Unretirement suits her Valerie Porteous says she enjoys putting time in at the store RENEE ANDOR Record Staff “I’ve been very busy, very, very busy,” says Roxanne’s Fashions owner Valerie Porteous of the time since she’s taken over the business.

Previously a business manager with Revlon Canada before she retired in 2009, Porteous, 58, quickly became bored in her retirement. She started working at Roxanne’s for something to do and after hearing former owner Oxena Yaremko wanted to retire, Porteous bought the longtime Comox Centre Mall store at the beginning of this year.

Since then, Porteous has made some changes — while still remaining loyal to longtime customers.

“The biggest concern in the changeover was not to alienate the existing customer base and to reassure them that we would continue to have the full representation of Alia and TanJay,” says Porteous, “but in conjunction with that

I started branching out and bringing them some new lines, so that’s been a lot of fun.”

Porteous notes higher-end products like Bianca Nygard and Peter Nygard are additions to the store’s offerings, as well as a selection of made-in-Canada product lines. She’s also in the midst of developing a plus size department in the 4,000-square-foot store.

Along with the new lines, she started branching out her customer base a bit.

“I’ve been transitioning the store from a marketing position of a 60-plus retailer to a 40-plus retailer,” explains Porteous. “So my target market is really the professional woman 40 to 60 and then the retired woman 60-plus.

“So what we have now is what I call a mix of product and price points — good, better, best — so something for all budgets, so I’m really proud of that.”

She also updated the fitting rooms and cash desk, repainted the store, created a website, www.roxannesfashions.

com, and created a Facebook page called Roxanne’s Fashions. Porteous plans to start an Internet newsletter soon where customers can find out about promotions and special events like fashion shows at the store.

Moving product through the store quickly is important to Porteous, so she has increased promotions to ensure a regular rotation of stock.

“I’m very big on, you know, after 30 days we start to mark it down, after 60 days we start to clear it and then after 90 days we’re really motivated to get rid of it,” she adds.

Throughout the changes, Porteous has been asking customers for feedback to help ensure she’s going in the right direction. She makes an effort to work on the till as often as possible so she can hear first-hand from customers.

“It’s really a lot of fun getting feedback from customers and that’s been the biggest motivation to keep going,” she says. ❖ writer@comoxvalleyrecord.com

Quality of life relies on hearing SCOTT STANFIELD Record Staff Gordon Hearing Services is an independent hearing clinic owned by longtime Comox resident Jason Gordon.

The university-trained audiologist opened the Comox Avenue clinic three years ago but has worked in the field since graduating from UBC in 2000.

He enjoys working with hearingimpaired individuals and improving their quality of life.

“I’m the only full-time audiologist in town,” said Gordon, who does house calls and hospital visits.

“As a business owner, you definitely do that extra little bit to make sure that everyone’s happy.”

Recently, for instance, the daughter of a patron who had parked

Medicine Shoppe continues to expand RENEE ANDOR Record Staff The Medicine Shoppe in Comox continues to expand — and now offers more non-pharmaceutical healthrelated products.

The store recently expanded to include a further 600 square feet of space adjacent to it, and will offer new products like walkers and bath safety aids such as grab bars, raised toilet seats and shower seats, as well as more selection of items like compression stockings and braces.

Co-owner Tim Cowan is pleased with the business’ expansion.

“We’re excited. We’re pumped,” says Cowan with a grin.

“Traditionally our focus has been health care, and we just think this is a natural extension of the health care.”

The Medicine Shoppe took over the space in late August and started retrofitting work in September. The addition features a window display seen from Comox Avenue, which will be changed seasonally to showcase different products with different themes.

Cowan plans to hold a grand opening celebration later this month, which will coincide with the store’s 12th anniversary and celebrate the business’ success and growth over the years.

“We see it as a sort of a natural progression of our business,” says Cowan of the recent expansion. “We started with 1,500 square feet and after about five years a bay came open so we took it, so we went to 3,000 square feet and now this other front half of the bay has come open so we’ve added an extra 600 square feet.”

Cowan points out not all of the new products will be physically stocked in the store all the time, but the Medicine Shoppe will be able to source items in a timely fashion if they’re not in stock.

Cowan notes he’s often had to direct customers out of Comox for some of these non-pharmaceutical healthrelated items in the past, and is pleased to be able to offer these products to Comox customers — in town.

“I think we’ll be able to have a larger product offering than what currently exists in Comox,” he says. “And we’ll have good, better, best, you know, we’ll have your standard line and then we’ll have, you know, if somebody wants to pay a little more they’ll get a higher quality product, too.”

The Christmas season officially kicks off in the town when Santa arrives at Filberg Park and makes his way down Comox Avenue to the Comox Centre Mall, explained Kathy Penner of Comox Business In Action.

The day begins at Filberg Park with families encouraged to meet there for hot dogs, hot chocolate and more.

Santa is scheduled to arrive around 4:15 p.m. for a walk through the park, prior to hopping on a flatbed truck to dance and rock his way down Comox Avenue.

Penner said the Dukes of Dodge will provide the musical entertainment and children can follow Santa to the mall for face painting, balloons, and a magician.

Santa and his band will play inside the mall for kids and parents to dance.

Even though the skies might be grey and the weather getting colder, the Comox BIA is offering a way to the bright lights and big city — lucky streak not included.

If you have back, neck, arm or leg pain caused by degenerated or damaged discs, spinal decompression therapy might be the answer for you, says Comox chiropractor Dr. Doug Price.

In almost all cases, the safe, nonsurgical treatments are completely painless, says Dr. Price, adding that many people even fall asleep during treatment.

“It’s the evolution of traction therapy,” Price says. “We’re trying to enhance that and take it to a new level.”

He says theirs is one of only two facilities on Vancouver Island north of Victoria to offer spinal decompression therapy.

The unit gently separates the vertebrae from each other, creating a vacuum inside the discs that are being treated. The objective is to draw bulging discs inwards, off

nerve roots and their sacs, thereby giving the patient relief.

This happens microscopically with each treatment, says Dr. Price, but the results can be dramatic over four to six weeks. The cycles of decompression and partial relaxation over a series of visits promote the movement of water, oxygen and nutrient-rich fluids from the outside to the inside of discs, he explains.

These nutrients enable the torn and degenerated disc fibres to heal.

A computerized tension meter constantly monitors the tension being applied while the patient relaxes on the treatment platform. Each treatment session is individually programmed by Dr. Price, following a comprehensive assessment. If patients are already being treated by another chiropractor, he encourages patients to continue their care with that chiropractor.

Dr. Price uses the Triton decompression system, which he says is

simpler and less expensive than other DTS (Decompression Therapy System) models. Costs range from $500 to $800 (for a complete treatment protocol), compared to $3,000 to $5,000 with physicians using other DTS systems in the larger centres.

Dr.Price, who has been in practice for over 28 years, says he is the latest in the oldest, continuously operating chiropractic practice in the Comox Valley, stretching back to the 1950s. He has been at his current site on Comox Avenue since 1993.

Dr. Price completed his undergraduate work at Simon Fraser University and then attended Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto for four years to complete his doctorate in chiropractic.

The lunch menu includes soups, breads, salads, wraps, paninis, burgers and pasta.

Along with an assortment of appetizers such as Salt Spring mussels, tiger prawns and crab cakes, the dinner menu features pasta such as linguini tossed with sauteed shrimp and scallops, and butternut squash ravioli.

“The penne pesto is the big seller,” said Bill Meade, who owns the restaurant along with his wife Wendy. “A lot of the pastas are

popular but the penne is probably the most popular one.”

Curry pasta is another favourite, as are the veal dishes.

“Veal is really very popular,” said Bill, noting few places in town sell it. “It’s fresh veal we get in from Quebec.”

The oven and grill portion of the menu also features seafood, beef, lamb and chicken dishes.

Dessert includes creme caramel, creme brulee, tiramisu, cheesecake, chocolate mousse, ice cream and profiteroles (pasty stuffed with ice cream, drizzling with chocolate sauce).

“We do our best,” said Bill, noting the weekend dinner hour is the busiest time, though they fare well during the week, too.

“We put a lot of work into it.

Kyle adds the Lord of the Rings series and the Harry Potter books are also popular — likely due to the movies — and often in stock.
