When Susan Snow picked up the phone at 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 14, she first thought it might be a prank call.

“When the organizer called us, I was still asleep obviously and I proceeded to tell him why we couldn’t come to Spain for the award because we couldn’t afford it,” she said on Monday. “And Gary is in the background saying, ‘Wait a minute, wait a minute.’”

he air was thick with smoke in the Creston Valley earlier this week due to a sixhectare fire northwest of Kitchener.

First reported on Sept. 30, air tankers and two helicopters were responding to the blaze on Monday. An initial crew was on-site and 10 more personnel were en route to the high elevation fire near Six Mile Creek in the Iron Range.

“The cause of the fire is not known and is under investigation,” said Karlie Shaughnessy, a fire information officer with the BC Fire Service’s Southeast Fire Centre. “The fire is not threatening any

While waiting to take her position with PAWS as caretaker she has helped around the shelter in many ways… trying to rid the walks of trespassing gophers, grooming dogs, mending fences, cleaning around the buildings and all this on top of helping many days a week with the morning and evening cats and dogs routines. As an experienced animal person we have all benefitted from her new eyes giving us feedback and suggestions to improve quality of life at the shelter. C.V. Farmers’ Voting selects Shannon Nickish Market moving as Queen’s medal recipient to fall location at Morris greenhouse Advance Staff

After a successful summer season, the Creston Valley Farmers' Market is on the move to its fall location starting on Saturday.

The October relocation from Millennium Park to Morris Flowers Garden Centre helps to make it one of the longest market seasons in B.C., and allows for a wider variety of vendors to sell their wares before Christmas.

“The regulars start to go on vacation,” said comanager Martha Boland. “Then you have an influx of new people. You find people who wouldn't typically be at it because they sell things that are better for this time of year.”

Throughout the summer, the market averaged about 35 vendors and was offered twice a week, on Saturdays at the park and Thursdays behind the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Boland and co-manager Tamara Movold enjoyed their summer taking over for manager (and new mom) Jen Comer — whom Movold refers to as a “one-woman army” — and found themselves capable of keeping the large weekly event under control.

“It was exciting and draining,” said Boland.

“It's very intense all the time,” added Movold.

“It seemed like we got a lot of good feedback from the vendors and customers.”

A few weeks ago, they organized a vendor appreciation weekend, in which customers got to name their favourite vendors (the winner hasn't been announced yet).

“A lot of people said, 'That was a great idea. You should do it more often,' ” said Movold. “It was a great way to make a connection.”

To further connect with anyone interested, the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition, which runs the farmers' market, resumed its monthly meetings this week, and they will continue on the first Monday of each month at the College of the Rockies greenhouse. The Nov. 4 meeting will be a visioning session for the coalition, and will likely also include a guest speaker.

Interest is already high for the relocated market, which will run at the Morris greenhouse on Saturdays at its usual time from 8 a.m.-noon from Oct. 6-Dec. 22.

“Lots of people are not only signing up but trying to secure a spot for the entire season,” said Movold.

“It's compact and you have the natural light and warmth of the greenhouse,” said Boland. “To have such a great location is amazing.”

Following an online and phone-in vote — which itself followed a monthlong nomination process — Sirdar's Shannon Nickish is one of four Nelson-Creston residents who will receive a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from MLA Michelle Mungall.

“I am very excited and pleased with the whole selection process,” said Mungall. “There were so many people involved in deciding the recipients of this prestigious award, and the choices are clearly well respected pillars of their communities.”

Nickish, who owns Sirdar General Store, earned her nomination through involvement in a variety of community groups, as well as her dedication to being the small community’s unofficial historian.

Tasked with distributing four medals, the selection process started with an open call for nominations in August, from which four community members — representing the Creston Valley, Nelson and area, Ymir-Salmo and Kaslo-North Kootenay Lake — created a shortlist of 13. Everyone in the NelsonCreston riding was then asked to vote online or by phone, selecting

one person from each of the areas.

After the nearly 700 votes were tallied, Kaslo's Bruce Walker, Nelson's Joan Reichardt and Salmo's Dorothy Hearn joined Nickish — who was nominated alongside Creston's Phil Thomas and Anne Hepher — as recipients. They will be honoured at a ceremony hosted

by Mungall in 2013.

“I want to congratulate and thank everyone that was nominated, submitted a nomination, and voted,” said Mungall. “We are very lucky to live in such engaged communities, and it is wonderful to recognize those working to make our country great.”

Tabletree up against one nominee From page 1 Tabletree has been selected in the best juice award category, along with just one other nominee. Participants in the annual event, being held this year in Barcelona, include industry giants like Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola.

“We have known about the World Juice Awards for several years,” she said. “We were introduced to Gary Morton, a value-added expert from Nova Scotia who gave a workshop a few years back. Gary became a good friend of ours and a mentor to us in our business. Gary worked with a blueberry juice company in Nova Scotia that won this award seven or eight years ago and he spoke to us about the award and how it increased their sales significantly.”

Tabletree juice has been nominated in previous years, but this is the first year it has made the final cut.

“They also told us that they and the judges had been researching us over the Internet,” Snow said. “We try to keep up with the whole social media thing, with our website, Twitter, Facebook and the like and in this instance we think it worked to our advantage.”

Coincidentally, the Snows had already been planning to travel to France later this year to meet with French researchers.

“They have been testing for use in cardiovascular research. We were invited to a meeting in Vancouver by IRAP (Industrial Research Assistance Program) where a delegation of researchers came from France and one scientist was very interested in our

products because of the anti-inflammatory properties of cherries,” she said. “The initial studies were good and we are awaiting the final results.

This is very exciting as we have a lot of testimonials of people being helped with aches and pains, gout, inflammation and lung conditions that have been using our juice and culinary sauce and it would be wonderful if cardiovascular health could improve by using it, as well.”

Whether or not Tabletree comes away with the award, simply being a

finalist could reap large benefits.

“A lot of the big companies will be represented at the conference and it will put us on the world map,” Snow said. “We are able to track visitors that go to our website and already our website has doubled in hits and an amazing number of out of country visitors have come to our site already.

“As a matter of fact, I told Gary later that after this gets around, I didn’t think we had made enough juice this year. It’s a very exciting time for Tabletree, that’s for sure.”

CRC volunteer Linda Price said the family arrived two weeks later than scheduled when Thai officials refused to let them leave the refugee camp. It took intervention by United Nations representatives in the area to ensure they were allowed to leave for their new home.

“These families coming to B.C. is the result of efforts by the East Kootenay Friends of Burma,” Price said. “I saw a presentation by the group and we decided to help out.”

A $2,000 monthly financial commitment is required to pay the expenses of a refugee family, but equally important is the volunteer aspect. Arrangements must be made for English language lessons, school, vocational training and social needs, and it works because of the generosity of CRC volunteers and their friends.

“Creston is an incredibly supportive, welcoming community,” Price said.

In order to continue to raise funds for this and future refugee families (this is the 22nd in about 25 years), the CRC is sponsoring a series of travel nights. The first, Marvelous Morocco, will be held in the Trinity United Church on Oct. 19 and the presenter will be former Creston resident Fliss Klassen.

CRC accepts commitments of monthly donations of $10 and up, and donations are accepted at the United Church. Tax receipts are issued.

Price said the support of local individuals is bolstered by that of the Creston Ministerial Association, as well as Rotary and Lions clubs.

“We work hard with all refugee adults to get them trained for employment,” Price said. “They are proud people and they know they aren’t coming here to sit and be cared for.”

Much ado about not enough

Terrorism: “The use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes.”

Terrorist: “A person, usually a member of a group, who uses or advocates terrorism; a person who terrorizes or frightens others.”

I went to one of my favourite reference tools, Dictionary.com, to check the above definitions after once again hearing numerous references to the terms last week in the reporting of Omar Khadr’s return to Canada.

By those definitions, Khadr, at the age of 15, Canadian born and of Egyptian decent, the son of a father who was involved in Islamic groups’ efforts to undermine American activities in Asia and the Middle East, was a terrorist. But, as I listened to Canadian Public Safety Minister Vic Toews state the “facts”, and thought about Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s coolness on the subject (he has been busy lately, accepting a humanitarian award from some hitherto unheard of organization, being announced the winner of a first ever Nixon award by another, and snubbing the United Nations by not speaking to the General Assembly) I thought about how the legacy of the Karl Rover/Donald Rumsfeld era has influenced Canadian political thought.

Consider that a 15-year-old, facing overwhelming odds in a gunfight with American forces in Afghanistan, and himself eventually severely wounded, somehow ended up in Guantanamo Bay, which will go down in history as one of the great travesties against

Quads are dangerous To the Editor: For the last 10 years, I have been observing ever-increasing traffic on Simmons Road, and I assume on all roads in our community. For now, I will concentrate on the junction of Smith Road (which is less frequented) and Simmons Road.

I was a witness to very serious accident about three years ago, involving children of the same family. There were no RCMP or ambulance and everything was hushed up within three hours.

Lately, one family and other neighbors are increasingly using their quads.

I am not objecting to anybody’s pursuit of happiness, leisure and their toys.

However, to my knowledge, there is no ministerial permit that allows use of a quad or unlicensed motorcycle on a public road, especially not while a member of the family sits behind or two innocent children are in front, literally on the handlebars, barreling down the road at 80 clicks at 10 p.m. with no helmet and no lights. Still with me? I am observing more and more near misses at this intersection (where, of all things, the mailboxes are located).

Sooner or later, a horrific accident is going to happen and I am very concerned to say the least.

My wife is terrified to leave home, and if she drives, we are literally crawling getting onto Simmons. And I must mention that nearby is an individual with two sets of water drilling machinery — that is, two huge trucks and a smaller pickup.

Now, who will pay for the lifetime support of the quadriplegic who will try so desperately to explain that he meant no harm, and was just warming up his machine?

You see, on occasion there are two or three trips of a quad within an hour.

I have informed the local RCMP of this situation in the past on a couple of occasions, but regret to inform that I have never seen a patrol car once near this extremely dangerous intersection

Once the tragedy happens, it will be too late to raise my hand and testify to the lunacy and abuse of privilege to live in this peaceful and quiet setting.

So far, I was asked to identify the individuals and testify in court. But to be hated by the entire community as a whistleblower, while everybody else knowing about this is hiding and quiet? Even a prominent lawyer living in our community has not raised his hand and pointed a finger. So I do at least warn everybody to watch out and crawl. Beware of quads!

Immediately, the second phase was to have the big guns of the battleships that came in under the cover of darkness with the Canadian and British infantry to shell the beach and sand cliffs just prior to our soldiers starting their assault by wiping out any manmade obstruction or enemy resistance.

Within the hour prior before the first phase began, a decision was made to cancel the air support and the heavy shelling by the battleships. Thousands of soldiers were deployed into landing craft for the assault on the beach. As soon as the landing craft ramps dropped down, our soldiers were fired upon by enemy snipers and machinegun fire from the clifftops, and those infantrymen that made it up onto the beach were stopped in their tracks by rows of anchored barbed wire. Being out in the open, it was a slaughter by the enemy’s heavy calibre machineguns literally shooting arms and legs off, and in some cases cutting a man in half. A thousand were wounded, as many taken prisoner and over 3,000 were killed. Amazingly, some men still managed to get to the cliffs to climb and attack some machine-gun bunkers.

Churchill and Mountbatten had preempted a news report prior to the raid at Dieppe that the assault was a success and still broadcast it over the air right after the assault. Ironically, after the war, syphilis killed Churchill before the booze did and Mountbatten was blown to pieces while asleep on his yacht by an IRA bomber in 1979.

All these soldiers who have died for our freedom today is mind-boggling — all these sacrifices to keep us free and yet freedom is taken for granted by so many today. We have a federal leader and provincial party leaders that choose to dictate rather than lead. Our freedom of rights and ownership of our natural resources are being eroded through legislation by those very two politicians and others who are placing the wreaths at the cenotaphs. The decades old eulogy of “lest we forget” has been long forgotten by these politicians and some of us.

Our freedom is taken for granted To the Editor: Once again, the 11th month, 11th day and 11th hour will soon arrive, and once again our prime minister at a ceremony on Parliament Hill and our premier in Victoria will participate in the Remembrance Day ceremonies with a sombre look on their faces while laying a wreath at the foot of the cenotaph.

In my era, the red poppies always brings to mind one of the worst atrocities in the Second World War with the heaviest loss of life of Canadian, British and American soldiers in one attack that could have been prevented. This was the assault on the long, wide beaches of Dieppe against the enemy occupancy in France. Commanded and planned by two unsavoury politicians, British prime minister Winston Churchill, who got his strength from a bottle of scotch, and Lord Mountbatten, a wife swapper.

‘Shoulder season’ a great one for valley tourism

It has been a good season for tourism in the valley. The Creston Valley has had some excellent media exposure thanks to stories about our wineries (one magazine dubbed the Creston Valley as an “emerging wine market”), Kootenay Lake (Sympatico travel’s top 10 lakes in Canada), the International Selkirk Loop (top 10 circle routes and top 10 motorcycle routes), and agritourism (a feature in the Toronto Sun talked about local cheese and wine), just to name a few.

We have been working diligently with Kootenay Rockies Tourism, Hello BC, Tourism BC and the International Selkirk Loop to get

some of our attractions more press coverage and it is starting to take root and grow. In fact, our visitor numbers are up 20 per cent overall compared to this time last year!

There are still opportunities to attract some of that increased traffic to your business, even this year. The glorious weather we are having is helping extend the season later into the fall. The Visitor Centre is still quite busy.

Fall is a valuable “shoulder season” for tourism, especially in rural agriculture-based communities. There are great opportunities to attract tourists to your business. As pointed out by the folks at RuralTourismMarketing.com, “Fall agritourism activities can extend a … town’s visitor season. What are people looking for in the fall?

Harvest related activities, fall color, U-pick opportunities, farmer’s markets, pumpkin patches and corn mazes. Any chance to get out in the countryside with the changing of the season!”

Check out local happenings and start thinking of ways to work with those activities. Be a tourist in your own backyard and look for opportunities to partner with local attractions or events.

Groups like the C.V. Cruisers, Creston Rotary Club, Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, Art Walk and the chamber of commerce organize activities that involve other groups/organiza-

tions/businesses. What can you offer to extend the various activities to keep visitors here longer (and spending more money locally)?

Part of our overall strategy for promoting the Creston Valley is promoting our enviable quality of life. An emphasis on agritourism or ecotourism or rural tourism all adds up to promoting authentic, local experiences.

A concert featuring local musician Karl Sommerfeld will be held at the Snoring Sasquatch on Oct. 13.

Born and raised and taught fiddling in Creston, Sommerfeld left home to pursue a degree in forestry. Returning in 2006, he renewed his interest in music and began performing with several local musicians of vari-

ous genres, playing fiddle and later adding harmony vocals.

Over the years, Sommerfeld’s musical career has progressed as he began playing at festivals, touring and teaching workshops around B.C. and Alberta.

His playing is also featured on recordings by Full Circle, Natalie Germann, the Oars and Elena Yeung.

With plans to move to Ontario for the winter, this concert will

provide one last opportunity for several of Sommerfeld’s musical friends to perform with him until his return. Special guests will include Bryan Ferguson, and Elena Yeung and the Kootenay Express.

Bob Gollan and his group, Peanut Butter and Jam (Julie Groot, Jean Guineau, Chris Dooley and Rhonda Barter), are “going country” for the night and hosting some of their very good country music friends.

Hometown singer-songwriter Tim Plouffe (above) is visiting from his current home in Grande Prairie, Alta., and will perform some of his older and new original

songs. Plouffe has won awards for his performances and songwriting over the last two years in Alberta.

Kootenay Jack (Kenny) from Fruitvale will be performing, as well. He is well-known for his outlaw, rockabilly and original songs, and has recorded many CDs. Rounding out the performers is Cranbrook’s Trena Spears, who won the Kootenays' Best Singer competition in June. Speers has an awesome voice that is just a treat to hear!

This is a great opportunity to have some fun, dance and enjoy some country music in a big informal living room environment. There will be some mixing of musicians over the night, which should create some very interesting results!

A cash bar will offer beer, local wines and coolers, as well as coffee and tea. Meat and cheese trays will be provided. The music runs from at 7-11 p.m. Advance tickets are $10 at Black Bear Books and Kingfisher Used Books, or $12 at the door.

Participants will be engaged in a hands-on process of building a brick oven and, surprisingly, cooking breads and pizzas in it on Sunday. The oven to be built will cost only a few hundred dollars to build but be equivalent to one bought off the shelf for a few thousand.

Food processing tour helping small businesses

SMALL SCALE FOOD PROCESSOR ASSOCIATION

The Small Scale Food Processor Association (SSFPA) is about to embark on its “Get Ready to Grow” tour of eight British Columbia communities through the fall of 2012, taking fresh ideas to growing food processing businesses across the province. Each stop on the tour will include a series of presentations designed to help small businesses grow, includ-

ing adapting digital technology, worker safety and an overview of online food processing development resources.

“Get Ready to Grow!” is scheduled to stop in Creston on Oct. 15 at the College of the Rockies.

SSFPA executive director Candice Appleby is excited about what the tour offers small business.

“The demand for BC food products is growing at a rapid pace,” she said, “and we want

to make sure that new and existing agri-food businesses have access to the tools they need to help them meet the growing demand.”

WorkSafe BC is also a partner on the tour. WorkSafe BC statistics show that injury rates increase when a small scale food processor company has 10-19 workers, compared to those with fewer than 10. For a growing business, the impact of lost productivity resulting from an injured worker can be significant.

Appleby is also eager to help small businesses adopt digital technology, important for businesses located far from large urban centres: “We’re especially excited to introduce ‘TotalSnap’ to local businesses,” she said.

“This online solution — developed by Hosting Nation out of Parksville — offers businesses an affordable and user friendly marketing system to help maximize their online presence, including e-commerce, social media and mobile phone-friendly websites”.

Doors open for registration and networking at 4 p.m.

Nourishing refreshments will be provided. Sessions start at 4:30 p.m. There is limited seating and preregistration is required, so please register early.

In what will surely be an evening to remember, the Creston Community Auditorium Society (CCAS) is presenting a benefit concert on Oct. 18 featuring East Shore Dixie, led

by Donnie Clark, and the Creston Community Band, conducted by Monte Anderson.

Funds raised at the concert will be used to purchase needed equipment at the Prince Charles Theatre — currently on the wish list is an upgraded sound system and, eventually, new seats.

“It’s a great privilege to have both groups together at

once,” said CCAS president Joanna Wilson. “We are very honoured that they are lending their talents to keep the theatre thriving.”

Clark has long been one of the country’s leading trumpet and flugelhorn players, using a versatile style suited to jazz, easy listening or country.

“As a player, arranger, and composer on the West Coast since the early 1960s, he has been leader of the Donnie Clark quartet and quintet and the Don Clark Ragtime Band, as well as a member of leading jazz ensembles such as the Bobby Hales Orchestra, the West Coast Jazz Orchestra, and

a regular on CBC radio and television,” said his bio at www.pgmusic.com. “He was a founding member of the legendary Vancouver all-star jazz sextet Pacific Salt, touring throughout North America and Europe in the 1970s.”

“We’re playing a number of Donnie Clark’s compositions, actually,” said Anderson, who helped start the band, which has about 20 members, in the 1980s.

In addition to the bands, the evening will feature 2012 Creston’s Best Singer contestant Cara Waddle.

“This concert is a showcase of some the Creston Valley’s best musical talent,” said CCAS vicepresident Brian Lawrence. “Buying a ticket won’t just help the auditorium society, but it will allow anyone attending to have an evening they won’t forget.”

Literacy planning is a community event COLUMBIA BASIN ALLIANCE FOR LITERACY

Today we are surrounded by information. It is everywhere, and in many different forms. We use literacy skills constantly as we check our email, shop for groceries, pay our bills, read the news and many other daily tasks. Not only must we be able to interpret the written word, we need the skills to evaluate this information. What does the food label “light”' really mean? When is an email from a stranger legitimate, and when is it spam?

How do interest rates really affect me as a consumer? The ability to answer these questions hinges on one thing: literacy skills.

“Literacy skills impact our lives and communities in ways that might surprise you,” said Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) executive director Ali Wassing. “Studies show a strong correlation between high literacy levels, good health and low unemployment.

Ultimately, a community is more resilient when its citizens have strong literacy skills.”

Since 2003, community literacy organizations throughout B.C., such as CBAL, have had provincial support to develop community literacy planning committees.

They discuss, plan and take action on literacy development for all ages and all needs.

The Decoda Community Literacy Planning Guide says, “It is in communities themselves that literacy is practiced and sustained. Therefore, community engagement is essential to creating an environ-

ment in which literacy programs can be successful.”

In 2007, the province asked boards of education to be more actively involved.

They are now responsible for submitting district literacy plans to the Ministry of Education. This comprehensive, annual document combines community literacy plans into one document for each school district.

Community members representing public health, school districts, colleges,

municipalities, chambers of commerce, early childhood development teams, libraries, community services, employment agencies and many others come together as community literacy planning committees to discuss local needs.

“Interesting partnerships develop and important resources are shared at these community planning meetings,” said Betty Knight, CBAL's East Kootenay regional program manager. “Everyone benefits.”

Books for Babies, Luv to Learn, Parents as Literacy Supporters, Parents Reading, Children Succeeding, One-to-One Reading, Young Parents Education Program, Seniors Computers and English conversation groups are just a few of the programs introduced through the community planning process.

As awareness grows around health and financial literacy, and of how many aspects of daily life are impacted by literacy, the need for these community collaborations becomes more important.

This year, the community literacy planning committees are opening their doors wider, hosting open discussions about literacy service gaps, assets and possible solutions.

“We hope these meetings will draw more community members into a broader discussion of literacy and lifelong, lifewide learning," said Desneiges Profili, CBAL's West Kootenay regional program manager. “Everyone should be involved in literacy planning, because literacy affects everyone.”

It was also during this summer Jeff became reaquainted aTuainted with Andrea Knutson, a friend from his high school days. A romance blossomed and that fall, Andrea joined Jeff in Fort St. John as his wife.

Jeff established J. Huscroft Welding Ltd. in 2007, which became very successful due to his hard work, dedication and reliability.

In the fall of 2011, Jeff and Andrea purchased a 155 acre farm just outside of Fort St. John and in April 2012, along side Andrea’s dad, Mel Knutson, they moved out to the farm to begin building their dream home. Sadly, three weeks before the completion of their home, our son was taken.

Jeff was predeceased by his grandparents Leonard and Edith Huscroft and grandfather Godfrey Vigne.

Thunder Cats shut out Rockies 3-0

A weekend that started well turned out to be a disappointment for the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, who won Friday’s game, but lost on Saturday and Sunday.

“Friday was probably the best game we’ve played this season,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. “We had everyone playing at 100 per cent. It kind of gave us the realization of where we can be as a team.”

The 3-0 shutout over the Columbia Valley Rockies saw Colby Livingstone, Marcel Fuchs and Trevor LeBlanc score in the

first, second and third periods, respectively, but Hepditch gave a lot of credit to goalie Michael Hails, who was named the first star after stopping 30 shots.

“It wasn’t an easy shutout for him,” said Hepditch. “He made some unbelievable saves and competed hard for the whole game.”

Hails was named the third star the following night in Fernie, when he stopped 54 out of 58 shots from the Fernie Ghostriders. But the goals from Kevin Warwick, unassisted in the second period, and Jesse Gartland, early in the third, weren’t enough to prevent the 4-2 loss.

“That was a test to see where we

were at as a team and unfortunately we didn’t pass the test like we wanted to,” said Hepditch. “We really got snapped into reality there. They did everything they needed do to be successful. We weren’t even close.”

Hepditch put backup goalie Zach Straza in net for Sunday’s 5-3 home loss to the Princeton Posse, but although he played well, “as a team we kind of let him down,” he said.

Trevor Hanna and Ty Kronewitt scored in the second period, and Spenser Baldock in the third, but Hepditch was mostly pleased with the effort from Tyler Akeroyd in his first game since recovering from an injury.

“If we’d had everyone playing at his level, we could have been successful,” he said.

This weekend, the Thunder Cats return to Fernie on Saturday, and Hepditch is hoping for a different outcome against the Ghostriders, who, with seven points, sit just ahead of the Thunder Cats in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division standings.

“We’re definitely going to be trying to stick to systems and execute them a lot better than we did,” he said. “We had a lot of players on their own page on Saturday. We have to try to get everyone back on board.”
