TRANSPORTATION FUNDING
Stanhope supports rail Regional district chair says lifespan of roads would increase NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com
Joe Stanhope says regional districts should help fund the rehabilitation of the Vancouver Island Railway. The comments from the chair of the Regional District of Nanaimo came in light of a request from the Island Corridor Foundation for $3.2 million to get the rail line up and running again. “I think we should do it, he said. “Southern Rail is still hanging in there and they fixed up the rail transfer station on the other side, in Vancouver. They’re going to put in $70 million over the next 20 years, so if we can get over this hurdle, I think it’s worth it. The tab for RDN residents would work out to .43 cents per $100,000 of home value, about $1.50 a year from the average house for five years. Stanhope said there is more to think about than the cost of the upgrade. “Propane trucks are on the road and they’ve been one of the big backers all the way along, he said. “They want to transfer propane onto the rails. Look at the damage to the road. If you start hauling coal over the Alberni Highway, just think about the damage those big trucks will make. It’s a case of pay me now, or pay me later. “I think it’s worth it.

It’s a chance for the public to see the details of a plan that will play a role in changing the look of city’s southern gateway. The proponents behind a proposed official community plan amendment that would allow a new Quality Foods on the south side of Parksville adjacent to the new health centre, are holding an open house at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23.
