How to clean hardwood floors (MS) -- Over the years, home interior trends have continued to change. Whatʼs popular one year might seem dated the next. Hardwood floors, however, are one popular trend that has managed to maintain its popularity. Renters and homeowners alike are head over heels for hardwood floors, enjoying their aesthetic appeal and their tendency to never go out of style, particularly when compared to other flooring alternatives. Hardwood floors can also be much easier to maintain. Whereas carpets are susceptible to hard-toremove stains and dirt that might never go away, hardwood floors can be very easy to clean, maintaining their “good as new” look for years if homeowners take simple steps to keep them clean. • Be diligent on a daily basis. Hardwood floors are typically easier to maintain than carpet, but that doesnʼt mean homeowners should be lax with regards to hardwood floors. Some daily maintenance can significantly increase the floorʼs life expectancy. Should any spills occur, clean up after them immediately to avoid warping. In addition, address any scuff marks at night after dinner. When it rains or snows outside, make sure no one wears their shoes around the home inside. A dry microfiber mop will keep the floor clean and looking good while ensuring there is no water damage. It might not be necessary to mop every day, but homeowners who want to extend their floorʼs life can use a broom or vacuum to keep their floor dirt-free. • Periodically give the floor a thorough cleaning. It isnʼt necessary to give the floor a thorough cleaning every night before going to bed. However, every so often thoroughly clean the floor beyond dry mopping or vacuuming. Check with the manufacturer before doing anything, as the type of floor will dictate which is the best approach. Some manufacturers suggest certain polishes or cleaning solutions, while others advise against such options. When purchasing a care kit for wood floors, be careful to read the ingredients first. Renovating bathrooms is commonly at the top of home improvement to-do lists. Though some rooms around the house may remain timeless, bathrooms, like kitchens, show their age (and era) much more easily, which could be why homeowners are always on the lookout for new ideas. Although many people may dream about creating a spa-type oasis in their homes, not everyone is lucky enough to have a large bathroom, much less a large budget for a fullscale renovation. Small bathrooms are common, particularly in older homes, but they neednʼt force homeowners to compromise on style when renovating. Small bathrooms may be a halfbath on a main home level or even a full bath, depending on the home. By thinking creatively, homeowners can maximize their spaces and redo bathrooms in ways that bring out their best assets.
• When space is at a premium, itʼs best to look for fixtures and items that fit with the scale of the bathroom. Although you may want a
large vanity and cabinet in which to hide all of your toiletries, this simply may not be practical -- taking up most of the bathroom real estate. Instead, look for elegant pedestal sinks that have a much smaller profile. Theyʼll also help you control the clutter in the bathroom because there wonʼt be anywhere to hide it.
• Use optical illusions to make the bathroom appear more roomy. For example, lay tile diagonally to create the impression of space. A large mirror will reflect the room back and make it appear much larger than it really is.
• Select lighter hues in paint colors and accessories. Dark paints and fixtures could make the room feel cramped. Instead, think light and bright and the room will instantly feel more airy. • Minimize wall hangings and keep fixtures smaller. Use decorative items sparingly. • If possible, store towels in a closet outside of the bathroom. shower, in smaller bathrooms this may not be possible. Instead, look for a combined shower and bath, or select a walk-in shower with a much smaller profile. • Maximize wall space if you need storage. Find cabinets that will fit beneath windows or be able to fit in thin areas between sinks and toilets. Over the toilet is prime area for cabinetry. • Consider a frameless shower. This is a partitioned area of the bathroom thatʼs set aside for the shower and is typically only cordoned off by a thin wall or piece of glass. Or a shower with no walls at all is the ultimate in space-saving. The entire bathroom floor is decked out in tile, and a portion is sloped toward a shower drain. • Think about installing a skylight if you prefer natural light, but there is no room for a traditional window. Thinking creatively can help turn a cramped bathroom into a spacesaving and well-designed room homeowners desire.

Often referred to as “winterizing,” the process is meant to ensure a home can withstand harsh winter weather while proving a safe haven from the elements. As autumn arrives, homeowners can take several steps to get their homes ready for whatever winter has to offer with the following tasks.

A home with many leaks will be much colder to inhabit, and homeowners typically turn up the heat to counter drafts. But turning up the thermostat isnʼt the answer. Homeowners have a host of options at their disposal to plug leaks, be it door sweeps that block air from entering under exterior doors to caulk applied around leaky windows. When using caulk outdoors, be sure to use a weather-resistant caulk or, if sealing brick, use masonry sealer. * Add insulation upstairs. Homeowners who have an attic in their homes might want to consider adding some insulation up there. Experts recommend a minimum of 12 inches of insulation in the attic. That might prove costly, but a poorly insulated attic is akin to opening the front door and letting the heat out. It might be best for less-than-handy homeowners to hire a professional to insulate the attic. But do-it-yourselfers might find it good to know that if the ceiling joists, which are often 11 inches or less, are visible, then the attic is in need of additional insulation. Such joists wonʼt be visible in an adequately insulated attic. * Put up the storm windows. Itʼs nice to open the windows in the spring and summer and let the warm air waft in through the screens. But when summer is over, itʼs time to put up the storm windows once again. Storm windows add an extra layer of protection from the elements and are especially valuable in homes with single-pane glass windows. Homeowners who donʼt have storm windows should consider upgrading their existing windows. Such a project isnʼt cheap, but newer windows will almost certainly lead to lower heating costs, meaning
the project will essentially pay for itself over time. Homeowners who canʼt afford to replace all of their windows donʼt have to replace them all at once. Instead, replace them a few at a time and make the rooms where you spend the most time each winter the first on the list to receive new windows. * Be diligent with the gutters. Clean gutters will allow snow and rain to effectively drain through the gutters. If the gutters are clogged, snow might have nowhere to go when it begins to melt, and roof damage might result. Such damage is costly but preventable in most instances. One of the easier preventive measures to take is to routinely clean the gutters of leaves and other debris that accumulate during the fall. When cleaning the gutters, make sure they are properly aligned. Poorly aligned gutters can lead to a host of problems. One such problem is flooding. If downspouts are not properly aligned with the rest of the gutters, then water might not be directed away from the home as itʼs intended. Instead, water might be directed toward the home, resulting in flooding or additional water damage. * Have the furnace cleaned. Experts recommend annual furnace cleanings. Before cold weather arrives, turn the furnace on to make sure itʼs still working. An unpleasant odor should appear when first turning on the furnace, but it shouldnʼt last very long. If the odor sticks around, turn the furnace off and call a professional. Once winter arrives, routinely replace the filters. This makes the furnace operate more efficiently and can also reduce the risk of fire.

Don’t be afraid of PATTERN (MS) -- Many homeowners want to introduce pattern to their rooms but donʼt know where to start. They may wonder if two patterns match or how to determine scale. It may take a little practice, but using pattern is easier than one may think.

* Modern: Mix stripes and geometric patterned items in splashes of color to add a modern feel to a room. Individuals can experiment with patterns to make a room more personalized and less of a neutral blank page. If it proves difficult to come up with patterns that work together, look at design magazines or books for some inspiration.

Here are some ideas: Take inventory of your room and determine what items – perhaps a lamp shade, table or wall shelves – could enjoy a bit of flair with new colours and design. Once youʼve determined your pieces, all youʼll need is a Primer and Indoor/Outdoor Spray Paint in your favourite colours, masking tape, a ruler, craft scissors and masking paper.

Before getting started, be sure to thoroughly clean all surfaces. If possible, separate parts that wonʼt be painted (i.e. remove lamp shade from base). Next, spray all surfaces to be painted with primer and allow time to dry. Once dry, spray all surfaces with the dominant colour, repeating coats until the desired coverage is achieved, and allow to dry. Now for the design fun: With a ruler and pencil draw a chevronshaped pattern onto masking paper. Cut out the bottom edge of the chevron with craft scissors.

This will be used as a template to aid in placement of masking tape on projects. Using the template, mask off the areas that will remain the dominant color, leaving the new chevron pattern area open. Next, spray the open areas with primer. Once dry, spray with several light coats of a chosen accent colour, until the desired coverage is achieved. When dry, remove all masking paper and tape. Many bathrooms and kitchens have plenty of overhead light, but are often lacking when it comes to task lighting, says David Martin, designer with lighting manufacturer Hubbardton Forge. “At the kitchen sink, for example, you can eliminate shadows by including two sources of light,” says Martin. The result is a workstation with easier-to-see spaces that alleviate eyestrain. • Include mood-enhancing lights and dimmers. “Places such as bathrooms and bedrooms – once mostly functional – now serve as an extension of our living spaces,” says Todd Phillips, owner and senior designer with Quoizel Lighting. The lights in those rooms should be both hardworking and mood enhancing. For example, inexpensive, easy-to-install cove lights in the kitchen can provide soft illumination after mealtime and cleanup. Additional lights placed at a bathroom vanity and aimed out toward the face can help brighten grooming tasks and offer awakening morning light. A bonus: Those controls can help accommodate varying levels of natural daylight, too.

Living in a well-lit room is a much more pleasurable experience than trying to cook, read, entertain or do just about anything in a dark, shadowy space. The American Lighting Association offers the following tips for improving the lighting in your kitchen, bathroom and bedroom.

• Increase the size of your bedside task light. One of the bigger mistakes Phillips sees in bedrooms is the size of bedside lamps – they are either too small or not adjustable. “The
lamp needs to provide light where you need it, and if itʼs too small it canʼt do that,” says Phillips. Go for a larger size with increased lumen capacity. • Install track lighting for flexibility. Stationary overhead lights are fine when you need to flood a space with light, but too often kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms lack flexible sources of light. A good solution is track lighting. “You can direct one or two of the lights on the track and point them to a wall to add accent light for artwork, and use other lights on the track to create different focal points,” Phillips says. • Add a light fixture for drama. A side benefit of beautiful, light-providing chandeliers and pendants is that they provide focal points. “New light sources give homeowners some great options,” says Phillips. “You can drop in a chandelier over a bathtub to create drama and get mood and ambience too.” As a bonus, those fixtures help provide the finishing touch for different colors and accents. “People sometimes put quite a lot of money and effort into their rooms and lighting can help to show them to their best effect,” says Martin. • Add a ceiling fan with a light source. With the flip of a switch, a ceiling fan with a light kit can improve a roomʼs livability with both comfort and light. Canadian homeowners seeking energy efficient alternatives to forced air heating (NC)—A recent national survey reveals Canadian homeowners donʼt just want a warm home this winter − they want an energy-efficient one. According to the Beautiful Heat survey, an online study of 1,003 Canadian homeowners, an overwhelming 88 per cent of Canadians surveyed report something about their heating system bothers them in the winter, including high heating bills, uneven and inconsistent distribution of heat, cold floors and dry air. The survey reveals 84 per cent of Canadian homeowners would like to make changes to the heating system in their house, with over half reporting they would like to eliminate hot and cold spots, have more consistent temperature and more even distribution of heat throughout their home. In addition, 44 per cent of respondents said if they could only change one thing about their home heating it would be to have lower heating
bills, almost one half would like a more energy efficient system and almost one quarter would like to have heated floors. One-in-five homeowners would like to have the ability to adjust heat in high or low traffic areas through zone control options.
