Stem Cell Technology A few weeks ago we gave Kirby a Stem Cell treatment. This was mainly meant for an arthritic joint in his leg. Now, three weeks later not only is his leg better but we are having to reduce his insulin dose. Kirby is a diabetic and had been on the same twice daily dose for over a year. Now, we are giving half the dose we were and he is more active, sleeps all night long without a 3 am "bathroom" call and even his cataracts have become less pronounced. This certainly was not an expected outcome, but it sure is welcome. Stem Cell treatments theoretically can treat any number of conditions, but the FDA has only approved arthritis treatments a labels indication. I see Kirby everyday, but I would think he is less grey too. Offered at Eureka Hospital.

federal government to court over their failure to meet the government’s legal obligations clearly layed out under one of Canada’s most important remaining federal environmental laws, the Species at Risk Act. Without recovery plans and designation of critical habitat, environ-

caribou, the PaciďŹ c humpback whale, the Nechako sturgeon and marbled murrelet for this case. Any further delay increases threats to these species, particularly given that their habitat is further threatened by proposals for the Northern Gateway Pipeline. It is unfortunate that environmental groups have to go to court in order to have the government act on its own legislation. We are working with Ecojustice’s legal team to highlight the need for action by the federal government. Without enforceable legislation, Canada’s wildlife populations are increasingly under threat from inappropriate development.

Avoid house-pests

The fall season has arrived and with it come a number of unwanted house guests that are looking to crash your warm and cozy home. I am not talking about crazy Uncle Frank, but rather those pesky insects and spiders. Most insects are accidental home invaders. They arrive unintentionally, often with our help. Bugs can wander in through open windows and doors, foundation cracks and broken window seals. But they can just as easily get in riding on our shoulders or on the back of the family pet. Check for bugs on everything you bring in from the outside. Shake out and inspect the laundry from the clothesline and the lawn furniture that you are storing inside. A beautiful bouquet of flowers and those fresh picked vegetables all may be harbouring insects as well. Carefully inspect any plants, like geraniums and coleus, that you are planning on overwintering and pay close attention to the soil they are planted in. Firewood is an especially bad culprit as it may not only have insects but their eggs as well. One pest that has been appearing with more frequency in our homes is the hobo spider. Also known as the aggressive house spider, this spider is normally seen from August through to October. Hobo spiders are brown and measure roughly ½- ¾ inch in length. Their legs show no distinct rings and have short hairs. Several chevron-shaped markings can be seen on their abdomens. Male hobo spiders also have what looks like two boxing gloves. The bite of the hobo spider can be quite irritating. Hobo spiders build a non-sticky, funnelshaped web that is often attached to a stationary object at ground level, things like planters or a house foundation. In your home, the hobo spider is usually found in the basement, often entering through damaged door and window seals or brought in on firewood. The best strategy is preventing the hobo spider from entering your home in the first place, but if they have already made their way inside, you can rid your home of hobo spiders by trapping them. Hobo spider traps use strong, non-toxic glue that has been baited with a natural pheromone. A single trap can catch as many as 30 spiders in an infested area. There are however many spiders that look very similar to the hobo, so even though your trap may have caught a lot of spiders, they may not all be hobos. This fall, show unwanted visitors the door. Until next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Kerstin

YOUR CITY....WORKING FOR YOU! Fall Deer Mating Season Approaching; Residents Urged To Be Aware

Residents and visitors are advised to continue to exercise both caution and common sense this fall, as the late autumn deer mating (rutting) period begins. That is the message from the City of Cranbrook. In the weeks leading up to the rut (into November and December) bucks increase their displays of dominance and indirect threats. A dominant buck typically circles a rival with deliberate steps; back arched, head low and tail flicking. Bucks can also display dominance by violently thrashing the bushes with their antlers. “We are into a transition period, where some does with fawns remain wary and potentially aggressive toward humans with dogs,” says Mayor Wayne Stetski. “Now we will likely also see an increase of particularly aggressive acts from the local urban buck population. Residents are reminded to please give deer plenty of space to move or leave the area. Do not walk closer to the deer; find another route.”

Free Transit Rides to Cranbrook Farmer’s Market Ends October 6th

Enjoy the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market with free transit rides every Saturday morning until October 6, 2012. The free ride comes with a catch: each passenger must be carrying a reusable or recycled bag, be traveling to and from downtown Cranbrook and indicate to their transit driver that they are attending the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market. The City of Cranbrook is funding the free rides for all 16 Saturday markets. The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market runs 9 am to 1 pm, but the free bus rides are from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. That gives early birds and last minute shoppers’ equal access to transit time. Trips to and from the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market via BC Transit are for non-transferable passes only. This innovative partnership between BC Transit and the City of Cranbrook also achieves five specific goals identified in the community’s long term sustainability plan – “Connecting to our Future.” For more information please visit – www.bctransit.com.

Benefits to Local Taxpayers 1.

2.

3.

As Minister of Community, Sport & Cultural Development, I work with local governments across BC, whether its helping Elkford fund its Community Centre, helping Sparwood complete the bridge & trail over the Elk River, helping Fernie improve drinking water infrastructure, or helping Cranbrook modernize its unique sewage treatment. Since 2001, the BC Liberal government has provided approximately $3 billion to B.C.’s local governments over and above funding streams that existed under the NDP government pre-2001. A strong economy enables these public investments and many others in the East Kootenay. Low income taxes, investments in infrastructure and a welcoming investment climate keep BC strong and employed and ensures that resources exist to assist local tax payers.

Thanksgiving Do’s and Don’ts Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday, a time where family comes together and hearts are filled with joy. With Thanksgiving comes the traditional turkey dinner with its numerous side dishes as well as a great selection of alcoholic beverages. While I am not saying that you shouldn’t enjoy a nice dinner, there are some Aurélie simple things you can do to avoid Wiedemann gaining extra weight during the Thanksgiving long week-end. 1. Make sure you drink lots of water during the day: often times people think they are hungry when in fact they are only thirsty and thus tend to eat more than necessary when dinner time comes. 2. Minimize alcohol intake: alcohol isn’t really good for you in many regards, that said, on a special occasion like Thanksgiving, enjoying a good glass of wine with dinner is part of the tradition. However, try to avoid having alcohol before dinner as it increases appetite. Have your wine with dinner instead, preferably combined with proteins (that should not be too challenging since it is part of the menu anyways). And of course, rather than drinking an entire bottle, try to stick to a glass or two; just remember that each time you have a glass of wine it is like eating a piece of pie calorie wise. So if you really want to enjoy a full dinner just drink one glass of wine and have a nice slice of pie for dessert. 3. Chew your food: To avoid overeating, take your time, really chew your food and stop before you feel you’ve eaten so much that your stomach is about to explode. By doing so, not only will you eat less but it will help digestion and it will really allow you to appreciate all the different flavours of your meal. 4. Move: Make sure you don’t sit inside all week-end, if it is nice out go for a walk with your folks, walk your dogs, play with the kids, go for a run in the morning or hit the gym if the weather isn’t optimal. 5. Last but not least: Enjoy!! Have fun during the week-end, relax and appreciate the moment, stress is your worst enemy so do yourself a favor and live the moment to the fullest! New take-out and delivery restaurant is an oasis for late eaters The Oasis is an aptly named break from the everyday. Newly situated in the Platzl in Kimberley, patrons only have to find the walking mall’s famous green door to find this innovative take-out restaurant. “We thought that Kimberley, especially the Platzl, needed a late-night and lunch take-out spot,” said coowner Chris Ballauf. “Just because it’s after midnight shouldn’t mean you can’t get great food in this town.” And the fare puts a twist on regular takeout food in more ways than one. You can try a famous Twisted Tater

Co-owners Chris Ballauf (left) and Sean Marvill invite you to experience both the Kimberley Platzl and their delicious food creations, made with food bought entirely locally. Just look for the take-out window located by the Platzl’s famous green door.

- a spiral baked potato covered in everything you could want on a spud - to an assortment of wraps, pitas, pizzas and a breakfast menu for those coming to the Oasis for their morning/afternoon opening. A particular favourite of this writer is the Pork Kabob Pita, made with marinated ovenroasted pork, mushrooms, red onions and cherry tomatoes and

topped with tzatziki sauce. This really hits the spot at 1 a.m. Of course, if you have the late night munchies at home, feel free to give Oasis a call, after 10:30 p.m. at 778-4814481 for delivery. You can also visit the Facebook page by searching for “Oasis late night take out.”

paign. “We are so excited to receive such a generous gift from Jaffray and especially another Lions Club. If it is wasn’t for this type of support from all over the East Kootenay the digital mammography campaign would never have reached its goal,” explains Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director . Anthea Gill, Professional Practice Leader for Interior Health’s EKRH Diagnostic Imaging Department had the pleasure of attending the Lions Club meeting and reports back that being able to address one of many key contributors to the project was a very warming and worthwhile experience. The Sand Creek Lions Club is a part of the success story to bring the best in breast cancer care imaging to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The equipment order has been released and a notification of timeline delivery is pending from the manufacturer shortly. EKFH thanks all those who made a campaign gift, the ability to triumph was because of you.

Obituaries

Obituaries OBITUARY

Ray Case November 28, 1921 – September 19, 2012 With extreme sadness, the family announces the passing of Ray Case. Born in Victoria, Ray was raised in Vancouver and along the BC coast. He joined his mother in Canal Flats in the early thirties, where he resided until joining the service in 1941. Ray served his country overseas in France, Germany, Holland and Belgium. He met and married the love of his life, Margaret, while on leave in Scotland. In 1946, they returned to live in the family home in Canal Flats. After his discharge from the army, Ray and Margaret ran the family owned Queen’s Hotel in Canal Flats. Ray had horses and packed supplies for the Forest Service into remote areas, such as White Swan Lake, on a trail that was only wide enough for one horse to pass through in the canyon area. He also had a trap line on the Palliser River, which he trapped for the last time 1967. In later years, he mainly worked in the forest industry, logging, scaling, hauling slabs and held numerous other positions in the sawmill until his retirement in 1986. Ray continued to serve the community he loved, Canal Flats, as a volunteer. He was chairman of the Hall Committee for both the BC and Canadian Centennials, he was a 55 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 71 and for several years, he conducted the Remembrance Day Ceremonies. He was a Trustee and Chairman of the local School Board and member of the Rod and Gun Club, which built the beach and road at Columbia Lake. He was one of the first Industrial First Aid attendants in Canal Flats, fielding emergency calls in the community since 1960. Ray was also a charter member of the Lions Club and life member of the Masonic Lodge “St. James” in Scotland. Ray knew the area surrounding Canal Flats like the back of his hand. He covered many of the Valley’s on foot with his hunting partners and he was always sharing stories of trapping, picnicking and fishing trips with family and friends. In retirement, Ray and Margaret loved to golf and travel, spending several winters in Arizona. Ray was predeceased by his Beloved Margaret in 2003 and their infant twin children, Russell and Margaret in 1944. He is survived by: his children, Robbie, Chuck, Babe and Heather and their spouses; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. Ray thought he lived in the best place in the world, with “Old Baldy” (his chapel) in clear view. After 80 years of family presence in Canal Flats, the corner downtown just won’t be the same without him! If friends so desire, donations in Ray`s memory can be made to: The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 71 PO Box 446, Invermere, BC V0A 1K0
