I always thought that a plane is a plane. I have flown in many Boeings, Airbuses, and the Concorde supersonic jet. I “hummingbirded” in a helicopter, I popped the clouds in Pipers, Cessnas and flew weird looking flying objects with crazy bush pilots. That was it, I thought, I just need to do military jets and the space shuttle to get it all.

Then I met Andrzej Roznowski.

Roznowski owns Vancouver Island Soaring Centre ( www.visc.ca ) based here, in the Alberni Valley. We chatted about planes and he talked passionately about gliders. I wanted to know more and he proposed to bring me up there, soaring in the sky.

When I arrived at the Port Alberni airport earlier this summer, Roznowski proudly showed me the glider in which I would reach the birds’ world.

The glider is small and looks like a bobsleigh that had grown long and narrow wings— surely the reason the maximum passenger’s weight is 110 kg (242 pounds).

In 30 minutes, I learned a great deal about altitude, speed and glide ratio, about thermal

waves, ridge lift, and wave lift. I grasped the vivid image that the air space where I would soon be is an ocean full of invisible waves and currents.

You don’t think too much about it when you are in a Boeing, but in a glider it is vital knowledge, as they soar like a kite on these waves.

While waiting for the little red and white

Piper fixed wing plane that drags the glider off the land, I met Michael Gye, a consulting arborist from Sidney, B.C. A jolly 85, he was learning how to pilot a glider.

With the size of the smile on his face, I can tell that he shared the same passion for flying as Roznowski, Collin Pazdzior and Eric Perreault (all pilots and instructors).

After 15 minutes of soaring, Gye and Perreault landed perfectly.

It was now my turn.

The white glider waited patiently on the landing strip, already linked by the orange umbilical cord to the Piper that would – Amyah Labreche soon gently drag us up to the sky.

I slid into the tummy of the plane, into the passenger seat. Roznowski showed me how to attach the safety belt then took the pilot’s place, sitting behind me.

The Plexiglas cockpit closed over my head. I was ready and thrilled.

No rain, no mushrooms City closer to buying AGRICULTURE: | Pickers in danger of losing entire season.

The weather is beautiful on Central Vancouver Island this fall, but don’t tell that to Keith Hunter or the people he serves.

They’re looking for rain, soon, and lots of it.

Hunter is the driving force behind First Nations Wildcrafters in Port Alberni, which buys natural products collected from Island forests.

One of the main products he sells is chanterelle mushrooms, but it’s starting to look like there could be at best a poor season for mushrooms, or maybe even no real season at all.

And every day the sky remains cloudless and the ground stays dry makes that possibility ever more real.

To date, Hunter hasn’t purchased a single chanterelle from area pickers, a far cry from the season three years

“That was considered early,” he said. “Last year we didn’t start until midSeptember, because we were waiting on quality. When they come up early they can be dry and we sell into the produce market, so they want shelf life.”

The end of the

yellow chanterelle season comes when the ground freezes and Hunter noted there has been frost in the Alberni Valley over the last couple of nights, although he stressed it’s not enough to hurt the mushrooms — yet.

“I doubt the frost penetrated to the forest floor,” he said.

“The canopy tends to protect them.”

Hunter noted that while pickers can find mushrooms until early November, he cuts off his buying before that, as the mushrooms to be found tend to be either old or waterlogged, or both.

“There comes a point where the pickers are spending more time looking for the quality than the quantity and there comes a point where it doesn’t work for them anymore,” he said.

That morning frost, and the sunny weather that follows it are not good signs and he knows it. His company requires not just mushrooms, but good, high quality mushrooms, and while casual pickers may be able to hunt up enough for their limited needs, the commercial harvest — and the commercial harvesters who rely on the added income it generates, could be entirely out of luck.

“I don’t know if there will be a season for the commercial harvest,” Hunter said.

“It’s like farming, I guess. Some years are good years and some not so good.

“This year it’s not looking good.”

The city’s deal for the Catalyst Paper Corp. lagoon has taken another step towards closing.

Port Alberni city councillors authorized city staff to apply for a $5.75 million loan from the province’s Municipal Finance Authority to purchase the lagoon.

The lagoon is

located on the Somass Estuary, across the river from the mill, and sits on land owned by the Port Alberni Port Authority.

Catalyst ceased using its lagoon after they upgraded the Alberni mill with a sludge treatment facility.

The facility will enable the city to meet new stringent federal and provincial effluent standards.

The loan would be paid out over two years: $5 million in the first year and $750,000 in the second year. The loan amortization rate would be over 30 years to give the city flexibility to pay it back earlier if it could.

Council’s approval is one of several steps that need to be taken for the loan to be approved.

The City of Port Alberni will be on the hook for costs to remove sludge from the lagoon it is purchasing from Catalyst Paper Corp., city manager Ken Watson said.

The development came as a result of a question from Coun.

Hira Chopra during discussion about the loan authorization for purchase of the lagoon.

“How much is it going to cost for removing the sludge?”

Chopra asked.

Watson replied that there were several unknown variables that prevented him from disclosing an exact dollar figure.

It’s not known yet how much sludge there is in the lagoon, Watson said. As well, the removal cost will likely be based on a per tonne basis, but until it’s known how much there is, a dollar figure can’t be calculated.

Sludge removal was done at least a decade ago, he said, and is regular if infrequent maintenance.

The city knew about the sludge during negotiations with Catalyst. “It wasn’t a hidden thing or just sprung on us,” Chopra said after the meeting.

What is known is that the removal cost isn’t part of the $5.75 million loan the city is applying for to purchase the lagoon and land for a new truck route, he said.

Close call in Falls Street fire FIRE: | Woman’s decision to visit a friend saved her from sleeping through fourplex blaze.

A last-minute decision to go and visit a friend likely saved Port Alberni resident Mary Brawn from burning to death or being severely injured in a fire, she said.

Brawn and her daughter Rosemary were residents in a Falls Street fourplex that was heavily damaged by fire on Monday night.

Brawn’s unit was among the two that suffered the most damage.

She stood crying outside the unit on Tuesday morning. Her residence was located only one metre in front of her. Pictures of her mother and daughter hung on a wall just inside the broken front window.

But the unit was behind yellow fire scene tape and she was unable to retrieve her belongings. “I just want some of my stuff. There’s pictures of my mom and Rose

Firemen from Port Alberni, Beaver Creek and Sproat Lake brought the blaze under control within a half hour and remained on the scene until midnight mopping up. There were no fatalities or injuries reported, Beaver

Two of the inside living units sustained heavy fire damage while the two corner units suffered smoke and water damage.

Brawn said she was dozing on her couch while watching television on Monday night. Her daughter had gone to visit someone and Mary was at home alone.

She debated on going to sleep but got up instead to go and visit a friend. By the time she got there someone called to say that her place was on fire. Brawn said she rushed back only to find fire engines outside her burning complex. “I was so close to something bad happening – what if I went to sleep? The smoke could have got me.”

Brawn isn’t sure how much of her belongings she can salvage. “I just have the clothes I was wearing and I had to borrow my friend Ken’s shoes,” she said.

Brawn’s living unit is uninhabitable. A friend has offered to take her in for the time being until she gets more permanently settled, she said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Catch a wave—up in the air

From / 3 I took a deep breath while the screechy radio conversation between my pilot, Andrzej, and Collin, the Piper’s pilot, broke the silence.

Then the Piper started to roll slowly on the strip and then faster and then…we both lifted off.

What a feeling! We were carried higher and higher toward the clouds. A few more minutes and Roznowski unhooked the umbilical cord. We were free to soar.

I always felt excitement in flying but never experienced this intense sensation of freedom, of just

floating in the air. No engine roaring, just the noise of the wind surrounding me.

Catching a wave—a thermal—the glider started to soar. It gave me tingles in my stomach like when on a rollercoaster.

Yes, the view is breathtaking, of course, but I am all in this new experience of being like a bird.

Too soon, it was time to go down toward the landing strip, time to go back to the heaviness of the land. It was way too short.

Soaring in a glider might not be an extreme sport but it is still full of

unusual emotions and sensations.

So, if you have some extra shillings in your wallet, it’s a good place to go and get tingles in your tummy.

You can bet I”ll be going again.

ESQUIMALT, B.C. – Canadian and allied military ships and aircraft will be operating in the vicinity of Port Renfrew, Port Alberni, and Tofino from Oct. 9–22 as part of a Task Group Exercise (TGEX).

Residents may see or hear increased military activity throughout those dates.

helicopters, CP-140 Aurora maritime patrol aircraft from 19 Wing Comox, Westwind and A-Jets and Twin Otters, Capt. (N) Linda Coleman said in an e-mail to the Alberni Valley News.

For security reasons Coleman couldn’t pinpoint when aircraft would be flying off the West Coast, but “nighttime flying is part of the training so I wouldn’t rule out any nighttime activity,” she noted.

Liquor licence for B. Pizza

The City of Port Alberni has endorsed a liquor licence application for Boston Pizza.

The Johnston Road restaurant wants to expand its lounge into the area now taken up by an outdoor patio so the maximum capacity will be 65 inside and 50 on the outside, according to a report by city clerk Davina Hartwell.

The restaurant plans to renovate the lounge and close it off so restaurant patrons won’t have to hear noise from the big-screen television.

Welcome defeat of election gag Skills training ‘our mission’, says Dix At least one of the election gag laws has been thrown out.

The B.C. Court of Appeal has decided that an attempt by the provincial government to control free speech in the period before a provincial election isn’t constitutional. This after the government tried several times to restrict how much money third parties can spend in the 60-day window before an election campaign officially VOTE begins.

FREE Governments and political SPEECH parties have interfered in the election process far too much. Elections are not the property of politicians — they are the property of citizens. They are the one chance that citizens have to determine who is in power, what policies will be brought in and what changes can be worked towards.

Much like its federal counterpart, the province was trying to cut off messages from anti-government groups in the preelection period. The BC Liberals were aiming at the B.C. Government Employees Union and the B.C. Teachers Federation, who ran pungent anti-government messages before the 2009 election officially began.

Individuals, organizations and businesses should have every right to spend money before and during campaigns. It’s good that the Court of Appeal has struck down restrictions during the pre-election period. It would be nice if a court would strike down the restrictions which apply during elections as well. The only purpose they serve is to keep the election process dominated by political parties, and to severely restrict the rights of citizens during what should be a freeranging debate.

ICTORIA – My column on skills training a couple of weeks ago gave short shrift to the NDP position: tax the banks and hand out grants for women’s studies, sociology and other worthless pursuits, while skilled jobs go begging.

That’s a pretty crude caricature, so I sat down with NDP leader Adrian Dix in his legislature office last week to get a better sense of his thinking on the subject.

Dix has been devoting a lot of time lately to skills training, in trades particularly. He meets frequently with business people now, and his recent speeches emphasize that every one of them talks about the growing shortage of skilled employees.

Dix credits Premier Christy Clark and jobs minister Pat Bell with

making some good moves recently, announcing equipment upgrades for vocational programs around the province. He says it’s because the NDP have been “pounding away at them for eight months” about freezing advanced education spending in their March budget. Dix calls that a crucial mistake and predicts the government will reverse it soon.

“So I think, if we’re going to have a mission for four years as a government, if we’re – elected, this is the mission: to start to address the skills shortage,” he told me.

In his speech to the recent municipal convention, and again at an NDP provincial council meeting, Dix zeroed in on B.C.’s apprenticeship system. Since the B.C. Liberals took it from trade unions and set up a

Crown corporation called the Industry Training Authority in 2004, the completion rate for apprentices has fallen to 37 per cent, he said.

Dix assured me he isn’t proposing to “blow up” the ITA, or hand control back to unions. They will have “a voice,” along with business.

Speaking to the NDP executive, Dix referred to Phil Hochstein, president of the non-union Independent Contractors and Businesses’ Adrian Dix Association, as the symbol of trades training decline. Not surprisingly, Hochstein has a different take.

The 37 per cent figure is misleading, Hochstein said, because under the ITA there are currently 32,000 apprentices in the system, twice as many as when it was union controlled. Many drop out in the first year, and

Alberta claims a better completion rate because they don’t start counting until the second year. And when Dix touts Alberta’s “mandatory” trade system, Hochstein said he means returning to a system where all work is restricted to journeymen or registered apprentices of that trade.

“What it does is impose union jurisdiction on the training system of the entire construction industry,” Hochstein said.

“So multi-skilling, multitasking, organizing the work in the most efficient way is blown out of the water, and it’s stuck in the old craft system of training.”

The marketplace has spoken on that restrictive system, he said, and unionized construction is down to about five per cent of the market, based on payroll.

Hochstein said the NDP talks a great game about getting more young people into trades. But when unions have the upper hand, they will always favour seniority.

To the Editor, Re: Something for nothing, Letters, Oct. 4.

A letter to the editor in last week’s edition said Cherry Creek water has “absolutely nothing wrong” with it.

The letter writer backed up this statement with a claim that no one has ever died in this province from drinking contaminated water.

Dennis DallaVicenza, the letter writer, said recently he asked the Vancouver Island Health Authority “how many thousands of people have died” from drinking tainted water and VIHA did not have the answer.

Dalla-Vicenza said he didn’t need the health authority’s response because in the past he asked them “the same question” and the answer was “zero”.

Does someone have to die for a problem to exist?

During those outbreaks, hundreds of people became ill.

Cherry Creek water is drawn from Lacey Lake.

Like all other surface water sources, Lacey Lake is vulnerable to contamination from wildlife and human activity.

In the early 1990s, a longstanding boil water advisory was in effect in the area due to problems with bacteria and parasites. In response to the problems, Cherry Creek Improvement District added chlorination to their water system.

Experts now know that chlorination

alone is not enough.

New government regulations require all water purveyors that use surface water as their main source for drinking water to add multiple barriers to protect against all disease-causing bacteria, parasites, and viruses.

Tainted meat taints gov’t To the Editor, During the recent E. coli crisis at the huge XL Foods processing plant in Brooks Alta., federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz appeared more interested in damage control than problem solving.

Before the tainted meat investigation was complete, a selfcongratulatory Ritz was insisting food safety had not been compromised.

His reassurances soon sounded hollow and ill-advised when the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) revoked XL Food’s licence to operate.

The compelling need to shut down the whole plant, a drastic action as well as a delayed one, serves as another alarming example of how some

corporations put the bottom-line ahead of consumer safety.

Furthermore the massive recall of Albertan beef products has caused untold damage to Canada’s international reputation.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservatives like to thump their chests and tell us that government bureaucracy interferes with business. If government regulating agencies aren’t given the tools and resources to protect Canadians from powerful profit-motivated corporations, who is going to do the job?

New road not feasible idea To the Editor, Whether or not Raven Coal comes, there’s isn’t enough vehicular traffic on Highway 4 to justify building a new highway now or for decades to come.

Indeed, in response to my question at the COC luncheon, MOT minister, the Hon. Mary Polak, said that the Liberals will not even give funding

for the ring road. No amount of crying or pleading is going to change the overall situation, but one can try with Scott Fraser and the NDP. Similarly futile are the lame attempts to make Port Alberni an Asia-Pacific Gateway port and encourage shipping lines to bring containers here. For 100 years, an argument for more overseas shipping is that we’re “closer to Asia,” with proponents forgetting that we live on an island.

Whether or not ships would come here to unload container cargo destined for Vancouver Island alone, the Port Authority can investigate and report. But the likelihood of any port expansion through overseas container shipping to here is very remote indeed.

Let’s face it, the forest industry is still the main driver of our local economy and the idea that we’re going to transition to something else with the same economic impact, whether tourism or another new industry, is drivel.

In a continued effort to encourage higher rates of recovery, BCUOMA has built a strong support network across the province. Today, participation includes 209 brand-owner members, 39 collectors and processors, 520+ return collection facilities and more than 4,000 generators. In addition, BCUOMA is reprising its successful ambassador program this summer – with two ambassadors touring the province to educate and raise awareness of the importance of used oil and antifreeze recycling.

Although it’s commonly accepted that oil and antifreeze are not household garbage we can simply throw out, more than one million litres of used oil ends up in BC landfills every year. When you consider that it only takes one drop of oil to contaminate a million drops of water, the problem is clear: there’s just too many drops to count, too many to ignore.

BCUOMA is a non-for-profit organization that encourages British Columbians to responsibly recycle used oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers.

Since the launch of the program in 2003, British Columbians have done an exceptional job of recycling their used oil materials.

Protecting our province from the harmful effects of used oil and antifreeze must be a responsibility we all share, together. So please, next time you look to dispose of used oil or antifreeze materials, find a collection facility near you. Here are three easy ways to do so:

Port Alberni RCMP have released a composite sketch of a suspect in a sexual assault that occurred during the fall fair weekend.

The victim described the suspect as a caucasian male in his 20s with a heavy build who had tan skin and was possibly part aboriginal. He had medium brown curly hair down to his ears, cut in a shape

similar to an ‘afro’.

He was wearing a white t-shirt when the attack happened.

In the early morning hours of Sept. 9, a 17-year-old female from Ahousaht was sexually assaulted at the Hospitality Inn in Port Alberni.

The woman was in town attending the Alberni District Fall Fair and was partying with friends in a ground floor room at the hotel. It is suspected that the hotel room door was not properly secured.

e decided to go to Montreal to visit my sisters, one of whom I had not seen in 50 years. The question was how to get there, since we both hate to fly.

We were going to hitch up our little trailer to the Ford Explorer, take the dog and travel across Canada, yet again. I was not that interested in driving miles and miles, especially across the prairies, when abracadabra!

I received an e-mail that Via Rail was having a sale for one week only, 60 per cent off regular fares.

We jumped on it, booked through Sears to get spread out

(Of course, I would have to pay the price for using a teleconverter; the f4.5 (f-stop) lens would lose two stops because of light loss and

become an f8 lens.

You cannot use a tele-converter on a wide-angle lens because of distortion and anyway what would be the use? You would cancel out the wide-angle effect.)

Hauling our suitcases, overnight bags and backpacks, we took the Tofino Bus to the ferry, the Horseshoe Bus to Georgia and Burrard, a taxi to the train station—whew.

We had a Last Supper with family and friends in Gastown and then boarded the train.

I quickly found out that I had the perfect lenses with me.

October 13th will be the second time the Bulldogs host Nanaimo this season. The game on Oct 13th is the tail end of a home-and-home series with Nanaimo. The first meeting of the season ended with Nanaimo leaving the Alberni Valley with a 5-2 loss.

The ‘Dogs got off to a quick start, scoring three times on their first seven shots. The three quick goals from Popoff, Tironese, and Halls resulted in a goalie change for Nanaimo. When the final buzzer went, Evan Tironese shined with a 3-point performance and Jay Deo stopped 36 of 38 Nanaimo shots. Heading into this weekend’s action there are a number of Bulldogs’ players that are hot. Evan Tironese leads the league with 18 points in 10 games. Four other Bulldogs find themselves in the top 20 as well: Ryan Lough with 14 points, Evan Anderson with 12 points, Lars Hepso with 11 points, and Kurt Gosselin with 11 points, which is currently the most points by any defenseman in the BCHL. In his last 4 games played, Jay Deo is also playing very well, stopping 123 of 128 shots for a save percentage of .961 and a GAA of 1.45. The team hopes that a lot of people will make the trip down to Nanaimo on Friday, October 12th to support the team. Both games are sure to provide fans with great entertainment.

Awards netted out at final ladies event Pitch n’ Putt

The Ladies NineHole Division hosted the final activities for this year.

A lovely lunch was chaired by division president, Lorraine Wilson.

A great turnout with ladies eagerly looking forward to receiving awards accumulated over the last six months or so.

We noted that we did get off to a slow start with the weather but now it seems it’ll go on forever...and we’re thankful for that.

Lorraine’s thank you’s covered every spectrum of our golf world and we all echoed her kind words.

Most Birdies over the season went to LaDonna Knutson, Lorraine Wilson, Marta Williamson and Kathy Toms.

Most Chip-ins over the season: Betty Adair.

Best game on the Ringer Board was taken by Sharon Hillman.

Mary Dyson presented her own trophy for the Best Handicap Reduction which was won by Kathy Toms.

The Helen Weaver Trophy for the best 10 putts was won by Marie Swain. Sharon Hillman was also front and centre to win the Isobel Pearson Trophy for the most pars this year.

Bea Stuyt, our newest member, took the best attendance award.

Raffle Prizes were donated by members and were won by Sharon Haggard, Katy Cyr, Claudia Romaniuk, Teresa Cutting, Lorraine Wilson, Sandra Simpson and Katy Lekitch.

Glass artist, painter exhibit Natural World is the Rollin Art Centre’s next art exhibit, taking place Oct. 18 to Nov. 14.

This exhibit is unique as it’s a joint show featuring Halina Tayour’s glass frameworks and Meghann Rader’s pieces in acrylic and mixed media collage.

Unscripted art in Qualicum The Old Schoolhouse in Qualicum Beach presents “Unscripted”, an exhibition and sale of the newest work produced by 13 experimental abstract artists, many of whom are members of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA).

Magic Cottage gearing up The crafty little elves at the Magic Cottage have been busy all year creating new gifts for the Christmas season.

Before you know it the Magic Cottage will be brimming with everything from edible treats to heirloom gifts. Club prospects for new members September proved to be a fruitful month for members of the Alberni Valley Rock and Gem Club.
