VALLEY LIVING HEALTH & BEAUTY
HAUTE SKIN! If you are young, you know what it looks and feels like to have a great complexion. Your skin tone is even and its texture smooth. However, as we age, our skin starts to lose suppleness, develops fine lines, wrinkles, bags and sags, not to mention age spots, lack of luster, uneven tone, and a rougher texture. We often feel disappointment with the way our skin looks as we age and yet there is no need to. Let’s be proactive and do something about it. Let’s use proper skincare for our individual skin type. Stop messing around with whatever looks good out there or whatever is on sale! Talk with your aesthetician and get a prescription for what is best for you! Get regular facials. Why? For young people, facials are a great preventative treatment to help slow the signs of age. And between the ages of 30 & 55, regular facials can be very powerful in creating changes in the physiology of skin. After 55 there are many changes that can be achieved at a cellular level with regular treatments and appropriate skin care. Although good skin care does not prevent aging, it does slow down the development of the signs. When you have a professional facial you can expect to see an immediate improvement in your skin but that diminishes and your skin is soon back to the way it was. This is because one facial cannot change the physiology of the skin. In order to change it, you have to change the way you are treating your skin and keep up those changes. This is where a good aesthetician is so invaluable. She will show you how to care for your skin, teaching you the ‘what’ and the ‘why’, along with creating a home care regime that will be both easy to use and work with your individual skin type. Unguided, many people are using the wrong products for their skin type; this can cause the skin to become sensitized.
BENEFITS OF REGULAR FACIALS: regulation of immune system, detoxification, fluid reduction, exfoliation, collagen stimulation, firmer and younger looking skin, stress relief and an overall healthy glow.
BENEFITS OF AESTHETICIAN PRESCRIBED SKINCARE: correct prescription for your skin type with proper instructions to achieve and maintain the desired results!

SPICE IT UP INSTANT ESPRESSO POWDER
some things are better rich! Discover a surprising secret of professional bakers - espresso powder. Instant espresso powder blends a deep, rich flavor into everything from cookies, brownies, cakes, pies and tarts to frostings, sauces and ice cream. It's a delicious addition to baked goods and sweets of all kinds and enhances truffles and tiramisu recipes. Espresso powder is an intensely dark and concentrated instant coffee that is ground, brewed, and then dried from specially selected coffee beans. Instant espresso is the coffee crystal, which is why the fine powder dissolves beautifully into desserts such as custards, buttercreams or mousses. Instant espresso is a natural pairing with dishes that incorporate nuts and caramel. A must for chocolate desserts, espresso powder emphasizes chocolate's complexity without imparting its own distinct coffee flavour. Add a teaspoon or two to your favorite brownie, chocolate chip cookie, devil’s food cake, or other chocolate recipe, and taste what a difference it makes – your chocolate will sing! Most bakers keep espresso powder in their pantry as seriously as they do spices and essential ingredients. Use just a little, from 1/2 to 2 teaspoons, to draw out the natural flavours of chocolate desserts, frosting and sauces. To achieve a more pronounced mocha flavour in baking, use 2 teaspoons or more.

STEP 2: Use a sharp paring knife and cut a 4 inch circle into the top of the loaf. Remove the circle of bread you've cut and save it as a lid for the soups.
STEP 3: With your fingers, pull out the bread from the centre of the loaf leaving about a 1 inch wall of bread on the sides and bottom. Save the bread you've removed to dunk into the soup.
STEP 4: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Place the bread bowl on a baking sheet. Brush the inside of the bowl with melted butter or olive oil. Bake the loaf for 10 minutes, or until golden brown. The bread bowl is now ready to be filled with soup, chili or stew.

About Chili con Carne Chili con carne from Spanish to English means "chili with meat." Most food historians believe the dish is a southern US creation first simmered to life in San Antonio, Texas, in the 1800s. The dish is believed to have Mexican influences, but is not Mexican in origin. In North America, chile con carne is now often simply called "chili." It's most often a spicy, saucy, tomatoey combination of ground beef and beans that might include vegetables, such as onions and bell peppers. Beyond ground beef, many other types of meat and meat-free chilis are now simmered. Examples in our collection include 8-Vegetable Vegetarian Chili, Crock-pot Turkey and Vegetable Chili, and Howling at the Moon Beef Steak Chili.

A New Historical Atlas By Derek Hayes
$159.95 Christmas is an excellent time to consider a very special gift book. Right now there is a great selection from which to choose. A favourite of ours at the Laughing Oyster is Derek Hayes’ British Columbia A New Historical Atlas. Derek Hayes has a passion for old maps and what they can reveal about the past. This comprehensive historical atlas contains over 900 maps, brought together by Hayes to tell the story of British Columbia. It is a story of exploration and exploitation, of fur trade empires and of gold, of great power projects and development dreams. A story of the surveyors and the road builders, of the great railways – the Canadian Pacific, the Grand Trunk Pacific, the Great Northern and the Canadian Northern, the Pacific Great Eastern and the Coast to Kootenay Railway. On Vancouver Island, it was black gold – coal – that drove exploration and map making. Detailed maps of the town sites above and the coal fields below ground are included. Beginning with the first known maps of explorations and aboriginal settlements
and concluding with the Olympic torch run and the latest in GPS and satellite imagery, this British Columbia Historical Atlas is a beautifully crafted book. Many of the surveys, treaty maps, military maps, mining maps, promotional maps, real estate maps – and maps of murder – are works of art in their own right, and together with the text and photographs offer a unique and fascinating view of our province’s past.

COLD AND FLU
PREVENTION The leaves have left and it’s time to batten down the hatches for old man winter. Unfortunately, it also means that cold and flu season is upon us again too. This season is typically the busiest for pharmacists, as we are often dealing with increased antibiotic prescriptions and fielding many questions on cough and cold products. Hopefully you can gain a few helpful pointers in preventing and reducing colds in your household.
C ANCER C ARE & COMMUNIT Y PROJEC TS
Nov. 5 - 10, 2012 Comox Centre Mall
In keeping with my overall theme, the best way to prevent colds from wrecking your winter is prevention. There are many ways to help prevent colds, and most of them are just plain common sense. The single best way to reduce your chances of getting sick is washing your hands! Although I could not find any specific statistics, there are numerous studies have shown that proper hand washing significantly reduces the risk of getting sick. Hand washing should particularly be done before and after eating, after using a washroom, after handling money and after blowing your nose or sneezing/coughing on your hands. Some tips for proper hand washing are: • Use plain (NOT antibacterial) soap – antibacterial soap may actually increase the risk of developing drug resistant bacteria; • Scrub with the soap for 20-30 seconds then rinse with warm water for 10 seconds; • When scrubbing, make sure you get in between the fingers and in the fingernails too; • Hand sanitizers with an alcohol content greater than 60% are effective, however hand washing with water should be done at the earliest opportunity.
9:30am-5:30pm
Vaccinations are another important prevention measure. Anyone with health problems or who are over age 65 should get their flu shot yearly. Whenever I recommend this, I always hear the comment “I got sick even though I got the flu shot last year!” The flu shot is NEVER 100% effective and it does NOT protect against the common cold or other viruses/bacteria. It DOES help reduce the risk of getting influenza, which can be deadly for people who have weaker immune systems. Your yearly flu shot is worth getting even if you have to pay for it as true influenza can be quite incapacitating even if you are otherwise healthy. Pneumococcal vaccinations are also recommended every 5 years for persons over 65 or for those with significant health issues (i.e lung problems or diabetes). Pneumococcal infections can be life threatening in these groups of people.
The Biggest Book Sale in the Comox Valley! Come early for best selection!
One tip if you are actually sick: Please cough/sneeze into your shoulder or upper arm (NOT your hands). This greatly reduces the chance of passing your virus along. This is one case where it’s not nice to share. Other tips include all the usual ones for healthy living: • Make sure you get adequate sleep
SPONSORS
• Drink lots of fluids (six to eight 250ml glasses per day!) • Proper nutrition (refer to the Canada Food Guide or Dial-a-Dietician) • Some exercise if possible (25-30 min of moderate activity 3 times per week)

Winter Warmers NOT JUST COTTON ANY MORE
THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD
Yes, it’s official, winter is here in all its blustery dampness. Wind, rain and cold are knocking on our doors. And while most people don’t find this pleasant to contemplate – there is one thing that you should think about right now, and that’s staying warm and comfy this winter.
LOUNGEWEAR IS THE PERFECT WAY TO DO IT. The shorts and tank top you used to run around in two months ago probably aren’t what you’re looking for now. Now is the time for long sleeves, full pants and robes. Of course, ever popular is cotton for lounge and sleepwear. Cotton flannel is the perennial choice for the ultimate warmth in winter weather, but a stretchable cotton – cotton jersey – is available too. You can find classic pyjamas, nightgowns and robes in this stretchable version of cotton and some find them extra comfortable due to the increased movement. You’ll find cotton jersey in different weaves to provide different thicknesses and levels of warmth.

And then there’s silk. Many people think silk is just for naughty underthings, but modern designs take silk from the bedroom to the living room and beyond. Polished silk, while once popular, has been joined by raw silk, which many find more comfortable as it both breathes and stretches. Light silk nighties cling to the body and won’t get tangled in the sheets when you’re sleeping.
100% Waterproof proof / Sleek look with ith a sneaker fit. Constructed with 7mm waterproof Neo-Tech o-Tech insulation with non-marking marking outsole and easy-on -on pull handles. Assorted prints and solids $135.00 0
Moreover, new silk pieces include full pants, t-shirts and more, not just for loungewear but for wear under other clothing as well. These pieces can be worn like long johns for extra warmth on the slopes and pack for travel like a dream. Silk packs into a fraction of the space that cotton does. And silk both naturally wicks away moisture from the body and dries in an instant. So don’t let the leaves falling from the trees and the necessary umbrellas get you down, just focus on staying warm and dry inside.

Are you ready? Christmas seems early this year ! Each year I do the "usual" decorations - all wrapped in tradition. This year I am going to try something new By: Judith Moore
Professional OfďŹ ces Residential 3FUBJM t $PNNFSDJBM (New and Renovations)
THE FRONT DOOR A pair of large white mittens, tips stuffed with tissue paper, greenery and holly inserted, a long Christmas ribbon to hang it with OR An old picture frame, sprayed red Christmas balls threaded with ribbon at the centre- hung with an "over the door" hanger
AROUND THE HOUSE These are D I Y - and easy 1. GLASS BALLS IN A CLEAR VASE - beautiful - hint - put a few balls in first, then an empty toilet paper roll on top fill the rest of the vase - Great look - fewer decorations needed 2. CHRISTMAS 'FRUIT' - buy 9 - 12 pieces of Dollar store faux fruit, apples, pears, etc. If they have bags of glitter* or sequins*, buy that too. Several colours or have a theme. Hardware store spray glue. Put fruit on a tray - lined with saran wrap (makes for an easy lift off - paper sticks) leaving enough room to spray on the glue and liberally sprinkling the glitter. Takes about 30 minutes to dry. Use on your mantle with Christmas ribbon or as your table centrepiece. 3. ORANGES (what??) - part of Christmas - but try this. Dry by slicing the oranges less than a 1/4 inch, place in a 200 degree oven for 3 hours, turning every 30 minutes, to dry evenly. Hang with a red or green piece of wool threaded through - or use in a centrepiece, with cinnamon sticks. A large plate for the base, layered
with greens - bundle the sticks together with red and green plaid ribbon, add the slices of oranges as well as some traditional Christmas nuts.
The next two ideas need: Elmer's Glue (for the branches and tiny ornaments) Paint brush Spray Glue* (for the trees) Fake Snow* (for the branches) A LARGE bottle of glitter* A large cardboard box A wide mouthed vase (for the branches) 4. BOTTLE BRUSH TREES - old fashioned - but versatile. Michael's* in Nanaimo sell these trees in an package of 21 - $33 - sized 3 - 8 inches. Make them festive - spray with glue and sprinkle the glitter immediately - or spray with glue and roll in the glitter that you have spread in a wide container. Add tiny ornaments and bows by gluing into the tree. Use them on the mantle, on the table or around a gingerbread house. 5. 'ICED' BRANCHES - Branches are found in the woods, or from a recently pruned fruit tree. Put the branches into the cardboard box, brush with glue, sprinkle with snow*, then glitter - turning the branches - place in a vase to dry. Hint. Spray adhesive DOES NOT work on branches. You can also do pine cones paint the glue on the tips, sprinkle snow, then glitter.
You are ready for Christmas.

Ready For Winter? 5TipsTo MinimizeThose Heating Bills With the cool nights upon us and winter just around the corner, now is the time to winterize your home and to consider ecofriendly heating alternatives to save money…and to minimize your environmental footprint. TO START THE PROCESS, DO A THOROUGH “WALK-THRU” OF YOUR HOME. 1. Check each door and window. Do you feel any cold air coming in? If so, determine if you need weatherstripping or caulk. Do you have thermal windows and doors? Replace them, if not. 2. Prevent frozen pipe damage by turning the water off in the house at each hook-up, drain hose bibs and place thermal covers on them. Or replace the spigots completely with a model that turns the water off in the house from the hose hook-up itself. 3. Clean gutters to be sure they are free of debris. Consider gutter guards if you have a lot of leaves. 4. If you have any rooms that seem colder than the rest, think about extra insulation. 5. Inspect your furnace or heat-pump filter to be sure it’s clean; replace if it’s not washable. (1152 bricks). The bricks are easy to store and are wrapped in plastic for clean, easy transport. According to the BioFlame website, burning the briquettes as fuel “closes a natural conservation cycle—on combustion, they only release as much carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere as was originally absorbed by the growing tree during photosynthesis.” The company also notes that the minimal sparking is ideal for people who camp or burn outdoor fires in dry periods. And, don’t forget about your walkways and driveway. Be sure you have salt or icemelt on hand for below-freezing weather. If you have farm animals, be sure your water heater/de-icer is in good working order before the thermometer drops.
You may also want to consider alternative heat sources. While many people burn wood or use pellets in their heating stoves, there is an all-natural product on the market that burns very hot and can be used in any non-gas fireplace or woodstove. BioFlame Briquettes, made in Chemainus, are growing in popularity with many island residents. The briquettes are made of 100% recycled sawdust. They have no artificial chemicals, produce minimal smoke and ash, and are high in energy efficiency. The bags of bricks are available in two sizes (16 or 32 briquettes). TurnYour Bedroom Into A Sanctuary relatively inexpensive décor element can also be easily changed with the seasons.
When your world feels like it’s spinning out of control or you feel there is not enough time in the day, there should be one room in your home that takes you away…a room that makes you feel like you’re on vacation. If your bedroom doesn’t “take you away,” now is the perfect time for a bedroom makeover--the perfect pick-you-up for a Comox Valley winter.
Now look at your windows. Do you have a way to block out the world and sleep in? Shades are so versatile and come in so many styles and colors. Some close from the bottom up to protect privacy but let light in; others cover doors and large windows, pulling to the left, right or center for your optimal exposure.
To start, look at your bed, which should be the focal point in the room. Start with the headboard. Is it proportional to the room? Is it cold and sterile or warm and inviting?
Do you have valances to finish off the top of your windows?
Many prefer a fabric headboard, which can be made easily to coordinate or complement your other décor and bedding ensemble; they are easy to change seasonally, as well.
What’s your lighting do for the mood in your bedroom? Nightstand and floor lamps are usually warmer than overhead lighting.
Now look at your bedding and linens. Do you have a unified look that makes you feel like you’re at a luxury hotel? Do you like lots of pillows or are you a minimalist? Shams that pick up the design of a comforter or duvet add to the décor; and fluffy throw pillows in complementary colors and patterns can add even more texture and an inviting look. Consider a throw rug to break the monotony of a solid-tone carpet or to add warmth to a non-carpeted floor. This
FEELTHE “AHH!”
Do your drapes and curtains give you the look and feel of a retreat or do they just cover your window?
Remember, too, that for less than $50, you can change the color of your walls, too. The bottomline is simple: If your bedroom doesn’t feel like a sanctuary—a place to nurture the soul and relax—then consider a makeover. For less than $500, you can change the entire look of your bedroom, and you’ll be glad you did. Clairmont Custom Draperies & Décor offers free in-home consultations to help you make your room everything you want it to be.
