with a second edition of Living 60+. The response from our readers to our first edition was very positive. That is certainly encouraging to all of the contributors and staff who wrote the stories, worked with the advertisers and packaged the magazine together.

In this edition we feature a profile of Global TV personality Wayne Cox. Wayne sat down with us and discussed his prolific career spanning forty years behind the microphone and in front of the camera.

I spent a memorable morning with the Davis family of Milner.

Their interview takes you just past the City limits to one of the last working dairy farms in our community. Their frank discussion of the past, present and future of dairy farming will no doubt bring back some memories for our readers.

We have some discussions about marriage in the golden years from Lillian Fuller. Carla Robin, Janice McTaggart and Mel Kositsky take the opportunity to introduce you people who have made a difference in the community and provide some food for thought on issues facing seniors today. Barb Pelley will discuss fitness and health and Mike Harvey offers a solemn reminder not to forget our veterans.

The evening weather forecast is popular for more reasons than one. “A few years back we started wishing a Happy Birthday to folks celebrating a one hundredth birthday. After all the Queen and The Prime Minister did it, so why shouldn’t we? In the beginning, we had maybe one a week, now it is daily and often more than one per day. It’s a good thing for the family. We got some request to do fiftieth anniversaries but we could see this could get out of hand so we kept it to just the birthdays.”

It’s located at the Orpheum Theatre and we have brass plaques on Granville Mall. It’s a great recognition.”

How long will we see Wayne Cox on the News Hour? Wayne is quick to point out that nothing lasts forever. “My contract was up at the end of August, and there are plans underway to make shift changes for all the weather people, due to the new 24/7 news channel that Global is planning to have up and running January 1st. The new shifts require longer hours and more work. At this stage in my career, I’m looking for shorter hours and less work. More time to enjoy our place at Green Lake and golf in Phoenix.

“Family is important to me. I have had a lot of support during my career, both at work and at

home. My wife and I have been married for twenty-one years and we have two sons, a daughter and six grandchildren. They all live close by so we see each other on all the special occasions. My daughter is off to Uvic this fall so that will be different but Vancouver Island isn’t that far away.”

“I have a four month contract extension that goes to the end of December. After that I’ll be jumping back into the freelance pool and hopefully keeping busy doing commercials and voice over work.”

If it rains on one of his golf days, we wonder if he’ll phone and complain to the weather man.

The pictures of your grandchildren’s graduations or birthdays are flying from one computer to another. The new baby pictures have been seen by relatives overseas before Grandma sees them right here at home. The days of opening a letter and getting photographs in the mail are gone.

Colin Brett teaches an introductory computer class at the Seniors Resource Society on Wednesday and Saturday morning. “I try to take the frustration out of using your computer,” says Colin. “I work with them to target exactly what it is they want to learn, how to open and close files, how to use the mouse, where to find things.”

“I teach them that using the computer is like going to the library.

Opening the computer files is like taking books off the shelves. The trick is to remember to close the files and put them away before you shut down just like putting the books back on the shelves before you leave the library.”

The private one-on-one classes are designed to work at your pace. “Some people only take one lesson to get a basic understanding, others want to learn more in depth or just take a bit longer, I recommend at least two sessions.”Colin explains.

“Just learning how to turn the device on and off and show them that it isn’t a big problem if they click on the wrong thing, gives

them confidence to get on the internet or even set up a Facebook page.”

Colin sticks with the simple classes and works at the student’s pace. The Facebook and more advanced classes are taught by Joe Smith on Monday mornings.

While the younger generation uses Facebook for social networking, there are other uses that may suit the older crowd.

It can be a great way to catch up with long lost buddies or find special deals or bargains. There are games to sharpen the mind and the dexterity and of course, it’s a great way to catch up on what all of family is doing at home or on vacation. It’s a great way to narrow the generation gap.

Learning to surf the web mela Gee, is 84 years old. “I used the checkout program at the library and I was a touch typist for many years so I’m coming here with a bit of computer knowledge. I just want to find out what I can do and maybe get some more use out of the computer.”

Colin points out, “If they can learn to surf the web with confidence, send and receive e-mails, organize and save files or photos then the computer becomes useful. I encourage them to use SKYPE to communicate with family as well.”

Colin is endeavouring to start a Sudoku club as well. “It is easy to learn both on paper and the computer and it’s a great game for keeping the mind sharp. I teach them how to have fun.”

Computer classes for seniors and beginners are part of most Continuing Education classes and are also offered at other Recreation Centres in the community. o “It’s a great way to find old buddies!” – Explain to your senior friend how easy it is to catch up with long lost friends. Many elderly people are reconnecting with long-

lost friends via Facebook.[7] If you have any examples, provide them, especially if they involve elderly people.

“It’s a way that you can keep in touch with me and the rest of the family!” – Show your senior friend photos, status updates, and other family information that they can tap into and keep abreast of as family grows, travels, achieves successes, etc.

“X celebrity uses it!” – Name their favorite celebrity, politician, poet, author, sportsperson, etc., and show them his or her account. Explain how they can be a fan of this person on Facebook, such as Susan Boyle.[8] “You don’t need to remember anyone’s email, let alone email them!” – Show how they can keep up with friends just by using Facebook.

“You can get free deals, specials, etc., from your favorite stores and companies!” – Show them how they can find vouchers, coupons, special deals etc., by becoming fans of certain company sites.

o “You can play games on Facebook!” – Take the time to show them games and apps like Farmville on Facebook that might pique their curiosity.[9] Growing numbers of seniors are enjoying Facebook games, which has the added benefit of exercising the brain and hand muscles.[10] o “Facebook can narrow the generation gap.”[11] - Throw this one in to show you think granddad’s as hip as you! ~ Jim McGregor

Davistead The Dairy Farm at the Edge of the City

L

David, Nicole and Hugh Davis — the past and present of Davistead

ess than a mile from some of the newest residential housing developments in Langley you’ll come across a ninety acre field of corn and a sign proclaiming ‘Davistead - Established 1882.’ If you turn the corner and drive a bit you see a small sign in Hugh Davis’ yard that says it very simple, ‘This is Davis Country.’

Davistead is now owned by Hugh Davis and his son and daughter-in-law Township Councillor David Davis and his wife Nicole. From Hugh’s dining room table you can look out over the dairy farm with Milner and Mt. Baker in the background. The smell of fresh brewed coffee and home baked cookies takes you back to simpler times when Langley was mostly farms and life moved a bit slower.

Hugh puts it into perspective, “ I can recall when there used to be over ninety farmers shipping milk from just right here on Willoughby Hill, now there are less than twenty in Langley altogether. Twenty-five years ago there were over three thousand milk producers in B.C. Today there are less than five hundred.”

The Davis farm has a long history relates Hugh. “The farm we are on now was originally part of the two thousand acre Hudson Bay Farm. A fellow by the name of Ron Dunn bought some of the land and then My Grandfather Henry Davis got a special grant to buy a hundred acres if he could clear it in a certain amount of time. He surprised them all when he cleared it in less time than he had been given.”

“He baled hay, which was his big crop. His biggest customers

were the bigger cities like New Westminster where all the bread wagons, milk wagons and fire wagons were horse drawn and he supplied the feed.”

In the early 1900’s Hugh’s Father Leslie Davis managed the land as a mixed farm. “He was known as the ‘Turnip King of Milner,” Hugh says smiling. “He had five kids all born in the same house and we all worked with the chickens, pigs, or in the potato fields or the orchard. We were one of the few farms around that had electricity and in the thirties dad bought our first milking machine.”

“We were milking forty to sixty cows but we still had to go to local picnics or out the fall fairs as far away as Agassiz. All members of the family worked the farm and we all had to do our part.”

Today the Davis farm milks over two hundred cows. “We go eighteen hours a day, its go, go, go,” says David. “We have a real challenge getting people to work on the farms now. Its dirty work, it’s hard work and not a lot of people want to take that on.”

David explains that there are other challenges trying to farm in an urban area as well. “The roads are very busy now and we have difficulty moving our farm equipment from one filed to another.

With all the residential developments we have to try to be good neighbours. We let people know when we are going to spread manure or they might call us and tell us they have something special going on. We try to work around that but we have deadlines too.”

Prices can vary depending on the milk and the amount of protein and butterfat it contains. The prices of quotas are one of the reasons why it is almost impossible for new farmers to enter the business.”

When asked if they are the future of Davistead, the family is optimistic.

“The kids are a very active part of the farm. One of the boys knows all about animals, the other knows all about the equipment.

They are in 4-H and we hope they keep the interest and take over. But it will have to be a different type of farming to survive. We may have to eventually re-locate if the residential developments take over.”

was a black and white cat who followed Mary around the house and she loved him. When the day came to put him down it was one of the worst days of her life and she swore she would never get another cat.

Jack looked longingly at the Yellow Lab. He missed his friend and was thinking about adopting another companion. But he was moving to a retirement community soon and he wasn’t sure if they would let him bring a dog, especially such a big one.

Pet ownership is a joy and a responsibility.

Studies have shown that for seniors having a pet is one of the best ways to preserve health and vitality. There’s no doubt that owning a pet is beneficial to a person’s overall health but caring for a pet in one’s golden years is a far different situation than in younger days.

I spoke to a veterinarian, a long time pet owner and the Executive Director of the local Animal Shelter. They offered a few suggestions to mull over if you want to adopt a dog or a cat.

Planning

is Everything

Everyone agreed that making a plan should be your first step. One of the first things to

think about is what kind of pet would be the best choice. Another consideration is what will happen to that pet should he or she outlive you or if you could no longer care for the animal. In their 70’s Harry and Pat Smith have made plans for Joshua, their Cairn Terrier if this should happen. “Harry and I have made arrangements in our wills and we have discussed our wishes with our veterinarian and our breeder to make sure that Joshua is looked after,” she said.

Sean Baker, the Executive Director of the Patti Dale Animal Shelter agrees this is very good planning. “Many people just assume that their friends or family will take their pet should the unfortunate happen. But this isn’t always the case and various circumstances like pet fur allergies can prevent a family member or friend from adopting the animal. Ultimately the pet could end up at our shelter” he said.

Something else to think about is that perhaps in a few years you may be downsizing and moving into a smaller home. Getting a large breed of dog wouldn’t be the ideal choice and small lap dogs like Pomeranians and Poodles might be a better idea but remember that if not properly trained small dogs can be prone to barking. A cat might be a better choice. It could be that you’ve decided to move into a retirement community. It would be a good idea to check what their pet policies are because they all differ.

It would be heart wrenching to get a pet, fall in love with it and then have to give it up.

The cost of pet care is not cheap. Right off the bat you have the cost of spaying and neutering. A pet needs to have a yearly veterinary check and as the animal ages veterinarians suggest that this should increase to twice yearly. Including its yearly vaccinations your dog or cat, even if they live indoors will need to be vaccinated for rabies.

Another thing to think about is what will happen if your pet gets a chronic condition like diabetes? The cost of care is very high.

One senior recently had to spend $5,000.00 to diagnose and treat his pet’s illness.

Sometimes in the case of older and sick animals, euthanasia is the only kind option.

Some veterinarians will come to your home to administer the injection. “This will spare you and your pet a stressful visit to the clinic.” said Dr. Irene O’Brien, a local veterinarian. Having been through this 11 times, Pat and Harry Smith agree that to say good bye is very traumatic. “It leaves a hole in your heart, believe me,” said Pat Smith. “However as time passes and the pain of loss becomes less Harry and I start to weigh the pros and cons of having another life with us again, and the pros always win.” she said.

When Julie’s aunt who in her early 70’s and fit as a fiddle decided to get a pet, Julie suggested that her aunt consider volunteering at the local animal shelter instead. Sean Baker agrees. “If Julie’s aunt is an active woman and in good health she could assist with the primary care of animals in the animal shelter. Seniors bring a lot as volunteers”, he said. “They are committed and really love the animals they care for. Even if the volunteer isn’t able to do the primary care, there is lots they can do to help both either at the shelter or outside of it as well.” he added.

Mary swore she wouldn’t get another cat but when she saw Hank, it was love at first sight and she brought him home that very day. Julie’s aunt appreciated her niece’s suggestion and may sign up to be a volunteer this coming spring. Jack changed his mind about getting another Yellow Lab. He learned that the retirement community he chose to move to did welcome little dogs so he brought Tina, a small 9 pound Affenpinscer along to share his new home.

f your night table has a collection of medicine bottles and your medicine cabinet is full of prescriptions and over the counter drugs, you should heed the warnings about polypharmacy.

Polypharmacy means “many drugs” and refers to problems that can occur when a patient is taking more medications than are actually needed. It is a particular concern for older adults, who account for almost 30% of all prescribed drugs. Research shows that approximately 27% of people report borrowing / sharing medication.

Most common medications borrowed: allergy medications (44%); pain medications (42%); antibiotics (32 %).

It’s not uncommon for most seniors to have more than one bottle of prescription drugs in their medicine cabinet. Many have blister packs full of various blood pressure medicines, pain reducers or other prescribed pills all organized into the proper daily dosage.

Ken McGregor, the Co-ordinator of the Pharmacy Department for Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver explains,” When a prescription medication is obtained in the appropriate way, the doctor makes a diagnosis and selects a medication with the specific patient characteristics in mind.”

“When the prescription is filled at a pharmacy, aside from providing the medication, a pharmacist will review the prescription against the patient’s profile to screen for potential problems .Borrowing medications from someone else bypasses these key steps.”

Borrowing medications may lead to unintended consequences such as: • Allergic reactions • Unanticipated side effects • Interactions with other medications • Inappropriate dose for the specific patient • Antibiotic resistance due to inappropriate use • Dependence on some pain medications • Delays in getting appropriate diagnosis and treatment • Multiple medications can contribute to cognitive impairment and falls in the elderly McGregor warns, “Medications are sometimes no longer indicated but may not have been stopped; it is good to regularly review the need for some medications with a pharmacist or physician. Having too many pre-

scriptions on hand may lead to decreased compliance because of “too many pills to take”, or confusion in taking all medications.”

“Some symptoms that lead to new medications may actually be due to side effects of an existing medication; if not recognized this can lead to adding more medication unnecessarily when other treatment options should be considered.”

Problems can also arise when the prescribed drugs are abused or mixed with over the counter medicines or ‘borrowing’ drugs from other people. Many over the counter medicines available today were once prescription only drugs and can potentially react with the prescribed medicines you are already taking.

Herbs can also create problems as they are not regulated products and you can never be sure of the quality or strength. Some herbs or natural products may interact with your prescriptions and counter the solution to your initial concern.

If you take prescription drugs and answer yes to any of the questions below you could be at

increased risk for polypharmacy.

• Do you take herbs, vitamins or over the counter products?

• Do you have to take medicine more than once a day?

• Do you use different pharmacies to fill your prescriptions?

• Do you have poor eyesight or hearing?

• Do you live alone?

• Do you sometimes forget to take your medication?

McGregor provides some general thoughts about starting a new medication. “Undergoing a Risk / Benefit review is a concept that should be applied when determining whether or not to begin any therapy, including medication. This involves reviewing the pros and cons of using a specific medication.

If reviewed with the physician or pharmacist, the patient can be involved in determining whether the perceived benefits outweigh the potential risks that may come from taking the medication.” ~ Ken McGregor, Cor-ordinator of Pharmacy Department, Lions Gate Hospital

in Langley have some great community/civic assets at their disposal. They share these assets with the rest of the population – parks, bandstands, recreation areas such as playing fields, trails, cycling routes, events, museums, community halls, libraries, schools, universities, civic halls and the topic of this discussion - the community centres.

A community centre has been defined as a public location where members of a community tend to gather for group activities that are cultural, social and recreational. The centre provides social support, public information, plays a major role in the concept of community development; and helps prevent social isolation. Most centres are oriented towards recreational and sport activities for the younger generations, but there is an increasing interest by the seniors of Langley to have them provide more programming and activities that are not as ‘physically demanding’ in an effort to help service the needs of seniors as they age.

This past June’s Seniors Week and its “TryIt!” opportunities saw over 85 free or low cost activities with 2,124 seniors registered and more participating in the open events held throughout the Langleys. So, you are invited to get involved with the Action Table and voice your opinion on this – let’s hear from you and let’s get that information to the Township and City. The community centres belong to you!

In a recent request, seniors provided information to the Action Table that included the desire to see more low impact activities for seniors – Chair Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba Gold, more dance type classes and music programs. Feedback was that the aquatics programs for seniors are very good. A desire for social activities such as cribbage, painting, and cards was also noted. We have youth dances, why not seniors’ dances? Most community centres have some type of kitchen facility, so why can’t we hold affordable cooking classes for seniors that both men and women would like to attend? Cooking is such a social activity and may lure a lot of seniors out of isolation. Throughout the generations, the kitchen table has always been the hub of interaction.

And what about organizing bus and field trips from the community centres to places that seniors would really like to go to? This has been offered in the past, but not always successfully.

Of course, with an increase in programming would come the issue of room availability, hours of operation, best times for seniors, and staffing, to name a few. The lack of a transportation infrastructure in Langley to help increase mobility for seniors also poses a challenge.

The Langley Seniors Community Action Table is funded by the United Way Lower Mainland whose priority area is to help Seniors Stay Strong, Independent and Engaged in the Community. One of the key focus areas is to build public awareness of local community needs and community assets that have the potential to meet the needs of older adults. eniors Healthy Living Bag is an affordable way for Langley seniors to purchase healthy vegetables and fruits.

There is ample evidence that older adults can live longer, healthier lives if they eat a healthy diet that includes vegetables and fruits.

Good Nutrition helps to reduce risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancers and diabetes, in older adults. Seniors require fewer calories but need more nutrients to promote and protect health. A recent survey found that 62 percent of seniors who reported consuming fruits and vegetables at least five times a day were in good health compared with 52 percent of seniors who consumed fewer

The City and Township of Langley has a high percentage of the Seniors Population and this number is projected to increase from 13% of the population to18% by 2025 and becoming one of the communities with the largest growth in the 65+ population. Langley also has a high percentage of Seniors living alone at 28% and Langley city is the municipality with the highest proportion of low-income seniors in the region at 31.1%.

Lastly, 2/3 of our seniors have at least 1 confirmed chronic disease such as diabetes, heart disease etc.

An 86 year old lady in a chair yoga class one time was experiencing shortness of breath while working some arm movements. She had a pace maker, and she realized that she couldn’t do any arm movements that involved raising her arms above her heart.

I read recently that – “The link between our immune system and exercise has now been confirmed by researchers. Even low intensity exercise such as walking every day, or just 3 times per week has a significant impact on our immune system.”

Most of you know that it’s easier to do things with a group than by yourself. When you participate with a group, or one other person, you become more accountable.

You can make friends along the way. So join that fitness class at your nearest seniors centre or parks and recreation centre. Try a water aerobics, Yoga, Tai Chi or dance class, table tennis or lawn bowling group.

Whatever you decide for your fitness routine, give it your best. To find out what resonates with you ask about doing a drop-in class to see if you like it. What you decide will depend on your own fitness level. It’s never too late to start exercising.

If you still have lots to give, get out there and give it.

Join a club, start a club, call a friend and get him/her involved in something. Be part of the action.

A lot of seniors like to do hobbies such as gardening, woodworking, quilting, knitting, etc. Why not take a break and do something to loosen up your muscles.

So take a few minutes for a little stretching, some slow deep breathing, a walk around your garden to admire your work, a walk around your complex if you live in a condo. And when you’re back in the kitchen use the counter to lean on while stretching your calves. Balance on one leg while stirring the pot or waiting for the kettle to boil. Be creative. Tune into your body to tune up your body.

Know your limitations and recognize problems.

Don’t get yourself into a situation that can cause pain or discomfort. Stop exercising if you feel dizzy, short of breath or are experiencing chest pains.

Though Their Memories Fade, We Must Not Forget

“Jumper Down”

is the ominous phrase heading many emails concerning those who were wartime paratroopers.

In its simplicity it means a jumper has died and is becoming almost a weekly occurrence. As so it is with the present wartime population who hobble towards their demise in fewer numbers every November 11th.

A few years ago most Legion members sported the medals awarded for service in WW2 or Korea. Now they are a rarity with service medals in more recent conflagrations more prominent. It is understandable as the war started 73 years ago.

Those of us fortunate enough to be alive remember these days with clarity. Take Noel Butcher, of Langley, for instance. He fought the bitterest of battle from the tip of Sicily, through the mud and cold of Italy to his being shifted to Belgium and Holland as the Germans reeled in final defeat.

Amongst his peers Noel will recount some of his experiences.

The sounds of battle, the sight of the dead buddies stinking in the mud as their innards oozed from their corpses. He will still hear the scream of shells, Moaning Minnie’s and chattering machine gun fire.

He will also recount the shortage of men with companies the mere size of platoons due to the fact that Canada refused to send the more than 100,000 draftees overseas due to the political situation.

Memories fade but were brought alive by such men as the late Tom Soames of Langley who vividly remembered the bitter cold of the North Atlantic as his tiny corvette ploughed the mountainous waves in defence of the plodding convoys taking supplies to Great Britain. Living conditions were dreadful, rations were worse and death always lurked beneath the icy seas.

There were the heroes of the air who heroically defended British skies against overwhelming odds, and won. Amongst this band of heroes is Langley’s Bill Marr who flew Mosquito Fighter-Bombers. His comrades in Bomber Command nightly taking the trip of probable death over Germany and the destruction of military targets and, unfortunately, countless hapless civilians upon the ground then called ‘lateral damage.’

As the bugle sounds “The Last Post” many of these veterans of yesteryears could remember their father’s and mother’s war, World War 1 where casualties were even higher during the fighting but not on the home front. This was a war of such brutality and horror as to be almost unimaginable. Mass assaults and death in the thousands to gain a few metres of ground.

Poisonous gas which blinded as it burned the skin from the body and turned healthy lungs to mush as soldiers tried to survive in muddy trenches with the smell and sight of corpses to

share the bully beef rations. I can still recall seeing blinded men submerged in oil in the Colonel Belcher Military Hospital in Calgary as late at the Korean conflict.

That conflict was no piece of cake either. It was tough as hell and fought under brutal conditions. A daughter of Don Urquhart, Sniper Sergeant of the Princess Patricia’s, Patty, who was a by-law officer for the City of Langley until her retirement, can relate some of the events.

The civilian populations of the warring nations suffered as well.

Canadians nor their American neighbours didn’t and had only minor inconveniences to mar their lives or the worry over a loved one ‘Somewhere in Europe’ as the letterhead put it.

The British and German civilian populations paid the dreadful price of total war as did Russia, Japan and most of Europe. The frightening sounds of air raid sirens in the blackouts. The drone of bombers in the sky to be followed by the whistling sounds of bombs before their shattering explosion. Then, furious fires, demolished buildings, flattened homes, impassable streets and death in horrifying numbers.

It is almost impossible for those living today to recall the utter horror of war. In Langley we worry about matters of little worldly import such as busy roads, where the next neighbourhood will be located and a possible increase in taxes. If you do get out seeing the few remaining old vets trudge toward the cenotaph on November 11th, remember that they come from a generation who suffered war, depression and situations which are almost unimaginable to us living today.

Realize that the lives most of us live today amidst luxury and plenty, owe it to these fast-fading generations of men and women who fought so we might prosper as free people in a free society. Hopefully their genes will be passed down and, if we find ourselves once again plunged into war, we will reflect the guts and gumption of those who have preceded us.

Always an early riser she couldn’t wait to tell me her news. “I’m getting married! “He proposed last night and we’re going to elope! But I want a bridesmaid, will you do it?” I wiped the sleep out of my eyes and said, who is this?

“It’s me, silly,

it’s Rosie” she giggled.

My girlfriend, who is usually the reserved type was positively giddy with joy.

In Langley especially, the words to the popular Frank Sinatra tune “Love and Marriage” are true. Langley’s seniors are getting married later in life and there are couples here who have been married for over 60 years and are still going strong! I’m not a senior but I have a lot of friends who are. I asked some of them to tell me what it’s like to be in love in the golden years. And these are some of the things they said.

Togetherness Times Being together and sharing memories of times gone by was something that everyone agreed was very important. But it wasn’t the only thing they talked about. Though the ‘good old days’ is a popular topic everyone agreed that they valued a partner who keeps up on current affairs and has stayed in tune with technology.

One couple said that their favourite time of the day is the morning. While sitting at their breakfast nook and sharing a cup of coffee they enjoy an online game of chest or checkers with their friends from around the world and across the street.

When chastised by an old buddy for ignoring him at Tim Horton’s a local gentleman said: “I was there on a date with a new lady in my life. When I spend time with a woman I only have eyes for her and I only have one thing on my mind... well maybe two! Does she like me? And I wonder if she notices that my hearing aid is turned way up so I can hear every word she says?

One local couple said that a daily stroll is their way of spending quality time together. “Sometimes along our walks, he’ll get that glint in his eye and I know that he wants to steal a kiss; and if there isn’t anyone close by, once in awhile I let him!” she said with a wink.

Quality Time Because of advanced age or infirmity the reality is that some couples must live apart. This can cause a disconnection in the relationship but most of the time it doesn’t happen. A Langley couple is so dedicated to each other that even though her health requires her to live in an assisted living situation he visits and spends time with her every day. “Often you see them sitting together in the lounge not saying a word to each other but you can see they are connecting at every level. They are very much in love.” commented a close friend.

Play time The people I spoke to emphasized the importance of play time. Going on a cruise or an expensive holiday is not something everyone can afford but that going out and having fun is important no matter what you do. They suggested that if you can’t go on an expensive vacation consider being a tourist right here at home. “There is lots to see and do right in our back yard.” commented Tim* a local senior. “You can tour a winery or stroll the streets of Fort Langley to have an ice cream cone or a cup of coffee.” said Della*, his wife of 55 years.

Intimate times The couples reported that intimacy was a factor in a good marriage but that it wasn’t the whole enchilada. Termed the forgotten years, young people don’t like think of their parents or heaven forbid their grandparents being close. The truth of the matter is, intimacy in the bedroom may change somewhat but each couple did agree that being intimate is the icing on the cake. Whether they were young in their golden years or a bit older it was evident that intimacy is important to them to maintain their relationship.

A local gentleman in his mid 60’s, commented “I’ve only been married for a few years. I couldn’t imagine not being intimate with my wife.”

Make no mistake. The need for intimacy is ageless. Studies confirm that no matter what your gender, you can enjoy sex for as long as you wish. Naturally, sex at 70 or 80 may not be like it was at 20 or 30—but in some ways it can be better. According to Health Canada, whatever your age sexual activity is a natural and important part of a healthy lifestyle.

The Best of Times My girlfriend and her new man didn’t end up eloping, they had a beautiful wedding that included 28 of their closest friends. It was a held at a stunning location and she and the groom beamed throughout the day. We’ve always been very candid with each other and in a quiet moment, I asked her, “At your age, she’s 80, why did you decide to tie the knot instead of just living together? She smiled sweetly and said, “when he asked me to move in with him, I insisted we marry and he make an honest woman of me. This is one heifer who doesn’t give her milk away for free”, she declared with a grin.

He said, “Somewhere I’ve never been before!” I told him, “How about the kitchen?”

rAISING T H E STAKES It is hard not to be attracted to some form of gambling these days. Everyday the extensive advertising campaigns attempt to separate people from their money with the promise of great rewards.

F

rom hospital lotteries to the scratch tickets at every corner store and gas station, to sports betting and the dream of big payoffs with weekly Lotto Max and twice weekly 649 draws - it is all hard to ignore.

Some seniors will remember when gambling was deemed illegal, except for horse racing. People had to go underground to purchase an Irish sweepstakes ticket and if they ever won, had to devise an elaborate scheme in order to collect the winnings. It used to be that mutual funds and fraudulent investment schemes were seen as high risk forms of gambling.

Now governments are dependent on gaming funds to help balance their budgets, and lottery draws like the PNE prize home at done “live” on television during the News Hour to help create even more excitement and generate more revenue for the various parties that benefit.

It seems more and more everyone wins - except the average gambler.

In fact the radio and television commercials now say - play for the fun, not to make money.

So why would anyone gamble at a fancy casino or their local bingo hall, when you can just sit and have a coffee at your favorite mall and play Keno all day? Or because it is so easy - just play on your home computer. You never have to go out anymore.

The main reason is that gambling remains a social activity and a night out for many people. However, when it comes to gambling, how do you balance entertainment value and social responsibility?

That is why governments and gaming facilities have come up with an extensive program on Responsible and Problem Gambling, run by the British Columbia Lottery Commission and its various affiliates such as casinos, racetracks and the province’s own online gaming business PlayNow.com.

The program is targeted to poker and blackjack games, which have become very popular television shows, sports betting, and the old traditions of betting on horse racing and the infamous one-arm bandits - although slot machines are so highly computerized now, each slot machine spin is determined by a random number generator.

In 2010, BCLC was acknowledged by the World Lottery Association as a leader in responsible gambling practices. And next year the BCLC will host a global conference at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

New Horizons in Responsible Gambling will feature internationally renowned experts in responsible gambling, including keynote speaker John Luff, founder of Sustainable Marketing, from London, England.

According to the latest BCLC annual report, gambling is big business in this province. BCLC generated net income of $1,107.4 million for 2011/12. Of that $5.6 million bolstered B.C.’S responsible gaming initiatives, research, prevention and Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch’s Problem Gambling Program.

And $135 million in gaming grants were distributed to more than 5,000 charitable and community organizations.

Funds were also allocated to the federal government and local governments, as well as other programs, with the largest portion, $696.3 million, allotted to province’s own consolidated revenue fund.

With the Game Sense program firmly established, there is a greater emphasis placed on the most vulnerable seniors population.

According to information on the website, many older adults participate in gambling for social and entertainment benefits, and to replace time that used to be spent at work. Casino and gaming centre environments have events and promotions geared specifically to older adults, including tours and free food and beverages. Spending time gambling alone or with friends can be an exciting way to spend a morning or afternoon but it isn’t always fun for everyone. Research suggests that older adults are the least likely to access help or know about the program’s free counselling services if they need support to deal with gambling issues.

Currently the BC Responsible and Problem Gaming Program offers three programs to older adults (ages 55 years plus).

They are two workshops and a drama production.

“Keepin’ It Fun” is a presentation designed to help older adults learn more about ways to gamble responsibly, signs of a problem with gambling, and where to get help if a problem exists. Content and duration can be tailored to the availability and needs of the group.

“Gambling and the Older Adult” is a workshop which focuses on some of the unique impacts experienced by older adults who develop a problem with gambling. Content and duration can be tailored to the needs of the group.

The Seasoned Players is a dramatic awareness initiative for older adults.

A group of older volunteers are trained, write and act in two short plays - one focused on responsible gambling and ways to keep gambling safe, the other on problem gambling and where to get help if a problem is suspected. The plays are performed in malls, senior and recreation centres.

BCLC introduced GameSense to help clarify the message of responsible play and encourage gamblers to understand the risks. Programs and information brochures are available in many different languages. Check www.GameSense.ca.

I held the truck door as I closed it, and pushed it shut with a soft click. The silence was truly McGregor amazing and the slamming of a door would have been a rude Says intrusion. There were only nine jim mcgregor or ten sites in the small campground, and yet here at three in the afternoon on a late September Thursday, I was the only one there.

The three day seminar had been a disappointment so I had skipped out early and was attempting, once again, to make the Okanagan / Fraser Valley run in four hours. I had been doing well until Manning Park when I caught up to two Air Streams and a low bed. Impatiently, I took my place in line and said goodbye to the record attempt!

Now it was time for a pit stop and a stretch, let them get ahead and out of the way. I had passed this small campground dozens of times going and coming, but had never turned in. To-day, it was in the right place at the right time.

I stretched and rubbed the knot above the left shoulder blade and took a look around. Beautiful tall trees were letting a few horizontal afternoon slivers of sunlight sneak through in scatters around the site.

Other than the distant sporadic traffic noise, the only other sound was a creek up ahead. A well traveled path looked promising and I followed it to edge of the campsite in front of me.

The river’s voice increased as I approached the edge. As I looked down about Twenty feet, I saw the water sparkling and gurgling, over and around the rocks. Once again I felt like an intruder about to interrupt a casual conversation these old friends were having.

I made my way down the gravel bank. Some strategically placed smooth, flat stones provided a bridge to a large boulder in the middle of the river. I crossed to it knowing that right about now I would be yelling at my kids to be careful and stay off it!

Once on top, the view was most easily described as an autumn calendar page. At the coast, summer was hanging on like the last girl at the dance. Teasing, flirting, and promising to stay awhile.

Here, higher and farther inland, the season changers had been hard at work for a couple of weeks. Painting, shading, redecorating for fall, and laying down a thick new carpet of needles and leaves.

It was cool. Not chilly, not cold but refreshing after the stuffy air conditioning in the truck.

I had no camera and, worst of all, no fishing rod! The river ran helter-skelter up stream but as it approached the rock it became more serious and brought its arms together just in time to tumble over a small fall into a large pool. I found myself thinking that I was only an hour from home and I could probably back up early Sunday morning with the rod and the camera. Subconsciously, I knew that once I got back home, I would “be too busy!”

But if I did come back: I would use worms or just a single egg, with a float and no weight. I would cast up stream into the current and let the stream carry the hook over the falls into the pool. The eddies would scoot it over to the dark emerald water under the log. The float would dive and the line would tighten!

About the middle of the pool it would spiral out of the water and I would play it to me. As I removed the barbless hook I would marvel at its prism painted silver sides then cradle it back into the water, and with a flick and flash it would be gone. No such thing as a bad day fishing.

I think I felt the eyes before I actually saw them. A lone wolf stood on a log about 100 feet away on the other side of the river, watching me, probably smiling at my fishing story. He was mature and healthy and ready for winter. I wasn’t even aware that there may be wolves in the area but there he was.

I strained into the surrounding bush to see if there were others, like the paintings in the malls. But somehow, I knew he was alone like me, the two of us just taking some time away from the pack.

I backed down off the rock and watched him turn gracefully on the log, still watching me. Then, like the fish, he was gone with a flick of his tail. We had obviously come to some type of unspoken and unwritten agreement that we would go our own way.

Not the first wolf I had ever negotiated with!

I know this will be one of those snippets of memories that never leave, but regretfully I head back up the path. A couple of Jays land on a picnic table and cock their heads expectantly as I approach. A quick search of the truck turns up a potato chip bag with some crumbs. I shake it out on the table and they are gone in an instant. I feel better giving something back Pulling back out on the highway, I leave the music off. My God the trees and cliffs are absolutely gorgeous! Reds, yellows, greens, and some shade of purple vine running up and down the washes. I realize I have missed at least three hours of ‘calendar driving’ on my record attempt and I feel the guilt again.

Maybe I will get up early Sunday morning. It won’t take that long to get back up here.
