Pulp business down while lumber prices up AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Canfor credits strong offshore demand and an increase in construction for higher lumber sales.

Canfor Corporation reported net income attributable to shareholders of $22.2 million, or $0.16 per share, for the third quarter of 2012, compared to $4.5 million, or $0.03 per share, for the second quarter of 2012 and a shareholder net loss of $21.6 million, or $0.15 per share, for the third quarter of 2011.

For the nine months ended Sept. 30, 2012, the shareholder net

income was $10.5 million, or $0.08 per share, compared to net loss of $12.5 million, or $0.09 per share, for the comparable period of 2011.

The company reported moderate market improvements in the third quarter of this year, crediting further “stabilization of underlying demand in both North American and offshore markets,” the company’s release states.

“The start-up of our

upgraded Radium mill early in the fourth quarter of 2012 will further boost our capacity to provide high quality products to our valued customers.”

Regarding pulp and paper results this quarter, Kayne replied: “It was a tough quarter as our pulp business faced challenges presented by weaker markets and the Canfor Pulp facilities came out of an extended period of major maintenance and capital upgrades.

“The focus now is on getting these recently upgraded pulp mills achieving targeted operating rates.”

City rewards recyclers

The Quesnel landfill is entering a new era of greater environmental responsibility, improved cost control, and long-term sustainability.

A new entrance and weigh scales open in “test mode” Nov. 28. The scales will be in use from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., seven days a week (closed Christmas and New Year’s Day).

The recycling and garbage drop-off will remain open 24 hours per day until Jan. 8.

Jan. 9 and following, the new operating hours and a new fee structure takes effect.

The new system is designed to reward those who recycle and separate their waste.

Residents who have less than 350 kilograms of household garbage, and who separate their recycling, will pay no fees. But an individual who wants to throw a mix of garbage, recycling, yard waste and other waste types in one bin will pay by weight ($50 per 1,000 kilograms).

The fee structure will be posted at the landfill and at www.quesnel.ca The changes at the landfill are happening because: • It is environmentally responsible. Residents already recycle a great deal of material. It is expected that will continue, as recycling and yard waste disposal will remain free of charge.

Extending that date reduces how much the City has to put aside for final closure each year, while also providing more time to plan and save for a new landfill.

Transit upgrade At its last meeting, council approved upgrading the transit fleet by replacing three aging “Polar” buses with

two new “Vicinity” and one “ARBOC” bus.

Staff brought forward a revised plan that would see two additional aging Polar buses replaced by two ARBOC vehicles, one year ahead of schedule.

The additional cost is $8,000 over three years. It is estimated that cost increase will be offset by savings in maintenance to the older buses. Once complete, the new fleet of buses will be low-floor, easy-entry buses, improving accessibility.

Other news The city will provide three loads of gravel for the upcoming Rotary Auction.

This falls in line with past practice and costs the city about $600.

Council approved the sale of a city-owned property at 1340 Twan Avenue. The city acquired the property at tax sale in 2001, and leased it out until 2012; it is currently vacant. Sealed bids will be accepted at City Hall until 2 p.m. PST on Friday Nov. 23.

A local volunteer firefighter will be deployed to either Peru or Panama as part of the Firefighters Without Borders Canada program. It’s an opportunity to share training and experience with a foreign fire service.

One spooky cold night in Halloweentown lived a family of Frankensteins.

The Frankenstein family were getting tired of their old home.

They lived in a haunted house with holes in the walls and floors.

They just figured out that there was a house for sale in Hawaii.

So they packed up their things and took a plane, train, bus and a taxi.

When they started to unpack, their son’s arm fell into a box.

Frank, their son was so excited because it was almost Halloween.

A day later he met a girl named Alix.

She was fearless.

One Halloween, they decorated with skeletons, vampires, zombies and werewolves.

She was bored. until one night her friend dressed

up as an alien.

She saw a zipper and unzipped it.

One day later there was an alien.

She tried to unzip it but it was real.

After that day, when she went to bed a vampire bit her.

From then on she was a feared girl.

Her brother came into her room and scared her.

When she went trick or treating, she met Frank.

Frank liked her and asked her if she would go on a date with him at Grooey Smoothie.

When they were there, she asked why he was still in his costume.

He said he wasn’t in a costume.

Alix went running and screaming.

Frank followed her home and explained that he was a nice monster and never had a friend before and they got married and lived happily ever after.

The Zombie Anthony Bone Grade 4, Barlow Creek There was a scary haunted house and a scary zombie named Rylan.

Rylan chased a teenager named Anthony.

The owner ran after Rylan and he jumped on Rylan but he got up.

Rylan ran again.

The cops came and jumped on Rylan.

He got Rylan and Rylan got put in jail.

Rylan broke out of jail.

The zombie lived happy ever after.

A mummy was on a waterslide.

Rylan chased Anthony on the water-

side and the mummy grabbed Anthony.

The mummy locked him up in the graveyard in the ground.

He was scared so he knocked on the door.

The cop dug with a shovel.

The cop opened the grave and he was alive but the cop thought he was dead.

Anthony scared the cop.

The cop’s name was Bob. The mummy’s name was Rob. The cop ran and got put in jail.

Rylan broke himself out.

Rylan broke the mummy out of jail.

Community garden approved

from A2 Council approved using approximately $1,500 from the volunteer training budget to support the initiative.

A request to create a Community Garden at 325 Lewis Drive (near the skating rink) was approved.

The Climate Action Group, in coordination with the Baker Creek Enhancement Society, made the request, which would see city property used for the initiative. This same group has run a successful garden at Quesnel junior school for the past three years. It provides bags of fresh produce for those in need. Council also approved providing $4,800 to install a water service at the site.

Council approved the city renewing its Building Inspection Agreement with the District of Wells. The new contract expires Dec. 31, 2016. The fee for 2012 was $1,500; that fee will increase by the Consumer Price Index percentage each year.

Alzheimer’s breakthrough Researchers are giving new hope to Quesnel families coping with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Already one in 11 Canadians over 65 lives with the disease. And since age is the highest risk factor, that number is expected to soar as the population continues to get older.

Advances in research are offering new reasons for optimism, though, including new tools that may allow doctors to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease earlier and with more certainty.

“We are beginning, more and more, to understand how the disease doesn’t just present itself at times of first symptom onset. There’s a whole process that’s occurring in the background,” Vancouver geriatrician Dr. Philip Lee said.

“We may be able to make the diagnosis earlier and earlier and potentially in individuals before they have symptoms. To intervene at that point would be desirable so that hopefully we can even prevent – in the future – the condition from actually worsening.”

Researchers are exploring new interventions for people diagnosed with dementia and non-pharmacological interventions such as exercise and diet that may also reduce the risk of the disease.

Please be advised that with snowfalls of four inches or greater, the City of Quesnel removes the windrow of snow left by snow plows at the entrance to each driveway. It is the responsibility of the homeowner to mark any obstructions that may be damaged by backhoes clearing the driveway entrance (i.e. retaining walls, planters, shrubs, decorative bricks). Please mark by using a brightly colored stake about 4 ft long and place it in front of the obstacle.

Markers are available at the Public Works office located at 21 Johnston Bridge Loop.

DOWNTOWN PROPERTY OWNERS Snow Removal Notice

The City’s Streets and Traffic Bylaws require all downtown businesses and property owners to remove the ice and snow from the sidewalks in front of or adjacent to their premises PRIOR to 10:00 a.m. on each business day (Monday to Saturday inclusive).

This applies to all businesses regardless of their individual operating hours or days.

The City will inspect the sidewalks to determine that sufficient cleaning has been completed. If it is determined that more attention is required, the City will attend to the matter. The minimum charge for cleaning the sidewalk is $100.00 (one hundred dollars) which will be levied against the respective property owners.

Collection of any outstanding accounts at December 31st will be made through property taxation.

With rising liability claims, clean sidewalks will keep everyone out of the courts and customers downtown.

MLA Musings

Protesting Pipelines This week over 3,000 people gathered on the lawns of the BC Legislature to protest both the Enbridge and the Kinder Morgan pipelines. There was also a strong anti-oil sands flavour to the crowd, a crowd made up of First Nations, environmental and labour organizations, and concerned citizens, young and old, from all around the province.

Protestors are also gathering at MLA offices across the province this week.

A number of NDP MLAs were present at the protest. No Liberal MLAs showed up, despite the public beating the Liberal government is now giving Enbridge, Alberta, and the federal government over the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline.

Pipeline politics are all the rage these days.

The proposed Keystone XL pipeline has made more than a cameo appearance in the U.S. presidential election, and the Northern Gateway pipeline has become a flashpoint for both the BC NDP and the BC Liberals as they try to out-maneuver each other in advance of the May 2013 election.

What’s missing in all of the political posturing around pipelines on both sides of the border is any political leadership toward a national energy policy or a framework to address energy security. We need to wean ourselves off fossil fuels so that pipelines, with all of their environmental and health and safety risks, would eventually be rendered redundant.

In my estimation, Enbridge should never have been allowed to enter the National Energy Board process.

The federal and the BC governments should have told Enbridge that the legal framework wasn’t there to support such a project because the Crown hasn’t fulfilled its obligation to address First Nations’ rights and title issues. The company should also have been informed that British Columbians were never going to allow super tankers in the Douglas Channel, nor would the majority of British Columbians be willing to risk a spill of raw bitumen in their pristine wilderness.

In short, the company should have been told straight up that there was no social license for their pipeline proposal, or for tankers in the Douglas Channel. More than 2,000 protesters gathered on the B.C. legislature lawn Monday, some promising to provoke arrests as well as criticizing proposed heavy oil pipelines from Alberta to the B.C. coast.

Organizers offered training in civil disobedience techniques to the more than 1,000 people who signed up for the protest, under the banner of Defend Our Coast. Sponsored

by Greenpeace and the Council of Canadians, the coalition includes unions, aboriginal leaders and environmental organizations.

Victoria Police were out in force to back up legislature security, who locked the buildings down and turned away visitors for the day.

The protest focused on two proposed projects, Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline from northern Alberta to Kitimat and the pending application

by Kinder Morgan to twin its oil pipeline that has been carrying Alberta oil to Burnaby and Washington state for more than 60 years.

Among the speakers was David Coles, president of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union.

He said his union is “diametrically opposed” to pipeline expansion, despite the fact it represents employees at the Chevron refinery in Burnaby that is supplied by the Trans Mountain oil pipeline from Alberta.

The new proposals are “job killers” because more diluted bitumen from the Alberta oil sands will be shipped out raw, either from Burnaby or Kitimat, Coles said.

Language of love

L

earning an additional language opens so many doors at so many levels.

Those who can speak more than one language can attest to this, as can parents who have children who are immersed in learning a language other than English.

Be it for future career opportunities or for better travel experiences, there simply is no downside to adding languages to one’s intellectual repertoire.

Statistics Canada this week released language data from 2011 census and it shows, to the surprise of nobody, Kamloops remains an English-dominant community.

In fact, the breakdown of languages spoken in homes in Kamloops has not really changed since the last census in 2006.

However, it is interesting to note about one in almost nine people in the Kamloops census area cite a language other than English or French as their mother tongue.

After English and French, the languages of German, Punjabi and Italian are most-commonly spoken in the city, followed by Chinese languages and Arabic.

While not representing as rich a dialect domain as is encountered on the Lower Mainland, the fact 1,200 people in the area cite French as their mother tongue and another 8,400 speak one of an assortment of other languages does show the Kamloops region is not as linguistically bland as, perhaps, some may believe.

From French immersion schools to an array of language electives available in our high schools, exercising the tongue and brain while expanding our communication skills can only enhance our lives.

y American cartoonist, Jim Hunt, posted on Facebook his illustration with this caption: “Why can’t the department stores let us enjoy each holiday like we used to? They’ve turned it into one big ‘Merry Hallowthanksmas!’”

Within days his funny cartoon was shared by 70,000 people.

To say Jim struck a nerve would be an understatement.

“It was still summer when all this Halloween stock was displayed,” my neighbor grumbled when I ran into her at the store.

“Who would buy all this crap months ahead of time?”

Well, my nine-year-old daughter would if she could.

Eager to pick through the large assortment of get-ups and decorations, Daisy has been making a bee-line for this particular section of the store for the last couple of months.

“It makes me mad the way these stores are always jumping ahead to the next holiday and selling it way too early,” my neighbor continued.

“Sell, sell, sell, it’s all about money to them.”

How true. But if I owned one of these stores, I imagine I’d be doing the same.

The fact is, a lot of people tend to buy early. I think they’re called “organized” or “planners” or some other word that doesn’t apply to someone like me.

If a store doesn’t get their products out early enough, another one will, and that’s where the consumer will likely spend their money.

The stores are obviously savvy to display their stock months in advance. If it didn’t work, they wouldn’t do it.

The only thing that would prevent them from this practice is if more people were procrastinating, disorganized types like me.

seasonal and holiday goods seem to come out earlier every year.

Yet if it weren’t for my kids, I doubt I’d even notice these displays at first.

I’m one of those people who buys stuff on an as-needed basis, so unless Halloween’s in the next day or two, I’m not purchasing candies or costumes quite yet.

The downside to my strategy?

The potential for a much smaller selection.

“What happened to you?” an old friend asked after finding out I had no idea what I was dressing up as, while she’d been ready for awhile.

“You used to be Miss Halloween.”

I did. I even used to make my costumes from scratch.

But I gave that up when I discovered how much easier it could be to just rent or buy one off the rack.

They might not have been as fun or unique as my originals, but I sure liked the lesser commitment of time and money.

I did ask myself if any research had been done to justify the thinking.

What will it accomplish? What are the risks associated with marijuana? Of course we are all entitled to opinions, that is what makes a democratic society. I have done some research. It appears that it is not easy nor should it be, to arbitrarily decide to decriminalize marijuana.

GUEST VIEWS increased dramatically over the years: 1978 – 1:37 per cent, 1988 – 2:59 per cent, 1998 – 4.43 per cent. THC content continues to rise. The reason for this is the sophisticated cannabis cultivation of today.

I certainly was not aware that a popular form of marijuana called Sinsemilla, made from

the buds and flowering tops of female plants, have the THC content of 7.5 per cent to as high as 24 per cent. Hashish, a resin made from the flowers of the female plant have THC levels of five to 10 times higher than crude marijuana.

The Netherlands is making changes to their laws as they pertain to coffee shops – where marijuana is tolerated for recreational use. It has created issues for them.

Talk about confusing – first of all the way I read the info, I have found, coffee shops are allowed to buy and sell Cannabis but suppliers are not allowed to grow,

import, or sell it to the coffee shops. So begs the question, how do they get their supply?

Unless I have misunderstood what I have read, one of the drug policies of the Netherlands is to combat the production and trafficking of recreational drugs. It is still illegal to sell or purchase cannabis anywhere other than a coffee shop.

The Netherlands is also moving to a more restrictive approach, banning cannabis sales to non-Dutch residents – Dutch citizens must now be registered to go to the coffee shops. No admittance to anyone

under 18 years of age.

Coffee shops will not be allowed within 200 meters of schools. A new proposed law will put cannabis with a THC content of 15 per cent or more onto the list of hard drugs. According to research, marijuana does have an effect on the mind and body. It shows marijuana reduces the ability to learn and retain information. Marijuana is, by itself, a high-risk substance for adolescents; the impact on learning is critical.

Marijuana smokers are prey to lung damage, and the risk of cancer.

Apparently there is as much exposure to cancer-

causing chemicals from smoking one joint as smoking five cigarettes.

From what I understand there are many dangers to marijuana. So the question should be, do we seriously believe that marijuana is harmless and that grow ops will disappear if decriminalized? If still elected I would have been speaking very loudly against such a resolution.

Is it safe to use?

I reached behind me to grab the candy dish and then I felt something squishy.

I turned my head to see what it was and it was a melted chocolate bar.

I pushed it to the side, grabbed the candy jar and went to open the door.

The door handle broke and the door swung wide open, falling right off its hinges.

There stood a miner with TNT. This was no ordinary kid dressed up as a miner with fake TNT, this was a real miner out to destroy the world. I reached for my rifle, turned around to shoot him but he was gone!

The next minute, I heard a loud bang coming from upstairs.

I ran up the stairs to tell the miner to get out but he wasn’t there.

Instead of him being there, there was a huge hole in the floor.

He was downstairs, hitting all the walls out with his pick ax.

One dark and stormy Halloween night, Skylar was sitting in her room on her bed when she heard a knock on the door.

“Bang! Bang!”

Skylar felt scared but also, at the same time, she thought it was her mom or at least she knew it was her mom.

The hairy scary monster Valyce Mamic Grade 4, Parkland It was a dark, wet night when I looked out my bathroom window into the backyard and on the grass there were so many shadows I couldn’t count them.

They were different shapes and sizes and looked very scary.

I ran out the door and I was still running when I saw this cool, giant spooky house. It looked like a haunted house because there were skeletons in chairs on the porch and cobwebs were hanging down from corners of the roof.

I didn’t know what to do so I went up to the door.

The door knocker was shaped like horns.

When I banged the knocker on the door it was so loud I nearly flew off the porch.

So when the door opened, there was a hairy scary monster. But I said, “you’re not so scary. You look so cute and cuddly.”

Potluck serves up international comradarie

English as a Second Language Settlement Assistance Program (ESLSAP), a division of New Focus Society, hosted an international potluck dinner, Oct. 3. The guest list, which included MLA Bob Simpson and Mayor Mary Sjostrom, represented 11 different birth countries.

Traditional foods from China, South Korea, Japan, India,

Alaska, B.C., Germany and the Ukraine were enjoyed by the nearly 40 guests.

ESLSAP Program Coordinator Pat Colbourne was pleased with both the turnout and the camaraderie shown by this group.

“It was beautiful to look across the room and see different nationalities chatting,” she said.

The ESLSAP has been active in Quesnel since 2007 and has served more than 50 immigrant clients from 13 different countries. This is a learner-driven, volunteer tutor program which exists to assist newcomers to Canada with their settlement and language needs. New Focus Society is always looking for volunteer tutors.

Art Gallery looking for new energy and new volunteers There’s a meeting Nov. 1, scheduled for two sessions, 2 – 4 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m. in the meeting room at the Arts and Rec Centre and this could be the most important meeting you’ll ever attend.

The Quesnel Art Gallery Society is in transition, with long-term volunteers, including 30-year veteran Pat Wahlstrom, retiring.

With these retirements, the gallery is enthusiastically seeking new voices, new energy, new ideas and volunteers willing to do as little or as much as they’re able.

“We need to add to our volunteer roster in order to carry on the vital work of the art gallery,” Wahlstrom said.

“It’s an opportunity for those interested to work with likeminded people who support arts, culture and heritage in our community.”

She went on to say why she’s given so many years to this organization.

“I just love art in all its many forms,” she said.

“There’s applied arts, music, fine arts, performing arts and many more expected and unexpected art forms.

“For people who say they don’t have a connection to arts, I tell them they need to stop and look around, take the pictures off your wall, give back the pottery mug you drink your coffee from, eliminate the furniture you sit

on and so much more. They all represent creativity that enhances your life.”

For all the gallery volunteers, the work is rewarding whether you commit to a couple of hours of sitting in the gallery, assist with the organizing and executing of the monthly shows, promote arts, culture and heritage in the community, dress the art centre’s glass cases, help with advertising or any number of details that keep any business successful,” Wahlstrom quotes an old adage, “many hands make light work.”

“With only one meeting a month and many aspects of the committee requiring varied levels of commitment, the committee is looking for people with different abilities and whatever time they have to give,” she said.

The Quesnel Art Gallery is for established and emerging artists, where both have the opportunity to show their work.

“Our gallery is accessible and welcoming to most submissions,” she said.

“We pride ourselves on our juried shows and celebrate the new and developing artists with such shows as the elementary school show and the open shows.

“Every artists begins somewhere.”

Those interested in assuring the art gallery continues its good work are welcome at either meeting time, whichever is most convenient.

QFC presents Beasts of the Southern Wild

The final film in Quesnel Film Club’s fall series, Beast of the Southern Wild is showing Nov. 1, 6:30 p.m. at the Carib Theatre.

This first feature by United Kingdom director Jim Loach and first-time filmmaker Benh Zeitlian, Beasts of the Southern Wild is adapted and co-written by playwright Lucy Alibar.

At home in the bathtub, a marshland cut off from the coast of Southern Louisiana, an unapologetically uncivilized band of humans live alongside the animals that sustain them, blissfully disconnected from their resource-burning neighbours to the north.

Among them, six-year-old Hushpuppy (Quvenzhane Wallis) already fends well for herself, sharing a trailer with her father, Wink (Dwight Henry), who hasn’t been the same since Hushpuppy’s mother left them years earlier.

Wink can be cruel at times, though his tough love is intended to prepare Hushpuppy for when he’s no long there to protect

her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack – temperatures rise and water levels surge, creating an ominous and terrifying climate (a vision that seems especially sinister post-Hurricane Katrina.)

Arguably the soul of the film, newcomer Wallis delivers a passionate and intense performance as the defiant and imaginative young heroine.

Existing entirely in its own universe, Beasts of the Southern Wild is equal parts mythological, anthropological, folkloric and apocalyptic.

An emotionally wrenching and heartfelt portrayal of the bond between a father and his daughter, this film is one not to be missed.

Marina was born in Wingdam, B.C. then moved to Wells at a young age, then, after school, and working in the family wood business, Marina ventured to Vancouver, Dawson City then back to Vancouver before settling down in Wells again in 1979. In 1980 She married Steve Kimmie where they remained until 2000, when they decided to move into Quesnel to retire.

What are you afraid of?

H

alloween! Will you be scared? Will ghosts or goblins jump out and scare the pants off you? Sometimes it is fun to be scared. That’s why roller coasters, scary movies and Halloween are so popular. We like to get the adrenalin pumping once in a while.

But often fear isn’t so fun.

There can be much to be afraid of – illnesses that run in our family; growing old; people who may hurt us; falling off the wagon; driving winter roads. We may also have deep inner fears that we hide, like being afraid of our feelings, or of what people would think of us if they could really see us inside.

How do you deal with fear? How do you face the things that make you afraid? Some of us act tough to cover it all up. Some lash out to make others afraid of us so we Shannon Wyminga don’t feel so weak.

Cariboo Presbyterian Church We may experience depression or get physically sick by holding our fears inside.

There is an answer to fear. Perfect love drives out fear‌ says the Bible (1 John 4:18). When we are afraid, we need someone bigger than us to protect, guide and give us the confidence to face our fears, assuring us we are loved no matter what. Perfect love doesn’t leave room to be afraid. Perfect love helps us feel good about ourselves and comfortable with our limitations. It heals the hurts in us and lets us see ourselves with grace. Perfect love comes only from the Creator who loves us completely.

God’s love, when we receive it as a gift, can drive out the fears that hold us down. So what are you afraid of? Ask the Creator’s son Jesus into your life to bring love that conquers fear.

When the boogie men jump out at you, you will be safe from all you fear, for you will be loved perfectly.

The Daily Walk.

I go for my walk every morning each day, I get back to the house, and I’m ready to rest, The dog and the cat trot along all the way. I’ve worked my whole body to the end of the I start out real slowly, then work up a sweat, test.

All of this exercise is great you can bet.

I’m feeling much better, I’m healthy and well, What lies ahead, one can never tell.

Memories

My memories race backwards over the years, I sit at my table and in my eyes there are tears.

I thought of old friends, who we did meet, to take pack horses to the Itcha’s, what excitement to speak.

My memories came alive with pictures on our wall, then came the thoughts of how we answered the call.

We planned menus that would make a great fare, Dehydrate different meats, fruit and veggies with care.

A month we could stay with all the food that we had.

Pack trips are hard work and the guys would be glad, to sit on a long, have dinner by fire light, and listen to Johnny Axe Boy tell his tales by night.

Andy leads out, old felt hat on his head compass in his pocket, follows the dry creek bed.

What a joy it was to ride the meadows on end, excitement awaited behind every bend.

Through the Bazaeko Valley, the river does wind, Over 35 crossing the view is divine.

The country is untouched, the old timers do claim rock Bluffs are formed from wind, weather and rain.

Ptarmigans fly up and there’s eagles around, It’s a place for wildlife, all animals abound.

Hoary Marmots call from their rocks on high ground, Their calls seem to echo a musical sound.

Cariboo appear and trot by our side, They are elegant, curious and travel with pride.

They seem so unafraid of us, the human being, The gather around us, amazing sight to be seeing.

High on the mountain, there is Little Emerald Lake with Downton Valley, what pictures to take.

The Grey Jays find us close to the cabin, They show up in pairs and then bring all their kin.

Keep your food protected and well under cover.

The watch with keen eyes, nearby they do hover.

They’ll perch on your head, your hand or your plate, Gobble up your breakfast, both he and his mate.

Not fussy at all, whatever is on the menu, Bacon, beans, sourdough or a pot full of stew.

They are just another creature, in this time of reflection, This land I will remember with so much affection.

I’m glad we rode horseback, over this mountain scene.

I loved the warm cabin and chili with beans.

These things are at the top of the things I have done, I’ll remember the country in the days that do come.

As I think of those trips, I hear the wind in the pines, The squeak of my saddle as the trail unwinds.

The laughter with our Son, for the stories he has told.

These memories are eternal, they never grow old.

I see the red sun rising again in the East, Sleeping under the stars, my eyes, open to the feast.

I feel the cold evenings, the morning frost is so white, The camp fire is blazing in the misty day light.

I see again, “The Moose Horn,” and the horses at graze.

I feel my warm bed roll and wish I could laze.

What beauty, simplicity, this country does share, Fishing, spring water, and pure mountain air

A

couple windy games of golf on the moors and glens of Scotland for the International Pairs World Finals taught a couple locals a lot about international competition and Scotland.

Brad Chudiak and Craig Delwisch won a trip to Scotlands' Loch Lomond golf course to take part in the International Pairs World Finals after winning a pairs competition in Comox last year.

A year later, earlier this month, the pair finally got to play the games they'd been looking forward to for so long.

The Canadian team faced off against 17 other teams from 12 other countries, including: South Africa, Spain, Portugal, United Arab Emirates, Israel, U.S.A, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Romania, Scotland, Ireland and England.

Out of the 18 teams, including Canada, Delwisch and Chudiak came in seventh.

Though disappointing with regards to placing, it was something of an eye opener for the pair, as well as an enjoyable trip to the heart of golf country.

"When we won at Comox, that was over a year ago. It's a whole year of build up,” Chudiak said.

“So the anticipation, it was huge. And then the day after the tournament there was a huge psychological let down.

Like it's accomplished, it's done. We didn't win, which was

disappointing because both of us are competitive. Not to finish in the top three was difficult.

That was our goal. And it was a feasible goal, but things happen and you don't play as well. I could remember how well we played in Comox and we're capable of playing at that level, but Comox was a special day.

Comox was a day over a year ago and to get to that place in Scotland, with all the pressure was hard. I could see it being very difficult for athletes who race nine and a half seconds. To prepare and be at that level, at that peak, at that time of year is extremely fortunate. It takes a little bit of luck and we just didn't get the bounces. You can

either bounce in or bounce out and we bounced out."

With the intensity of the competition in mind, the pair arrived in Scotland early to get their feet under them in Scotland and get in a couple extra practice rounds.

The first two practices went well, as the pair strolled the course, not playing to win, but to get to know the course and calm their nerves.

"It wasn't a links style golf course. It was a parkland golf course with links style bunkers, the big faced bunkers, around the greens. Parkland means it's in among the trees, it's not wide open and flat. It was quite hilly," Chudiak said.

Then, to keep them free of stress that over-thinking Chudiak and Delwisch took some time off to tour the country.

With Deliwsch driving and Chudiak keeping them pointed in the right direction, the pair managed to get about without much trouble, despite the differences.

The roads, besides the simple wrong-side drive the British seem intent on keeping, were different — tighter with a love of round-a-bouts.

"We must have gone through, I'd say conservatively, more than 2,500 round-a-bouts," Chudiak said.

The pair enjoyed the

agricultural country side, with its lush greens and harvest yellows, enjoying the difference between the vast wilds of Canada and the controlled fields of Great Britain.

As is almost required, the trips around the countryside included a couple distilleries, Auchentoshan and Glengoyne, to taste Scotland's water of life.

"Learning a little bit more about the process of making scotch and the pride they take in making scotch is interesting.

They do a very good job,” Chudiak said.

“When we taste wine and you can taste flavours like fruits, they do scotch tasting like that.

We ended up acquiring a bit of a taste for scotch."

"And of course we come back here and it’s expensive Scotch," Delwisch added.

The relaxation from thinking about the golf tournament also included a couple games of golf, one at Carnoustie, as well as a wander through St. Andrews.

Back at Loch Lomond, the pair had hoped for a third practice before the official practice, but, as per the stereotypical idea of Scotland as a damp, grey country, the sky opened up before the competition, raining out their practice. Groundskeepers decided to shut the course down after the downpour to protect it for the competition. see PAGE A21

The bantam Thunder hosted their first tournament of the season last weekend, finishing right in the middle of the pack.

The Thunder posted two wins and a loss in the round robin tournament, which was good enough to net them fourth going into the finals, with one point separating the Thunder from second. A loss in the finals put them at fifth overall at the end of the tournament.

The Thunder started out strong in the tournament, winning their first game, on Friday, against Smithers 6-5. They played Dawson Creek Saturday morning, see PAGE A22

Tough breaks on the links from A19 The weather stayed windy and chilly for the duration of the tournament, though not rainy enough for Delawish and Chudiak as the pair was hoping cold, rainy weather would give them the upper hand against teams from tropical countries.

After the practice, the pair switched to the tournament hotel where Chudiak and Delwish were treated to a mini flag bearing ceremony, at which Chudiak got to carry the Canadian flag with a parade of players holding a rainbow of foreign flags.

"It was very cool to be carrying the Canadian flag for that. It was a great experience, something you can't even tell people about really; you had to be there," Delwisch said.

After a great practice round and a warm welcome at the hotel, which included great food and very friendly people, the team was ready to hit the course and see how things would stack up.

The next day, after the first round of the tournament, things were stacking up well.

"We played pretty good golf that day. We got 36 points and I think the high team had 39 points. We were only three points out of first place at that point, so we were tied for third with a number of teams. Which is something to think about when you're sleeping," Chudiak said.

The second day, everything they had fought to pull together began to pull apart.

"Would I like to play the second round over?

Yeah. Would I like to play a couple second shots over? Yeah," Chudiak said.

A feeling that was corroborated by Delwisch.

"I played bad the second day. I'm not happy with my performance. But that's golf, that's sport," he said.

And with that, anti-climactic ending the tournament was over. The relationships and memories they gained while over there didn't fade so quickly though.

"One of the big things for me was just the experience of going over there and teeing off against the calibre of golfers that were there.

And meeting the guys, we really hit off well with some of the guys," Delwisch said.

"We really seemed to circulate around well.

We got to know everyone quite well. It was a lot of fun."

The pair still communicate with a couple of the teams they played against during the tournament.

Coming back to town under a bit of a cloud that followed them back from Scotland, the guys were encouraged by the positivity of the community.

"People come up to me since were back and they say congratulations. And I tell them yeah but we didn't get to where we wanted. They say, yeah but it's seventh out of all those teams from all over the world, and they're all very congratulatory," Delwisch said.

Now, after such a great impression with the trip and the tournament, Delwisch is tossing around the idea of starting up a tournament here to make things a little more interesting.

“It gets so damn quiet around here,” he said.

In the finals Quesnel came up against Terrace who they fought to a very close 5-4 finish.

Prince George, Williams Lake, Fort St. James, Vanderhoof, Smithers, Terrace, Dawson Creek and Westside Bantam hockey teams were in town to take part in the tournament, making the Twin Arena’s a very busy place to be.

Next weekend the Midget Thunder will play host to teams from all around the central interior.

The U14 girls, however, managed to take control of the game over

their counterparts.

The U14 girls took their game on the game, challenging the Prince George girls on their own turf and winning 7-4.
