comfort, with front-seaters enjoying more supportive buckets. There’s also an extra 2.5 centimetres of legroom for those in back. The base 2.4-litre four-cylinder (labeled “Earth Dreams”) makes 185 horsepower (189 for the Sport model), up from 177. The optional 278-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 gains a mere seven ponies. A six-speed gearbox on four-cylinder Accord sedans and up-level V6 coupes remains available. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) replaces the five-speed automatic option on all four-cylinder models, but a six-speed automatic remains the only choice for V6 sedans and base V6 coupes. In early 2013, Honda will introduce the Accord plug-in hybrid with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder mated with a 124-kilowatt electric motor for a total of 196 net horsepower. The plug-in can travel up to 24 kilometres on electric-only propulsion, operates on grid juice at up to 60 mph (96 km-h) and has a maximum 800-kilometre range. The clincher is it takes just three hours using120-volt house current to replenish the lithium-ion battery (about 10 minutes for a 50 per cent charge), or about with a 240-volt charger. The plug-in will be followed by a conventional hybrid, giving the Accord a one-two punch in this category.

ore of everything Accord buyers have always wanted, but in a smaller package. All new “Earth Dreams” 2.4-litre four-cylinder makes 185-189 horsepower and features an optional continuously variable transmission. Optional V6 remains optional on coupes and sedans. Both plug-in and conventional hybrids are arriving in early-mid 2013. Buyers expecting the ninth-generation Accord to be bigger and bolder will need to adjust their perspective concerning one of North America’s most successful sedan and coupe lines. The U.S.built (30 years and counting) Accord maintains a conservative presence, while undergoing a metamorphosis in style, features and running gear. The sedan has shrunk nine centimetres in overall length and loses about two centimetres between the front and rear wheels, while gaining and 1.5 centimetres in width. Concurrently, trunk space increases by five per cent, thanks to a more compact rear suspension. The Accord appears more svelte, with less front overhang. The coupe has undergone a more subtle transformation and remains one of the most appealing models of its type on the road. Inside, the artistically sculpted dashboard is thankfully devoid of knob and switchgear clutter. Drivers will be particularly enamored with the clear and crisp white-on-black centre gauges and the 20-centimetre multi-information display screen. All passengers are treated to more

T
he CR-V with its newfor-2012 styling and convenience features continues its winning ways for 2013 as one of the most popular entry utes around. A 185-horsepower fourcylinder connects to a five-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel-drive is available in all trims. CR-V devotees might have difficulty spotting the current model that arrived for the 2012 model year since it closely mirrors the outgoing model in all key exterior dimensions. The overall shape was only moderately tinkered-with, including updated nose and tail sections plus a dramatically shaped rear roof pillar. Honda claims that the CR-V’s shape, along with modifications to the undercarriage to increase airflow, has reduced fuel-robbing aerodynamic drag by eight per cent when compared to the previous CR-V. The interior provides a slightly enlarged passenger

area, but at the expense of slightly reduced cargo space. Maximizing the load floor is a snap with the standard Fold-Down Rear Seat that operates by flipping a pair of levers located just inside the tailgate. The rest of the cabin is standard Honda fare, which translates into an uncluttered (albeit plasticky) dashboard, comfy, supportive seats and generously sized storage compartments, including a large floor-console bin that can hold a purse or other bulky items. Under the hood is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 185 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. Fueleconomy is a Honda trademark, but the company claims that by activating the “ECON” button that alters the transmission and air conditioning functions, drivers can save a bit more. As for function, the lift gate is wide and tall while the cargo area extends more than five feet from the rear with the back seat folded. In base LX trim, the CR-V arrives with a significant amount of standard equipment, while the EX includes a power moonroof, fog lights, navigation and a few other niceties. Popping for the EX-L adds leather seat covers, 10-way heated driver’s seat, up-level audio system and access to the optional navigation system. Touring is the top model.

2013 GMC Acadia
L
ike its Buick and Chevrolet siblings, the GMC Acadia gets some work done for 2013. Front- and all-wheel-drive models get the same 288-horsepower V6; surprisingly thrifty operation for the vehicle’s size. To keep the popular eight-passenger Acadia from falling behind the German and Japanese competition, and in response to new home-grown rivals such as the Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango, GMC has given its big wagon a dose of attitude. The squared-off front end takes inspiration from the smaller Terrain and uses neat LED accent lighting in the new headlight clusters. New LED taillights, wraparound glass and a spoiler freshen up the rear end. The interior gets nicer plastics and leathers, highlighted by a new colour touch-screen with optional navigation. All Acadias come with either seven or eight seats and lots of room behind the third row for cargo. The second- and third-row seats can be folded flat for more storage, and, when upright, the second row slides fore and aft with one-hand operation. There’s also a raft of safety features such
as side-curtain airbags that run the length of the cabin, an exclusive front centre airbag, blind-spot and cross-traffic warning systems for 2013, anti-lock brakes, stability control to prevent a skid or spin, anti-rollover software and traction control. The carryover 288-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 still drives the front wheels (all-wheel-drive is optional) through a revised six-speed automatic transmission with better shift quality. Also new are upgraded dual-flow suspension dampers to better handle bumps and thumps. Contrary to what you know about front-wheel-drive, the Acadia can still tow up to 2,000 kilos (a decent-sized travel trailer or large boat). GMC’s luxo Denali sub-brand continues with the revised Acadia, too. The exterior gets unique badges, grille, body pieces, high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights, 20-inch wheels and dual exhaust, while the cabin gets special heated-and-cooled leather seats, higher-quality trimmings, a huge dual-panel moonroof, tri-zone climate control, a top-end audio system and a rear-seat DVD player with two screens.

AUTO PREVIEW 2013 Wednesday, October 24, 2012 Penticton Western News
2013 Chevrolet Spark
C
hevrolet’s Korea-built tiny hatchback ignites the brand’s smallcar lineup that includes the Sonic sedan and hatchback and Cruze sedan. A tiny 1.2-litre four-cylinder generates 85 horsepower and is likely the smallest engine ever to wear the Bowtie badge; fivespeed manual transmission, or available four-speed automatic. The urban jungle is becoming increasingly tougher to navigate these days. Fuel is pricey, the streets are clogged to the limit and parking costs are ridiculous. Sometimes, survival requires a minimalist transportation module with maximum space for people and cargo. For both urbanites and suburbanites alike, the Chevrolet Spark is now at your service. The littlest Chevy’s boxy design helps it deliver an impressive level of usable volume in the least amount of space. In fact, the car is nearly 15 centimetres taller than a Mini Cooper, but is slightly shorter overall and offers less distance between the front and rear wheels. With the rear seat in place, you’ll find only minimal stowage area in back, but accommodating life’s bulky items is just a split-folding-rear-bench
away. The rear door handles have been cleverly integrated as part of the window frame, giving the car a two-door appearance. Up-level Sparks come with added visual enhancements, including rocker panel moldings, roof rails and chrome trim. Inside, the single-pod speedometer, adjacent tachometer/fuel gauge plus a trio of temperature and ventilation control knobs are done up in a contemporary style. An eighteen-centimetre touch-screen operating the audio, navigation and hands-free communications systems can also be added. In keeping with the Spark’s modest transportation role, a 1.2-litre four-cylinder generates an equally modest 85 horsepower and 82 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission, or optional four-speed automatic directs power to the front wheels, but the manual provides the best combination of performance and fuel efficiency. The standard feature list includes air conditioning, power windows, ambient interior lighting, front disc brakes and 10 airbags, including knee protection for both front occupants. On the options list are remote keyless entry, leather-like seat covers, heated front seats, alloy wheels and a premium audio package.
2013 Chevrolet Malibu
C
hevrolet puts fuel performance ahead of horsepower performance as it takes the pulse of a new breed of sedan buyer. Base 197-horsepower four-cylinder; optional 259-horsepower turbofour; available “mild-hybrid” with 182-horsepower (net). Here, a 2.4-litre four-cylinder is connected to a 15-horsepower electric motor; sixspeed automatic transmissions for all. The latest Malibu represents a direction-changing model, especially in its powerplant lineup with the emphasis on fuel efficiency. For 2013, Chevrolet’s mid-size sedan sheds a few centimetres between the front and rear wheels, but is wider by nearly eight centimetres. Along with a broader stance, the result is added interior volume, especially front and rear shoulder and hip room. Inside, the Malibu’s stylists appear to have gone all out to improve on the previous model’s inviting environment while only slightly reducing front and rear legroom. Standard on all but the base model is Chevrolet’s MyLink touch-screen audio/communications system with a faceplate that pivots upward to reveal a hidden 15-centimetre-deep storage area. Camaro influences can be seen in the Malibu’s prominent taillights that are an asterisk in an otherwise conservatively shaped body that mimics the Toyota Camry in many respects. Base engine is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that makes 197 horsepower, which is up from the previous 169-horsepower four-cylinder. Optional is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder rated at 259 horsepower that subs for last year’s 252-horsepower 3.6-litre V6. Also offered is the Malibu Eco that uses General Motors’ mild-hybrid system (called eAssist) borrowed from the Buick LaCrosse and Regal. The 182-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder gas engine works with a belt-driven 15-horsepower electric motor/generator, replacing the traditional
alternator. It feeds off of a lithium-ion battery pack positioned behind the rear seat that slightly reduces trunk space. The battery’s 32 cells weigh about 25 kilograms, but the Malibu’s aluminum hood and rear bumper help slice about 60 kilograms from the car’s total weight. Other Eco technologies include stop/ start that shuts off the engine when the vehicle is at rest, then fires it up when the brake pedal is released.

Keep useful accessories in the trunk
I
n order to get the best possible fuel economy, many experts will give you some very useful advice, including that of keeping the trunk empty of unused items to minimize dead weight that uses up fuel. However, in the winter there are some items that should be kept in the trunk; these may seem like dead weight, but they are actually emergency tools in case of trouble. Because trouble comes in many shapes in the winter, you shouldn’t take any chances. Among the many items that should remain in your trunk over the winter, is a shovel. However, a full size shovel can be heavy and it can take up a lot of space in your trunk. So instead, why not buy one of those light, foldable shovels that are specifically designed to be stored in a car. Another useful item is a pair of traction devices that can come in handy in deep snow or on ice. In the past, they were made of heavy steel, however today they are available in plastic or, as shown on TV, as small aluminum plates that can be assembled to build a tractionaiding device.
Booster cables can also come in handy. But try to find a light product that is strong enough to handle the power surge. There are new products on the market with an electronic device that ensures you don’t confuse the poles. A small bag of sand can also come in handy, however don’t keep salt in the car. Even a small amount of salt leaking in the car will cause corrosion damage.

AUTO PREVIEW 2013 Wednesday, October 24, 2012 Penticton Western News
It’s time for winter tires again
Winter tires are a must for the cold season in the Okanagan.
N
o matter where you live in Canada, you are bound to experience winter conditions. Consequently, if you own a car or a light truck, you should be thinking about purchasing winter tires. Perhaps you believe that winter tires are only for residents of snowy areas and indeed, if you do live and drive in an area where it seldom snows, maybe that line of thinking would make sense. But would it really? One thing’s for sure, winter is part of our country and that means that it will be cold just about everywhere. You may be surprised to learn that winter tires are not only designed for snow, and that’s why they’re called
“winter tires”: because they are designed for the cold. Although it may not snow, the pavement will still get very cold. All-season tires may look good for the job, however, they lack that softer compound rubber that’s able to cope with cold pavement. Worse yet, all-season tires are pretty much useless on icy patches! Winter tires are a great asset during the cold season. If you haven’t purchased yours yet, consult a professional tire dealer who will guide you in the proper type of tire to put on your vehicle, according to your driving and travel habits. This is a wise and useful investment in your safety and that of your passengers.

2013 Kia Sorento he only way to get seating for up to seven people in the Kia line also has an available V6 and off-road capability. Two four-cylinder engines and an available V6; all-wheel-drive is an option. The Sorento remains a stylish, comfortable machine that takes its highwaycruising role seriously, regardless of weather or road status. The 2013 edition, available in front- or all-wheel-drive, also offers a split-folding third-row-seating option for folks needing to transport up to seven passengers. Buyers can choose between a base 175-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 191-horsepower direct-fuel-injection version of the 2.4 and a 276-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. All three are closely matched in terms of fuel performance, although the direct-injection fourcylinder does hit 9.5 l/100 km on highway. Ultimately, your final choice will likely boil down to affordability and the amount of grunt you require. A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission available, while all-wheel-drive is available with any engine. Standard LX features — four-cylinder and V6 in front-wheel-drive only — include air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steering column and steeringwheel-located audio controls. The EX means you get all-wheel-drive, bigger wheels, leather seats, dual-zone climate control and pushbutton start. The EX V6 Luxury adds panoramic sunroof, navigation with rear-view camera and a power passenger seat. The top model is the SX, which is what it will take for you to get the third-row seat. The only other model where it can be added is the EX V6 Luxury as an extra-cost option.

FORD
2013 Ford Fusion
T
he Fusion challenges for best-in-class fuel economy and best-looking sedan in one shot. A 170-horsepower four-cylinder plus two optional turbocharged fourcylinders worth 179 and 237 horsepower. Arriving in early 2013 are two gasolineelectric versions of Ford’s hybrid powertrains. The next-generation Ford’s Fusion represents a merging of high-fashion style with game- altering fuel economy, with significant technological treats coming along for the ride. The sedan’s primary eye-catcher is the dramatic roofline, suggesting kinship with the Audi A7, Volkswagen CC and CLS-class Mercedes-Benz. Another design highlight is the open-mouth grille that greatly differs from the previous triple-bar fixture. The Fusion’s fashion statement extends to the cabin, with its fancier trim, comfier seats and a freshly pressed control panel. The tailors at Ford also let out the Fusion’s pants and lengthened the cuffs a bit. The distance between the front and rear wheels increases by five inches and the width and height by about an inch. Trunk room is the only reduction spot (likely due to a shorter deck), but only by about six per cent. The Fusion joins the Hyundai Sonata and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in abandoning a V6 option, but eventually there will be no fewer than five distinctive engine picks, including
F
2013 Ford Escape
ord devises a daring Escape plan that nails it for style and fuelpump avoidance. Plenty of engine choices, all of the four-cylinder variety; the previous V6 and base five-speed manual gearbox are no more. Ford’s latest Escape represents a clean-sheet design-and-content approach to satisfy the needs of multicontinent buyers. The sleeker look is radically different from the outgoing version’s boxiness, however its slightly larger dimensions have resulted in greater rear-seat room plus slightly more passenger and cargo volume with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The interior is certainly inviting, with an attractively segmented gauge/control panel with asymmetric air vents. The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard partially blocks the heating/ventilation controls, but makes the area designated for cupholders and armrest/storage more accessible. The up-level Titanium model features well-bolstered front seats that are a major advancement over earlier Escapes. The base front-wheel-drive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while the front- and all-wheel-drive SE designation uses a 178-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged “EcoBoost” four-cylinder. A 237-horsepower turbo four-cylinder (also from Ford’s “EcoBoost” engine lineup) is standard on the SEL and Titanium trims. A hybrid version won’t be available this time since Ford’s C-Max hybrid wagon uses that drive system. Sadly for a few “Escapees”, the six-speed manual gearbox has shifted away from the Escape lineup, leaving only a six-speed automatic (with a detent for manual gear selection) as the sole transmission. A new “Intelligent” all-wheel-drive system can be ordered with the turbocharged models. It continually assesses road conditions and driver inputs “about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye” and can shift up to 100 per cent of the available power to either the front or rear wheels for maximum grip. The Escape is the first Ford to offer both Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control to help distribute the correct amount of power to each wheel when cornering so that the vehicle maintains its intended path. A dashboard display screen lets the driver know where the power is being distributed. The new-tech gear extends to the option sheet, which is understandably lengthy, considering the Escape’s four distinct trims. But the most unique option is the power liftgate that automatically opens and closes when you shake your foot hokey pokey-style beneath the bumper (great when your hands are full of kids and/or groceries).
AUTO PREVIEW 2013 Wednesday, October 24, 2012 Penticton Western News
two Prius-like gasoline-electric hybrid systems. It all begins with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, while 1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder “EcoBoost” engines, worth 179 and 237-horsepower, respectively, are optional with the latter a requirement for allwheel-drive Fusions. The 1.6 is billed as the thriftiest of the three, but in terms of fuel savings, the Hybrid and all-new Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid are really where it’s at. They arrive in the first quarter of 2013. Both employ a 141-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder combined with an electric motor to produce 188 net horsepower. The system increases maximum electric-only velocity to 100 km-h from the previous 75, and resets the fuel-economy bar to 4.0 l/100 km in the city and 4.1 on the highway from 4.6/5.4. The Hybrid also bests the league-topping Toyota Camry Hybrid’s 4.5/4.7 rating. The Fusion Energi plug ‘n’ play model use the same basic tech as the Hybrid, but stretches the all-electric range. Newly available communications and safety content includes keep-you-in-line lane-monitoring system, keep-your-distance adaptive cruise control, confidence-boosting parking-spot assist and shoulder-check-augmenting blind spot and cross-traffic alerts. Buyers can also order the latest version of Ford’s “SYNC” voice-controlled communications and entertainment wizard.
A
2013 Ford F150
s near enough a full redesign gets in the full-size pickup market, the F-150 gets new styling, more technology and the return of the ultra-luxurious range-topping Limited. The F-150 borrows the 3.7-litre V6 and 5.0-litre V8 from the Mustang, along with a turbocharged 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” V6 from the Flex; the 6.2-litre V8 from the off-road SVT Raptor can be had in upscale models. Ford’s plan for its best-selling F-150 follows a simple pattern: update the features one year, revise the engines the next. Sprinkle in some new trims and technology occasionally. Rinse, repeat. For 2013, Ford is betting that a sharper-looking F-150 and reintroducing the full-lux Limited trim will bring even more customers through the door. All models get new trim-specific front grilles, bumpers and wheel designs, but the Limited sure is a head-turner. Available only as a SuperCrew four-door cab, the body-colour moldings, brightwork and 22-inch wheels are set off by segment-first high-intensity-discharge headlights. The interior is highlighted by heated and cooled red and black leather seats, aluminum trim and piano black accents that complement the new MyFord Touch screen on the dash. Limiteds are exclusively powered by the popular 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” twin-turbo V6 with 365 horsepower. But that will be more than enough since more than half of F-150’s sold come equipped with a six-cylinder engine, whether the base 3.7-litre or the optional EcoBoost. Those wanting traditional V8 power are spoiled, too, with 5.0-litre or 6.2-litre options readily available in most other trims. The sheer number of F-150 combinations is mind-boggling. Not including paint colors and interior trims, there are four box lengths and three cab sizes (regular, extended SuperCab and four-door SuperCrew), not to mention both rear- and four-wheel-drive availability. A 411-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 is standard on the F-150 SVT Raptor 4x4, which is inspired by Ford’s participation in off-road desert racing. Standard gear includes special shock absorbers that stiffen as they compress to keep the truck from bottoming out or becoming too tippy while cornering. That’s a good idea, since there’s more nearly 30 centimetres of suspension travel in front and about 34 in back. The giant 35-inch-tall all-terrain rubber has been mounted to 17-inch wheels that are positioned farther outboard from the fenders to a point where the Raptor’s width has been increased by more than 17 centimetres compared to a standard F-150.

DODGE
2013 Dodge Dart
T
alk about a marriage; Chrysler pulls out a name from the past and merges it with it a modified Alfa Romeo platform. Base and optional four-cylinder engines, ranging from 160-184 horsepower; six-speed manual and available automatic transmissions, except top-level R/T that uses a twin-clutch automated manual. The creation of the new Dodge Dart has everything to do with both Chrysler/Dodge and Alfa Romeo being a part of the Italy-based Fiat automotive group. Although the Dart and Alfa’s Giulietta share the same basic platform, the Dart has its own distinctive sheetmetal, interior and powerplant selection. It is also built at a Chrysler assembly plant in Illinois. The Dart’s importance can be overstated enough, since Chrysler hasn’t had a compact sedan in play for about seven years. The Dart name will probably resonate with older customers, although many younger car buyers will likely miss the connection completely. Turning a Giulietta into a Dart involved increasing the platform length by 30 centimetres inches and the width by five centimetres. The result, claims Dodge, is a car with segment-leading scale, beating such small-car luminaries as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra
and Chevrolet Cruze. The cabin design is a standout, with futuristic-looking gauges, non-traditional control-panel displays and a unique storage area beneath the front passenger seat-cushion. The base engine is a 160-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder that’s standard with SE, SXT, Rallye and Limited trim levels. All can be upgraded to a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that’s rated at the same 160 horses, but leads in the torque department with 184 pound-feet to 145. Exclusive to the sportier R/T is a 184-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder. All three choices represent pretty powerful stuff for this class, which will be important as even the lightest Dart out-hefts most of its peers by a good 150 kilograms. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with all engines, while a six-speed automatic is optional with all but the R/T’s 2.4-litre unit. That engine can be had with an available six-speed automated manual gearbox. Base Darts are pretty basic, but on par with others in the category. The options list incorporates air conditioning, heated steering wheel, driver-selectable information screen, push-button start, soft Nappa leather seat covers, backup camera and trailer sway control that prevents your load from wiggling about.
2013 Dodge Charger
D
odge’s big four-door sedan looks as aggressive as it sounds, especially with the SRT8’s 470-horsepower V8 roaring; Rap artist steps in to tune the optional stereo. Dodge’s 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 delivers a bit more punch — exactly eight horsepower more — with impressive fuel efficiency, assisted by an optional eight-speed automatic transmission; 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is unchanged; AWD available on all but the potent SRT8 brings a 470-horse 6.4-litre V8 to play. Once the darling of the NASCAR circuit, Chrysler is pulling the plug on that specific racing program for 2013, ensuring there will be no more Charger and Challengerbranded “stock” cars for fans to root for. Still, the Charger remains an important member of Dodge’s lineup. In keeping with its racing heritage, a new cold-air induction system has been added to the 3.6-litre V6 that ups the output to 300 horsepower from 292. The upgrade is part of the Rallye Appearance Group or the Blacktop package (blacked out trim and a sport suspension), but otherwise the base V8 is still rated at 292 horsepower. The V6’s five-speed automatic transmission remains in service on base Chargers (it has been replaced with an eight-speed transmission in the similar Chrysler 300), while all others use an eight-speed automatic. A five-speed automatic transmission remains connected to the 370-horsepower 5.7-litre V8 installed as standard equipment in the Charger R/T. Both engines can be equipped with all-wheeldrive with its fuel-saving active transfer case with front-axle disconnect. To save fuel, the system unlocks the front wheels from the transfer case when they’re not needed and will automatically and seamlessly reconnect the front wheels when rear-tire slip is detected. The 5.7 also tries to temper the engine’s thirst for fuel by cutting off half the cylinders at idle and during low-load cruising. Meanwhile, the performance-
obsessed SRT8 gets the same 6.4-litre Hemi (392 cubic inches) V8 and five-speed automatic found in the Challenger, Chrysler and Jeep SRT models. Pushing out 470 horsepower, the engine turns the Charger into a brash American cruiser. Thankfully, the brakes are larger, the ride height has been lowered and suspension firmed up to ensure the SRT8 turns and stops as well as it accelerates. For additional rumbling noises, you can select the Beats by Dr. Dre audio package. This apparently famous Rap artist helped tune the optional 10-speaker sound system to complement the Charger’s interior and the musical tastes of its generally more youthful passengers.

DODGE
AUTO PREVIEW 2013 Wednesday, October 24, 2012 Penticton Western News
2013 Ram HD
M
ore towing and hauling muscle is in store for HD customers who demand plenty from these rigs, and Chrysler’s Ram truck division is happy to oblige with a beefed-up turbodiesel, tougher frames and greater all-around capacities. The 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is now the base engine for 3500-series trucks; three versions of the 6.7-litre six-cylinder Cummins turbo-diesel make 350, 370, and 385 horsepower and up to 850 pound-feet of torque. With General Motors, Ford and Chrysler trying to outdo each other in the heavy-truck category, you have to wonder where it will all end. The Ram 2500 and 3500 series pickups have upped the stakes with the optional Cummins turbo-diesel that’s available in bad, badder and baddest grades for 2013. The tamest of the 6.7-litre inline six-cylinder powerplants is rated at 350 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, while the intermediate version pushes those numbers up to 370 horsepower and 800 pound-feet. For maximum thrust and grunt, the 385-horse unit lays down a mind-numbing 850 pound-feet of torque. Could 1,000 be far off in future models? The Cummins can be matched to a six-speed manual transmission (the only shift-it-yourself in its class), or a six-speed automatic. The result is a truck that can haul and tow an inordinate amount of whatever you have; up to 7,727 kilograms
of trailer weight and up to 820 kilograms of tongue weight using a conventional Class V hitch. The turbo-diesel has a standard exhaust brake that uses the engine’s compression to help decelerate the vehicle. That means shorter stops and less brake wear. Another Cummins bonus is that the interval between oil changes is 24,000 kilometres. Still available is Chrysler’s venerable 383-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 with 400 pound-feet of torque. For 2013, the 3500-series HD can be ordered with the Hemi; previously it was exclusively installed in the 2500-series. Of course four-wheel-drive is available, but in the HD it has a disconnect feature that disengages the forward driveshaft from the transfer case when not needed, thus slightly reducing fuel consumption. All HD models have been fitted with new frames made using high-strength steel. The frame rails are now slightly wider for greater stability and a new steering linkage is designed to provide a bit more precision. Inside, owner/operators will also appreciate the all-new cab design, with a restyled dashboard with available touch-screen controls (with redundant switches) for the communications and climate control systems. The centre console has also been improved with added two-tier storage space. Regular, Crew and Mega cab models return, with a variety of box sizes and equipment levels that would make your head spin.
2013 Dodge Grand Caravan
W
ith five models to choose from and an on-the-road starting price of $21,500, Dodge makes a strong case for top minivan honours. Solid 3.6-litre V6 with six-speed automatic transmission posts respectable city and highway fuel-economy numbers. The minivan category’s high-selling glory days are well behind it, but demand for these rigs as a logical choice for families and as grandkid haulers for empty nesters remains strong. That’s especially true for Chrysler-built Town & Country and Grand Caravan units as well as key competitors Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. However if price is the object, combined with plenty of space and decent performance, the Grand Caravan has to be considered a top pick. Since its 2011 model-year updating, the GC now drives more securely and frugally with a revised suspension topped with low-rolling-resistance tires to help prop up fuel economy. At the same time, the interior was upgraded with new gauges and soft-touch dashboard and door-panel surfaces replacing hard plastic. The 3.6-litre “Pentastar” V6 that was introduced at the same time produces 283 horsepower and, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, easily runs with the minivan herd for fuel consumption. Inside, you’ll find the usual dozen or so cupholders plus a variety of small-item bins and pockets (including dual glove boxes) that showcase the vehicle’s utility. The standard third-row splitfolding bench seat can be power folded (as an option) to create a flat load floor. The Stow ‘n’ Go feature comes with a one-touch-down feature and provides out-of-sight storage bins when the second-row seats are left in their upright positions. The price-
leading Canada Value Package, heads the list of trim levels that also includes SXT, Crew, Crew Plus and the sporty R/T. The Canadian Value Package rings in at $21,500 and includes most of the basic features and safety systems you’d expect. At the top end, the $32,000 R/T comes with a tighter suspension. To get the extra-cost highdefinition Blu-Ray video system you need to opt for the R/T or the Crew trim levels.

2013 GMC Sierra HD
T
here are a ridiculous number of permutations and combinations of Sierra HD from the basic 2500 to a full-blown 3500 Denali “dually”. Base 360-horsepower 6.0-litre gasoline V8 can now be run on compressed natural gas; optional 6.6-litre turbo-diesel spools out 765 pound-feet of torque; six-speed transmissions all around. Under the skin, there’s very little to distinguish the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. But when it comes to styling, features and customers, the Chevy is mostly blue jeans and work boots while the Sierra is more the Armani-suit type, especially the fancy-dress Sierra Denali HD that was introduced for 2011. Surprisingly or not, the Denali (named for an Alaskan wilderness park) offers upscale-inclined truckers a wide range of pampering features, all attached to a 2500- (3/4-ton) and 3500- (one ton) heavy-duty pickup. These trucks are easy to spot with their unique four-bar grille design with round air inlets, polished forged-aluminum wheels, chrome exterior and interior trim, power-adjustable pedals, a Bose premium surround audio system and 12-way power seats. For more dress-up cachet, an optional heated steering wheel and heated-and-cooled leather-appointed seating can be added to the package. The Denali-badged trucks, as well as the rest of the Sierra HD lineup
in regular-, extended- and crew cab styles, can be had with the 360-horsepower 6.0-litre V8 or extracost 6.6-litre turbo-diesel (preferred by the vast majority of Sierra HD purchasers) that kicks out 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet torque. Both engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions. The HD can pull up to 8,150 kilos using a trailer hitch, or 10,400 kilos with a bed-mounted fifth wheel. For added work capability, the HD’s front suspension combined with its extra-stout ladder frame allows for a 2,720-kilogram front-axle weight rating, which is enough so that the optional snow-plow accessory package can now be added to all HD trucks equipped with four-wheel-drive. At the opposite end, the leaf-spring setup provides a maximum gross rear-axle weight rating of 2,800 kilograms for 2500-series trucks and up to 4,250 kilos for 3500-series trucks. Along with the HD’s enhanced toting and hauling capacities, the newly standard 136-litre-capacity fuel tank means that turbo-diesel versions have an 1,100-kilometre cruising range. For 2013, the 6.0-litre V8 can be optioned with a compressed-natural-gas fuel system, although you lose some power and torque in the process. As is the case with all GMC pickups, the level of content, body and powertrain customization is practically limitless, guided only by your specific needs and budget.

2013 GMC Terrain
W
ell, we knew it was inevitable . . . Terrain Denali for 2013. An efficient 2.4-litre four-cylinder drives the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, which does double duty to deliver power from the new 3.6-litre V6; all-wheel drive available with either engine. If you don’t find the regular Terrain flashy enough, GMC has the ticket for 2013. Its ultra-luxurious Denali sub-brand is now available on its smallest vehicle. More chrome on the broad grille and exhaust pipes, satin touches, unique lights, and body-coloured fascias and rocker moldings highlight the exterior, while softer leather on the seats, doors, and steering wheel, along with “smoked” mahogany inserts differentiate the cabin from lesser trims. However, unlike other Denali models, the Terrain version can be had with either the standard 182-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder or the new 301-horsepower 3.6-litre V6. Despite the lat-
ter’s big bump in power and torque, it has the identical 12.4/8.1 l/100 km rating as the older 3.0-litre unit. All Terrains get six-speed automatic transmissions and both engines can be had with front- or optional all-wheel-drive. Towing capacity for the four-cylinder is 680 kilograms, while the V6 is rated for 1,500. Base SLE models feature the usual air/tilt/power accessories along with a few unusual standard features such as a rear-vision camera and 12 months of OnStar, GM’s remote help and courtesy concierge service. All four-cylinder Terrains come with Active Noise Cancellation that uses microphones to detect noise. The system responds by emitting counteracting and continuous sound waves through the audio system. For 2013, there’s a new safety package with forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning and rear-parking assist. For buyers looking to ease into the entry-utility bracket, or for those wanting to downscale from their previous full-size perches, the feature-laden Terrain is worth a look.

O
ne of Buick’s most lasting designs has been enhanced and sharpened; eight-passenger cruiser delivers more luxury and quiet than ever. The 288-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 has direct fuel injection; hooked to a six-speed automatic transmission. The thought of an eight-seat Buick people-mover being popular would have been laughed at a decade ago. But the stylish, luxurious Enclave is a genuine hit. For 2013, it gets a thorough refresh inside and out. Everything forward of the A-pillar is all new, including sharper headlamps, LED running lights and more prominent fenders. The rear is familiar, although now accented by light-emitting-diode (LED) taillights. The vehicle’s impressive utility is unchanged thanks to three rows of seats with room for either seven or eight riders, depending on configuration. The second row slides to provide access to the spacious back row that’s actually habitable by adults. A twist of the key fires a 288-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 that operates through a six-speed automatic transmission. The Enclave begins as a front-wheel-driver, but all-wheel-drive is optional. As befits a Buick, the Enclave is all about luxury as well as practicality. Even base models include enough features to make Germancar owners jealous, and the Enclave’s new instrument panel, ambient lighting and softer materials will make them even more steamed. Safety is covered with seven airbags (including the industry’s first centre-mounted airbag that protects from off-side crashes), a rear back-up camera, traction and stability control (to prevent a skid or spin) and a year’s worth of OnStar, GM’s satellite-based live-voice assistance centre. New safety tech for 2013 includes available blind-spot warnings and rear cross-traffic alerts. Moving up the trim ladder adds perforated-leather seats (heated in front) with memory, 19- or 20-inch wheels and fancier trim. A wide assortment of features can be ladled on such as DVD navigation, skylight-style sunroof, a new 10-speaker touch-screen audio package and a DVD entertainment system. Heated and cooled driver and front passenger seats can be had as a stand-alone option.

SUBARU XV
www.pentictonwesternnews.com
AUTO PREVIEW 2013 Wednesday, October 24, 2012 Penticton Western News
Crosstrek
A
n Impreza by another name alters its style to resemble a junior edition of the Subaru Outback, and it works. Nothing overly special here, just the Impreza’s impressive and economical 2.0-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine with 148 horsepower at the ready; choose from a five-speed manual transmission, or a continuously variable (CVT) option. Is this Subaru for real? Or is the new XV Crosstrek arriving this fall just faking it? Just when you think the Japan-based automaker has settled down and become a conservative member of the community, it ratchets up the funkiness and creates this bold and brash off-roader-style Impreza wagon. In reality, the Crosstrek’s maximum tasks include rough road and weather conditions and some limited off-trail adventuring. Anyone familiar with Volvo’s XC70 wagon will think of this Subie as a scaled-down and less expensive copycat as well as sharing kinship with the current Subaru Outback wagon. Subaru has provided the Crosstrek with its own distinctive nosepiece, bumpers, roof rails, side cladding and rear spoiler. The meaner macho look is completed with darker window tinting and a set of 17-inch all-season tires mounted to custom-look rims. The slightly bigger front
brake rotors add stopping power and a hiked-up suspension provides 22 centimetres of ground clearance, which is nearly eight centimetres more than the Impreza. That should be plenty for straddling rock-strewn terrain and fording shallow streams. The Crosstrek is fired up with a 148-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that comes straight out of the Impreza. Also Impreza-based is a five-speed manual transmission that has Incline Start Assist to prevent the Crosstrek from rolling backward when moving your right foot from the brake to the gas pedal while stopped on a hill. Optional is a continuously variable unit with paddleshifters that operate six pre-set ratios. An ECO gauge that encourages fuel-saving driving habits is included with either transmission. The standard all-wheel-drive systems are, not surprisingly, Impreza-based. Manual-gearbox models split the torque 50:50 in normal driving situations, but will apportion up to 80 percent to either front or rear wheels when slippage is detected. With automatics, the Active Torque Split system maintains a 60:40 division, but automatically directs up to 100 percent of the torque to either set of wheels when necessary. It’s by no means a Jeep- or Land Rover-style rock-crawler, but for more typical outdoor activities, the XV Crosstrek is about as real as it gets.

s far as four-door sedans with German badges on them, it doesn’t get any less expensive than Jetta; challenging Toyota and Honda on their own turf. The 115-horsepower four-cylinder engine helps keep Jetta ownership affordable; a 2.5-litre five-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbo-diesel and 200-horse turbo-four-cylinder gas engine return; all-new hybrid features some unique powerplant technology. The Jetta has become VW’s hot seller. Dropping the price to make it competitive with other compact sedans helped, but a spacious interior and great handling was and still is a strong selling point. The price-leader Jetta functions with a 115-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that gets reasonable fuel economy. The 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder gas engine also returns as an option, but for serious fuel thriftiness opt for the 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (called the TDI) rated at 6.7 l/100 km in the city and 4.6 l/100 km on the highway. The performance-minded Jetta GLI returns with its 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and track-tuned suspension, big wheels and sticky tires. The gasoline engines are mated to fivespeed manual transmissions, or optional six-speed automatics, while the turbo-diesel offers a six-speed manual or optional six-speed automated manual DSG (short for Direct Shift Gearbox) transmission that eliminates the pesky torque converter, which means improved fuel economy and much quicker shifts that aid acceleration. The big news on the 2013 engine front is the launch of the Jetta Hybrid that uses a turbocharged 150-horsepower 1.4-litre four-cylinder gas engine in combination with a 27-horsepower electric motor for 170 net horses. The Hybrid’s torque flows through a seven-speed DSG. and it can reportedly run for up to 1.9 kilometres on electricity alone at speeds up to 70 km-h, reach 60-mph (96 km-h) from rest in less than nine seconds. There’s no report on expected fuel performance as of this writing. VW is on record as stating the company expects that hybrids will constitute three per cent of its total production by 2018, which means that the Passat, CC and upcoming 2014 Golf hatchback are likely candidates for this form of propulsion. Meanwhile, the smaller Jetta SportWagen that’s based on the older Golf platform basically carries over for 2013.

all is a very busy season for garages and mechanics as there are still many people who like to service their vehicle before the winter. While some people will make an appointment with their dealer, many others with older vehicles still rely upon their trusted mechanics to have a look at their car or truck before the cold season. Among the many points to be checked is the engine oil. For many people, oil is oil and that’s all there is to it. But for car specialists, oil is a very technical matter to handle and choos-
ing the right oil for their customers’ cars and trucks becomes a science for them. As a matter of fact, there are so many types of engine oils on the market, that today some knowledge is re-

cold months of winter. That’s why many car manufacturers will suggest a 5W30 engine oil during the cold season. The number 5 identifies the lightness of the oil when it is cold, the W indicates it is designed for winter use and the 30 means that when the engine has warmed up, the oil will have thickened to a 30 weight capability. The engine will then start more easily with the light oil and will be well protected at speed as the oil thickens slightly.

2013 Buick Verano
B
uick’s entry-level sedan feels anything but, thanks to generous equipment and silent cabin; new Turbo model a true performance machine. A 177-horsepower four-cylinder base engine combines with a six-speed automatic transmission; optional is a 250-horse turbo four-cylinder mated to a six-speed stick or sixspeed automatic. In its sophomore season, the Verano is expanding its excellent offerings to include a performance-minded turbo model that will nip at the heels of the larger and more expensive Regal GS. The Verano Turbo uses the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder as the GS, and despite putting out 10 fewer horses (250 versus 260 in Regal GS), is much quicker to 100 km/h from a standing start. It comes with all the toys that are optional on lesser models, including heated leather seats and steering wheel, a nine-speaker Bose-brand audio system with a new touch screen and costs $32,000 compared with the larger Regal at $43,000. Quite the bargain. Regular Verano models start at a much lower $24,000 and although base models come with leatherette (vinyl) and cloth seats, premium versions feature plenty of wood trim and overstuffed leather-
covered seat cushions. For any compact car, this is ground-breaking. The Verano’s designers say they’ve gone out of their way to make the cabin a place of exemplary peace and quiet. They’ve added five layers of acoustic material within the headliner, sound-absorbing foam and other insulating materials stuffed into every possible nook and cranny, all door openings triple sealed and the use of thicker windshield and side glass for additional noise reduction. Other sound-defeating measures include specially designed tires and alloy wheels plus “quiet-tuned” intake and exhaust systems for the standard 180-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission (there’s an optional six-speed manual for the Turbo). Other standard gear includes dual-zone climate control, a rear-view camera, 10 standard airbags and GM’s OnStar concierge and help line that can also activate various functions (open doors, check fuel level, etc.) from your smart phone. Also optional is a heated steering wheel, push-button start, electronic parking brake, premium Bose audio package and 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inchers are standard). New safety gear for 2013 includes optional cross-traffic alert and side blind-spot warning systems in most packages.

2013 Mazda CX5
M
azda’s all-new wagon takes its fun-to-drive and fuel-sipping roles seriously. A 155-horsepower four-cylinder is part of Mazda’s SkyActiv brand that will eventually be employed on all Mazda vehicles. If you’re looking to cheap out on fuel while still maintaining the quality of your ride, then the brand new Mazda CX-5 could be driving right up your alley. Replacing the longstanding Ford Escape-based Tribute wagon, the attractively designed five-passenger CX-5 also fills in for the gone-for-2013 CX-7. The majority of the CX-5’s mechanical bits are promoted under the “Skyactiv” name that made its initial appearance with the 2012 Mazda3. More than simply a marketing slogan, SkyActiv represents a holistic transformation of the powertrain plus various other components that help save fuel in addition to making Mazdas better driving machines. From a chassis and suspension perspective, the automaker’s engineers have attempted to in-
fuse the vehicle with as much MX-5 Miata-type sporty behavior as possible, combined with a highly efficient engine and transmission. The powerplant consists of a high-compression 2.0-litre four-cylinder that, due to its unique design, is able to run on low-grade 87-octane fuel and is lighter by 10 per cent than Mazda’s non-Skyactiv 2.0. Output is rated at 155 horsepower and 150 pound feet of torque, down from the Tribute’s 171/171 levels. However, the smaller-displacement CX-5 is slightly less paunchy so it all evens out a bit. Both sets of numbers are significantly improved over the Tribute and CX-7 and beat league-leaders Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson. Mazda hasn’t scrimped loading up even the most basic CX-5 Sport model. For $24,900, including destination charges, the base GX gets the usual air conditioning and power-operated items, along with cruise control and pushbutton start. Head up the line and you’ll find the GS and GT model, the latter of which comes with dual-zone climate control and leather seats.
2013 Mazda6
M
azda will be busy clearing out the last of the current crop of its mid-size sedans as a sparkling new-generation model is scheduled for a mid-2013 launch as a 2014 model. Base 2.5-litre four-cylinder is the economical choice; the 3.7-litre V6 from the CX-9 tall wagon is optional. Mazda has big plans for the next Mazda6 four door. That means wowza styling inside and out plus a couple of four-cylinder SkyActiv-technology powerplants that know how to wring the most out of every last drop of fuel. For now, however, there’s likely some great deals to be had on remaining 2013-designated models. The base engine is a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder while the optional 272-horse 3.7-litre V6 is borrowed from the CX-9 tall wagon. The four-cylinder can be had with a six-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic, while the V6 works exclusively with a six-speed automatic. As before, the lineup begins with the GS that comes with air conditioning, cruise control, overhead console tilt/ telescoping steering wheel, basic audio system and 16-inch wheels. Along with 18-inch wheels, the GT adds climate control, leather seats (heated and power adjustable in front), power moonroof, to name but a few of the upgrades. Buyers can also equip their 6s with a blind-spot monitoring system that detects traffic approaching from either side of the vehicle and cautions
the driver by activating a warning buzzer and flashing lights on the exterior mirror. On the option list are 18-inch wheels, a moonroof, Bose-brand audio package and a navigation system that comes with a rear-view camera and seven-inch touch screen.

AUTO PREVIEW 2013 Wednesday, October 24, 2012 Penticton Western News
2013 HYUNDAI SANTE FE
W
ould you like your Santa Fe in regular or super sized? For 2013, you get your choice of both. Two four-cylinder engines and one V6 available, depending on model selection; six-speed automatics are standard on all versions, along with AWD availability. Well, two sizes of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe are on the menu. Haven’t we seen this concept used somewhere else? Indeed we have. Mitsubishi recently took this direction for the 2011 model year with its RVR, which is a shortened version of the Outlander. On a grander scale, General Motors does the same with its Tahoe/Suburban big rigs and a number of minivans once offered similar long/short choices. For 2013 the shorter-wheelbase five-passenger Santa Fe Sport, arrives first, followed by the longer (by 22 centimetres) seven-passenger Santa Fe in early calendar 2013. The bigger Santa Fe is heftier than the Sport by more than 150 kilograms, which explains why it’s only available with a 290-horsepower 3.3-litre V6 that replaces the previously optional
274-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. Conversely, the Sport comes with a base 190-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder, or optional 264-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. In all cases the only transmission is a six-speed automatic with manual shift controls. Hyundai will let you add its latest all-wheel-drive setup with any Santa Fe you select. The system includes Torque Vectoring Corner Control (TVCC) that monitors driving conditions and can instantaneously direct the correct amount of power or braking force to any single wheel. TVCC assists in slippery conditions and provides added precision when negotiating turns. The Santa Fe features plenty of standard content plus unexpected treats, including Driver Selectable Steering Mode with Normal, Comfort (reduces steering effort by 10 per cent) and Sport (increases effort by the same amount) settings. Turbo models add performance suspension components (stiffer shocks and stabilizer bars), 19-inch wheels (17s are standard), fancier gauge cluster, push-button start and heated front seats.

2013 Toyota Tacoma
F
ew competitors are left in the sub-full-size class; Tacoma gets more luxurious with new Limited Package. Holdover 2.7-litre four-cylinder and truck-specific 4.0-litre V6. Talk about lonely. The Tacoma is very nearly the last pickup that doesn’t tower over every other vehicle on the road. Despite its relative age, Toyota unleashed a trickle of updates for 2012, including a very subtle reshaped grille and headlights, and new exterior mirrors. Under the long hood rests either a base 159-horsepower four-cylinder that could use an upgrade, or if towing/hauling is more of a concern, the Tacoma turns up the wick to the tune of 236 horsepower via the optional 4.0-litre V6. Outfitted with six standard airbags and traction and stability control to help keep the driver on track when the road surface becomes disagreeable, the Tacoma comes in the usual regular, extended Access-Cab and four-door Double-Cab models and your choice of rear-or four-wheel-drive for all.
2013 Toyota 4Runner
W
hile you might get farther with the FJ Cruiser, you’ll actually enjoy the drive in a 4Runner. A 4.0-litre V6 is the single source of power for the whole lineup. Toyota truck/SUV The 4Runner might get lonely with the Nissan Pathfinder and other smaller body-on-frame SUVs being redesigned with parking lots and commutes in mind. That’s because Toyota’s hard-working truck stubbornly refuses to bend in that direction. The 270-horsepower 4.0-litre V6 that as Goldilocks once famously declared “is just right” and it also earns a respectable 12.6 l/100 km in the city and 9.2 on the highway. Also standard equipment is a five-speedautomatic transmission. You get to choose between a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case, or upgrade at extra cost to a full-time unit with a locking centre differential controlled by a console switch. Base SR5 4Runners feature climate control, multi-adjustable power driver’s seat, eight airbags (including two front-knee inflatables) and chrome roof rails, while 4x4 models are also equipped with Hill Start Assist that keeps the vehicle from rolling backward when stopped on an incline and Hill Descent Control to prevent unintended acceleration on a downward slope. The Trail Edition lives up to its name by including a system that sets the vehicle at a specific speed while operating in low range over extremely rough ground. Instead of bouncing your foot back and forth between the brake and throttle, you just have to work the brake. As well, the Multi-terrain Select allows the driver to add or reduce the amount of wheel slip, depending on surface conditions such as loose sand or solid rock. An optional Trail Edition system disconnects the stabilizer bars for added suspension travel. Limited content includes a new Display Audio system with a touchscreen and on-screen apps (optional on lower trims), leather interior, 15-speaker audio system, backup camera and a sliding rear cargo deck that can support up to 200 kilograms. As was previously the case, a third-row seat can be added to all 4Runner models.
The box (available in two lengths) floor and walls in all cases is made of composite plastic that obviously won’t dent or rust. Up-level models also get hose-out heavy-duty all-weather flooring. The radio also gets upgraded with a larger eightcentimetre screen that doubles as the backup camera, and every Tacoma comes with Toyota’s new Entune mobile application and Bluetooth system. Adding a little class to the mix is a new Limited Package, which includes plenty of chrome inside and out, plus heated front sport seats, leather-trimmed steering wheel and more. Carry-over models include the TX and TX Pro packages, which include black bead-lock wheels, blacked-out tube sidesteps, and a custom exhaust. Then there’s the ground-hugging X-Runner that specializes in picking off sports cars at local mall-parking-lot autocross events. Packing a six-speed-manual transmission, tasty ground effects and a lowered stance, the X-Runner is a formidable driving tool that can haul more than lumber and tools to the job site.
2013 Toyota Tundra
T
oyota makes a run at luxurious Ford and GMC rivals with new Platinum package; only five combinations of cab, bed and drive after axing base V8. Sole choice in most is the hot-rod 381 horsepower 5.7-litre V8 found in even the most basic work truck; old 4.6-litre V8 only comes in base Double Cab models; six-speed automatic transmission with rear- or four-wheel drive. Despite finding only a fraction of new homes compared with the domestic automakers, the Tundra remains a strong contender. That’s helped immensely in 2013 by losing the lowerpower base engines and consolidating nearly every Tundra around the top-tuned 381-horsepower 5.7 V8. Only base Double Cab models come with the old 310-horsepower 4.6-litre V8. All models operate using six-speed automatic transmissions, with either rear- or fourwheel drive. Inside, the roomy cabins feature plenty of stowage-space with a computer-laptop-swallowing console plus a two-level glove box. For safety’s sake there are segment-first driver and front passenger knee airbags. Tundras continue to be available in your choice of Regular-cab, extended-length Double Cab and four-door CrewMax with its extra-sized rear doors. Four-wheel-drive is optional, but only if you specify a V8. The no-frills-no-carpetjob-site-only Work Truck Package features a vinyl-covered bench seat, old-school rubber floor mats and a simplified instrument panel. The exterior displays an all-black bumper and grille as well as non-power mirrors. At the opposite end of the spectrum there are numerous dress-up packages that can turn your Tundra into the most full-blown loaded-up rig that’s tailored for the job site. The new Platinum trim level (previously an option package) adds heated and ventilated seats, leather-trimmed surfaces, a navigation system, power moonroof and more. Just how strong is a Tundra? Enough to tow 133,000 kilograms of space shuttle down a stretch of L.A. freeway. If you haven’t already heard about it, check it on Youtube.
