Party wreaks havoc West Shore RCMP had to shut down a party at a house on the 1100 block of Goldstream Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Police received a noise complaint just before 10:30 p.m.

They arrived to find about 100 drunk teenagers milling around outside of the residence, some cursing, others fighting.

Police broke up the party but the house had already sustained damages, including holes in the wall, graffiti and broken pictures and art.

The incident is still under investigation. No charges have been laid yet. news@goldstream gazette.com

West Shore RCMP Sgt. Max Fossum said there will be no charges laid in relation to the incident. Fossum said the 13-year-old boy’s dark clothing, combined with where he crossed the road made it impossible for the driver to see him.

Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be a factor in the crash.

“There’s no way you would have seen the pedestrian, it would have been almost impossible,” Fossum said.

On Tuesday RCMP and Langford Fire Rescue attended the call at 7 p.m. and the boy, with serious injuries, was taken to hospital

by Emergency Health Services.

Family and friends are mourning the loss of A.J. Wakeling who succumbed to his injuries after being hit by a truck.

The 13-year-old died in hospital just after 8 p.m., Oct. 25, just two days after being struck by a pickup truck near Slegg Lumber on Sooke Road, on Oct. 23.

Wakeling is survived by his mother and three brothers, including his twin. The family was struggling before this tragic event and friends say the single mother needs the help of the community.

“The focus now is on cash,” said Jean-Paul Thuot, a family friend, citing Wakeling’s mother is missing time from work and needs to still cover rent, bills and now funeral expenses.

Thuot’s 14-year-old son Sebastian was close friends with Wakeling.

“He stayed over the night at my house many times. He was a very popular kid who was friendly and funny,” Thuot said, adding Wakeling’s three brothers were always welcome at his home too.

“These are great kids and it’s not been an easy life for them,” Thuot said. “As teenagers go, those kids look you in the eye when they talk to you.”

Thuot is collecting donations for A.J. Wakeling’s family though his business Stillpoint Community Acupuncture, 102-3212 Jacklin Rd. “When tragedy befalls on members of our community we need to step up and do whatever we can,” Thuot said.

Greg Brotherson made his first appearance in the Western Communities Courthouse, Oct. 29 to face break and enter and robbery charges.

He is being charged with robbing a 77-yearold Langford man at his home early Oct. 6. The victim told West Shore RCMP he was threatened with a knife and was treated for minor injuries.

Brotherston decided to waive the right to a preliminary inquiry and the reading of charges.

His lawyer Richard Neary is to be in chambers of the supreme court in Victoria, Oct. 31 to set a date for a three-day trial. The verdict will be decided by a judge alone.

Brotherston is to be back in the Western Communities Courthouse Dec. 6 to face a manslaughter charge related to the death of Greg Brotherston Richard Green.

Green, a 57-year-old Colwood man was allegedly punched outside of the Country Rose Pub in Colwood, Oct. 8 around 8:30 p.m. He underwent emergency surgery on Oct. 9 and was put into an induced coma. He was taken off life support and died early Oct. 15.

Initially Brotherston was charged with aggravated assault, manslaughter was added after Green’s death.

Brotherston will remain in custody by consent until his next appearance via video.

He was also charged with aggravated assault, but prosecution stayed that charge on Oct. 29. charla@goldstreamgazette.com

• When choosing a costume, stay away from billowing or long trailing fabric. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so they can see out.

• Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costume.

Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of way of trickor-treaters, doorsteps, walkways and yards.

• Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.

• Tell children to stay away from open flames. Be sure they know how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire. (Have them practice, stopping immediately, dropping to the ground, covering their face with hands, and rolling over and over to put the flames out.)

Ferry routes under review RCMP offer Tom Fletcher Black Press

BC Ferries made $18.5 million profit on its busy Victoria-Tsawwassen run last year, thanks to passenger and vehicle load averaging 72 per cent.

At the other end of the scale, the long run from Port Hardy up the coast to Prince Rupert operated less than half full on average, requiring a staggering subsidy of $2,364.72 for every vehicle carried. And for every vehicle that rode the Victoria-Gulf Islands run, BC Ferries lost $60.79.

Detailed performance figures for every BC Ferries route were released Monday as the B.C. government began a consultation on how to save $26 million on operations. Transportation Minister Mary Polak said the savings are needed to balance the interests of taxpayers with ferry users, after the province increased the ferry subsidy $79.5 million over the next four years. The subsidy for this year is about $180 million, most of it from the B.C. government.

BC Ferries has been raising rates steadily for 25 years as fuel, labour and other costs increase. Polak said inland ferries that don’t charge the public have also seen declining traf-

fic, and it has been demonstrated that cutting rates doesn’t increase revenues.

“It isn’t a matter of just looking at routes that make money or don’t make money,” Polak said. “BC Ferries operates trying to provide necessary service to communities, while at the same time being a reasonable cost for taxpayers.”

BC Ferries has already cut sailings on the Duke Point to Nanaimo run, which loses an average of $50 per vehicle carried. BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan said Duke Point is a key commercial route that is also busy with visitors in summer, but it has high fuel and labour costs because it is a longer run than the other main routes.

Both Polak and former transportation minister Blair Lekstrom have said low-capacity routes have to be made more efficient.

The CPAC offers up to $500 per project. The application requirement involves projects pertaining to schools or the community, youth, seniors or at-risk populations and promote healthy lifestyles or public safety.

Recent grants went to the Juan De Fuca Senior Citizens Association, Westshore Center for Learning and Training, The Westshore Graffiti Outreach Program and The Metchosin Emergency Program.

uth King elementary school in Langford is in need of a new playground for its younger students, and the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is asking for the community’s help to make that happen.

“The playground is really approaching the end of its useful life and we’re really excited to see it get replaced,” said Morgan Evans, member of the PAC playground committee.

Ruth King has two playgrounds, one the older students tend Kyle Wells to use, and another, Reporting the one needing replacement, the younger students play on. StrongStart early learning program students, up to five years old, also use the equipment, as does the community in general.

Two designs from two playground companies are finalists for the playground.

Both are space rocket themed. The two designed were shown to students at a meet-the-teacher event, and Evans said they were pretty excited about it.

“Today’s playground equipment is meant to help develop skill sets, help develop coordination and encourage socialization,” said Evans. “There’s a lot of thought and effort that goes into these new structures.”

Other improvements to the area, such as fixing basketball nets and installing picnic tables are also in the plans.

There is no set price for a new playground and what equipment is finally purchased will depend on how much money is raised. The baseline goal is to raise $50,000, but more would be ideal, to cover the cost of the equipment and its installation.

An online auction is up and running,

with many items donated by local businesses available to bid on. Donations from local businesses to add to the auction are still gratefully accepted, as are cash donations. Donors who give $1,000 or more will be honoured on a brass plaque to be placed at the playground.

Other fundraising events are in the works including potentially a bottle drive and a car wash.

REMEMBRANCE DAY – NOVEMBER 11th Once again the time of Remembrance is just around the corner. Every year on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Canadians pause to remember in silence the thousands who sacrificed their lives fighting for freedom and democracy during the First World War (1914-1918); the Second World War (1939-1945); the Korean War (1950-1953) and those who continue to serve today.

On this Remembrance Day, November 11th, we all gather at the cenotaph at Veterans Memorial Park, and at the eleventh hour we stand with our heads bowed with thoughts and prayers for those men and women who fought and lost their lives in serving their country.

There are many, WW1, WWII, Korean, Merchant Navy, United Nations Peacekeepers and Afghanistan Veterans, who are all recognized on this day.

The Royal Canadian Legion Veterans from Langford Branch No. #91 will be attending with great pride at the Cenotaph alongside with fellow veterans, military personnel, Federal, Provincial and Municipal officials, Army, Navy and Air Force Cadet units, Boy Scouts, Girls Guides and Beavers, members of local organizations and citizens of the West Shore communities, together with everyone remembering.

What is 20/20 vision?

You may be pleased to hear that you have 20/20 vision and think you have perfect vision.

But do you?

Not necessarily. 20/20 only indicates how sharp or clear your vision is at a distance. Overall vision also includes peripheral awareness or side vision, eye coordination, depth perception, focussing ability and colour vision.

20/20 is the average visual clarity obtainable by normal healthy eyes. Since it is an average, it means that there are those that see better or worse than 20/20 and yet still have healthy eyes.

20/20 describes normal visual clarity or sharpness measured at a distance of 20 feet from an object. If you have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. If you have 20/100 vision, it means that you must be as close as 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet. In the metric system, 6/6 is the equivalent of 20/20.

The ability to see objects clearly is affected by many factors. Eye conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or eye disease influence visual acuity. Most people with vision slightly below 20/20 function very well, whereas some people who have better than 20/20 feel their vision is not satisfactory. Everybody’s visual expectations are different and satisfactory vision is far more complex than just being able to see 20/20.

If you feel your vision is not up to standard a comprehensive eye examination will identify causes that may affect your ability to see well. Optometrists may be able to prescribe glasses, contact lenses or other vision aids that will help improve your vision. If the reduced vision is due to an eye disease, the use of ocular medication or other treatment may be needed. If necessary, a referral to a specialist will be made if an eye disease is found which warrants further investigation.

The only four-to-three vote at the Oct. 9 council meeting came over the question of whether or not to move forward with a crosswalk across the Island Highway at West Shore Parks and Recreation.

In the end those in favour of the crosswalk won, but not without some debate.

Councillors Rob Martin, Shari Lukens and Teresa Harvey voted against the crossing. Martin said the basis of the disagreement is whether one considers that stretch of road a thoroughfare or as a city street.

The crosswalk will add a delay to already heavy traffic during peak times of the day. On the other had, the recreation complex is a well used facility and there isn’t a crosswalk with 250 metres of it, meaning some user cross the street illegally and dangerously.

“This is the only way that we can get in and out of Colwood,” Martin told the Gazette. “It’s our main thoroughfare. So there’s this fundamental discussion about what is (the road).”

Lukens suggested the money for a crosswalk should be put towards an overpass, but other councillors objected saying the likelihood of an overpass ever being built is unlikely, and meanwhile people will jaywalk.

Once the crosswalk is installed pedestrians will have seven seconds of the “walk” symbol, followed by 10 seconds of “don’t walk”. The planned crossing will include a countdown timer, and be divided into two sections working independently, to minimize disruption to traffic.

It’s predicted vehicles turning left onto the highway off of Wale Road may be impacted, but during the peak evening and morning hours the average added delay to drivers travelling with the traffic is estimated to be anywhere from 3.2 to 6.2 seconds.

Martin said the city is still looking into using gas tax funds to pay for the crosswalk. kwells@goldstreamgazette.com

Talk addresses retail theft issues Balance between privacy rights and store rights explained Kyle Wells News staff

When a business is faced with a shoplifter it can be tricky for the owners to know who they can tell and what information they can share without breaking any privacy laws.

For this reason the West Shore RCMP organized a series of workshops last week with RCMP Legal Services lawyer Kyle Friesen. RCMP members and business owners and managers took part in the workshops, which focused on explaining the rights of businesses when it comes to dealing with retail theft.

“The question is how can the two talk to each other legitimately and legally under the various privacy laws that apply?"

Friesen said. "It's good for businesses to realize they can legally and legitimately talk with police if there's a retail theft or shoplifting situation going on.”

One point addressed was the ability of businesses to ban people from their stores. Friesen explained businesses are private property and therefore the owners have the right to ban anyone from their store they wish to, so long as the ban does not break the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

"It's a beautiful thing. But the moment you violate that you can be banned, forever."

Friesen said some business owners are concerned over sharing information about shoplifters with other business owners,

for fear of breaching privacy rights. Friesen said the fears are unfounded and business owners can share that information, including photographs, with other store owners and not be breaking privacy rights.

Another common misconception is that police must obtain a search warrant for businesses to be able to supply them with video surveillance footage without breaking a customers privacy rights. Friesen said this is false and businesses can turn over surveillance video to RCMP upon request.

Friesen spoke of a case in Surrey where a person was caught on camera stealing clothing from a store. The store posted an image from the video in the store. The person came back, saw the photo and is now suing the store for breach of privacy.

Friesen explained the case doesn't have a leg to stand on.

"She stole a couple thousand dollars of dresses and now she's suing the store for putting her picture up?" Friesen said.

"That's absolutely absurd that they can have the guts to come forward like that."

West Shore RCMP Const. Amy Brewer said with the level of retail theft in this area educating both the police and businesses owners on these types of issues is helpful.

"Retail theft is a huge problem on the West Shore," Brewer said. "I've listened to his presentation twice now and I definately pick up things from it. … I think it was beneficial." kwells@goldstreamgazette.com

Latest quake a wake-up call The 7.7-magnitude earthquake and resulting aftershocks, based below and around Haida Gwaii, left many residents of coastal B.C. wondering what would happen next.

While the end result saw little to no damage done, even in the areas most at risk for a tsunami, we hope the province learned some lessons from this latest close call.

One of the biggest was that people need to know where to turn for their best information in the event of a potential or real disaster. Twitter and Facebook – both prone to the spread of unsubstantiated rumours – may not be the best source for accurate details, especially early on in an emergency.

The province’s emergency information website, a logical place to turn for up-to-date information along with local radio, appeared to be overwhelmed with the high volume of traffic.

That left residents of Tofino and other coastal communities on Vancouver Island, including those in Greater Victoria, worried about the potential for risk and looking for instructions.

Justice Minister Shirley Bond defended the province’s response and said the southwest coast of Vancouver Island wasn’t under immediate threat from a tsunami.

Nonetheless, people were left wondering what they should do. Part of the problem stems from a lack of understanding around the terminology used. The meaning of such terms as warning, alert and advisory could be made more clear to the average person.

The City of Victoria, for example, issued a tsunami advisory late Saturday, asking people to avoid entering the ocean and move away from beaches or docks. By comparison, residents in Haida Gwaii and the North Coast were given tsunami warnings Sunday following aftershocks from the big quake.

When it comes to emergency information, confusion in the minds of the public leads to panic, which doesn’t help facilitate an orderly response. We don’t need to get paranoid about the potential for disaster, but this latest scenario offered yet another wakeup call to at least have a plan in place before it’s too late.

Delegates rejected another motion that would have made membership in the B.C. Teachers’ Federation optional. The good news for Clark is that the 2012 convention was a highenergy, well-attended event that contradicts the notion of a party in disarray.

The bad news is, nothing has really changed.

LETTERS Politicians should scrap sewage plan to save much needed money Re: Politicos call for study on sewage treatment (News, Oct. 26) In response to article in the Gazette I firmly believe the Capital Regional District (CRD) must tell provincial and federal governments that the proposed $1 billion treatment plant for Greater Victoria is unnecessary.

Experts have all said this expenditure is not required as the present system is working fine. The CRD seems to be taking the position that nothing can be done to stop this project from going ahead.

Perhaps Premier Clark, as part of her family first agenda, can put the brakes on this project. Another suggestion for the premier is to force amalgamation of the 13 municipal governments that make up Greater Victoria as in the long run the reduction to one municipal government and elimination of the costly CRD would benefit the taxpayers.

I doubt the CRD or Premier Clark would have the will to put a stop to unnecessary expensive projects, but at least one can always hope that sanity will prevail and the billion dollar expenditure will be put on hold.

We have been to a recent meeting of the Stop a Bad Plan organization and were shocked at how little consultation and research has been done and how this socalled plan is being forced on our municipalities.

We also understood from this meeting that once we all invest in this absurd plan and it goes to completion, scientific research into new ideas on how to utilize and treat sewage most likely will render this costly plan obsolete.

Why can we not wait and do a quality impact study before we waste money, for a plan that has not been well thought out, nor makes any logical sense whatsoever?

Since Victoria councillor Geoff Young admitted that the Capital Regional District reports don’t point to an environmental emergency in the current system, but said that it is likely that damage to the marine eco-system isn’t fully understood, perhaps he should consult with experts at the University of Victoria, since they seem to fully understand the marine eco-system.

Dog owners should follow basic rules for off-leash areas I take issue with dog owners who think off-leash parks mean that they can let their dog run freely, no matter how their dog behaves.

When a dog runs full out towards me from across the park, owner calling its name to no avail, I would say that dog is not under control. When it jumps on me or harasses my dog, I would say that dog is not under control.

There is a serious lack of etiquette in our dog parks. Here are some suggestions taken from a web site called petfriendly.ca: - Always carry a leash even in a leashfree area. You never know when you may need it.

- Don’t let your dog harass other pets, people or wildlife.

- Make sure your dog has reliable recall if you allow him to run off-leash.

Don’t forget to winterize.

Anti-pipeline protests ignore B.C. residents’ need for jobs Re: Protesters target MLA offices (News, Oct. 26) The anti-pipeline protest doesn’t deserve our applause.

An emphatic ‘no’ only galvanizes one side and does little to develop jobs within this sustainability crisis. It almost certainly ensures a missed opportunity to negotiate a more equitable solution to this province’s economic struggles, whose lasting and prolonged consequences are then hard to reverse. Compromise, communication and commitment are required in industrial quantities if we are to stand a chance of finding balance.

Perhaps those who have so much time on their hands to spend clapping, chanting and carrying signs, should consider conditions for many struggling British Columbians and think up specific, achievable solutions to balance environmental concerns they have helped create, instead of protesting for the sake of protest.

Traffic lights would help slow down Malahat drivers We have all seen once again the horrible consequences of an accident on this commuter road and I cannot help wonder why traffic lights have not been considered as part of the overall solution.

I think we would all welcome comments

from our highways engineers about how viable this would be.

With traffic exiting and entering at Goldstream Park/Finlayson Arm Road, The Malahat Inn and Shawnigan Lake Road surely it would help to make drivers more attentive to their speed and road conditions if traffic was stopped at varying times. And of course making it safer at the same time for traffic using these intersections.

I believe that a lot of drivers consider the Malahat as a freeway and forget it is a rural route providing access to a lot of local residents.

Cancelled bus runs balloon across region Strike or no strike, some transit riders used to spotty service

A

s heavy rainfall covered Greater Victoria on Friday, bus riders were also hit with the worst of a transit strike.

Despite the cancellation of about 70 runs due to a ban on overtime, primarily on University of Victoria-bound routes, many riders seem to be relatively unaffected.

“They should be striking more,” remarked UVic student Justin Robetson, while on the No. 14, one of the routes which has seen the most cancellations throughout the week’s job action.

“Especially with Natalie North all the news about buying smaller Reporting buses. That seems pretty un-refuted,” he added.

The smaller, community shuttle buses are at the centre of the contract dispute between B.C. Transit and Canadian Auto Workers local 333.

When the no-overtime job action began Oct. 22, B.C. Transit cancelled about 20 runs across the region. By Friday, that number ballooned to about 70 runs.

“I don’t think that if you’re going to be at 70 runs cancelled, you’re not going to have some kind of an impact,” said Ben Williams, CAW local 333 union president. “It’s very unfortunate, but it’s directly affecting the students who we work very closely with. … It’s a very unfortunate side effect of our job action and not something we wanted it to get to.”

According to the union, 16,000 students were left behind at bus stops last month before the start of the job action, which also has drivers wearing their street clothes instead of uniforms.

UVic Students’ Society director of external relations Lucia Orser said the anxiety around the cancellations has had just as much impact on students as spotty service before the strike – a reality which she says students on busier routes have already grown accustomed.

“One thing we’ve been cautioning (students) about is giving themselves enough time,” Orser said. “It’s funny, at this point in the semester, students are used to giving themselves that extra time, but this just exacerbates the issue.”

Tagg Kelt, Camosun College Student Society staffer said the partial strike is having an effect, though it could get worse.

Kelt works from Camosun’s Interurban campus – an area as yet unaffected by the job action, but also one where service is regarded as unsatisfactory by many, Kelt said.

“Even before job action, they’re not meeting demands,” he said.

Kelt studied at UVic during a 2005 transit sympathy strike in support of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation – a time he remembers as being marked by students hitchhiking along bus routes. He hopes the advent of Ride-Share.com, a website that matches drivers an passengers travelling to the same destinations, will allow students and other transit users an alternative this time around.

B.C. Transit receives about

300 customer calls on an average day. Monday through Thursday, that number doubled to between 500 and 600. Yet on Friday, when more than 80 runs were cancelled, they received just three calls of complaint regarding service.

“It’s worrisome to us that people might be finding some other way of getting around,” said Meribeth Burton, spokesperson for B.C. Transit.

B.C. Transit was expecting Friday, a difficult day to staff under standard conditions, to bear the brunt of the cancellations.

“There’s definitely a possibility the action will be increased.”

Williams said riders have largely shown their support for drivers and makes no promises on when the cancellations will end.

“There’s definitely a possibility the action will be increased,” he said. “I can’t say a date and

time of what that may be but there’s certainly is a possibility that job action could increase beyond the overtime ban and the uniform ban.”

“Carter run faster,” he yelled to his 8-year-old pal. The two were competing in the city championships for elementary school cross country running, Oct. 22, at Beacon Hill Park.

Bronson finished the race in first place and Carter finished in third for the Grade 3 boys. “They wanted to win together, they are best buds,” said Bronson’s mother, Tracy Pheiffer.

“I was pretty confident, I like running,” added Bronson.

Both are on the Eagle View elementary school cross country team. Gearing up for the competition, they practised with their school team twice a week. The championship run was the longest the boys have completed – one kilometre.

Both say the experience in other sports like soccer helped them become fast runners.

Works by famous local and nationally renowned artists will be on the auction block, along with many other items, as Canada’s oldest synagogue raises money for much-needed repairs.

Congregation Emanu-El, 1461 Blanshard St., is a designated National Heritage Site and, as it approaches 150 years old, is the oldest synagogue in Canada in continuous use.

There is a history of community involvement with the synagogue that stretches back to its beginnings. When it was built in 1863, people came together from throughout Victoria to help raise funds for the small community of Jewish residents who were committed to establishing

the synagogue.

“There were more than 200 people who made contributions towards the synagogue,” board vice president Jean Dragufhan said. “That’s quite impressive given that there were only about 35 members of the synagogue at that time. So it just shows you the level of community support.”

The congregation hopes to once again rally support from the wider community for its Nov. 22 auction to raise money to go towards repairs, namely for the roof. The building is showing its age and a large crack has formed in the centre of an arch toward the back of the synagogue.

The roof, which is the original, is shifting and the whole structure needs to be stabilized “If we can’t do that, the building itself is in great danger,” Dragufhan said. “It’s alarming if you look inside because the crack is getting so large, chunks of plaster are now falling off. We’re still OK, but I don’t know for how long.”

The synagogue reached out to celebrities both local and from afar, along with local businesses, for items to auction. They answered generously and

Rabbi Harry Brechner and Jean Dragufhan, synagogue vice president, show off a print by Leonard Cohen that will be auctioned off at the Congregation Emanu-El Benefit Auction Nov. 22. The proceeds will go towards rebuilding the synagogue’s roof. the synagogue now has more than 100 items for its auction.

Among them are a number of works of art from some big names in the art world. One is a signed print donated by Leonard Cohen, which comes with a certificate of authenticity. The work is the first in a series of 50 prints by the legendary JewishCanadian songwriter, poet and artist.

“We wrote him and asked him and he responded,” Dragufhan said.

Prints were also donated by local artists Robert Bateman and Phyllis Serota. Other celebrities who contributed items are Margaret Atwood, Marc Garneau and Morley Safer.

responses,” Dragufhan said. “There’s a whole range of items that will be up for auction so people can have something small, they can bid on something large.”

The goal is to raise $25,000 through the evening. In total the synagogue is trying to raise $900,000 to complete all needed repairs, including restoring stained glass windows, replacing the front porch and improving the seismic stability of the building.

Synagogue organizers are also planning events for 2013 to celebrate the 150th anniversary.

Tickets for the live auction are $50 and include hors d’oeuvres, care of The London Chef, and drinks. Legendary Victoria auctioneer Eric Charman will be leading the live auction.

For its first concert of the 2012-13 season, Saanich Peninsula’s Via Choralis chamber choir presents music for Remembrance Day, featuring Gabriel Fauré’s well-loved Requiem. The program will also include Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine and other music by Canadian composers Paul Halley, Pete Seeger, Larry Nickel and Linda Fletcher.

Pie Jesu from the Requiem will be sung by young Victoria soprano Gwendolyn Jamieson, who has sung for five years with Viva Youth Choir and recently was invited to join the adult women’s choir Ensemble Laude, one of the youngest members of that choir. She has performed as a soloist with the early music ensemble, A Great Noyse, on several occasions, and recently attended as the youngest participant at the Historically Informed Summer School in York, England.

Accompanist Braden Young studied piano performance focusing on collaborative piano at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and the University of British Columbia. He has also pursued studies in voice and in composition, and has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards for academic excellence as well as performance.

The performance, directed by Nicholas Fairbank, is on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 10030 Third St., in Sidney.

When questioned about the lyrical content, Dawson said, “I read dark stuff, watch dark movies and am drawn to that kind of subject matter.

As far as musical influences, I count Joe Henry and Elliot Smith as a direct influence on my writing. Their music is dark, but for myself, I don’t feel that dark as a person. Maybe writing music like this is a way to get it out of my system.”

Whatever therapeutic function creating the songs on Nightshade may have had for Dawson, it’s his audience that benefits, and local audiences will have the chance to hear for them-

A decidedly spooky atmosphere has descended on Oak Bay Village for Halloween.

Oak Bay Business Improvement Association is possessed by the spirit of the holiday, hosting Canada’s largest exhibition of pumpkin art, a display that has received rave reviews in Toronto and New York.

Pumpkin Art is the creation of local artist John Vickers. The man behind the Victoria Buskers Festival and the Chalk Art Festival, Vickers created the display as an event that would be consistent with his philosophy of providing free, family friendly, public festivals and events to the people of Greater Victoria.

The pumpkin display is a 12-year labour of love for Vickers, who has intricately carved upwards of 500 gourds (actually very authentic looking polyurethane pumpkins). They represent themes ranging from the humorous to the macabre.

“I like to create themed groupings of the pumpkins,” he said. “It’s great when people recognize something nostalgic – something that takes them back to another time. They’ll point them out and it’ll evoke other memories and conversations.”

While the display first started on some front lawns in Victoria’s Fairfield neighbourhood in 1998, it soon outgrew that location and was hosted at Government House for several years.

It has moved a few times since, but found a longterm home in Oak Bay in 2011.

“We’re thrilled to have Pumpkin Art back in Oak Bay,” said Heather Leary, the project manager for the Oak Bay Business Improvement Association.

The pumpkins are displayed on the back lawn of the Oak Bay Municipal Hall, 2167 Oak Bay Ave., until tonight (Oct. 31). The display is free but donations will be accepted for Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. Between 2 and 5 p.m. today, children are invited to trick-or-treat at shops on Oak Bay Avenue.

Cross country locals stunned

Every few years a surprise team shows up as a major contender in the Island high school cross country series.

This year it was the Reynolds secondary boys team, taking the Island Cross Country Championship team title at Beaver Lake on Oct. 24.

Reynolds beat out perennial powerhouses Oak Bay High, which came second, and Nanaimo’s Dover Bay secondary, in third.

Oak Bay won the girls team title.

“The (Reynolds) boys lost their minds a bit just because it was so unexpected,” said Reynolds coach Brad Cunningham. “We knew we had a deep team, but Oak Bay and Dover Bay are so strong, and (fourth-place) Mount Douglas too.”

Ben Weir of Glenlyon Norfolk School set a course record as the top male, completing the 6.7-kilometre course in 20 minutes, 42 seconds, just three seconds ahead of Liam Kennel of Oak Bay High.

Thomas Getty of Mount Doug took third, 30 seconds later, a sweep by the trio of teammates who train together at the city’s elite high school track and field program.

Pacing the lead group of male runners at Beaver Lake was Reynolds’ Seamus Maguire, as usual. Maguire is the reigning B.C. high school 800-

metre champion and a “frontrunner” who likes to lead out.

Close behind Maguire was Erik Evans, among the pack of Weir, Kennel and Getty. Evans overtook Maguire as they finished fourth and sixth, respectively.

Key to the Reynolds’ win was getting five runners in the top 25, a feat that will prove challenging against the rest of the province this weekend. Taylor Lyman, a Grade 9 student, finished an impressive race at 16th overall, with teammates Thomas Thierbach in 19th and Jon McKay in 23rd.

“We’ve been fifth the last few years so it’s great we finally get to go to provincials,” Cunningham said.

The top four teams qualfiy for provincials in Prince George on Saturday (Nov. 3). Reynolds will be sending the maximum seven runners, same as with Oak Bay, Dover Bay and Mount Doug. Reynolds’ only cross country girl, Grade 11 Klara Hlavon, will also make the trip. She finished 21st overall.

“We’re not a traditional cross country school, so this is a special year and it’s one that’s been four years in the making,” said Cunningham, a former competitive triathlete.

“When Maguire and Evans came together four years ago I thought, ‘huh, we have something here.’”

Reynolds is a “ragtag group” of exceptional athletes, Cunningham explained, as most of them have another sport that is their main focus.

Evans is a triathlete who trains under local youth coach Kelly Guest. Maguire is a Saanich junior Braves hockey player hoping to crack the B.C. Hockey League.

A 12th championship banner isn’t out of the question for the Vikes, but with 12 first and second year players on the squad, this year is more about experience and the long term plan.

Last week three Vikes were named Canada West All-Stars, local products Kyla Kirby and Annie Walters-Shumka, and Surrey’s Carly Krestanovich.

The national championship begin with roundrobin play from Thursday to Saturday. The top two teams following pool play will advance to gold-medal final on Nov. 4. All 12 matches will be streamed on CIS-SIC.tv.

Even before the race started, running partners Caleigh Bachop, Madelyn Brunt, Brittany King and Megan Kinghorn found each other. With Miryam Bassett of Nanaimo, the crew formed a lead pack, as they usually do, and jumped out ahead of the 4.5-kilometre high school cross country championships course at Beaver Lake.

No one noticed Desirae Ridenour, a Grade 9 student from Mill Bay’s George Bonner Middle School.

“We took our group out pretty hard, we didn’t see (Ridenour) at the beginning of the race,” said Bachop, a Grade 12 student from Mount Douglas secondary.

“We were running our usual race, but on the second hill (Ridenour) took off. We all thought ‘who is that?’ but I wasn’t feeling it for a push. We didn’t say anything, we just let her go.”

Ridenour went on to win the race, 16 seconds ahead of Bachop (second) and 19 seconds ahead of Bassett (third), who is last year’s champion.

Brunt, of the Oak Bay High champion girls team, finished fourth, while King and Kinghorn, of Spectrum Community school, slipped to seventh and eighth.

“I had never seen (Ridenour) before, she ripped it up out there,” Bachop said.

The Mount Doug girls team finished fifth and missed the cut for provincials, just a few points behind Campbell River high.

Bachop will attend as the only girl from Mount Doug, a contender for top spot.

“It’s too bad we can’t go to Prince George as a team, we were so close,” Bachop said.

The middle distance specialist will return as a go-to member of Mount Doug’s track and field team this spring. She won the provincial 800-metre club championship in the summer and is weighing her post secondary options for 2013. That includes the possibility of joining the Vikes, which would follow in her dad Steve’s footsteps.

Steve competed for Esquimalt High before setting the Vikes’ indoor 800m record, which he holds to this day.

Bachop isn’t going it alone in Prince George. She joins the Mount Doug boys team, which finished fourth, and her elite high school track and field teammates.

“Brunt, King and Kinghorn and I all go back and forth every race and they are highly fit right now,” Bachop said. “It will be a tough race.”

Now that they know about Ridenour, the crew can keep an eye on her just as they’ll be hoping to keep Kayla Stone of Vancouver and Regan Yee of Hazelton (north of Smithers) within reach. sports@vicnews.com

Braves hungry for Wolves Pink in the rink returns to Pearkes

Friday is the annual pink in the rink game for the Saanich Braves, and it’s a night the Island’s second place junior B team does not take lightly.

The Braves (12-3) host the Westshore Wolves (10-7) at Pearkes arena. There’ll be no problem finding motivation for the Braves. Not only is it breast cancer fundraiser night, it’s the first rematch since the Wolves shutout Braves 3-0 at Pearkes on Oct. 12.

“Goalie Alec Dhillon stood on his head that night and changed the momentum of the game,” said Braves coach Brad Cook.

“We started doing things out of character, which can happen on nights like that.”

The Braves bounced back from that game, which was only their second loss of the season, with a win. The Braves lost their next game to the Victoria Cougars, but have since won three straight, two against the Kerry Park Islanders and one against the Peninsula Panthers.

And now the Braves hope to make it four in a row with the expansion Wolves visiting.

“It comes down to playing a more structured game and limiting the Wolves’ chances. It could very likely be a goaltending duel,” Cook said.

Likely starting for the Braves is Tanner McGaw, who has 10 wins in 12 games. McGaw, a former Victoria Grizzlies tender, owns the league’s best save percentage of .928, and has the second best goals against average of 2.21 per game.

Defensively the Braves are still in a fix. Forward Andrew White has done an admirable job since moving to into the defensive core against the Oceanside Generals on Oct. 13. Cook said White will stay on the blue line until injured D-men Liam Sproule and Garrett Kemmler are healthy.

“Not having Sproule and Kemmler is a big blow to this club. We’ve used seven different affiliate players already and it’s still October.”

No surprise to anyone is the play of captain Ty Jones, last year’s MVP. Jones centres the top line with returnee Shawn McBride on his left and Josh Gray on his right.

Gray is new to the Braves this season, a displaced Kootenay junior B player who finished last year with the Texas Brahmas in the junior B Western States Hockey League. The 20-year-old scored

They’ll attend the Canada West Final Six in Edmonton this weekend, Nov. 3 and 4.

The B.C. Liberals’ opened their pre-election convention Friday with an unconventional outreach effort to nonmembers to contribute to party policy.

Billed as “Free Enterprise Friday,” the forum included online participation in addition to about 900 delegates gathered at a Whistler hotel.

Premier Christy Clark kicked off the session with a call for the party

to “reach out our arms, to open the tent and be as big as we can possibly be.”

But before the policy, a series of speakers emphasized the importance of holding their political coalition together.

Kelowna delegate Brad Bennett reviewed 60 years of B.C. political history, dominated by 31 years of Social Credit government led by his father Bill and his grandfather W.A.C. Bennett, and then more than a decade under the successor coalition.

John Martin, the B.C. Conservative candidate in the April byelection who has since joined the B.C. Liberals, described how he learned the coalition lesson when the first-ever NDP MLA was elected against a split vote in Chilliwack-Hope.

The policy forum was chaired by Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender, Kamloops banker Fiona Chan, chair of the Thompson Rivers University board of governors, and Paralympic athlete Michelle Stilwell.

Treasurer Jeremy Pearce reported on party finances, announcing the party has nearly paid off its bank loan of more than $1 million from the last election. The B.C. Liberals raised $8.7 million in corporate and individual donations in 2011, spending $5 million on operations and $2.1 million on election readiness last year.

NDP leader Adrian Dix hosted his first leaders’ dinner in Vancouver Thursday, selling nearly 900 tickets at $395 each. The audience included a strong contingent of business, union and other traditional supporters.

In his speech, Dix referred to the Free Enterprise Friday session at the B.C. Liberal convention, and joked that the NDP event was “Theoretical Marxism Thursday.”

Amateur chef wins $25,000 with chili slams Food Network judges Victoria recipe a winner Don Descoteau News staff

As a professional engineer, Stephen Childs knows how to get the most out of a space.

Walk into the compact, split-level condominium he shares in Vic West with wife, Jennifer, and 14-month-old daughter, Della, and the first thing one sees is pots and pans, hanging industrial-style on a ceiling-mounted rack.

An avid cook, Childs wanted to create more usable space on the counters. He also hates major cleanup jobs.

That aversion to scraping dry, caked-on food from dinner dishes inspired him to create a dish he calls chipotle chili bites.

The success of his culinary creation, combined with a New Year’s Resolution to “put himself out there more” and try new experiences, saw Childs enter tryouts for Food Network Canada’s

amateur cooking show, Recipes to Riches, with his wife earlier this year in Vancouver.

Childs’ flavourful dish combines chili with polenta, an Italian pudding which, when thickened with corn meal, hardens into a crust when cool.

“I thought, ‘chili’s good, polenta’s good,’ I wonder how I could make this an edible dish in your hand?” he recalls.

The two components are fairly straightforward, he says, but combined they make a unique dish that has taken on a life of its own in terms of its popularity with Childs’ friends and co-workers.

Entering the competition together was a natural for the couple, who both love to cook, Jennifer says.

Her family has a tradition of cooking and baking. She and her sister, who was visiting from Banff, went to the 2011 tryouts on a whim, but missed the cut.

This time around, Jennifer entered her decadent dessert, called moochalicious love cookie chocolate espresso shortbread. She made it past the first round, but saw her husband’s cre-

After his win, Childs was at the Superstore in Langford handing out free samples, Oct. 27. The name of the product was changed to “Chipotle Chili Slams,” and the polenta crust was changes to a cornmeal for production.

In true reality TV style, Childs was sworn to secrecy about the result of his episode, even to his wife.

“All I know is that he came home with some blisters, so I know he worked hard,” Jennifer says.

She harbours not even a friendly grudge against her husband – she rates his chipotle chili bites a “12” on a scale of one to 10.

“The whole process has solidified how important food is in our life,” she says.

Stephen downplays his culinary prowess, insisting that “anyone can do it.”

Asked what advice he might give aspiring entrants for the show, he says, “Don’t be intimidated by the kitchen. What’s the worst that can happen?” editor@vicnews.com
