The Cowichan Success by 6 Council of Partners recently held a strategic planning session to determine the direction of Success by 6 in the coming months. We are delighted that ongoing initiatives such as the Cowichan Kids Magazine, Cowichan Kids Website and the Champion for Children Awards of Excellence will continue in the coming year. Cowichan Success By 6 is also pleased to announce that in partnership with School District 79 Learning Links and the Duncan Mall, we will be supporting the development of a new Early Learning Centre. Many children have already had the opportunity to visit the Whales Tales program at the Duncan Mall by Sears but will soon have the opportunity to engage in a new and exciting interactive play centre opening in the Duncan Mall!

We are also thrilled to be hosting our second Mini Conference called, “Understanding Children” on Saturday October 27th to celebrate parents and acknowledging them for the important job that they do each day. Our goal is to provide an opportunity where parents can connect with parents, parents can learn about community organizations and programs and our talented early childhood professionals can supplement their worlds with all kinds of great information and fun activities. Every parent needs a day out to regroup and rejuvenate and we can’t wait to provide this fun filled day for the moms and dads in the Cowichan Region.

Finally we would like to announce that the Success by 6 Council of Partners is welcoming three new Council members. The talent and commitment of our team continues to grow with Adriana Soler Director of Programs at Parkside Academy, Delta McDonnell Director of Programs at Sundrops Centre and Ellisha Blackburn speech pathologist and new mom of baby Lucille!

If you talk to your baby from the very start, this way you will not be a stranger to your baby and he will have a sense of belonging. You will always be in touch with each other and will never grow apart as the child gets older. Talking to your baby also helps him grow and develop. Communication is a good tool for healthier growing and learning.

Cold and Flu Season

Can I breastfeed my baby when I am sick?

Yes, absolutely. If you have a cold or flu the best thing for you to do to keep your baby well is to breastfeed. The BC Centre for Disease Control recommends good hand washing, getting the flu vaccine, and breastfeeding to provide immunological protection for your child.

If you get sick, continue breastfeeding:

• When you have a viral illness your immune system makes antibodies to help you fight the virus.

• Antibodies transfer into breast milk and your baby benefits.

• Your baby may get sick, but if they do catch the bug, they are generally less sick and get better faster.

• Always wash your hands well before you cuddle your baby.

If your baby gets sick, continue to breastfeed:

• Breast milk is easily digested (for an upset tummy) and is full of antibodies to help the baby get better.

• Breastfeeding is still the best even if Mom needs to take medication. Most medications are fine for breastfeeding, but check with your health care provider or pharmacist for more information.

• Children ages 6 months to five years and their families are recommended to get free flu vaccine. Families with babies under 6 months of age should get flu vaccine.

Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day! You’ve heard it before and the research keeps supporting it. Children who eat breakfast are better able to learn and focus on their schoolwork, have healthier weights and eat more essential nutrients. They also have more energy for activities and play.

The brain needs fuel to think, which affects the ability to learn. Eating a healthy breakfast provides that fuel. A breakfast containing foods from at least 3 of the Food Groups of Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide: Vegetables and Fruit, Grains, Milk and Alternates Meat and Alternates will sustain a child throughout the morning and help them concentrate on their learning tasks.

Making Healthy Breakfasts Happen:

Stock up your kitchen and freezer with healthy, easy to prepare breakfast staples; whole grain cereals, breads, muffins, milk, yogurt, fruit or 100% unsweetened fruit juices, bagels, eggs, peanut butter, cheese.

If mornings are rushed at your house, consider spending a few minutes each evening preparing for breakfast the next day; set out cereal boxes and the toaster, cut up fruit and store in the fridge for the morning.

Some families find it works to get up a little earlier so they can eat breakfast together and have a chance to talk about plans for the day ahead.

Ideas for Easy Breakfasts:

When planning breakfast think about making sure that all the parts of the meal are included. A healthy breakfast includes some Fruit or Vegetable, a Grain and some protein from the Milk/Alternates and/or the Meat/Alternates food groups.

Here are some examples:

Fruit Smoothie or blender drink, Whirl in a blender 1 cup of milk 2 Tbsp of unsweetened orange juice concentrate

1 banana ice Any fresh, frozen or canned fruit can be substituted in this recipe. Try yogurt, fortified soya beverage or buttermilk in place of milk for variety.

Serve with a whole grain bagel or a muffin to make a 3 food group breakfast.

Whole grain toast with a boiled egg, peach slices and a glass of milk makes a 4 food group breakfast.

A bowl of whole grain cereal with milk and berries or dried fruit on top makes a fast 3 food group breakfast. Try mixing 2 types of cereal together for variety.

Leftovers make a good breakfast too.

Think about last night’s pizza or leftover stirfry or casserole, served with a piece of fruit and a glass of milk.

For breakfast on the run; a muffin or bagel with slices of cheese and a piece of fruit or dried cereal stirred into a single portion of yogurt and a piece of fruit.

On colder mornings hot cereal makes a nice change; place 75 ml of oatmeal and 150 ml of water in a bowl and microwave

for 2-3 minutes, add raisins, chopped apple or cinnamon and serve with milk or yogurt.

Eating a healthy breakfast sets your child up for a good day of learning at daycare, preschool or school. Parents are important role models for healthy eating.

Enjoying breakfast with your children helps them develop good eating habits for life.

Emergency Preparedness for

Kids

Family is important! A little bit of extra preparation can help your family to take care of each other during an emergency or disaster.

Since emergencies don’t usually warn us that they are coming, we need to have some basic supplies wherever we may be (at home, work, school or play).

What essentials does your family need?

Food (nutritious food bars, nuts, dried fruit, canned goods) Water (store water at home, car, work, school and play) Warmth (clothing and blankets) Light (flashlights for when the power goes out) Medications and First Aid (what does your family need?)

Personal Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth, deodorant, soap, shampoo/conditioner, sanitary supplies, diapers) Money (bills and change in case the ATMs don’t work) Recreation (books, games) Pet supplies (food, water, leash or carrier – your pets are counting on you!)

Family pictures (including pets) Important Documents (home insurance claims phone number, identification, etc.)

How Safe Can You Make Your Home?

Have a Family Home Hazard hunt! Kids are great sleuths!

Things to know!

Sleep with all bedroom doors closed – keeps the smoke out so you can get out in time!

Kids will sleep through smoke alarms so make sure you yell really load “FIRE – GET OUT NOW!” Practice getting out of your home safely through various exits (doors and windows). Kids – wait until your parents are home before you try this!

Set up a safe meeting place outside your home and teach everyone to go there anytime you have to leave your home due to an emergency (fire, flood, earthquake, etc.)

Drop, Cover & Hold during an earthquake and Squat, Cover & Hold during aftershocks Develop your family emergency plan using the tools in the workbook (see below)

Do this when the clocks change:

Test and vacuum smoke / carbon monoxide alarms Change water supplies Update food supplies Shake up fire extinguishers (turn upsidedown and smack on the bottom and shake

Reading Labels for Food Allergies and Intolerances Reading labels for good nutrition is already a challenge. So what do you do when you have a food allergic child or a child attending a daycare or classroom where certain foods are restricted?

First, if you’re the parent of a newly diagnosed food allergic or intolerant child, it’s very important to ask your doctor for a list of specific foods and ingredients to avoid. For example, if milk is the allergy, you will need to know that manufacturers use whey and casein which are milk based and will need to be avoided.

There are many food allergy and intolerance websites which have lists of ingredients to avoid and foods which you may be surprised to learn may not be safe. Some good sites to check are: The Food Allergy Initiative: www.foodallergyinitiative.org Anaphylaxis Canada: www.anaphylaxis.org The Canadian Celiac Association: www.celiac.ca It is also important to read ingredient labels every time you go grocery shopping. Manufacturers change formulas and packaging on a regular basis and this may make a family favourite unsafe.

Do not purchase foods from bulk bins or without full ingredients listed on the package, such as with small Halloween candies.

Be sure to check for allergen warning statements. An example of this is, “May contain traces of nuts.” Many allergic people ignore these warnings, assuming that manufacturers are putting them on the label for liability purposes. While this may be true for some manufacturers, others are putting on the warning because the food may in fact contact that major allergen. For severe allergies, eating foods with warnings should be avoided.

If you have a child who is not allergic but can’t take certain foods to school or daycare, the thought of reading all of the food labels may seem overwhelming. You may also wonder if a food restriction is necessary.

First, take the food allergy seriously. If a food restriction is in place, it is because there is a child at risk of dying from coming in contact with that specific food. The parents of that child need the help that you can offer in keeping their child’s environment as safe as

possible. Food allergies and intolerances have doubled in the last 10 years so you may begin to encounter this more often.

Read labels carefully every time you go grocery shopping. Be sure to look for the allergen both in the ingredient list and in the warnings below. Many manufacturers are becoming aware of the need for a quick reference and may even put a bold list of the major allergens in the product below the ingredient list.

Some are also creating special logos to advertise their products as allergen friendly.

Ask the school or daycare to provide you a list of appropriate snacks and lunches to send. This will help you to find foods in the store that you know are acceptable. Helpful lists of peanut and nut aware lunch solutions are available from the Margaret Moss Health Clinic in Duncan. Find out whether you will be allowed to send food that doesn’t directly contain the banned ingredient but may have only the “May contain…” warning.

Talk to the parent of the allergic child if they’re willing and check out the resources available online. If you’re not sure, ask. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Autumn Transitions

Autumn is often a time for transitions for young children. They are asked to go from the free flowing days of summer to the more structured environment of school or child care. No matter how great the child care or school might be, or how much your child seems to anticipate the opportunity to meet new children and do new things, the transition may be difficult.

Look to the child care provider or teacher for support during this time. The provider or teacher should understand that all children and families adjust to new situations in different ways. They should be able to help you and your child work through the steps to a smooth transition.

Step one is to visit the child care setting or school with your child a couple times before you actually leave your child there.

Most schools provide opportunities for families to visit before the end of June.

Take advantage of Ready Set Learn, Strong Start or Open House events that the local school might host throughout the year.

Most child care programs are open to short visits before the child starts and may be able to accommodate gradual entry.

Step two is to be positive. Leaving your child with someone else for the first time can be heartbreaking but try to keep those feelings from your child, as she will react to your distress. Be positive and enthusiastic about the situation, even if your child does not understand the words, she will feel the confidence you have.

Step three is say good bye. Never sneak out the back door. Upon arrival, take a few moments to greet the provider or teacher and settle your child in an activity. Then it’s time for a short good bye and leave.

This is especially important for those going

to child care for the first time. A long good bye or false starts out the door will confuse the child and make things even more stressful. Develop a routine of a good bye hug and a promise to return at a particular time (it’s important to come back on time) and then out the door, even if your child starts to cry. Your provider will comfort your child and usually, she will stop crying shortly after you leave. You could call your provider in thirty minutes or so to reassure yourself that your child has settled down.

Step four is to provide your child going to child care, with something from home that will provide comfort to the child, be it a blanket, special toy or something of yours. Let the provider know of the object’s special value to the child so that the provider can make good use of it to settle your child. For children going to kindergarten, a picture of you or your

Step five is to give it time. Depending on the age and temperament of the child, it could take as long as a month for your child to feel comfortable and secure in the new situation.

Life is about transitions and no matter how much we are looking forward to the change or how positive the transition, there will be stress. This is particularly true for young children so the more we can do to prepare children and give them the reassurance that the transition is positive, the better the experience will be for everyone.

Artistic & Active Autumn Trails

School is in, routines are settling and the rainy season is fast approaching. I don’t wanna be hunkered inside with active children. There are plenty of messes to clean up as a mom, trust me, I know. Some days an extra mess is equal to extra fun!

Here are a few ideas for an active and artistic autumn.

1.)Walk the outdoor Learning Center at Somenos Marsh, watch the leaves change color and sight new bird species with your kids-pack a snack for the benches inside the stroller friendly wooden walkway. Visit: www. somenosmarsh.com 2.)Rainy day dress up! Take photos of your toddler puddle jumping in their favorite costume! Just another load of laundry Mama!

3.)Make Mud in the yard add blue or green food coloring to make it look like a swamp. If, you don’t have a yard use a plastic storage container-just fill with dirt from outside and ad water when you get inside. Put storage container in the bathtub.

Just another dirty tub to scrub!

4.)Neighborhood Nature Walk-carry a 4 liter ice cream bucket and allow your child to fill it with random leaves, pine cones, or flower peddles. If, you don’t want to bring the wet bucket of nature into your home, find a tree close to your place and make a nest for an “elf” or “pretend mini dinosaur”.

5.)Spice up your life! Go to the dollar store and buy a few spices, add a small amount of water and create a few Spice Paintings.

Introduce your child to the smell of international spices! They may not like to taste them yet in their food but, this is a fun way to introduce some new colors and scents to your child.

Enjoy this new fall season by embracing the rains with puddle jumping and splash your way through life’s muddy times!

Encouraging Language Development

As a speech-language pathologist, working at the Sundrops Centre for Child Development, I am often asked about what parents can do to stimulate the language of their young children. There are many techniques that parents can use to help their children to understand and use language and these techniques can help all children, not only those who have language delays.

A great starting point is for parents to get face-to-face with their little ones. This means that parents get on the same level with their children, so when your child is on the floor, sit on the floor with them. If they are standing, try crouching down to be at their eye level. Being face-to-face with your child ensures that they are getting the visual information they need to learn speech sounds.

After you have gotten faceto-face with your child, next try following their lead. This means that you engage with and talk about whatever your child is interested in. So when your child gets a new toy and is more interested in the box that it came in then the toy itself- just go with it! Talk about the box, play with the box, and put things in it, all the while emphasizing the words like “in” and “box”. When you follow your child’s lead, you ensure that they get the language they need to learn.

Think about what you would need in order to learn a second language. You would need to be able to see the person’s face and mouth in order to get information on how to make the speech sounds in their language. You would also need them to talk about what you were looking at or interested in. For example, if you were looking at a table you would

need them to label that for you and not talk about something else. By getting face to face and following your child’s lead, you are giving your child a solid foundation for language learning.

use one word, model a new single word for him like, “pull!”

If your child uses one word regularly or can combine some words, try saying “pull out!”

If your child has more language, talk about what is in the pictures like, “I see a dress.

Pull it out!”

No Better Time to Put Children and Families First

Mary Dolan knows a deal when she sees it.

Trained in Scotland as a nursery teacher she immigrated to Canada in 1967. For four decades she has been working in early childhood education in BC and passionately advocates for young children and their families.

“Families under stress often have to choose between paying for quality child care or putting food on their table,” she said. “It is the second highest cost after housing.”

Mary embraces a Community Plan for a Public System of Integrated Early Care and Learning in BC. “It is time,” she said.

The Plan, began in 2010 when grass roots organizations - the Early Childhood Educators of BC and the Coalition of Child Care Advocates – pooled their resources to determine how to make child care work in BC. Two years later, after considerable feedback from around the province, the Plan is being presented around the Cowichan Valley by Mary and a group of supporters.

“When people endorse the Plan our politicians recognize early care and learning must move up the list of priorities for British Columbians’ tax dollars,” Mary said. “Fees are too high for many families that want their children in quality, licensed programs.”

Salaries are too low for many working in the field. “This creates a high turnover for staff. Many trained educators leave the field.”

Highlights of the Plan Families earning over $40,000 annually pay $10/day for full time child care, $7/day for part time Families earning under $40,000 receive fully subsidized care Early Care and Learning programs moved to the Ministry of Education with democratic control First Nations communities have power and resources they need to govern the services for their children Hubs created in communities where a variety of early child development services work together to ensure seamless service Bachelor’s degree becomes the standard education for early childhood educators in group care. Diploma in family care Child care educators paid $25/hour with benefits

The City of Duncan, School District 79 Trustees and the City of Ladysmith have endorsed the Plan. North Cowichan councillor Kate Marsh will be a leading voice supporting the Plan at this year’s UBCM. “The Plan is gathering steam across BC,”

Mary said. “It is away to support families and reduce poverty and it will advantage all of society.”

Creating Lunch Box Envy & Healthy Eating Habits Too! Ah, the rhythm and routine of a new school year brings with it a bit of parent-sanity after a long summer working as entertainment director. But the excitement and the optimism of a new school year quickly disappear and the lunch box enthusiasm you first felt in September quickly slips away

by October. But this year can be different; here are 5 healthy, easy tips to keep that September glow lasting the whole year!

1) The Big “O”- Be Organized; Help teach your kids healthy eating habits by together planning their packed lunches each week. Let children choose 3 components a day. This handy, printable chart, www. goodbitelunch.com/articles will help your weeks’ plan.

2) It’s All In the Name; If I told my son he was having veggie pasta salad in his lunch he’d right away put up his “yuck” walls. So call it something kid friendly like, Pizza Pasta Salad. Nut butter and smashed fruit tortillas might be called, ”jelly belly roll ups”, etc.

Write the entrée on the lunch bag, “Today’s Special – Aloha Kabobs”, it creates a sense of fun and excitement.

3) Size Matters; Don’t over load your child’s lunch. Pack age-appropriate servings and keep in mind the time allowed at school for your child to eat.

Rushing can create anxiety around meal times and if your child feels rushed. Meal times should be enjoyable!

4) Swap It Up; On average there is 20 school days a month. So it isn’t that hard to imagine (really it isn’t!) baking a double batch of whole grain

cookies just once a month.

Individually wrap them up and pop them in a large freezer bag.

Get two other parents to do the same and then swap them up. The money you’ll save on purchasing sugar packed, highly processed treats will be enough to have a day at the spa

by June! Always promote eating healthy real food choices!

5) Money Talks; You’ll love saving more money while keeping your kids healthy at the same time. Somewhere along the way while my son was in elementary, I started buying juice boxes for his lunch as if it was an expectation. Last year I broke my habit and started easily creating natural flavoured waters. My son enjoyed them and we haven’t looked back. Each day, depending on supplies I’d put couple of slices of either, lemon, orange, cucumber, mint or any combo in his water bottle. He loved it plus he drank more water. So it was a win-win situation! I saved money and he developed a love of natural flavours...plus a bonus, his friends had lunch box envy and he was proud!

Make sure you always choose whole grains, this will avoid kids experiencing that afternoon slump and they won’t come home feeling starving. And don’t forget to pack your own lunch!

Set a good example for your children, a healthy parent is a happy parent, so make sure to look after you!
