Recognizing Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows’ Finest The 2012 version of our popular A-List feature is upon us, and this year, while we present the results of our on-line and inpaper voting, we will also feature some opinions from a select few ‘people on the street.’ One of my favourite things about Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows is the fact that, given the chance, our citizens are always ready to talk about the pride they have in our community, and they are always willing to step up and support initiatives that improve the lot of people in need.

What I love about Maple Ridge By Ernie Daykin, mayor of Maple Ridge Maple Ridge my home town and I am proud of that. What makes it such a great place is the people. Folks who say "hi" on the street as you walk to the bank or people who are generous in times of need, there is a real sense of community here. The responses I have seen again and again over the years by Maple Ridge residents are heart warming, the way they are so generous with both time and money, whether to help a family that has experienced a fire, or to bring food or funds to make sure the Friends in Need Food Bank has enough, or coaching kids sports, or building and maintaining a horse trail, or being stewards of our great natural setting.
Creek Regional Park, or taking the kids to the spray park at Maple Ridge Park, or strolling along the dikes, it refreshes and invigorates. The view of the Golden Ears mountains out the front window is a great backdrop for Maple Ridge. I love the ACT. It so great to have a top quality theatre where we can go to a play or concert that is as good as any in Vancouver, and be a fiveminute drive from home. We have great festivals in Maple Ridge that bring a wide range of fun, music and action to downtown.

Maple Ridge is blessed, with 40 per cent of our residents volunteering and giving back with their time, experience, passion and money. There are many folks who make a difference in Maple Ridge, because they care. I love the Haney Farmers Market, a great place in Memorial Peace Park to pick up fresh local products, a great place to visit and catch up with friends and others, even on the rainy Saturdays, because of the atmosphere in the park spirits are not dampened.

By Michael Hall, News Editor I've lived in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows for the past 23 years, so my A-list of things I like most about the community is pretty long. There are places I like to go for lunch and dinner, coffee and groceries and gas, to buy books and get skates sharpened. I usually go to the same places. Same for getting things for around the house, or going for a jog or a hike or a swim. But mostly those places serve my own likes and tastes, my own habits, which is why if ever you need to find me after work or on the weekend, I'm probably at the rink. And through those experiences, I find what I like most about Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows is the people I've met along the way: the kids I've coached in hockey and baseball and their parents; all the people at my children's schools, the teachers and administrators; all the people I've met through work; all my friends and neighbours and acquaintances, people I went to school with – an old friend calls Maple Ridge 'Port Coquitlam East.'
Darren Hankey lived around the corner from me as a kid. Now he teaches at the elementary school around from where I live now, and only lives a few blocks away himself. Mike Jones lived across from Darren Hankey when we were young. Now Mike Jones lives on my street. Another friend from high school, Ron Williams – a respected local lacrosse coach – lives around the corner from me now. I could go on: at Planet Ice one recent night, I was talking to two friends from high school, Lauren Crowe and Kevin Duchak, when Nicole Hough walked by. She was Nikki Edwards when she went to high school with us, and elementary school with me and Lauren. Now all of our kids play hockey, some on the same team even. Honestly, I can't hardly go anywhere around town without bumping into someone I know, and I love that, whether it's a quick hello or we stop and chat for a bit. It's great to know what's going on, and the people who know me, I'm rarely at a loss for words.

Feeling the energy By Doug Bing, Pitt Meadows councillor I enjoy living in the Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge area because of the many personable, community-minded people who live here. Both places are unique with a small-town charm and friendliness that isn't the norm in larger urban centres such as Vancouver or Surrey. I am particularly impressed by the positive energy and enthusiasm of those who give back to the community through volunteer work. I feel what makes a good community great is its volunteers, and both communities have terrific volunteers. I think this says a lot about the people who live and work here. Like most of you, I love living in an urban area surrounded by so much beauty, tranquility and open space. Within a matter of minutes of leaving the office, you can be decompressing with a run, walk or bike-ride along the dikes. With a bit more time, you can go paddling a canoe or kayak on the Alouette River or go for an invigorating hike through the Malcolm Knapp UBC Research Forest. Although I am a city councillor for Pitt Meadows, I am a big booster of the entire region. I am aware of, or have visited, most businesses in both communities over the years. As well, most of my dental patients live or work in one of our two communities and I like to repay their support by patronizing local enterprises as much as I am able. As far as events go, two in particular stand out in my mind. My favourite annual event is Pitt Meadows Day because of its long history and unique way of getting an entire community involved in a day of fun. From the traditional pancake breakfast, to the parade and events at Harris Road Park, to the salmon BBQ and the fireworks finale, everything works like clockwork and all ages have a great time. Finally, my favourite special event ever was the Olympic Torch Run in 2010. Who can forget the enthusiastic crowds lining the streets to watch and the anticipation that built as the Olympic torch passed through both communities to help start what was to become the best Winter Olympics ever.

Amazing people Like many Maple Ridge residents, our family feels very fortunate to live in a town with such natural beauty. We enjoy hiking the various trails, spending days as a family at Maple Ridge Park (one of the best spray parks around), kayaking at Alouette Lake, boating on Pitt Lake, camping at Golden Ears Provincial Park, and playing in the sand at Whonnock Lake, where my great-great grandparents and their families used to play. Whonnock means so much to our family that we honored our grandparents with a bench on the beach overlooking the water. My family views our community as an extended family and we love being a part of as many community events as we are able. Some of our favorites include: Caribbean Festival, Cheers to the Planet, Christmas Haven, Country Fest, Earth Day, GETI Fest, Ghost Ridge, the Home Show and, of course, the various parades. Halloween wouldn’t be the same for our family without a trip to the Laity pumpkin patch.

Favorite activities include attending shows at The Act, swimming at the Leisure Centre, skating at Planet Ice, and biking at the skate park. Oh, and how lucky are we to be in such close proximity to seven golf courses? The public library is a great resource and does so many great entertaining things for the family, from reading club and story time to movie nights. Our youngest loves going to the library even if just to enter the draw and count all the items on display. While our town has a desire to move forward, the rich history provided by the historical society keeps us grounded and connected to our roots. I intend to see Maple Ridge maintain that balance as it continues to grow, and see that citizens needs, hopes and desires are put at the forefront of the process. It’s the heart of the residents, the passion of community volunteers, the amazing amount of wonderful groups, the accommodating small businesses, and the amount of people that come together to work collectively that are the backbone of our community and that make everything possible and worth-while."

A town of little pretention
Living in Maple Ridge and being a resident of the community for the past 29 years I have centered my focus on residential sales in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. In doing so I have met many wonderful people in the community which have made my career that much more enjoyable. One of my father’s first employers in Maple Ridge was Maple Ridge Taxi, owned by Gordon Robson, who later would become the mayor. My mother worked in the real estate office of the Telep family, across from Overwaitea Foods, where my older brother would later work. My first school was Glenwood elementary, and one of my first teachers was Terry Hansen, who later would be my colleague. One of the first houses my parents bought was from teacher Dave Estergaard. Later Dave would become the founding principal of Thomas Haney Secondary, where I would also teach music for 17 years, on land that was purchased from the Telep family.

I attended Westview Junior, then Maple Ridge Senior, where I played in the band program, which I now head up.
In those years, I attended school with folks like Mike Keenan, who would later become the principal of Westview secondary, then later Samuel Robertson Technical School, and Gord Daykin, whose father, Ernie, would later sell me building materials for my home, and would become the mayor. Growing up, many things have changed in Maple Ridge. Many people have moved in, and some moved out, while I have seen this small town grow five-fold. Many of the landmarks have disappeared, the roads have been rebuilt, and many buildings have come and gone. Our well-known proximity to the beauty of nature has not changed, but it certainly has become more crowded. The one thing that has stood unyielding is the core values of the people. We are still a small town with an ethic of hard work, strong family values, and solid community spirit. I have been proud to raise my own children here, and help provide for them a solid education in a strong public school district.

Everyone has no doubt heard the oft-repeated cliche that travel is said to broaden one's mind. We certainly know that some things you would do as a tourist that you might never think to do at home. Here are a few that would make my list: • The Billy Miner Heritage Pub. Located on the Fraser River near the old Haney train station and wharf, this former bank, said to have been near a train robbery perpetrated by Billy Miner, is more than a great place to learn about the history of Maple Ridge through the pictures on the walls and the stories the pub patrons are always willing to unfold; it's also a live music venue and renowned for being one of the first locations to host a live music jam. • Bean Around Books. This tiny little second-hand bookstore and coffee shop is located on Lougheed Highway across the street from Langley Farmer's Market. Inside, the walls are covered by stacks of books, paintings, and a collection of tea pots. You can buy a greeting card designed by a local artist while enjoying a latte and thinking up clever thoughts to jot in your card. • Another favourite location is Osprey Village in South Bonson, Pitt Meadows. On a Saturday, you can start the morning with a jog or stroll along the forested trail that winds next to the river. Live music and festivals are part of the traditions organized by folks in this creative neighbourhood.
