Rylonn Elliot of the Boundary “C” 4-H Club won Grand Champion Showman at the Provincial Winter Fair in Barrier last month. His brother Alec took Reserve Showman (second place). His mother, Shauna Blaine, says it involves a lot of work to come out on top. “You have to pick the right steer as a calf, feed it properly, know how to clip it to make it look good in the ring and finally you have to invest time training it to stand properly. “You have to train them or they kick at you,” explained Rylonn. “You use a stick to scratch their back to start with and, if you’ve done enough homework, they will walk right into their stand.” Rylonn was only three years old when he took his first heifer calf to the Rock Creek fair; he’s now 10 and a Grade 5 student at West Boundary Elementary and this year he took his 1,274 pound Maine X to the Rock Creek fair the week before the PWF.
