United Way warns of scammers

The United Way is alerting people to a scam targeting its organization and area residents.

United Way of North Okanagan Columbia Shuswap executive director Linda Yule issued a release Wednesday, stating it has come to the United Way’s attention that perpetrators have scammed citizens in Vernon and the Shuswap by going door-to-door asking for donations

to the United Way. “The funds are being collected using hand-held debit machines, and donors are sometimes being offered Tim Hortons gift cards as a reward for donating,” said Yule, who is adamant this is not how the United Way canvasses for funds.

“United Way, in our region, does not canvass door-to-door,” she said.

“As well, we do not offer rewards to donors and do not use hand-held card readers.”

SHUSWAP SWAT keeps focus on watershed protection

Say “Shuswap” and most people think of the huge lake with more than 1,000 kilometres of shoreline.

But there is a lot more water in the Shuswap watershed, a system that forms the major southeast contributor to the Fraser River watershed and provides key habitat for a significant percentage of provincial fish stocks. And as a Shuswap watershed website notes, the system is home to diverse wildlife and plant species, and provides water for drinking, development and agriculture.

That the watershed is rehabilitated where needed and protected for future generations is the aim of the non-profit Shuswap Water Action Team Society (SWAT), who held their AGM Oct. 10.

President Ray Nadeau says some of the group’s accomplishments include helping to get the ban on private sewage discharges into Shuswap Lake, helping to establish Shuswap Lake Integrated Planning Process (SLIPP) and its first three years of funding, pushing for a greywater ban in 2007, volunteer co-ordination with Ministry of the Environment and SLIPP on water quality testing, and raising public and political awareness of the issues.

SWAT volunteers assisted MOE with algae testing by checking measuring devices on a regular basis over the summer to make sure they were protected.

SWAT directors are participating on the public advisory committee for the development of the Regional District of North Okanagan’s Shuswap River Watershed Sustainability Plan, which includes one-half of Mara Lake.

“It’s their version of SLIPP,” says Nadeau, noting he is a member of several working committees to co-ordinate their work with SWAT and SLIPP. “My particular interest is in making sure it’s well co-ordinated. We really wanted them to be part of SLIPP, but they had already begun their own process. It’s actually working very well.”

SWAT was on the public advisory committee for Area C South Shuswap’s official community plan, that performs many functions, such as restricting the number of boat moorages and limiting high-density waterfront development.

Despite a raucous Aug. 28 public meeting that led to the deferral of third reading at the Columbia Shuswap Regional District September board meeting, Nadeau believes the official community plan should be given final approval in October.

“I thought it was unnecessary to defer it; it was a community process that involved hundreds of people over a long period of time,” he says, noting agreement on the OCP was attained after a broad spectrum of people, including the business community, developers and others from across South Shuswap participated in the process. “A lot of people think it was Ted’s (Bacigalupo) process. It wasn’t.

Ted happened to be the director and he initiated the process.”

While many people, himself included, did not agree with everything included in the OCP, Nadeau says everyone in Area C had an opportunity to provide their input.

“I didn’t agree with everything that was in there, but I was part of the process and we had to come to a general agreement of what would work,” he says.

“And everyone had the opportunity for input at six public meet-

ings.”

On the commercial development front, SWAT worked on a number of Blind Bay waterfront development issues.

These included developments where property owners have extended private docks beyond what is permitted by government under legal tenure.

“The permits dictate dock size and number of boats requirements and some have gone beyond that and are being investigated by government,” Nadeau says. “It was brought to our attention and we turned it over to the government.”

SWAT was also involved in evaluating flooding impacts on septic systems this spring and provincial sewage regulation issues.

“What we’ve been finding is actually the impact of flooding goes much higher than the water levels,” he says. “It backs up in the underground water table up the hillsides and gets into septic systems.”

And, speaking of septic systems, Nadeau says as far as SWAT is concerned, septic regulations are totally inadequate.

“There are still some big problems,” he says. “Since 2005, there have been inadequate regulations to govern the systems – everything from conflicts of interest to poorly written legislation.”

With regard to the recent closure of two South Shuswap beaches because of high levels of E. Coli, Nadeau notes there are other factors affecting water quality.

Looking at the year ahead, Nadeau says SWAT is looking at creating an educational video in partnership with SLIPP “One of our most important objectives is to see if we can get SLIPP to become a fully funded water board like they have in the Okanagan,” says Nadeau.

Officials to lift fire ban in Salmon Arm Fire Zone With a forecast of significant rain over the weekend, Kamloops Fire Centre officials decided to lift a ban on open burning on Monday, Oct. 15.

Officials had hoped to lift the ban on Oct. 1, but most of the Salmon Arm zone remained at high or extreme risk for wildfires.

“From altitude 1,000 metres and below to valley bottoms, we’re in extreme or high danger class,” said local fire protection officer Larry Osachoff.

Campfires were the only fires permitted in the zone and fire officials were – and still are, calling for extreme caution.

Burning debris piles and industrial burning

remain strictly prohibited at this time, and the prohibition will not be lifted until Monday – if the area experiences significant rainfall.

Fire season was late in starting due to heavy spring and early summer rains, and there has been almost no precipitation since late August – just 4.6 mm since Sept. 11.

Additional fire crews and air tankers were kept on hand to deal with the extended fire season.

Intentionally set fires were expected to cause smoke in Silver Creek earlier this week.

The B.C. Wildfire Management Branch was set to burn small plots of land above Salmon Valley Road,

intended as an outdoor classroom for a fire investigation course planned for 25 Korean Forest Service staff members.

Students will examine the burned plots, looking for the source of the burns.

The branch is recognized as a world leader in wildfire management and has provided training to many other countries.

This year’s fire season was relatively easy on provincial resources with 412 fires in the Kamloops Fire Centre – 32 occurring in the Salmon Arm Zone, 20 that were caused by lightning and 12 believed to have been caused by human activity of some kind.

Celebrating man, his music

For those that have ever lived in the Yukon or lingered too long under the spell of the midnight sun, there is a deep seated desire, if not need, sometimes to return to the Yukon to see if it is still as it was the last time they left.

Canadian singersongwriter Al Oster, who arrived in the Yukon in 1957, was one of those people who fell under its spell.

He soon began writing and singing songs about the land and its inhabitants and by 1987 had recorded and released 14 LPs in Canada, the USA and Europe.

In 1988, he filmed and released a music documentary on the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898, which included a number of his original compositions.

Oster attained national recognition for his musical works in

1968 by becoming the first Canadian composer to receive the Broadcast Music, Inc., BMI CANADA Certificate of Honour Achievement Award for an outstanding contribution to Canadian music in the country/folk music category.

In 1993, he received the Yukon Heritage

Award from the Yukon Historical and Museums Association for his contribution to the preservation of Yukon history.

Another rewarding event took place in 1999, when he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada for his contribution to Canadian heritage. In

2006 he was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame On Saturday, Oct. 27, 2 p.m. at the Fifth Avenue Seniors Centre, a number of well-known musicians and friends from across Canada will be gathering to pay tribute to Oster and his legacy of songs.

Tickets for the concert are $15 and are available at Acorn Music and at the door.

Among the performers appearing on stage will be Juno-nominated country singer-songwriter Jimmy Arthur Ordge from Edmonton, Hank Karr, from Whitehorse, country gospel legend Harry Rusk, Duane Stewart, Vickie Wiebe, Lloyd Pulliam and Larry and Jane Stephenson, along with True Country as house band.

Although Oster left the Yukon in 1975, he says he still keeps going back each year just to see if it is still as it was when he left.

“This being OK, we’re not supposed to be OK. Here’s the revolution: What if grief is a skill, something that must be learned and cultivated and taught?

What if grief is the natural order of things, a way of loving life anyway?” he asks on his website at www.orphanwisdom.com.

Described as a teacher, author and spiritual activist, Jenkinson says he was pulled into grief counselling in a large Toronto hospital in the early 1990s by medical and counselling staff who were concerned about two groups of

men who had loved ones who were either dying or had already died.

One group was belligerent and hostile and the other group would not talk at all.

“Eventually, we pulled a group together and there I learned very quickly something I didn’t know previously,” he said. “People knew how to be angry, but they didn’t know how to be sad.”

Within two years, Jenkinson was the head of a psycho-social team at the hospital, in charge of the non-medical side of palliative care.

“What I realized was there is no language that does justice to what dying asks of you and two, how brutally difficult it is to die well in

For example, Jenkinson points to his work with children who were dying. Even at a very young age, children realize when they may or may not express their true feelings.

“They learned the code already; when their family was around they had to be OK,” he says. “They knew they couldn’t express sadness around their parents.”

A dying parent is often in the position of safeguarding the sanity of the people who aren’t dying, thereby shutting down their own feelings of sadness.

While the way of our going may be unknown, our departure from the planet is inevitable.

This is a concept that scares the hell out of many North Americans, says counsellor Stephen Jenkinson of a culture that, as much as possible, tries to avoid sadness by adopting the message of Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry Be Happy.”

But this attitude neither prepares us to die nor to cope with the death of a loved one.

This is something Jenkinson will discuss in his return engagement to Salmon Arm, at the invitation of the Shuswap Hospice Society, on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 21 and 22.

Jenkinson maintains that living with dying, be it your own or someone else’s, and loving life in the process, is a skill that has to be learned.

In the North American culture, grief is seen as an affliction, “a misery that intrudes into the life we deserve, a rupture of the natural order of things, a trauma” that requires management and a process to follow in order to recover.

OPINION Welcome defeat of election gag law At least one of the election gag laws has been thrown out.

The B.C. Court of Appeal has decided that an attempt by the provincial government to control free speech prior to a provincial election isn’t constitutional. This after the government tried several times to restrict how much money third parties can spend in the 60-day window before an election campaign begins. An attempt by Victoria to cut that down to 40 days didn’t work either.

Governments and political parties have interfered in the election process far too much. Elections are not the property of politicians — they are the property of citizens. They are the one chance that citizens have to determine who is in power, what policies will be brought in and what changes can be worked towards.

Yet at the federal and provincial level, election spending has been restricted for years.

Not only are individual candidates restricted in their spending, which does at least level the playing field a bit, but individuals, businesses, unions and interest groups have severe restrictions on how much they can spend to send messages to voters.

This is what the province was trying to do in the pre-election period — mainly to cut off messages from anti-government groups. Individuals, organizations and businesses should have every right to spend money before and during campaigns.

It’s good that the Court of Appeal has struck down restrictions during the pre-election period. It would be nice if a court would strike down the restrictions which apply during federal and provincial elections as well.

The only purpose they serve is to keep the election process dominated by political parties, and to severely restrict the rights of citizens during what should be a free-ranging debate.

In praise of edible wild plants “Ever eat a pine tree?”

That was a question posed

by Euell Gibbons in a Post Grape Nuts cereal commercial on national television back in the 1970s. Gibbons, was a writer, outdoorsman and proponent of eating edible wild plants and fungi. In his day, Gibbons made foraging for, cooking and eating wild food stuffs sound like fun. I was never convinced, but I have always enjoyed just walking in the woods – especially when I have an apple and an egg-salad sandwich or two in my pack.

I did read, at least in part, some of Gibbons’ books: Stalking the Wild Asparagus written in 1962, Stalking the Blue-Eyed Scallop in 1964 and Stalking the Healthful Herbs in 1966. Gibbons also wrote a number of articles for National Geographic Magazine, including one in the July 1972 issue which described a two-week stay on an uninhabited island off the coast of Maine where Gibbons, along with his wife Freda and a few family friends, relied solely on the island’s resources for sustenance. Tubers, leaves, flowers, seeds, nuts and the stems of many plants are edible, not to mention certain fungi. Some can be eaten raw while others are best boiled or roasted. Some can be used in soups or made into tea, while others are used in a variety of homeopathic cures and medicines. Most fast and processed foods were once natural – at least in part.

In the process of reading on the internet about wild foods, natural medicines and other edible products derived from nature, I discovered some pretty interesting facts.

Did you know that the young shoots of the spruce

tree are high in vitamin C or that Capt. Cook had a sugarbased spruce beer made onboard during his sea voyages to prevent scurvy among the crew. And, that certain wild plants such as the jack-inthe-pulpit, more commonly known as the Indian turnip, have high concentrations of oxalate compounds, also known as oxalic acid, that produces a sharp burning sensation in your mouth and throat and can damage the kidneys. The same plant can be safely eaten after simply baking, roasting or drying, which destroys the oxalate crystals. Or that willow bark, which provides salicylic acid from which aspirin was originally synthesized, was used as a pain reliever by the ancient Greeks some 2,500 years ago. There are more than 70,000 kinds of mushrooms, however, only a fraction – about 250 – are edible. The rest can cause illness or even death.

Death cap mushrooms are considered to be the numberone cause of illness and death when it comes to mushroomrelated poisonings in North America. And, despite its at-

tractive appearance, the “destroying angel” is the name of yet another mushroom that can kill you. This is why it’s so important to know exactly what you’re looking for when you go mushroom hunting in the woods.

And, although many of us buy them at the grocery store and willingly eat them, the common white mushroom is actually a fungi, and in more instances than not, fungi are something best left alone.

When your feet agree itchy, you’ve probably got Athlete’s Foot, which is caused by – you guessed it – a fungus. Fungi and the spores from fungi can be nasty little things. In some cases they can even be deadly.

While I’ve never eaten a pine tree or really gotten into the whole foraging for and eating of wild plants and fungi thing, I have begun to appreciate a more natural diet. I just figure there’s less chance of Escherichia coli, better known as E. coli bacteria, from fish I catch in the lake or plants I grow in my own garden.

I wonder what pine nuts taste like?

SOUTH SHUSWAP Feasting on literary riches Sixty or so ravenous readers gathered at the Celista Hall Saturday, Sept. 29 to be treated to a literary feast, a book and CD-launch for three members of the Gracesprings Collective: longtime Shuswap resident and author Deanna BarnhardtKawatski; Kamloops writer and poet Alex Forbes; and emerging young songwriter/ musician Jes Kahili.

Barnhardt-Kawatski’s daughter, artist Natalia Vanessa, served as MC for the sparkling event. She also provided the original painting for the simple but dramatic cover of her mother’s newest book, Burning Man, Slaying Dragon.

Barnhardt-Kawatski read from her adventure narrative, which begins with the ominous words, “You voluntarily assume the risk of serious injury or death by attending.”

This pretty much sets the tone for the true and transformative tale, which merges her 2003 journey with (then) 23-year-old

daughter Natalia to the Burning Man Festival in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada with her own coming-of-age journey to India decades before.

It was a colourful and rich entree, providing some serious food for thought.

Next, Alex Forbes read from his slim new volume of poetry, Luminous Orange.

A light piece about Elvis Presley in Vancouver provided a delicious slice of entertainment.

To finish off the programmed portion of the event, guitarist Jes Kahili performed several compositions from his new CD, drifting down an open stream.

With the heartfelt renderings on his harmonica, Kahili offered the older crowd a nuanced sound bite of an early, soulful Dylan.

And his reflective, bitter-sweet lyrics and upbeat guitar style added yet another flavour for the under-40 crowd.

Club closes golf season Shuswap Lake Estates Golf & Country ended their golfing season with a bang, hosting their 2012 Club championships.

Winners of this year’s event were Terry Bateson, who claimed the role of men’s club champion, Roxanne Nish assumed the title of ladies club champion and Darlyne MacInnis became the new nifty niner club champion.

Journey into the Upper Seymour SHUSWAP PASSION Jim Cooperman

I first learned about the Upper Seymour during the summer of 1993. After an expedition into the Hunakwa Lake wilderness area, I stopped for dinner at the Seymour Arm Hotel and chatted with a logger who told me he was building a road into a forest with the biggest cedar trees he had ever seen. My first visit into the Upper Seymour was with forest service ecologist Dennis Lloyd and government staffer Dave Tudhope in the spring of 1994. We were truly astonished by the massive size of the trees in this rare interior rainforest.

During the next trip with fellow conservationists, I took a photo of the group surrounding the largest tree, the 3.65 metre diameter Seymour Giant, which was later presented in a frame to the Regional District Manager, Fred Baxter, during a meeting to resolve the ensuing conflict with the logging company that was planning to log this forest. That photo helped, as Baxter issued a moratorium that allowed the company to only log half the blocks.

After six years of intense advocacy, extensive land use planning negotiations and many trips there with various groups, the Upper Seymour River Valley be-

came a provincial park.

I have long wanted to return to the Upper Seymour as it has been over 10 years since our last visit. Besides wanting to check on the status of the giant trees, canoeing on the meandering river has long been on the to-do list.

At one time, we could drive into the ancient forest, as the company had built the roads and the landings before the moratorium was issued.

But the status of this access was unknown.

On September 18, four of us headed up to the Upper Seymour with two canoes and four mountain bikes. We arrived to hear wolves howling in the distance and found a camping area close to the river on the east side of the outof service bridge at 33 kilometres. There was also a trail into a perfect take-out just upstream prior to the start of some rapids. We then had to find a suitable spot to launch the canoes.

While the logging road parallels the river, any attempt to reach the river would be downhill through dense brush or extensive wetlands. As no perfect spot could be located, we chose a location at 48 kilometres that was closest to the river but required us to use a rope to lower the canoes down a steep hillside through devils club. Fortunately, we had a heavy-duty clipper to make a short trail through the brush and alders. The canoes were then ready to launch the following morning.

We knew the road into the ancient forest, which begins at 51 kilometres, was not passable by vehicle, so we placed our faith in the

Despite the thick brush, after just 45 minutes of biking, we entered the landing adjacent to the Seymour Giant, which is still healthy. Ferns as high as our shoulders filled the wide-open spaces between the giant trees and we were all ecstatic as we hiked to the river. One day, I hope to return to hike up the valley to the alpine, a journey that likely no one has ever accomplished.

As we had no idea how long it would take to canoe the river, we managed to get a very early start the following morning when we began the paddle in the cool mist. There were light rapids to negotiate in the upper section, but the river is shallow and thus safe. The trip was fantastic, with amazing views of wetlands, mountains, and glaciers.

We encountered only four sweepers, which required short, easy portages.

The sandy shoreline was littered with moose and wolf tracks and there were many signs of beaver. Farther down the valley there are huge oxbows filled with wetlands and small lakes. We stopped at one

and hiked into the area to see a massive beaver lodge and take photos of the wetland with the reflection of the mountains in the still water.

Near the end of the valley, we were able to canoe into a small lake attached to the river that was exquisitely serene.

It only took us fivehours to canoe the route, including our stops for lunch and breaks. Even the take-out was enjoyable, as we carried the canoes out along the trail in another stand of massive trees. Is Romney one of the 47 per cent?

GLOBAL VIEWS Gwynne Dyer It has always been hard for people with strong opinions to tolerate the discipline of electoral politics, which demands that they never speak their minds in public. Say what you really think, and you are bound to alienate some of the votes that you need to win.

But it’s getting harder: even at private gatherings, today’s politicians are likely to be secretly video-recorded, so they must never reveal their true opinions.

The latest victim of this rule is Mitt Romney, the Republican candidate for the U.S. presidency. He needed to feed some red meat to the people who had paid $50,000 a head to attend a fundraiser in May in Florida. Most of them doubtless believed that poor Americans are shiftless, Palestinians are evil and Iranians are crazed fanatics, and they were not paying to have their views challenged. Still, he should have been more careful.

Blaming the failure of 19 years of negotiation to bring a peace settlement in the ArabIsraeli dispute entirely on the Palestinians was not going to get him in trouble at home. “The Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace,” he said, which would be

seen as a distortion of the truth in most parts of the world, but it does no harm to Romney domestically. Indeed, lots of Obama voters think that too.

Same goes for the bizarre scenario he drew about the alleged threat from Iran. “If I were Iran – a crazed fanatic, I’d say let’s get a little fissile material to Hezbollah, have them carry it to Chicago or some other place, and then if anything goes wrong, or America starts acting up, we’ll just say, ‘Guess what? Unless you stand down, why, we’re going to let off a dirty bomb.’”

This is only one or two steps short of expressing a fear of werewolves, but in the United States this sort of discourse is routine.

The US Department of Defense regularly uses equally shoddy and cynical arguments to justify its huge budget.

Romney will not get into any trouble with the electorate for this “gaffe”.

Where it all went wrong was when he said, “There are 47 per cent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what,” referring to the Americans who don’t pay income tax. “There are 47 per cent who are with (Obama), who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.”

The audience at the fundraiser obviously

believes that, and it’s pretty likely that Romney believes it himself, but it is simply not true.

If all of the 47 percent of Americans who do not pay income tax automatically vote for Barack Obama and the Democratic Party, then the Republicans can never win an election.

At least not unless everybody who pays income tax votes Republican, which seems pretty unlikely.

It was especially reckless of Romney to couch the whole discourse in terms of who pays taxes or doesn’t.

This from a man who has refused to release more than the past two years of his own tax returns. Why endure all the criticism about not releasing the past five years, say, if there was nothing to hide in the returns for the preceding years? Like, maybe, the possibility that Romney paid no tax at all in those previous returns.

The people who pay no taxes in the United States are the very poor and the very rich, and Romney certainly falls into the latter category.

If he paid no tax at all in 2007, 2008 and 2009, say, he would have fallen into the 47 percent in those years. So should we conclude that he voted for Obama in 2008?

Probably not, and we can feel a certain sympathy for a man whose supposedly private remarks, shaped to appeal to an ultra-rich and ultra-conservative audience, have been dragged into the public domain. But he should have known better. Almost invisible to him, there was another group of people in that room who were not rich at all: the people who waited on the tables of the mighty.

It was almost certainly one of those helots who took the video of his talk. They are getting in everywhere.

Salmon Arm council should know more about the fate of the city’s request for a highway intersection camera come December.

Last week, Mayor Nancy Cooper and city administrator Carl Bannister spoke with insurance corporation representatives about long-standing request.

Cooper says ICBC wants to complete a study to determine the best course of action for the city. She says they feel it is possible there may be better options, noting that cameras are not infallible, particularly in winter when weather and dirt can obscure licence plates.

“I asked a timeline on this

and the ICBC representative… said they will bring a draft report to a regular council meeting in December,” Cooper explained.

The conference call from ICBC didn’t come out of the blue. It was arranged right after Cooper and Salmon Arm council met with B.C. Attorney General Shirley Bond at the recent Union of B.C. Municipalities convention. This meeting was arranged to discuss specifically the hoops Salmon Arm continues to go through to obtain an intersection camera, despite being told at one point that it was going to happen.

Community reaps benefits

This year, a mission of the Shuswap Community Foundation is to create a smart and caring community.

In a spirit of community-building generosity, the foundation last week disbursed discretionary grants totalling $65,025 and $106,695 in agency and donordirected grants for a grand total of $171,720.

The foundation has, over the 15 years of its existence, disbursed more than $1 million to charitable organizations throughout the Shuswap.

In her president’s report, Karen Angove called this a significant milestone and a major accomplishment.

Other highlights Angove noted were the McGuire Lake Memorial Walkway, created in partnership with the City of Salmon Arm and seven new family funds.

The walkway will become the designated community location to celebrate life’s milestones, such as significant birthdays and anniversaries to fondly remember a loved one.

Each 12” X 24” brick purchased for placement in the walkway includes a donation to

the foundation’s walkway fund, which will fund community-based charitable programs, projects and services within the Shuswap area in perpetuity.

“Our permanent capital fund has grown to almost $5 million,” she reported, noting the foundation also boasts a new website and, “in a difficult economic climate, sustainable, better than average returns on investments.”

Diet and mental health LIVING WELL We all have heard that a healthy diet can make us physically healthier but can it also make us mentally healthier?

We know that mental health disorders can affect diet and nutrition.

Some drugs used to treat mental illnesses can change appetite, the taste of food, or cause erratic eating patterns.

The social or economic issues that can accompany mental illness can make it difficult to purchase, prepare or store healthy food.

When food intake is poor adequate nutrition may not be provided and this can lead to other medical complications.

So if mental health can affect our diet, can our diet affect our mental health?

In other words, can a healthy diet improve our over-all mental well being or perhaps help treat mental illness?

This is a question that warrants further exploration.

I worked with a school involved in a farm-to-school project.

Local farmers would grow produce for a salad bar that was made available to all students for a nominal fee.

The school principal and staff were very committed to the project and as a nutritionist I assumed it was because the students learned to love vegetables and had improved their nutritional intake. Alas, while this was true, the principal told me that one of the biggest reasons the school wanted to see the program continue was because they found the students behaved better and were more attentive after eating healthy lunches.

An inner city housing society I worked with wanted to pilot a food program for their clients with mental illnesses.

Most of their clients did not have access to a kitchen for cooking or even a fridge to store food.

Eating healthy was often a low priority for their clients and eating alone was common. The society provided nutritious meals and snacks to clients in a group setting. Participants were encouraged to cook together and participate on grocery shopping outings.

“..It’s safe to say that a healthy diet has an important role to play in helping us all feel better both physically and mentally.”

During the pilot period, clients who participated in the program reported that they felt better and staff reported that they responded to fewer crises at the centre.

A review done in 2006 by Sustain, an organization in the United Kingdom that advocates food and agriculture policies and practices to enhance health and welfare, and the Mental

Health Foundation reported that although there is no magic nutrient for mental health and well-being, there are important nutrients for brain development and function.

These nutrients only work if a wide range of other nutrients are also available in the right amounts and in the right proportion to one another, also known as a healthy diet.

Further research is being done to determine the exact role diet can play in mental well being but it’s safe to say that a healthy diet has an important role to play in helping us all feel better both physically and mentally.

Film focuses on waste reduction The Columbia Shuswap Regional District is hoping to inspire people to reduce waste with The Clean Bin Project, showing at the Salmar Classic Theatre Sunday, Oct. 21.

This documentary chronicles the year-long effort of two people to produce zero waste by avoiding any new and packaged material goods. “This documentary is really entertaining as well as inspiring,� says CSRD waste reduction facilitator Carmen Fennell. “People might not be ready to go without buying anything for a year, but it will make them aware of all the packaging and unnecessary waste that goes into the landfill.�

The documentary shows, often in humorous ways, how challenging it can be to reduce waste, but how these challenges were overcome in everyday settings, such as when grocery shopping. “The couple really gets into composting, recycling everything, and even learning how to make a lot of things themselves, like bread and laundry soap.�

There is no cost to attend, but the CSRD is inviting people to bring donations to the local food bank. Show time

Seymour forestry road closed Travellers are advised the Seymour West Forest Service Road will be permanently closed at 34 kilometres starting Thursday, Oct. 18, due to the removal of a bridge.

The Seymour West FSR is a dead-end road about 25 kilometres

north of Seymour Arm. The bridge is unsafe and must be removed to ensure the safety of travellers on the road.

The bridge will not be replaced.

Upper Seymour River Provincial Park is in the area, and one entrance to the park will no longer be ac-

cessible from Seymour West FSR. All other park access points, including those from 1100 FSR, will still be open for use.

“There’s certainly things like bocce and curling with teams of four, and individual sports like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, track and field, golf – those are all individual sports and, quite frankly, if you have one athlete and one coach, that’s a program. That child is worth running it for.”

CHASE Flu clinics to open next week

Flu season is approaching and public health nurses across Interior Health are gearing up for the launch of this year’s influenza (flu) vaccination campaign.

Public flu clinics will begin providing flu shots next week in the Chase/Shuswap area on a drop-in basis.

“There are many myths and misconceptions about the flu shot, so it’s important for people to get accurate information to help them stay healthy,” says Dr. Rob Parker, medical health officer with Interior Health.

“For example, the flu shot cannot give you the flu. The vaccine used in B.C. contains dead influenza viruses that cannot cause infection.”

Influenza is a highly contagious infection and can be very serious, especially for those with heart, lung and other health problems. In years when influenza is widespread in B.C., hundreds of people may die from it or complications such as pneumonia.

“The two most important ways to protect yourself from getting the flu are to wash your hands frequently and get your flu shot,” says Parker. “Flu vaccinations are a proven, safe and effective way to reduce your chances of getting the flu. The flu shot also lessens the severity of symptoms for those who do get the flu.”

The flu shot is free of charge for British Columbia residents who are 65 years and older, as well as their caregivers and household contacts, all children age six to 59 months of age, household contacts and caregivers of infants age zero to 59 months of age, children

# Interior Health is preparing to launch this year’s flu vaccine. and adults with chronic health conditions and their household contacts, aboriginal people, children and youths six months to 18 years, with conditions treated for long periods of time with aspirin or ASA and their household contacts, residents of nursing homes and other chronic-care facilities, pregnant women who will be in their third trimester during influenza season and their household contacts (pregnant women who are in other highrisk groups can be immunized at any time during the pregnancy), people who are very obese, health-care and other care providers in facilities and community settings who are capable of transmitting influenza disease to those at high risk of influenza complications, people who provide essential community services (first responders, corrections workers), inmates of provincial correctional institutions, people who work with live poultry and/or swine, individuals who provide care or service in potential outbreak settings with high-risk such as crews on ships.

“Everyone can benefit from a flu shot.

Even if you don’t become severely ill, getting the flu can mean several missed days of school or work and you may pass it on to someone who is at greater risk,” says Parker. “The flu shot is anywhere from 60 to 90 per cent effective in preventing influenza, and if you don’t get it you can’t spread it.”

People not eligible for the free flu vaccine through the publiclyfunded program should contact their physician, local pharmacy, walkin clinic, travel clinic or private provider.

Residents of the North Shuswap can get their vaccinations at the North Shuswap Community Hall on Monday Oct. 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The clinic will be at the Chase community hall Tuesday, Oct. 16 and 17 from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1:15 until 3:30 p.m. Those whose last name begins with a letter from ‘A’ to ‘L’ are asked to go to the hall on Oct. 16; those whose last name begins ‘with M’ to ‘Z’ can get their shot on the 17th.

Firefighters urge prevention

The Chase Volunteer Fire Department is working hard to spread the word on fire prevention and safety throughout the community.

The volunteer firefighters kicked off Fire Prevention Week by conducting two fire drills at Haldane Elementary School, as well as one at Chase Secondary. Chase Fire Chief Brent Chamberlain says the drills, designed to teach the students the quickest and safest routes out in case of a fire, were a great success.

“They always go well, especially with the little kids – they like it,” said Chamberlain.

ment will be stretching their fire awareness programs into next week as well by hosting a series of events.

Chamberlain says members of his crew will be taking Haldane students to the fire hall at about 9:30 Monday morning.

“We will go through how to prevent fires, what things cause fires,

as well as how fires can be dangerous or safe,” said Chamberlain.

The students will also get a chance to see the fire trucks up close and get a tour of the station.

The elementary school will also be picking one student from each class to be ‘fire chief for a day.’

The student will get to

go for a ride in the fire truck, as well as go out for lunch with some local firefighters.

On Oct. 21, the Chase department will be hosting an open house for the community from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This, says Chamberlain, will give residents a chance to meet their local firefighters.

The crew will be doing demonstrations throughout the day, as well as guided tours of the hall and trucks.

Hotdogs or smokies, as well as pop, will be available by donation.

Chamberlain is also planing on spending some time throughout the week performing fire inspections and stopping in at local businesses as a way to continue to spread the word on fire prevention.

punched the driver in the head numerous times, causing visible injuries. The suspects robbed the driver of about $170 as well as an airport tag before fleeing on foot.

Police nab one in Kamloops taxi robbery Chase RCMP have arrested one man for robbing a Kamloops taxi driver on Sept. 26, and now are looking for his female accomplice.

On Oct. 4, Police arrested Anthony Isaac Sauls, 31, of Chase. He is now charged with one count of robbery and one count of breaching conditions, and will make his first court appearance on Oct. 4.

Also charged with the robbery is Jerilyn Marjorie Johnny, 24, of Chase. Johnny is not currently in custody,

Chase Heat faces tough competition on the road in weekend action The Chase Heat hit the road Friday morning, Oct. 5, to take on the Beaver Valley Nighthawks that evening.

In the Beaver Valley arena things got off to a great start for Chase, with Kurtis Johnson and then Shelby Kostyshen putting the puck in the Nighthawks’ net.

In the second frame, the Hawks came back with two of their own. The third period came and went with no action on the board, pushing the contest into overtime. With 54 seconds left in the first overtime, the Hawks were able to put the visitors away for a 3-2 win.

Goalie Jacob Mattes was second star, stopping 36 of 39 shots.

On Saturday, Oct. 6, the Heat were in Castlegar to take on the Rebels.

The home team scored one in the first period, and followed up with three in the second period, prior to Shayne Woodland getting

one for the Heat. The Rebels then put in two more behind Mattes (who stopped 38 of 44 shots) for a 6-1 victory.

On Sunday the Heat headed up Highway 3A to Nelson, where they faced off against the Leafs in an afternoon contest. No game summary was available at press

time but the Leafs walked away with a 7-0 victory.

Stiff competition for a long road trip on Thanksgiving Weekend.

Next up is a home game today Friday, Oct. 12 versus the Revelstoke Grizzlies. Game time is 7 p.m.

EDITH CAVELL (BOWERMAN) THOMPSON June 1916 - October 2012 Edith, age 96, passed away on October 02, 2012.

Beloved Mother of Cathie (Winston) Pain of Salmon Arm, Ann Momentoff of London,Ontario and three grandsons Jason Pain, Sean Pain and Matthew Momentoff.

LANG, BERNARD ‘BUNNY’ CALVIN 1929 - 2012 Bernard Calvin Lang passed away peacefully on September 29, 2012 at the Piccadilly Care Center in Salmon Arm, BC. Born March 26, 1929, on Easter Sunday, in Regina, Saskatchewan - he was fondly known as Bunny his entire life.

With his parents, June & Mathew Lang, the family moved west in 1941 and settled in Hammond, BC. Bunny married Beverley Edna Lawrence on June 30th, 1950 and in 1956 moved to what became the family home on the Alouette River in Haney, BC where they created wonderful memories for friends and family.

Bunny had an illustrious career that included the Hammond and Ruskin Mills, Highway Auto Wreckers, First Avenue Shell Station, Hemlock Valley Ski Resort, Trans Canada Glass (Maple Ridge), and Rainbow Glass (Chase/Salmon Arm).

He loved home cooking and at 82 was still making his own perogies and cabbage rolls. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, a good hockey game, and always had a wealth of projects on the go.

Predeceased by his wife Beverley (2004), his brother, Harold ‘Bud’ Lang (1968), his sister-in-law Charlotte Price (2011), and his son-in-law, Michael J.Mulholland (1998).

He is lovingly survived by his daughters Carol Hamilton of Mission, BC, Caryn Stewart (Phil) of Blind Bay, BC, Penny Richter (Wolfgang) of Port Coquitlam, BC and Valerie Lang (Tad Donnan) of Bainbridge Island, USA, and his many grandchildren, great grand-children, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Bunny was a loving husband, grandpa, and friend to all. He was a great Dad! He will be fondly remembered for his ‘character’ status, his colorful personality, his ingenuity to do such things as fix a fan belt with a pair of pantyhose, turn a riding lawn mower into a hot rod, and his ability to tell engaging stories about his eventful life.

Bunny will be missed by his family, by his friends in the coffee shops, and all his friends gathered along the way.

MARION BILDFELL Marion Bildfell (nee Lafrentz) of Camrose, AB was born in Halbrite, Sask. on April 6, 1923, the fifth child in a family of eleven.

She proudly served in the R.C.A.F. from 1943 to 1946. She married Albert Bildfell in Foam Lake, Sask. in 1948. Together they moved to Guelph, Ontario where he attended Veterinary College. In 1960 they moved to Vegreville, AB where they lived for 27 years and raised two daughters. In 1987 they retired and moved to Sorrento, B.C. In 2000 they moved to Calgary, AB and later that year Albert passed away from ALS. Marion moved to Rose Alta Lodge in Camrose, AB in 2007 and remained in Camrose until her passing on Sept. 30, 2012 at the age of 89 years.

She is lovingly remembered by one daughter Deidra (Steve) Howe; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; two sisters Hazel (Keith) Sprecken and Vicky Shaw; one brother Melvin (Irene) Lafrentz. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Albert Bildfell; one daughter Kathryn; six brothers and one sister.

An inurnment service will be held at Foam Lake, Sask. on a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the University of Saskatchewan – Dr. Albert Bildfell Bursary.

CANNEFAX, EDWARD THOMAS • 1935 - 2012 Ed passed away peacefully at Bastion Place on Monday, October 1, 2012 at the age of 76 years.

He was born in Douglas, Arizona on November 22, 1935 to Frankie and Acie Cannefax.

Edward is survived by his loving wife Karen and companion Dusty.

Ed worked both in the United States and Canada. He was a square dance caller for 30 years in Mexico, USA, and Canada. His main club was “Shuswap Squares:” A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall, 60 1st Street SE, Salmon Arm, BC. LARSEN, RODNAY EDWARD With deep, deep, sadness we announce the passing of Rodnay Edward Larsen, at the age of 73. He was born in Nelson, B.C. in 1939. He is survived by his wife and best friend Pat of 57 years and his five beautiful children and many grandchildren.

Rod was a devoted family man and worked hard to provide – no frills, just unconditional love to family and friends.

Rod’s life revolved around his family, especially his wife whom he expressed over and over how much he loved. He will be so missed by her and his two sons and three daughters: Don, Brenda (Bill Ens), Brian (Shelley Leduc), Sheridan, Karen (Ken Leduc) and his only sibling, brother Albert (Vivian).

One of his many gifts were grandchildren whom he so adored. He so loved it when he heard them coming into his home as it gave him great joy receiving all those hugs. They loved receiving their bear hug from Grandpa and hearing his wonderful, humorous, and informative stories. He had a big belly laugh that all enjoyed. He leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 3 great grand daughters.

Rod was predeceased by his parents, Nels and Mary Larsen, and his grandson, Nicholas Cole Larsen (2011).

In his early years Rod was involved in the Chase Community on many different fronts. He was a member of the Elks, served 12 years as Fire Chief, worked with the Boy Cubs and Scouts, taught First Aid, and worked with M.J. Reid Co, and Adams Lake Lumber. One of the things many people do not know is that Rod obtained a pilot’s license and enjoyed many years of flying small aircrafts.

Rod will be deeply missed, but his stories will live on in our hearts, memories, and conversations.

A celebration of Rod’s life was held on Sat. Oct.6th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Chase Community Hall.

LORETTA MARY HOHMANN “Nana” 1938 - 2012 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Loretta Mary Hohmann announces her passing at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 73 years of age.

Loretta was born on October 23, 1938 in Grand Falls, Newfoundland and moved to British Columbia in 1953. She met Edward in Chilliwack and they were married in 1957. They raised five children together in various locations throughout British Columbia. Edward was a logger and they lived a logging family lifestyle. They lived in Salmon Arm for quite some time, and it is where Ed passed away. The last 7 years of Loretta’s life were spent in Cranbrook where she loved the location and enjoyed the beauty and the lifestyle. Loretta’s sudden and unexpected passing was a shock to all that knew her and she will be sadly missed.

Loretta is survived by her brothers Kevin and Michael; her sister Mary; her children Michael, Len (Karen); Kelly (Silvia), Heidi, Loriann (Michael); 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Ed Hohmann; brothers John and Gerald and sisters Selina and Rita.

A visitation for Loretta was held in the McPherson Funeral Home Family Room in Cranbrook on Friday, October 5, 2012 from 10:30 am until 12:00 pm. Loretta ‘s memorial service was held at 1:00 pm on Friday, October 5, 2012 at McPherson Funeral Home Chapel in Cranbrook.

FAMILY SCHOOL LIAISON WORKER The Family School Liaison Worker is a yearly contract position under the direction of the First Nations Education Council (FNEC).

This position will serve students who attend schools in the local school district for the 2012/2013 school year. The schools served are identified by School District 83 District Principal of Aboriginal Education, based on priorities, concerns and issues and according to the terms of the Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement.

The overall goal of the Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement is to increase academic success for Aboriginal students by providing programs and services to enhance their social, academic and cultural needs.

This additional support is being provided to meet the social and emotional needs of students and families which will be supported within the school setting and through home visits. This is to be done by providing services to families who may have difficulty in accessing other services available within the community.

The first aspect of this position is to work on a one-to-one basis with individual students, small groups, parents and/or families.

This generally involves immediate intervention for problemsolving, or short-term counselling situations, with specific goals related to areas of concern. Some areas are drug and alcohol, self-confidence, communication skills, dealing with emotions, conflict resolution or parenting skills. This position will include working with families in conjunction with the Local Bands and outside agencies attending school base team meetings and other relevant meetings pertaining to students/families.

Qualifications would include a Bachelor of Social Work Degree with a working knowledge or experience with Aboriginal communities.

There is one full time position for a one school year contract with terms to be negotiated based on qualifications and experience.

Reports and updates will be provided to the FNEC and/or the District Principal on a regular basis.

This position will be reviewed upon completion.

Harvesting gardens for the food banks In 2011 the Daybreak Rotary club grew vegetables for the local food banks. In the fall a request was made for more garden space.

From all the gardens a

total of 975 lbs of potatoes, 25 lbs of beans, 34 lbs of beets, 38 lbs of carrots 17 lbs of cucumbers, 16 pounds of parsnips and 22 lbs of tomatoes were harvested!

During Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7 to 13, Columbia Shuswap Regional District Fire Services co-ordinator Kenn Mount would like to remind people to make sure their smoke detectors are working.

“Most homes have smoke detectors, but it’s surprising how many people don’t remember to test them regularly to make sure they’re working.

If they’re not functioning, they’re not going to do any good if there’s a fire,” says Mount. “The Canadian statistics show that without a working smoke alarm, your chances of not surviving a fire increase by 74 per cent.”

It is the first line of defence, but it’s just as important that all members of the family know what to do when the alarm goes off.

“It’s a good idea to have a family escape plan in case of a fire in your home. Practise the plan and make sure your children understand what they should do if they hear the warning sounds from the smoke detector.

The escape plan should include a meeting point outside the home.”

When you practise your safety plan, make sure you practise using an alternate way to get out of the house in case one exit is blocked.

“Fires can double every 30 seconds so it’s important that everyone knows to stay low to the ground and start working their way toward one of their two ways out.

Practising this as a family is really important since everyone will be better prepared to deal with a fire event at home.”

Light recycling expands in B.C.

British Columbia is lighting up recycling circles. The province has introduced Canada’s first comprehensive program to recycle all lighting products without charge.

Known as LightRecycle, the non-profit program known as LightRecycle, has accepted residential-use fluorescent lights at collection sites across the province since 2010.

Shuswap residents can return their evidential use lights to Rona and Salmon Arm Home Building Centre. There are, as of yet, no Salmon Arm sites for used residential lighting fixtures, but flashlights, table lamps and chandeliers can be taken to centres in Armstrong, Vernon, Kamloops or Kelowna.

For information on the types and quantities of fixtures accepted, visit www.lightrecycle.ca.

There are more than 200 collection sites for consumers to drop off their burnt-out lights (bulbs and tubes) and more than 80 collection sites across the province for consumers to drop off their old or broken lighting fixtures. There is no charge to drop off lighting products for recycling.

To make up for this, Hudson and the Bible Church will be hosting its second Uniformed Services Appreciation service, Sunday, Oct. 14, 10:30 a.m. at 326 Kappel Street in Sicamous.

Hudson says the service will include a number of keynote speakers, including Mayor Darrell Trouton, as well as service people who will share some of their personal experiences.

The service is open to anyone, and is an opportunity to say thank you to the men and women who serve the community and region.
