Chili cook-off nets more dollars for playground

Eight-year-old Rhett Bramfield, a Grade 3 student at Rimbey Elementary School checks out the huge pot of chili from the school that was brought to the chili cook-off Sept. 14. The school’s chili turned out to be the voters’ choice as the best chili at the cook-off. Money raised at the chili cook-off will go towards a new school playground. Treena Mielke Photo

By Treena Mielke The perfect blend of seasoning and spices mixed with a healthy dose of strong school spirit has paid off in a big way for Rimbey Elementary School. The school won the Sept. 14 chili cook-off at Pas Ka Poo Park and the fundraiser also netted more than $1,600 for a new playground. Winning the cook-off, in which 14 people participated, was wonderful, said principal Jodi Bramfield. “It was a surprise, but we have such a wonderful school spirit and that helped,” she said. School staff begin cooking the big pot of chili the morning of the day of the cook-off. “Everyone brings some ingredient. The whole staff contributes,”

Bramfield said. The school principal remained tight lipped about what, if any, secret ingredient is used to make the chili award winning. “My lips are sealed,” she said. The chili cook-off is one of several fundraisers held in the last few years to raise money for the playground and about $25,000 is still needed. The present playground, which contains monkey bars, swings, climbing platforms and a slide, was built several years ago and pressure treated wood was used, which could expose students to harmful chemicals. Last year the school raised close to $14,000 for the playground through a comedy night featuring two standup comedians.
