ransportation expert Todd Litman has a radical proposal to quickly solve congestion at the Massey Tunnel—one that doesn't involve waiting a decade for a new bridge or borrowing billions of dollars.

He would slap tolls on the Highway 99 crossing immediately.

Litman argues small tolls charged now and only during peak periods would decongest the corridor and allow a free flow of traffic through the tube.

The money collected could fund better bus service on the corridor and connecting routes, he said, providing a more viable transit alternative for drivers who don't need to use their own vehicles.

"You prevent the congestion from getting severe," Litman said. "It's the efficient, rational solution that could actually start providing benefits in a year."

Premier Christy Clark last month vowed the province will begin planning to build a new Deas crossing over the next 10 years.

Litman, head of the Victoria Transportation Policy Institute, said charging low tolls now would at the very least ease gridlock and build acceptance of higher eventual tolls on the corridor ahead of a replacement. He said that's

The plan calls for 312 units of three-storey town homes and five, five-storey apartment buildings, two of which will be for market rentals. This is expected to add over 672 units in total and a potential increase in the population of well over 1,200 people.

“This is an ill-conceived plan driven purely by maximizing profit and density," said Malcolm Ashford, former Vancouver Park Board chair and 19-year Marina Gardens resident. "it needs to go back to the drawing board before it even gets off the ground."

All the residents at the meeting voted unanimously to oppose the density being proposed and also to oppose the concept of five apartment buildings in a single family area. it is anticipated that the plan will come before Council for the first time at a workshop on Oct. 15.

The Delta School District recently entered into a 20-year partnership with FortisBC to provide thermal energy for 19 buildings, but a Delta engineer warns there are hidden costs to the project.

The $6.4 million project—with $5 million coming from Fortis and $1.4 million from a provincial green energy fund—was attractive to the school district because the capital costs are being paid by Fortis.

But Neil Caldwell, an energy conservation engineer who lives in Delta and has children in the school district, says the economics for the project don't make any sense.

"Geoexchange can be a great application for some projects, especially new construction, however, retrofitting them into an existing school is very expensive," says Caldwell, adding taxpayers will likely be paying the costs for years to come.

Caldwell pointed to comments made by the B.C. Utilities Commission—which is responsible for regulating rates and service quality in natural gas and electricity utilities—in its review of the project prior to approval. The panel wrote that it was concerned with the cost risks of the school district assuming a cost of service model with Fortis.

The panel also warned about increased operating costs because of greater fuel requirements and the need to purchase additional carbon offsets to meet the requirements of carbon neutrality. With few performance guarantees, the school district has little control over costs, it added.

Proponents of the project have claimed the contrary— that reduced natural gas usage means the school district expects to save $180,000 a year, and that energy output will be reduced by nearly half. Greenhouse gas emissions are also expected to be cut by 69 per cent.

The school district was originally approached by Fortis in late 2009 during a time when it was looking at

finding more energy efficient replacements for gas-fired furnaces that had reached the end of their lifespan.

"What we wanted to do was get away from spending considerable taxpayer dollars on replacing and operating the equipment, but at the same time we wanted to reduce our need for energy to heat our buildings and as a result pay less on our carbon taxes and carbon offsets," says Frank Geyer, director of facilities and planning for the school district.

But that answer doesn't satisfy Caldwell.

"Vicki Huntington was quoted as stating the tunnel should not be replaced at any cost, and greenhouse gas reductions should not be pursued at any cost either."

"The technology chosen by Delta SD for this project is expensive—more expensive than some available alternatives," the B.C. Utilities Commission wrote. However, in approving the deal, the panel acknowledged the school district needs to replace aging infrastructure and the project gives it "the opportunity to reduce its GHG emissions while helping to mitigate its exposure to potentially increasing carbon offset costs in the future."

Because Fortis came to the school district with the proposal, some energy providers are also miffed at the sole source contract. Darryl McCulley, B.C. regional manager at Smith Energy, says costs have already escalated. He says that between a March 15, 2011 school board meeting when trustees were presented the project, and the final agreement in February, 2012, capital costs had increased by 90 per cent, or $1.5 million.

But Geyer says McCulley is merely criticizing the project because his company is a competitor with Fortis. The school district voluntarily went through a B.C. Utilities Commission process to further provide transparency and protection for taxpayers, he added.

he terms organic and fair trade have become synonymous with good, independent coffee houses in recent years.

The green movement has ensured people think twice about not only where their coffee comes from, but the farmers who grow it.

For the owners of Tsawwassen's new Wood N Frog Coffee Company on 12th Ave., Sandy McKellar and Kelly McCloskey, they take that message seriously.

"Coffee's a crop," says Sandy. "You need to understand the soil and the ecology of it."

The Wood N Frog is a "micro-roastery," t a k i ng c e r t i fied fair trade Adrian MacNair organic importated beans from Costa Rica, Brazil, Peru, El Salvador, and Sumatra, and roasting them right on the spot using an environmentally sustainable, high-efficiency, low-energy consumption, low emissions green coffee air roaster.

The process takes about 10-12 minutes, and the beans need a day or two afterward to let the carbon dioxide dissipate.

"It's like a chemistry lab back here," says Kelly, only half-joking.

They also roast locally-grown B.C. decaf, which Kelly says is as delicious as the other choices.

"Most people think of decaf as bad coffee," he confesses. "But if it's roasted well, the best coffee tasters in the world can't tell the difference."

The new business venture was borne after a visit to the Canadian Coffee and Tea Show in Vancouver last fall.

The experience convinced them to take a course in the science of coffee-making at the Canadian Coffee Academy.

The coffee connoisseurs originally became interested after travelling to countries like Turkey and Costa Rica, where the bean is to coffee as the grape is to wine.

"Coffee's like wine when you realize roasting it different makes a difference," says Kelly, who only began drinking it a few short years ago.

Sandy, who grew up in Tsawwassen, said the two moved back to South Delta for the quality of life here.

A big fan of frogs, she originally visited Costa Rica to grab a glimpse of the redeyed tree frog. She suggested using the amphibian as a symbol for the quality of their coffee.

Frogs are very sensitive to ecological changes in the environment, so a healthy frog population indicates a healthy environment, explains Sandy.

"Our frog is giving you an environmental reading on how healthy our coffee is," she says, smiling at the idea.

As for the wood, Kelly has a background in fine wood crafting, and was one of the contractors responsible for the environmentally-friendly roof at the Richmond Olympic speed skating oval.

The Wood N Frog will offer a full organic menu of sandwiches and other treats to go with their many coffee flavours.

Old toys You can add recycling old and broken electronic toys to your environmental action list. Check around your home to see what old or broken electronic toys may be lurking in closets or play rooms.

Potato perfection Keep the grill season going while enjoying a fine harvest of Delta's freshest potatoes The potato harvest is almost finished, which means Delta residents can now put that Canadian food staple on their dinner tables, while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with buying locally.

Long-time potato farmer Peter Guichon says the crop profile was a bit smaller than average with the dry, hot summer and fall, but the quality has been excellent.

Guichon is one of many farmers belonging to BCfresh, a distributor of local produce for those wanting to live the "100-mile diet," aware of the effect transport trucks have on the environment.

For Guichon, this time of year reminds him of a childhood filled with potatoes every meal. But that doesn't bother him.

"I'm kind of—I don't want to say old-fashioned—I'm just fine with a baked potato or a mashed potato.

"But there are always new recipes and we're trying new stuff all the time."

Lisa Bolton of Delta, who won the BCfresh "Be Fresh" recipe challenge, shares her directions for delicious smoked nugget potato skewers with bacon.

Smoked BCfresh Nugget Potato Skewers with Bacon INGREDIENTS For the skewers: 12 BC Fresh Red or Yellow Nugget Potatoes 3 slices of Johnston’s Applewood Smoked Bacon 12 rosemary sprigs 1/4 cup Olive Oil salt and pepper to taste 12 wooden or metal Skewers

DIRECTIONS Soak wood chips in a bowl of water for 30 minutes to 2 hours. If using wooden skewers, soak them, too. Remove the bottom half of each rosemary sprig by pinching the twig with thumb and index finger halfway down the stem and sliding it down. Set the 12 sprigs aside.

Take the rosemary that comes off the twig and place it in a small bowl.

Add the olive oil.

Slice the bacon in half horizontally to make two long 6-inch narrow

For the grill: Hickory or Maplewood Wood Chips (or combination) For the dip: 1 cup Avalon Organic Sour Cream 2 T. Avalon Organic Heavy Cream 1/3 c. fresh chives

strips (vary for your potato size).

Drain the wood chips and put them in a smoker meant for your grill, or wrap in tin foil. Smoker chips go on direct heat, potatoes on indirect. Set to 250 to 300˚F. While grill is heating, take a potato and pierce a hole through the top with a skewer. Wrap a piece of bacon around the potato. Secure it with a rosemary twig through the hole you just punched in the top.

Repeat 12 times. Skewer three potatoes on each skewer.

Head over to the grill, put them on indirect heat. Give them all a brush with the rosemary oil. Season with a bit of salt and pepper. Close the lid and do not open for 45 minutes. Grill for 1.5 hours or until ready.

Put the sour cream and heavy cream in a bowl and whip for 3-5 minutes with beaters or a whisk, until nice and fluffy. Stir in finely chopped chives.

You can give everyone a skewer or even slide them off the skewers and plate them all individually.

leTTeRS light rail better than new crossing I frequently commute through the tunnel of hate where no doubt the gnashing of teeth and four lettered words are occasionally uttered under one’s breath. Vicki Huntington has aptly described the George Massey Tunnel as a parking lot.

That’s a pretty good comparison.

I think the seagull population flying high above would unanimously agree with her.

I never thought of the tunnel funnel quite in those terms. I thought of it more as a dark abyss I was approaching at glacial speed wondering if I’d ever make it out the other end.

A solution definitely needs to be found but I think we’re approaching it from the wrong end. No pun of course intended.

For sure a bigger state of the art bridge crossing would alleviate this particular bottleneck, albeit for only a brief time, but this plan would only exacerbate the mammoth bottlenecks that already exist on the Oak and Knight street approaches.

Let us think of three enormous traffic funnels: the Massey Tunnel and the Oak and Knight Street northbound approaches. Alleviating the funnel effect at the Massey Tunnel by constructing a sixlane bridge simply means that motorists arrive at the two other bottlenecks that much more

quickly. Then what? How does this justify spending $3 to $4 billion on a six-lane crossing?

The Oak and Knight bridges, which are the main connectors connecting Richmond and South Delta to Vancouver are simply unable to handle the current volume of traffic, let alone additional traffic. In fact the Vancouver grid system is simply not designed to handle more traffic. This is our reality.

Considerable condo development is taking place along the Cambie Street corridor in Vancouver. At the foot of Cambie Street and Marine Drive a significantly large condo complex is being built adjacent to the Canada Line. When the condos went on sale they were snapped up in an afternoon and they are not even built yet.

Why? It is because the complex is adjacent to a very efficient Canada Line. The same thing will happen along the Broadway corridor when light rail or a sky train is developed. If there is an efficient easy to access and well maintained public transit system available it will be used and used regularly.

In my mind it is not about the environmental impact new construction will have over the Fraser. It is not about, “Do we build a bridge or a tunnel and should it be six or eight lanes?” Nor is it about, “Where along the Fraser do we build it?” It is about providing a safe, fast and comfortable means of transporting commuters from point A to point B in the quickest possible time.

It is about developing a state of the art light rail transit system.

I truly believe it is time regional governments and the provincial government took a serious look at this option rather than always thinking that bigger bridges or more crossings will solve traffic issues.

I believe we need to be getting people out of their vehicles, not figuring out how to spend billions of dollars keeping them in their vehicles.

The three main communities of Ladner, Tsawwassen and White Rock could effectively be served with a state of the art light rail system provided serious thought went into the plan. It means commuters would save a bundle in gas, daily tolls and parking lot fees. It means less farmland being expropriated.

A light rail system also means a greener environment.

With White Rock, Ladner and Tsawwassen continuing to grow and with Delta Port expansion a reality I do not see a six-lane crossing an intelligent solution at all.

If commuters had easy access to a light rail system that was so good that commuters actually preferred to take light rail rather than drive then I think we will have accomplished something spectacular. Getting people to say, “Hey, you know taking public transit isn’t so bad after all, in fact it’s quite enjoyable” could become a reality. I believe it would and I believe if we build it… they will come.

Don't feel blue about green these days it seems that no matter where you look, something bad is happening to the environment.

Whether it's the gigantic flotsam of plastic the size of texas in the middle of the Pacific ocean, the ongoing deforestation of irreplaceable rainforest, or the increase of human-caused gasses into the atmosphere believed to be responsible for climate change, the idea one person can change anything might be daunting.

But don't give up hope so easily.

Although one person can't effect peace in the Middle east, global nuclear disarmament, or a ban on harvesting sharks for their fins, individuals can still make a small difference that adds up.

So, maybe you can't stop climate change, but you can always choose to walk to the store, or get on your bicycle. it not only takes one car off the road, if only for one trip, but it's good for your health.

So, maybe you can't stop deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. You can always buy locally farmed produce and livestock, especially in a community as abundantly stocked as South Delta.

So, maybe you can't put a halt to the plastic pile in the ocean. But you can always reduce your garbage use by recycling or finding products that use minimalist packaging. it might seem like a long, lonely climb up Mount everest, but each climb to a summit begins with a single step.

By doing little things that are positive for your local environment, others may join your effort. it's this small, grassroots coalescence of like-minds that results in large scale change. that doesn't mean you have to eat granola, let your hair grow long, and start singing Kumbaya.

But treating the world you live in with the same care and respect as you would treat yourself or your loved ones just makes sense.

And on that note, don't you want your children or grandchildren to enjoy the simple pleasures of clean air and open green spaces? the example for them begins with you.

Green harvest Delta's agricultural sector is feeding people and educating them too about the benefits of growing your own food AdriAn MacNair reporter

W

hile the Lower Mainland has exploded in development over the past few decades, South Delta's corn and potato fields are once again basking in October harvest sunshine.

The rich and fertile sunbelt of Ladner and Tsawwassen have been preserved in the Agricultural Land Reserve, providing nearby urban areas with delicious, fresh, organic, environmentallyfriendly choices for their dinner tables.

Leading the way in agricultural education and preservation is the Earthwise Garden Society, located in Tsawwassen since 2007.

The Society runs a 65-space community allotment garden, provides an ecological demonstration garden, and farms a two-acre certified organic field, which they're busy harvesting for cucumbers, squash, and other veggies.

"Basically the purpose of the farm is to reestablish where our food comes from and inspire young people in careers that are food related," says Patricia Fleming, executive director of the Society.

Both the garden and the farm are used for teaching horticulture and pollination to children in the Delta School District.

Kids take field trips to do hands-on activities that helps them learn and connect to their environment.

And although they produce like a real farm, the primary goal is to help people learn about farming.

"Awareness is really growing," says Fleming. "We've found a lot of interest in our organics."

People are becoming more aware of agriculture commodities and what it takes to put food on the table of British

Columbians, she adds.

The Society has a volunteer-run Farm Store open Wednesdays from 3-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10-2. Proceeds go to support education programs.

"The comments we get from people visiting the food store is how good everything tastes."

Becoming bee aware The Society benefits local farmers as well—their signature Feed the Bees program started due to the interest of farmers.

Bee populations in North America are on the decline, even though demand for pollinators has increased.

Bees are imported during certain times of food production to help with pollination, but if a food source isn't provided year-round, the bees can die off.

By having homeowners plant with bee habitat in mind, it will keep the pollinating colonies intact, says Fleming.

"People are a little afraid of bees but the reality is most people don't get stung. They're just focused on their work."

Earthwise works with the Delta School District to provide a high school credit called "Sustainable Resources Agriculture" which includes bee education.

And Fleming says they're looking to provide a bee garden tour of South Delta homes next spring.

Lauren Munden, communications manager with the Corporation of Delta, says Delta has a Mason Bee Box program to promote pollination.

The Corp implemented a mason bee demonstration project at municipal hall in 2010, and have since added three more at Rotary Park, Ernie Burnett Park and Diefenbaker Park, as well as one in the Delta Nature Reserve.

Indeed, not only is Westham Island home to some of the richest diversity of bird species in Western Canada, Great Blue Herons can be seen waddling through farmers fields.

Her business thrives because it's close to Vancouver and the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. But she's not in it for the money.

"The land is worth so much money here. I can make a go at it but I'm not getting rich."

Ellis keeps farming for many reasons.

Born and raised on the island, she loves her job and wants people to see how important it is to keep farmland in the ALR. "And we're going to lose it if we don't," she says.

"This is the greatest agricultural land there is. And to see it paved over... that wouldn't be right."

Going green in Delta A snapshot of some of Delta’s environmental initiatives The Green Can Program The Green Can program offers weekly collection of food waste and yard trimmings for single-family homes in Delta. This program allows residents to place all cooked and uncooked food waste, along with food-soiled paper and yard trimmings in one can for curbside collection. The Green Can Program will save landfill space, reduce greenhouse gases and create compost while supporting our region’s goal of 70% waste diversion.

The Delta Chamber of Commerce and Earthwise Society went before council in the spring to ask the Corporation to look into ensuring that the parks department plants bee-supporting species of flowers.

Education on agriculture Delta is seeking permission from the ministry of education to purchase 20 acres of farmland on 56th St. on the former site of the Tsawwassen School Reserve for $1.2 million. The site is currently being leased by Snow Farms for soil-based organic farming.

The Corporation will put a restricted covenant on the property to maintain its purpose.

Delta's agricultural plan was approved in October of last year with the help of an agricultural advisory committee.

"The purpose of that was to help support agriculture in our community and integrate farming more closely with the community," says Munden, adding

that plan is still in the implementation phase.

The plan includes promoting active farm use on land within the Agricultural Land Reserve, provide mentorship opportunities, improve irrigation, and undertake public education and awareness initiatives.

The Corporation has also included the environmentally-sensitive Burns Bog wetlands into the Delta School District curriculum for Grade 7 students.

Sharon Ellis, owner of Westham Island Herb Farm, also sees her business as an educational opportunity.

"I wanted people to know how it comes out of the ground and not just off the shelf," she says.

Ellis' organic farm was opened in 1994, a break from the traditional farming her family has done on the island since 1916.

Prior to 1994 she sold pumpkins in front of her house each October and made the display a little bigger every year.

"I realized I could only sell pumpkins one month out of the year so I decided I better expand," she says laughing.

She opened a greenhouse in 1994

and started with herbs, vegetables and fresh cut flowers.

The first year Ellis was lucky if she'd sell one vegetable plant. Now, it composes 50 per cent of plant sales in the spring. People are changing their lawns and flowerbeds into vegetable gardens.

"What I've really noticed in the last two years is people growing their own food," she says.

Ellis is always trying out new crops and ideas. Some ideas work and some don't. When she started growing artichokes she didn't know what to expect, but they've taken off.

And although farmers still use pesticides, she thinks organics are more popular now. As an organic farmer, she takes the good with the bad. Meaning some crops will be eaten by pests.

That's part of the education process, as well.

"I know everybody can't farm the way I farm, but if I can get the person who goes to the grocery store to think about that, it's important.

"It gets people onto the farm, they see it growing, and maybe some of it sinks in."

Delta offers kitchen containers for $3, which provides a handy way for people to get their food waste and foodsoiled paper from the kitchen into the Green Can.

Saving Our Industrial Lands (SOIL) – Brownfield Development The goal of the Saving Our Industrial Lands (SOIL) initiative is to promote the closure of derelict landfill sites along the River Road East corridor, facilitate their sustainable redevelopment, and spur the economic revitalization of the surrounding area.

The $7 million closure project for the Delta Shake & Shingle landfill site used innovative engineering to transform 70% of the landfill to productive industrial use. The construction of a multi-million dollar eco-industrial facility by Ocean Trailer, the property owner, will be complete by the end of 2012, bringing with it more than 150 jobs and spurring interest in other developments in the area.

BC Rivers Day Planting To celebrate BC Rivers Day 2012, the Corporation of Delta and local volunteers planted 75 native trees and shrubs along the Northeast Interceptor Canal in the Delta Nature Reserve. This area was replanted to replace trees lost to beaver activities which have contributed to stream bank erosion and habitat loss. The new trees and shrubs will provide shade and nutrients for salmon and other aquatic wildlife.

The Society runs a 65-space community allotment garden, provides an ecological demonstration garden, and farms a two-acre certified organic field, which they're busy harvesting for cucumbers, squash, and other veggies.

"Basically the purpose of the farm is to reestablish where our food comes from and inspire young people in careers that are food related," says Patricia Fleming, executive director of the Society.

Both the garden and the farm are used for teaching horticulture and pollination to children in the Delta School District.

Kids take field trips to do hands-on activities that helps them learn and connect to their environment.

And although they produce like a real farm, the primary goal is to help people learn about farming.

"Awareness is really growing," says Fleming. "We've found a lot of interest in our organics."

People are becoming more aware of agriculture commodities and what it takes to put food on the table of British

Columbians, she adds.

The Society has a volunteer-run Farm Store open Wednesdays from 3-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10-2. Proceeds go to support education programs.

"The comments we get from people visiting the food store is how good everything tastes."

Becoming bee aware The Society benefits local farmers as well—their signature Feed the Bees program started due to the interest of farmers.

Bee populations in North America are on the decline, even though demand for pollinators has increased.

Bees are imported during certain times of food production to help with pollination, but if a food source isn't provided year-round, the bees can die off.

By having homeowners plant with bee habitat in mind, it will keep the pollinating colonies intact, says Fleming.

"People are a little afraid of bees but the reality is most people don't get stung. They're just focused on their work."

Earthwise works with the Delta School District to provide a high school credit called "Sustainable Resources Agriculture" which includes bee education.

And Fleming says they're looking to provide a bee garden tour of South Delta homes next spring.

Lauren Munden, communications manager with the Corporation of Delta, says Delta has a Mason Bee Box program to promote pollination.

The Corp implemented a mason bee demonstration project at municipal hall in 2010, and have since added three more at Rotary Park, Ernie Burnett Park and Diefenbaker Park, as well as one in the Delta Nature Reserve.

Indeed, not only is Westham Island home to some of the richest diversity of bird species in Western Canada, Great Blue Herons can be seen waddling through farmers fields.

Her business thrives because it's close to Vancouver and the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. But she's not in it for the money.

"The land is worth so much money here. I can make a go at it but I'm not getting rich."

Ellis keeps farming for many reasons.

Born and raised on the island, she loves her job and wants people to see how important it is to keep farmland in the ALR. "And we're going to lose it if we don't," she says.

"This is the greatest agricultural land there is. And to see it paved over... that wouldn't be right."

Going green in Delta A snapshot of some of Delta’s environmental initiatives The Green Can Program The Green Can program offers weekly collection of food waste and yard trimmings for single-family homes in Delta. This program allows residents to place all cooked and uncooked food waste, along with food-soiled paper and yard trimmings in one can for curbside collection. The Green Can Program will save landfill space, reduce greenhouse gases and create compost while supporting our region’s goal of 70% waste diversion.

The Delta Chamber of Commerce and Earthwise Society went before council in the spring to ask the Corporation to look into ensuring that the parks department plants bee-supporting species of flowers.

Education on agriculture Delta is seeking permission from the ministry of education to purchase 20 acres of farmland on 56th St. on the former site of the Tsawwassen School Reserve for $1.2 million. The site is currently being leased by Snow Farms for soil-based organic farming.

The Corporation will put a restricted covenant on the property to maintain its purpose.

Delta's agricultural plan was approved in October of last year with the help of an agricultural advisory committee.

"The purpose of that was to help support agriculture in our community and integrate farming more closely with the community," says Munden, adding

that plan is still in the implementation phase.

The plan includes promoting active farm use on land within the Agricultural Land Reserve, provide mentorship opportunities, improve irrigation, and undertake public education and awareness initiatives.

The Corporation has also included the environmentally-sensitive Burns Bog wetlands into the Delta School District curriculum for Grade 7 students.

Sharon Ellis, owner of Westham Island Herb Farm, also sees her business as an educational opportunity.

"I wanted people to know how it comes out of the ground and not just off the shelf," she says.

Ellis' organic farm was opened in 1994, a break from the traditional farming her family has done on the island since 1916.

Prior to 1994 she sold pumpkins in front of her house each October and made the display a little bigger every year.

"I realized I could only sell pumpkins one month out of the year so I decided I better expand," she says laughing.

She opened a greenhouse in 1994

and started with herbs, vegetables and fresh cut flowers.

The first year Ellis was lucky if she'd sell one vegetable plant. Now, it composes 50 per cent of plant sales in the spring. People are changing their lawns and flowerbeds into vegetable gardens.

"What I've really noticed in the last two years is people growing their own food," she says.

Ellis is always trying out new crops and ideas. Some ideas work and some don't. When she started growing artichokes she didn't know what to expect, but they've taken off.

And although farmers still use pesticides, she thinks organics are more popular now. As an organic farmer, she takes the good with the bad. Meaning some crops will be eaten by pests.

That's part of the education process, as well.

"I know everybody can't farm the way I farm, but if I can get the person who goes to the grocery store to think about that, it's important.

"It gets people onto the farm, they see it growing, and maybe some of it sinks in."

Delta offers kitchen containers for $3, which provides a handy way for people to get their food waste and foodsoiled paper from the kitchen into the Green Can.

BC Rivers Day Planting To celebrate BC Rivers Day 2012, the Corporation of Delta and local volunteers planted 75 native trees and shrubs along the Northeast Interceptor Canal in the Delta Nature Reserve. This area was replanted to replace trees lost to beaver activities which have contributed to stream bank erosion and habitat loss. The new trees and shrubs will provide shade and nutrients for salmon and other aquatic wildlife.
