Recognizing Tri-Cities’ Favourites

Moving to a new city is always interesting — I know, I have done it many times. This last time, however, I was moving from the relatively quiet Okanagan to a major city (actually, three cities NIGEL LARK and two villages, to be correct). I had little idea what to expect but was looking forward to the voyage of discovery. (OK, we are not going to talk about the traffic.) I love the outdoors and we have a lot of outdoors to explore in the Tri-Cities. The Traboulay PoCo Trail, Rocky Point Park, riverside trails, Buntzen Lake, Colony Farm, Minnekhada and Mundy parks — so many great places to venture. And, if you want to be more adventurous, Pinecone Burke Provincial Park awaits — but be careful up there. Even as I have explored these trails, I

have met many people who call our community home, and what a great experience that has been. Through my work here at The Tri-City News, I have come to know many people in our business community — and I have never known so many businesses giving so much help to their neighbours. I am happily astonished at the number of people who get together to help others in volunteer organizations that make sports and community events so inspiring — the amazing people who have such amazing heart and compassion and give so generously of their time to help those who need it the most. Is it what I expected when I moved here more than three years ago? No. Is it what I hoped for? Again, no. It’s much, much better than that. Take a bow, Tri-Cities. Our people make this a very special place. Nigel Lark Publisher, The Tri-City News

TRI-CITY NEWS FILE PHOTO

Welcome to Tri-Cities: The great outdoors & the giving people Outdoor recreation opportunities abound in the Tri-Cities, from parks to hiking trails to paths along the dikes that line the Pitt River.

ABOUT THIS SECTION: Welcome to The Tri-City News’ first A-List. We asked Tri-City residents to pick their favourite things about their community and they responded — big time. In weeks of online voting, hundreds of readers of The Tri-City News shared their top picks in a variety of categories, from commercial to culinary, from recreational to romantic. You’ll find the results of those votes in the listings spread throughout this 36-page special section.

On the other pages, you’ll find words from a variety of community leaders who were asked to share their thoughts on what makes the Tri-Cities a great place to live. We invite you to peruse the listings and the articles — maybe you’ll find a new favourite recreation spot or business to add to your own list. We also invite your feedback for the next edition of the A-List. Got a suggestion for a category or something else that could be covered? Email us at a-list@tricitynews.com.

Recognizing Tri-Cities’ Favourites Coquitlam has diverse cultures

Small-town charm in PoCo

Art, nature & biz in Port Moody

What makes Coquitlam such an awesome place to live? Join the people walking around Lafarge Lake on a summer evening and you’ll STEWART see it. Hands down, its Coquitlam’s diversity. We are arguably among the most diverse communities in the world. A diverse landscape, to be sure — mountains, rivers, lakes, wetlands, forests, parks and fields, and stunning natural beauty, nestled in the middle of MetroVancouver. But more importantly, a diverse population. Aboriginal peoples, plus multi-generation Canadians from English and French Canada, plus thousands of residents who chose Coquitlam from an entire globe of possibilities. The world has come here to this welcoming, accessible and inclusive community; they’ve chosen Coquitlam as their home, to build their lives and to celebrate with us the richness of their cultures, their faiths, their festivals and, yes, their foods. Add great churches, schools, arts/culture, parks, facilities, community groups and leaders, local businesses, neighbourhoods and a bright future. O Canada? Oh, Coquitlam. Mayor Richard Stewart City of Coquitlam

As someone who grew up in Port Coquitlam, I’m often amazed at the changes I’ve seen in our community over the years. With road projects such MOORE as the Coast Meridian Overpass, it’s easier than ever to get around. Many successful businesses have moved here, bringing jobs and investment. Local amenities and shopping have never been better, and our city has been won multiple awards for our innovative approach to managing waste and engaging residents through technology. But while we’ve grown, many important aspects have stayed the same. We’ve retained our small-town charm, which can be felt in our historic downtown, in our community spirit and PoCo Pride, and in long-running events such as the May Day Festival and Terry Fox Hometown Run. We’ve also protected and enhanced our beautiful natural setting while providing residents with access to an extensive park and trail network, including the 25-km Traboulay PoCo Trail. Representing the best of the past and present, Port Coquitlam remains a place I’m proud to call home. Mayor Greg Moore City of Port Coquitlam

Port Moody is surrounded by spectacular natural amenities, from the ocean to the mountains, providing limitless opportunities for our residents. CLAY A history of great planning by the city councils that keeps residents safe, preserves and enhances our natural environment, provides first-class civic amenities and encourages a diversity in housing benefits the youth and the“experienced,”with families large and small. We treasure locally-owned and -operated small businesses, where the owners are friends and neighbours, who support our community and add to our sense of pride. Great neighbours, local businesses and natural environment — residents of The City of the Arts are proud to proclaim, not only,“I’m from Port Moody”but, also,“I’m from the Tri-Cities,” where we work, live and play together across our municipal boundaries. Mayor Mike Clay City of Port Moody

The Terry Fox Foundation is proud to be a part of the Tri-Cities and the place Terry Fox called home. This is where Terry lived, where he played, where he went to school and where WHITE his dream of the Marathon of Hope became a reality. It is on these streets and in these neighbourhoods and parks where he ran before he set out on what would be a journey of historical significance where he ran into the hearts of not just those of us who call this community home but into the hearts of all Canadians. It is the passion and pride that we all feel for Terry that brings out our residents each September to volunteer and participate in Terry’s dream. The pride that the people of the Tri-Cities feel for Terry and the place they call home, the place that my husband and I call home, is humbling each year. Together with our caring and giving residents, we are working to see Terry’s dream of a world free from cancer become a reality — all because of the dream of one young man from Port Coquitlam and the people who have taken up his torch and continued his legacy for the past 32 years. Recognizing Tri-Cities’ Favourites

Our community has the fastest-growing population in the Fraser Health Region. It is also home to our hospital, Eagle Ridge. For more than 25 years, in this special place at GIOVANNETTI475 Guildford Way in Port KING Moody, the best health care is available to residents of the Tri-Cities, every day, 24/7. Our staff and volunteers tirelessly provide their time and talent to help meet each patient’s need — large or small. Many of our doctors, technicians and staff live right here in the Tri-Cities. And, the families who live here are also our donors and funding partners. These outstanding people choose to give from their hearts, investing their treasure in the healthy future of our community. Our collective efforts have positively impacted our hospital and enabled Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation to purchase 70 per cent of the new equipment needed each year at Eagle Ridge. Charlene Giovannetti-King Executive Director, Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation

Recognizing Tri-Cities’ Favourites Living in the Tri-Cities for the past 20 years has allowed me to connect with so many fantastic people. Being involved in the community and meeting so many great people within FANTILLO the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce has really increased my family’s circle of friendship. Everywhere I go in this community, I constantly bump into business acquaintances who I now consider friends. The great thing is that many of those people I deal with in everyday business also contribute so much to our community. Through coaching our kids’ sporting activities, volunteering on boards and committees, giving their time and money to charities, sponsoring events, the TriCity business community has stepped up and made this community a better place to live and work. Our motto at the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce is“Strong Business, Strong Communities.”I believe that is what our outstanding members have contributed to our community. Davide Fantillo, 2012 Chair, Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce

Recognizing Tri-Cities’ Favourites Rich heritage and a culture of giving Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody — each city offers something different and yet woven into each one are excellent schools, great parks, neighbourhood cofPOSTMA fee shops, a choice of libraries, a rich heritage and, most importantly, a culture of volunteers who give freely of their time and expertise to coach, to raise money and to help others — here and abroad. We came as immigrants to the Tri-Cities and have put down roots that will ground our sons throughout their lives, and we have all made friendships for which we are profoundly grateful. Hazel Postma, Associate Vice-President Rocky Point, External Relations atat Douglas College and 30-year resident of Tri-Cities

Recognizing Tri-Cities’ Favourites While there is no formal designation for the Tri-Cities, the cities of Port Moody, Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam are often talked about as a“community.” We are not defined by WYANT municipal boundaries, highways and bridges, or rivers and mountains. Our commitment to one another; to making things better for our neighbours; to helping people we don’t know because it’s the right thing to do — these are qualities that shape our Tri-Cities character. Our community rises to challenges; we find ways to work together to deal with tragic loss and to confront persistent and difficult issues like child poverty, addiction, homelessness and healthy child development. Here are some examples of how your generosity made a big difference last year: •Your financial donations helped Share raise 15% of our revenue. • 1,587 volunteers gave us 49,847 hours of service. •You helped us serve 65,567 people. Thank you for working with us to bring strength and support to vulnerable individuals and families.Your gifts of service humble and inspire us every day. Martin Wyant CEO, Share Family & Community Services

Recognizing Tri-Cities’ Favourites Connections, contributions

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Hidden within everyone’s life story, there is value to be shared, and people out there waiting for help through a similar experience who haven’t yet crossed the bridges, to METZ MURRAY be welcomed into a caring, connected community. The Tri-Cities is just such a community: a wonderfully unique mosaic/melting pot filled with natural beauty; accessible to nature, recreation, arts, culture, educational and economic opportunities (from agriculture to business to industry), transportation links; a place between big and small, a place to play. Mostly, the Tri-Cities is its people, focused on the value of interconnectedness and contribution, making it an ideal place to live, work and raise a family. This year alone, Tri-City Transitions Society has received more than 500 donated hours of community giving, which helps us help those we serve to strengthen family and community by breaking the cycles of abuse. This is what makes Tri-Cities residents the people they are: caring contributors continuously crafting the community fabric. Carol Metz Murray Tri-City Transitions

Recognizing Tri-Cities’ Favourites This summer, my family and I moved to the suburbs. Nobody is more surprised by this move than myself. Except, perhaps, my husband, who, for most of our months-long SARAH PAYNE search for a home, was subjected to my repeated demands that we Not. Leave.Vancouver. I’d lived in the city for nearly 20 years and found much to love — restaurants, shopping, beaches and mountains all within arm’s reach. I loved the well-stocked Italian market at the end of our Strathcona street, the changing storefronts in Chinatown and Gastown’s transformation from tacky tourist shops to hipster mecca. But the birth of our baby girl two years ago suddenly turned a lot of our favourite pastimes upside down. We quickly went from seeing many of the latest movies or settling in at comfortable seats in our favourite pub or checking out new restaurants to spending a lot more time at home. A lot. And that home — a one-bedroom townhouse — was suddenly a lot more crowded. We searched high and low in the city but the hundreds of hours we spent

TRI-CITY NEWS FILE PHOTO

The move: From big smoke to Burke Mt.

For many, Burke Mountain is the place where all that construction is happening. For former downtown dweller Sarah Payne and family, it’s now home.

combing the MLS website turned up nothing but run-down old-timers with eye-popping price tags. And then one day our ever-patient realtor told us she had a surprise, that we should keep our minds open. That surprise turned out to be a house on Coquitlam’s Burke Mountain, an area that hadn’t even been on our radar.

But there it was — everything we wanted in a home on a tree-lined, quiet street. Suddenly, we couldn’t wait to move to the suburbs. Sure, we were leaving behind our trendy neighbourhood with its growing number of boutiques, cafés and all things local/organic/fair trade (but, also, the constant wail of sirens, the battle for parking

and, sadly, the needles). But as we looked around at our neighbours, the young 20-somethings clad in such carefully crafted dishevelment, we realized it was time for a new scene. Living in the suburbs has brought a lot of changes — we still spend a lot of time at home but now our daughter gets to play in the backyard instead of on a tiny balcony. We’re getting to know other young families — many of them also refugees from the high-priced city — on our street, at our kid’s Hyde Creek swim class and at jungle gym drop-ins at the Port Moody rec centre. We’ve explored some of the trails in our Burke Mountain backyard and were wowed by the beauty of the DeBoville Slough. We’ve marvelled at the notion of so much free parking and, together as a family, we’re discovering a lot of the businesses, events and activities I’ve been writing and reading about for years. Do I miss being able to walk the seawall to Granville Island? Absolutely. But I wouldn’t trade the family-friendly vibe of our new home in the suburbs for all the tea in our old Chinatown ’hood.
