The British Columbia Aviation Council (BCAC) today announced the winners of the Aviation Awards for 2012. The awards will be presented at

the October 25 Silver Wings Awards gala at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) South Terminal along with $10,000 in scholarships to deserving students in the fields of flying, engineering and

aviation management in programs from all over British Columbia.

The Canadian Rockies International Airport in Cranbrook has won the William Templeton Award for aviation market development,

community outreach and environmental initiatives.

The Entrepreneur of the Year Award went to Conair Aviation, The Back and Bevington Air Safety Award went to Victoria Harbour

EK conservation program expands Local conservation groups are applauding news that the East Kootenay Conservation Program (EKCP) now includes the West Kootenay. This geographic expansion means that the renamed umbrella organization – now the Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) – will forge new partnerships and help focus activities around private land conservation in both the East and West Kootenay.

“For years now, many groups in the West Kootenay have looked at the conservation achievements of the EKCP and its partners and asked for something similar,” says Program Manager, Dave Hillary. “We’ve expanded our service area to meet this need, and are excited by the opportunities for the new Kootenay Conservation Program to assist local groups in conserving and stewarding important private land in the both East and West.”

Since its beginning in 2002, the EKCP has been working to support the conservation of private lands by building

partnerships throughout the East Kootenay, and more recently in the West Kootenay.

Within its expanded service area, the organization has facilitated the conservation of over 300,000 hectares of biological diverse and high value land, representing a conservation investment of over $100 million in the region.

“KCP knows the West is different from the East,” says Grant Trower, of Friends of the Lardeau River and also a public representative for the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (Columbia) Steering Committee. “The new KCP will be working on local conservation priorities, and supporting groups and agencies already working to sustain naturally functioning ecosystems,” says Grant, adding, “It’s logical for KCP to be working Kootenaywide to forge regional bonds since people who live here value the fish, wildlife and natural spaces that make this part of BC so special.”

Species like this rare Northern Leopard frog, and others, will benefit from new Kootenay-wide conservation efforts under the name of the recently-announced Kootenay Conservation Program, formerly the East Kootenay Conservation Program. one of several partners that recently announced the Nature Conservancy of Canada has purchased 306 acres (124 hectares) in the Creston Valley near Wynndel.

This land is home to endangered Northern Leopard frogs, at-risk Western Painted turtles, Townsend’s big-eared bats, and is a wildlife corridor for grizzly bears moving between the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges. A portion of the property will remain in agriculture, at the same time as conservation measures are

taken to safeguard atrisk plants and animals.

“Conservation of wildlife habitat and agricultural lands depends on a broad range of partners including forestry, farmers, governments, industry and others,” says Hillary.

“Our recent success in the Creston Valley is an excellent example of how diverse partners can work together to achieve important ecological, cultural and economic wins, that in the long run sustain the resilience of Kootenay communities.”

Calendar sales to help Street Angel Harley-Davidson of the Kootenays and Jason Wiersma Photography have teamed up to produce a 16 month calendar to raise money for the local operation Street Angel.

The calendar draws from the traditional pinup style with a modern twist. All women in the Calendar are from the East Kootenays who have volunteered to be a part of the project and Harley-Davidson of the Kootenays provided the initiative, space, merchandise and bikes for the shoots.

“We wanted to make a calendar that is sexy and fun. One that showcases the Harley-Davidson motorcycle and the beautiful women that live in the area,” Diane Pawlechko stated. “We knew that we wanted to raise money for a great cause and we knew that we had to make a product that was different than those produced before in the area, something that would sell and showcase a lifestyle.

Operation Street Angel was chosen because it is a program that not only

reaches out to the homeless but helps to rehabilitate those that are less fortunate.”

Photographer Jason Wiersma explained, “When shooting a pinup calendar it’s important for it to be comfortable, tasteful and sexy all at the same time. I really wanted to capture each girls personality and beauty and to produce the same quality of final product that would be scene in major metropolises.”

The Street Angel program was initiated in 2010 by the Ktunaxa Nation. Operation Street Angel assists Cranbrook’s street-involved people by providing outreach and guidance services. Between 80 and 100 people access it each day—and about 30 per cent of these are youth.

Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services is teaming up with NFPA to urge residents to “Have Two Ways Out!”, focusing on the importance of fire escape planning and practice.

Although preparing for the unexpected is difficult, reviewing the information below and taking action based on it to plan for a fire could save lives. Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services recommends the following tips for planning your family’s escape: If you have children and want to make this a family activity • Make a map of your home. Mark a door and a window that can be used to get out of every room.

• Choose a meeting place outside in front of your home. This is where everyone can meet once they’ve escaped. Draw a picture of your outside meeting place on your escape plan.

• Write the emergency telephone number for the fire department on your escape plan.

• Sound the smoke alarm and practice your escape drill with everyone living in your home.

• Keep your escape plan on the refrigerator and practice the drill twice a year or whenever anyone in your home celebrates a birthday.

If your family is all adults: • Walk through you home and identify two ways out of each room.

• Choose a meeting place outside in front of your home. This is where everyone can meet once they’ve escaped.

• Make sure everyone knows the emergency number for your local fire department.

• Practice your escape drill twice a year.

Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services 1st Annual Community Calendar ON SALE!

The 16 month Cranbrook Community Calendar developed in partnership with Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services, the Cranbrook Daily Townsman and Rocky Mountain Printers is to raise funds and awareness for the British Columbia Professional Firefighters Burn Fund and help promote the local area.

Fall Deer Mating Season Approaching; Residents Urged To Be Aware

Residents and visitors are advised to continue to exercise both caution and common sense this fall, as the late autumn deer mating (rutting) period begins. That is the message from the City of Cranbrook.

In the weeks leading up to the rut (into November and December) bucks increase their displays of dominance and indirect threats. A dominant buck typically circles a rival with deliberate steps; back arched, head low and tail flicking. Bucks can also display dominance by violently thrashing the bushes with their antlers.

“We are into a transition period, where some does with fawns remain wary and potentially aggressive toward humans with dogs,” says Mayor Wayne Stetski. “Now we will likely also see an increase of particularly aggressive acts from the local urban buck population. Residents are reminded to please give deer plenty of space to move or leave the area. Do not walk closer to the deer; find another route.”

• Stay open to dialogue. Explain your strategy to ensure the continuing existence of the business. This attitude should unite your personnel and motivate them to maintain or increase productivity.

• It is essential to talk to employees every time some new event has an impact on your business’s finances.

Proactive communication will stifle rumours and keep people concentrated on their work.

• Always be ready to listen. Facilitate communications from employees by creating letter boxes for anonymous messages and questions. This will encourage shy or hesitant employees to communicate with management. Establishing suggestion boxes is another positive step.

• Ask for help. Invite suggestions from your personnel regarding solutions to problems, new customers or even ideas for improving production procedures.

• Reinforce positive behaviour by promoting employees or giving them extra days off. Never tolerate negative behaviour within the business.

Following these steps will make sure you keep the employees you want for your business, while getting rid of the ones that are not as helpful.

This clever comedy was written by playwrights Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman and won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This years production is directed by Mary Hamilton and showcases some of Baker’s brightest and most hilarious young actors. The cast includes Desiree Lepine, Joelle Winkel, Trevor McGovern, Jayla Toorenburgh, Angus Liedtke and various students from grades 10-12 who have been hard at work since early September. They spend most of their time at home, but come into contact with the outside world through their daughter Alice. When she falls in love, her endearing, albeit mildly insane family decide to meddle in her love life, which causes some hysterical outcomes. Tickets are available at Key City Theatre: $15.00 for adults and $12.00 for students and seniors. Showtimes are 7:30pm on November 29th and 30th and 2:00pm on December 1st. A new season of music making is underway at Mount Baker. Under the direction of music teacher Evan Bueckert, the recording arts and music composition program is already in full swing as students begin to prepare and practice their own original music, to be released on their class compilation CD in January.

Our very own Good Ol’ Goats have been having a great season so far- their first album, “The Train”, has been released and is available at several locations in Cranbrook and Kimberley including The Choice, Lotus Books, Blast Beats and at the school music office.

The record will soon be available on iTunes.

The Mount Baker Music Department will feature several performance ensembles on stage this year, including a 50 piece junior concert band, a 75 piece senior concert band, a vocal jazz ensemble, a senior jazz band and a 120 voice concert choir.

When we started the league we had a vision to provide the opportunity for women to get together for a fun evening of hockey. A lot of players are Moms of hockey playing kids and they have watched the game but never had much chance to try it. Now they come out, develop skills and have a great time. We also have some younger players who have played minor hockey when they were teen-agers and now are in college here, or have finished post secondary school and are back in the area. We have some Mother-Daughter units out there and a few RSS

Grandmothers playing as well!

The skill level in the league is varied but the emphasis on sportsmanship means that the beginners enjoy it as well.

Referees are supplied by the league but they are fairly low key and any penalties called are taken by penalty shots so the play resumes quickly.

Cranbrook, and the surrounding area, has a rich history of women’s hockey and there are many women enjoying the game today. Come on out and give it a try!

Throughout the month of September, warm and sunny weather has kept us from looking too far into the future. With the first snowfall of the season last week, reality has set in - winter is on its way! Chances are, there are still some chores to do in your garden, such as raking leaves, winterizing trees and digging up your summer bulbs.

In our climate, many summer-blooming bulbs have to be dug up in the fall, as they will not survive our winter. This includes dahlias, gladioli and cannas, to name a few. These bulbs should be dug once the leaves have been darkened by frost.

They should not, however, be subjected to a hard freeze which turns the stem to mush.

Digging up dahlia tubers can be like digging for buried treasure. From the single tuber you planted last spring, you will now discover a clump of anywhere between 6 and 8 tubers has formed, each of which will grow into an identical dahlia the following year. Do not separate these tubers from the clump until next spring.

Cut the stems back to about 3 inches and carefully dig the roots with a garden fork or spade. Shake off any loose soil and bring the tubers inside to let them dry. This will help the moisture drain from the hollow stems and reduce the risk of rotting later. However, don’t allow the tubers to dry out completely. Check the tubers periodically throughout the winter and mist with water as necessary.

Once the tubers are dry, place them in shallow boxes or paper bags with dry peat moss, vermiculite or some other insulating material.

Store in a cool, moderately dry area where temperatures are between 1 and 10 degrees Celsius such as a basement, crawl space, unheated spare room or a moderately heated garage. Leave the bag or box open to encourage air circulation and prevent disease.

If you grow different varieties of dahlias, you want to clearly mark the individual tubers. You can either put them away in individual bags or boxes or tie a tag around the bundle, labelling it with the name of the variety (if you know it) or at least with the colour, height and size of flower.

This will help you next spring when you are planting them in your garden or if you are sharing them with friends.

It is also time to store the gladiolus corms. After digging them out, simply wash them off with the hose. You do not need to remove the tops now, in about a month from now, they will twist off easily. Give the corms a dusting of bulb dust to prevent bugs and disease and store them in a paper bag or packed between layers of newspaper in a cardboard box, in a cool, dry place in the basement.

Cut down the foliage of canna lilies, but it helps if you leave enough of the stalk to use as a handle. Knock as much soil as you can off the root stock back into the garden. You don’t have to worry about getting the bulbs totally clean – just get any big chunks of soil off. Separate the individual bulbs and let them dry in a frost-free space inside. Pack and store the canna bulbs as you would dahlia tubers.

In the spring, the canna clumps can be divided or planted as a clump. Be sure to include part of the old stem base in each division, since the new growth buds arise from the old stem. The tuberous roots of dahlias can be divided in the spring as well, but make sure each division has at least one eye. For gladiolus, twist off the old shrivelled corms before replanting them.

This may seem like a lot of work to go through for a flower, but these gorgeous plants will repay the little extra effort with a spectacular display of colour for many seasons to come.

Ina E. Robison 1928 - 2012 Ina E. Robison passed away on Saturday, October 6, 2012 in Cranbrook, British Columbia at 84 years of age.

Ina was born on August 6, 1928. She leaves behind her beloved daughter Joan Getten and grandson's Dale and Trevor.

Elizabeth June Gauer 1923 - 2012 It is with great sorrow that the family of Elizabeth June Gauer announces her passing on Thursday, October 4, 2012 in Cranbrook, British Columbia at 89 years of age.

June was born on May 24, 1923 in Fort William, Ontario. June and Bert were married in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 2, 1948 and arrived at a ranch near Bull River in time for Thanksgiving. They raised their two children and then moved to Cranbrook to enjoy retirement.

June's family was her life and her greatest joy was when everyone was together. She was a loving wife, mother, grandma, great grandma, sister, aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

June is survived by her son Ken Gauer, daughter Kathi (Ken) Sharpe, grandchildren Cody, David (Carlin), Aaron and Chris, grandson Carson, sister Isabelle Finley as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Bert Gauer, brothers Gideon and Jack Shortreed and sister Dorothy Tychie.

A visitation for June will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Thursday, October 11, 2012 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Her memorial service will be held at the Cranbrook United Church on Friday, October 12, 2012 at 10:00 am. Her Interment will be in Westlawn Cemetery.

David Gold 1920 - 2012 It is with deep sorrow that the family of David Gold announce of his passing. He passed away peacefully after a long, well lived life on Friday, October 5, 2012 at Joseph Creek Care Village in Cranbrook.

He was 92 years of age.

David was born on August 23, 1920 in Scotland. His greatest joys were his wife and his family. His main hobbies and interests in his younger years were hunting, fishing and hockey. He enjoyed golf, curling, gardening and music well into retirement. He was always a nature lover.

David is survived by his wife Pauline (nee Thomas) who was his life long partner of 69 years; children Greg (June) Gold of Nanaimo; Jeff (Joan) Gold of North Vancouver; Jill (Greg) Lee of Port Hardy; Robin (Lisa) Gold of Elkford; 11 grandchildren: Christy, Jenny, Scott, Ross, Ryan, Holly, Nicole, Erin, Lorraine, David and Thomas; as well as 10 great grandchildren: Noah, Celia, Nyla, Benjamin, Zoe, Daniel, Tanner, Sebastian, Adam and Marcus. He was predeceased by his daughter Diana Lee Gold (1950) and siblings Rachel Power, Art Gold, Marion Green and Sandy Gold.

A memorial service for David will be held at All Saints Anglican Church in Kimberley (520 -Wallinger Street) on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of David may do so to the charity of your choice.

Lyona Berndt (nee Robinson) April 21, 1925 - October 5, 2012 The family of Lyona Berndt sadly announces her passing at the FW Green Memorial Home in Cranbrook, BC after an eight year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Lyona was born in Dome Creek, BC and lived her entire life in British Columbia. She married Floyd Berndt in 1946 and they moved from the Prince George area to the Trail area in 1953.

Lyona was the Postmaster in the Montrose Post Office for many years, and was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Castlegar and the United Church in Fruitvale. She will be fondly remembered for her baking, particularly her delicious apple pies, her wonderful large garden and her love of walking.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Monica & Lionel Baker of Cranbrook; her grandsons Kirsh (Nicole) of Calgary, AB, Dave (Shawna) of Anaconda, Montana.

Also surviving, are her four great grandchildren, Melissa, Sienna, Amanda, and Maxton, her sister Myrtle Triol of Nelson, her sister-in-law Jean Robinson of Penticton, her brother & sister-in-law, Willis & Hazel Emde of Midale Saskatchewan, as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Floyd in 1985, her parents Harry & Martha Robinson, 10 siblings, sister and brother-in-laws.

Lyona moved to Cranbrook in 2005 and enjoyed her many trips to Montana, Calgary and Saskatchewan to visit relatives. One of her fondest memories was her trip to Ireland in 2007 with her daughter Monica and her niece Gayle Butler of Kimberley.

The family would like to give special thanks to the following for their personal attention, care, and love given to Lyona by the FW Green nursing staff, kitchen crew, cleaning crew, and recreation program workers. Your kindness did not go unnoticed, and will not be forgotten, also thanks to Dr. Witten and to Bernice Yurkoski .

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date with interment at Lakeview Cemetery in Kelowna, BC. The Kimberley Health Centre Society requires a Facilities Manager The Society is seeking a Facilities Manager to manage the maintenance and smooth operation of the Kimberley Health Centre. CVLCF funding is available for conservation projects that result in the reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide value for money through partnerships with other funders will have priority. Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit organization, First Nations band, or local government.

Unqualified groups or organizations may partner with a qualified organization. Multi-year projects are acceptable to a maximum three years.

A Technical Review Committee will review project proposals and make recommendations to the RDEK for final funding approval.

Closing dates for project submissions is midnight October 31, 2012. Projects specific to land acquisition and/or conservation covenants may be submitted at any time during the year.
