Williams Lake DriveABLE assessment site The B.C. Liberal government is opening nine more locations for DriveABLE, including Williams Lake, to help reduce travel for those drivers, including seniors, who are referred to take the functional cognitive assessment.

The majority of referrals to DriveABLE by the Office of

the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles (OSMV) stem from reports to OSMV from medical practitioners who are concerned about an individual’s cognitive abilities related to safe driving.

Cariboo girls land quirky label

By Karen Schuurman South Cariboo teenagers, Kate Thiessen and Katelyn Duits have always been fans of Jones Pop. What they didn’t know when they sent in their photograph was they would be in the one per cent of entries chosen for their own label.

Donning Kate’s pet chickens on their heads, they had Kate’s younger sister, Ruth, take the funny photograph and they sent it off with distant hopes of being one of the lucky ones picked for the company’s adver-

tising campaign.

After hearing nothing from Jones Pop for months, they received a letter of congratulations with several of their own collector labels in September. The girls are ecstatic and are eagerly looking for their faces (and their chickens) on the strawberry-lime flavoured bottles of Jones Pop that should be in stores now.

Kate recently moved back to Manitoba with her family, but the girls will have a unique memory of the time they spent together in the South Cariboo.

New law helps seize crime proceeds VICTORIA - A new law blocks yet another avenue for criminals who are trying to profit from crime.

The Criminal Asset Management Act — in effect Sept. 30, — helps to reduce the financial incentives associated with crime, deterring criminals and enhancing public safety in B.C. The new law gives government the explicit authority to manage and NEW dispose of property forfeited

as a result of criminal prosecutions, or seized during an investigation in anticipation of forfeiture, fulfilling a commitment made by Premier Christy Clark as part of her Families First agenda.

Proceeds obtained from the forfeiture of assets used as instruments to commit crime, or that were proceeds of crime, can be used to compensate eligible victims and to help communities through the

funding of crime prevention and remediation projects.

The Criminal Asset Management Act dovetails with the B.C. government’s justice reform agenda. The new law enables prosecutors to pursue criminal forfeiture more frequently, as it allows for more effective management of assets that are restrained, seized or forfeited under the Criminal Code and other criminal statutes.

Christmas Shoebox goes local Carole Rooney Free Press

There’s a new kind of Christmas Shoebox program offered this year to benefit needy children in the South Cariboo.

Volunteers Bev Boyle and Lori Fleming are working together with the 100 Mile House & District Women’s Centre to make sure needy children in the local area get a treat this Christmas.

It’s easy to participate, Boyle says. Just pick a child’s gender, and an age group of 2-6 years, 7-10 years, 11-13 years or 14 and older.

Then find a small box, such as a shoebox or orange box,

and gift wrap the box and lid separately - this is important and leave it unsealed so it can be opened for safety checks before distribution.

Then go ahead and fill the box with small, handy items and treats, Boyle adds, and attach a note with the age group and whether it’s for a boy or a girl.

Suggested items to include are small toys, socks, gloves, brushes, combs, pencils and pens, paper, note books, playing cards, toothbrushes and toothpaste, flashlights, sunglasses, crayons, and wrapped and bagged candy. An anonymous note or a card to the child is also acceptable.

Boyle asks folks to kind-

ly not include baking, unwrapped candy, or any other food items, for child safety reasons.

Finally, drop it off by Dec. 14 at the 100 Mile House & District Women’s Centre, 475 Birch Ave., in the South Cariboo Business Centre, between 10-11:30 a.m. or 12:304 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

The Christmas Shoeboxes will be distributed to needy families along with the centre’s Christmas food hampers.

PUBLIC NOTICE LAC LA HACHE REFUSE TRANSFER STATION NEW OPERATIONS Improvements to the Lac La Hache Transfer StaƟon are complete and the Pilot Program is now in operaƟon. An aƩendant will be on site to direct users to the appropriate areas for waste disposal.

Household waste can be dropped oī in one of two bins and a third bin is available for oversized items like maƩresses and couches or small loads of construcƟon waste. Metals are sƟll accepted and a wood waste area has been added. A large item share shed has also been added. Users are encouraged to speak to the aƩendant about how to load or contain their waste to make unloading at the site as eĸcient and easy as possible, such as bagging grass clippings and leaves or segregaƟng wood waste into usable and non-usable piles.

Useable wood and building products are welcomed in the large item share shed.

The winter (October to March 31) hours of operaƟon will be: • Open Fridays through Tuesdays from 8 am to 11 am and from 1 pm to 4 pm • Closed Wednesdays and Thursdays The operaƟng hours were developed with a number of factors in mind.

1) Daylight Hours.

The Lac La Hache site does not have power. The best daylight hours were selected to avoid injury to users and aƩendants by operaƟng in the dark or low light condiƟons.

2) CompacƟon of Bins During the Day. In order to maximize the capacity of refuse bins, and gain hauling eĸciencies, the refuse bins will be compacted during the middle of the day with heavy duty equipment. For safety concerns, this means that mid-day the site will be closed to the public.

Assists in the collaboration between programs surrounding clients while respecting confidentiality.

Proficient in computer skills, internet searches, and technical communication.

Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills and empathetic understanding of First Nations cultural norms.

Ability to mobilize and respond to critical incidents and stress related issues within the community.

Demonstrates commitment to and promotes a lifestyle consistent with the expectations set out by the Canim Lake Band addictions program and services.

Spooky ways to learn while having fun Halloween isn’t just about dressing up and trick-or-treating – it’s also a great opportunity to learn! ABC Life Literacy Canada offers 10 tips, tricks & treats for the whole family to enjoy this Halloween – all in the name of learning!

1.

Tell ghost stories. Make up your own stories or read a classic scary book together, like a mystery

by Nancy Drew or The Hardy Boys. Reading with a child is one of the most valuable learning experiences.

2. Bake a pumpkin pie. Teaching children how to follow a recipe is a great way to improve both reading and math skills. Let them read the instructions out loud to help measure the ingredients while making a treat for the family!

Research the history of Halloween and share spooky statistics!

4.

Carve a pumpkin. Let the kids trace a design in marker on the side of a pumpkin (make sure they get creative!)

Then let them watch while you make the spooky carving come to life.

Make your own Halloween costumes. Use material from around the house to dress up in something spooky.

Create a list of things you’ll need and then have a scavenger hunt to find them all.
