Exhibit helps hand down memories

A

n art exhibit in Colwood brought together youth and senior artists to reflect on the impact of war and on the role of automotive in military history.

The exhibit, at Saunders Subaru from Nov. 1 to 3, brought together art from Juan de Fuca 55+

Activity Centre art programs and art students from Belmont secondary school.

All of the drawings in the show feature vehicles from the two World Wars. Some come with personal stories, while other paintings are a result of a general interest followed by research.

Lesley Brennand, an art teacher at the activity centre, drew an original Volkswagen Beetle, which was first built in 1938 in Nazi Germany.

A sea of change B.C. Ferries at ‘tipping point’ of affordability, says commissioner

I

f there is one collective cry from the three major stakeholders in B.C. Ferries, it is this: Things need to change.

The independent B.C. Ferry Commission, the two-man office tasked with providing oversight and regulation to North America’s largest ferry service, has declared a “tipping point” in affordability, recognizing that the $2.5 billion needed for ferry replacement over the next decade needs to be accompanied by a longer-term vision than business as usual.

In the meantime, fares will continue to rise – capped at 12 per cent over the next three years – to help meet the bottom line in the wake of a 13-year low in vehicle traffic and a 21-year low in ridership.

Many of the residents who depend on the 25 coastal routes believe it’s an issue of simple mathematics: lower the fares and ridership will increase.

Tempting as this theory seems, it doesn’t tell the entire story.

B.C. Ferry Commissioner Gord Macatee spent most of last year consulting with more than 30 coastal communities before setting the maximum fare increases and instructing the ferry corporation to find $54 million in efficiencies.

While he sympathizes with the added financial burden to taxpayers, he agrees that there is a “huge risk” with cutting fares to stimulate higher ridership.

Macatee said the drop in marine ferry traffic is roughly equivalent to that seen on free-of-charge B.C. inland ferries, those that connect the highway system throughout the Interior.

And the much-publicized CoastSaver program, where weekend fares on the major routes were reduced in May and June, failed to produce any increase in ridership from the previous year.

“It’s hard to refute the fact that a 30-percent price reduction didn’t result in any lift in ridership,” he said. “And if ridership doesn’t rise, the company is in trouble.”

Since 2003, provincial legislation binds the publicly owned but privately run corporation to deliver a minimum number of sailings on each route.

Hours of operation, minimum capacity and frequency and number of trips are all dictated by a core service agreement between B.C. Ferries and the province.

Macatee said fuel savings can still be found with careful scrutiny. B.C. Ferries saved 700,000 more litres of fuel last year by making simple changes like reducing idling time and reducing the speed of ships.

It prevents the corporation from easily reacting to lower ridership, but it’s meant to ensure the corporation stays anchored in its founding notion.

“People still need to have the ability to get to work, get to school, buy their groceries, get their supplies,” Macatee said.

Transportation Minister Mary Polak announced on Monday that a formal public consultation on the future of coastal ferry service will run until Dec. 21. It will result in $30 million in service cuts over the next three years.

“We intend to make (the consultation) as broad as possible,” she said.

Town hall meetings are being held in 30 communities across B.C., and feedback forms can also be submitted online at coast ferriesengagement.ca.

Polak’s office has already identified $9 million in sailing cutbacks on the major routes between Vancouver Island and the mainland.

That means another $21 million must be trimmed from among the money-losing minor routes of the Gulf Islands and the

North.

“It’s very difficult to take a look at specific sailings and try to surgically make changes to ones that are not reaching their capacity, because you have issues like labour agreements and fuel costs. You can’t simply flip a switch and have a ferry turn on and off,” Polak said.

Eighty per cent of B.C. Ferries’ expenses are comprised of fuel and labour costs.

The price of marine diesel has risen nearly 150 per cent since 2004 and ate up $121 million of the 2012 budget. The volatility of the “dirty” fuel compelled Macatee to push B.C. Ferries on alternative energy sources.

“Liquified natural gas (LNG) is abundant in B.C.; it’s very low-cost and environmentally superior,” he said.

The company estimates it would reduce its fuel costs by 60 per cent with a switch to LNG. But the expense and time commitment of retrofitting mid-life ships means that

Public outcry over ex-CEO David Hahn’s salary, bonuses and pension prompted a legislative change that means new executives will receive compensation more in line with senior public sector managers.

B.C. Ferries’ executive team was trimmed from 17 to nine positions in 2008, but unionized labour positions aren’t likely to change, with only a 0.5-per-cent reduction in employee numbers since 2003.

Transport Canada regulations require a set number of employees on each vessel based on maximum passenger capacity, which is a big factor in the $257 million spent each year on labour.

“A lot of people acknowledge that there’s a lot of overtime ... and that’s one area that needs to be looked at, along with management,” said Gary Coons, NDP ferry critic.

While management positions have ballooned from 261 to 594 in the past nine years, it doesn’t tell the entire story.

“These are positions such as senior chief engineers, chief engineers and senior chief stewards, so they are not new positions to the company,” said B.C. Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall.

The management jobs were converted from union to exempt positions, she said.

Polak said she has been impressed with the ideas coming forward from coastal communities in the early stages of consultation, particularly with developing a longterm vision for B.C. Ferries.

“Many of them have already been giving a lot of thought to potential solutions, ideas like the use of water taxis or the use of passenger-only ferries,” she said.

Seeley was knocked unconscious by the blast. When he awoke he managed to get off the ship, the last man to do so. Out of a crew of 93, 53 died in the attack. Seeley got emotional as he told his story and said exhibits like this are important to remind people of the sacrifices made.

Police seek man with warrants Police are looking for Derek Ernest Fast, 26.

A large amount of stolen property was recovered from a Colwood home by the Regional Crime Unit, Nov. 1.

Recovered items included a sawed-off shotgun and various items believed to be stolen from homes and cars. Police are working to identify the stolen property and contact owners.

The investigation was sparked after a high profile break-andenter in Mill Bay, Oct. 26. RCU

tracked a stolen credit card after it was used at the 17 Mile Pub in Sooke.

A prolific offender, Fast had been monitored by the RCU. Police spotted him leaving a Colwood home in the 500 block of Stornoway Drive.

He was driving a car, and he has a Canada-wide driving prohibition.

When police pursued, they said, Fast fled on foot near the intersection of Jacklin and Sooke roads.

Halloween night relatively quiet Rollover car crash shuts down Malahat temporarily Kyle Wells News staff

It was a relatively quiet Halloween night on the West Shore, according to RCMP. After a busy weekend, West Shore RCMP faced a typical number of calls on Halloween itself.

The night was not without incidents, however.

At about 7:30 p.m. RCMP were called out to a crash on the Malahat. One car flipped on a median near near Finlayson Arm Road. The driver, who was travelling southbound in a fourdoor sedan, said he was momentarily blinded by the headlights of a vehicle travelling in the other direction and lost control of his vehicle.

West Shore RCMP Acting Sgt. Kathy Rochlitz said conditions were poor, with fog and wet roads. The driver hit the ditch, careened across the lane and hit the median.

The driver was taken to hospital but did not have visible injuries. The southbound lane was closed to traffic for one to two hours.

West Shore RCMP also caught three people driving under the influence of alcohol, one on the Trans-Canada Highway and two others in Langford.

Roadside suspensions were issued.

“From midnight to midnight we had 82 calls for service,” Rochlitz said. “It was a consistent night for us. I wouldn’t say that what we experienced was specific to the night of Halloween.”

Rochlitz said that fireworks bylaws put in place by municipalities help lighten the RCMP’s load for Halloween.

“Putting that bylaw in place is a deterrent,” Rochlitz said. “If people want to go and do those fireworks there’s processes have to happen.” kwells@goldstreamgazette.com

is Honour Steven Point may look on his years in Victoria with satisfaction, but he won’t miss living in the stately Government House.

“This is fancy, but you’re also in a jail here,” he said with a chuckle. “The gates are locked and there’s security here all the time.”

After five years as B.C.’s 28th lieutenant governor, Point is eager to return home with his wife, Gwendolyn Point.

Over his term as the Roszan Holmen Queen’s representative in Reporting B.C., he’s accumulated “too much” mileage travelling to Chilliwack once or twice a month to visit family.

“It’s nice to go home,” he said. “Our grandchildren are there, all our kids are there.”

Once back, he hopes to resume his post as a provincial court judge – “knock on wood,” he said, with another soft chuckle.

Among Victoria locals who got the chance to know him, Point has garnered a reputation for being warm and down-to-earth – and for being a great storyteller. He particularly had a knack for drawing in young people with funny tales from his own youth.

“Talking to kids is not easy,” he said at his office, before his departure ceremony at the legislature.

The best way to engage them is to talk about your own life and make sure you don’t come off as too important, he added.

“They ask all sorts of questions. They want to know if you sleep in a golden bed. It’s very funny.”

In particular, he inspired aboriginal youth, as B.C.’s first aboriginal lieutenant governor.

“We get a lot of excitement when we get out to First Nations communities,” Point said. “I think it gives a lot of pride to the kids.”

The children also write him letters.

“His Honour personally responded to literally thousands of letters back of forth,” said Michael O’Connor, who got to know Point well as president of the Government House Foundation. “He takes the time to talk with everyone.”

The role took a bit of getting used to, however.

“I think it was unexpected when he was asked (to take the job) and he had to think about it. I think he was a bit apprehensive at first (but) I watched him become more relaxed in his role,” O’Connor said. “He is very engaging with people of all walks of life … and he makes everyone relax.”

Victoria MLA Carole James also attended many events with Point. One of her favourite memories happened just a few months ago, during a ceremony dedicated to a new totem pole outside Government House.

“He saw that some of the little kids were having trouble seeing,” James said. “He said, ‘this event is about the future and supporting tradition, so I want to ask all the children to come on up to sit on the rocks’ … It was like watching the pied piper.”

When it came time to pull the ropes to raise the totem pole, he invited the kids to join him.

“For me, that said it all,” James said. “He brought a human side to what can be seen as a reserved, formal position.”

Point also accomplished many good deeds for the province during his appointment. Key among them is his literacy program.

“That’s worked out to be a great thing,” Point said. The program started by bringing books out to communities and expanded to bring entire libraries to towns with no road access.

Settling on literacy was a bit of a process of elimination for Point. As the Queen’s representative, “you can’t comment on poverty. You can’t comment on education,” he said. “The programs that you can be involved in have to be outside the political arena, so I decided to do literacy, which is a pretty neutral kind of thing.”

While Point has not been free to speak his mind on political issues he has held political power. It’s a role Canadians don’t understand well, said Point. On top of his attending ceremonies and hosting dignitaries, the lieutenant governor wields real power, he said.

“Most people are unaware that the government cannot introduce its own money bills,” he said. “(The premier) has to come to the Queen because it’s the Queen’s money.”

Prorogation is a good example of that power. Recently Ontario Lieutenant Governor David Onley faced criticism for agreeing to prorogue parliament.

Point wouldn’t comment on Onley’s decision, but said, “If the lieutenant governor has to make a tough decision, he doesn’t have anybody to talk to – not even the Queen.”

Art made for space travel Charla Huber News staff

It came from outer space.

Not a Martian or an android, it’s spaceship armour.

Metchosin potter Robin Hopper proudly holds a ceramic painting explaining the ceramic component is the same material that covers spaceships.

“I am using a ceramic product that was developed for space shuttles as a heat shield,” Hopper said, adding it can withstand temperatures up to 1,500C. “It looks and feels like porcelain, but it’s quite different,” he said, loudly banging the material on his table. “It is very strong, much stronger than porcelain.”

The material has a ceramic substrate, he explained. About three years ago Hopper contacted a company in Colorado who makes the material for the space shuttles. He asked what they do with the leftovers. When he was told they end up in the trash he asked if the company would mail him some.

“Two months later I sent them a glazed painting,” Hopper said.

“They were blown away. Now they have a secondary industry selling (the materials to artists.)”

“I had been looking for something like this for 50 years,” said Hopper who has played with clay since he was three years old. “Now with my health problems I can’t hold a brush for a long time.”

Hopper, 73, grew up in London and during the Second World War he remembers the city being bombed.

“The bombs exploded and there were giant pits of clay, I started to play in the bomb craters when I was three,” Hopper said.

Real value in real estate S

ince last summer, Canadians have had to follow tighter lending criteria in order to purchase a home.

The change was meant to cool off hot housing markets in major cities like Toronto and Vancouver.

It’s these kind of strict regulations that protect us from the drastic sub-prime-mortgage delinquencies and foreclosures that we saw in the U.S. over the past few years.

The regulations meant banks could only offer loans up to a maximum of 80 per cent of a property’s value, down from 85 per cent previously. Along with that, amortization for government-insured mortgages dropped from 30 years to 25 years, after falling from a high of 40 years in 2008.

The changes meant Canadians would borrow less over a shorter period of time, thereby lowering the amount of interest over the life of the loan.

The changes also meant homeowners would have to make higher mortgage payments on a monthly basis in order to pay for their loan.

The old adage, what goes up, must come down is coming true as we see the correction in the marketplace, with sales beginning to slow and housing prices drop in Victoria.

As many in the financial industry will tell you, the housing market is a good snapshot of the local economy. We can see that any extra cash new homeowners have is now tied up in mortgage payments, rather than making its way into local businesses.

To put the numbers in better perspective, over the past decade Victoria home prices increased by 128 per cent, so a two per cent drop in the last year is nothing to worry about if you’ve owned your home for a while.

As recently as 20 years ago, an average-priced home in Greater Victoria sold for $222,415. Last month that same house sold for $576,720.

Anyway you look at it, owning a home in Greater Victoria is still a good investment in the long term.

The challenge now for sellers and first-time buyers is in the short term. Sellers may have to wait longer and expect lower bids, while buyers will have to lower their expectations, too.

Here in North America’s marijuana mecca, installers have encountered many meter bypasses, wired up to steal hydro and conceal high consumption for grow ops. In addition to being illegal, they are a fire hazard that are removed when discovered.

Installers also find more sophisticated cases of hydro theft.

Removing the mechanical meter reveals a hole cut in the back of the case, so the dials can be turned back to hide a grow op’s power consumption. No wonder some people want to lock them down.

Of course all of this is defeated by a smart grid system, so the growers and other crooks are angry.

A B.C. Hydro official told me about one case where a user was told he had a bypass, and that it was being removed. His bill went from next to nothing to a reasonable level.

The customer complained to the media, falsely inflating the amount of his bill and blaming an inaccurate smart meter.

The bad news is nothing has really changed.

The West Shore Poppy Fund has been dwindling. This may be the last year the Legion mails out poppies to thousands of houses because people just aren’t mailing in donations.

This year the legion mailed out about 16,000 poppies.

All of the money raised through poppy sales on the West Shore will stay on the West Shore helping local veterans and youth. Last year the campaign raised nearly $80,000.

It’s been a struggle to get enough volunteers to sell the poppies in front of local businesses.

Readers respond: Malahat, sewage CRD sewage ads waste taxpayer money The CRD has started to run expensive advertisements in local newspapers and these ads promise that a presumably more expensive insert will appear on Nov. 14, the same day that the Core Area Liquid Waste Management committee will be meeting.

A referendum in 1992 and subsequent radio polls have shown about two-thirds of the citizens of the CRD to be consistently opposed to land-based secondary sewage treatment.

Many people ask why we don’t have another referendum on this project.

In 2004 the regional liabilities regulation was passed that prevented regional districts from obtaining the approval of electors. With the stroke a pen, this democratic right was simply stripped away from us for obvious reasons.

Those of us who see nothing but flaws in the land-based secondary sewage treatment plan proposed by the CRD are appalled at the idea of the CRD using our own tax dollars to run these newspaper and radio ads to convince us otherwise. This is disgraceful.

This is clearly a case of “theatre and perception triumphing over science” as Nils Jensen said. Why do the tree hugging birkenstockers pick and choose their science?

No, there has not. But I think we should just pump out threequarters of a billion dollars into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and

But, perhaps the factor that seems to gather the most votes is excessive speed.

Given the years that have passed, with oodles of conversation and debate, and road patching, why hasn’t the problem been better resolved?

And why is the removal of photo radar seldom if ever mentioned as the dumb act it was, along with the guy who did it?

As I recall, Gordon Campbell promised its removal as a campaign commitment – and that’s what he did when elected.

New Lieutenant Governor a ‘steward of the land’ Tom Fletcher Black Press

Merritt-area rancher Judith Guichon was sworn in Friday as B.C.’s 29th Lieutenant Governor.

Guichon and her husband Bruno Mailloux were welcomed to the B.C. legislature with a blessing by Lottie Lindley, elder of the Upper Nicola Band of the Okanagan Nation.

Guichon, 65, succeeds Steven Point, who completed his term Thursday. She is the second female Lieutenant Governor in B.C. history, following former MP Iona Campagnolo, who preceded Point.

In her inaugural speech, Guichon said she will carry on the work of her predecessors, including support for literacy and reconciliation with aboriginal people in B.C. As owner of the historic Gerard Guichon Ranch on the shore of Nicola Lake and a former president of the B.C. Cattlemen’s Association, she vowed to continue her work as a “steward of the land.

“Many of the first ranchers, including the Guichon family, came to British Columbia 150 years ago, chasing their dreams of gold,” Guichon said.

“As I tell the students who visit the ranch, they came for the gold, but they stayed for the grass.”

So far, none of the costs involved are overly onerous, but the resolution to the cost-sharing debate could prove significant to the region as the aging trestle continues to decay.

For its part, the province refused to comment to Black Press on the situation.

“It’s encouraging that talks are underway,” said Ben Isitt, a Victoria councillor. “The bottom line has to be ensuring connectivity.”

While Isitt also sits on the CRD parks committee, he said he hasn’t reviewed the cost-sharing issue in this capacity.

“If it’s the province’s asset, it would seem the province should be responsible, particularly since the upgrades have to do with marine navigation,” he said.

Another solution to the unfunded project is to stop lifting the bridge for taller sailboats, Rushton said.

The CRD only receives requests to lift the bridge once or twice a year, he said. Each lift requires six CRD employees and a boat to manually lift the plank, at an estimated cost of $280 per lift.

“That might be an option for consideration,” Rushton said, adding the decision to close the bridge rests with the federal government. “As I understand it, it would involve consultation with a lot of different par-

ties that might be impacted.”

It’s an idea that concerns John Sanderson, chair of the Esquimalt Victoria Harbour Society.

“If it’s going to take some money, we’ve got to think about it. The basic principle is you don’t cut off vessel access,” he said.

The real problem is a lack of maintenance of the trestle, added Sanderson.

“Governments don’t seem to realize you have to look after things until it all falls apart. Then we’ll start complaining about spending $100 million on a new bridge,” he said, referencing ongoing public debate surrounding the lifting Johnson Street Bridge, not too far away from the trestle. rholmen@vicnews.com

Blind runner awaits discrimination decision The blind runner who filed a human rights complaint against the Victoria International Running Society and the race director of the Times Colonist 10 K is awaiting a decision after a four-day hearing finished recently.

Graeme McCreath, a 65-year-old Saanich physiotherapist, filed the discrimination complaint against the VIRS and race director Jacqui Sanderson, after he was denied his request to start the race early to avoid heavy congestion. The popular road race typically sees 10,000 entrants.

McCreath, who has a prosthetic left eye and only light-perception in the other, has, with the assistance of a guide, run six of the Times Colonist 10K events, including races spanning 2006 until 2010.

“We should never have had to go to this situation,” McCreath said. “I’ve been pretty devastated.”

McCreath has requested compensation for loss of dignity and missed work during the hearing.

National health survey coming to capital region Canada’s most extensive physical health survey is coming to Victoria.

On Nov. 6, 360 residents of Greater Victoria will be contacted for interviews about health and lifestyle.

The Canadian Health Measures Survey aims to capture a broad portrait of the health of Canadians by gathering baseline data on a variety of concerns, including cardiovascular health, nutrition, chronic and infectious diseases and exposure to environmental contaminants.

The national survey began in January and will visit 16 sites across the country over a two-year period. It will collect data from 5,700 Canadians aged three to 79.

“The CHMS is unique in Canada in that it brings together self-

reported information from household interviews with measurable physical data collected from participants later at a mobile clinic,” said Richard Stanwick, chief medical health officer for the Vancouver Island Health Authority Individuals participating in the survey will be asked to visit a mobile clinic set up at the University of Victoria starting Nov. 21 and running five weeks.

Those who consent will have several measurements taken, including blood pressure, muscular strength, lung function and hearing. Blood and urine samples will also be taken.

A day after the news broke out across Victoria that the Fort Cafe is set to close, its owners were able to laugh about the good times they’ve shared at the eclectic arts hub, one of the last easily accessible venues for up-and-coming performers of all kinds.

When Benji Duke, Melissa Byrnes and Jon Perkins – who had worked together at the previous Fort Cafe in the same location – purchased the business in 2007, the café looked nothing like the groovy basement haunt that exists today. Along with donated labour from friends and family, the trio replaced its drop ceiling, bisecting wall and cafeteria-style array of disused fridges with pea green walls and board games, not unlike your dad’s basement where you can hang out and feel good, Duke said.

A key feature: the stage – an element of Byrnes’ interior design that Duke couldn’t help but constantly admire when it was built a year after the business opened.

“It was a treat,” Perkins said of the early days after the stage was installed. “It was amazing. (Duke) would just hang out with it.”

B.C.’s 85 MLAs have begun disclosing their travel expenses, posting total amounts charged on their government-issued credit cards but not the details of where they drove, flew or dined.

The B.C. legislature’s internal finances are being dragged into the 21st century in response to a damning report from Auditor General John Doyle released in July. The audit found that MLA credit card bills were being paid without receipts, and the legislative assembly hadn’t produced financial statements despite a 2007 recommendation from the previous auditor general.

In response, the Legislative Assembly Management Committee, chaired by Speaker and Penticton MLA Bill Barisoff, began holding its meetings in public. Two new financial officers were hired to address what Doyle described as “pervasive deficiencies” in financial accountability of legislature operations.

The management committee authorized the first release last Wednesday, showing six months of expenditures to the end of September. The report breaks spending down in categories, including accommodation, daily meal allowance and travel.

MLAs representing districts farthest from Victoria generally run up the highest expenses. Leading the pack in the first report is Robin Austin, NDP MLA for Skeena, with $53,606 in expenses from April to September.

MLA expenses are to be posted quarterly from now on at www.leg.bc.ca/mla/remuneration/ travel_expenses.htm where the first reports are posted.

Cabinet minister travel expenses are reported separately on the B.C. government’s “open government” website initiated by Premier Christy Clark.

Local craft brewers are like a family Behind the bar in a tasting room at Vancouver Island Brewery, a row of pub-style draw handles feature some of the company’s best-known beers: Hermann’s Dark Lager, Sea Dog Amber Ale, Spyhopper Honey Brown.

In front of the taps sits a long row of smaller handles. Except they aren’t taps – they’re national and provincial awards the company won for its varied collection of beers.

Vancouver Island Brewery, the Island’s oldest craft brewery – the industry term for small-batch operations Don Descoteau – has won many accolades Biz Beat for its beers since it began brewing in 1984. But that industry pedigree isn’t a card the company necessarily feels comfortable playing, says sales manager Rob Ringma.

He considers competitors that have emerged locally in recent decades – successful retailers such as Phillips and Lighthouse and brew pubs like Spinnakers, Canoe and Swan’s as “brothers in the growing family of craft beer manufacturers.�

Vancouver Island Brewery has been invigorated, Ringma says, by the healthy craft beer market locally. In keeping with the creativity that abounds in the industry, the company continues to experiment with seasonal brews that surprise the palette and give consumers a flavourful alternative for food pairings. “Doing unique and interesting beers is something we love doing,� says Ringma, who has been in the business 15 years. “It’s nice to be ‘pillars of the craft brewing industry,’ but it’s also fun to work in a place where you have a passion.�

The Belmont Bulldogs ascension through the high school football ranks continued with a gutsy 30-22 road win over the Seaquam Seahawks on Saturday.

Playoffs are next for the AA Bulldogs, who finished the regular season second place in the Southern Conference with four wins and one loss.

“Our staff is extremely proud of these kids and their hard work. Belmont continues to develop its identity as a tough, physical team on both sides of the ball that wears opponents down,” said J.C. Boice, the team’s offensive co-ordinator.

Spartans washed out against Bears Midget Spartans ready for playoffs Travis Paterson News staff

Sunday’s match between the Victoria Spartans and visiting North Surrey Bears ended in a flood of disappointment for the hosts as the Bears won 16-10 at Westhills Stadium in Langford.

It was the final game of the midget (ages 16 to 18) Vancouver Mainland Football League regular season. The Spartans finish tied for third with four other clubs at seven wins and three losses, but look to have the edge as the official third place team with wins over the Chilliwack Giants and Cowichan Bulldogs, also 7-3.

Twelve of the league’s 14 teams qualify for the playoffs, with the top four earning a bye.

“For now it looks like a first round bye this weekend and a home quarterfinal on Nov. 18 (at Westhills Stadium),” said Spartans coach Dave Shortt, although there was a slim possibility that status could change.

It wasn’t the ideal way to end the regu-

lar season but the Spartans can hold their heads high with just three losses.

The Bears (6-4) snapped a three game losing streak with the win.

“It was a tough one to lose, a hard fought game,” said Spartans coach Paul Mulholland.

“North Surrey came prepared, probably hungry because they’d lost three in a row. We might have peaked a little emotionally last week beating the (previously undefeated) White Rock Titans.

That was such a big game.”

North Surrey scored first on Sunday, a touchdown and conversion to go up 7-0 in the first quarter.

Spartans kicker Mike Peverelle hit a 26-yard field goal to make it 10-3. Derek Morgan capped a drive by the Spartans when he ran it in from the two-yard line to make it 10-7 for the home side.

But North Surrey clawed back with a touchdown in the third quarter, though the two-point conversion was foiled by the Spartans’ defence.

A field goal for the Bears made it 16-10 at the end of the third quarter.

And then it rained.

Flash floods tested the high quality artificial turf, which held solid beneath

the players, soaked as it was.

Under the pelting rain, and with the two-minute warning having sounded, receiver Taylor Young nearly stole the game for the Spartans.

Quarterback Lowell MacDonald’s 20-yard pass bounced from the hands of an unknown player right into the arms of Young on the sideline. Young scrambled to midfield and looked like he would score when he was brought down at the two-yard line, a 50-yard gain.

Unlike their earlier touchdown, this time the Spartans couldn’t finish the play. They exhausted all three downs without crossing the goal line.

“We weren’t able to punch it in,” Mulholland said.

The game marked the return of Spartans quarterback Brett Johnson, who played a few minutes as he’s on the mend from a broken leg suffered early in the season. His replacement, MacDonald, who has done an admirable job this season, was suffering an ankle injury on Sunday. Both are question marks should the Spartans host a playoff game this weekend. sports@vicnews.com

A pair of Victoria products will represent Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge in Nova Scotia this week.

Defenceman Nolan de Jong (1995) of the Victoria Grizzlies and forward Wade Murphy (1993) of the Penticton Vees will face the Czech Republic on Tuesday and Russia on Wednesday.

Both games are at noon, and are streamed online at Hockeycanada.ca.

De Jong and Murphy are joined by former Grizzly Evan Richardson (1994) of the Powell River Kings.

The Grizz (12-6-1) and the league-best Vees (13-3-2) have met twice this season, with the Grizz prevailing in overtime both times. Murphy scored for the Vees in both games and is the top scorer in the B.C. Hockey League with 10 goals and 16 assists in 15 games.

In their last meeting, Oct. 27, Leo Fitzgerald pounced on a rebound and chipped it over Vees goalie Chad Katunar (a Victoria native) to give the Grizzlies a 3-2 win in double OT. Murphy and de Jong are committed to well reputed NCAA programs for 2013-14, Murphy to the University of North Dakota, de Jong to the University of Michigan.

Last year Victoria’s Wes Myron, then of the Grizzlies, represented Canada West at the Junior A Challenge and won gold. Madison Dias also represented the Grizzlies at the challenge.

On Friday the Grizzlies lost 3-1 to the Cowichan Capitals. This weekend the Grizz visit West Kelowna and Prince George.

Charges dropped from youth hockey incident involving Braves RCMP will not pursue charges from a youth ice hockey incident Sept. 23 at Nanaimo’s Frank Crane Arena.

One player from the AA bantam Saanich Braves (ages 13-14) suffered a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding caused by an alleged spear from the stick of a Nanaimo player.

“On Oct. 20, Saanich Minor Hockey Association presented (the Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association) with letters from the parents of two players who were injured by a Nanaimo player during the course of the game and VIAHA suspended the player,” said a Saanich minor hockey release.

Srivastava will scout for the Minnesota Twins, covering the local region for the Twins’ Canadian scout.

In 2010, Srivastava was named Baseball Canada’s coach of the year and is currently the general manager for the Victoria Eagles Baseball Club.

“The Twins are convinced having one of their scouts based in B.C. gives them a leg up in identifying our local talent,” Srivastava said in an Eagles release.

DR. William Fisher Dryden, Bill December 18, 1941 - October 25, 2012 Bill was unexpectedly taken from us amid the trees of the west coast. Bill was predeceased by his mother and father (Mary and Thomas Dryden). Left to forever mourn his loss and treasure his memory are his beloved wife of 30 years Angela, his children Anna (Dave), Colin and Gillian (David) and his precious grandson Jackson, his sister Dorothy Steven (Bruce), extended family and many, many friends.

Our lives were richer and the world brighter for his being.

Bill was born in Scotland and that will be his ďŹ nal resting place in the hills overlooking Cove and Loch Long. Bill attended Glasgow/Strathclyde University, where he earned his PHD in Pharmacology. He retired to Sooke from the University of Alberta, where he was a world renowned and respected teacher, professor and researcher. Bill was an avid bagpiper, gardener, model train enthusiast, Presbyterian, history buff, reader, news junkie, volunteer and traveler but mostly he a family man, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, uncle, nephew and brother as well as a true friend to all who knew him.

He will be remembered by his friends and family for his sense of humor kindness, wit and wisdom.

My dearest Bill you were surrounded by love in life and you gave so much to so many. You are forever safe in my heart.

A memorial for Bill will be held on November 10th at 2:00 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church in Sooke with reception to follow. A hearty welcome to all who knew him.

Bear Mountain celebrates Halloween with family fun A thousand people from the West Shore and beyond gathered for a fabulous and ghostly Halloween night of treats and fireworks last week at the Westin Bear Mountain.

This free family celebration was the first of several events that this mountain community plans to host throughout the year.

Holding his daughter, master carver Carey Newman watched as 100 volunteers heaved on lines, slowly lifting his Thunderbirdcapped totem to the sky.

When crews secured the 7.9-metre totem to the ground and it took its place outside the Victoria Native Friendship Centre in Saanich, the 37-year-old artist could finally see his work as it was meant to be – upright in the world. He could also finally sleep.

“It was barely enough time. I worked through the night last night, and worked through the night before,” Newman said. “Then just before the rise, I noticed part of a figure’s nose had no paint.”

After six weeks of frenetic work and minutes before the totemraising ceremony, Newman dabbed on the final spots of black.

Following a ceremony led

by Kwakwaaka’wakw Nation elders, scores of young people braved the rain to pull ropes in a choreographed lift that went off without a hitch.

The totem represents the Kwakwaaka’wakw Nation and sits near a pole installed last year representing the Coast Salish, also carved by Newman. A third, planned for next year will represent the third

major First Nation family of the Island, the Nuu-chah-nulth.

“This is one of the most important cultural events we have here,” said Bruce Parisian, executive director of the Victoria Native Friendship Centre. “(Totems) are symbols of what happens in our community.”

Both totem poles are cut from an 800-year-old cedar donated by the Kwakwaaka’wakw people. Carving the totem was an integral part of the Eagle project, a job and education readiness program for youth and young adults at the centre. About 70 youth helped carve.

The totem depicts a frog and a double-headed serpent on the bottom, wolves up the side, a mother and child, a whale, a bear and a Thunderbird (eagle) at the peak. Newman calls it “Na’ mima,” meaning “people of one kind.”

He says the totem was an intensely personal project and tells his family story. Newman took inspiration too, from his greatgreat grandfather Charlie James, a famed carver who helped teach Mungo Martin, himself famous for his collection of totems outside the Royal B.C. Museum.

“I took a few cues, some inspiration from the way (Charlie James) does the bear and the eagle, and the way the whale wraps around the totem,” Newman said.

Museum exhibit ponders the ends of the Earth Edward Hill News staff

For European mapmakers in the late Middle Ages, the West Coast of Canada remained the last blank spot in the map, the world’s ultimate backwater.

The B.C. Archive’s prized 1696 world map, printed for the future king of France, shows continents and oceans similar to what you might see on Google Maps – except the western half of North America, where California remains an island, and points north dissolve into nothing.

“We knew the shape of Korea, Japan, China, even Australia, but they were just getting a handle on us,” said Lorne Hammond, curator of history at the Royal B.C. Museum. “At that time the limit of knowledge is us. The west coast of B.C. is an unknown, imagined landscape.”

Penciling in that last gap of coastline helped usher in a picture of the modern world, at least from a European point of view. The long journey to get there is charted in a new exhibition at the RBCM, Envisioning the World: The First Printed Maps, 1472-1700.

The museum is displaying 30 of the world's oldest printed maps, as drawn from the private collection of Henry Wendt, a life-long collector of ancient maps, and in collaboration with the Sonoma County Museum.

The collection charts the evolution of the known geographic world, and reveals how people reconciled biblical theology, scientific thought and the world beyond the horizon.

“The first 300 years is the theologian view of the known world, and when they started to fill in the gaps,” Hammond says. “It was going from what was imagined, to religion, to myth and then to grid mathematics.”

The oldest printed map in the world, printed in 1450s in Germany but originally crafted in 150 B.C., is akin to a pie chart – Europe, Africa and Asia, neatly divided and surrounded by oceans, and linked to Noah’s three sons.

A number of world maps in the exhibit are based on the ancient work of Ptolemy, and found in the library of Alexandria during the Renaissance. A map printed in 1482 in Ulm, Germany, but conceived in 147 B.C., spans Africa, Europe and through the east to India and China.

An early innovator, Ptolemy employed a sophisticated use of latitude and longitude, and projections of a spherical earth onto a plane. A map from 1582 reveals a deeper understanding of the Earth's movement in space. At the north and south poles, cherubs push crank handles, suggesting the world spins on a axis. At the same time, it displays a popular, church inspired mythology.

“Cannibals and monsters show on the left-hand side, suggesting what might be found in the New World,” said Wendt. “If they’re not Christian, they must be monsters. It was basic logic (of the church)."

chants and missionaries helped cartographers shape the known world, and the invention of printing presses in the 1450s spread consistent and artistically appealing maps to major cities in Europe and around the Mediterranean Sea. Wendt said rich and royal families typically purchased atlases and maps for education purposes.

“They put them on the library shelves, stacked other books on them, forgot about them, and that’s how they came to be preserved for us.”
