PORT McNEILL— With the snip of a scissors through ribbon, Port McNeill Rotary Club last week officially unveiled its latest community project.

And released its many donors to a winter of peace and quiet.

“I want to thank you all for your help,” project manager Dave Nelson told a large crowd invited to an outdoor lunch at the ribbon-cutting. He then drew laughter by adding, “And you’re all off the hook until next spring.”

The Rotary Trail, a wide, smooth path of crushed gravel running alongside Campbell Way from the town to the junction with Highway 19, was a nearly $60,000 project that drew support

from a wide range of North Vancouver Island boosters and businesses.

It was the second major project undertaken by the club this year, following the installation of six seniors housing units on Grenville Place in early spring.

“We think it’s an asset, and we’re not done yet,” said Nelson, who said the trail could eventually be extended alongside the highway to East Main, then loop back into town to eventually connect with Broughton Campground and the existing Schoolhouse Trail.

Even before the trail was completed in late September, it was getting regular use by individuals walking dogs, couples, women pushing strollers and, occasionally, local wildlife.

The low, boggy section of land nearest the highway was filled with material donated from Windsor Plywood’s new construction site downtown, and Nelson credited a wide range of other North Island contractors and organizations with providing in-kind services, equipment and material, including Cliff West and Bill Milligan, Howard Saunders, V-Echo Restorations, Port Hardy Bulldozer, Herb Saunders Construction, Orca Sand and Gravel, Western Forest Products, Furney Distributing and West Coast Trucking.

“It seemed like everyone came out to lend a hand,” said Nelson.

Anglers who fished off the pier during the year were awarded with prizes and a free dinner. Ben Luck hosts the wind up dinner each year for the regulars and each year a new core of anglers attend.

This was my first dinner since moving to Campbell River Dinner on the Pier. two years ago.

This time of year the coho are entering the river systems which include the Campbell, Oyster and Quinsam. Rotary Park along with Salmon Point are two spots to see the saltwater anglers try their luck fishing for coho salmon. This time of year there will be a heavy concentration of anglers fishing the mouth of the Oyster River.

One of the social events of the year is the Haig Brown Festival which attracts locals and people from other countries who are visiting Campbell River this ttime of year. Fishing demonstrations and exhibits are the highlight of the day aalong with music, Making of a fish print. food and readings in the library.

Lake fishing is productive this time of year especially with the warm weather. If your trying the local lakes on a windy day, try fishing under trees as the bugs are dropping into the water, this can be very productive for the fly fisherman who are in the right spot.

On the saltwater, the Browns Bay Charity Chum Fishing Derby is slated for October 26th and 27th and The Fishing Corner will be at this fun event. Last year I met people from the mainland and the Island who were fishing for the chum and the Derby was won by Stacey Noren with her 15 1/4 lb. chum. She won $500.

“After Minister Duncan’s visit, that application apparently made it off a desk in Campbell River and found its way to

Ottawa.”

The various supporters and donors were treated to lunch under a large canopy set up alongside the trail’s entrance.

Afterward, some of them chose to walk off the meal with a pleasant stroll.

“Yesterday, somebody saw a kindergarten class out for a walk here,” said Shelley Downey.

“I think it’s a great addition to the community, and it will be nice when it’s completed all the way through town.”

Oliver secures a G-G Renee Andor Black Press

Highland Secondary School 2012 grad Oliver Simmonds received a boost to his spirits just before he went off to Alberta to continue his schooling.

He was awarded the 2012 Governor General’s Academic Medal for Highland Secondary School, and he feels pretty good about the honour.

“I’m pretty proud of myself,” said Simmonds, adding he found out in late August. “I was ecstatic — that’s the best way to explain it. I was jumping up and down a little bit to be honest.”

Simmonds recalled his reaction as he stood in his dorm room at the University of Alberta, where he’s taking his first year of chemical engineering, a direction he chose

“I found around Grade 10 or 11 that chemistry was something that I really liked so I decided that I would focus on chemical engineering,” he said. “It had the prestige, I guess, and the ability to affect the environment around me more in the work place. And I found that it would be something that I

could strive towards and have a goal and hopefully succeed in.”

Simmonds hopes to get into the coop program at the university, which would mean five years of school before he finishes his degree, but it would also mean work experience, which is important to the 18-year-old student.

“I’m hoping to get

some extra money from that to help pay for schooling and get some work experience, and then hopefully move on from there with a career,” he said, adding he’s not quite sure which career path he wants to take yet. “I’m hoping to do something that’s environmentally friendly, other than that, I’m not 100 per cent sure yet because there’s so many options. I haven’t found the one that I want.”

He later added he may focus on materials production or oil sands work.

Simmonds also won Highland’s top overall academic student award each year during his final three years of secondary school.

Besides courses like chemistry, physics and math, Simmonds also enjoys history because he’s “inspired to learn more about the past.”

Simmonds noted he’s quite focused on his studies, but he practises karate — he’s been doing the martial art for 10 years and has had a black belt for five of those.

He also likes spending time with friends and playing video games is his “guilty pleasure.”

After about a month at university, Simmonds has a bit of advice for current high school students.

“Don’t take high school lightly, please.

It’s really hard here; you don’t expect the work that you get if you do well at high school,” he said, adding between class and homework he spends 50 hours per week doing school work. “It wasn’t that high school was easy, it’s just that high school, it’s nothing compared to the workload that you’re going to get here.”

Retired logger has an artistic touch on the lathe When Mike Neufeld was just 15 years old and heading off to his first job as a logger for Alaska Pine, “you were out of work as long as it took you to get to the next camp,” he recalls.

Today, at 79, Neufeld, the artist, is out of work because of global economic forces and international currency fluctuations over which he has zero control. Neufeld is best known around Campbell River for his second career as a “turner,” a master craftsman whose artistry on the lathe has produced intricate vases of BC maple, African ebony, Mexican coca bola and Chilean blood wood that have fetched more than $2,600 a piece in the finest galleries.

That was in the glory days when the Canadian dollar was languishing in the 60 cent range against the U.S. dollar.

“I could barely keep

up with demand,” Neufeld says.

His pieces sold like hotcakes in galleries in Chemainus, Tofino, Granville Island and at the Delmar Fair in San Diego.

Even though he tried to sell locally, a piece worth $1,600 could sit unsold in a local gallery for six months and then sell in a day for $2,100 in a gallery in Vancouver.

Today, in the world of Loonie parity that $2,600 vase, that takes a week to make and contains wood that costs as much as $100 a board foot, is worth maybe $1,300.

“The margins became smaller and smaller,” Neufeld says.

“I was already giving 45 per cent to the galleries.”

After all, this was more than a hobby. It was virtually a second career quite in keeping with his first.

Neufeld was destined to spend his life around wood.

When he was just 15 his logger dad said: “You really don’t want to go to school do you?

I’ll get you a job in the woods.”

When Neufeld retired from forestry in 1993 he was a market logger managing his own timber sales.

In 1996 his brother-in-law Walter intervened.

“He saw I had nothing to do and told me to go out and buy a lathe. Once I turned it on I never looked back.”

That $250 lathe became a $10,000 investment over the years that paid significant dividends, like a brand new truck.

Neufeld looked at it this way: “If it’s just a hobby you get tired of it.”

Neufeld has sold his lathe, but he still has dozens of beautiful pieces for sale, pieces that already qualify as one-of-a-kind collector’s items thanks to the strong Loonie.

The city is forecasting a $3.6 million budget shortfall for 2012, according to preliminary fig-

ures.

That’s up substantially from the last estimated budget deficit of $550,000 back in December.

The picture looks bleaker now because of a change in the prop-

erty assessment value of the defunct Catalyst mill site. The BC Assessment Authority announced early last month that Catalyst no longer meets the requirements of a major industrial property, and

has been reclassified as business/ other, which means a significant reduction in Catalyst’s property taxes.

That decision results in a loss of $1.8 million in tax revenue for

2012. Included in the deficit is a $1.1 million tax shortfall carried over from 2011, plus a $1.3 million increase in costs related to contract commitments and inflationary increases, said Laura Ciarniello, the city’s general manager of corporate services.

If the city were to maintain the current level of services it provides to citizens, the tax rate would have to increase by 24 per cent in order to make up the $3.6 million.

The loss of $1.8 million from Catalyst alone, equates to a 12 per cent residential tax increase.

To put that into perspective, Ciarniello said a one per cent residential tax increase would bring in $150,000 in revenue for the city.

That one per cent increase would mean roughly $12 more per year in property taxes for the average homeowner.

Near-death experiences remarkably similar Q. From a North Ridgeville reader: “Can you explain why so many people describing a near death experience (NDE) are in a long tunnel with bright lights at the end and dead family members urging them forward? Dreams?

Coincidence?”

A. As of 2006, there were 65 research studies of over 3,500 NDErs from North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, says University of North Texas professor of counseling Janice Holden, editor of the “Journal of Near-Death Studies.” About one in five surviving a close brush with death report an NDE, which might perhaps best be described as an “equal opportunity transpersonal experience”-transpersonal meaning “transcending the

usual personal limits of space and/or time.”

Why some people have one and others don’t is unclear. Most of those undergoing such an experience report feelings of peace, joy, and love; only a minority recount feelings of fear or profound isolation.

As for the contents of the experience itself, most NDErs report a transcendent light; many view the world from outside the body, seeing or moving through a tunnel and encountering deceased loved ones or spiritual entities.

Some see an incredibly beautiful landscape, others encounter a boundary that, if crossed, will not permit them to return to their body. “Less than a quarter report entering a Light that is an all-knowing and -loving being, having a

life review, and seeing scenes of the future.”

Not surprisingly, typical aftereffects are increased altruism and decreased materialism, a connectedness to something “higher,” and career changes to more service-oriented work.

Analysis has shown that NDEs are different from dreams and hallucinations.

Sums up Holden: “Researchers of every hospital-based study have concluded that physical-based explanations are not sufficient to explain NDEs.” Q. Why would anyone be interested in cubing the number

zero? As you know, cubing signifies multiplying a number by itself 2 times, such as 0 x 0 x 0 = zero cubed. Why then?

A. The great mathematician G.H. Hardy, near the end of his life (1940), talked about the seriousness of any mathematical result, such as “the fact that there are only four numbers (after 1) which are the sum of the cubes of their digits, viz.: 153 = 1 cubed + 5 cubed + 3 cubed = 1 + 125 + 27 370 = 3 cubed + 7 cubed + 0 cubed = 27 + 343 + 0 371 = 3 cubed + 7 cubed + 1 cubed = 27 + 343 + 1 407 = 4 cubed + 0 cubed + 7 cubed = 64 + 0 + 343” Obviously, even though the cube of 0 is just 0 and won’t change any of the

sums, the 0 factor must be included in proving this “curious and cute” 4-part statement (from “Mathematics for the Frightened” by Colin Pask).

Q. Given the thousands of bullets aimed his way, surely James Bond must qualify as one of the most shot-at cinematic heroes ever. So we ask, what are the odds of his NOT having taken a fatal hit over the past five decades?

A. Eagle-eyed Bond fan Gordon Stanger of the Solomon Islands, responding to a reader

request in “New Scientist” magazine, counted all the bullets fired in the 22 official Bond movies for a total of 4,662, a staggering improbability. (For the record, Stanger further estimated that Britain’s most famous agent 007 killed 198 of his enemies.)

Greatly complicating the survival calculation is the films’ ambiguity over who the shots were aimed at. Still, as Stanger figured it, a dead-on, well-aimed shot would have proved fatal, so he assumed all the 4,662

shots were “on the run” with a fatality estimate of about 5% per shot. This means the chance of a single shot missing Bond is 95%; hence, the chances of ALL of the shots missing can be stated as 0.95 to the 4,662 power, or 1.4 times 10 to the -104 power.

Concludes Stanger: This computes to a number “so close to zero as makes no difference.”
