Legion gift will help build fire station Lisa Carleton

lisa@similkameenspotlight.com

A $5000 donation from the Royal Canadian Legion Foundation BC/Yukon Command brings the Erris Volunteer Fire Association (EVFA) another step closer to breaking ground for the fire hall to be located at 2254 Princeton - Summerland Road. Approximately four years ago, residents realizing the need for coverage for their area formed an association and began their quest for equipment and a home for a fire hall. It has been a long process but the association now has some equipment and land on which to develop a fire station and thanks to the Anarchist Mountain Fire Department out of Osoyoos, they have a fire truck as well. On Saturday, Sept. 22 Mr. Glen Hill, area rep for North Okanagan travelled to the site to present the donation on behalf of BC/Yukon Command. He was joined by Princeton Legion Branch #56 president Wayne Terepocki, vice president Jim Turner, and executive members, Bob Paterson and Cliff Glover. Sandi Lawlor, president of the Erris Volunteer Fire Association made application to the foundation asking for assistance. “We get applications from all over the province” said Mr. Hill, “we are pleased to be able to help with such a well deserving mission.” Lawlor extended utmost appreciation and thanks on behalf of EVFA and then invited everyone to enjoy the afternoon. A lunch of barbecued burgers and hotdogs was available by donation to those in attendance and the Allenby Road Band provided musical entertainment for the event The land for the hall is marked and the building permit is in place. “Dependant upon funding, by this time next year we are hoping to have a functional building to put our truck into,” said Fire Chief Ron Smith.

Peach City Radio presents first Okanagan Vinyl Fest

On Sunday, September 30, the Peach City Community Radio Society is teaming up with the Shatford Centre to host Penticton’s First Annual Okanagan Vinyl Fest. Ian Mackinder, co-chair of the first annual event, states “the Okanagan Vinyl Fest is an event where the public can interact directly with vendors of new and vintage vinyl”. Local vendors, in addition to vendors from all over the Okanagan and beyond will be there offering their LP records, CD’s and audio equipment for sale to the public. “This event will provide the perfect opportunity to find that rare gem that you have been looking for to round out your vinyl collection, or, for the novice collector, a chance to get your collection started at a very reasonable price” adds Mackinder. Maintaining its committment to the promotion of local artists and talent, Peach City Radio will host live bands to entertain the vinyl enthusiasts as they peruse the various genres of music for sale. “We’re excited to welcome Michael Musclow, Oceans & Lights, and Playing for Tips to the stage during the day long event and Peach City Radio would like to thank these local artists for supporting this event, and our society” notes Dave Del Rizzo, current President of the PCCRS. Live entertainment for the event will begin at 10:30 a.m. Okanagan Vinyl Fest will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Shatford Auditorium, 760 Main Street, Penticton. Entry is via the rear of the building near Penticton Secondary School. Regular admission is $2 per person. Between 9 and10 a.m., keen collectors will have the opportunity to peruse the selection of items for sale during the ‘Early Bird Hour’ for a special admission rate of $5. Admission is free for children 10 and under when accompanied by an adult. In February, Peach City Radio conducted a ‘Vinyl Drive’, where locals donated over 1500 vinyl records to the Society. This vinyl will be sold by Peach City Radio during the event. All proceeds from the Okanagan Vinyl Fest will go towards supporting the Society’s efforts to establish a voice for the community in the form of a full time, community-based, broadcast radio station in Penticton. The Peach City Community Radio Society is a not-for-profit organization, registered in British Columbia, and based in Penticton BC. For more information about the PCCRS, please visit our website at www.peachcityradio.org

UBCM - from page 1 Resolution A5 asks the membership to support decriminalization of marijuana. This is the first time the UBCM membership has considered a resolution representing the decriminalization of marijuana. Municipal officials will also look at local government finance – “Matching Revenues and Responsibilities” in a session which will delve into the most pressing challenges facing local government by examining local government services and financing tools in various jurisdictions, both nationally and internationally. Delegates will deal with questions including: How can local governments meet service demands in an era of taxpayer fatigue? Have revenue tools kept pace with changes in local

government servicing responsibilities? Are there realistic and viable alternatives to property taxes for local government? Where do grant funds fit into the equation? The Union of B.C. Municipalities was formed in 1905 to provide a common voice for local government. The UBCM continues to follow that mandate today. Through its resolution sessions, the annual convention provides a platform for local government leaders to establish policy directions for UBCM’s activities over the coming year. (Full Convention agendas available in UBCM Media Center or at www.ubcm.ca)

Peter Confortin of Roadstar Transport Company Ltd., and Susan Robinson, former president and CEO of Irly Distributors Ltd., are partners who have been doing business in this area for years. As well as a business relationship with the Lawrence’s, they developed a close friendship with them over the years. Robinson and Confortin had been looking to expand their lumber supply business, “so purchasing Irly Bird was not a hard decision, said Robinson. They have nothing but praise for the staff at Irly. “We like the team here at the store and appreciate how they do business. “It’s a great team and we want to keep them intact, said Robinson.

Ron June (RJ) - Yard Controller, Bill Whiting Inside Sales & Service and Purchasing, Christine Simpson - Sales & Merchandising/Paint & Administration, Kevin Cebulski - Store Operations/ Acting Manager, Ron Proulx - Yard Assistant, Dave Groff - Sales & Service & Yard Assistance and Neal Dangerfield - Receiving & Customer Service, are all continuing their employment with the new owners. Robinson and Confortin plan to add a great deal to the store, including the addition of a crane truck. (photo below) They look forward to developing a great relationship with the local contractors and all their customers. “It is our responsibility to have the right products and the right pricing, said Confortin. There is no reason why anyone should have to leave town to get what they need. “If I don’t have it and can’t get it—then you don’t need it, he adds with a chuckle. Selling wood pellets, expanding the paint and decorating and roofing sections are all part of future plans as well as looking at the possibility of expanding/changing their hours of operation. Robinson and Confortin are pleased with the reception they have received from the staff at Irly and from the customers they have met so far. “The people here are very nice, Robinson said. Her experience at Town Hall could not have been any better, she said. The ladies there were excellent with our licensing process even though it was end of day on a Friday. A much different experience than that in the city. “We’ve had nothing but great experiences here, she said.

She said many supporters of the plan were intimidated by the boisterous crowd and chose not to speak up, so they’ve emailed comments to her and Hawkings that are largely in favour of the proposal. “Maybe a little tweaking (is desired), but they all like the design,” Kozakevich said.

SpotlightOPINION Marijuana debate Steve Arstad Keremeos / Okanagan Falls Review

A lawyer, doctor and police officer at the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) debate on marijuana policy September 24 emphatically stated their opposition to marijuana prohibition, and noted its role in fueling gang violence, driving up law enforcement and related costs for municipalities, and harming community safety. The comments, made during the UBCM’s Marijuana Decriminalization Debate at the Victoria Convention Centre, preceded a UBCM resolution vote to decriminalize cannabis and research the taxation and regulation of the drug. “From a scientific and public health perspective we know that making marijuana illegal has not achieved its stated objectives of limiting marijuana supply or rates of use,” said Dr. Evan Wood, codirector of the Urban Health Research Initiative at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and founder of Stop the Violence BC. “With the war on drugs fuelling ongoing gang warfare over massive profits from the illegal cannabis trade, elected officials must look toward alternatives such as the strict regulation and taxation of marijuana to decrease gang violence and protect the health and safety of British Columbians.” Stop the Violence BC (STVBC) was formed in the wake of high-profile gang violence related to the illegal marijuana industry in the province. STVBC is a coalition of academic, legal, law enforcement and health experts campaigning to reform cannabis laws to reduce the harms associated with the illegal cannabis trade, including gang violence. Since launching less than a year ago, the campaign has received several high-profile endorsements, including eight current B.C. mayors, the Health Officers Council of B.C., four former mayors of Vancouver, and four former B.C. attorneys general, among them Geoff Plant. “It’s time for our political leaders to accept and act on the overwhelming evidence linking marijuana prohibition to organized crime and gang violence,” said Mr. Plant, who served as attorney general from 2001 to 2005, during the debate. “Taxation and regulation under a public health framework is the best way forward.” British Columbians agree. Polling conducted by STVBC and Angus Reid last fall found strong support for policy change, with only 12 per cent of British Columbians in favour of keeping existing marijuana laws unchanged. In addition, the polling showed that over 60 per cent of British Columbians said that there is a strong link between gang violence and organized crime’s control of the marijuana trade. “Marijuana prohibition may be well-intentioned, but I personally believe it has failed in B.C. and around the world,” said David Bratzer, a police officer who resides in Victoria, B.C. “As a police officer, I’ve seen the results of the gang violence that has been fuelled by marijuana prohibition. A strictly regulated, legal market for adult marijuana consumption is clearly the best approach to fighting crime and protecting our communities.” Last week’s mystery person was Sue Turner. Heroes risk own lives to save Chevy Dear Editor I would like to tell you about mine and my dog (Chevys’) local heroes. On Sept. 7, my dog went missing when I was down by the Similkameen Falls. After calling and looking for him I’d almost given up when I went for a walk early Friday morning by the cliffs (the gorge) of the falls. I heard a howl and realized that my dog was somewhere below. I couldn’t see him, so I had no idea if he was hurt, stuck or just hanging on. The cliffs in this area are very high and straight down and the rocks are very loose. I had no idea how to get to him. I called my son Rob McNaughton from Agassiz, but he would be at least an hour and a half away. So, I went back into EastGate to see if I could find some help. Taking a chance I went to the new log home construction at EastGate . There were 2 men (Joe Tosczak- of J.Tosczak Construction in Princeton & Lars Alex’us who works with him from Sweden) I had never met them before, but after I told them my problem, without hesitation they both jumped in my vehicle to see if they could help. Getting back to the falls I called my dog and didn’t get a response. Lars went up the cliffs and Joe went down by the river. The next thing I knew, Joe was crossing the river and checking the cliffs on the other side. Lars called down and pointed to the bottom and gave a thumbs up—he had spotted Chevy.

I pointed him out to Joe and Joe also gave a thumbs up and then disappeared around the cliff on the other side. Lars then came back saying that they could try going down the cliffs with ropes and try to bring Chevy up. But, Joe was still on the other side and we didn’t know what he was doing. Then we saw Joe—he had made it down to the water. He couldn’t hear what Lars wanted to do—he went into the water using the rocks to hold on to and made his way to Chevy. Lars went back up, lowered ropes and they tried to bring Chevy up. But the cliffs kept giving away and this wouldn’t work so they put him back down . They decided crossing the river again, with a new plan: to hold onto Chevy and bring him down the river and grab a rope just before the next (more dangerous) falls and get pulled out. So Lars and Joe went back across the river. My son arrived then and added to the plan. An inner tube with a bottom to put Chevy in and extra help to pull them out. Joe did manage to get back to Chevy and get him into the inner tube, then he and Chevy went down the river and Joe managed to catch the rope. These men saved my dog. They risked their own lives doing it, they are true heroes! Thank you Kristina Davis EastGate Manning Park

Don’t send your dentist on vacation - go yourself Dear Editor, Recently there have been warnings from the dental association cautioning those who might go south to save money on dental work. I believe there are good and not so good dentists everywhere. I have heard of good reports from people who have gone to Mexico and also those who had a bad experience. Anyone looking for out of country dental work should do some research before decisions are made. Last winter my wife and I went to a recommended dentist in Costa Rica. Dr. Enrique Parra, in Liberia. We were extremely happy with his work. We both had a considerable amount of work done including, bridges, root

canals, and crowns. Before leaving we got estimates here in Canada and we estimate that we saved approximately $28,000. Since returning to Canada my wife had to have another root canal and the local dentist told her that the crowns etc. were excellent and all the work was very good. We spent six weeks in Costa Rica and saved mega bucks. So why send your dentist on holidays when you can go yourself unless you have your own dental coverage? Sincerely, George Donovan Princeton

Princeton Emergency Crew Saved Local Senior’s Life

Saturday afternoon while enjoying a lovely summer day on our lawn, my 93-year old mother experienced an unfortunate choking accident. Princeton Ambulance responded quickly, provided oxygen, rushed Mom to Emergency and followed up. Dr. Van Der Merwe, on call from Merritt, with an excellent team of local nurses, saved Mom’s life in emergency that day. She would not likely have survived the trip by ambulance to Princeton as the oxygen was not reaching her lungs prior to their professional intervention. Thank you Princeton General Hospital nurses for your excellent follow-up care. A recent CBC Daybreak program discussing the shortage of rural BC doctors, mentioned an Alberta program where first and second year medical students, as part of their general training, worked under the supervision of rural doctors so even a small community with a population of 639 would have medical service. Why can’t the thousands of Canadian medical students studying abroad at universities in Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, etc., because they can’t get into Canadian universities, be part of this program in British Columbia? I realize rural BC does not have the voting power of larger centres, but we contribute our mineral and forestry revenues and taxes. Our mayor, Town Council, local industries Copper Mountain Mining, Weyerhaeuser and our citizens have worked hard to attend meetings, sign petitions, write letters, get TV coverage, apply for funding, etc. We have done our job. Premier Christy Clark, Minister of Health Margaret MacDiarmid, Dr. D. M. S. Hammell; President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, MLA Harry Lali, Interior Health Authority, Alex Atamanenko M. P. , we pay your salaries, transportation and expense accounts to attend your meetings. Where is the co-ordination, action and decision making? Where are you? We Need 24/7 Emergency Services! This notice is published pursuant to section 4 of the Recall and Initiative Act. Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The petition will be issued to proponent Dana Larsen on Monday, November 19, 2012 and signature sheets must be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, February 18, 2013. The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act. Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the Province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Initiative Advertising: Individuals or organizations who sponsor initiative advertising, other than the proponent and registered opponents, must register with the Chief Electoral Officer before they conduct or publish initiative advertising. Registration applications are available from Elections BC. Who May Sign the Petition: Registered voters as of Monday, November 19, 2012 may sign the initiative petition. Students support Terry Fox run Wendy Bentley Similkameen Spotlight

The Terry Fox Run is an annual event held in numerous places around the globe to help raise funds for cancer research. On Friday Sept. 21, the students of John Allison Elementary, joined with Vermilion Forks Elementary students to participate in the annual event. The afternoon started out with the singing of Oh Canada, led by Ms. Campana. Student speakers then gave a history of how Terry lost his fight to cancer, as well as how the Marathon of Hope was started. After the speakers were done, Mr. Low showed a video of last years runners, which some of the younger students (and some of the older ones) got quite a laugh from. The grade seven Leadership class led the students in a warm-up exercise and then the run began. The run started with grade fives and went on from there, with the kindergarten kids running in the middle. Along the way students were given water, at stations set up along the course. Upon returning to Vermilion Forks the students were given an apple for snack and kudos for a run well done.
