Campaign raises awareness of dogs in training Officials with The Yellow Dog Project aim to be recognized worldwide

A

new campaign recently started in Red Deer aims to raise public awareness of dogs who need a little extra space due to a variety of different issues.

According to their web site The Yellow Dog Project was created to bring awareness to dogs who need space while training, recovering from surgery or being rehabilitated. To show this, dogs could have a yellow ribbon or yellow waste bag tied to their leash or wear a yellow bandana – just as long as it is highly visible to others.

“It’s a simple campaign so that people can notice the yellow from a distance and know that this dog needs space whether it’s a puppy in training and they’re going to jump all over someone, or if it’s a dog that has just had surgery and it’s something that you can’t see, or if they are re-

active or a special needs dog. It’s really important that a dog is respected in all of these aspects. Yellow means caution,” said Tara Palardy, founder of The Yellow Dog Project.

“A big part of The Yellow Dog Project needs to be training people on how to say ‘hi’ to dogs. Some people think that the yellow ribbon is an admission of guilt, but it’s not, it’s saying that your dog is in training to get better from the fact that they react.

This is not for people who have straightout aggressive dogs. You need to talk to a dog trainer, behaviourist or whatever and get that dealt with. This is for those people who have already talked to their trainer or behaviourist and are now working on the issues.

“For instance, we have a dog Traxx who does not do well when people approach him. But if he can approach you, it’s no problem.

Palardy had seen a poster on the Internet from Sweden with a similar idea to The Yellow Dog Project, and decided to take it and make it into something bigger. “I had mentioned the idea to a few of my clients and they thought it would be great – to get instant awareness. We started with just our clients using it. We’ve had so much interest in our facebook page that now we have over 45 countries involved. There are pockets of people all over the world doing something similar to this, but this is the first organized group and campaign of its kind.”

She added initially the awareness started with the “dog community” including owners, trainers, veterinarians etc. and now the challenge is to create awareness in the community as a whole.

“Through Yellow Dog I hope to be recognized worldwide through cities and countries and bylaws rather than just people – meaning cities adopting it and promoting it, government agencies promoting it,” she said. “I want it to be an educational tool and be able to go into schools and providing children with dog safety. Children are the next generation that are going to grow up and have another dog. And we hope to even have adult educational programs as well.

“I just want this campaign to get to the point where no one has to ask questions anymore, it’s just known.”

Changes to City water utility rates

BY ALF CRYDERMAN Red Deer Express Starting Jan. lst, residents of Red Deer will see a change in how their costs for water and wastewater will be calculated.

The fixed monthly charge will go down, while the cost for the actual amount of water used will go up. So the less water residents’

use, the lower the water and wastewater bills should be. The changes, to be phased in over five years, are meant to be revenue neutral, but encourage water conservation and still meet revenue requirements. City utilities are designed to be self-supporting. “Before this residents had no way to influence their utility bills. This shift, which is happen-

ing over five years, means people will actually see a difference on their utility bills. Some bills will go up a little bit, some will go down,” said Councillor Paul Harris. “But the key message is that they (residents) have influence over that bill. We didn’t have that before. We’ve heard a lot from citizens, that people wanted to be able to affect their bills and they’ve complained, that I only use two cubic metres of water but my neighbours get the same bill and they water the lawn every day. So flat fees will go down and

usage fees will go up.”

Paul Goranson, director of development services for the City, added, “It moves from more of a fixed fee to more of a variable or usage based fee and now a portion of your wastewater bill will be based on the amount of water you use.” He said it creates an opportunity for residential water users to affect their bill. Funding requests postponed

BY ALF CRYDERMAN Red Deer Express City council is still looking at two funding requests, one for $2 million from Red Deer College and one for $60,000 from Central Alberta Theatre (CAT).

Both requests were on City council’s agenda on Monday, but both were tabled to the Oct. 29 meeting. They were put off because the City is waiting to receive additional information on the RDC request and a more detailed solvency plan from CAT. CAT, founded in 1970, is facing serious financial problems and asked for the $60,000 as emergency operating capital. Without this bridge funding, officials with

CAT have said, it will be forced to turn over operation of the Memorial Centre to the City.

The funding for RDC, which the City has partnered with on projects previously, involves commemoration of the College Arts Centre’s 25th anniversary, the 50th anniversary of the College itself and Red Deer’s centennial. The City’s contribution would be used to leverage provincial grants and community contributions for an Arts Centre technology expansion, growth of the downtown Donald School of Business, expansion of the Library Commons and a proposed partnership with CAT to enhance the City Centre stage.

Council votes down plan for Clearview North

BY ALF CRYDERMAN Red Deer Express City council voted Monday night against a bylaw that would have seen the Red Deer Native Friendship Centre Society build a cultural centre with attached low-income or affordable housing in Clearview North. The four-acre site is located just south of 67 St. and east of the Gaetz Sanctuary.

However, council also voted unanimously in favour of a motion to work with the Native Friendship Society to find a more suitable location in the City for the society’s plan.

Administration was asked to come back to council with some suggestions in four months. Only Councillor Buck Buchanan voted in favour of the original bylaw. Councillor Cindy Jefferies was absent.

Area residents organized and opposed the higher density development, saying it would increase traffic and crime, and lower property values. Clearview resident Bev-

Tanya Schur, executive director of the Red Deer Native Friendship Society said, “I think it’s the beginning of a project that will bring our community together, where our housing and culture will be celebrated in Red Deer.

We are, of course, disappointed about that four acres of land. We’ve waited a long time, a very long time, to see our culture celebrated and this is the beginning of that. I was very pleased to hear council make this a priority with a deadline. That’s what we’ve been waiting for. We’ve been talking about this since 2008 – this is a step in the right direction.”

Mayor Morris Flewwelling said while the City tried hard to make the project happen, he expressed the feelings of most councillors when he said they couldn’t go against the wishes of the public.

Councillor Dianne Wyntjes added she was disappointed they weren’t able to make the project work. “But my heart tells me that at the end of the day we’ll be better off. If we’d passed the bylaw perhaps it would have been very challenging for the Native Friendship Society and we don’t wish that on any group going into a new community.”

Councillor Lynne Mulder added she was happy with the decision that was ultimately made.

“I think it was evident that all of us here put a tremendous amount of thought into it. We did a lot of reading, a lot of listening and I think we made the right decision. I think the Clearview Ridge citizens felt heard and I’m hoping that the aboriginal people do too. It wasn’t the right site or the right time and I believe we would have set it up to fail. We would have had a divisive neighbourhood before it even started. When you’re looking at a project like that you want the very best for the community. I’m pleased we put it to bed for now and I look forward to working on a new aboriginal property site.”

Council’s decision leaves the land involved in a bit of limbo. The City received the land from the province in 2011 with the restriction that it be used for affordable housing for at least 15 years, but now it goes back to it’s original zoning for single family and multiple housing. City Manager Craig Curtis says the City will approach the province for possible solutions and perhaps do a land swap.

Council faced determined opposition from area residents over the proposal for the cultural centre and affordable housing. Dozens of residents were in City council chambers on Monday night to see how council would respond to their many letters, e-mails and petitions. United Way campaign off to successful start The United Way has reached 34% of its campaign goal.

“Our main focus has been personally connecting with our local businesses and donors to let them know that their community needs their support,” said John Knoch, 2012 campaign cabinet co-chair. “ We also have been showing them how giving to United Way is making a difference and changing peoples’ lives.”

About $675,024 of the $1.99 million for the campaign has been raised so far and the money will go to work in Central Alberta in just a few months.

“The impact that donors can have through United Way is vast,” said Robert Mitchell, CEO of United Way of Central Alberta.

“We are not only supporting programs and services, but are providing emergency funding to agencies

in need. We’ve also created two new grants that help registered charities in the health and social sectors with capital projects and professional development.

“We look at gaps in our social service sector and are working to fill them to ensure that our community is fully supported and that everyone is receiving the best possible care.

“This is why a successful campaign is so crucial. Each year the demands increase and we are trying our best to meet those demands, without the support of the community, we can’t fill all the gaps.”

This year’s call to action is ‘Change Starts Here,’ and United Way has focused its marketing strategies around local people who have been helped by local donors to illustrate that change is already happening in Central Alberta.

“By continuing to remind donors that the money raised stays in Central Alberta, it’s been easy for some new companies to join the movement, including Trevita and Nexus,” said Buck Buchanan, 2012 campaign cabinet co-chair.

The money raised during the 2012 United Way campaign is put directly back into the community and provides consistent funding to over 30 programs and services in Central Alberta.

Last year, 19,613 children and youth received mentorship opportunities, camp experiences, nutrition, education support and tools to reach their full potential.

Altogether, over 107,000 people in Central Alberta were helped thanks to donor dollars raised during campaign.

OPINION Raising awareness October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month and although we hear it often, it’s true – almost everyone has been touched by cancer in some way or another whether it be a family member, friend, co-worker or even yourself who has battled the disease.

According to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation web site, an estimated one in nine Canadian women are expected to develop breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. In 2012, it is estimated that 22,700 Canadian women and 200 Canadian men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canadian women and the third leading cause of death after heart disease and lung cancer.

A successful fundraiser was recently held in support of breast cancer awareness. The CIBC Run for the Cure took place last month in Red Deer and across Canada. Over $30 million was raised.

In Red Deer alone, there were 1,235 participants at the event and more than $256,500 was raised here. Now, that is something Red Deerians can be proud of.

In addition, organizers are gearing up for Movember, which kicks off next month. ‘Movember’ has become a worldwide campaign in recent years as well.

The movement was launched back in 2003 by some guys in

Australia who wanted to bring back the moustache into fashion while raising money for prostate cancer research. Since its beginnings in Melbourne Australia, Movember has grown to become a global movement inspiring more than 1.1 million ‘Mo Bros’ and ‘Mo Sistas’ to participate.

There are now formal campaigns in Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., Canada, the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and Ireland. Last year, $125.7 million was raised around the world during Movember, with 854,288 men signing up for the cause.

According to Prostate Cancer Canada, it develops as a result of dietary, environmental and heredity factors (more research is needed to identify its causes and prevent the disease). Prostate cancer is also turning up in men in their 40s.

One in seven men will be diagnosed with the disease and it’s the most common cancer to afflict Canadian men. Prostate cancer has no symptoms in its earliest, most curable stage, and the good news is that more than 90% of prostate cancer cases are curable if detected and treated in their earliest stages.

Although these two campaigns are both successful ones and garner much interest and create conversation and awareness, we can only continue to hope that a cure will be found in both cases and we can put an end to both of these devastating diseases.

Gratitude is something that cannot be imposed Even though Thanksgiving Day is behind us, we can still reflect on what it means to be grateful.

Thanks + giving = Thanksgiving. Time to reflect on what you’ve been given and to give thanks back. That’s the idea anyway but gratitude isn’t something that can be imposed.

Children are born not wanting more than to be loved, given nourishment, kept safe and warm. Most parents do a wonderful job of meeting these needs and our children’s genuine gratitude is reflected in their loving hugs, smiles and giggles. As they grow and are exposed to other influencers, they begin looking beyond their needs into the world of wants.

DIMERMAN And if you’re anything like most parents wanting to keep your children smiling and loving, you may give in to many of their gimmes. You may even over indulge them. Fast forward to a frightening awakening – you begin to see your children as spoiled brats.

Never satisfied with what they have, always wanting bigger and better, wanting what they say all the other

kids in the neighbourhood have and punishing you by keeping their distance when they don’t get what they want the minute they want it. But wait a minute – are they to blame? Don’t we have to take responsibility for creating this monster? With the best of intentions – who can blame us for wanting to be loved – our children have been shown how not to be satisfied with what they have by getting too much and too often. With so much at their disposal, things lose their meaning. Not just material things, but even the valuable time and effort we give of ourselves.

Just following our direction to say ‘thank you’ doesn’t guarantee our chil-

dren truly are. However, a genuine feeling of gratefulness will generally lead to growing up happier. Feeling grateful for what they have affects their overall sense of well being. Looking around and feeling a sense of gratitude for what surrounds them in the present is the best ‘present’ of all. Feeling grateful for being able to afford luxuries, for every day acts such as being able to reach into the fridge for food or switching on the furnace to keep warm are very important.

So, what’s a parent to do?

If your child spends more time nagging for something than she does enjoying it once it’s received, is it too late to reverse the situa-

tion? No. Harder maybe, but not impossible. The trick is not to go from all to nothing. Once you’ve identified the problem, work at changing things gradually.

Next birthday or holiday, instead of buying lots of gifts, think of buying less items that are not so extravagant. Consider purchasing or creating an experience that you can enjoy as a family instead.

As well, make sure that you are modelling appreciation for what you have too.

Say what you are grateful for out loud – your child’s initiative for putting his dish in the dishwasher, a loving family, the ability to afford a warm pair of winter boots. Don’t lecture about starving children in

Africa but create opportunities for your child to see people in less fortunate positions. Stop to speak to a homeless person on the street. He or she may not be so scary after all. Your child may learn a whole lot from this stranger without your having to say anything.

The bottom line is the more we give, the more our children want. The more they want, the less grateful they are for what they have. So, the next time you feel guilty about not giving into a want, consider that you’re doing your child a favour.

Local thoughts regarding the current NHL hockey lockout I grew up watching NHL hockey. By the time I hit my 20s, my interest in it was rapidly declining. Really, my interest should have come to a halt in 1972 when Team Canada beat the USSR by slashing, hacking and cheating. We should consider that a loss. We should admit our inferiority instead of boast.

Hockey continues to go downhill. Team loyalty among players is based on what team will pay the largest salary. Ticket prices are preposterously high. And role models for boys should be found among men who do something more with their lives than play a game for monetary gain.

“In the fall of 2007 when we had trouble securing a fluoride supplier, Dr. Steven Patterson from Alberta Health Services came to help council and senior administration sift through the mountain of information by way of a power point presentation and a Q & A period. Dr. Patterson’s presentation had me realize that my own poor dental health may have been related to the lack of fluoridated water while growing up. In consultation with my dentist and dental hygienist, they assured me of the huge benefits of fluoridation of our drinking water. I researched the issue and found many health organizations such as the Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Dental Association, Health Canada, Alberta Health Services, and the World Health Organization endorses fluoride in drinking water. It is the most cost effective way to prevent dental decay and I therefore support fluoridization,” said Wong. “In the 2010 civic election, I do not recall any of the candidates having fluoride as a plank in their platform. A question was posted on the Red Deer Public Library’s electionforum asking “If you are elected, will you vote against fluoride in our City water?” A couple of candidates said ‘yes’ and a couple said ‘no’ and the other 11 either did not answer or were awaiting further research.”

He added the issue of fluoride arose again last year from a Notice of Motion calling for a plebiscite on the issue of fluoride in our drinking water. The Communications and Strategic Planning Department were charged with setting up a consultation on a decision making process for fluoride.

“First, we had a web survey last fall that drew 511 responses and 48 per cent respondents wanted a decision based on in depth consultation. Then we had a face to face consultation at a Community Café in City Hall wherein just over 20 people (including two from the dental community) attended to chat with council,” said Wong.

“We had expected more attendance. Next we had a one-on-one discussion with City councillors through an online daytime forum on seven occasions which drew 172 participants that produced 602 comments (mostly anti-fluoride). And, the final step last month was a Speaker Session held at noon between Dr. James Beck and Dr. Digby Horne. It was sparsely attended, however at 5 p.m. attendance increased in the Q & A session.

“There was an even amount of speakers for and against fluoride in our water supply. On Oct. 29th, council will debate the fluoride issue and the options are that council decides to eliminate, keep, or reduced the amount of fluoride in our water or put the question to our public in the form of a plebiscite during our 2013 civic election.”

He added council was informed that on the same day as the Speaker Session, Phoenix, Arizona voted to continue fluoridating their city’s water supply and the following day, Portland, Oregon voted 5-0 to approve a policy fluoridating its community water system which serves 930,000 people.

“In February the three seniors on council had the opportunity to listen to a presentation on fluoride by Dr. Art Conn, assistant chief dental officer with Health Canada who was in Red Deer to address the Central Alberta Dental Society,” said Wong. “Dr. Conn’s presentation was very informative and current which included that three municipalities in Quebec (Mount Joli - 2011, Dorval – 2008 and Trois Rivieres pop.131,338 - 2012) have resumed the practice of fluoridation. In Dorval’s case the percentage of Kindergarten children developing dental caries doubled after water fluoridation was halted in 2003, rising from 8 per cent to 17 per cent in 2006. This is a mistake to be avoided.”

Do you think the public as a whole is well informed about fluoride? Do you think the City did a good job in making sure the public was educated?

“The public as a whole is not well informed about fluoride. The City could do a better job educating the public. The City started the conversation on this issue and there were many letters to the editor, emails to council, as well as some facebook sites postings,” said Wong. “If we are to go to a plebiscite, we will need to intensify our education process by having an evening or weekend information session prior to the election, as well as newspaper ads and notices in our utility bills. Perhaps the interest in this issue could increase election turnout.”

Alberta on its way to becoming third largest province in Canada After having overtaken Saskatchewan in the 1930s, Alberta has been by far the most populous province on the Canadian Prairies.

British Columbia, however, holds the title for all of western Canada, but if current growth rates continue, Alberta could capture that prize, too.

The gap between the population of B.C. and Alberta peaked in 1997 when B.C. reached 3.95 million – almost 1.2 million more souls than those living in Alberta.

But since that point, Alberta’s population growth has shifted into high gear. B.C.’s growth, on the other hand, has been slower.

Over the last 15 years, Alberta’s population has expanded by 37%, reaching 3.87 million in the third quarter of 2012. At the same time, B.C.’s population has grown by only 17%.

Much of Alberta’s swelling population has been driven by a hot job market (albeit interrupted temporarily during the downturn of 2009-2010). B.C.’s growth, by contrast, has been due more to international immigration, as well as demographics.

Victoria and Kelowna are popular cities in which to retire.

There is no guarantee that either province will continue to grow at the same pace. B.C., for example, could see its rate pick up as more Canadian baby boomers enter retirement.

And Alberta’s strong job market shows no sign of easing up. But if both provinces do continue to grow at these rates, Alberta will surpass B.C. and become the third largest province in Canada by the year 2029.

Kiwanis Club marks six decades of volunteer service On Friday, Oct. 26, the Kiwanis Club of Red Deer will be holding a special charter night to celebrate more than 60 years of volunteer service. The Club has a truly outstanding record of contributions to our community.

DAWE The Kiwanis Club of Red Deer was first established in October 1951.

The City at the time had a population of only 7,000. However, with Alberta’s great post-war era under way, the community was beginning to grow very rapidly.

The new club was officially sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Calgary Downtown and had a promising 24 charter members.

However, the Charter Night was not without incident. The potato salad proved to be tainted. Many people went home with significant gastric and intestinal distress.

While the Kiwanis Club saw support of youth as one of its mandates, it also saw support of seniors and health care as another important area of interest. Consequently, in 1952-1953, the Club came up with the idea of creating low-cost rental accommodations for seniors.

A six-acre parcel of land was acquired on the south hill. In November 1953, the Twilight Homes Foundation was created by the Kiwanis Club to lead the initiative.

In June 1954, work began on a set of ‘cottages’ to provide housing for senior couples.

Shortly thereafter, the Kiwanis Club and Twilight Homes Foundation began work on a seniors housing complex that included support services. It was the first lodge project in Alberta and probably in all of Canada.

The uniqueness of the initiative was underscored by the attendance of Premier Ernest Manning at both the sod turning ceremonies in June 1955 and the official opening on May 18, 1956.

The Twilight Lodge and Cottages proved very popular and were soon filled to capacity. Consequently, there was a great deal of additional construction of seniors’ housing over the next 25 years. As well, a second lodge, the Pines, was built in 1975.

Meanwhile, Kiwanis commenced a number of other significant projects and programs. In 1954, 80 acres were purchased at Sylvan Lake for Camp Sherbino, a wilderness style camp for Girl Guides and Rangers.

In 1964, the first Kiwanis Music Festival was staged.

It quickly became one of the leading youth musical competitions in Central Al-

berta. In 1986, this highly successful annual event was reorganized as the Red Deer Festival of the Performing Arts.

In 1977, Kiwanis began work on a social and recreation centre for seniors in the downtown area. The City’s first telethon raised an amazing amount of money for the project.

The Golden Circle was soon successfully completed. The popularity of the facility was such that a major addition was constructed in 1980-81.

In the spring of 2001, the Kiwanis Safety City opened on a 3.5 acre site along 30 Ave. This remarkable facility promotes accident and injury prevention and includes a unique mini-streetscape as part of the children’s safety training programs.

In the past several years, the Twilight Homes Foundation has ended its ownership and management of seniors’ housing in Red Deer.

However, it continues to be a significant donor/contributor to the community.

There is an almost endless list of projects and services either launched or supported by the Kiwanis Club/Twilight Homes Foundation. For example the Red Deer Youth and Volunteer Centre was an initiative of the Waskasoo Kiwanis Club, which had been chartered in 1964 and continued to serve the community until it merged with the Red Deer Kiwanis Club in 1994.

There has been significant support for the Red Deer Regional Hospital, Public Library, Alberta Special Olympics, Ronald MacDonald House, Red Deer Museum and Archives, Little Chief Park, Festival of Trees and the Christmas Carol Festival.

Space does not allow a complete list, but support from Kiwanis Club/Twilight Homes Foundation literally totals millions of dollars over the past 60 years.

This year’s haunted house

BY TANIS REID Red Deer Express The 22nd annual Zed 99 Haunted House in support of the Boys and Girls Club of Red Deer will be taking place Oct. 1931.

The haunted house is located at 7710 – 50th Ave. in the Lion Plaza.

“We have a wonderful location this year,” said John Johnston, the event manager of the Boys and Girls Club of Red Deer.

The attraction will be nearly 18,000 sq.-ft. – the biggest it has ever been.

Every year the spirited house gets bigger and better than in the past, and this year is definitely no exception.

After 22 years the standards are set extremely high and Johnston said this year will not disappoint.

“We have had people

walk into the lobby and just say ‘Wow!’ It is all about presentation.

The public will be very ‘wowed’ this year.”

This event is very interactive and as such allows for a different experience every time a patron enters.

Last year over 7,000

people experienced the haunted house. This year it is projected that the mansion will have 7,500 8,000 visitors.

This year’s theme is ‘Lost Souls - The darkness holds secrets that time forgot.’

Visitors will enter Darklore Mansion and

there they will meet a guest in the main Grande Room who will tell them the legend and the story of the mansion. Then the terrifying adventure begins.

“The attendance is growing every year,” said Johnston.

“As this event grows and grows, one year it will be a $100,000 fundraiser and we will have 10,000 people coming through.”

All of the programs that are run by the Boys and Girls Club have no fees associated with them.

That is why this fundraiser is so important, he said. And as the Club grows, so do the operating costs.

Red Deer used to have only two communitybased clubs, the downtown location and the north hill location, but as Red Deer is growing so is the Club.

Events like this depend on the help and dedication of volunteers.

There are approximately 200 volunteers who have devoted themselves to making this scary mansion a reality.

A dedicated committee of 12 volunteers has been working year-round to make this fundraiser possible.

“This year the volunteers are just incredible,” said Johnston.

“They really went beyond expectations. “These are people who really

have a passion for Halloween but also really believe in the cause.”

The haunted house, presented by Border Paving, will be an evening of fun and scary entertainment and a great way to make a difference in the lives of children.

General admission for

all ages is $10. Reserved ‘Fast Pass’ tickets, which avoid line-ups, are $12.

Sod turning for new Catholic school

BY TANIS REID Red Deer Express A sod turning ceremony was held last Friday for the new Catholic school that is to be built in the Clearview Ridge subdivision of Red Deer.

After an opening prayer for the ceremony and a scripture reading, attendees had a moment to reflect in silence before Deacon Claude Baril gave a blessing of the site where the new Father Henri Voisin School will be built.

Some of the people that were involved in the ceremony in a special way were a group of Grade 5 students from Maryview School in Red Deer. Directed by instructor Tammy Davis they lead the ceremony attendees in a round of Geron Davis’ song Holy Ground.

schools,” said Superintendent of Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Paul Mason. “We look forward to the opening of Father Henri Voisin School in September of 2014.”

Initially the school will be a Kindergarten to Grade 6 school, however, there is a possibility of expansion. They are projecting to have approximately 200 students when they open.

“With the population growing in Red Deer we expect that to grow quite quickly,” said Mason. “This school is much needed here in the north side of Red Deer to further establish a Catholic school presence in the north end and we are looking forward to that for sure.”

Mason said that a new high school in Red Deer is also needed and they are hoping it will be announced in a slate of 50 new schools to be built around the province.

Mason recognized that a lot of people have worked very hard to get to this point.

“We are very pleased and encouraged with the opportunity in front of us,” he said.

Another opportunity that the school is looking to leverage or utilize here is the nearby senior’s centre. POLICE BRIEFS POLICE CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE COLLISION The Red Deer City RCMP Traffic Section is continuing the investigation into the fatal hit and run collision involving a pedestrian in the early morning hours of Oct. 6th.

Brent Robert Cameron, 24, of Red Deer, has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision and public mischief.

His vehicle, a 2010 light brown Subaru Outback, has been identified as the vehicle who struck Paul Gabriel Bertin, 18.

Bertin died of the injuries he sustained in the collision.

The investigation has revealed that there may have been numerous vehicles traveling west on the Taylor Dr. bridge at the time of the collision and the minutes afterwards, before police arrived. Police are asking that anyone that may have been in the westbound lane of the bridge between the hours of 1:50 a.m. and 2:10 a.m. to come forward and speak with police. Any information will be helpful into this investigation.

MAN CHARGED WITH ROBBERY A man has been arrested in connection with two armed robberies that took place at a local bank earlier this year.

Philip Glen Noel, 51, was arrested by police for the armed robberies at the Servus Credit Union from July 9th and Oct. 4th. He has been charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of committing an offence while masked, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, possession of property obtained by crime and four counts of breach of a recognizance.

Noel has been remanded in custody, his first appearance is set for Oct. 22nd. He is believed to be responsible for other robberies within in the province.

Red Deer RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance in locating the businesses where Noel has been purchasing his disguises. If anyone has had Noel as a customer please contact Const. Ian Ihme at 403-406-2436.

POLICE INVESTIGATE THREE ROBBERIES Red Deer City RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the culprit or culprits responsible for three robberies in the City.

On Oct. 2 at 10:34 p.m., a female was dropping off a night deposit at the TD Bank located at 6320 50th Ave. when a lone male approached her and attempted to take the deposit from her. A struggle for the deposit ensued and the male fled away on foot. The victim was not injured.

On Oct. 3 at 1:02 a.m., a lone male entered the Petro Canada located at 3350 50 Ave. and demanded money. The clerk gave the male an undisclosed amount of money and fled on foot.

The suspect is described as having a skinny build, about 5’4” with a pocked/scarred face. He was wearing a black hat, black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Also on Oct. 3 at 2:41 a.m., a lone male entered the Travelodge Hotel located at 2807 50th Ave., pulled out a knife and demanded money. The male then fled on foot with an

undisclosed amount of money. The suspect is described as Caucasian with a thin build and a pocked/scarred face.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the male or males responsible for these robberies contact the Red Deer City RCMP at 403-406-2300.

CHARGES UPGRADED IN HIGHWAY CRASH A man who was allegedly involved in a crash last month on Hwy. 20 has had his charges upgraded.

Matthew Lawrence Engelman, 24, of Lacombe has been charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and refusing to provide a breath sample, where at the time of the refusal he knew or ought to have known that the operation of a motor vehicle caused an accident resulting in bodily harm to another person, whose death ensued.

Engelman had initially been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and refusing to provide a breath sample.

The charges stem from a two-vehicle collision which occurred north of Sylvan Lake on Hwy. 20 at the Aspelund Rd. on Sept. 21 at 9 p.m.

It is alleged that Engelman’s vehicle crossed the centerline and struck another truck head on.

The driver of the second vehicle, Randy Pinch, 41, of Breton, was airlifted from the scene via STARS Air Ambulance to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton shortly after the collision. He died in hospital as a result of his injuries last week.

Engelman is set to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on Oct. 17.

RCMP INVESTIGATE ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON The investigation continues after an assault took place in an east side neighbourhood last week.

On Oct. 3 at 11:23 a.m. police responded to a compliant that a male had been assaulted with a weapon in the Eastview area. It was reported that two males had fled from the scene.

To ensure public safety police had Joseph Welsh Middle School go into lock down. Police also closed several blocks in the vicinity of Ross St. and 48 Ave. to 47 Ave. At 12:30 p.m. police located and entered a residence of

Alberta reports first West Nile virus-related death since 2007 Ten human cases of West Nile virus infection were reported in Alberta this year, including one West Nile virus-related death in the south zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS).

“Sadly, as we’ve seen in Alberta this year, West Nile virus infection can cause severe illness and even death,” said Dr. Gerry Predy, senior medical officer of health.

Of the 10 human cases of

West Nile virus (WNv) infection reported in Alberta this season, seven cases were reported in south zone, including the single WNv-related death. The Calgary, central and north zones of AHS each reported one case.

As of Sept. 29th, the Public Health Agency of Canada had reported 386 clinical cases of WNv infection in Canada; 102 cases of WNv infection were reported in

Canada in 2011.

After being bitten by a mosquito carrying West Nile virus, humans can develop West Nile Non-Neurological Syndrome (formerly known as West Nile fever) and, occasionally, the more serious West Nile Neurological Syndrome.

Individuals who develop non-neurological syndrome may experience fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, skin rash,

swollen glands and headache. The small number of individuals who do develop neurological syndrome may experience tremors, drowsiness, confusion, swallowing problems, high fever, unconsciousness, paralysis and even death.

Although precautions that reduce risk of mosquito-borne illness, including West Nile virus, are not necessary during the winter months in Alberta,

West Nile virus was first isolated in 1937 in the West Nile district of Uganda.

Since then, there have been outbreaks in Egypt, Israel, South Africa and in parts of Europe, Asia and North America.

Officials say there are 44 species of mosquitoes in Alberta and that of these,

the Culex tarsalis has been identified as the species most likely to carry and transmit the virus from infected birds to people and horses. The breeding season of the Culex tarsalis runs from mid-June to September.

Call to visual artists A call for submissions encourages visual artists to get rooted in the arts. In celebration of Red Deer’s selection as host city for the 2013 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artists Awards, the City of Red Deer Culture Services and the Harris-Warke Gallery will host a juried art exhibition titled ‘Rooted in the Arts’ that will be on display in June 2013, at the same time as the awards.

The exhibition will celebrate visual arts and culture in Red Deer in conjunction with many other cultural events surrounding the Distinguished Artists Awards.

Artists residing in Red Deer and Red Deer County are encouraged to apply.

Artworks will be chosen by a community jury of professional artists based on artistic excellence and thematic relevance. All mediums will be considered except performance and video works.

The theme for the 2013 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards is ‘Rooted in the Arts’ and this theme will also drive the art exhibition. Interpretations may include the literal interpretation of being rooted, or more metaphoric meanings including ideas of being anchored, centered, grounded, founded, originated, established, settled and entrenched. The artwork may also relate to Red Deer’s geographic location, to Red Deer’s centennial, or any other relevant interpretation.

Salvation Army celebrates anniversary weekend

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express This past weekend, folks flocked to the local Salvation Army church and the Memorial Centre for major events to mark the ministry’s 100th anniversary in Red Deer.

Special events included a visit by Salvation Army national territorial leaders (Commissioners Brian and Rosalie Peddle) and a concert on Saturday evening featuring the Salvation Army’s Canadian staff band. There was also an anniversary dinner last Friday evening at the church.

Rounding out the weekend, a special Sunday morning worship service was held as well. The Peddles were featured guests along with Major Ron Millar, divisional commander.

Brian has served around the world in a number of capacities, most recently taking on leadership of the Canadian and Bermuda territory. “I was introduced to the Army in a small community in Newfoundland, and the journey just went from there. I think it was the excitement of the meetings, the worship, the youth activities and the places where I could just plug in and feel good about being there,” he explains of his attraction to the SA. Millar grew up in the Salvation Army; his parents being SA officers.

They served in a number of places, including Hong Kong. “My first memories of life are there,” he said. “I went there when I was two years old.” Other locations of ministry over the years have included Bermuda, Canada, Australia and in Jamaica.

Indeed, it’s a significant year for the Salvation Army – besides marking

the centennial of the ministry in Red Deer, 2012 is also the 100th anniversary of the death of founder William Booth and the 130th anniversary of the Army’s ministry in Canada. The first official meeting was held in Red Deer on July 6th, 1912.

The first Commanding Officer of the Red Deer Corp was Ensign Pearce, who was appointed on July 7th, 1912. A succession of officers have come and gone over the decades as the church continued to grow and new ministries were established.

“I’m fascinated by the theme that the local Salvation Army has adopted for the weekend – a continuation of service of ‘heart to God, hand to man’,” says Brian. “I think it’s wonderful to retain that focus – that’s our DNA. That’s what God has raised us up to be. And the way the corps has found it appropriate to represent that in this community is great.

There are wonderful expressions of ‘heart to God, hand to man’ that are very active on a day-to-day basis here. I think that’s what we are here to celebrate.”

Millar agrees.

“I want to celebrate the work, commitment and dedication – our ethos and the essence of who we are and who we have been. Although we have changed, and need to continually change our approach in delivery of service, our DNA has never changed. That’s what I want to celebrate – who we are and what we do.

The Salvation Army exists to share the love of Christ and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world.”

The very beginnings of the Salvation Army extends back to founder

William Booth’s vision of ministry in the povertystricken east end of London, England. Booth spent years as a Methodist minister throughout England, and eventually returned to London with his family.

He found himself burdened by the state of the masses.

London’s east end was known for excruciating poverty and alcoholism.

He formed ‘The Christian Mission’ which was changed in 1878 to the Salvation Army. By the time Booth died the Army was at work in 58 countries. Today, the Army is working in about 120 countries.

Studying the lives of those early pioneers – the Booths and the faithful helpers who worked alongside them in those days – is an inspiration in and of itself. That early dedication honed a trust in the Army that is alive and well today.

“Every three seconds of every day, somebody walks through the door of a Salvation Army looking for a word of encouragement or a response to a very practical need or a spiritual need,” said Brian.

“That makes a huge dent in the mass population of Canada. And if it isn’t the individual saying to me ‘You’ve helped me in the past’, they know someone the Salvation Army has helped. I think that’s why people keep giving because we keep telling stories of what happens when you treat people with dignity.”

Millar said the legacy of the Army also fuels the reputation the ministry enjoys today. “We are stewards of this wonderful trust

that the public has that has been built over several generations.

“I hope that when my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren look back on my generation, they will say that this generation managed that trust and confidence well.”

Known for her perceptive analysis of national affairs, Hébert started her career as a reporter for the regional television and radio newsroom of Radio-Canada in Toronto in 1975 before becoming a national reporter for Radio-Canada radio. On Parliament Hill, she served as correspondent for Radio-Canada as well as bureau chief for Le Devoir and La Presse.

She writes on national affairs for the Toronto Star and is a guest columnist for Le Devoir and L’Actualité. She is also a weekly participant on the political panel At Issue on CBC television’s The National.

Central Alberta Theatre’s second offering of the season is built on a simple premise, but steadily builds as a solid tale fueled by strong performances.

2 Across continues its run Oct. 18-21 in the Memorial Centre’s Nickle Studio.

Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. except for the Sunday performance, which begins at 6 p.m.

Featuring Deb O’Brien and Derek Olinek, the play takes place on a train leaving the San Francisco airport bound for the end of the line in East Bay. Interestingly, the show, which was written by Jerry Mayer, is timed to match the 85-minute journey. Seated across from one another are two strangers who have nothing in common save for a crossword puzzle.

At first, conversation is strained as Janet tries in vain to focus on her puzzle while Josh natters away about a range of topics.

But as time passes, Janet, who has a few heartaches of her own, lets her guard down ever so slightly and the charismatic and charming Josh brings a spark of joy to her world. Mayer’s script is really wellcrafted, it flows naturally and the conversations between the two feel authentic.

There are several humourous moments and some poignant ones as well, as both of the characters learn more about themselves while becoming more and more fa-

miliar with each other.

O’Brien is a delight to watch – she’s always strong, confident and convincing in any role she tackles. This time around is no different. We watch her move from being stuck in a lonely unhappiness to recapturing a luminous part of her personality she had perhaps left behind long ago.

Like O’Brien, Olinek is really a solid performer as well. He’s funny, expressive and consistently entertaining as he fleshes out his character’s spirited philosophies on life. Pacing is a problem here and there, and there are a few weak, meandering patches in the script. But ultimately, I can’t imagine the challenge for O’Brien and Olinek who are the only two onstage at all times and must not only keep conversation flowing but also have their emotions evolving as the story progresses. But they manage it just fine.

The folks at CAT got of to a bit of a rocky start this season with the bizarre and uneven Greater Tuna, but they’re getting closer to finding their strengths with a show such as 2 Across. Director Erna Soderberg has assembled a great cast and brought out a pleasant story of how a chance meeting can have far-reaching consequences.

ENTERTAINMENT Edmonton rockers to play the Far Side Rend brings their fired-up, powerhouse performance to City stage

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Described as an electrifying musical powerhouse, Edmontonbased Rend plays the Far Side Lounge at Red Deer College on Oct. 18.

Founded in 2010 by lead singer/ songwriter Carol-Lynne Quinn, these past two years have been a whirlwind journey and have allowed Rend to see tremendous success in the Canadian music scene. Rounding out the group are Jeff Quinn (bass), Steve Roe (electric guitar), Nick Lovejoy (drums) and Nate Glubish on piano/synth.

Members joined forces during their studies at Edmonton’s Grant MacEwan University. “Music was our homework,” explains Quinn during an interview from Toronto, where the band was attending Indie Week Canada last week. “But we also wanted to do something on the side that wasn’t judged and wasn’t considered homework.”

After they graduated, they found they had tapped into something unique. Gigs were requested around town and it was clear that Rend was carving out a niche for themselves.

“A couple more members joined us, and just within the last year and a half things really started to blow up.” They recorded their first disc No Lines only a few months after their first gig and immediately started receiving radio play.

They had recorded a project earlier, which Quinn said really opened their eyes to what they could do and the range of sonic possibilities that were there for the exploring.

Meanwhile, No Lines was about six months in the making and builds further on that edgy pop/ rock foundation. “The recording

Supported by Rawlco Radio through the 10K20 project, the band released No Lines early this year. Their latest single, the soaring Battlecry, was recently released to radio across Canada as well.

The band has been described as having a ‘dash of Metric, a scoop of Coldplay and a layer of Paramore’ all topped off with The Cranberries. ‘Listeners are treated to driving rhythms, Zeppelin-

worthy guitar solos, synth-pop hook lines and dynamic, soulful vocals.’

“Something we’ve learned is that it’s important to play your new songs live in concert as much as possible, and gauge the crowd’s reaction before you know which ones you’re actually going to record on an album.”

That said, they already have about half of the next CD’s tunes selected. Quinn said this coming winter will provide some time to really dive in and get the project crafted. She hopes to start recording next spring and perhaps release it later in the year. A few

singles will also likely hit the airwaves in the interim to keep fans satisfied while simultaneously building on the band’s momentum and growing popularity.

Quinn’s own passion for music surfaced early on. She didn’t take music lessons during her growing up years, but she had a desire to write her own songs while experimenting with various melodies on the piano. It was also during time at church and taking part in school musicals that she found her voice.

“I always wrote and sang my own songs, but the big change was when I went to Grant MacE-

wan and studied in the vocal program.” She absorbed everything she could about the science of singing, and clearly, the dedication and commitment of all the band’s members has paid off.

“Tonight is our third show in a row, plus we have some radio programs in the morning,” she said of the Indie event in Toronto, where bands from across the country get to play at a number of the city’s iconic venues.

“It’s a creative experience – we’ve never played in Toronto before. The music scene is very cool.”

Quinn adds that when the band does tunes by other artists, she doesn’t feel especially jittery. But when they do their own material, a bit of nerves can surface. It all works to fuel a powerful show.

“When I go up and I’m representing Rend, I’m definitely connect to it because it’s really close to my heart.”

These days, members of the band juggle their time between performing and working parttime jobs, and the dream is to be able, of course, to pursue their passion full-time and be able to make a living doing just that.

“We’re making a plan – step by step – to get there. And we understand it’s going to take months and years of hard work. But it’s funny, because we look back every six months and see how far we’ve come just from putting the effort into it.

“It’s not our desire to get famous - it’s our desire to do this as our career and make really good music.

“I was always totally passionate about music, and I think that everyone in the band was brought up being passionate about playing it, and understanding that it’s about putting a lot of time and effort into it.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Red Deer College’s season opener a delightful charmer

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express There’s plenty of magic, romance and fun packed into Red Deer College’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The Theatre Studies department’s rendition of the delightful Shakespeare classic runs tonight through Saturday evening in Studio A with curtain at 7:30 p.m. A matinee runs Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. as well.

‘Magic, mischief, mayhem and madness’ indeed abundantly surface when both humans and fairies are dosed with a love potion as this tale unfolds.

Director Jeff Page has done a fabulous job of staging the production, which is a clever, enchanting tangle of magically mismatched love that ultimately works out seamlessly in the end. Young lovers collide in the woods with feuding fairies and an inept group of craftsmen attempting to stage a play for the wedding of the Duke of Athens.

Believed to have been written between 1590 and 1596, the story portrays the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors, who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set.

The cast does a first-rate job as well, each capturing the full scale of meaning and emotions behind the sometimes difficultto-understand Shakespearean language.

Nathan Johnson (Theseus) and Kirsten Harper (Hippolyta) are outstanding in their key roles, and the quartet of lovers (Steven Pecksen as Demetrius; Brayden Scobie as Lysander; Nicole Leal as Hermia and Tiffany Carlson as Helena) are each terrific in their respective roles as well.

The situations amongst the four of them – influenced of course by mischievous and wonderfully-portrayed Puck (Kohl Littlechilds and Tessa Simpson) provide the best moments of play. Girl loves boy who couldn’t care less. Magic potion sweeps his indifference aside. Suddenly, the girl finds herself the object of affection of both men and assumes they are simply making fun of her.

Of course, there’s that set of ‘actors’ in the play who do their level but misguided best to stage a show of their own for the wedding. The play essentially wraps up on the hysterical antics they provide – a superb reminder of just how comical Shakespeare could be as he wove together his masterpieces. As the troupe, Brooke Dalton, Raegan Aleman, Glenndl Miguel, Daryn Tessier and Halee Pierog are overthe-top fantastic, and of course Dylan Hopkins as Bottom is a constant scene-stealer

Design-wise, the production draws inspiration from the sensibilities of the 1920s and it works extremely well.

An effective and atmospheric yet simple set, designed by Daniela Masellis, provides plenty of room for the actors and fairies to nail the ‘movement’ demands of the show as well. And the costumes, in the most capable hands of wardrobe coordinator Donna Jopp, are terrific all the way through, too.

Lighting designer Greg Stafford provides just the right touches and shades of light to add mood and feeling to what’s happening as well.

Much of the credit for the show’s success must ultimately go to Page. He’s obviously tapped into something here, providing a rich and infectious fascination with Shakespeare to the cast of second-year theatre students.

There is plenty of joy in this production, and it’s clear that his knack for fresh originality and bringing out the energies of such a talented group were evident from the play’s start to finish.

Roger Ebert has already picked Argo as this year’s Best Picture Oscar winner and he may be right. It’s a well-made movie that shows Americans in their best light, putting one over on the nasty Iranians; the sort of movie that will appeal to Oscar voters.

Back in 1979-80, when it took place, it was known

as the Canadian caper.

Iranian revolutionaries broke into the American embassy in Tehran, making most of the Americans there hostages for well over a year.

Six Americans escaped and were hidden for weeks in the home of Ken Taylor, then Canadian ambassador to Iran.

The movie shows how the six escaped Iran by posing as a Canadian film crew checking out locations for a fake Star Wars like movie called Argo, to be made there. Apparently this unlikely story is true, even allowing for movie hype. Ben Affleck, who also directed, plays the real-life CIA agent who leads the six Americans to safety.

wood while using every Hollywood trick in the book to heighten the tension as the escapees go to the airport and try to leave the country. John Goodman and Alan Arkin have a lot of fun helping Affleck set up the fake movie. Victor Garber plays Ken Taylor, who has said the film doesn’t fairly show Canada’s involvement in the escape. The ending is a little ragged, but it’s an exciting and tense thriller.

LIFESTYLE Is eight glasses of water enough?

Water is the elixir of life. We have heard it and yes, it is 100% correct. A significant part of your body is made up of water. In addition to a large part of your body being made up of water, several daily body functions use water.

Don’t think water deserves so much credit? Consider these facts.

WHEELER • In a day, your lungs expel about two to four cups of water just through normal breathing (even more on a cold day).

• You can lose up to a cup of water if your feet sweat.

• In just six trips to the bathroom a day, you can lose about six cups of water.

• Your body can expel about two cups of water a day if you perspire (and that doesn’t include exercise-induced sweat).

For these reasons and many more, it’s obvious that you need to replenish your body with liquids regularly.

Okay, so if your body is losing all of this water every day, what do you have to do to replenish it? The best thing you can do is drink a little bit of water all day long. Try sipping down about four ounces of water every hour when you’re awake (a small glass). Take a water bottle with you when you’re driving, grab a glass of water before you sit down in front of the television, and bring something to drink when you go to that long meeting during your workday. If you don’t like the taste of water, try drinking ice-cold water or twist a lemon or lime in your water.

Now that you know how to get the water your body needs, let’s talk about how much water your body needs.

Many experts say that drinking between eight and 10 glasses of water a day is a good rule of thumb. However,

other factors, such as your body size, your body type (muscle holds more water than fat), your activity level, your age, and your diet, all play into the amount of water your body needs.

If you have any questions about how much water your body needs or if you experience any symptoms of dehydration, touch base with your physician.

Regardless, it’s probably safe to say that you are not drinking enough water.

Dehydration is one of the most common ways your body lets you know it’s not getting enough water. When dehydration occurs, your body has lost more fluids than it has taken in. This condition is not often life threatening, but it can have serious consequences in babies and older adults. Symptoms of dehydration include feeling dizzy or lightheaded, having a dry or sticky feeling in your mouth, or producing less urine. If you experience any of these symptoms, take a moment to rest and get a drink. It’s also a good idea to get out of the sun and relax for the rest of the day. If symptoms continue, contact your physician.

Can drinking more water really help you lose weight? Yup, sure can. See, our bodies are a heck of a lot smarter than we give it credit for. When you are low on water, your body will hold on to the water reserves it has for dear life.

That will make you retain water more and more, the less your drink. This will create that bloating feeling and your weight will rise. So drink up and your body will trust you again, it will start to expel water more. You will bloat less, you will get rid of more toxins and look better (win, win, win).

Here’s the bottom line -- your body needs water and it needs it every day, so try to keep a water bottle close by and refill it often. Your body will thank you for it.

Some local ‘celebrities’ will get the chance to compete and raise funds for a good cause this coming spring.

The second annual Celebrity Dance-Off will be held March 15th at the Sheraton Hotel.

Eight ‘celebrity’ dancers who will compete for the Trophy Ball were named on Sunday and excitement is already building for the fundraising event.

Gloria Beck, owner of Parkland Nurseries will dance with Dale Tosczak, Tera Lee, KG Country Morning co-host is partnered with Brett Speight, Lyn Radford is paired with Andrew Opyrchal and City Councillor Tara Veer is partnered with Dean Stroeder. Other contestants include Terry Loewen, owner of Platinum Homes who will dance with Natalie Brooks, Gordon Mathers, funeral director and owner of Parkland Funeral Homes is paired with Jody Liptak, Jim McPherson, the 2012 Rotary Citizen of the Year will dance with Jinelle Marshall and Dusty Smith, realtor with the Sutton Group is partnered

with Amanda Fleet.

The Red Deer Hospice has been hosting an annual gala for the past 12 years, but changed formats to include the dance-off last year. “Each dancer is challenged to go out and raise $10,000 on behalf of Hospice. Last year the dancers went above and beyond and raised much more than we anticipated, so that was awesome. We’re hoping we’ll have a sell-out event and we have over 800 seats available,� said Marian Cloutier, fund development and marketing coordinator.

The fundraising event will include a cocktail hour, dinner and the dance competition to follow. “We have three judges – the format is very similar to Dancing with the Stars. There is an opportunity for all of the people to vote for their favourite dancer. The judges have about a 25 per cent say who the winners are and the audience has a 75 per cent say.�

Last year’s event raised $180,000 and this year Cloutier said the goal is to raise about $225,000. “That money goes to the day-today operations at the Hospice. It is basically our groceries, heating the

Eating fat to lose fat Eat less fat and lose weight - that’s the advice we have been following for the past 30 years; however, statistics show that we are fatter than ever. Consider these findings: From 1960 to 2000, the prevalence of overweight people increased from 31.5 to 33.6% in U.S. adults.

CHRISITE In the same time period, the prevalence of obesity more than doubled from 13.3 to 30.9% in U.S. adults, with most of the rise occurring in the past 20 years.

Our fascination with low fat diets has caused us to gain rather than lose weight. What went wrong?

For the past 30 years, we have been following recommendations that a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet will help us lose weight and fight diseases such as heart disease and cancer. The government’s food pyramids and food guides are the official low-fat, highcarbohydrate diet plan, emphasizing the consumption of carbohydrates such as bread, cereal, rice and pasta, and de-emphasizing the consumption of fats and oils. However, with obesity rates soaring, the food guide is now under review and new research even suggests that following the food guide may promote rather than prevent diseases such as heart disease.

Problem number one: People ate too many calories. Statistics gathered since the 1970s show that with the emergence of lowfat, high-carbohydrate diets, we began consuming more calories. The low-fat products were made by replacing the fat with sugar, thereby making them high-

Problem number two: People ate too many refined carbohydrates. With the obsession of cutting fat came an over-consumption of carbohydrates; after all, carbohydrates are virtually fat free. However, most people ignored the effect carbohydrates can have on blood sugar and insulin levels and on weight. After you eat carbohydrates, they are broken down into sugar and move into the bloodstream. Your body then secretes the hormone insulin to lower blood sugar to normal levels. If too many carbohydrates are consumed, especially the wrong types of carbohydrates, our bodies will over-secrete insulin. And, excess insulin gets stored as fat. Carbohydrates that get absorbed into the blood stream also lead to surges of insulin, low blood sugars and increased hunger, which makes us crave and eat more. Eating fewer carbohydrates and more protein and fat appears to help people shed pounds successfully.

The glycemic index is a tool based on the idea that the longer it takes for carbohydrates to be digested, the less the impact on blood sugar and insulin levels.

Foods that are high on the glycemic index are simple and refined carbohydrates such as white flour, white bread and pasta, pop, candy and sweets. Ironically, these are all the foods that we would tend to eat on a low-fat diet plan. Alternatively, foods that are low on the glycemic index are those that contain fiber such as fruits, vegetables, legumes and some whole grains such as kamut and spelt. Fiber slows digestion, causing a slower rise in blood sugar and less insulin secretion, helping with weight loss.

with your foods helps to create a more even blood sugar and insulin balance, aiding with weight loss.

The good fats include fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, fish oils, nuts, seeds, omega-3 eggs, olives, olive oil and avocado. The bad fats include marbled red meats, fullfat dairy products and hydrogenated vegetable oils.

Healthy fats should make up about 30% of your total caloric intake. Adding omega-3 to a daily supplement protocol will aid in additional fat-burning.

Enjoy lean proteins: Protein slows digestion, lowers the glycemic index and helps keep blood sugar and insulin levels on an even keel. Good sources of protein include fish, poultry, turkey, soy, tofu, low-fat dairy products, lean meats and egg whites. Poorer protein choices include fatty red meat, hamburgers, ribs, pork and full-fat dairy products. Lean proteins should make up about 30 to 40% of your total caloric intake.

What you eat is only half the equation when it comes to battling the bulge - the other half is physical activity. Both cardiovascular exercise and weight training help boost your metabolism and keep weight off.

Despite the need for more long-term studies comparing the low-fat diet with a diet that emphasizes lower carbohydrates and good fats, there is substantial evidence to support the notion that we need to eat fat to lose fat. Cutting refined starches and sugars and eating more vegetables, fruit, lean proteins and healthy fats - will help you to lose weight and feel better and may reduce your risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

What you should know about toilet seats and pigs Was mother right when she advised to never sit on a public toilet seat? Vancouver believed it had solved this ‘pottie’ fear by installing automated toilets. But they proved we still need to teach humans to behave as well as pigs.

JONES “How well do you know Toronto,” I once asked a newcomer to the city. “Well,” she replied, “I now know the location of the pubic toilets.” This topic will not win the Noble Prize in Medicine, but it’s vital knowledge if you suffer from urinary or bowel problems.

Vancouver believed it had solved pottie paranoia by installing hi-tech potties.

Touch a button and the door slides open, followed by voice instructions. Then, after each use, the facility is automatically cleaned and disinfected. In 2011 they were used by 177,000 people, but vandalized 856 times. Homo sapiens also flush blue jeans, sweaters and t-shirts down the toilet. Such human behaviour may force the city to close these facilities.

A farmer friend of mine is right. Pigs are cleaner than some humans, smart, make good pets, and never foul their environment. Sure, pigs roll in mud, but that’s to get rid of bacteria and funguses.

But is it reasonable to be pottie para-

noid? If you have this worry you’re not alone. One survey showed that 30% of people ‘hold it’ rather than use a public toilet.

Forty per cent flush the toilet with their feet and 60% hover over it.

Good sense obviously tells us that toilet seats are hardly the most hygienic areas.

Moreover, scientific studies back up this concern. For instance, one report showed that 97% of seats harbour bacteria that cause boils, 81% harbour germs that cause diphtheria and hepatitis, 39% have bacteria that cause sore throats and 19% are infected with staphlococcus and salmonella bacteria associated with food poisoning.

But can toilet seats transmit venereal disease? It’s estimated that 20 million North Americans have genital herpes.

For years it’s been believed that the virus could only be picked up by sexual contact.

But then Dr. Trudy Larsen, a researcher at the University of California, startled the scientific world. Her discovery will also not win the Noble Prize, but her simple experiment put to rest a common misconception.

Larsen took samples from genital herpes lesions and placed them on a toilet seat. She also asked a patient with an open active lesion to sit on the seat for a few seconds. Later that year, at a scientific meeting, she informed doctors that the herpes virus survived for at least four hours on the toilet seat.

To further prove her point Dr. Larsen took samples of the virus from 10 patients with active lesions. She then infected rubber gloves, instruments and dry gauze with the virus. They were all left in the open air

and examined hours later.

The results were shocking. It was formerly believed that the virus died quickly when exposed to room air. But the live herpes virus could be cultivated from rubber gloves after an hour, on instruments after 18 hours and 72 hours later from dry gauze.

Another study at McGill University revealed that the Human Papilloma virus has been detected on toilet seats. This is the virus that causes genital warts and is also present in 90% of cervical cancer patients.

McGill researchers proved that an infected bottom isn’t the only way to infect seats. By placing dye in the toilet, and then flushing it, they found dye sprayed all over the seat. What goes in the bowl comes out

of the bowl.

Another study showed that if men are standing at a urinal next to each other the spray can travel three feet. That’s also food for thought.

So Mother was right about the pottie.

And one woman passed along this practical advice. She said, “With pantyhose at my knees I hover over the toilet, clutching my purse with my teeth, on high heels.”

Cirque Soleil would be proud of her.

Now if we could only teach humans to behave like pigs.

Red Deer Rebels shake up their roster

BY JIM CLAGGETT Red Deer Express I’m not sure if Brent Sutter is a fan of Canadian rockers Trooper but he inadvertently seems to have followed a line from one of their songs with regard to shaking things up when it comes to the Red Deer Rebels lineup.

The lyric in question goes like this, “If you don’t like what you’ve got, why don’t you change it?” The ball is in your court Mr. Sutter.

“I’ve got a plan in place and I’m going to follow through on it,” said the owner and G.M. of the Rebels when asked about the moves he’s made change the face of the team.

In no particular order he has picked up 20-year-old defenceman Brandon Underwood and forwards Matt Bellerive, Christian Stockl, Wyatt Johnson and Austin Ferguson.

He wasn’t done working the phones so he sent captain Adam Kambeitz to Saskatoon and in the process promoted 20-year-old Turner Elson as the new leader.

All of this has taken place over a short period of time.

“There’s a couple of things at the start of the season I felt we needed to improve on and those are the things I’m working on here right now,” said Sutter.

As far as the move with Elson is concerned, the change for him was bittersweet in becoming captain as it came with a price tag of losing a team mate and friend in Kambeitz.

“He was one of my best friends, great player, a great leader and I’m just going to try and pick up where he left off,” said Elson.

“It’s a good responsibility. It makes you better as a leader, as a person, so it’s a good thing to have right now and I’m going to enjoy it and work with it.”

The view through the eyes of other players was somewhat similar to what Elson was feeling

after the news was delivered the “I’m so happy for him. It’s a great opportunity,” said Mathew Dumba, of Kambeitz moving to the Blades who will host the CHL championship this year.

In addition to the trade with Saskatoon and the other moves which garnered the above mentioned players Sutter got back some draft picks as well.

He also sent local product Scott Feser to Camrose of the AJHL and defenceman Stephen Hak to Steinbach of the Manitoba junior league so it’s very clear to the remaining players that nobody is

immune. “There’s decisions that have to be made.

“I can’t get attached personally with me. I have to be able to separate that and make sure whatever decision I make is the right decision for the organization,” said Sutter.

College golfers heading to nationals

BY JIM CLAGGETT Red Deer Express Any golf in October in this province is always a bonus and for two Red Deer College golfers the continuation of their season is even more special even if they have to go out of town.

Melissa Koster and Rochelle French are headed to Ontario as representatives of the RDC golf team at the national championship after both managed to shoot their career best rounds on the way to a third place finish at provincials.

“I shot 94 on the first day and I was actually really shocked,” said Koster, who found it hard to break the century mark at the start of the season.

“It was really sweet to know that I have

For French, her best score posted was 112 and she was quite pleased with the result.

“Compared to my first tournament I shot 30 strokes better so it’s definitely a personal improvement,” said French.

Both players credit their coaches, Scott Bergdahl and Fred Cardwell for the better scores and a boost in confidence as they head towards the national championship event.

Bergdahl, the head professional at Lakewood Golf Resort says any pressure on these girls at nationals is going to be there only if they put it there themselves as most golfers are their own worst enemies when it comes to the mental aspect of the game.

One thing the two have going in their favour is their friendship and the support they’ll be able to offer each other during the tournament.

“I’m really excited Rochelle is coming with me and we get along really well,” said Koster. “It’s been great getting to know her this year and playing with her.”

French feels the same way and said having Koster there is one of the best benefits in her mind.

A trend that’s being seen in home buying Over the past few months a new trend has seem to have emerged.

Many trades-people have been pouring in applying for mortgages; however, many of them are now subcontracting as opposed to working for said employer.

TURCOTTE What does this mean exactly and what does it take for them to buy a home?

Firstly, this now means that this client is self-employed and responsible for his/her own income taxes, workers’ compensation and benefits. As attractive as the extra income is to you, as they’ll likely pay a few more dollars an hour, it also means that you will have extra costs as you are now running a business and have now taken on more responsibilities and liabilities.

Self-employment is like ‘Jekyl and Hyde’, on one side you can make a lot more money and have more freedoms but on the other side is a level of risk and responsibility you may not be prepared for as lenders aren’t too fond of the self-employed these days, and

rightfully so. We are in the highest category for mortgage delinquency and defaults, meaning we are the most likely to not pay for a mortgage. Mortgage delinquency for the newly self-employed (one to four years) individuals is three to five times higher than any employed individual.

The mortgage insurer rules for the self-employed have changed dramatically over the past few years and it’s difficult to keep up as each lender has their own criteria for qualifying as well. There too many rules to list but I can cut them down to a couple simple rules (and there are exceptions to these) to start. They want to see a minimum of two years of selfemployment with two years of financial statements completed and up-to-date personal taxes with great credit and depending on your debts, you’ll need be between 5 and 10% down payment from your own saved up funds.

The lenders and mortgage insurers need to see that you are capable of paying your own taxes in a timely manner and are able to responsibly manage your income and debts. For example, if you are a journeyman welder with two years of self-employment and have all of your taxes up to date along with paying yourself a good wage from your earnings then all

should be ok. However, if you deviate from one of the above, let’s that you have great credit, but haven’t done your taxes in two years and even have 10 – 20%for a down payment, you won’t likely be able to buy a home until your accountant has completed and filed all of your paperwork and you’ve paid all of your taxes.

As of late, I’ve had many applying to buy homes that are quite outside the box of being able to qualify, but many don’t seem to fully understand what they are getting themselves into with regards to self-employment.

Contractors would prefer to hire sub-contractors for a few different reasons; the following are the main ones: less administration, less source deductions (you pay your own taxes), no workers compensation, no benefits and also less labour laws to deal with.

So before you leap into sub-contracting ensure you understand everything you are getting yourself into.

So do the benefits outweigh the risk? Of course they can, but one has to look hard into the mirror and ask themselves the hard question: Am I organized enough to handle all of the aspects of being self-employed? Is now the right time? Should I get more established before delving deeply

into this? Do I have enough saved up to live without working for three to six months?

Being self-employed can be very rewarding, but I’ve also seen many disasters happen because of it. The best advice I can provide is preparedness. Do the research so that you know you are getting into the right situation for you and your family and lastly,

expect to put some things on hold for the first couple of years until you have a couple of tax seasons behind you.

Easy décor updates Is your bedroom a little ‘blah’ or den lacking ‘dazzle’? Add a pop of exciting colour to your decor with the help of spray paint.

Here are some ideas from Krylon, a leader in this field.

Charlie Brown would be in style this year, as the chevron design is gaining in popularity.

Take inventory of your room and determine what items – perhaps a lamp shade, table or wall shelves – could enjoy a bit of flair with new colours and design.

Once you’ve determined your pieces, all you’ll need is Krylon® Primer and Indoor/Outdoor Spray Paint in your favourite colours, masking tape, a ruler, craft scissors and masking paper.

Before getting started, be sure to thoroughly clean all surfaces. If possible, separate parts that won’t be painted (i.e. remove lamp shade from base). Next, spray all surfaces to be painted with primer and allow time to dry.

Once dry, spray all sur-

faces with the dominant colour repeating coats until the desired coverage is achieved, and allow to dry.

Now for the design fun: With a ruler and pencil draw a chevron-shaped pattern onto masking paper.

Cut out the bottom edge of the chevron with craft scissors. This will be used as a template to aid in placement of masking tape on projects.

Using the template, mask off the areas that will remain the dominant color, leaving the new chevron pattern area open.

Next, spray the open areas with primer. Once dry, spray with several light coats of a chosen accent colour until the desired coverage is achieved.

When dry, remove all masking paper and tape.

Soon, your blah or boring furniture pieces will look beautiful and new and sure to dazzle your guests.
