Entertainment offers taste of home for immigrants, while drawing new fans

he’s a pop superstar with millions of fans, 17 No. 1 hits and album sales records of over 100 million. She’s even earned accolades from her country’s president.

But most people in Richmond haven’t even heard of Valeriya.

The Russian singer appeared at River Rock Show Theatre last year thanks in part to Lev Popok, a Richmond resident who immigrated from Russia 25 years ago and now volunteers his time to lure Russian entertainers to Metro Vancouver stages.

He’s not the only one sharing culture from his homeland with local audiences. A variety of promoters regularly bring entertainers here from Asia—be it the Philippines, China or Hong Kong. Most sing in dialects other than Canada’s two official languages.

But Lev Popok said unlike many fans, Russians have a love of music first, lyrics second—so he doesn’t see language as a barrier in music. the richmond

“You go to listen to the music and how the voice sounds. It doesn’t matter what language.”

Valeriya is one of the more famous Russian artists to perform here. Her May concert, part of a seven-stop North American tour, was just the second time she had performed in Canada—a place, she told The Review, where she could still reach new fans.

“I’ve been having a long, happy career in my homeland. I have millions of fans there and I’m still feeling I could achieve more,” she said at the time.

Popok said it’s a challenge drawing audiences, since the Russian community is spread out in Metro Vancouver. But some of the foreign entertainers—who include singers, dancers, comedians and actors—have broader appeal. On Oct. 30, for example, a famous Russian showman will perform in Vancouver along with a group of ballerinas, whose art needs no interpretation.

And when Russian singer-songwriter Vitas performed at River Rock, nearly half the audience was Chinese. Vitas is known for a vocal range of five octaves and carries the nickname of “Prince of the Dolphin Voice” in China, home of many Vitas fans.

mental Stage Theatre to bring its plays to Canada.

On Sunday, the theatre company mounted its June Bride musicalcomedy production at River Rock in Mandarin. The following day, the Hong Kong-based cast and crew performed the controversial drama I’m Chairman Mao’s Bitch at Gateway Theatre. Although actors spoke Cantonese throughout the play—which is banned in China— English subtitles were offered.

“The local shows are a big attraction for the Chinese-Canadians in Richmond, especially those with interest in Hong Kong-centric entertainment,” said Tam. “Spring-Time’s productions are an alternative source of live entertainment for this kind of crowd as most live performances coming from Hong Kong to Vancouver are celebrity concerts. Spring-Time seeks to attract fans of drama and not just a Chinese audience.”

Tam said drama is a longstanding part of Hong Kong culture, and finding contemporary drama originating from the harbour city can prove difficult in Canada—hence Spring-Time’s popularity here.

“We just came back from Calgary where we performed both shows at the University Theatre. Most audience members had bought tickets for both shows. At the end of the June Bride musical, we received a standing ovation and a call for encore.”

Richmond-raised rapper writing what’s ‘true to me’ Longtime solo artist now a member of Souls Rest, a hip hop jazz trio with a new record

A

rmed with microphones and jazz tones, Ben Vlasveld and his crew are making music quite unlike anything else.

Also known as abide.n, Vlasveld, born and raised in Richmond, is one of the emcees behind the hip hop jazz trio Souls Rest, which just released its first album as a trio, Better Weapon.

Their underground music is void of most mainstream hip hop lyrical trappings of

money and power, instead offering honest rhymes without a parental advisory warning.

Originally formed by A.son and DJ Philamonic in Liverpool, England in 2003, Souls Rest settled into Canadian life in 2008, releasing the Two Minutes EP in 2009, followed by the full-length album of extra.ordinary.love in 2011. Vlasveld, a 33-year-old Richmond High grad, joined the pair earlier this year, giving the trio a new makeup: two emcees and one DJ. The band is now working to promote material from its new 12-track record, which boasts soul, rhythm and hip hop turntablism. The entire album can be heard on the band’s website (soulsrest.com).

For Vlasveld, hip hop and breakdancing attracted him at an early age. He performed in numerous live shows before 2002, when he “decided to pick up

the mic and do this for real.” He’s been a solo artist since then.

He’s also collaborated with others, including a crew called Word on the Street, which stages concerts once a month in downtown Vancouver.

Besides his work with Souls Rest, the rapper is also a solo artist, having released a 14-track underground hip hop record, Love and Significance, earlier this year. Lyrical, musical and soulful, his solo work lands on Christian themes and offers plenty of honesty and optimism. Hear it online at abiden.bandcamp.com.

Explain your name, abide.n?

“I chose my emcee name from a scripture in the Christian Bible, paraphrased: he who abides in me shall bear much fruit, without me he can do nothing. I took the word abiding and kind of gave it a hip hop twist.

My name pretty much

means that I abide in divine inspiration and strength to produce words of life and to try to live a positive, influential lifestyle.”

What’s your vision for Souls Rest? Does that differ from your own as a solo artist?

“My vision for Souls Rest is to really just shed light through this art form, put on a good live show, and connect with people through the music. It doesn’t differ so much from my vision as a solo artist; it’s just my solo material is a little more introspective.”

Your lyrics are a departure from mainstream hip hop.

There’s no guns— there’s God. What’s your approach?

“I just try to lyrically emanate what comes out of my heart and hope that someone can relate. I like to watch movies that are true stories and I think that when people see a good movie and then find out later it was a

true story it seems so much better. That’s my approach. What I write is all very true to me, catered with beats I love.”

What are you most proud of as an artist so far?

“I know this might

sound a little fake but the thing I’m most proud of was when Souls Rest and I got to play a concert in the Matsqui prison in Abbotsford for maximum security prisoners.”

What’s next for you?

“Keep writing, keep reading and create music with Souls Rest.

We just came out with our first full album since I joined the group, and we’re working on a smashing live show for fans that enjoy our music.”

View Gallery is a ‘hidden jewel’ Church serves to show works of local artists

rand works of art are everywhere in churches across Europe and to some extent in North America.

But an art gallery inside a church? That’s not nearly as commonplace.

That marriage seems to be working at The View Gallery at Fraserview Church on Mellis Drive near No. 5 Road and Cambie.

The brainchild of artist Barb Bowen, who serves as the gallery’s curator, she calls it one of Richmond’s “hidden jewels.”

It was seven years ago when Bowen began attending the church, at 11295 Mellis Dr., that she saw the bare walls of the church, and envisioned it as a space where Richmond and area artists could display their works.

She’d seen it work at other locations, including First Baptist on Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver, University Chapel near the University of B.C., and the Unitar-

ian church on Oak Street, where Bowen also presented a show.

With the church’s blessing, The View Gallery was born, and over the years more than 40 shows have been held, featuring artists such as Tanya Bone, Larry Tillyer, Kristi Molnar, Adrienne Moore, Loraine Wellman, Margreth Fry, Jodie Blaney as well as local art teachers Sid Akselrod, Jo Noble and Clare Scott.

Every six weeks, a new show is introduced, anything from paintings to calligraphy, quilts, photography, posters and prints.

“I think we’ve lost the art of really focussing on that more,” Bowen said of the inclusion of works of art inside churches.

Fraserview Church is already host to two congregations, and also serves as a community centre, hosts concerts, funerals and weddings.

So why not add art gallery to the resume.

“It’s a stunning church, probably one of the nicest in Richmond.”

Bowen said among the new shows around the corner are “Macro Miniatures of nature attached to logs and a group show celebrating the age old art of paint-by-number,” she said.

The free event is one of 60 activities marking the special celebration of culture weekend, Sept. 28 to 30.

Lai’s Farm-to-Feast Cookout is in conjunction with Richmond Museum’s Garden City: Richmond’s Agricultural Legacy exhibition.

The third annual Culture Days is a coast-to-coast movement aimed at raising awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

Other free activities in Richmond this weekend include workshops in digital photography, origami, Chinese painting and chigiri-e (Japanese torn paper art).

Thanks for supporting Grand Prix of Art Editor: Mark Glavina, owner of Phoenix Artworks did it again! He sponsored another successful Grand Prix of Art. Sat. Sept 22, the streets of Steveston came alive with plein air artists!

From youths to seniors, paint brushes loaded, they waited for the Gulf of Georgia’s ‘start’ whistle from their drawn locations at 10 a.m. We would stroll amongst them until the 1 p.m. whistle blew and they laid down their brushes. It was amazing to witness the talent, live.

I saw hundreds of pedestrians, Grand Prix maps in hand, intent on seeing as many of the 70 artists as possible, happy with that challenge. From Britannia Heritage Shipyards to Garry Point, the public formed audiences around the artists, many of whom were happy to answer questions and engage. Some, new to plein air, were quieter. All rose to the occasion to produce memorable work.

Back to the shipyards to frame, pass their paintings to volunteers who hung them in the Chinese Bunkhouse and then the judging by Robert Genn, Mike Svob and Kim Somerville. A delicious lunch was prepared (thank you Davood and Eileen Khatami amd Blake Davidson!) and served as musicians entertained us, followed by the presentation of prizes and the Gray Cup to the winner, Elsa Bluethner. The gallery was then open to the public Saturday afternoon and Sunday where many bought and took home a little piece of Steveston, some with a story attached! It took a team of more than 50 volunteers in co-operation with Mark to make this event such a phenomenal success.

A bunny writes Editor: I am a Minoru Park bunny. I was either born here or dropped off here. I sure thought my life in the park would be fun. Oh, but was I wrong.

I am constantly hiding from the cruel attempts of kids and dogs chasing, harassing, and poking at me. They think this is fun. I do not.

So here I go again hiding under bushes, sheds and cars because I am exhausted from fear, waiting for nightfall to get relief from all that harassment. What did I ever do to deserve this? I am an innocent creature that needs to be respected.

Lentil soup beats shark fin Editor: Judging from the amount of letter writing which has expressed our concern for protecting certain species of shark, this is a topic that has people stirred up.

I am appalled to be told by restaurateur David Chung that in his culture, serving shark fin soup to someone is necessary to show the sincerity of your gratitude. Necessary, really? I hope we are all civilized and educated enough to know how to show gratitude and sincerity in ways that do not require injury to animals (sharks).

Inspired by people she sees reading on Toronto’s transit system, Wilson has been perfectly described as a “literary voyeur.”

Creating microfictions or snippet stories based on her creative imaginings of what the transit readers’ lives are like, we are pulled into the very private worlds of men and women, young and old. Beside each microfiction is a description of the reader she’s observing, as well as the title and author of the book they’re reading.

She often includes the page number too, since she’s presumably sitting right beside them.

The stories are bold and sweet, soft and startling speculations about lives that Wilson intersects with only briefly. I’ve never read anything like this before and I found it a totally delicious and accessible way to read fiction.

Wilson is clearly a sharp observer of life, and possesses a poet’s soul.

Referring to them as “sightings”, the author susses out each reader and the book he or she is reading, and then creates an intuitive story that reflects what she imagines about them.

And she does it in less than one page. Sometimes even in just one sentence, like the piece called “Esther” which goes like this: “His mother’s poodle is named after Esther, his great aunt who left the monastery in her 50s to study reproductive medicine.”

While the reader is described as a “Caucasian male in his mid-30s, with short black hair and stubble, wearing black jeans, black turtleneck, and grey pinstriped suit jacket,” I’m not sure his physi-

cal characteristics are what prompted the microfiction. The book he’s reading though – The Origin of Species

by Nino Ricci – is more likely what spawned the idea. Either way, it works brilliantly. Talk about less is more.

Wilson’s observations are often clever and wry, like those seen in the piece called “Grace”: “The minister was the first redhead the boy had ever seen naked, his body hair glowing in the morning sun, shocking the lake’s surface, afloat beside the boy’s mother, the first woman he’d ever seen naked and swimming with their minister.”

This, having emanated from a description of the reader as a “Caucasian male, early 50s, with long face, wavy, grey hair parted down the middle, “I Am Salman Rushdie” button pinned on North Face jacket, wearing red jeans and white sneakers,” who was reading The God Delusion.

I guess another name for Wilson’s writing could be micro-speculative fiction. Whatever you call it, it’s contagious and unique. Seen Reading is great for those who don’t have hours to read a novel, but still want to escape into fiction. Perfect for your bus ride to work.

Making art with music Ted Hesketh is now ‘painting music’ based on a unique creative process

D

azzling a small audience with his fingers, Ted Hesketh plays a guitar like he’s being reacquainted with an old friend. Colourful flamenco music flows in the online video that shows the Steveston resident’s enthusiasm for music.

It’s an energy he also carries into composing, educating and painting. And doing all is key to his “harmonic balance.”

“They are all interconnected and I am constantly learning from the relationships and correlations that reveal themselves,” he said.

Born in Vancouver, Hesketh spent most of his formative years in White Rock before landing in Richmond in 2000. He’s been making and teaching music for a half century—since picking up a guitar at age 10—and he’s wellknown for music education workshops and resource materials.

He’s equally dedicated to his

other artistic pursuits, namely painting, which he said goes hand-in-hand with music.

“Painting is my greatest joy, but playing music with my friends is my biggest thrill.”

Today Hesketh is “painting music”—a creative process he developed over the last two decades.

“Imagine a beautiful mountain landscape painting emerging from a Mozart melody, or conversely, a beautiful landscape painting creating a beautiful melody. Sounds bizarre I know, but that is exactly what I and two of my music composition students are creating.”

Live music performances today are mostly limited to private functions, but most of Hesketh’s artwork can be viewed at his studio gallery in Steveston (21111675 7th Ave., 778-297-2112).

How are music and visual art connected?

“Music and art are governed by the same harmonic rules, but are just perceived by different senses.

“Music is really a celebration of nature. Consider the Swiss yodeller and the Inuit throat singer.

The melodic flow of their songs correlate directly with their natural environment. Connect the stem heads from the notation of the yodeller’s song, chances are the line created from connecting the dots will resemble the profile

of some part of the Alps. Connect the stem heads or dots from the music score of an Inuit throat singer’s song, chances are the line created will resemble the flat Arctic landscape that surrounds the Inuit.

“This natural fact can now be used as template to compose music in a fraction of the time it would take otherwise.”

You’ve worked with many young musicians, what advice do you have for those who want a career in the arts?

“Ultimately, your best teacher is nature, providing you know what questions to ask. Learn also to enjoy teaching, by cultivating patience and understanding. You will learn much about yourself as you will grow in knowledge and you will also be passing knowledge on. The outcome is that you will eventually discover your own personality and voice as an artist, as a consequence.”

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment?

“I know in my heart, that when I die, I will do so without any regrets. Also, I would have to say my Colour of Music model I created based on Isaac Newton’s theories of colour and music.

This model has proven to be an invaluable template and resource for creating music from art and art from music.”

New bridge connects Canada Line to Aberdeen Project corridor will feature artwork and a dragon design

new 30-foot walkway was installed at the Aberdeen station of the Canada Line Tuesday morning.

When it opens for use early next year, the Bing Thom-designed span will link Canada Line riders to a Michael Green Architect-styled 200-foot corridor to be lined with various artistic and interactive elements and with a dragon theme.

The bridge and corridor will invite travellers to Aberdeen Square’s new retail and office complex, and Aberdeen Centre mall.

Early Tuesday morning, a special 60-tonne crane was brought in to attach the cantilevered bridge, which is connected to the still-under-construction Aberdeen Square retail and office complex on one side, and the Aberdeen station of the Canada Line on the other.

Technically, the bridge isn’t physically connected to the Canada Line station.

That’s because, explained site superintendent Tyler Brown, the two structures on opposite sides of the span must be able to move independently in the event of an earthquake.

Brown said a team of 15 people, including welders and iron workers, were needed to install the steel eight-tonne bridge that’s about 14 feet tall and 30 feet long and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to build. By the time the glass walls and ceiling are installed, that bill could reach $1 million, Brown said.

TransLink spokesperson Drew Snider said the span stands to benefit Canada Line users, the developer, and retailers at the mall.

“We are paying for the faregates, and visitors won’t have a long walk to get to Aberdeen Centre,” Leung said.

The Project Corridor will feature the works of artists, and plans call for the incorporation of an undulating dragonlike design and a slide for children.

Leung expects construction at Aberdeen Square to be completed by the first quarter of 2013.

Audiences can expect music, singing, martial arts and acting in each performance, which follows the traditions of Southern China’s Cantonese culture.

Shows are at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the chapel, 6540 Gilbert Rd. Tickets are $20 for adults and $18 for students and seniors. Seating is limited; organizers recommend buying tickets in advance by calling 604-276-4300.

I

n the middle of his fourth year of philosophy at UBC, Kevin Byrne is the one local I call “philosopher poet.”

He immediately grabs my attention when I see him recite “A Noble Cause” delivered at Vancouver Poetry Slam.

His tongue, like the speed of a pen scribbling quickly catches up with his wit and is company to strong delivery of verse. He describes his journey through the philosophers as “reading the chronicle of human thought.”

Kevin sees that what makes things true is the knowledge that lies in coherent sets and webs of belief for humans to translate into tools which ultimately gives us power.

He cites Kurt Vonnegut’s words from Time Quake where Vonnegut is exploring the repetition of actions, the concept of determinism and the idea that we have no free will. Kevin repeats the sentiment from Time Quake— “we are all here to help each other through this thing, whatever it is.”

Here he writes “Wonder before Record”: There is great beauty to a black page.

Limitless potential weaves tight to the fibres when left untouched.

To look on one, is to see, the moment before, every creation that ever will come.

What a joy it would be, to wonder forever in that ever before,

content there, and without itch; but I, am compelled.

My pen presses the page despite consequence and these marks slash, wonder once alive shrivels forgotten, once possible shrinks and shatters as I funnel what remains with hope; hope, hope that I might frame this corpseless dead survived.

I write with faith these words will wind me back to wonder, and decrypt the mysteries dumbing tongue and numbing mind; then as, does this creation compensate potential it destroyed? or can one even recreate wonder once enjoyed?

From a young age he proclaims he wants to be more than human, to bear witness to a searing desire to experience the power of his imagination. He is hopeful that indeed the human imagination can find new ways of understanding through the use of the ultimate tool, the human brain and its endless ability to recreate through neuro-plasticity.

Through performance weather sport or drama he needs to embody an idea, to not just observe it passively in his mind but experience it deeply in his body and being.

He was encouraged in high school by Annie Rough and his creative writing teacher Jeremy Hepner.

Byrne vibrates with a vigorous energy that spills out as we discuss meaning and what humans value. Unlike the premise in

Chaos lives up to soccer moniker Play reflects positively on the ‘beautiful game’

by Don Fennell Sports Editor Known worldwide as the beautiful game, when played at its best soccer lives up to its moniker.

Even at the grassroots level.

Sunday’s match between Richmond Chaos and Delta United, for the outright lead in Division 3 of the Metro Women’s Soccer League at Hugh Boyd Park, may have lacked the fanfare of a professional game, but the pinpoint passing and strong defence was symbolic of quality play.

Eventual 2-0 winners, Chaos was held off the scoresheet for much of the first half

by United’s commitment to defend.

“We got shots, but not good shots,” said Chaos coach Al Groff.

But thanks to some great team play, Chaos finally got the goal they needed just before halftime.

In a change of pace, it was outside midfielder Tanisha Sandhu who sent fellow midfielder Jenny Lyons in all alone on the Delta keeper.

Typically, most of Lyons’ scoring chances are set up by Erin Lee with whom she played youth soccer.

“It’s amazing watching them and their sixth-sense knowing where the other is going to be,” said Groff. “It’s like poetry in motion.”

Replicating the magic, striker Kelsey Lawrence was set free on a great lead pass by centremidfielder Natalie Sczerkowsky for the insurance goal at the midpoint of the second half.

Lawrence found an extra gear to dribble by the covering defender and then the keeper.

Equal to the Chaos’ offensive flair was its defensive prowess.

Thanks to the play of Sarah Little, Alexis Forde, Andrea Bertram, Victoria Groff and Lydia Pengilley, it’s understandable if Chaos keeper Julia Badock was a little bored.

“One of our dads (Trevor Bakken) used to be a goalie and said if he had those five in front of him he could still be playing,” chuckled Al Groff.

In a dominating display of offensive flair, at times seemingly maneuvering the puck at will, the Sockeyes skillfully earned a 5-1 Pacific International Junior Hockey League victory over the Port Moody Panthers. If not for Port Moody goaltender Angus Redmond, whose own play was of the spectacular variety, their 55-shot total may well have produced double the number of goals.

“I thought we really carried the play, (but Redmond) was outstanding,” said Richmond head coach Aaron Wilbur, whose team will

be seen as a surprise. But the level at which he’s performed while splitting the goaltending with incumbent Kootenay Alder has been nothing short of stellar.

“Payton hasn’t been with us long, but you don’t have to spend much time with him to see he’s incredibly mature and focused—especially for only being 16,” Wilbur said. “You see his work ethic in practice and what it all translates into is a very mature and economical game.”

But while both Redmond and Lee’s efforts in net last week were worthy of praise, the art of goaltending has evolved significantly in recent years. Wilbur said that means players have to themselves be more creative with their shot selection and be prepared to go to the net for second and third chances.

“It’s a pretty safe bet that if a goalie can see a shot straight on they are going to stop it,” Wilbur said. “We talk a lot (as a team) about how we want to be able to create offence come the playoffs, when it’s even tougher to score so we want to develop those habits early on, especially on the powerplay.”

Coming off a 7-4 victory the previous night in Aldergrove, another free-wheeling game in which the teams combined for 95 shots on goal, the Sockeyes’ offence is at least somewhat unexpected. But the biggest surprise from the coach’s perspective is who is leading the scoring parade.

While captain Sam Chichak’s five goals and three assists and Dean Allison’s three goals and four assists isn’t unexpected, the fact their linemate Daniel Tait also has seven points (a goal and six assists) is.

“He didn’t get a lot of opportunities (to play in an offensive role) last year, but he’s certainly taking advantage of this one. I’m really excited about his contribution,” said Wilbur of Tait, who had nine points all of last season.

The 17-year-old from Richmond, who led all players with six goals at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in Guatemala in May, netted the only goal of the match in the 51st minute to lift Canada to a 1-0 victory over Colombia at the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup. Using her exceptional speed to get in front of the Columbia defence, Clarke converted a centring pass from Nichelle Prince, after fullback Lindsay Agnew had a played the ball down the right line.

Clarke, who thought she may have earned a

goal in the 31st minute only to have it called offside, is now Canada’s all-time scoring leader in U17 competitive matches with seven goals.

Canadian assistant coach Linda Hathorn was proud of her team’s performance.

“We need to manage the end of the match a bit better, but really it was a good match. The girls were fully prepared for this match,” she said.

At the half, with the score still 0-0, Hathorn said the coaches told the girls to come out with the same energy.

“There were not too many changes that could be made to be better at what we were doing. The girls simply stuck to the game plan,” she said.

The Bill also proposes that the Province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Van Ostrand powers Canada to World Baseball Classic Richmond talent caps qualifier with four home runs

by Don Fennell Sports Editor Richmond’s Jimmy Van Ostrand has again led Canada to the World Baseball Classic.

Van Ostrand, 28, who plays for the Washington Nationals’ AA affiliate Harrisburg Senators, had an RBI double and later scored on a two-run shot to left field off the bat of Adam Loewen in the second inning,

and then put the Canadians up by eight with his fourth home run of the tournament in the third inning to help power Canada to an 11-1 win over host Germany Monday in the final of a qualifying tournament in Regensburg. The win assured Canada of entry in the 2013 World Baseball Classic to be held next March in the U.S. “We came here knowing that we had to win three games

and we accomplished our goal,” said Canadian manager Ernie Whitt.

“I can’t say enough about this team—they’re gamers, they’re guys that play hard with pride and passion. It makes my job easy as a manager and we’re just happy that we’re moving on.”

Van Ostrand played for Canada at the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

Jimmy Van Ostrand scored once, had an RBI double and homered in Canada’s 11-1 final-game win over Germany.
