More than a dozen semi-trucks were lined up along Bradner Road on Monday morning as residents erected a makeshift blockade. The protest was designed to draw attention to what locals believe is illegal dumping taking place on 29325 Marsh McCormick Rd. Residents say that for the past few months the property, owned by Gene Drader, has had dozens of dump trucks arrive each day, bringing a mixture of soil and concrete pieces as fill. But no city permit has been granted. Duncan Kerfoot, who has lived in Bradner for the past 11 years, said the city has done little to stop it, other than warning the owner. “... he just continues hauling,” said Kerfoot. After getting little civic action, the decision was made to block the trucks’ path. “We just gave up waiting for the city.” Kerfoot said living close to the dumping site has been difficult. He said the process goes on from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is noisy. It also leaves dirt and mud on the road as well as creating cement and other forms of dust in the area. Some residents are concerned that the

constant dumping is creating health problems for humans and animals. “It’s come to the point that the vet is looking after my horse because he’s got respiratory problems. I’m on three inhalers now. The dust is terrible,” said Carol Knelson, who has lived in the area for 30 years. Residents aren’t blaming the truck drivers, who they said are just doing their jobs, but the blockade was needed to get some response from the city.

The tactic seemed to work as the Abbotsford Police and city works inspector Ryan Doman attended the scene. Doman told the crowd the city is aware of the concerns and is currently looking into legal action against the property owner. He acknowledged that the owner does not have a permit to deposit soil. “We have contacted our lawyer to find out what our next steps are, as per our bylaw,” he said.

Once legal counsel has responded, Doman said he is hopeful that the situation can be settled. Doman confirmed that stop-work orders have been posted, but dumping has continued. After close to three hours, police and the city convinced residents to remove the barricade and allow trucks to pass. While the property owner declined to comment on the issue, an official response was issued to The News. “The owners of the property 29325 Marsh McCormick Rd., Gene and Gillian Drader, have been instructed by their lawyer to exercise due diligence to help prevent any further collapse of their property or the road that borders it. Because of a right-of-way agreement after the original settlement of litigation with the city, there is no permit required. Any stop work notices have been a misunderstanding due to lack of communication. “The only option to perform this maintenance is to use clean fill authorized by their geotechnical engineer to help the stabilization of the surrounding properties and Marsh McCormick Rd.” The statement did not go into any detail about a previous litigation, and no one at city hall was available to comment by press time.

The Abbotsford Police Department has issued a public notice about the release from prison of a man with an extensive criminal history that includes assault and robbery. John James St. Jean, 43, has been released from custody after serving a two-year sentence for domestic assault, and is not permitted to be in Abbotsford. Const. Ian MacDonald said of particular concern to police is St. Jean’s history of violence in domestic situations. “We feel that we must proactively work to protect the public, and women in particular, by sharing information st. jean about St. Jean,” he said. Parched to the point of a record

Our “Wet Coast” nickname has been a complete misnomer these past two months, as weather records are being set for a lack of precipitation. “We’re dry as a bone right now,” said Environment Canada meteorologist David Jones. Abbotsford saw just 6.6 mm of rainfall in September. Combined with August’s 3.8 mm, the city got only 10.4 mm over the two months. That’s the driest it has been since weather records began for the city in 1945. The last time there was so little precipitation was 1974, when Abbotsford got just 16.3 mm in August and September.

Normal rainfall for August is 48 mm, and for September is 54 mm. How dry is it? Virtually the entire province, and the Lower Mainland in particular, have been positively parched – Vancouver and Agassiz have both set 123-year-old records. A storm front was blowing in Monday evening, creating a forecast for rain and wind. But the long-range forecast is more arid conditions. “The same ridge of high pressure is rebuilding,” said Jones, and he predicted the next seven to 10 days will again bring more warm, dry conditions.

Motorcyclist dies in crash

Collides with commercial truck on Downes Road A 24-year-old Abbotsford man whose motorcycle collided with a large commercial truck died in hospital Saturday afternoon. The crash occurred at about noon on Downes Road just east of Bradner Road in Abbotsford. The truck driver was headed west and was making a left turn into a driveway. The motorcyclist, riding a Kawasaki Ninja, had just turned east off Bradner Road, travelled around the blind O E VIDLINE corner and collided with the truck. YMCA projects especially attractive to municipal governments. “Building it is the cheap money,” he said. “It is expensive to build, but infinitely more expensive to operate.” He said the payroll alone, for the equivalent of 60 fulltime employees, will cost about $2.5 million per year. He said most municipal governments are looking for new ways of providing services to residents for the lowest cost, and many municipalities find the YMCA partnership attractive. He said the YMCA has done market research that asks the question “Is this going to matter to the people of Abbotsford.” and also works to gauge the level of support his organization will find from donors. He is encouraged by what he sees in Abbotsford on both counts. In addition to the full-time employment, the construction of the facility will bring the city 130 person-years worth of employment. A “rough outline” of the facility is a 60,000-square-foot building with a pool, multi-purpose gymnasiums and child care services. YMCA is the largest provider of child care in B.C. The roots of the YMCA are as an outreach organization targeting young Christian men, which began about 160 years ago. Now it serves the entire community, is in 125 countries, and “we reflect values common to all religions,” said Butz.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service has extended the community’s burning ban at least until Oct. 15, due to the record-breaking dry spell and the increase in the forest fire rating to “extreme.” Acting Fire Chief Dale Unrau said the ban could be extended if dry conditions continue. The City of Abbotsford’s fire service bylaw imposes an annual ban on all outdoor burning between June 1 and Sept. 30. Currently, there is a $500 fine for discarding burning substances, including cigarettes, and a $500 fine for burning during the fire ban. Unrau said that people who cause accidental fires can also be charged with the cost of battling the blaze or face criminal charges. “With the extreme dry conditions, citizens are advised to adhere to the burning ban and be extra-vigilant to prevent grass or forest fires,” Unrau said. Stewards of our waterways

Creeks and rivers support an interdependent web of life and we damage them at our peril. For much of the last century, we have done everything imaginable to destroy these critical waterways — burying them, altering their course, polluting them, diminishing their capacity to support life. It’s a wonder we still have functioning creeks and rivers and to which exhausted salmon still return to spawn. Nature’s resilience can explain why our creeks and rivers still teem with life. But there have been efforts made over the years to improve things and some humans deserve credit. Thanks to streamkeepers and other stewards, there are more kilometres of life-supporting habitat along these waterways and more fish in the once sterile creeks. Thanks to wise lawmakers, there are more regulations requiring industry to minimize the impact of

development and resource extraction on waterways, and cities are taking more responsibility and using best practices to protect waterways. Even the public is getting involved by cleaning up garbage during the Shoreline Clean-up, removing invasive species, planting native species and speaking up when problems arise. All it takes is one thoughtless move or a change in government or social attitudes, and all that hard work protecting our waterways can disappear. World Rivers Day was marked last Sunday. Hopefully, we made time to learn about our nearest creeks and rivers and take a walk along them, observing how they still bear life despite their proximity to industry and development. True, they are under threat day by day, but if each of us becomes a responsible steward, they have a greater chance of surviving into the next century. – Black Press

Other Hand There’s a rumour going around, abetted I’m told, by a councillor, that the City of Abbotsford is considering placing water meters on private wells. If that is true, bring it on, I say. To charge for something, you must guarantee supply and that will thrill everyone on Sumas Mountain who has had dry wells for last month or so, and with the continuing dry weather, can expect that condition to remain until at least the arrival of November rains. So rather than suffer through the inability to flush toilets, have showers or wash the dishes, those with dry wells will, under city operation, get new and deeper wells, or have the city pay for weekly visits of the water truck.

On top of that, none of us will ever have to worry about the pumps freezing in a cold winter ever again The city would be required to build us new heated pump houses and, of course, pay for the electricity to keep the pumps and heaters going. And, when the power goes out during a winter storm, which is not an infrequent occurrence up here on the mountain, crews will be johnny-onthe-spot to install propane heaters to keep all from freezing up while physically hauling buckets of water to the houses when the electric pumps are out of commission. I’m sure the union also supports this move, because it will mean many more workers will be needed to accomplish all this, along with a large contingent to actually read the water meters once they are installed. They’ll also need office staff to arrange for meter reading appointments since the wells are on private land, and those of us who have guard dogs will need to have them contained for safety reasons during those visits. If you are wondering if any of the

above makes sense, it doesn’t. For starters, the city does not own the water we draw into our wells. It actually belongs to the Crown. Everyone’s wells are located on private property. There are laws, I believe, against trespass.

Finally, just the costs of reading the individual meters would more than offset any “revenue stream” the city might think it will generate to assist its desperate need for more cash flow, let alone anything else they would be required to provide by this imposition. People who rely on wells first have to drill them, at a cost of anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000+, then they

have to build a pump house, install electric pumps, put in heaters and purchase pressure tanks. These costs have to be paid upfront, unlike those on a city water system whereby everybody contributes a small amount each year through their municipal taxes. I’d also suggest that, no matter how much one contributes to a city system, even paying water meter rates is significantly less than what it costs to create and operate a personal-use well. I’d also suggest that if the city brought a water system to us, most would consign their wells to history for the convenience of never having to worry again about supply. So, if the rumour has foundation and you want to charge for water, then bring it to us. Otherwise leave well enough alone, because harbouring any ill-conceived notions about the financial benefits of charging metering fees on private water systems is impractical nonsense.

Sit back and enjoy the ride Welcome to the land of more than plenty of buses – big ones, powerful ones, empty ones. While a lot of economies are scrambling for cover in a flood of dollar debt, not so Abbotsford. If you’re a newcomer to our beautiful city in the country, relax, enjoy. We have money to spare, the coffers are overflowing, loonies, toonies, millions. No need to buy a car because we run scores of nearly empty buses, all over town. In fact, they travel by my house every 20 minutes sometimes during the day, but don’t fret, there’s lots of room, with only

three or four riders enjoying their own limousine service. Yup, they fill our pristine air with black clouds and a gutty roar of power. Isn’t it wonderful, they’re so efficient – empty a lot of the day and night, so they are lighter. Who said smaller buses? Heck we’ve got happy taxpayers and subsidies which just keep the dollars rolling in. Hold on, here comes my own ride. Wow, more room than usual. I guess no one expects accountability, why should I? Give drivers proper respect

This morning I was in the McMillan area doing some shopping, at about 11:40. I drove out onto the street and there were school kids all over the place. I drove to the corner of McMillan and Old Yale Road where I tried to make a right-hand turn onto Yale Road. There was a fairly large group of

children standing around on the corner and some of them were at least for to five feet on the street and they would not move to let me turn. I had to swing out onto part of the other lane to get by. These were not small children – they were old enough to know better, and to know that they too have

some responsibility on the street, not only the driver, who ultimately gets the blame if an accident happens. So parents, if you want drivers to respect your children, you had better teach your children to give drivers the respect they deserve. Frank Zilinsky

Langley RCMP are trying to track down the owner of a large number of coins that were found in a vehicle being driven by a 30-year-old Abbotsford man. Langley RCMP officers working in the Aldergrove area on Aug. 21 pulled over a motorist whom they recognized as someone prohibited from driving. Police checks on the Ford Econoline van indicated the licence plates should be on an Oldsmobile Cutlass that was not registered. The officers discovered in the van a backpack with numerous coins from various countries. Neither the driver nor the passenger in the van claimed ownership of the backpack, and police said they cannot recommend charges for possession of stolen property. However, they would like to find the owner of the coins. Some of them are distinctive and are likely part of a collection. The owner of the coins, or anyone who can identify that person, is asked to call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.

Duffield to perform special concert Abbotsford recording artist Victoria Duffield has been named as the entertainer who will perform a special concert at a location selected as Canada’s most fun place to visit. Popular American musician John Fogerty, famous for his rockabilly-style inspiring songwriting, vocals and guitar skills, sold out Friday night’s concert at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. The night began with a pre-show barbecue and beer garden, featuring the dynamic Vancouver rock band The Deadwax Collective. Doors opened at 7 p.m. with soulful music performed by the new American rock group Lukas Nelson and The Promise of the Real. Nelson and his band played with energy and impassioned vocals, and their opening songs meshed well with Fogerty’s style of music and helped amp the crowd’s excitement. Before Fogerty came on stage, three large screens displayed a slide-show of his mu-

sical history. The bio consisted of many personal photographs. It was like getting a sneak peek into his family albums. Before Fogerty began his first song, the screens showed old interviews with him stating how much performing meant to him. True to his word, Fogerty stepped on stage and put on a great performance.

He sang many classic Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) hits, including music from the Cosmo’s Factory album, and his own songs like Centerfield. Fogerty impressed his fans with his wellknown guitar riffs, swamp-pop sounds and rock-roots style. He took time to interact with the crowd and tell personal stories about his music.

His connection with the audience was electric, and his powerful rhythms had everyone standing on their feet, swaying and singing to the music they had grown up with. There were plenty of pyrotechnics, from sparklers and strobe lights, to bursts of flames and smoke machines. The lighting matched the mood of the songs, ranging from fast-paced strobes to slow flickering lights. Fans did not want the night to end, and Fogerty was called back for an encore. The concert crowd consisted mostly of middle-aged faces, who knew Fogerty back when he was with CCR, which was popular during the late 1960s and early ’70s. Fogerty was the lead singer and guitarist for CCR, famous for its southern rock style, inspired by country and gospel music. CCR released their Mardi Gras album in 1972, and after receiving poor reviews and discord between band members, the band split. Fogerty became a solo artist in 1973 with his album The Blue Ridge Rangers. His solo journey was somewhat inconsistent at the start, but eventually his career kicked off again, especially with his 1985 album Centerfield. Fogerty has won many awards, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

A strong running game powered the Rick Hansen Hurricanes to a 36-21 victory over Seaquam in varsity AA football action. Reagan Doucette had 13 carries for 225 yards and two running touchdowns, and added a 44-yard touchdown reception. Jasnoor Dhaliwal had 16 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Alex Ho went 9-for-23, for 199 yards and a major, and also scored a running touchdown on a four-yard plunge. Pilots win in overtime

With a pair of wins, the Abbotsford Pilots improved to 4-1 in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League. The Pilots beat the Grandview Steelers 4-3 in overtime on Friday night at MSA Arena. Michael Tebbutt scored the overtime winner, and with two goals and an assist was named the player of the game. With four goals and four assists in five games, Tebbutt is the Pilots’ scoring leader. Ryan Parmar also had a goal and an assist.

On Thursday night, the Pilots beat the Mission City Outlaws 7-4. Devon Allenby led the offensive with a hat trick and an assist, Brady Lawlor and Dakota Schipper both had three assists, and Adam Rossi had a goal and an assist. The Pilots’ next game is Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. at the Aldergrove Community Arena, when they take on the Kodiaks. Their next home game will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. at MSA Arena, against the North Delta Devils.

Irving back at Heat camp Once the NHL lockout ends and the season gets going, Leland Irving will be in the running to back up the Calgary Flames’ starting goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, but for now he’s with the Heat. The Heat announced the addition of Irving to its roster of players attending its American Hockey League training camp last week. Irving played 39 games with the Heat during the 2011-12 season and seven games in the National Hockey League with the Calgary Flames. He has played in each of the Heat’s three seasons since the franchise joined the AHL in 2009, making 135 appearances and helping the club reach the Calder Cup playoffs in 2010 and 2012. Irving was named the Team MVP in the 2010-11 season where he posted eight shutouts, a 2.30 goals against average and a .913 save percentage.

The UFV Cascades men’s soccer team got a pair of ties over the weekend. They battled the No.1-CISranked University of Alberta to a 1-1 stalemate on a goal in the final minute of Saturday’s game. They also tied the Saskatchewan Huskies 2-2 on Friday, in Canada West men’s soccer action, at Exhibition Field in Chilliwack. The UCFV women came up with a pair of weekend shutout wins: 2-0 over Manitoba on Friday, and 3-0 over Winnipeg on Saturday. In both men’s games Mark Village of Abbotsford was outstanding in the Cascades net. Craig Robinson and Dalibor Plavsic scored against Saskatchewan, and Plavsic also got the tying goal on Saturday. In the women’s win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Kara Delwo and Paige Friesen, both of Abbotsford, scored. Maple Ridge’s Carly Neeson also tallied her fourth goal of the year. Neeson also scored against Manitoba, and Danika Snook of Chilliwack split the Bison defence and buried her chance. The Cascades displayed a great offensive performance, outshooting Manitoba 18 to 5. The women improved to 5-1-1 win the victories, and they are unbeaten in four straight conference games. The men are 1-2-3.

MARTENS Sarah Sarah Martens died September 2, 2012 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital after suffering a stroke eight days before. She was born October 18, 1913, the third of nine children, to Henry and Margaret (Klippenstein) Enns. Her birthplace was a tiny Mennonite village in Slavgorod Colony, Russia. In 1926 the family fled the growing tyranny of the Soviet Union, immigrating to Saskatchewan, where they lived a short time before moving to Yarrow, BC. The general poverty among immigrants of that time was such that Sarah never had a chance for education. Throughout her life, however, she was an avid and curious reader. As a child she worked side by side with adults in the enormous hop yards of the Fraser Valley. Later she worked for time as a housemaid in Chilliwack and Vancouver. Sarah married Jacob Martens July 30, 1938. From 1967 onward, the couple lived in Abbotsford. Their relationship was to endure through good times and bad until her beloved Jake died in 1984.
