salmon Arm in 1971, where he passed away.

The Poppy is a Symbol of Wartime Remembrance

...And their names are engraven on honor’s bright crest.

The poppy has stood as the official symbol of Canada’s Remembrance Day since 1921, a visual reminder of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for war. Some may wonder why this small flower is used to represent the fallen soldier.

Poppies and fallen soldiers have a long history together. The origins of the flower can be traced back to the Napoleonic wars in France. During these times of unrest and battle, many soldiers went on to final resting places in graves in Flanders, France. Ensuing literature describing how poppies grew so thickly and vibrantly over these graves -- in soil that once could not produce much vegetation.

Years later, a soldier would be instrumental in bringing the symbol of the poppy to the hearts and minds of Canadians.

Just a common Soldier He was getting old & paunchy, & his hair was falling fast and he sat around the Legion telling stories of the past of a war that he had fought in, and the deeds that he had done In his exploits with his buddies, they were heroes, everyone.

And tho’ sometime to his neighbours, his tales became a joke, All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke, But we’ll hear his tales no longer, for old Bill has passed away, And the world’s a little poorer, for a Soldier died today.

He’ll not be mourned by many, just his children & his wife, For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life.

Held a job, and raised a family, quietly going his own way, And the world won’t note his passing, though a Soldier died today When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state, And thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great Newspapers tell their life stories, from the time that they were you But the passing of a simple Soldier goes unnoticed and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land, A person who breaks promises and cons his fellow man, Or the ordinary fellow, who in times of war and strife, Goes off to serve his country and offers up his life?

A politician’s stipend and the style in which he lives, Are sometimes disproportionate to the service that he gives While the ordinary Soldier, who has offered up his all, Is paid off with a medal, and sometimes a pension small.

It’s so easy to forget them, for it was so long ago, That the old Bill’s of our country went to battle but we know, It was not the politician, with their compromises and ploys, Who won for us the freedom that our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand, Would you want a politician, with his ever shifting stand?

Or would you prefer a Soldier, who has sworn to defend, His home, his kin and country, and will fight until the end?

He was just a common Soldier and their ranks are growing thin, But his presence should remind us we may need his like again, For when countries are in conflict, then we find the Soldier’s part Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start.

If we cannot give him honour, while he’s here to hear the praise, Then at least let’s give him homage, at the ending of his days.

Perhaps a simple notice in a paper that would say, Our country is in mourning, ‘cause a Soldier passed away...

When John McCrae served in World War I as a Lieutenant-Colonel, he was stationed near Ypres, Belgium, the area traditionally called Flanders. McCrae observed how poppies grew so well among the makeshift graves of the soldiers, which were marked by wooden crosses. When McCrae lost a fellow soldier and close friend, he penned a poem called “In Flanders Fields” and portrayed the picture of war and the poppy flower visual.

To this day McCrae’s poem remains among the most memorable war poems ever written.

It also paved the way for the poppy flower to be one of the most recognized symbols of wartime remembrance. Thousands of poppies are placed on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and Remembrance Day participants wear poppies on their lapels.

Remembrance Day in Canada is a day to commemorate members of the armed forces. Remembrance Day is observed each year on November 11 because that marks the official end of World War I in 1918. On that day, the Germans officially signed the armistice, an agreement that officially put an end to the fighting in WWI. That’s one reason why Remembrance Day is often referred to as Armistice Day. Though the day has a significant connection to World War I, it also honors the men and women who fought for Canada in World War II, the Korean War and those who continue to serve in the military. Over the years, more than 1.5 million Canadians have fought for their country and to defend the rights and freedoms of non-Canadians as well.

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.

Ways to celebrate Remembrance Day Remembrance Day is an annual holiday when veterans of the armed forces are honored and celebrated in Canada.

Remembrance Day, which is observed in November, honours all military veterans.

The role of the brave men and women who serve in the military is an important one, and it’s one that warrants appreciation and celebration. The following are a few easy ways to celebrate veterans and their significant contribution to our country this Remembrance Day.

* Offer your thanks. Serving in the military can feel like a thankless job, as those who have not served might not be aware of the risks men and women in the military take and the sacrifices they must make to protect our country and help the less fortunate across the globe. As a result, something as simple as saying “Thank you” to a current service member or military veteran can go a long way. Veterans know they don’t serve in vain, but it’s still a great idea to let them know how much you appreciate their efforts and sacrifices. * Help families of active military. Many service members are currently stationed and serving overseas, and their families back home may need or just appreciate a helping hand. Invite family members of active military over for dinner, offer to do chores like cutting the grass or shoveling the driveway when it snows or help around the house if something needs fixing.

Even if families of active members serving overseas appear to be getting along great, offer your friendship and let them know you’re there to help should anything arise. * Visit hospitalized veterans. Unfortunately, many veterans are hospitalized after suffering an injury during a tour of duty. These veterans sacrificed their physical well-being to protect our way of life, and many spend extended periods of time in the hospital. Visiting a hospital to get to know a veteran and spend some time with him or her, sharing a few laughs and thanking them for their service, is a great way to celebrate the holiday and lift a veteran’s spirits at the same time. Recruit friends and family members to visit hospitalized veterans as well. * Pay for a veteran’s night out on the town. Like many people, veterans appreciate an escape from the daily grind. Men and women who want to show their appreciation to veterans can treat a veteran to a night out on the town. Have extra tickets to a hockey game or play? Donate them to a local veteran. Or if you see a veteran out on the town, offer to pay for his meal.
