Hollyhocks mark the spot for peace and serenity Kristen Douglas Black Press In the early 1980s Rex Weyler, one of the founders of Greenpeace International, stumbled upon some red hollyhocks.

Weyler, who had been told by a fortune teller that he would know he was in the right place when he saw the bright, vibrant English flower, knew right then and there that he had to scrape together what he could to purchase the abandoned Cold Mountain Institute – a former learning centre famous for its Gestalt therapy practises on Cortes Island.

In 1982 Weyler and a group of 30 friends and family purchased shares and bought the dilapidated buildings and property and in 1983 the facility officially opened with a new name – Hollyhock – and was offering an array of self-

“It’s primarily an educational facility established on the premise of giving people a chance to experience nature and be close to nature.”

All of the lodging is tucked away on wooded paths, with a choice of either a rustic cabin in the woods, a dormitory room to enjoy the company of others, or a spacious motelstyle room with all the amenities and breathtaking floor-to-ceiling views of the ocean and tall evergreen and cedar trees. Or you can even bring your own tent and camp under

the stars.

“People love it, I’ve heard people describe it as ‘camping in luxury,’” Obsoba says.

“It’s quiet, it’s private and at night you hear the owls. It’s very tranquil.”

Hollyhock retreat is all about making connnections From Page 3 the wind blowing and rustling through the trees. Evening is the perfect time to soak and relax in one of the two Hollyhock hot tubs, which are set at the top of a hill just above the ocean. If you look closely, you can see the lights of Powell River shining on the

horizon just across the water.

As daylight breaks, the clang of a large bell signals breakfast is ready. The first meal of the day, as is lunch and dinner, is served buffet-style and the vegetarian cuisine is all freshly picked from either the Hollyhock garden or supplied by local growers on

Cortes Island.

The garden, which feeds guests through the season, is one of the retreat’s main attractions.

“The whole garden is an organic garden,” says Osoba of the one-acre patch that grows kale, edible flowers, chives, herbs, tomatoes, carrots, and lettuce, just to name

It’s an assault on the senses with the smells and the bright colours.”

The facility is designed so guests have to walk down the garden paths to get to the main lodge where meals are served and guests can curl up with a good book in the small, cozy library.

There’s also a living room complete with a comfy couch and a warm, blazing fireplace.

The lodge itself is quaint with wood panelling and sets of honey-coloured tables and chairs you would expect to see in your kitchen. And if that doesn’t make you feel at home, taking your shoes off at the door will.

After leaving the lodge, guests make their way to one of the meeting rooms on campus where they indulge in sessions taught by a host of

Preparing kids to hit the streets COMOX VALLEY — The Comox Valley Cycling Coalition has been hitting the streets — and the elementary schools — to teach safe cycling skills to kids and adults.

The CVCC has been conducting safe cycling rodeos in Comox Valley elementary schools

since May. To date, about 745 Grade 1 to 4 students from seven different schools have participated in the rodeos.

Coalition president Margaret Harris says it’s important to start teaching kids safe cycling rules at a young age.

“If they’re on quiet streets, there are still things that they need to know — like stopping at stop signs, looking out for driveways, watching out when they go past a parked car — then they’ve got some of the very basics in there and then hopefully we can build on that.”

After receiving a federal grant from the New Horizons for Seniors Program in April, the Cycling Coalition started conducting the safe cycling rodeos and offering adult safe cycling courses.

Adult safe cycling courses include: CanBike 1, CanBike 2 and Urban Cycling Skills.

The three courses vary in length from five hours to two days, and are designed to help cyclists feel more comfortable riding in traffic, among other things.

Corticosteroids

are drugs that help to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation.

However, some recent research has shown that these medications don’t provide much more of a benefit than simply waiting and resting your arm.

Tennis elbow is a very painful and challenging condition to treat, but with a proper rehabilitation program generally the muscles of the elbow can be rebuilt to allow a return to normal

activities.

Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com The recent rain has raised the water levels in the Oyster and Quinsam Rivers and the Coho are on the move. I noticed the pools were very low and the Coho coming through Oyster River were quite visible in the morning. The fly fishing has been good in the upper pools using blue or green bodied flies. Rick Adams from Campbell River, had talked with some anglers from Finland who had hooked into two fish that morning.

The Campbell River has a steady run of Coho at the moment and on any given day fishing activity can be viewed from the bridge. Anglers from Italy spent a number of weeks fishing for salmon on the Campbell.

Michael O’Hara had a fishing trip last Sunday on a charter boat which headed north of Browns Bay. The Chum fishing season is here and the commercial boats were out in f force. full While the fishing was spotty the anglers on the boat had some nice sightings Porpoises of porpoises.

In the Courtenay area, the Puntledge River will be full of chum salmon and the banks will be lined with anglers throwing out lures in hopes of catching a fish for the smoker.

One of the yearly fishing social events is coming up this weekend, as the 2012 Browns Bay Charity Chum Derby is October 26th to the 28th. This derby will have people coming from all over the island, mainland and beyond hoping to win the top prize money for first second and third largest chum.

CFUW to take action on child poverty When Gail Nasadyk learned that child poverty in B.C. is the highest in the country, she decided to take action. Gail is the president of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) in the Comox Valley, which has been supporting local women for over 25 years by providing bursaries for postsecondary education.

On October 16, World Food Day, Gail chaired a panel discussion to help club members learn more about child poverty in the Campbell River and Comox Valley region.

The meeting began with a ‘poverty lunch’, simple fare that helped participants to think about children living in poverty.

“You’ll find lots of services and programs but sometimes it’s the simple things that get in the way, things like not having transportation to get to an event or a group.”

Gail Nasadyk concluded the meeting by challenging the members of the CFUW Comox Valley to take action on child poverty in the region.

“Let us do something together to make a difference in the lives of others,” she said.

Hometown girl comes to the rescue of after-school music PORT McNEILL— Georgia Murray has found success in her musical career. Now she’s giving back to a hometown that has not had a children’s music program for years.

Murray, raised in Port McNeill and now based in Victoria, has launched Wild Heart Music, an after-school music program that will feature choir and, eventually, instrumental instruction to local youth who have been without a school program for years.

“After playing a concert in my hometown of Port McNeill I had about a dozen kids come up to me expressing a desire to be in choir and learn an instrument but had no opportunity to do so,” said Murray, who played with several

The music program at Port McNeill’s Sunset Elementary School was cut in the past decade.

Several attempts to fill the void have been undertaken since, but none of them has been able to stick. For several years, Sunset teacher Shawn Gough conducted weekly evening rehearsals of the Pacific Winds, a youth band made up of former student musicians. The group made multiple appearances in the Vancouver Island Music Festival and in 2007 played at the national Music Fest Canada, when it was held in Richmond.

Planning dream vacations a dream job in itself For some, a dream job would be a vacation planner – for themselves!

Vacationing in B.C. can take so many forms that it would indeed be a full-time job.

The tourism and hospitality industry is an extremely diverse industry with over 400 different occupations – including occupations that lead to longerterm careers, as well as those that fit well for those seeking part-time work, like students or older workers who are not yet ready to retire.

British Columbiaʼs tourism industry will be a leader in provincial job growth as businesses look to fill 101,000 new job openings by 2020, according to a study of labour demand and supply by go2, the BC tourism industryʼs human resource association.

The Tourism

Labour Market Strategy, released in the spring of 2012 by go2, sets out the plan to recruit, retain and train the workers needed to keep pace with the growth projected for the industry. Nearly half of the 101,000 openings will be new jobs created by the tourism industry across the province, adding 44,220 more jobs to the provincial workforce by 2020. The other approximately 57,000 openings are due to replacements (i.e. retirements).

“The labour strategy co-ordinated by go2 is a key pillar of industry growth in the province.

Without it, we simply wouldnʼt have the skilled workers in place to deliver the visitor experience throughout BC,” says Lana Denoni, Chair of TIABC, the Tourism Industry Association of British Columbia.

British Columbiaʼs location, bordered by the Rocky Mountains on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west, makes it unique within Canada.

Its mountain and coastal scenery, opportunities for summer sailing, winter skiing, and other activities such as fishing or sightseeing in coastal or inland waters or experiencing our vibrant cities all make us a world-class destination. Tourism helps to diversify our economy and also brings new community

services to permanent residents.

BCʼs tourism and hospitality industry is now the single largest “primary resource industry” in the province, generating an annual real GDP ($2002) of more than $6.4 billion in 2010, ahead of forestry, mining, oil and gas extraction, and agriculture.

Tourism and hospitality generated $13.4 billion in annual revenue in 2010. Overall, between 2004 and 2010, industry

revenues grew by a total of 25.5 per cent, representing an average annual growth rate of 4.2 per cent.

The provincial governmentʼs Gaining the Edge: A Five-year Strategy for Tourism in British Columbia targets revenue growth of five per cent a year that will top $18 billion in tourism spending by 2016. The fastest growing sectors for tourism job growth over the next decade are expected to be recreation and entertainment and travel services.

There are an estimated 17,943 tourism-related businesses across the province, employing about 260,000 workers, or 10.8 per cent of B.C.ʼs total labour force of 2.4 million people.

“After several years of slow labour growth, the tourism industry is poised to expand,” said Arlene Keis, Chief Executive Officer of go2.

“Labour shortages are already being felt in places like Northern B.C., the Thompson Okanagan and in the Rockies regions. By 2016, the crunch will be more acute throughout the province.”

“The tourism industry often provides people with their important first job and sets them on their career path,” said Keis. “Tourism is also the largest employer of youth, with one in four British Columbians under the age of 24 working in

the industry.”

“This anticipated growth in tourism reinforces the need to plan carefully and ensure that there are enough workers with the right skills in the right communities to meet the tourism industryʼs future labour needs,” said Keis.

The Legion assists with purchasing medical equipment, awarding bursaries for needy students, providing support services such as mealson-wheels and drop-in centres and helping with some basic residential repairs to
