T

rekking to the Mount Everest base camp is giving a retired Port Alberni teacher a chance to go back to his outdoor roots, get in touch with his spirituality and see a new part of the world.

Former VAST principal Tom McEvay, 57, and local physician Robert O’Dwyer, 58, are leaving for Mount Everest on Nov. 2 and will be joined by McEvay’s son Cody, who is forgoing a semester of university studies to participate in the expedition.

Others can’t comprehend what McEvay is doing, but he knows exactly what he’s doing, he said.

“People think I’m crazy when they ask me why am I doing this – well I say ‘Why not?’,” McEvay said.

“I’m crazy but I’m not stupid.

This is a controlled, organized climb with an experienced reputable firm.”

McEvay and O’Dwyer have been friends for several years and are nearly the same age.

“I tell people that Rob is there to re-start my heart and my son is there to pack me out,” McEvay kidded.

McEvay is taking the trip with longtime friend Ioin White, who has led more than 20 Everest expeditions through his company Sherpa Encounters. McEvay met White through wrestling, where White coached teams in Burnaby over the years.

The trip represents coming full circle in McEvay’s life.

He grew up in Victoria where he quickly took to the outdoors, hiking, camping and fishing. In university, the outdoors was in McEvay’s

DNA, and he continued to hike in the mountains around Vancouver’s North Shore, Whistler and Blackcomb.

He worked outdoors and taught the outdoors program at AW Neill when he was hired fresh out of UBC in 1979. “I was meant to be on Everest at this time in my life,” he said.

McEvay retired from the district as the principal of VAST in June and has been busy working with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs as an education advisor, and as a private consultant to several agencies.

“People know me from my

role as a teacher and principal.

But they don’t know about this part of my life — the outdoors,” he said.

The trek has intrinsic meaning that goes beyond a trip to an exotic destination. In the heights of Everest McEvay has a chance to experience an existential lucidity and refocus his gaze inward.

“There’s a mystique there.

It’s a very spiritual place that few people get to see and experience,” McEvay said. “I want to un-clutter my mind of the modern world and reflect about myself and who I really am.”

O’Dwyer is originally from Dublin, Ireland and has worked in the Alberni Valley as an internal medicine specialist for the last 15 years.

He’s travelled to Thailand, Malaysia and other points in Asia and almost made it to Nepal once. “I wanted to go there 10 years ago to provide medical services but there was an insurrection and I never went,” he said. “I like to say Tom is dragging me there. But going gives me a chance to see and experience a culture that is centuries old.”

The group will acclimatize in Kathmandu, Nepal, which is 1,829 metres (6,000 feet) above sea level.

From there they’ll travel to Lukla where they will set off to Everest with Sherpas, porters and yaks.

Once at Everest, they’ll summit 213 m (700 feet) above base camp at Kala Patthar, where most of the famous photographs of the mountain are taken from, McEvay said.

The base camp sits at 5,300 m (17,500) feet above sea level and the climb is expected to be taxing.

By-elections will be held to fill the civic seats held by the late Glenn Wong.

The AlberniClayoquot Regional District chair and School District 70 trustee died suddenly in Victoria on Sept. 28.

Wong served as director of the ACRD’s Cherry Creek Electoral District since 2002. And he was a school board trustee since 1999. He also the chaired the ARCD. At the ACRD, provincial regulations require that a by-election be held to fill Wong’s vacant seat, chief administrative officer Russell Dyson said.

The ACRD has coordinated the school board election because its boundaries are the same as SD 70’s. But there are challenges to this arrangement.

The ACRD and SD 70 have different timelines that they are legislatively required to hold an election within.

The school act has to appoint an officer within 30 days.

The election act states that the election be held as soon as reasonably possible.

The school district has asked the Ministry of Education if an exception can be made in this instance so that the elections be held simultaneously, SD 70 Secretary Treasurer Jerry Linning said.

he concept of a ring road in and out of the Alberni Valley is taking form.

Directors of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District voted to spend $10,000 on a study that will examine the feasibility of a ring road through the Valley.

The money is being underwritten by an ACRD feasibility study fund and the work will be undertaken by the civil engineering consulting firm R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd, ACRD chief administrative officer Russell Dyson said.

The road would be ensconced in part of the Cherry Creek Electoral District.

The study is expected to commence shortly.

Specifically, the study will examine options for a truck route into Port Alberni. The committee proposed

a ring road route starting at either the top or bottom of the hump, through Island Timberland’s property and linking up with Ship Creek Road.

Once completed the study will be shared with the ACRD, port authority and transportation committee.

The study represents the first time the ACRD has examined a ring road concept, Dyson said.

“We’ve participated in the Horne Lake study but I think this may be the first time we’ve looked at a ring road route,” he said.

The ring road study is different from the connector study that the PAPA also undertook, PAPA director Darren DeLuca said.

Ship Creek Road, and the connector would be from Highway 4 to Highway 19,” he said.

The port authority released its final reports on a connector last Friday.

The report outlines two options, both of which start at the Horne Lake intersection of Highway 19 and connect with Highway 4 near the Coombs Country Candy Store.

The first option would travel along the north side of Horne Lake, traverse over the hump at Lacey Lake and connect with Highway 4.

The total cost of the project would be almost $50 million.

The second option would travel along the existing Horne Lake Road, turn south up the side of the hill to Mount Horne, then connect with the Lacey Lake route to Coombs Country Candy.

The total cost of the second option is $63 million.

“Horne Lake north runs through Crown land, a right of way, there are geotechnical challenges not to mention cabin owners, so I don’t think this would be an option,” DeLuca said.

The second route doesn’t disturb cabin owners, already utilizes a road to the hump and is more cost effective, DeLuca said.

The next step is identifying the appropriate route and taking the proposal back to the Ministry of Transportation, DeLuca said.

Suicide shows support needed Fantasies won’t keep ferries afloat If only half of the outpouring of love and support directed towards Amanda Todd had come a week earlier, there’s a good chance the B.C. teen would still be alive today.

The 15-year-old Port Coquitlam girl committed suicide last week, a month after posting a haunting video to YouTube detailing her years of abuse from harassment and bullying both at school and online.

The story of her tragic suicide has captured the attention of media and the public around the world.

Police have about two dozen investigators sifting through leads to find any evidence that could result in charges against individuals, while hundreds of tips are pouring into an e-mail account set up by RCMP. While we hope police are successful in identifying those responsible for tormenting Todd, that will do nothing to prevent a repeat of this heartbreaking story.

Coroner Barb McLintock said in order for her to make recommendations to prevent similar tragedies, issues ranging from school and mental health support, to cyber and social media bullying must be explored.

We must all do all we can to prevent any more young lives being needlessly cut short.

Parents, please talk to your kids. Let them know they are loved and they always have somewhere to turn; and just as importantly, help them to understand pain that can be caused through words, and what we all stand to gain from their offering comfort and support to a classmate in need.

ICTORIA – It was a sunny Thanksgiving weekend when I took my first all-transit trip from Victoria to Vancouver for a B.C. Lions football game.

Despite all the doomsaying about people shunning ferries because of some mediadetermined “tipping point” in fares, you wouldn’t have guessed it that weekend. Articulated buses were jammed coming and going from the Tsawwassen terminal to the Canada Line.

Returning to Vancouver Island on Sunday, I was struck by the crowds, and the low cost: SkyTrain, express bus, walk-on passenger fare and express bus to Victoria totalled about $20. This explains the surge in walk-on traffic.

BC Ferries issued bulletins advising first that Tsawwassen’s

parking lot and then Swartz Bay’s were full.

The Tsawwassen First Nation’s shuttle parking next door was overflowing, with cars tucked into every level space. And even with hourly sailings, the major route had plenty of vehicle traffic, with all available vessels running.

Now the long, late summer is gone, and the political theatre resumes.

Transportation Minister Mary Polak picked up where the retiring Blair Lekstrom left off, reminding people that BC Ferries is going to deal with rising costs primarily by ceasing the practice of running vessels a third full or less.

This comes as “consultation” begins with smaller ferry communities on where and when these sailings will be cut. And it follows the first major price-cap decision by the newly

empowered B.C. Ferry Commissioner, Gord Macatee. He now can determine service levels as well as fares, which are permitted to rise about four per cent in each of the next three years.

The NDP’s ferry critic, North Coast MLA Garry Coons, has also decided to transition to his government pensions next year.

But before he sails away, he has doubled his repertoire of outraged sound bites to two.

Along with every coffeeshop knowit-all on the coast, Coons perpetually reminds us that ferries are “part of our highway system.” He remains convinced that this financially illiterate cliché somehow deals with the fact that even a subsidy approaching $200 million this year can’t keep all those boats afloat.

similar price increases, when you factor in tolls, insurance, food and other costs beyond the fuel tank.

But for some reason the “government” is supposed to provide special relief to those who choose the most inaccessible places to live.

Coons’ latest tack is that BC Ferries has lost its way, trying to be a fancy cruise ship service instead of giving people basic transportation at an affordable price.

That would be terrible if it were true. But those amenities on newer vessels are there because they make money, utilizing staff who have to be on board anyway. As everyone but the NDP seems to grasp, the big costs are fuel, maintenance, and minimum crew levels to meet federal regulations, regardless of passenger revenue.

I was reminded on the last busy weekend of the year that the new Coastalclass ferries kept vehicle capacity the same while increasing passenger space.

To the Editor, Must be nice for the Dalton McGuintys, Stephen Harpers, Christy Clarks and all other representatives of the people, hired (elected) to take taxpayers’ hardearned tax-dollars and conduct the business of the people, to suspend their duties by proroguing the legislative assembly.

Essentially they’ve said to their employer—the people—“we’re not going to show up for work now because we’ve got other business to attend to.”

Other business, like what? Avoiding the splatter of a political scandal?

Retiring in a timely fashion with a better pension than would be garnered otherwise?

Using taxpayerfunded time to gather political party troops to rebrand the party, go over the playbook, and generally prepare for the next election campaign?

There ought to be a national law prohibiting this kind of legislative hooky.

think of any other employee in the real, work-a-day world that would get away with these kinds of shenanigans for long without receiving a pink slip.

To the Editor, Re: New road not feasible idea, Letters, Oct. 11.

I know how often one likes to read the letters from Mr. Berg.

But after reading his letter of Oct. 11, I can’t keep my opinion to myself.

From his past letters I get a sense that he has spent his entire life within the union movement.

I myself belong to the steelworkers in Ontario. And let me say to Mr. Berg that the union cost me my job in the end.

He stated that this city is not fit for a container port. I come from an employment environment that rewards those who are willing to take chances. Let me say this to everyone that was born here or has lived here the past 50 years: things are going to change.

For the past year now I have been

sending letters to the people who have the deep pockets for the kind of changes needed for the Valley.

You might say this will not lead to any investment in the Valley; I say you are so wrong.

It’ll be the private investor that will change the hows and whats for this Valley, this Island and province.

It’s always easier to be negative; it’s harder to try and be positive than change the mind set of people living in the 1950s.

The new high school was a waste of our money, removing the old high school is a waste of money.

I think it would be better to build apartments for those who have no chance of owning a home.

That will create jobs.

I do see a container port for this Valley, plus many other businesses that no

one is even thinking of. Look at the computer industry: it can operate at the North Pole. Why not try and build a robotic industry? How about a steel plant to provide fabricated steel to Alberta and elsewhere? How about a shipyard in the Valley?

I am quite sure that the shipping industry will be in need of new shipping to carry the oil for China.

When life does bad things to good people we are often tempted to doubt what we believe. We sometimes can be heard questioning “Why me Lord - Why them Lord - Why did you let this happen”. It is often hard for us to remember that our God is not like that - it is life that brings on difficult things. We can be knocked right off our feet wondering if we will ever be able to get up. Our faith can hit you right in the face sometimes and a voice insides says “ get up - put one foot in front of the other - Corinthians 10:13 tells us that “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

So hang in there - meet life head on - for when you can’t bear the load the strength of Christ kicks in…and He becomes everything you need and more.

male suspect got more than he bargained for when he tried to rob the River Bend Store in Port Alberni.

The suspect walked into the River Road

store on Friday, Oct. 12 at approximately 1 p.m. Once inside, the suspect wandered around the store before covering his face with a scarf and walking to the till with a weapon, Port Alberni RCMP Const.

Shelly Schedewitz said in a news release.

The store owner pepper-sprayed the suspect, who immediately fled from the premises. Police surrounded the area but a search came up empty-handed.

The suspect is described as a sixfoot tall thinly built Caucasian male with

short blonde hair, 20-25 years of age and softspoken.

The incident was the second theft attempt at a local business that same day.

At 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 12, the owner of the Beaver Creek Market was awakened from his sleep in the store’s

Two transit staff members will be riding city buses from Oct. 24-26 during the day. Their task is to engage riders and record riders’ answers to a survey.

The exercise is being done in response to new transit routes and stops that were implemented in Port Alberni last summer which saw new bus routes, greater trip frequency and a central exchange.

However, the changes weren’t met with open arms by residents, some of whom have since written to city council complaining about bus stops that have been removed and longer trips.

SPORTS U17 legacy gift closes books The Under 17 World Hockey Challenge continues to have an impact in the Alberni Valley three years after it ended.

The U17 society donated $680 to the Port Alberni Parks and Recreation Learn to Play Hockey program for kids.

The 2009 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge was hosted

by the Alberni Valley in partnership with other Island communities.

Recently the Society donated $10,000 to the Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society’s to purchase the Alberni Valley Bulldogs as a community owned team The small amount left made up the most recent donation.

Coach’s Comment Powell River Kings @ Alberni Valley Bulldogs October 18, 2012 @ 7:00pm This is the second meeting between the Kings and the Bulldogs this season. Bulldogs fans were treated to an exciting first game between these two teams that saw the ‘Dogs win an exciting one 4-3 in OT on a Manny Gialedakis goal. Bulldogs had a 2-0 lead after the first period only to see the Kings tie it up.

Both teams exchanged goals to set up the exciting OT finish.

Going into this weekend, the Bulldogs sport a record of 7-5-02 for 16 points compared to the Kings’ 4-8-0-2 record for 10 points. Both teams are winless in their last 2 games and will be working hard to start a new winning streak. Friday, Oct 19th is a professional day so we hope to see (and hear) a lot of energetic students at the game!

Bulldogs retiring Timberlake’s jersey SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

T

he Alberni Valley Bulldogs will honour one of its most popular players by retiring his jersey this Saturday.

Just before the Bulldogs take the opening face-off against the Chilliwack Chiefs, Devin Timberlake’s No. 18 will be raised to the rafters.

His jersey will join that of Colin Guiguet, who was one of the Bulldogs’ first captains. Guiguet’s hockey career was cut short when he suffered a serious knee injury.

Timberlake, an Alberni Valley minor hockey product, played for the Bulldogs for four seasons, from 2002–06.

He was the team captain for the final two years.

“He was an exceptional leader,” said Tom McEvay, the team’s educational co-ordinator and now a friend of Timberlake’s.

“He was the heart and soul of the team.

McEvay stays connected with many of the Bulldogs’ alumni. He watched Timberlake grow up playing hockey in Port Alberni and predicted to a Brown University scout one day that “there’s no doubt in my mind if Devin comes to Brown he will be your captain before he’s finished.”

Timberlake spent two years as team captain at Brown, and was succeeded by another Bulldog alum, Harry Zolnierczyk.

Timberlake went on to play within the NHL Boston Bruins’ minor league organization in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and with another team in Louisiana.

Timberlake played all his 236 BCHL games in a Bulldogs uniform over 4 full seasons, which puts him 2nd all-time in games played for the franchise. “Timby” contributed with 63 goals (5th alltime), 79 assists (4th all-time), for 142 points (4th all-time) and served as the Bulldogs’ captain for two seasons (2004/05 and 2005/06). Timby moved on from the Bulldogs to a successful NCAA Division 1 career with Brown University where he again served as captain for two seasons. After brief stints in the AHL and ECHL, Timberlake decided to put his education to use and is now on a successful path in the financial industry in Vancouver. Coaching changes loom as hoops season nears WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

Coaching changes are coming to the basketball program at Alberni District Secondary School, athletic director Mike Roberts said.

The senior boys’ team will be coached by the tandem of Neelam Parmar and Ryan Broekhuizen while Al Seredick is set to take the reins of the junior boys team.

While the boys’ teams are set there are major changes pending with the girls’ program.

Junior girls’ coach Nick Seredick and senior girls’ coach Greg Freethy are both taking some time away from the game to spend more time with their young families.

“The season requires a lot of time

and commitment with practices, games, tourneys and other stuff,” Roberts said.

“They feel they’re best needed where they are and we respect that.”

Seredick took the junior girls to the North Islands last March and missed advancing to the Islands.

Longtime former coach Brian Laviolette is dusting off the dry erase board to come back and coach the junior girls for one last hurrah before retiring next year. Laviolette has coached ADSS junior and senior basketball teams for more than 30 years.

Coaching the senior girls’ team is more complex, he said.

Freethy guided the senior girls’ squad to fifth place at the AAA Island Basketball Championships in

Victoria last March.

Freethy won’t be involved in the dayto-day coaching and management of the team, but he isn’t completely stepping away. He’s available to assist with practices.

And he’s mapping out a tournament schedule for this year.

The department has kicked around the idea of coaching the team by committee, and of reaching out to the coaching community in Valley to find a replacement.

But nothing has been finalized yet, Roberts said. “We’ve still got some time to find a solution,” he said.

Foul shots... The first week of boys tryouts are slated to go from Oct. 22-24, Roberts said. Girls tryouts are set to go afterwards.

The THE Arts ARTS Birth film fest continues

The West Coast Doula Collective, a group of birth and post-partum doulas working with birthing families in the Alberni Valley and beyond, is sponsoring the Trust Birth Film Festival at Char’s Landing in Southport.

This week’s film is Babies, and screens at 7 p.m.

The final film in the series will be Orgasmic Birth on Thursday, Oct. 25.

With these films, WCDC hopes to offer the community a look at how other countries and cultures experience birth and parenting.

Making sense of security deposits for renters HOUSING: | When do you pay, and how much?

In residential tenancies, a landlord can require a tenant to pay a security deposit (also called a damage deposit) or a pet damage deposit, or both.

In manufactured home park tenancies, a landlord cannot require a tenant to pay a security deposit or pet damage deposit.

A landlord may retain deposits paid before Dec. 31, 2003 until the end of the

tenancy and can use the deposit to cover damages as agreed by the tenant or ordered by a dispute resolution officer.

Security deposit A security deposit is held in trust by the landlord to cover any damage caused by a tenant beyond normal wear and tear during the tenancy.

A landlord can charge only one security deposit per rental unit, no matter how many people will live there.

The security deposit cannot be more than half of the first month’s rent. The landlord cannot ask for more deposit

Trekkers will go vegetarian From / 3 The spectre of altitude sickness and dysentery on the trip is a concern but a healthy dose of caution accompanies McEvay’s tensile steel spine.

He’s been training 90 minutes to sixhours per day for the last two months.

He hikes Alberni Valley’s mountains and trails and has been exercising in preparation for the rigors of the climb.

“I mean, I live and train at sea level

and I’m going to the opposite extreme over 11 days,” he said. “I’m comfortable that I can handle it.”

And McEvay has advised that they’ll be avoiding meat and eating a largely vegetarian diet in Nepal before departing for base camp. “You don’t want dysentery, but you really don’t want it when you’re sitting at 18,000 feet,” McEvay said.

The group will hike back down over four days and split up:

McEvay and O’Dwyer to a resort for three days, and Cody to trek further into India for another month.

McEvay’s life is as busy as it was before he retired, but it’s busy in ways different from when he worked.

At age 57 he can’t put off doing this until later. This is later.

“There was a sign at my retirement party that said ‘Tom’s not retiring.

He’s rewiring,’ and that about says it,” McEvay said.

Hatchery open this weekend The Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery is holding its annual open house this Sunday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission is free.

The fish are swimming upriver right now. “We’ve taken five million

chinook eggs already and our target is 7.2 million,” operations manager Harley Gaetz said.

People visiting the hatchery will be able to watch employees harvest and fertilize the fish eggs and put them to bed in

incubators.

There will be refreshments available.

The hatchery is located seven kilometres down Great Central Lake Road. Watch for the banners at the righthand turnoff.
