Faithful old Ajax to the rescue Erin Haluschak Black Press

COMOX — Thirteen-year-old boxer Ajax is more than Tom Davies’ best friend, companion, or a partner for a hike in the woods — he credits him with helping him fight for his life. Davies, an experienced outdoorsman and hunter, who lives in Comox but travels around the province, said his dog’s canine instincts kicked in at just the right time last month during a bear charge near Francois Lake in central B.C. He describes Ajax as a “comedian who was raised in the city and has only spent the

past two-and-a-half years in the woods. “He is not very serious about things other than walks and dinner, explained Davies, who himself has faced more than 1,000 previous bear encounters, and more than 100 bear charges. He said on Aug. 5, he and Ajax were about six kilometres into a hike on Savory Ridge when they came across a large female black bear with two cubs. The female barked and sent the cubs up a fir tree, and Davies noted he could tell the bear was about to charge. “When you go into the woods, you can’t assume everything will be a rosy walk, he said. “You have to

I’m not sure what she thought at this moment, he explained as Ajax began running towards the bear. “Did she think he was a predator himself or was it his grey face sending the message of years of life experience in survival? The bear stopped the charge and turned, while Ajax ran up her back and bit her between the shoulders. The bear bucked and

She was doing everything she was supposed to do. Despite the charge, Davies said the incident will not keep him out of the woods. “I’ve been doing this for the better part of 50 years. Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com It was fun year fishing for pinks on the Campbell River. The season has come to an end and the pools were full of the fish that the locals love to catch using lures or flies. In early September I fished the old Aspen pool and the males were hitting green or blue bodied flies. The majority of anglers use pink flies. When the Kyle & Jake Smith anglers are gone the divers search the river for lures that were lost in the river. Ben Luck will close for the season at Discovery Pier but the fishing will continue. This year bigger fish were caught and fishing was generally slower than the previous year. The largest fish of the year came in at 42.5 pounds. Steve Meszaros got hid 25 pounder on September 11th. Jamie Dunn put in his time fishing from the pier and caught 4 this year. A total of 31 Tyee were caught this year at the Campbell River Tyee pool and the season ended with Owen Lagos catching the biggest Tyee of 43 pounds on August 29th using a plug. Few fish were caught in September. Cathy Moulton hooked a 32 and Brett Gardner a 30.5.The cchums are coming and the areas that ssome are being ccaught are Deep Water Bay, Plumper aand Browns Bay. The 11th Pink Salmon Annual Haig Brown Festival is Sunday September 30th.There are fly tieing demonstrations live music and this is a great social event for the public to attend.

Quadra kittens in need of help Two unusual medical emergencies have drained Quadra Cat Rescue funds. Two homeless black and white kittens found wandering in the Pidcock Road area this summer required emergency surgery to remove an infected, deformed eyeball. “These kittens were brought in just in time,” said Valerie van Veen of Quadra Cat Rescue. “Dogwood Veterinary Hospital checked the kittens to ensure they had a good chance of survival and performed the successful surgeries, but

MidWeek / September 26, 2012 5 Q. If you start with YOU as a single person, or a 1, then raise this number to 5 people, 15, 50, 150, 500 and 1500, what’s happening here communally? A. These are the groupings in a typical person’s life, beginning with 5 intimates, 15 best friends, 50 good friends, 150 friends, 500 acquaintances and finally 1500 people that he or she can recognize, says evolutionary anthropologist Robin Dunbar in “New Scientist” magazine. We humans are a bonded species, living amid family and friends in social networks that have dramatic effects on our lives, influencing how we eat, what we wear, even how we laugh. Based on the group size of other social primates and on human brain size, we could expect our own group to swell to about 150, or about the limit “where we can still have a real

relationship involving trust and obligation.” The 150 figure, called “Dunbar’s number,” is surprisingly common in human social organizations: “Historically, it was the average size of English villages. It is also the ideal size for church parishes and is the size of the basic military unit, the company,” Dunbar explains. Contrary to the urban myth that many people have 1000 or more friends

Bill and Rich Sones Strange But True

on Facebook, the typical user actually has 120-130 friends-about the same as offline. “Of course, anyone can sign up 500 or even 5000 friends online, but how many of these are real

friends who would help out if the person were in a fix?” Q. How many colors can the average person see? A. Most of us are “trichromats” with three different types of cones, each able to distinguish roughly 100 shades of color, for a total response of 100 x 100 x 100 = roughly 1 million different colors, says Veronique Greenwood in “Discover” magazine. Taking one cone

away results in a “dichromat,” with the number of possible color combinations dropping by a factor of 100, down to 10,000. Yet living among us are believed to be “tetrachromats” with a fourth cone, letting them see 100 times more colors, or 100 million--some shades so subtle they have no names. “And because perceiving colors is a personal experience, they would have no

way of knowing they see far beyond what we consider the limits of human vision.” In fact, some observers believe that the natural world may lack sufficient color varieties for the brain to learn to use a fourth cone. Q. What’s it take to create a 40-foothigh flaming “kaboom” that used to be a car--a la Hollywood? A. Plenty of art and science as

well as mortars, says Shane Snow in “Wired” magazine. Cinematically, even a small fender-bender can trigger an inferno, whereas in reality cars don’t usually explode, even if driven off a cliff or the gas tank gets hit by a volley of bullets. “It takes at least 200-man-hours to prep for something that lasts four seconds onscreen,” special effects expert Drew Jiritano told the magazine.

PUBLIC NOTICE

5x7.5 RECALL AND INITIATIVE ACT

This notice is published pursuant to section 4 of the Recall and Initiative Act. Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The petition will be issued to proponent Dana Larsen on Monday, November 19, 2012 and signature sheets must be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, February 18, 2013. The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act.

Initiative Advertising: Individuals or organizations who sponsor initiative advertising, other than the proponent and registered opponents, must register with the Chief Electoral Officer before they conduct or publish initiative advertising. Registration applications are available from Elections BC. Who May Sign the Petition: Registered voters as of Monday, November 19, 2012 may sign the initiative petition. Individuals may only sign the petition once, and must sign the petition sheet for the electoral district in which they are registered at the time of signing. Signed petitions are available for public inspection.

ELECTIONS BC

Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the Province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

For More Information: The initiative application and draft Bill are available for public inspection on the Elections BC website and at the Elections BC office at the address below.

source. “I had to go hunt up the fishermen,” said Alley, who spent several days at the local marina waiting for lucky anglers to return with salmon, then coaxing them to hold the fish in a variety of positions while she snapped pictures. “Normally, I paint forest scenes. This was a learning curve.” Alley, a resident of nearby Coal Harbour, proved a quick study. More than two dozen people invited to an unveiling of the mural

at the Port Hardy Visitors’ Information Centre Friday night were wowed by her bright, active mural, which spans the length of the interior front wall. “We had a lady in earlier who just stared and stared,” said Yana Hrdy, visitor centre manager. “She told me, ‘If I stand here for a few more minutes, the fish are going to start swimming.’ “What a nice compliment for the artist.” One corner of the Cont. on Page 10

Artist got it right From Page 8 mural, which reaches upward in a broad “A” shape to a height of more than eight feet at the peak of the ceiling, is devoted to the life cycle of the salmon. But the full painting shows much more, including orcas, starfish and sea urchins, and a wide variety of highly detailed aquatic plants. It even includes a shipwrecked fishing boat and a small, distant view of the Hardy Bay shoreline. “Jeanne just went above and beyond,” said Steve Lacasse, president of the Quatse

Salmon Stewardship Centre board. “It’s beautiful.” Lacasse, a veteran diver and diving instructor who has seen his share of Vancouver Island’s underwater seascape, said Alley got it just right. And she will have plenty of additional research under her belt the next time she tackles an aquatic theme. “She’s signed up for our next diving class,” Lacasse said with a laugh. The mural was supported by a wide range of North Island donors, beginning

with Dona Koch, a resident of Eagle Ridge Manor who kickstarted the project with a suggestion and a donation. The Port Hardy Lions Club, Port Hardy Rotarty and North Island Kinsmen all contributed, and Hardy Builders Supply and Spike-top Cedar contributed materials. Alley was chosen based on previous work she had done for the Salmon Centre, including bird paintings and illustrations for the centre’s “Critter” book. “I knew she had this capability,” said

Annemarie Koch, who helped coordinate the project. “I knew she could do it if she put her mind to it. She saw it as a challenge.” Additional support came from Kari Watkins, who is affiliated with both Port Hardy Chamber of Commerce and the Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre board, and from Alley’s husband, Andrew Hory. Hory measured, cut and prepared the birch panels and helped install them high on the visitors’ centre wall. “It was hard getting

Kathleen Bolivar, Jeanne Alley and Dale Skiles look up at Alley’s mural while posing for a photo by Annemarie Koch. At left is Alley’s husband, Andrew Hory. Photo by J.R. Rardon it to fit,” said Hory. “This building isn’t square. I understand they moved it here from Holberg years ago; that may have something to do with it.”

But the end result was a hit with all the visitors at Friday’s reception. And Alley herself was pleased at the response after months of agonizing and second-guessing

herself over the painting’s details. “I guess I look at it and I’m amazed I did something that big,” she said. “I’m glad for the reaction people are having.”
