Critics expelled, Cummins reaches out

By Tom Fletcher Black Press VICTORIA – The B.C. Conservative Party has established a new “unity committee” after expelling or censuring 15 party members in an effort to stamp out a smouldering rebellion against leader John Cummins.

Party president Al Siebring confirmed Monday that letters have gone out to 15 members involved in efforts to oust Cummins. None are identified, and the number whose memberships have been revoked will not be disclosed, Siebring said in a statement released after weekend board meetings in Duncan.

The board approved a motion of “full confidence” in Cummins as the resurgent party prepares for a provincial election in May. The new committee is chaired by party director Daniel Brooks and includes Christine Clarke, who

ran third in the Port MoodyCoquitlam byelection won by b the NDP’s Joe Trasolini in April.

A “We recognize that there are things which can be done to improve our internal processes,” Cummins said. “The motion was clear when it said that we are looking for ways to engage our members, constituency association presidents and boards, and improve communications within our party.”

South Surrey-White Rock constituency president Allison Patton went public last week, claiming there were “at least 20” local party presidents calling on Cummins to resign.

Later she was joined at a news conference by Burnaby North constituency president Ariane Eckardt, and said Cummins had agreed to step aside but then changed his mind.

Cummins termed that account an “absolute fabrication.” He set a deadline of

Oct. 10 for party members to either unite or resign, and later said 14 people had voluntarily quit. The party said it has added 381 new members since Sept. 3, and continues to collect donations at a pace of $4,000 a week.

The party surged to about 20 per cent of voter support in recent polls, challenging the B.C. Liberals for second place behind the NDP. But as the party went through a fractious recent annual general meeting, Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen quit, and two other members including Chilliwack-Hope by-election candidate John Martin joined the B.C. Liberals.

The B.C. Conservatives attracted only 2.4 per cent of the vote in the 2009 election, and have been known more for infighting than electoral success in recent years. The last time the party achieved five per cent of voter support was 1974.

Stumbling blindly into our timber future This past week the BC Liberal government released its response to this summer’s Special Committee on Timber Supply. The Special Committee consisted of both Liberal and NDP MLAs, and its f inal report represented the unanimous agreement between the two political parties.

In essence, the government has accepted the committee’s recommendations and has “committed� to act on them. The overall intent of the government’s plan, dubbed “Beyond the Beetle,� is to keep harvest levels as high as possible for as long as possible in order to minimize any mill closures and job losses in the near to mid-term and to enable the rebuilding of the mill that burned down in Burns Lake earlier this year.

To accomplish this feat the government will allow logging in areas currently set aside for other values. They will include “marginally economic stands� into their annual allowable cut calculations, and they will pass legislation this spring to convert volume-based licenses to area-based tenures.

These fundamental changes to B.C.’s forest management and forest tenure regimes will be done without an updated inventory or any additional funding for forest health and silviculture activities. Facing budget cuts in each of the next two years, the Minister of Forests can only promise that B.C.’s forest inventory will be updated over the next 10 years.

In short, we’re going to blindly stumble into a whole new forest management regime. We need to have the courage to face reality: the traditional forest sector is going to downsize, there will be mill closures and there will be job losses.

We must undertake an immediate re-inventory of our public forests that takes into account the implications of climate change and analyzes the potential to take advantage of economic opportunities outside of our traditional timber markets. *Williams Lake Tribune. Enjoying the run Doolangers make for 50 years in comment on post office rocks Little Fort To the editor; The Auction The auction sale is over, So what is left to say?

Some junk brought ten times its worth, Some good stuff we gave away.

When we tallied up the dollars We didn’t feel too bad.

But I couldn’t help, When the smoke all cleared, To feel a little sad.

In the quiet time that lingered With the noise all left behind, When I stopped and thought of what was gone These thoughts ran through my mind.

For 50 years I worked the ground, I cleared and broke the soil.

I plowed and disced, combined and hayed, And it never seemed like toil.

I thought of that hard used iron, The few dollars that it brought, And I’d have to say in an honest way, It didn’t owe me a lot.

That old green plow with its wore down shares, Just took it as it came; Good or bad, rocks or stumps It plowed it just the same.

The tandem disc with the notched front gangs, That cut the turned up ground, Those diamond harrows hooked on behind, That leveled and packed it down.

The double disc drill that bumped along, And metered out the grain, The fields we seeded that hot, dry year When we never did get rain.

Those two old John Deere tractors When the closing bid came in It was mighty hard to see ‘em go, Like sellin’ off a friend.

To break the bond that time had sealed Through heat and cold and rain, All those years in the same old seat, That will never come again.

But there’s a time for new things, boys, A time when change must come, A time to carpet bowl and golf, In the Arizona sun.

To the editor; Some of you well remember the tales about the Doolangers from Roc Valley that Ellen Fennell wrote, and were published in the Barriere newspaper. These tales ended when my mom died in 1987, but the Doolangers resurfaced the other day, and I just happened to witness the whole thing.

I was just about to leave the Post Office, then the Doolangers arrived in their 1938 Ford truck. With loud pops, bangs and a strange pinging sound, and surrounded by a cloud of thick exhaust smoke, Dipsey headed for the curb towards his favourite parking place with the nice blue sign. All of a sudden, Dipsey hit the brakes nearly putting both of them through the windshield. “Well hot darn, Dolly, look at that big hunk of Fennell Green Stone. Now aint that just darn right decorative?�

Dolly took one look and exclaimed loudly, “But it’s in our favourite parking spot, and the nice blue sign has been moved.�

With a quick yank on the truck door, Dipsey exclaimed, “I have to check this here rock to see if it really is Fennell Green Stone.�

Dolly waited in the truck as Dipsey walked all around the rock, stopping a few times to lick it. This made people stare, and Dolly to hide behind her purse.

Finally Dipsey climbed back into the truck and to Dolly’s “Well?�, he said “It aint Fennell Green Stone.� “Then what is it?�, asked Dolly. “Well�, said Dipsey, “it’s good old Leaverright, and that’s what they shoulda done with that thing. Leaverright where they found it. Hee, hee, hee.� “Okay Dipsey, let’s go home.�

And off they went, heading for Roc Valley at the top speed of 12mph, pops, bangs, a strange pinging sound and a thick cloud of exhaust smoke.

A provincially sponsored Job Creation Program is currently being embarked upon to promote Barriere and the surrounding region.

In partnership with this venture; Lower North Thompson Community Forests, Barriere Chamber of Commerce, Thompson Okanagan Tourism, and the Thompson Nicola Film Commission.

The main directive behind this initiative is the worldwide concept of geocaching.

Geocaching is a treasure hunting game, where you use a Global Positioning System (GPS) to hide and seek containers with other participants in the activity. There are various types of the GPS, which include a cell phone equipped with GPS. There are over five million members in the geocaching community around the globe, and 1,913,022 active geocaches, and these numbers are constantly being increased. According to the traveler’s posts on the geocaching site, there have been numerous visitors to the area from all over the world, their comments being of a positive nature and their experience while geocaching in the region was thoroughly enjoyed.

It is our intent to welcome them back and to help them to discover more of the region. The geocaching community will share their adventures with others, what they have seen, and the services and accommodations offered in the their travels while participating in the treasure hunts. Barriere and surrounding region will benefit directly from this type of exposure.

A huge part in the Job Creation Program presently being undertaken, is the work underway upon the

local trail systems of Skull Mountain and the Seven Sisters Mountain Range.

Extensions are being made to key existing trails, while adding new ones to the list. This project will add accessibility and further enhance the appeal of the locations.

Within some of these trails, geocache boxes have been placed (the majority), but there are others outside of these locations. There are at present, 18 activated geocached boxes waiting to be found; the number of placements will increase as time goes on.

Meet the candidates for TNRD Area ‘O’ Two candidates from the community of Barriere have let their names be put forward to stand as candidates in the Byelection for Thompson Nicola Regional District Director of Area ‘O’. The position became vacant at the passing of Area ‘O’ Director Bonnie CruzelleMyram, and there are two years left to serve of the three year term position. TNRD Byelection voting day will be Nov. 17.

On Tuesday this reporter had an opportunity to interview both of the candidates, who are no strangers to the voters within the area.

Here is what they had to say to Star/Journal editor Jill Hayward:

Mike Fennell Mike Fennell is currently the TNRD Alternate Area ‘O’ Director, saying he took up the position at the request of previous director, Bonnie CruzelleMyram.

“Bonnie asked me to serve as her Alternate, which I agreed to,” said Fennell, I really enjoyed working with her and the many communities and people that are in Area ‘O’.

Since Bonnie has passed I have been trying to carry on her good work in the region and support those communities.”

Asked if he had plans to run again in two years to be mayor of Barriere, Fennell said, “Yes, people expect me to, and I have already said I will run again for mayor. The term of Area ‘O’ Director, and District of Barriere Mayor will both expire at the same time,” Fennell said he has found that being an area TNRD director, rather than a municipal TNRD director (which he did, while serving four years in the capacity of Mayor for the District of Barriere), is quite different. “Having worked with Bonnie as her alternate I feel comfortable in this position as I am already familiar with the workings of the TNRD,” said Fennell, “It is most important to me to see that over the next two years the Area ‘O’ Director supports and carries on all of the good works that Bonnie has done. After all, I came from a small community myself, Chu Chua, so I can easily relate to the problems and challenges that people face in the outlying rural areas.”

Asked what he saw as projects and major challenges facing Area ‘O’ in the future Fennell said, “I have had a couple of meetings with Barb Denton in Little Fort.

She does a great job managing the community hall, and is now working on trying to get road access to the Little Fort Cemetery. I am working with the community on that; but it involves getting MOT, Kinder Morgan and Telus all together as a group to solve the problems related to the access so that they all have a say. It is a complicated problem, and the answer will not happen anytime soon, but I am making plans to meet with all

of the stakeholders on Little Fort’s behalf.”

Fennell also noted that the Brennan Creek School has now been closed by School District 73. As this leaves the school property, which is approximately six acres on Adams Lake, as well as the schoolhouse empty there is now discussion on what to do with the land.

“I will be going up to Brennan Creek in a few days to discuss some of the options,” said Fennell, “The School District will also be holding a forum on Nov. 6, 6 p.m., for public input about what people want to do with the property at Brennan Creek.”

Fennell says due to the lake access that the property provides, it would be a timely opportunity for the TNRD to possibly lease the land as a Regional Park and community centre for Brennan Creek. “This is all in the discussion stages,” said Fennell, “But we need to make sure that Brennan Creek residents have a say about what happens in their community.”

Fennell also says the new Eco Depot at Louis Creek has some very interesting possibilities for Area ‘O’.

“The Eco Depot will only be using a very small portion of the 603 acres that it sits on,” noted Fennell, “This gives Area ‘O’ a place for industry and development in the future.”

He says the Eco Depot is “Coming along well, and to the best of my knowledge the Barriere Landfill closure date is Nov. 1. At that time if the Eco Depot is not ready, everything will go into bins at the Barriere Landfill and be trucked out as the final closure is started.”

Fennell says although there was originally a lot of concern about what the Eco Depot would look like, he is very happy to see that it is very well placed, and for himself, hardly notices it when coming down the Agate Bay Road hill to Louis Creek.

Fennell says the other project he is working towards is to get alternate road access through Harper Creek to Yellowhead Mines. “This will allow workers in the area to take advantage of this employment opportunity,” said Fennell, “An access road will turn an hour and forty minute commute one way into less than one hour.

Surely if all of the stakeholders work together we can build an access road that will benefit everyone.”

Lastly Fennell says he spends a lot of time concentrating on bringing jobs to the area, and that tourism is a large part of the pot in Area ‘O’.

Fennell says he feels himself to be “very lucky”. “I’m 63 years old and retired on a firefighter’s pension. I can be a full time volunteer in the communities that are close to my heart. I have the time to get out and meet people, go to meetings, volunteer for projects, and I love doing it all.”

Bill Kershaw Bill Kershaw is currently serving his first term as a Councillor for the District of Barriere, he is also a board member of Community Futures in Kamloops, where he served as chair for four years.

Asked why he wanted to take on the position of TNRD Director for Area ‘O’ if elected, Kershaw replied, “Because previously I did that job for nine years, and feel it would be a flawless transition. I have done some checking around and most of the major issues that are out there are pretty much the same as before; library, and solid waste management which is going through some major changes that were started when I previously was serving on the TNRD Board.”

Kershaw has made Barriere his home for the past 40 years, says, “We’ve come a long way, and I see we are coming to a part where I see a lot of opportunity for the valley here right now.”

Asked if he felt people would perhaps perceive there might be some conflict of interest if he not only wore a District of Barriere Councillor hat, but also a TNRD Area ‘O’ Director hat? Kershaw said, “There’s no conflict of interest. I think it will enhance what’s going on. We can be effective working with agriculture and tourism in outlying areas. Now we have the Agriplex and the fall fair grounds in Barriere, and we have to work together to get full value out of what we do have. Working together we have to really cooperate. We only have one set of taxpayers, and we have to get the best value for our dollar all the way through. The District doesn’t just promote itself, we promote trails, fishing, etc. They may not be in the District, but if the region does good, the District does good, and vice versa.”

Kershaw said his life is “made up of two things. The municipal work I do, and the hours I work for Stamer Logging. I have time to be Regional Director as well. At my age you have to be really, really busy, otherwise you just sit around.”

Kershaw notes his main priority for Area ‘O’ is the Eco Depot and solid waste management. “I haven’t been totally out in the area to see

what other priorities might be.”

He also adds he will “proudly promote the area - the Lower North Thompson Valley, and work with the Agriplex and the Rec Societies to really get things rolling in our area.”

Kershaw says he thinks the Wildfire Monument site in Louis Creek should be a joint venture between everybody. “It takes more than the District, and I think everybody should participate. It is a welldone project; the volunteers run it but they still have to fundraise. People get tired of doing the work and raising the funds as well. We have to have a lot of volunteers and support to make things work.”

Kershaw says the quick fix for the area is tourism. “We have more and more motorists going by. We have to find how to make them stop.”

Kershaw also notes that he has connections that can help get projects moved along. “I have always been able to get along with the working people - that’s my life. If people want something bad enough I will fight for anything within reason for them.”

“My pet project is to bring us all together so we can work as a group.

Because we are tourism based; Little Fort, Agate Bay, Louis Creek, the District, the Fall Fair, we have to work together.”

Kershaw says if he returns to the TNRD Board it will be advantageous to the area. “Serving on council at the District of Barriere you are one vote of seven, in the Regional District you have more of a say for the whole region. We are doing well compared to a number of other areas, but we have to remain well represented.”

Kershaw summed up his interview by saying, “I am not running against Mike as a personal thing at all. I saw a job posted and so did Mike, and we both applied for it. Now it’s up to those 700 people out there in Area ‘O’ to decide who gets it.”

Two nominated for Citizen of the Year The nominations for the 2012 Barriere Citizen of the Year, put forward this by area residents who recognize the people who make a difference in their community, are now closed. Four nominations were originally submitted, but two of the individuals have graciously declined their nominations (and requested we not publish their names), which leaves two outstanding community individuals to be recognized. This week three area service organizations will have been given the nomination information for each nominee. It will be their job to cast votes and decide who they feel should be recognized as Barriere Citizen of the Year for 2012. The name of the recipient will be published in our Thursday, Oct. 25, issue. Dates for the resultant Citizen of the Year Banquet will be announced in a future issue, including ticket information and where they can be purchased. Margaret Houben Beverly Murphy writes, “I would like to nominate Margaret Houben for Citizen of the Year. This amazing lady has her finger on the pulse of most organizations in our commu-

Keith was a charter member of the Barriere Lions Club, and one of the first drivers for the Ambulance Service in Barriere.

He was an active member of the Barriere fire department, and served as Fire Chief. He held the position as president of the Barriere Senior’s Society for four years, and was an active Director for Barriere Rural Crime Watch.

As you can see, Keith was, and still is, an active member of our community.

This month he was honoured by being presented with the Queens Diamond Jubilee medal.

Keith is still an active member, taking part in our Remembrance Day Service held each year at the local schools; he gives a talk to the students of the elementary school on the meaning of the poppy and why we “Remember” on November 11th. Keith continues to attendmeetings when he is able, and actively supports fund raising events like our Saturday meat draws and fund raising dinners.

bly acquiring some of their lands that surround this portion of road allowance.

It was decided that instead of buying the GSFP property, an exchange of lands would be the most cost-effective solution for both parties. To that end, Council members passed a motion for the first reading of District of Barriere Road Closure Bylaw No. 98.

This bylaw will now go to a public hearing for input from the citizens of Barriere.

Council members passed a motion that the District purchase the garbage truck that Chase is selling.

The next regular Council meeting will be on Oct. 15, at 7 p.m.

Volunteer and shop local for a healthy community Last week I attended the presentation ceremony for the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals that was hosted by Senator Nancy Greene Raine and MP Cathy McLeod at the Thompson Rivers University campus. There were seven recipients from our local area. They were Jill Hayward, Geordie and Manne Salle, Tina Donald, Dr. Nathan Matthew, Carman Smith and Keith Moore.

All seven recipients attended the event with their friends and family.

The presentation of these medals is fitting testament to the long standing and ongoing efforts of these individuals to give back to their community. It would be impossible to quantify in any sort of manner the value their efforts have provided to the betterment of where we all live. Their selfless contributions are an example to us all.

Just prior to the presentation one of the four cakes made for the reception disappeared into thin air, or more likely a dorm room. In my days of schooling things like a statue or Volkswagen disappeared temporarily to be found later in odd places like hanging from a bridge.

Taking a cake seems more practical though as you can at least eat it. Maybe times are changing for the better after all. The very

act of doing something significantly trivial as taking a presentation cake seems to belay the ever present feeling of apathy that can be felt in some communities.

In the past there were always people to help. There were always groups of people enthused about things that had to be done. Associations, clubs and societies all had good sized memberships that shared the workload. It was easy to organize a ball tournament, art show or a Fall Fair with many hands to help. Now the same core group that always organized these events is still there but the many hands seem to be missing.

The people that study these things say it is the economy.

People have no spare time. Both parents work and mortgages trump the giving of time or money to community activities.

If this is true how does this relate to Barriere and more importantly how can the problems be fixed?

The reality is that everyone needs to have some sort of income to survive.

How much of an income is determined by lifestyle.

High paying outof-town jobs can have a purpose, and if a defined plan is made to use those jobs to gain experience, help pay off short term

debt, or build a nest egg to start a business, then they can be very useful for individuals.

As a society we need to plan for the long term and for the future of our families and our community as a whole. We need to build stable and safe environments that will attract new residents.

There are very simple things that can be done to guarantee the sustainability of our area. Things like trying to do as much shopping locally as you can. Check out the local stores and suppliers before driving to Kamloops for your allergy pills or tomatoes. Drop into the local lumber yard and ask for a quote on materials and maybe a recommendation on a craftsperson to do the work. Stop by the local art gallery to look for that unique gift. Buy gas before leaving town and have your vehicle serviced locally.

We all know this sort of thing in the

back of our minds and it may sound trivial to be mentioning it but the fact is that if the local economy can show an increase of as little as a six per cent increase in sales, the local merchants can afford to expand and provide bigger and better services. More people will move here, and other merchants offering other services and goods will set up shop here in Barriere.

The usual events around the holiday season are currently being planned. Things like decorating of the downtown core and organizing a parade all need volunteers. If anyone can help with these events please contact the District office or the Chamber of Commerce.

There will be a byelection for the position of the Thompson Nicola Regional District Director of Area ‘O’. The election will take place on Nov. 17, 2012. I urge all eligible voters to come out and vote.

The Economic Development O Officer, Andrew Hayward gave a report on his activities during September, which included a number of meetings with investors from Saskatchewan, Ontario, Calgary, and oversees Investors.

After some discussion, it was decided that EDO Hayward would spend 10 hours in October, and 20 hours in November, assisting the Chamber of Commerce in its’ Shop Local Christmas Program.

The next meeting of the Development Committee will be on Nov. 20, at 7 p.m.

Diamond Jubilee Medal awarded to nine North Thompson Valley residents North Thompson Star/Journal Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops – ThompsonCariboo and Senator Nancy Greene Raine hosted a ceremony to approximately 300 people, on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Thompson Rivers University, to present Diamond Jubilee Medals to 33 constituents who have made outstanding contributions to their communities and country.

Of those 33, nine recipients were from the North Thompson Valley; Tina Donald (Barriere), our own Star/Journal editor Jill Hayward (Louis Creek), Dr. Nathan Matthew (Barriere), Keith Moore (Barriere), Jean Nelson (Clearwater), Geordie Salle (Barriere), Manne Salle (Barriere), Carman Smith (Barriere),

and Donald Turtiak (Blue River). Not in attenddance at the presentation, bbut also scheduled to receive Diamond Jubilee Medals at a future date are Clearwater residents, Muriel Irene Dunford, and Pauline Gregory.

“It was a great pleasure to pay tribute to the recipients who have gone above and beyond to serve their communities,” said McLeod. “The Diamond Jubilee Medal commemorates the extraordinary service of Her Majesty the Queen and are a fitting tribute to those who have made this country a more caring nation for all, helping others, giving back and going beyond the call of duty.”

Star/Journal editor Jill Hayward said she was “stuck for words” when MP McLeod called to advise her of the upcoming medal presentation.

“I had no words for

what it felt to be bestowed with such an honour,” said Hayward, “There are so many people who do so much in our valley for their communities. There are so many other good people that deserved to be in my place.”

Hayward says she was honoured to stand beside “so many wonderful volunteers”.

“All people who really make a difference, from all walks of life,” said the editor, “I was especially proud of those from the North Thompson Valley.”

The Diamond Jubilee Medal was created in honour of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne. The medal recognizes Canadians from all walks of life who have made significant contributions to Canada or whose achievements abroad have brought credit to Canada. A total of

Finding sports equipment that’s right for you

By Shawn Weninger Kamloops This Week We have become gear snobs.

I realized it last year when my son’s bike was stolen on our way across Canada and he was lucky enough to borrow his cousin’s bike for our bike trip up the west coast of Newfoundland.

He realized how lucky he was to have a road bike when he was riding the heavy borrowed bike.

When I first started road racing, I had an entry-level road bike. It served me well until finally I was able to upgrade to a lighter road bike with race wheels and I realized what I’d been missing.

I can only imagine what a really expensive bike would feel like. It will have to remain a fantasy because there is a limit.

Lately, I’ve been riding my son’s mountain bike.

My full-suspension, light mountain bike is in the shop and I haven’t wanted to cancel my riding dates.

I have enough of a challenge keeping my bike on the trails in Kenna Cartwright without going back to a hard tail, not to mention one that’s just a little too small for me.

Add to that the extra weight and I’m feeling my legs from all the uphill riding.

Plus, I’ve repeatedly almost dropped it on my head loading it on the top of my car.

When I get my bike back, I’m going to kiss it.

It doesn’t matter what kind of gear you get, there is always something lighter, faster and prettier.

Skis, canoes, kayaks, paddles, trail

runners, backpacks, trekking poles . . . you name it and there is a low end aand a high end.

Most of us can’t afford to have the best of everything, so it’s a balance between function and finances.

It’s better to have a heavy, starter mountain bike than no mountain bike at all.

I also think having had the lowerend gear first gives me an appreciation for my upgrades.

If I didn’t know what it’s like to ride the heavier version, I wouldn’t fully appreciate the lighter version.

It’s a matter of choosing which gear is worth upgrading.

For me, it’s been my bikes.

I’ll put up with heavier skis and ski-swap boots, but I have an addiction to my bikes.

Sure, I drool over some of the $10,000 bikes at the grand fondos, but I’m pretty happy with one step up from what I had in the beginning.

And, I’ve also been very careful not to ride one of those bikes, so I have no idea how it would feel.

I’ve talked to a few people who have been hesitant to get into a sport until they could buy the quality gear, but I believe it’s better to start somewhere and work up rather than miss another day of trying something you want to try.

Instructor seeks more figure-skating students

By Keith McNeill The Times Skating is more than just fun; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a way of life, according to Tanya Ney. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lifetime activity, something that you can do as an adult. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good physical activity that you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to spend a lot of time learning how to do,â&#x20AC;? said Raft Mountain Skating Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new figure-skating coach.

Figure-skating classes began the first week of October but there is still plenty of room for more students. Lessons will continue until the spring session ends on Mar. 15. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even though weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve started we definitely can take new students,â&#x20AC;? said Ney. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you can walk, you can skate.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of kids and their parents think that this is just a way into figure-skating but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good way to develop skills for

Classes for beginners start with the basics: how to fall down and get back up. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how to

do that properly, it can turn you off skating completely,â&#x20AC;? said the instructor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If I see a child fall I always tell them, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Good job falling.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Instruction is given at three levels: preCanSkate, CanSkate and StarSkate.

The latter is a pilot project that combines private and group lesson formats.

Ney began teaching figureskating in 1986 while she was still in high school.

She taught for about 20 years before taking a hiatus to bring up her girls. Now she is back at it and over the past few years has been teaching high performance skating for BC Hockey across the province.

A resident of Kamloops, she instructs at Valleyview Skating Club. She also works as a realtor with River City Realty.

Barriere curling starts this week with Friday fun night Submitted The Barriere Curling Rink has delayed their opening by a couple of days, according to Brian Bondar, the new president of the Curling Club. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A leaky valve on the ice making compressor has given us some problems and it took a couple of days to get it sorted out,â&#x20AC;? said Bondar, â&#x20AC;&#x153;However, the ice making plant is operating now and we started flooding the rink last Wednesday.â&#x20AC;?

The open house for beginner curlers on Wednesday, Oct. 17, was postponed and will be included in the Free Fun Night. The Curling Club will hold the Free Fun Night this Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m., for people of all ages to mix and mingle.

This is a great opportunity to try out the curling ice before the regular season begins.

There will be a skills competition, for a free turkey to the person who can throw a rock closest to the centre of the rings.

Curling is a sport that people can learn at any age and any ability.

There is equipment available at the Curling Rink for anyone to use that may have bad knees or backs that allows them to deliver the rock comfortably.

As of last Monday, the Ladies League has six teams registered and there is room for more teams or individuals.

There will be youth curling this year which will include: Junior Youth from 7 years old to Grade 7, and Senior Youth from Grade 8 to 12.

As well, the Curling Club has hosted Physical Education Classes from the High School and will offer those again this year. There will soon be notices at the schools regarding dates and times for these programs.

The Curling Club is also hosting a SPOOKTACULAR BINGO at the Legion Hall on Oct. 27, with doors opening at 6 p.m. Look for additional information on posters around town and advertising in this newspaper.

Enjoyable photography sailing on a B.C. ferry My wife and I recently boarded the B.C. ferry Coastal Celebration to Victoria, B.C. We parked our car, picked up our cameras, and proceeded up to the sundeck.

The day was clear blue and the ferry’s sundeck was packed with people with their cameras, all searching for joyful memories of the one-and-a-half hour ocean crossing from Tsawassen to Swartz Bay. The weather was pleasant and encouraging for those travelers who wanted to stay outdoors. When the wind became too gusty the passengers would step behind glass partitions designed to provide protection yet allow for an unobstructed view.

I think, with maybe the rare exception, the photographs being taken were of friends or family posing against the rail.

Another favourite photo was the group shot around a table,

(arm extended style with camera pointing back at the shooter), and then another favourite, of course, was of other boats passing by. And finally, there were lots of shaky pictures of the luxury homes that were perched on the shores of small rocky islands.

One has to admit, after taking that picture of a spouse or friend standing in front of some scenic location, all the rest are just repetition.

I took my wife, Linda’s picture with her holding her camera, a little tired with all the traveling, hair blowing in all directions, standing next to a white rail with blue water behind her. I’ll treasure that picture because it’s her, but she just smiled when I showed her that not so flattering image.

I had made the obligatory portrait and was about to be off when a guy and his family

walked up and handed me his little digicam and asked me to take a group picture. I posed them, made one fellow remove his sunglasses and changed my angle a couple times as I took their family-on-the-ferry portrait.

My wife later mentioned that the fellow had been watching and she was sure was waiting for a moment when he could ask me to take their picture.

I am sure he had just looked around for the guy with the biggest camera. I guess I won.

Although, unfamiliar with the large white, ocean going vessel vibrating under my feet, I was fascinated with all the unique doors and windows, wall mounted things like pipes, speakers, all the odd railings, long walkways and so much more. However, most interesting; it had people, lots of people from all types of places. We heard many languages being spoken.

* O H N % N MA N I wandered that windy deck photographing anything that caught my eye, and that included photographing the people. I had my 18-200mm lens on the camera, so it was easy to be inconspicuous. Those in front of my camera either thought I was, like them, interested in some feature beside or behind them in the ocean, or like a guitar-playing fellow I photographed, just didn’t care.

Anyway, I wanted to photograph how they were standing, the play of light on them, the ship, and what was around them, I tried for unusual angles through stairs and made silhouettes.

Almost all my imag-

es were side or back shots, after all I didn’t know them and wasn’t interested in their faces, just how they fit in with everything else on the ferry, or maybe I should be calling it a ship.

The hour-and-a-half trip gave me plenty of time to search the ferry for things to photograph, but I was enjoying myself so much that before I knew it the fun was over with the sound of the ship’s horn and an announcement to return to our cars.

These are my thoughts this week.

Orange Scented Beet Soup 1 large onion diced 1 tsp minced garlic 2 tsps corn oil 1 strip orange rind (1/2 inch by 3 inch) 2 tsps dried dill 4 cups chicken broth 1 bay leaf 3cups very thinly shredded cabbage 2 cups diced cooked beets 1 cup diced red potato 1 tsp honey 1/2 tsp ground black pepper In a 3 qt stock pot over medium heat, saute the onions & garlic in the oil for 5 mins, until translucent. Add the strip of orange rind & dill. Saute stirring constantly for 1 min. Add the stock & bay leaf. Cover & bring to a boil, reduce the heat & simmer for 10 mins. Add the cabbage, beets, potatoes & honey. Simmer for 10 to 20 mins, until the potatoes are tender. Stir in

Creamy Butternut Squash Soup 1 butternut squash peeled, seeded & cut into cubes 1 large carrot peeled & thickly sliced 1 red pepper, seeded & chopped 1 large onion thinly sliced 3 cloves garlic, crushed salt & ground pepper 1/3 cup cream cheese 1 tbsp fresh chives finely sipped 1 tbsp parsley chopped Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a large stock pot. Add the squash, carrot, red pepper, onion, garlic, pinch of salt, then cover & cook gently for 30 mins or until vegetable are tender. Puree the soup. Take the pot off the heat & let it cool slightly. Tip the cooled mixture into a blender or food processor & puree until smooth. Add the cream cheese & blend again. Return to the pot, stir in the herbs & reheat gently.

Serve.

Add the onions & garlic. Stir, cover the pot & cook for 10 mins, stirring frequently. Add the cabbage, celery, vinegar & caraway seeds. Cover & cook 10 mins, stirring frequently. October is Canadian Library Month October is Canadian Library Month, and this year the local library is having a catalogue scavenger hunt. Drop by the Barriere Library to get a list of items that can be found in the library system. Search the online catalogue and figure out which branch ‘owns’ each of the items. Genealogy 101: Winter driving warning for motorists from police and Argo To test DNA, or not to test – that is the question

By Margaret Houben North Thompson Star/Journal One of the more interesting new ways to research your family tree, is to submit a sample for DNA testing.

DNA testing can determine if two people are related, or descend from the same ancestor; it can tell you if you are related to others with the same surname; and provide clues about your ethnic origin.

While DNA tests have been around for many years, it is only recently that the cost to do the testing has come within financial reach of the average person. Currently the cost averages between $100 and $400 per test, depending on which company you ask.

If you apply for a kit, you receive the necessary bits to take a mouth swab and send it securely through the mail to the lab, and within a month or two the results are ready.

There are two main types of tests available.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is the type of DNA passed on from the mother to both male and female children, without any mixing. Therefore, your mtDNA is the same as

your mother’s, which is the same as her mother’s, etc. This form oof DNA changes very sslowly, so it isn’t as useful for determining close relationship. For instance, if two people have an exact match, then they share a common maternal ancestor, but it is hard to determine if this is a recent ancestor, or one who lived hundreds of years ago. It is important to note that a male’s mtDNA comes only from his mother, and is not passed on to his children.

Y-DNA, on the other hand, follows the Y chromosome in the DNA. It is only available for males, since only males receive this chromosome.

Tiny chemical markers on the Y chromosome create distinctive patters know as haplotypes, that distinguish one male lineage from another. Shared markers can indicate relatedness, although not to the exact degree.

Then, of course, there are the Autosomal DNA tests; this test looks at genetic markers found in the 22 chromosome pairs which contain randomly mixed DNS from both parents. This DNA, since it it inherited from both

parents and all four grandparents, can be used to test for all sorts of family ties.

So when checking around to find a price you can afford, keep in mind what types of testing the company will provide. If you are a woman, and the site you are looking at only provides Y-DNA testing, then it is not for you.

Whether or not a DNA test is something worth doing, will depend a lot on how much information you already have, and whether such a test is likely to help fill in any blanks. For instance, I can follow most of my dad’s tree back to the 1400’s and nearly 100 percent of them come from the same basic area of the Netherlands. Tracing that side of the family wouldn’t likely reveal anything new worth the cost of the test. But on my mom’s side it could reveal a great deal, including whether or not there is any Jewish blood on her side of the family.

The truck has a 575 HP engine and can carry 14 - 16 cubic meters of sand, nearly twice the other trucks, and an important factor when considering the long distances involved. Its carbide bullet blade can cut off compact snow while its reversible front blade can pivot left or right.

Argo’s policy for their snowplows to pull over simply to let other motorists pass.

If they do pull over, it is an indication that the road ahead is in relatively good condition.

“If we’re only going 40 or 50 km/hr, it’s an indication that that is the safe speed,” Bone said.

Last winter a commercial truck tried to pass an Argo plow on the right. It struck the plow and went into the ditch. Even though he was obviously in the wrong, the truck’s driver complained that the snowplow had been interfering with his schedule.

Argo hosts a winter awareness meeting every fall, with representatives from all agencies and organizations involved, such as police, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and tow truck operators.

Forest fire still burning north east of Barriere North Thompson Star/Journal Kevin Skrepnek, Information Officer for Kamloops Fire Centre - Wildfire Management Branch, reported on Tuesday regarding the forest fire that has been burning for just under a week north east of Barriere in the Bottrell Creek Road area.

“We currently have a fuel-free guard built around the fire, which insofar has kept it from growing over the past few days,” said Skrepnek, “Our main challenges with this incident have been intense winds whipping the fire up, difficult terrain (it’s burning in a very

steep area) and it’s remote location (it ( requires a considerable hike for our o crews to reach it). It is currently estimated at two hectares in size.

With high winds expected to continue, it’s possible that smoke could still be visible from it for days to come.”

Although the fire is in a fairly remote area, there are a few homes that can see the fire. Those residents are warily keeping an eye on the fire’s progress, and the efforts of the fire crews.

Some East Barriere Lake residents say they have been experiencing quite a bit of smoke in the area caused by the fire.
