Former journalist joins Village hall Sundance Topham joined the Village of Cumberland last fall, replacing Anja Nurvo as chief administrative officer.

Scott Stanfield Record Staff The father of two had spent the previous five years in local government administration in the District of Wells, most recently as CAO. He was also a senior communications adviser for the B.C. Pension Corporation in Victoria.

Before embarking on a career in local government, Topham had been a reporter and editor at newspapers in various B.C. towns, including Salt Spring Island and Quesnel.

He grew up near the latter, later attending college and university in Victoria.

Topham has a diploma in communications from Camosun College in Victoria. He has three courses remaining in the Diploma of Local Government Management program

through the UVic School of Public Administration. He is a member of the Local Government Management Association of B.C. Topham and his wife Megan have a nine-year-old daughter named Ocean and a seven-year-old son named Soul.

“We really enjoy Cumberland,” said Topham, a die-hard Canucks fan. “It’s a great village with a ton of character. We were attracted to the community due to its proximity to the outdoors, the large number of young families, and the interesting arts and culture of the area. To be two minutes from a world-class trail network in an historic village with a diverse and positive group of people is a pretty ideal situation.

Free, family, harvest-themed fun with a Cumberland twist It’s what the Foggy Mountain Fall Fair — formerly dubbed Blackberries, Apples and Bears — is all about.

The fair features a host of events from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 6 at First and Dunsmuir. A warm-up party with Geoff Berner is scheduled for Oct. 5 at the Waverley Hotel.

The popular Pie of the Year contest involves the entire community in an oldfashioned fall fair activity.

Bakers of all ages, skills and experience are invited to share their talents in hopes of winning the Blue Ribbon for 2012. Prizes are also issued for the most creative entry and the People’s Choice.

Valley residents are invited to bring surplus apples or pears and try their hand at the old-fashioned apple press. Bring home some juice for the freezer — just

be sure to bring jars or bags.

Stansbury’s Guest House offers a “home away from home” feel, according to Gwen Stansbury, who owns the business with her husband Scott.

Located at 3284 Second St. in Cumberland, it’s off the main drag, but only a block away from the Village’s downtown.

The Stansburys bought the property in 2008, completely renovated the house which was in disrepair, and just completed an addition about a year ago.

They now offer two full suites — one three bedroom and one two — for short-term and longer-term rentals.

Each suite is fully equipped with a kitchen, laundry facilities, cable, and WiFi. Barbecue, deck and yard access are also shared among the suites.

Scott notes privacy, comfort and a relaxed atmosphere describe the Stansbury’s Guest House, and visitors “can park their car and just stroll” because of the location of the property.

Gwen says the Stansburys focus on providing “little extras” to make their visitors feel at home during their stay.

“We like to always be here to greet them — we don’t like leaving a key,” she says of when visitors first arrive.

Credit Union history dates back six decades Erin Haluschak Record Staff In 1951, 15 residents came together to pool their money to purchase the building at 2717 Dunsmuir Ave., not knowing that 61 years later, their business would have more than $24 million in assets.

The charter members of the Cumberland and District Credit Union who came together in February of that year may not have known the financial institution they created would soon have more than 1,900 members, and eventually join the longest-running credit union in B.C. Prior to a merger in August between the Cumberland Credit Union and First Credit Union, the business located in the heart of the Village found its home 57 years ago in a building rich in history.

The building originally erected on the site of the credit union was built in 1894 for Joseph McPhee and J. Moore, and was utilized as a three-storey

general store and market. In 1910, it became The Furniture Store.

Following the 1933 fire, it was rebuilt less than half the size of the original.

In 1955, the founding members of the credit union purchased the building and later moved into it when Searles Shoes moved to Courtenay.

Fast-forward 61 years, and besides a name change following the merger, the company remains the same.

The combined organization with First Credit Union and Cumberland and District Credit Union has four credit union branches, six insurance branches, approximately $225 million in credit union assets, $100 million in wealth management assets and more than 10,000 members all operating under the First Credit Union name.

Renee Andor Record Staff “I like people to feel like they’re going to their mom’s for breakfast or lunch, and feel at home and comfortable,” said Hamilton, who owns Mar’s and goes by Mar rather than Marlene, hence the restaurant name.

Depending on how well your mom cooks, it does feel like going home for a meal.

Located at 2744 Dunsmuir Ave., this restaurant was once a house. It was built in 1896 for prosperous Comox Valley farmer William Coates Rennison.

The main floor has been transformed into a restaurant, but the building still gives the feeling of a quaint home. In fact, Hamilton lives in a suite upstairs.

She greeted me with a big smile as I walked in the door, and she actually does the majority of serving at the restaurant herself.

I started off with Hali Bites — halibut morsels crusted in panko and sesame with chile-lime aioli — for my lunch, which were perfectly crispy outside and moist inside.

The chile-lime aioli was absolutely delicious, with just the right amount of heat, and a nice citrus kick from the lime.

After some tough decisions, I chose the Artisan Mediterranean Chicken Sandwich with the soup of the day as my main.

It was a good choice.

The mushroom soup that accompanied my sandwich was light but satisfying and packed with fresh mushroom chunks.

The sandwich was almost overflowing with large pieces of chicken nestled with

roasted tomato, spinach, pesto and asiago cheese inside a large piece of delicious rustic bread.

It was hearty but healthy and fresh tasting — while I was eating the Hali Bites I saw Hamilton pop out the front door of the restaurant, and when she came back a moment later she was carrying a fresh loaf

Though she said she normally gets her whole order of bread from the bakery in the morning instead of running over for one loaf, everything she offers has a strong focus on fresh and local.

The bread she doesn’t get from the bakery across the road is made in-house; the sausages and bacon she serves come from Cumberland Village Meats; and almost all her sauces are made right there starting with the fresh fruit or vegetable.

“Almost everything is made in-house from scratch. We make our own marinara sauce right from fresh tomatoes — we roast the tomatoes here,” said Hamilton. “Even our mayonnaise is made in-house, all of our salad dressings are made from scratch.”
