f wallpaper has always been an afterthought in your interior design plans you may be surprised to learn there is actually a very serious wallpaper design society based in England. This is not someone’s eccentric aunt with a houseful of wallpaper samples. Founded in 1986, the Wallpaper History Society was established to promote an awareness and understanding of historic and contemporary wallcoverings. Their website states “Our scope is broad and encompasses not only the history of wallpapers but also topics relating to other types of wallcoverings, the subject of interior decoration as a whole and the increasing role which digital technology plays in design.” William Morris, a wallpaper and textile designer who is still a huge influence on style well into this century said, “‘Whatever you have in your rooms, think first of the walls for they are that which makes your house and home, and if you do not make some sacrifices in their favour you will find your chambers have a kind of makeshift, lodging-house look about them…’ Morris would heartily approve and be intrigued by a wonderful Canadian company called Rollout. Headed by Anita Modha, with studios in Vancouver and Toronto, Rollout has married design with technology since 2005 which allows them to push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of wall design. “In essence what we do is design custom wallpapers and digitally print them by the square foot,” says Modha. “We get our inspiration from community-based artists, photographers and designers, and the wall is our canvas.” There is no room for minimalism at Rollout where they live by the slogan “more is definitely more.” Colour, texture and even emotion are evident in their work. “Our premium, latex-based inkjet wallcoverings come unpasted in 36-foot-wide rolls that we digitally print to any square footage. Each project is unique and is integral to the design of your home,” says Modha. Technology has thrown the world of design wide open. Imagine a wall in your media room with a custom design from a favourite movie or a powder room enveloped in a custom design like a jewel. Crown Wallpaper is another Canadian company. At 75 years old, they are a family business now on their third generation of superb quality products. With over 50,000 wallcovering and fabric products you are bound to find the perfect design.
