PORT HARDY— Murray Doak makes a living out of talking to other people. But when he was asked on three days notice to give the best man’s speech before a wedding party of more than 100 people this fall, he was glad he had two years of Toastmasters meetings under his belt.

Doak is a flight service specialist at Port Hardy Airport.

In other words, he works in the tower, communicating with pilots to guide them into and out of the airport.

“Professional communications on state-of-the-art equipment is one

thing,” said Doak. “But when you get any one of us in the tower out in front of a group of 20 or 30 or 40 people, we’re like anyone else.

“It’s that fear of public speaking that brings people into Toastmasters.”

Doak delivered a sparkling wedding speech, crediting it in part by the two years he spent attending meetings of the Port Hardy Toastmasters Club before it disbanded last fall.

Now, after its one-year hiatus, Port Hardy Toastmasters has been re-formed under the direction of an enthusiastic young director and is holding weekly meetings at North Cont. on Page 5

Jobs Plan ‘on track’ Even with the loss of 10,900 jobs in October, the province remains on track to meet its BC Jobs Plan targets., the government said in a press release.

B.C.’s job numbers declined for the month but kept pace with the overall job figures across the country.

“The B.C. Jobs Plan is all about building a foundation. It’s about putting in place the skills required for tomorrow and building on our investments to grow the economy,” said Pat Bell, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour. “There are bound to be fluctuations in the monthly jobs numbers but our focus remains steady economic growth by continuing to invest in a skilled workforce.”

Since the Jobs Plan

was released, B.C. ranks third compared to other provinces, behind Quebec (gained 55,200 jobs) and Alberta (gained 50,400 jobs).

Since February 2011, B.C. has added 56,500 jobs.

(In February 2011, there were 2,260,900 jobs.) B.C. has gained 70,800 fulltime positions, offset by a loss of 14,100 part-time positions.

(In February 2011, there were 1,741,900 full-time jobs).

B.C.’s labour force decreased by 18,600 people in October and now stands at 2,484,800. Compared with 14 months ago, B.C.’s labour force has increased by 31,100 people. B.C.’s unemployment rate of 6.7 per cent is down from September’s rate of 7.0 per cent and is 0.1 of a percentage point higher than

October 2011’s rate of 6.6 per cent. B.C. has Canada’s fourth-lowest unemployment rate.

Alberta (4.5 per cent), Saskatchewan (4.7 per cent) and Manitoba (5.6 per cent) have lower unemployment rates.

The unemployment rate for youth (15 to 24 years of age) was recorded at 13.4 per cent, down by 0.6 percentage points from September. In October 2011, the youth unemployment rate was recorded at 12.7 per cent.

Last month strong gains were recorded in finance, insurance, real estate and leasing (+10,300 jobs), other services (+8,000 jobs), information, culture and recreation (+5,000 jobs) and construction (+3,200 jobs).

Already making a difference in the community From Page 3 Island College. After a few short weeks the club is already making a difference in the community.

“Joining Toastmasters will change your life” said Brian Scott, president of the new club.

Brian was a member of Campbell River Toastmasters before moving to the North Island in June. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2011, where his favorite professor told him that joining Toastmasters was one of the best ways to advance his career and improve his confidence.

“When I attended my first Toastmasters meeting, I could not believe how comfortable and confident everyone appeared” said Scott.

He found the communication skills he had learned in Toastmasters helped him get over his own shyness and he realized that the best way that he could continue practicing these skills was to re-establish a club on the North Island.

“The club was established in September and has already had 21 different people attend the meetings,” said Scott. “There is lots of laughter and interesting stories provided at every meeting.”

Doak said that the previous incarnation of the club rarely drew more than five or six people. So what is the difference this time?

“Brian,” Doak said with a laugh. “He’s brought some new energy to the group.

I believe ‘gung-ho’ would be the term.

“It takes 20 members to charter one of these groups, and that’s not an easy thing to accomplish in a town the size of Port Hardy.”

Originally intrigued by the communication opportunities, Scott found the greatest lessons from Toastmasters in the leadership experiences.

“You learn how to keep your audience engaged while you are speaking, which is something I think all leaders need,” he said.

Toastmasters is a non-profit organization

that provides a supportive and positive environment in which members have the opportunity to improve their communication and leadership skills. Meetings can be compared to ‘learn by doing’ workshops in which members work through a variety of Communication and Leadership projects.

There is no instructor; instead, Toastmasters receive constructive feedback from their fellow members. It is a great place to build confidence and meet other people in the community.

“Watching my fellow members advance through the program and build confidence in such a short amount of time, is the most satisfying part about being in the organization,”

Scott said. He has watched members in the Port Hardy club develop listening and critical thinking skills, leadership potential, self confidence, team building, and much more after only five meetings. He said the wide demographic of people attending meetings, each with their unique speaking styles and personal stories, makes meetings really enjoyable.

Meetings are held at North Island College each Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The evenings are kept entertaining, positive and friendly.

Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to attend as a guest.

Tim (whose real name has been withheld at his request) has been clean and sober for just more than one year.

“I managed to get a good grip on sobriety and keep it and a big part of that is thanks to Second Chance,” he said.

Tim did the 28-day Supportive Recovery program at the Second Chance Recovery House for men in Campbell River.

Before that, he spent many years of his life controlled by his addiction to alcohol.

He would often wake up having slept outdoors the night before and he had no money and no food.

“It was too much work to keep going on like that day after day,” he said.

“I was hungry, I lost so much weight, as much as possible without being dead, the next step was death.”

In fact, when he finally made it to the hospital for help, the doctor told his family to make funeral arrangements for him.

But Tim pulled through and attended a detox program in another Island community.

When it came time to look at options for

longer term treatment, he wanted a smaller program.

Campbell River’s Second Chance Recovery House fit the criteria as there are only 10 beds – four for Crisis Stabilization and six for Supportive Recovery.

More than 500 tickets were sold and the weekend fishing event saw 224 fish weighed in. Shane Bradley won $1000 dollars with his catch ner Shane Bradley, Derby Win of 17 pounds.

Esther Hollink and Brayden Dixon from of Brown’s Bay Cumberland caught his first Chum fishing with his dad and grandfather at the derby.

Freshwater fishing is good in all areas in Courtenay and Campbell River. The north end Brayden Dixon with 1st Chu of Wolf m Lake has been fishing well trolling a wedding band, fishing from shore has produced trout using Power bait at many of the local lakes, including the Lower Quinsam where trout can get to the 3 pound size and Echo where the pan size trout can be caught on black woolly bugger flies or casting lures from shore.

The local anglers can still fish at Discovery Pier even when the weather is wet and windy.

Second Chance Executive Director Tessera Brooks said many of the clients often comment on how surprised they are to find such a homelike environment when they come

to the facility. Like many families, the residents at Second Chance have daily chores to complete, including washing dishes, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms and mopping floors.

One client will help a staff member with the weekly grocery shopping.

“It’s all part of the recovery process, to help them develop life skills,” said Brooks.

The men also attend twice daily support groups

Monday to Friday and one group Saturday morning. This is in addition to the five out of house AA or NA meetings they are required to attend each week. During the groups the men will learn about the 12-step recovery process, boundaries, co-dependency, communication skills, mindfulness, selfesteem, different kinds of relapse triggers, and anger management while identifying trauma and behaviours

that led to their addictions.

The clients also complete an after care plan so they will know where they are going to live, who their sponsor is and what AA or NA meetings they will regularly attend.

It also includes appointments with other components of their support network, including Mental Health and Addictions Services, Psychiatrists, Doctors, therapists and Diabetes or Liver

Clinics.

The men also include a back to work/ school plan, budgets and family visitations/ therapy sessions.

If you would like to help Second Chance, cash donations are welcome or they are currently in need of new or gently used single bed comforters and winter coats.

With the holidays approaching, they will need gifts for the men who will spend Christmas there.

Flexibility works for Lucas Renee Andor Black Press COURTENAY — Connor Lucas was very busy with extracurricular activities during his time at G.P. Vanier Secondary School — but he still had time to excel academically.

In fact, Lucas did so well academically that he received the school’s Governor General’s medal for academic excellence.

Lucas was not the traditional high school student in the sense that he took all of his academic courses through distributed learning, (distance education), and went to Vanier for its acting and theatre opportunities.

Lucas notes the combination of schooling was a “good fit” for him.

“I worked on my own very well as far

he said. Lucas was on Vanier’s team that won the Canadian Improv Games in 2010, and was involved in plenty of Vanier’s theatre productions.

Besides acting, he also plays violin and piano and sings. He was the runner-up at Performing Arts BC for Classical Voice

earlier this year, and he’s part of the Cantiamo Chamber Ensemble in the Comox Valley.

Dance is another form of the arts Lucas is fond of; he has trained in ballet, jazz, tap, musical theatre and contemporary.

Lucas plans to head off to post-secondary

for musical theatre, likely next year after he saves up some money by working in the Valley. He recently started a job at White Spot and he teaches classes at Pantuso Dance.

Lucas says choosing a distributed learning model for his academics also allowed him more flexibility to pursue his passion for the arts extracurricularly.

“Because of this

(learning method) I was able to — say if I was doing a musical, then I could take time off school essentially and focus on that, and then when the musical ends I could just work a little harder at school for the next couple weeks and catch up,”

after a performance, and when he told that to someone, that person helped him figure out why he feels that way.

“They said ‘well maybe it’s because you just do it for yourself, and you don’t feel like it’s something that deserves a compliment because you’re really just doing it for you,’” recalls Lucas. “And it’s true, I just do it, it just, it’s a really great release — it really just makes me feel like I’m in the right place.”

As for his academic medal from the Governor General, Lucas is pleased.

“I’m very honoured.

I’m proud of what I’ve done but I’m also, I’m really thankful to my teachers and my mom,” he says. “I’ve won awards in the past, but this is a big one.”

CR Literacy’s on a mission “A drop of ink makes thousands think.

If you’ve learned to read, you can learn to succeed”. – Unknown Campbell River Literacy’s mission is to raise awareness of literacy issues in the community.

For example, did you know that more than one in four adults struggle with reading and writing?

At the Campbell River Literacy Association they have five programs, which contribute to learning.

These are: Community Adult Literacy Program (CALP), the English as a Second Language (ESL) Settlement Assistance Program, English Practice Group, Youth ESL Program, and the Computer Literacy Program. Last school year, the association

Chathuri Dammalage, Brian McLoughlin and Svetlana Harper participate in one of C.R. Literacy’s ESL tutoring sessions aided 169 learners with the assistance of 92 volunteer tutors.

They rely on their community volunteers to assist learners in

meeting their literacy goals.

“We want to make the learning environment fun and a relaxed fun place

to come. If you like meeting with your tutor for help, you are likely to continue.

That is why we do lots of fun activities, games

and field trips,” said Julina Spetch, ESL Program coordinator.

B.C.’s Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid and provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall got their flu shot today to demonstrate the importance of getting vaccinated as part of the provincial influenza immunization campaign.

Clinics are now open throughout the province, and eligible British Columbians are able to get immunized at a wide variety of locations - from dedicated flu clinics, to their doctor’s offices, or local pharmacist.

Specially trained pharmacists have been able to offer immunizations for three years. More than 2,000 community pharmacists throughout B.C. are authorized to provide the flu vaccine this year. Influenza can be a serious illness.

Each year thousands of Canadians die from its complications - most of them seniors, or those with compromised immune systems or underlying

health conditions.

This is the first year all healthy children between six months and five years of age will be eligible to be vaccinated for free. Each year, young children are among those most severely affected by complications from flu, as their immune systems are still developing. Parents are encouraged to get their children vaccinated and to get vaccinated themselves.

This year also marks the first year of the health-care worker influenza prevention policy, which requires all health-care workers in British Columbia to either get vaccinated or wear a mask for the duration of flu season.

This policy will protect vulnerable patients and seniors from potentially contracting influenza from their caregivers or while at a healthcare facility. Flu shots are provided free of charge to all British Columbians who are at risk of developing complications, or those who have close

contact with at-risk individuals.

Those eligible include: * People 65 years of age and older and their caregivers. * Children and adults with chronic health conditions and their household contacts. * Health-care workers. * Emergency responders. * Healthy children between six months and 59 months of age (under five years old). * Household contacts and caregivers of children under five years old. * Pregnant women who will be in their third trimester during influenza season. * Residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities. * Owners and operators of poultry farms. * Aboriginal peoples. * People who are very obese. * Corrections officers and inmates of provincial correctional institutions.
