Fuel efficiency is a weighty issue (NC)—The heavier your vehicle is the more energy it needs to move so it makes sense to pay attention to the size and weight of the vehicle you intend to drive.

Consider these facts from the office of energy efficiency for vehicles at Natural Resources Canada: • Heavier vehicles have greater inertia and greater rolling resistance, which both contribute to increased fuel consumption.

• Reducing weight means reducing fuel consumption.

Increasingly stringent government fuel consumption legislation and evolving consumer preferences are making a difference. It is increasingly common to see automakers advertising their weight reduction initiatives.

Automakers are achieving weight reductions by substituting lighter materials, such as aluminum and advanced

composites, as well as vehicle design changes. These improvements enable additional weight reductions, since other vehicle components may then be downsized, ultimately leading to engine downsizing

with no sacrifice in performance – the less weight you have, the less weight you need.

• Reducing weight means reducing fuel cost.A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that for every 100 kg

weight reduction, the adjusted, combined city/highway fuel consumption could decrease by about 0.4 L/100 km for cars, and about 0.5 L/100 km for light trucks. Today’s cars and light trucks range in weight from

about 1,000 to 3,800 kg.

• Only buy what you need. When possible, choose a smaller vehicle with a smaller, more fuel-efficient engine. The NRCan Fuel Consumption Guide is a great resource to help you

compare fuel consumption between different vehicles and vehicle types.

• Don’t carry unneeded items in your trunk as the extra weight will increase your fuel consumption.

Reducing weight is

one of the ways you can save on fuel and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. There are more tips on fuel efficiency on the Natural Resources Canada website at www.oee. nrcan.gc.ca. www.newscanada.com

How cold weather affects fuel efficiency (NC)—Part of being a smart, safe, fuel-efficient driver includes knowing how to achieve good results even in the worst weather. Did you know, for example, that the combined effects of various conditions can increase fuel consumption more in winter than summer? While it may sound obscure, when you break it down it really makes sense.

• Drivers should expect higher fuel con-

sumption in cold weather. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that a drop in temperature from 24°C to 7°C increased fuel consumption in urban commutes by 12 to 28 per cent.

• Aerodynamic resistance is greater in winter.Cold, dry winter air is about 12 per cent denser than warm, humid summer air, increasing highway fuel consumption

by about 1.3 per cent in winter. The average wind speed is also higher in winter, which contributes to increased aerodynamic resistance and fuel consumption.

• Winter roads create difficult driving conditions. Roads tend to be rougher in the winter, with increased asphalt deterioration and a mix of snow, ice, slush, water, salt, gravel, and sand. The engine works harder to offset the increased

rolling resistance, as the tires must push aside heavy snow and road cover. The snow and ice also increase wheel slippage, which results in higher fuel consumption.

U.S. EPA data show that fuel consumption can increase from seven to 35 per cent as a result of poor road conditions, depending on the surface type and snow load.

• Winter gas normally has lower energy density. Gasoline com-

position is seasonally and geographically adjusted based on historical temperature data. A litre of winter gas has less energy than a litre of summer gas, typically in the range of 1.5-3 per cent.

Diesel fuel is similarly affected.

• Winter driving taxes the vehicle’s electrical system.

Except for using air conditioning on hot summer days, a vehicle’s electrical loads are normally higher in

cold weather due to greater demand from heating, defrosting, heated seats, heated mirrors, and increased use of the windshield wipers and washer pump. The energy for these electrical loads is provided by the vehicle’s electrical system, which obtains power from the engine.

BMO: Alberta’s oil riches driving Canada’s economic growth this year

CALGARY — Canada’s economic growth is being driven by resource-rich Western provinces, according to a Bank of Montreal report released Tuesday.

Alberta leads the pack, with the bank predicting 3.5 per cent real GDP growth this year, falling back a bit to 2.9 per cent in 2013. ``The energy sector remains the key driver of economic activity in the province, with crude bitumen production up 16 per cent year-over-year through the first half of the year, and the Energy

Resources Conservation Board expecting oilsands output to more than double by 2021,’’ said economist Robert Kavcic.

The energy sector ’s strength has attracted workers from elsewhere in Canada to Alberta, which has the country’s lowest unemployment rate at 4.4 per cent.

But BMO Kavcic says the industry faces some risk. ``Cost pressures could again pick up, though oilsands operations are generally viewed as economical at prices above US$80 (per barrel),’’ he said. ``Also, wrangling over new pipeline capacity con-

tinues.’’

Production from the Bakken, a massive oil deposit that stretches through parts of Montana, North Dakota and Saskatchewan, is filling up existing pipelines and causing Canadian producers to get a lower price for the heavy crude they produce. ``Estimates suggest that production in Western Canada could be negatively impacted by 2015/16 if there is not enough new pipeline capacity put in place.’’

BMO says Canada’s overall real GDP growth is expected to be 2.2 per cent

in 2012, with the Western provinces all topping that rate.

Saskatchewan, where oil and gas extraction and potash and uranium mining are big economic drivers, is expected to see growth of 3.1 per cent this year.

For British Columbia, it sees real GDP growth of 2.5 per cent and for Manitoba, growth of 2.6 per cent.

Further east it’s a different story. BMO sees Ontario posting growth of two per cent and the economies of Quebec and the Atlantic provinces growing at less than two per cent in 2012.

The report says fiscal

restraint, the high loonie and sluggish U.S. demand are putting a damper on growth in Central Canada.

Kavcic noted some cause for optimism in Ontario’s auto sector. ``Auto producers continue to invest in North America and, despite a strong currency and higher labour costs compared to the southern U.S. and Mexico, Ontario is no exception,’’ he said. ``Toyota, for example, is expanding production at its Woodstock assembly plant — a project worth about $100 million and 400 jobs. Plus, the CAW and Big Three automakers

recently reached new fouryear contract agreements.

Output in the auto sector was up a solid 20 per cent year-over-year through August.’’

Also Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund trimmed its global growth forecasts in its quarterly economic outlook.

The IMF predicts the global economy will expand 3.3 per cent this year, down from the estimate of 3.5 per cent growth it issued in July. Its forecast for growth in 2013 is 3.6 per cent, down from 3.9 per cent three months ago and 4.1 per cent in April.

Winter tires save lives and money

(NC)—Feel that cold air? It won’t be long now until we’re all dealing with sub-zero temperatures and wind chill that takes your breath away. While we can all agree that the prospect of winter can be pretty miserable, being prepared and taking the necessary precautions in advance of the ice and snow is ideal. And one of the best ways of doing this is by switching to winter tires.

But according to recent Canadian Tire survey, a majority of drivers in Ontario, the Prairies and British Columbia choose not to install winter tires, mistakenly believing that all-season tires offer adequate safety.

The evidence says otherwise. In wintercondition tests, Transport Canada and the Rubber Association of Canada found that stopping was 30 to 40 per cent longer with allseason compared to winter tires. In cornering, vehicles with allseason tires went off the testing track at speeds of only 40 to 50 km/h, while the vehicles equipped with winter tires had no problem.

The experts from Desjardins General Insurance (DGI) agree that winter tires are designed to save lives.

“What’s interesting is that many people who live in snow-belt regions across the country recognize the need for them,” said DGI spokesperson Joe Daly. “But some drivers in urban regions don’t see the need to

switch. The fact is we’ve all experienced those icy mornings when you’re rushing to work or school and the salt trucks just haven’t made it to your neighbourhood yet. These conditions are much more dangerous than just plain snow and having the right tires can keep every one safe.”

The reason why these tires are the most effective at preventing accidents is because they have deeper, spe-

cially-designed treads and are made of innovative rubber compounds that are softer and more pliant. This allows them to perform better on ice, snow and slush, but also in both dry and wet conditions when the temperature dips below 7C. Daly also suggests that it’s also important to keep an eye on your tires’ air pressure.

“Overnight temperatures can drop from 5˚ to –15˚ and this rapid

reduction can zap the air out of you tires by as much as 4 psi. An under-inflated tire can be quite dangerous, so it’s important to keep tracking your tire pressure.”

Having a safe winter is a great reason to equip your car with the best tires. Transport Canada suggests that “winter tires marked with the pictograph of a peaked mountain with a snowflake meet specific snow traction performance require-

ments, and have been designed specifically for use in winter conditions.”

Another incentive is that some insurance companies like DGI will reward their clients who use winter tires with a discount on their auto insurance.
