A flagger who witnessed coworker Don Cain get hit by a car in Mission in July 2010 and dragged to his death sobbed in court Monday as she told Judge Jill Rounthwaite how the incident had affected her. Ingrid Ayana, in giving her victim impact statement during the sentencing hearing for driver Thor Shay of Mission, said she can’t sleep, has panic attacks, and can’t get images of the crash out of her mind. She said she had switched places with Cain only six minutes before he was struck, and she blames herself for his CAIN death. Crying could be hear throughout the packed courtroom during her statement. The judge wiped away her own tears before stepping down from her bench to hug and comfort Ayana. Rounthwaite sentenced Shay, 59, to a $1,500 fine and a one-year driving ban for a charge of driving without due care and attention. Shay was scheduled to begin trial on Monday in Abbotsford provincial court, but entered a surprise guilty plea. The judge acknowledged to family members in attendance that the sentence was “laughable in comparison to

But Cain’s sister, Sherry Isenor, read from a WorkSafeBC report during her victim impact statement, indicating that an investigator from the agency had travelled the same route, at the same time of day in similar weather conditions within a week of the crash, and reported the sun was not an issue, Isenor said. She also read a portion of the report that stated Shay’s windshield had been cracked and dirty at the time of the incident. Isenor was joined in the courtroom by sister Debbie Cain, herself a flagger; mom Irene Cain; and several members of the B.C. Flagging Association. Cain’s two sons, ages 19 and 20, were too traumatized to be there, Isenor said. Association co-founder Tammy Sampson stood up in court to suggest the laws need to be changed for drivers who kill or injure flaggers. “I think a $1,500 fine is too minimal. It sets a poor example for B.C. drivers who drive through our construction zones on a daily basis,” she told the judge. Outside of court, the family said the laws need to be stronger. “A $1,500 fine is ridiculous … He should at least be doing some jail time to prove the fact that you can’t be out there killing people. “It’s just that simple,” Isenor said.
Budget debate begins – city eyes .5 to 2% hike Staff report cites increases for police, firefighters and possible capital funds

A municipal tax increase ranging from a half to two per cent was scheduled to be debated at council yesterday afternoon. A staff report indicates a base tax increase of 0.52 per cent (0.42 for police and 0.10 for city operations) is possible, depending on what council wants to accomplish in the coming year. New financial requests for 2013 total approximately $614,000, or an additional tax increase of 0.54 per cent. Those requests include rural upland drainage ($300,000), a full-time special events co-ordinator position ($100,000), a finance payroll manager ($113,000) and five new firefighters ($110,000). The cost of the firefighters would be only $110,000 this year because the hirings would take place later
in the year, and mitigate much of the overtime costs currently paid. However, if approved, the city is committing to a total of 20 new firefighters – five each year over the next four years – for a total annualized cost of approximately $1.6 million. Staff have also presented the option of adding a one per cent increase for a capital levy for future projects, bringing the possible hike to just over two per cent. Significant budget items coming up in the next four years include a proposed YMCA facility which would open in 2016, a new police headquarters in 2017 and improvements to fire halls #4, #6 and #9. “At this point, this is just information,” said Pat Soanes, the city’s general manager of finance and corporate services.

“Looking at the general state of our capital and the infrastructure requirements going forward, we feel, at staff level, that it’s the right thing to do to raise the discussion again around the capital levy.” In 2010 and 2011, the city put one per cent towards capital funds, but last year it was removed from the budget. A one per cent tax increase is equivalent to $1.13 million in city revenue. The average homeowner (based on a house value of $400,000) would see a $19 tax increase for every one per cent rise. The average business or commercial property (again valued at $400,000) would see taxes rise $49 per percentage point increase. Council is expected to debate the budget over the next six weeks before finalizing the 2013 financial plan.

It was a soggy affair, but more than 150 motorcyclists delivered toys for kids in need during the Fraser Valley Toy Run on Sunday. The annual event, which collects items for Christmas bureaus in the Fraser Valley, left from meeting points in Mission and Chiliwack. Riders then converged at the Fraser Valley Auto Mall in Abbotsford and travelled from there to the Ag-Rec Building. Donations collected from the event will be distributed in Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Hope and Agassiz this Christmas.
The members of Abbotsford’s Ledgeview Golf Course have decided not to give up control of the facility to the city. Pat Differ, president of the Ledgeview Golf Society, said a meeting was held on Oct. 9 and members were asked “Do you support the society surrendering the lease to the city?” A 75 per cent majority vote was needed to approve the move, but a group calling itself the “continuation committee” helped convince members to vote no. “They gave a presentation saying they represent a group that desires to continue,” said Differ. The presentation made several recommendations that Differ would not elaborate on. “Basically there is a board meeting tomorrow morning (Tuesday) and the continuation committee is going to be present and they are going to lay out their plans for the next little while at Ledgeview,” said Differ. Differ did say a leadership change is likely. “What I think might happen is, as a board, we might just pass the torch to them and they’ll be taking over from this point on.” Ledgeview has been facing financial difficulty. In January, the society asked council for $250,000 in financial support. It was the first time the group had approached the city for help. After running the course successfully for the past 30 years, the club lost $112,000 in 2010, $240,000 in 2011 and was expecting to lose $150,000 this year. In May, the city granted Ledgeview a onetime support of $115,000, including $65,000 in rent forgiveness and $50,000 toward capital improvements.

Mayor backs YMCA plan

Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman is throwing his support behind a proposed YMCA construction project that would cost the city approximately $17.5 million. The project, which was first proposed in 2010, was originally slated to cost $30 million, with the city providing half of the funding. The price tag is now expected to be about $35 million. “I am in support of it. What the city has to do is find a way to get our share,” said Banman, who noted he was speaking for himself, and not on behalf of council. No agreement or decision has yet been reached. I owe it to the taxpayers to find a way to try and make this work if that’s what they wish,” said Banman. City manager Frank Pizzuto said staff will have to demonstrate to council how the funding can be put into the five-year capital plan. He said it’s difficult to get an exact figure, because the project is still in such an early stage. “I think if we say that our contribution is $17.5 million, then we’ll say we have to do it within that, whatever it takes,” said Pizzuto. The new building is expected to be approximately 60,000 square feet, with a pool, multipurpose gymnasiums and child care services. Council is scheduled to debate the 2013 budget during the next six weeks.

City faces fiscal realities Mayor Bruce Banman says he supports the concept of a YMCA facility in Abbotsford. In principle, the idea certainly has merit. Another pool, and more recreational opportunities would be worthwhile investments for the future, particularly considering the YMCA is proposing a funding partnership. Such an agreement would see the estimated $35-million price tag split between that organization and the city, with the YMCA taking responsibility for operating costs. Under different circumstances, this should be a slam-dunk for Abbotsford. However, due to decisions in recent years, this city finds itself with shallow capital reserve funds, and heavily committed to some major red-ink undertakings – namely the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, and the AHL
hockey team that calls it home. Those two entities cost taxpayers about $3 million annually, with not much relief on the horizon. In addition to that is just over $5 million in payments on the $85 million borrowed to build the AESC. Civic taxes climbed considerably to undertake that project, and they’ve continued to rise since. As important, if not more so, is the fact that Abbotsford also faces major capital projects in upcoming years, including a new water source and sewer treatment expansion and upgrading, both with huge price tags and potentially further tax increases. Mayor Banman says he’ll listen to input from his constituents on the YMCA proposal. We expect many taxpayers will urge city decisions to reflect fiscal realities, and that would be wise counsel indeed.

Other Hand Saturday afternoon a text message, with photo attached, bonged into my cell phone: “The bridge is open!” The bridge, of course, is the new Port Mann. Family was crossing in one of the three east-bound lanes that have just been opened to traffic. While the picture attached to my Saturday message was interesting, it didn’t quite capture the true immensity of the structure, which is best viewed from an aerial photograph. And I just happened, when they arrived, to have such a pic from a recently acquired book detailing the history of trucking in British Columbia. In the book is a photo taken in 2011 that, while the new span is only partially complete, provides a graphic display of its enormity, truly dwarfing the existing bridge which, in its open-
ing days, was a marvel of construction. I remember my first crossing of that span in 1964, only a few months after it was officially opened, on my way to a construction job in Chilliwack. It was winter, and I recall the big hill on the east side being a challenge in the snow – the old 1954 panel delivery truck slipping and sliding as it crawled up the slope. It was an adventure that added to the excitement of my first crossing of the bridge, with its huge candle-sticklike monuments at each end. Not only did the Port Mann and its attendant freeway speed traffic to the valley, it was the impetus for the huge growth that now surrounds us. Surrey in those days was little more than the farming community of Cloverdale, and Chilliwack was the largest town in the central Valley. With the bridge came easy access to cheaper housing than in Vancouver’s suburbs, and commuterism was born as valley communities sprang up. Then, with growth and investment over the years, the trend slowly began to change, and today there are as many people commuting east as there
are those who still drive to work in Vancouver’s environs. There are those who decry the new bridge, arguing that it will only lead to more congestion and more cars on the road.

I don’t disagree with that because, like the bridge being replaced, it may over the next 50 years end up being as clogged. However, with the manner in which technology has progressed over the past half-century, we could be relying on other forms of transportation by then. In the meantime, cars and trucks will continue to reign as the only way to move people and goods like gro-
ceries and consumables beyond the confines of Metro Vancouver’s transit system. And for the foreseeable future, I’m convinced that transport trucks will continue to be the suppliers of all the products we need, and that alone makes the new Port Mann and its 10 lanes of traffic a valuable and necessary addition to our transportation system. There are those who whine, of course, about the tolls that will be placed upon it. However, when you look back in B.C.’s history, many of our major projects have been tolled: the Fraser Canyon highway when it was first opened in the late 1920s, the Lions Gate Bridge, the Second Narrows, the Deas Island (now Massey) tunnel, and the Coquihalla. Nobody likes to spend more money, but the tolls do help allay the cost, and obviously with the examples noted above, they don’t last forever. And even at $3 a trip, it’s an incredible bargain compared to taking a ferry to Vancouver Island.

Reconsider Anavets decision
I was very disappointed to read in The News that the Army, Navy, and Airforce Veterans’ A s s o c i a t i o n (Anavets), was turned down for a property tax break of $3,300. To my thinking, this group falls into two categories of “not for profit” and “service club.” The staff recommendation was to approve the Anavets request, since it is a group similar to the Abbotsford Legion, which is approved. Anavets gives support to veterans, their families, and their offspring.
Perhaps councilors Braun, Dave Loewen, Bill MacGregor, Simon Gibson and Moe Gill, who voted against Anavets, forget that the veterans submitted

Colette said the trust fund was suggested to her daughter by friends from the community and their church who were concerned that she might need some financial support. “Liz was quite surprised and touched by this request,” she said. Squires decided that the trust fund money should be placed into an RESP for the children’s education, since she is currently not able to save for that herself. Cutting back red tape for business New inter-municipal business licence project moves ahead
The Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce believes that a recent city decision will enable economic growth in the region by reducing red tape and expenses for business. At its last meeting, council approved a recommendation to participate in a pilot project that would see the implementation of an intermunicipal business licence. Mobile businesses such as contractors, caterers and service providers will now be able to purchase one licence that will allow them to conduct business in municipalities
from Surrey to Hope. Patrick Giesbrecht, president of the Abbotsford Chamber appeared as a delegation before council and presented the idea in February. This was part of a co-ordinated presentation to respective councils by the chambers of Greater Langley, Mission, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Chilliwack. After the initial presentation, Allan Asaph, executive director of the chamber explained how the mobile licence works. “The way it works right now, if you are from Abbotsford and

complicated. Asaph said under the new program, a business based in Abbotsford would take out an Abbotsford licence and a secondary mobile licence that allowed them to work in the other areas that agree to the program. The same
would apply for other communities. A similar motion has been passed in five of the participating municipalities and is expected to pass in the remaining three in the next week or so. The pilot project is scheduled to start Jan. 1.

Weathering crisis with meditation technique Julie Loland will have little time to celebrate her graduation from Simon Fraser University this semester with a master of education in education practice. The Alberta-born Abbotsford resident has three young sons, including a newborn, to contend with. She’s also dealing with a second round of chemotherapy to treat the aggressive form of breast cancer she was diagnosed with last February, which had metastasized to her lymph nodes while she was still pregnant. A teacher at Terry Fox elementary in Abbotsford, Loland credits mindfulness meditation with helping her weather the crisis. The technique focuses the mind on the present and avoids dwelling on the past or anticipating the future. Loland discovered she had cancer while

investigating how mindfulness meditation, the subject of her thesis and graduate capstone project, could help her Grade 5 students overcome emotional and social challenges and improve their work. Suddenly, her research became very personal. “Mindfulness research and practice
within my classroom has opened me up to engaging in relaxation,” Loland said. For her capstone project, Loland analyzed whether calming the amygdala – a set of neurons in the brain that affect the fight-or-flight response to stress – would foster better decision-making. Capstone projects
are based on studentfaculty collaboration, culminating in integrated learning and knowledge, accomplishments in a field, and/or new solutions to real world problems. Loland had her students engage in meditation exercises including deep breathing, isolating and heightening activation of different senses and learning to empathize with different perspectives on issues. Within three months, students
not only became less aggressive, happier and more focused on their work but they also improved their memory, concentration and listening skills. Loland’s work with her students “had a profound impact on their lives, enabling them to better cope with bullying, conflict, emotional is-

sues, self-doubt and more extreme issues such as parents’ death and illness,” said her capstone supervisor Cher Hill. As for her own stress, said Loland, “I am learning to embrace this full catastrophe and allow the storms of life to strengthen me as I learn to live, grow and heal.”

Freestyle dancers cast in Nutcracker Earlier this year, six students from Abbotsford’s Freestyle Dance Centre attended an audition for the upcoming performance of the Nutcracker by the prestigious Goh Academy of Ballet in Vancouver. Julia Kennedy, Emily Koopmans, Isaac Speilman, Mackenzie Penner, Carly Penner and Alexia Borseth were among the students cast in the production. In a continued effort to encourage higher rates of recovery, BCUOMA has built a strong support network across the province. Today, participation includes 209 brand-owner members, 39 collectors and processors, 520+ return collection facilities and more than 4,000 generators. In addition, BCUOMA is reprising its successful ambassador program this summer – with two ambassadors touring the province to educate and raise awareness of the importance of used oil and antifreeze recycling.
Although it’s commonly accepted that oil and antifreeze are not household garbage we can simply throw out, more than one million litres of used oil ends up in BC landfills every year. When you consider that it only takes one drop of oil to contaminate a million drops of water, the problem is clear: there’s just too many drops to count, too many to ignore. BCUOMA is a non-for-profit organization that encourages British Columbians to responsibly recycle used oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers. Since the launch of the program in 2003, British Columbians have done an exceptional job of recycling their used oil materials.
Protecting our province from the harmful effects of used oil and antifreeze must be a responsibility we all share, together. So please, next time you look to dispose of used oil or antifreeze materials, find a collection facility near you. Here are three easy ways to do so:

Fiddling siblings give speech Abbotsford siblings Kai and Lia Gronberg are among the speakers at a Telus World of Science event on Oct. 20. The musical duo, who perform as the Fiddlin’ Frenzy, will discuss the benefits of music and how it can inspire kids both locally and globally, as part of the TedxKids@BC event at Science World in Vancouver. They will also talk about overcoming fear on stage and how one should never give up on his or her dreams and passions. The fiddling and clogging pair performed at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, and were featured in one of the many Olympic commercials. Kai and Lia started performing at the age of five and have composed since they were seven. They play Celtic, Metis, French Canadian and traditional music. They have won first place several times at the provincial and Grand North America fiddle contests and other events. Kai and Lia have also released two CDs. Yale’s future leaders attend national conference Seven of Yale secondary’s leadership students and two teachers recently attended the Canadian Student Leadership Conference (CSLC) in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. This conference was attended by over 1,000 student leaders from across Canada. They gathered in Weyburn and heard from keynote speakers, such as ex CFL player Michael “Pinball” Clemons, humanitarian Dr. Samantha Nutt, environmentalist Geoff Green, and motivational speakers Phil Boyte and Mark Scharenbroich The students also participated in workshops taught by educators from across Canada. The purpose of the conference was to motivate, prepare, and empower Canadian students for present and future leadership in their schools, activities, workplaces, and communities. The Yale leadership program sends students to this conference every year. Next year, the conference will be hosted in Prince Edward Island.

Heat in the Street summertime block parties a hit

There were three Heat in the Street events this year, and those involved hope that the communitybased events will be back next summer. The third and final “Heat in the Street” community block party and street hockey game was in the parking lot of Clayburn middle school in September. It attracted an enthusiastic crowd of more than 250 neighbourhood kids, parents, volunteers and emergency response personnel from fire, police, ambulance and sheriffs. The principal objective of the Heat in the Street program is to make better connections between Abbotsford’s emergency responders and the community members they serve, while promoting the many positive benefits of sports. This event is staffed mostly by
volunteers and has been growing in popularity since its inception in 2011. The warm and dry evening weather contributed to the party atmosphere and the free treats from Tim Hortons and McDonald’s were in big demand. Sonic Radio was also on site playing tunes all evening. The hockey players were divided into junior and senior groups and the action, while non-competitive, was still fast and furious. Besides the hockey games, other activities included a scavenger hunt for children, tours of emergency vehicles, and games hosted by Abbotsford Parks and Recreation volunteers. Mascots Hawkey, Sparky and Constable Cuffs were also on hand – much to the delight of children.
President wins highest Toastmasters award An Abbotsford woman was recently honoured for her achievements in the fields of communication and leadership. Brenda Molnar was presented with the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Award, which recognizes the pinnacle of achievement in the public speaking organization Toastmasters International. Less than 0.3 per cent of all Toastmasters members reach this level. Molnar joined the Messengers Toastmasters Club in November
2008 and set a goal to earn the DTM Award within five years. She accomplished her goal in less than four years by earning seven prerequisite communication and leadership awards, completing a “High Performance Leadership Project,” holding a district position by serving as area governor, and coaching a club that needed support. “Developing public speaking skills has taken me out of my comfort zone and provided opportunities in my professional and personal life
which make me a better person. Never underestimate your potential,” Molnar said. Molnar is president of the Messengers Toastmasters Club and has also earned the club’s Outstanding Toastmaster Award for the last two years. There are five Toastmaster clubs in Abbotsford. The flashy artistry of rookie winger Sven Baertschi is easy to appreciate. The quiet excellence of veteran centre Ben Walter, on the other hand, can be easy to overlook. Both Abbotsford Heat forwards, though, deserve applause in the wake of the an impressive sweep of the Peoria Rivermen on the opening weekend of the AHL regular season. Baertschi, the 20-year-old Swiss phenom who sits atop the Calgary Flames’ prospect list, was exactly as advertised. Taken as a whole, the weekend volleyball matches between the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades and the Columbia Bible College Bearcats represented everything that a crosstown rivalry should be. When the dust had settled after four drama-filled contests, the Cascades women and the Bearcats men were proud owners of two hard-earned victories apiece to open the PacWest regular season. The UFV women were national bronze medalists last season, but their Bearcats counterparts posed a stiff test both nights. On Friday at UFV’s Envision Athletic Centre, CBC won the first set 25-19, only to watch the Cascades regroup and win the next three (25-22, 25-22, 25-16) behind 15 kills from Jenna Evans and 14 from Kayla Bruce. On Saturday back at Columbia Place, the Bearcats took two of the first three sets. But the Cascades dug deep once again and rallied for a twopoint triumph in the fifth set (25-21, 20-25, 17-25, 25-22, 17-15). Bruce racked up 21 kills and four blocks. “It’s fun to play meaningful matches,” UFV women’s coach Dennis Bokenfohr said. “It allows you to see what new players do in stressful situations. More than any-

markably well when they were put under pressure.” On the men’s side, the Bearcats eked out a dramatic five-set win Friday (25-19, 1825, 26-24, 23-25, 18-16) before making slightly quicker work of the Cascades on Saturday (24-26, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20). Veterans Emmanuel Denguessi and Matt Lieuwen set the tone for CBC. “I was really happy with how the guys played,” Bearcats

Maleek Irons’s fifth touchdown run of the game capped a methodical sevenminute drive, giving the No. 3-ranked Hawks a 52-49 lead with 2:41 left in the fourth quarter. Mouat sealed the upset win over B.C.’s top-ranked team by intercepting Rams QB Ashton MacKinnon twice in the waning minutes. “Maleek Irons, boy, is he ever the real deal,” Rams coach Mark Townsend marvelled afterward. Indeed, Irons grew stronger as the game wore on, and finished with a mind-boggling stat line: 491 rushing yards on 48 carries. The Grade 11 tailback exploded for three TDs in the third quarter, lifting Mouat to a 45-42 advantage heading to the fourth. Mount Doug’s Marcus Davis had a long punt return major to give the Rams a 49-45 lead, but the Hawks responded with a lengthy, gritty drive that ended with another Irons TD run. The Mouat defence

The Hawks exacted a measure of revenge for their loss to the Rams in last year’s provincial title game, and they had a further point to prove after suffering a surprising 32-28 defeat to St. Thomas More last week. Irons was held to just 75 rush yards in that game. “It felt amazing, be-
cause I took a beating last week,” Irons said. “I feel relieved, I feel a weight lifted off my shoulders. After cruising through the early part of their schedule, the Abbotsford Pilots encountered a patch of turbulence last week. The local junior B hockey club suffered its first back-to-back losses of the season, falling 3-2 in overtime to the Richmond Sockeyes on Thursday and by the same score in regulation to the Ridge Meadows F l a m e s on Friday. B o t h g a m e s were on the road. The Pilots took a 2-1 lead into the third period against the Pacific Junior Hockey League-leading Sockeyes on goals by Ryan Parmar and Chris Vinette. But Richmond’s Sam Chichak scored early in the third, and Jeremy Hamaguchi got the game-winner 57 seconds into OT. The loss wasted a terrific effort from Abby goalie Aaron Oakley, who stopped 45 of 48 Sockeyes shots. On Friday, the Pilots out-shot the
Flames 37-17, but ran into a hot goalie in Wesley McLeod. Mico Dragutinovic and Adam Rossi were the only Abby shooters to squeak pucks past him. The Pilots obtained Dragutinovic and defenceman Michael Dion in a trade with the Port Moody Panthers last week in exchange for rookie forward Wolfgang Schoenefuhs. Dragutinovic, a 20-year-old forward from S u r r e y, was the Pa n t h e r s ’ top scorer at the time of the deal with 10 points in seven games. Despite the weekend defeats, Abbotsford still leads the Harold Brittain Conference with a 6-2-1 record. n The Pilots have a trio of games this week. They visit the Delta Ice Hawks on Tuesday (7:30 p.m., Delta Leisure Centre), and host the Mission City Outlaws on Friday (7:30 p.m., MSA Arena). On Saturday they hit the road once again to face the North Delta Devils (6:45 p.m., Sungod Arena).

More impressive than his stat line was how Baertschi scored. On Friday, he broke in alone on Peoria goalie Jake Allen and de-pantsed him with a backhand-forehand deke. Saturday’s goal was even prettier. On a Heat power play, Baertschi took a cross-ice pass from T.J. Brodie and one-timed a laser of a slap shot into the top corner. “Those type of goals, you just kind of go, ‘Wow,’” Heat head coach Troy Ward marvelled. “All of us do. “That’s an NHLtype goal from an NHL-type player. It’s a real pleasure to have that type of talent in the American Hockey League.” Then there’s Walter, whose game seems to exist to make those around him better. It’s probably no coincidence that all four of Baertschi’s points came after he was moved onto Walter’s line in the second period on Friday. Like Baertschi, Walter scored a goal each night, and he marked his 500th career AHL game on Abbotsford
Saturday. “It’s gone by really fast,” said Walter, who has racked up 413 points with the Providence Bruins, Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Lowell Devils, Lake Erie Monsters and the Heat. “It just makes you sit back and look at your career so far, and you don’t get to do that too often. It’s been a pleasure.” Roman Horak and Ben Street scored the Heat’s other goals Friday, while Horak, Lance Bouma, Dustin Sylvester and Krys Kolanos rounded out the scoring Saturday. Danny Taylor was between the pipes for both wins, stopping 41 out of 44 total shots. Earning the right to start is a huge feather in Taylor’s cap considering the depth the Heat have in goal. Ward went with Barry Brust as the backup both nights, which relegated Leland Irving to the press box. All three keepers are accomplished in their own right, but Irving, the Flames’ first-round pick in 2006, is the only one with a twoway NHL contract.
“It’s Danny’s net right now,” said Ward, indicating that Taylor’s training camp performance merited the starts. Equally interesting was Ward’s handling of the Heat’s veteran logjam. Abbotsford has six vets (320-plus games of pro experience), but can only dress five. Ward went with forwards Walter and Quintin Laing, and defenders Steve McCarthy, Joe Piskula and Joe Callahan on Friday, which left last season’s scoring leader Kolanos on the sideline. Kolanos made
his debut Saturday, while Callahan was scratched. “Obviously it’s not an easy situation,” Ward said. “It’s my job to look at the big group . . . and put out the lineup that I think gives us the best chance to win.” n The Heat host the Chicago Wolves, the Vancouver Canucks’ affiliate, in a FridaySaturday set this week (7 p.m. both nights, AESC). ADRIAN, Glen Donald Mar 31, 1932 - Oct 4, 2012 Glen was born in Kelstern, Sask., to Elmer and Sarah Adrian. The family moved to Abbotsford in 1940. Glen dropped out of school in his eighth grade and started apprenticeship as a printer at the ASM News where he worked for 20 years. During this time he married Eileen Priebe in 1951. Glen and Eileen have three children; Cindy (Marv) Braun; Sheri (Soren) Larsen and Michael. They have five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. In 1967 Glen started Century Form Rentals which he sold in 1985. Never one to sit still he spent many weekends and evenings drywallying. Glen loved playing and coaching softball. Glen needed to be busy so he went back to printing after selling his business. He worked for MSA Printing until his leg amputation. Glen and Eileen loved to travel many trips to California, Hawaii, Kelowna, 50th anniversary Alaska cruise. Glen went to the hospital Feb. 5, 2012 and over the following months made several trips from care facility to hospital. Passed away Oct. 4th in Abbotsford Regional Hospital with his family present. He was predeceased by his parents and five brothers, survived by one sister and two brothers. A memorial service was held October 9th, 2012 at Seven Oaks Alliance Church.
Frances Farrant (nee Schoberg) Frances Mary Farrant (nee Schoberg) passed away peacefully in her suite at Shannon Oaks in Vancouver on Sunday, 7 October, at the age of 87. Born and raised in a Christian home in Vancouver, she had been actively involved in various churches (Brethren Assemblies, Alliance Church, and more recently Bakerview Mennonite Church in Abbotsford), often teaching Sunday School or helping with the Pioneer Girls club. Frances worked as a secretary for Air Canada for 30 years, retiring in 1983. The previous year she married Phil Farrant and began a rich marriage together until his untimely death in 1993. Apart from her husband, Frances is pre-deceased by her sister, Hazel, and her two brothers, Stuart and John. She is survived by her niece and nephews, Pauline, Wesley, Gordon, and Gerry. A memorial service will be held at Bakerview Mennonite Church (2285 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford) on Saturday, 20 October, at 2:00 pm. Online condolences can be left at: www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com

Giesbrecht, Martha July 19, 1920 October 11, 2012 Martha went to be with her Lord and Savior, and to join her beloved husband of 67 years, Clarence, on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012. She is dearly loved and remembered by their children, Vernon (Jayne) of Ohio, Judy (Dennis) of Victoria, Howard (Sherr) of London, ON, Nancy (Chris) of Chilliwack, 9 beloved grandchildren, and 18 treasured great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her brother Abe (Laura) of Dalmeny, SK, her sister, Marjorie (George) of Saskatoon, her brother-in-law, Harry, of Rosthern, SK and many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends. Martha was born and grew up in Dalmeny, SK. She married Clarence in 1944. Together they served the Lord in Nigeria, with the Sudan Interior Mission from 1950 until 1964. Mom was in charge of running the Ilorin Guest House. She was always a generous, gracious hostess and loved entertaining throughout her life. Her musical talents had her singing constantly, joining large and small vocal groups. Family meant everything to her. Mom and Dad retired from Dalmeny to Abbotsford in 1986. From here their love of travelling the world continued, as did their involvement in Church and in their work with the Gideons. Mom is remembered for her unwavering faith, love of family, strength of character, her hospitality, her musical talents and her love and service for the Lord. The family wants to give special thanks to Martha’s many friends and to the caring attention by Home Support and the staff at Sherwood Crescent Manor. Donations in her memory can be addressed to the Gideons of Canada for Bible distribution. A visitation will be on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. SCHMIDT Joseph Tony Joe passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on October 12, 2012. He is predeceased by his parents, and is loved and missed by Dorothy, his wife of 61 years, his brother Willie, son Michael (Laura), granddaughters Nicole (Brock), Ashley and great-grandson Rook. Joe was born in the small town of Quinton, Saskatchewan on February 28, 1930. Eventually the family established their roots in Mission where, in 1952, he joined the BC Forest Service and enjoyed the challenges of a career spanning some 35 years, retiring in 1987. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting and hiking. He also enjoyed visits to Europe to reconnect with family roots. Since the 1970’s, trips to Hawaii were a favourite pasttime of the couple, where good times were enjoyed with close friends on the beach. Prayers will be recited on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 33333 Mayfair Avenue, Abbotsford.
